Subject: [KHABOR]

[ALOCHONA] Covert external interventions in Bangladesh polity

Covert external interventions in Bangladesh polity

Sadeq Khan

The political scenario of Bangladesh is in deep turmoil. More than the
principal actors at home, Bangladesh watchers from abroad are being
profusely quoted in the vernacular media of the country about their
detection of a geo-strategic hand of foreign agents entering the game.
The purpose is hinted to be a "destabilisation agenda" being pursued
by the neighbourly regional power, which may be finding the very
existence and development potential of independent Bangladesh a threat
by example, in effect encouraging the separatists in Indian northeast.

A pen-picture of such foreign geo-strategic interests fanning up
troubles in peaceable Bangladesh has been painted (and reproduced in
Bangla papers) on diverse grounds by various international reporters.
The Sydney Morning Herald of Australia, for instance, saw in the
border management policy of India with regard to its boundaries with
innocuous Bangladesh inexplicably "aggressive".

Its correspondent Ben Doherty reported on April 21 (abridged):

"The Border Security Force soldiers are unfailingly polite and
hospitable, but conspicuously armed and resolute. We go no further.
'Why do you need to go to the border? There is nothing there,' we are
told over endless cups of chai (tea) with progressively more senior
officers, all of whom refuse us permission to travel beyond their
cantonment, or photograph 'the fence' a few hundred metres away.

'Berlin wall of Asia'
The border these men patrol is not India's antagonistic front with
Pakistan, nor its contested line with China. This is India's quiet
boundary with Bangladesh, a frontier that doesn't attract the
attention of its querulous colleagues, but one that, in recent times,
is proving equally fractious. The fence they are so reticent to reveal
is a rampart known in these parts as the 'Berlin Wall of Asia'.

Over 25 years, India has been building, and reinforcing, a massive
fence along its 4053-kilometre border with Bangladesh, each renovation
pushing the barrier higher, an ever-escalating posture of aggression.
It is due to be finished this year. But more than the simple fact of
building a border fence, at issue has been India's manner of policing
it. 'India and Bangladesh are friendly countries, they are not
enemies,' Kirity Roy, the secretary of the Indian human rights group
Mausam, tells the Herald. 'But the Indian government's paramilitary
organisation, the Border Security Force, they are … trigger happy,
they are killing Indians and Bangladeshis without discrimination. And
they are killing with impunity because they are never charged or given
any punishment.'

A Human Rights Watch investigation found killings on both sides of the
fence, as well as beatings, torture, kidnappings and rampant
corruption. 'The abusive methods used by the BSF are disproportionate
to the problems that the Indian government faces on its eastern
border. Numerous ordinary Indian and Bangladeshi citizens resident in
the border area end up as victims of abuses, which range from verbal
abuse and intimidation to torture, beatings and killings.'

In January the BSF director, Utthan K. Bansal, said soldiers should
exercise restraint, but warned they would shoot if they felt
threatened. As if to belie the director's emphasis on restraint, just
days later a brutal video was posted on YouTube showing uniformed BSF
soldiers stripping naked a suspected Bangladeshi cattle smuggler,
tying his arms to a pole and beating him with bamboo sticks for more
than 10 minutes as he writhed on the ground and screamed for his
mother.
India sees this imposing barrier as a panacea against the evils it
believes lurk across the border, from the very real problem of people
smuggling, to the less-likely threat of Islamist terrorists. But the
fence's fundamental purpose is far simpler: to keep out Bangladeshis.
The xenophobe card plays strongly in Indian politics, and senior
officials, like the Home Minister, P. Chidambaram, have lost no
support lecturing that Bangladeshis 'have no business to come to
India'.

Yet, for all the cost of building the fence - upwards of a billion
dollars so far - and the violence along it, both sides of the border
know it is no border at all. Dozens of villages act as unofficial,
illegal transit posts. At each, a "lineman", handsomely remunerated,
pays off the guards from both notoriously corrupt countries, and
directs the illegal traffic, which can run into scores of people at a
time, across the border.

In December last year, Suman says, he was walking just after dark near
the Indian side of the border. 'My family has a house there, and I go
there often, it was not unusual. Suddenly, they flashed a torch on me
and then they shot.' Suman survived, dragged to hospital by family who
heard the firing. He has lost all sight in his right eye.

Others do not survive, like 15-year-old Felani Khatun who was trying
to cross into Bangladesh to be married. She was shot when her salwar
kameez became caught in the wire. Her screams alerted the guards, who
shot her as she struggled. Her body was left hanging on the fence for
five hours before it was cut down."

More pungent story
A more pungent story of interventionist operations by the Indian
security establishment in Bangladesh was circulated by Jessica Fox,
presumably from London, on April 22 in the on-line 'Free Press
Release' news service. The press release (abridged) said:

"Strictly scrutinized 100 armed cadres of the ruling Awami League in
Bangladesh, who received 6-month long extensive commando training at
Dehradun in India under the direct supervision of Indian espionage
agency RAW are continuing various types of activities, including
secret killing, abduction etcetera since June of 2010 with the mission
of 'clearing' a large number of politicians, media personnel and
members of the civil society in Bangladesh. The team codenamed
'Crusader-100' went to India during end September 2009 and stayed
there till mid June 2010.

On return, the members of the 'Crusader-100' team from India were
provided a hit list comprising names of opposition politicians,
members of Bangladeshi media and some members of the civil society.
According to information, the list contains names of more than 83
people, who are planned to be 'cleared' by the members of the
'Crusader-100' gang."

A follow-up story was contributed by the same reporter in Sri Lanka
Guardian, April 23 issue, as reproduced hereunder (abridged):

"Enforced disappearance in Bangladesh went on for past three and half
years since Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina formed the government. The
issue has now drawn attention of the global community, when recently a
former MP and prominent leader of the opposition Bangladesh
Nationalist Party, M Ilias Ali disappeared along with his chauffer.
The Prime Minister was cool, making jokes about the disappearance.
Sheikh Hasina and her government has somehow become comfortably
confident of being assured by New Delhi on remaining in power at least
up to 2019. It is a substantial period for the ruling party in
establishing much stronger grip over country's civil and military
administration, as well as the judiciary, thus bringing Bangladesh
under one-party rule, which was the brain-child of Hasina's father
Sheikh Mujibur Rehman.

One party rule
Sheikh Mujibur Rehman, who is the founding-father of Bangladesh,
introduced the one-party rule system named BKSAL, which he conceived
from former Soviet Union. The era of Sheikh Mujibur Rehman came to a
tragic end, when he was assassinated along with members of his family
on 15th August 1975 in a military coup.

After 20 years of the tragic assassination of the founding father, the
people of Bangladesh voted Mujib's eldest daughter Sheikh Hasina into
power in 1996, but her government had to finally face a huge defeat
just after five years, because of its massive corruption, nepotism,
state-patronized crime and bad governance. Prior to this election,
Sheikh Hasina sought apology to the people for all wrong-doings of her
father.

In 2008 again, Sheikh Hasina made fresh pledges to the people with
renewed apology for the 'mistakes' during her tenure of 1996-2001, and
promised 'a better Bangladesh' with the implementation of her Vision
2021 and establishment of 'Digital Bangladesh'. It was already known
in the political and media circles in India that, the pre-election
propaganda strategy and the election manifesto of Awami League were
drafted by a team of seasoned politicians and media personnel from
India. Dr. Manmohan Singh and Mr. Pranab Mukherjee contributed in the
election manifesto of Bangladesh Awami League by their inputs.

Awami League got a huge victory in the election and since it formed
government in January-2009, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and her
cabinet are seen totally committed in implementing all of its
commitments and pledges, made to India, without considering their
impacts on Bangladesh or its people. For the people of Bangladesh,
this is possibly one of their worst-ever period of national
catastrophe of letting Awami League still being in power for another
one plus year. No doubt the ruling party and its elites are fully
aware of people's grievance and anger. Sensing this as well as
foreseeing possible revolt of the people either before or during the
election, the ruling party is carrying out its well-planned agenda of
political secret killings as well as forced disappearances, with the
goal of eliminating most of the potential political opponents as well
as leaders of the opposition parties, especially BNP and Jamaat. The
case of forced disappearance became prominent when BNP leader and ex
Member of Parliament (from Sylhet) M Ilias Ali went missing along with
his chauffer few days back.

While Bangladeshi Sylheti community in London are very active and
protesting the forced disappearance of M Ilias Ali, few pro-Awami
League palls such as writer Abdul Gaffar Chowdhury and some of the
business associates of Sheikh Rehana are trying to organize people to
counter the protests of angered Sylhetis in London and the United
Kingdom."

The Guardian, London
The violence on the ground in Bangladesh ahead of the dawn-to-dusk
general strike called by the main opposition in Bangladesh was
portrayed by a despatch in The Guardian of U.K. (abridged as follows):

"Police in Bangladesh used baton charges, live bullets and teargas on
Sunday (22 April) in clashes with demonstrators protesting against the
alleged abduction of a senior politician. The violence was the most
acute for many months in the unstable state.

In Dhaka, the capital, dozens of small devices were reported to have
exploded and 20 arrests were made. In the north-eastern city of
Sylhet, 12 people were reported to have been injured and more than 50
detained in running battles. On Sunday night a tense calm had been
established, although tens of thousands of security personnel remained
deployed across the country in anticipation of further clashes on
Monday.

The crisis was sparked by the disappearance last Tuesday of Ilias Ali,
a key organiser with the Bangladesh Nationalist party (BNP). Ali was
the latest in a series of political activists who have apparently been
abducted, raising fears of a concerted campaign of intimidation aimed
at opposition politicians. At least 22 people have gone missing so far
this year. In 2011, the number was 51. Many local and international
campaigners have blamed security forces, accusing the paramilitary
Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) and local police of eliminating
opposition figures to benefit the administration of Sheikh Hasina, the
prime minister. Spokesmen from the Rab have denied the charge.

In its 2012 annual report Human Rights Watch said ministers have
denied that such incidents occur, even when the government's own
investigations found evidence of wrongdoing."

Wall Street Journal
The finale of this phase of hartals has been described in a report
published by The Wall Street Journal of U.S.A. as follows:
"At least five people have been killed and scores of protesters and
security officials injured in Sylhet and Dhaka, the capital, over the
past week as tens of thousands joined demonstrations. Dhaka ground to
a halt as people stayed in their homes Tuesday. Shops remained closed
and thousands of security personnel fanned out across the city of 12
million.

The clouded economic picture, coupled with the return of violence,
shows that Bangladesh may be slipping back toward
instability.Bangladesh for decades has been unhinged by political
vendettas, largely stemming from deep animosity between the supporters
of Ms. Hasina's Awami League and the Khaleda Zia-led BNP.

On a visit in February, Robert Blake, U.S. assistant secretary of
state for South and Central Asia, raised concerns, though, about media
freedom and a draft law that would impose restrictions on
nongovernmental organizations. More recently, the government has been
hit by a number of corruption scandals. Earlier this month, railways
minister Suranjit Sengupta resigned on allegations he took bribes from
applicants seeking jobs. He denies wrongdoing. Ordinary people remain
hit by high inflation and daily power outages that have dented the
government's popularity since its landslide victory in 2009.

Now, the BNP is threatening to call for strikes until the return of Mr. Ali.
'The government has pushed us to the wall,' said Mirza Fakhrul Islam
Alamgir, a BNP spokesman."

Re: [mukto-mona] Fwd: a video: "HINDU BASHING IN PAKISTANI SCHOOL BOOKS"

I understand the confusion from my recent post. That's why – I gave two examples to show that actual God fearing people are not generally communal; it's the borderline religious people, who do not hesitate to exploit religion to achieve their goals. Following that observation, I have concluded that religion can survive without communalism, but religious-communalism cannot survive without religion. As a result, religion is at the core of religious-communalism. There are other sorts of communalism also, like racial-communalism, tribal-communalism, etc.

Let me give another example of religious-communalism. When Khaleda Zia says – if you vote for Awami League, you will hear "Uludhoni' from the Mosque - that's a communal exploitation of religion. But, we cannot blame religion for her misuse of religion. This is what I meant by religious-communalism.  In previous posting - I also said that if there was no religion, there would have been no religious-communalism. It is like – we have headache, because we have head.

I am confused by quite a few postings recently in Mukto-Mona, especially by Mr. Subimal Chakrabarty and Dr. Jiten Roy. Look at Dr. Roy's comments below.

Here, he wrote, "Religion is not the cause of communality." However, only a few days back (April 21, 2012) in the thread "Religion & Communalism, he wrote, "Therefore, religions are at the very core of communalism."

In the posting below, he thanked Mr. Q. A. Rahman. Is it for Mr. Rahman's regret that the Pakistani politicians were not smart enough to have a bigger Islamic haven in the subcontinent? Just read Mr. Rahman's posting below a little carefully. He did not criticize the Pakistani leaders for any other faults.

Mr. Rahman expressed his opposition to "faith based bashing." Well, looks like the Maharani of Tripura was as stupid as Jogen Mandal for the Namashudras and Tridib Roy for the Jumma people. Aren't she and her people lucky? If her wish of 1947 came true, today some non-Muslims intellectuals of Tripura would be exchanging these academic talks with Muslims like Mr. Rahman, just like what Dr. Roy, Mr. Chakrabarty and I are doing. But the people of Tripura would be as sorry as the Hindus and the Jumma people of Bangladesh/Pakistan due to real "faith based bashing."

I do not think a two-nation theorist can be a real challenger of "faith based bashing."

Thank you. Let me say this. Communalism is a different entity from religion. Religion is not the cause of communality. It's the victim of communality. People exploit religion to foment communality. Those who follow religion correctly are not communal. It's the borderline religious people, many of who has propensity to become communal for their own self-interest.
I my youth, we used to play soccer and volleyball with the Moulavi-teacher of our Primary School; he was our buddy. Also, Moulavi-teacher of our high school was my school-hostel super. He was a very strict religious man, but - used to love me like his sons. He used to guide me like my parents. I have written articles about him in Mukto-mona, and elsewhere before.
I believe - the trouble is with those who are borderline religious. They do not hesitate to use religion to foment hatred to achieve their political or self interest. Truly religious people will not dare to do so.
Mostly, communality has been a tool for political leaders to achieve their goals. In case of Pakistan, it was the military rulers, who found this tool to bring majority population under their control at the expense of religious minority, in this case Hindus. Those military rulers were not religious, but used to act like one in public. There are other batch of people also, who would show their ultra religiosity outside only to exploit religion. These are dangerous people.
This is the truth – religion can exist without communality, but communality cannot exist without religion.

While I agree with most of what you said about "Pakistani politics", I think many Indian politicians are "Play" with religion frequently. Even today Muslim bashing goes on unabated when the time is right. Frequent riots in India says a lot about the problem in "Modern India". The major difference in early India and Pakistan was India was blessed with Gandhi (Nehru, Indira, Rajiv etc) family and Pakistan did not have such seasoned leadership. In reality many Muslims also suffered for lack of good leadership in Pakistan. The "Maharani of Tripura" wanted to join the then East Pakistan and patiently waited almost two years to get some invitations (Around that time India swallowed Hyderabad and Kashmir with VERY different excuses) but our leaders back in Pakistan did not have the skills required to show statesmanship with people of Tripura. Specifically leaders of Bengali origin (Mostly Muslims) were pathetic in negotiations and lost (To newly founded India) more of "Undivided Bengal" and Pakistani Punjab gained more land as a result.  Murshidabad was a Muslim majority state but somehow it stayed with India, defying all logic!! We can certainly criticize and "Bash" criminals but harassing people for their religion is unacceptable. Those of us blessed with some education have to stand united against all faith based bashing. It does not diminish anything from any faiths but exposes ignorants and cowards among us. Shalom!

Let me ask, once again, why some people become successful, while others aren't? The only reason is - some people can envision the real solution/problem directly, while others run around bushes. This is the basic principle that works in every field.

As a result, many people can't envision the real problem Hindu-bashing in Pakistan, which, as a matter of fact, did not start with Ziaul Haque or American policy in the region. Tarek Fatah can conclude whatever he wants, but it really started from the birth of Pakistan. They have been spreading the poison of Hindu-bashing from the onset of Pakistan. This is how they could keep people on both sides separated for that long. Without Hindu-bashing, people would have revolted for reunification by now, like East and West Germany.

India did not need such poisoning, as they were expecting possibility of reunification from the very beginning. Popular belief was - Pakistan would not survive for long. But, it did - through mind-poisoning with Hindu-bashing.

Well, Tarek Fatah's thesis is dead wrong; an over simplification by just blaming one dictator. Without honestly identifying the real problem of anti-Hindu and anti-non-Muslim socio-political culture of Pakistan, no real solution could come; does not matter who Tarek Fatah may be.

I simply made a comment on 2-minute speech by Tarek Fatah. I still believe that Tarek Fatah is generally right. Please listen to the speech and re-read my post. You have gone beyond what Fatah is emphasizing on. I do not think neither Fatah nor I will disagree with you on the communal and anti-Indian politics of the Pakistani rulers. But using text books to antagonize the innocent minds against Hindus started with Ziaul Huque--that is Fatah's thesis. Do not overreact without understanding the point.  Sent from my iPhone

As I wrote before, blaming America is an easy, cheap and irresponsible way of shifting the culpability from where it really belongs; in this case, Pakistan itself. Mr. Subimal Chakrabarty's assessment below is seriously flawed.

In a school textbook in the 1960s, in the then East Pakistan, there was a story where a cow wanted to be sacrificed for Allah in order to go to heaven. In my tender mind, I wondered, how hateful, cow is like a god to the Hindus, yet this is in the textbook that all children have to read! In another history narrative in a textbook, occupation and plundering of the Somnath Temple by Muslim invaders were described as Somnath Bijoy (winning of Somnath). Do these sound like American foreign policy in Afghanistan?

I would like to ask people like Mr. Chakrabarty to search their memory for facts like the following:

1)       The resignation of Jogen Mandal in 1950 from the position of Minister of Law, Justice and Labor in Liaquat Ali Khan's cabinet due to atrocities on Hindus in East Bengal. The government of Pakistan was hostile to religious minorities, not eager to uphold their rights – forcing Mr. Mandal to take a permanent shelter in India.
2)       The colossal scale atrocities on Hindus in Pakistan in 1965, during a war with India.
3)       The regular military of Pakistan killing Hindus, irrespective of political affiliations, in 1971.

Ayub Khan was the dictator of Pakistan from 1958 to 1969. It would be foolish to suggest that he had nothing to do with the 1965 atrocities, or with the mindset of the Pakistani military that methodically killed innocent and non-violent Hindus in 1971. It would be absurd to think that the character of Zia-ul-Haq sprouted out all of a sudden like a weed from a civilized/innocent Pakistan.

FYI: Jogen Mandal's Resignation Letter, if the hyperlink above does not work: http://en.wikisource.org/wiki/Resignation_letter_of_Jogendra_Nath_Mandal

Mr. Chakrabarty really needs to do some reading, recalling his memory, and thinking, before making the kind of comments that he made below. If we can not speak truthfully and honestly, let us keep silent, let us just enjoy our life away from talking in the public forums.

Although only about a 2-mimute-long video, it is pretty informative and enlightening. I was a school student in a Pakistani (eastern wing) school in sixties and so was Tarek Fatah. In the Bengali anthologies that we had to read, there was nothing anti-hindu or anti-Christian. We had great pieces from all great Hindu writers including Bankim. [When the nationalist movement was crystallizing in the eastern wing, Monem Khan became worried and requested Abdul Hye to write Rabindra-sangeet although the selections in the anthologies remain unchanged.] Looks like it was a similar case in West Pakistan also. From the short but incomplete speech, one can find that every thing started with Ziaul Huque and Talibanization of Afghanistan. I will say that this has been one of the evil and harmful spill over effects of the foreign policy of America in Afghanistan. One may argue that cold war is the root cause. Thus communalism was bolstered in Pakistan indirectly because of the American foreign policy.

At this time it may be politically incorrect to say that Ayub Khan and his cabinet members were not fanatic Muslims like Ziaul Huque. As a matter fact in spirits they were pretty modern in their life style. Ayub Khan was found swimming with Christian Killer in a swimming pool! Mowdudi was given death sentence during his tenure for instigating riots against the Ahmediyas. For the first several years after birth, Pakistan was going through chaotic situation. Ayub Khan emerged as the "savior" of the politically unstable Pakistan, and with the dictatorial rule brought stability in the polititical arena of Pakistan for a while. He understood the then global politics in his own way and chose to be blessed by the Washington-Peking axis and as such resorted to anti-India policy to gather strength and thereby consolidate his position both internally and externally (SEATO-CENTO). He was too much a Panjabi and neglected East Pakistan (although it was a great source of the national earnings) and the other regions. He resorted to the policy of family planning and was greatly opposed by Jamaat and some other so called Islam-pasand political parties.

[ALOCHONA] FW: Spreading misogyny: The Obligation of a Woman Obeying her Husband

The Hate Women Brigade of the Islamize-terrorize Bangladesh Army of Jamaat, HuJi, Hijb-ut-Tahrir et al under the leadership of S A Hannan & Dr. Pushpita is spreading this misinformation in the name of religion, or falsifying or inventing social mores in the name of Allah, thereby committing the worst kind of Kufr!  Please, for the sake of mankind's good, STOP the dissemination of this un-Godly stuff!

All the so-called "obligations of women" are quoted from Ahadith that are questionable because none is supported or matched in meaning or sense by a verse from the Qur'an. On the contrary, I can think of Qur'anic verses that explicitly or implicitly ask men to be kind and courteous to their wives. One is 4:34. This may surprise many, but it is a verse that discourages marital rape explicitly and to honor the wishes of women in these conjugal matters.  In other words, the Qur'an gives women the priority in the final decision in matters of marital union.  The message of these Ahadith is therefore AGAINST the spirit of the Holy Qur'an.  We must resist this propagation of misogyny that is ultra vires to Allah's Message:

In the name of Allah, the Most Beneficent, the Most Merciful

Ayahs of the Day:

  Say: 'If Allah wanted otherwise, I would have not recited this (Qur'an) to you, nor would have made you aware of it. Indeed, a whole lifetime I lived among you before its revelation. Why you do not use your common-sense?'  Who can be more unjust than the one who himself forges a lie, then ascribes it to Allah or falsifies His real Revelations? Indeed, such criminals can never prosper." {Al Qur'an: Surah Yunus 10:13-17}

[May I request Mohd. Irtaza to find those verses in the Qur'an that remind menfolks to honor the wishes of their wives and treat them with respect?   --Farida Majid]

The Obligation of a Woman

Obeying her Husband

AUTHOR: Shaikh Saalih bin Fawzaan Al-Fawzaan
SOURCE: His book Tanbeehaat alaa Ahkaam takhtassu bil-Muminaat (pg. 97-99)
PRODUCED BY: Al-Ibaanah (dot) com

It is obligatory on you O Muslim woman to obey your husband in matters of good. Abu Hurairah reported that Allaahs Messenger (sallAllaahu 'alayhi wa sallam) said:If a woman prays her five (daily) prayers and keeps her private parts chaste and obeys her husband, she will enter Paradise from any of the doors of Paradise she wishes.[Reported by Ibn Hibbaan in his Saheeh]

From Abu Hurairah (radyAllaahu anhu), Allaahs Messenger (sallAllaahu 'alayhi wa sallam) said:It is not lawful for a woman to fast while her husband is present unless she has his permission. And she must not allow anyone in his home except with his permission.[Reported by Al-Bukhaaree and Muslim]

Also from Abu Hurairah (radyAllaahu anhu), Allaahs Messenger (sallAllaahu 'alayhi wa sallam) said:When a man calls his wife to bed and she does not come to him, and he spends the night angry with her, the angels curse her until the morning arrives.[Reported by Al-Bukhaaree and Muslim]

And in the report of Al-Bukhaaree and Muslim, the Messenger of Allaah (sallAllaahu 'alayhi wa sallam) said:By the One in whose Hand my soul is, there is no man that calls his wife to bed and she refuses him, except that the One who is above the heavens is displeased with her until he (the husband) becomes content with her.

From the rights the husband possesses over his wife is that she fulfills the duty of tending to his household and not coming out from it except with his permission. The Messenger of Allaah (sallAllaahu 'alayhi wa sallam) said:The woman is the caretaker of her husbands household and she will be questioned as to her responsibility.[Reported by Al-Bukhaaree and Muslim]

Another right he possesses over her is that she fulfills the duties of the household and that she does not make him hire a female servant, which will cause harm and due to which there will be a risk of danger for himself and his children.

Shaikh-ul-Islaam Ibn Taimiyyah (rahimahullaah) said commenting on Allaahs saying:Therefore the righteous women are devoutly obedient and guard in the husbands absence what Allaah orders them to guard (i.e. their chastity).[Surah An-Nisaa: 34]: This mandates the unrestricted obligation of a woman obeying her husband, in all affairs, such as serving him, traveling with him, assisting him and other matters, as is indicated in the Sunnah of Allaahs Messenger. [1]

The great scholar, Ibn Al-Qayyim, said: Those who say that it is obligatory for the woman to serve the husband use (this ayah) as proof in that those who Allaah directed His Speech to (on this occasion) considered this to be fromal-maroof(good). But as for the woman relaxing and having the husband serve her, sweep, grind the flour, knead the bread, wash the clothes, fix the bed, and serve the household, then that is fromal-munkar(evil).

And Allaah says:And they (women) have rights (over their husbands) similar to those (of their husbands) over them.[Surah Al-Baqarah: 228]

And Allaah says:Men are the protectors and maintainers over women.[Surah An-Nisaa: 34]

So if a woman doesnt serve her husband, but instead he acts like a servant to her, then this means that she is the protector and maintainer over him.

He further said: For indeed Allaah obligated him to spend on her, to clothe her and to provide her with a place of dwelling in exchange for his enjoying her and her serving him, as well as what the habits of the spouses call for.

Likewise, the binding marriage agreements require that the spouses live in kindness. And kindness means a womans serving (her husband) and taking care of the inner affairs of the household.

And he said: And there is no difference as to whether the woman is prestigious or lowly, or if she is poor or rich. Just look at this woman who was the most prestigious of women in the world [2]

He is referring to Faatimah (radyAllaahu anhaa) for she would serve her husband and come to the Prophet (sallAllaahu 'alayhi wa sallam) complaining to him, but he would not complain about her.

Is it correct to ask Allaah to hurry when making dua?

Question:
May Allah give you good. The sister says: I supplicate oh Shaykh, I supplicate to Allah saying: Oh Allah verily I ask You to hasten for me marriage. Is asking Allah to hasten your dua from the reasons the dua will not be accepted?

Shaykh Fawzan:Requesting for Allah to hasten the dua is not from the reasons that dua will not be accepted.
When the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah are upon him, supplicated for rain he said:
Oh Allah! Pour down upon us a wholesome rain, now not later.
This is because there is benefit in the supplication being hastened for the person.
As for being hasty in supplication it is for the person to say: I supplicated and supplicated and I was not answered. Thus they give up making dua. This is what is prohibited.

Three Laughs and Three Tears

It is reported from Abu Al-Darda Allah be pleased with him that he said, Three make me laugh, and three make me cry.
Those that make me laugh area person who puts his hopes in this worldly life whiledeathpursues him, a person who is heedless [of his Lord] while [his Lord] is not heedless of him, and a person who always laughs while he does not know whether he has pleased Allah or angered Him.
What makes me cry is being separated from my beloved: Muhammad and his party (the Companions), the horrors of the time of death, and standing in front of Allah azza wa jall on the Day when the secrets will be revealed and I do not know will I then go toParadiseor Hell?
Ibn Al-Mubarak,Al-Zuhd wa Al-Raqa`iqarticle 250.

[mukto-mona] FW: Spreading misogyny: The Obligation of a Woman Obeying her Husband

  Say: 'If Allah wanted otherwise, I would have not recited this (Qur'an) to you, nor would have made you aware of it. Indeed, a whole lifetime I lived among you before its revelation. Why you do not use your common-sense?'  Who can be more unjust than the one who himself forges a lie, then ascribes it to Allah or falsifies His real Revelations? Indeed, such criminals can never prosper." {Al Qur'an: Surah Yunus 10:13-17}
