[mukto-mona] FW: Khaleda Zia's Statement On Party Position :Left of the right, right of the left -Asia Post editorial dated 3.9.09

Khaleda Zia’s Statement On Party Position :Left of the right, right of the left
Begum Khalida Zia has sent to the press a statement on the occasion of the founding day of  BNP( Bangladesh Nationalist party ).Sha said in her Bangla statement  ( translted into English ) that  Ziaue Rahman entered into political arena incidentally. But his arrival was inevitable. His coming was necessitated by the demands of the

Ziaur Rahman entered into the political arena, incidentally. But his arrival was inevitable. His coming was necessitated by the demands of the nation and the time to fill the void in the leadership. His did not come to join politics through any tortuous path by means of conspiracy in the dark, but his ascent in the political arena at an auspicious dawn on November 7, 1975 was anointed by crores crore (equal to ten million ) of people from all walks of life and patriotic soldiers, amid incessant slogans and sprinkling of flowers. The country’s leadership came to him.
When Ziaur Rahman came to power, there was no political party in the country. Banning all other parties, a party called Bakshal was created under the leadership of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman to initiate the rule of a single party in the country. People were stripped of their democratic and fundamental rights. Freedom of newspapers and judiciary was forfeited. After promoting Sheikh Mujibur Rahman from the post of the prime minister to that of the president, he was handed over the power and authority to decide on the fate of the nation. The tenure of the government was increased by three years without holding any election. Although a veteran who had fought for independence and democracy for long, Sheikh Mujibur Rahman appeared as the head of the Bakshali totalitarian regime. But these tyrannical activities ran counter to the spirit of our great war of liberation. These activities had greatly shocked and enraged the people, immediately after the hard-earned independence. It was the rivals of Sheikh Mujib, who chose Khondokar Mushtak Ahmed, a close political associate of Sheikh Mujib, to seize power, resorting to a bloody coup, with the help of a section of army officials loyal to him. After seizing power, Mushtak banned the Bakshal. But Mushtak did not succeed in overcoming the crisis stemming from a tumultuous political unrest. He was also dethroned by another military putsch. Another group seized power and imposed Martial Law all over the country. It was against this backdrop that a revolutionary movement was spearheaded on November 7, with the historic people-military solidarity. This change was for the independence and sovereignty of the state, for the multi-party democracy, for people’s freedom and democratic rights, for liberal politics and for development and growth. This movement epitomised a transition to democracy from Martial Law, which was spearheaded by Ziaur Rahman, the man who declared the war of independence. He brought back politics and democracy and gave opportunities to form political parties in order to make this transition meaningful. He restored people’s fundamental rights and freedom of speech, of newspapers and of the judiciary. To advance this politics of change, he himself floated the Bangladesh Nationalist Party.
   The Muslim League led the
Pakistan movement, but it could not meet the aspirations of the momentous era afterwards. The Awami League was in the forefront of Bangladesh movement, but later it failed miserably as a political party. Against the backdrop of this failure, the BNP came into being with a commitment to do politics commensurate with that of an independent country. This party has given rise to a political system, weathering vicissitudes of fortune, both during peace and struggle, over a period of long 31 years. This party is now a balanced organisation with lots of experiences. Our commitment and dedication have become sanctified with the blood of martyrs. We are moving along against the politics of rivalry, division and confrontation, holding high the national flag – a symbol of unity. We, the people of plain land and hilly region, irrespective of religion, caste, class and profession, have built an integrated nationhood. We shall resist any movement by religious bigots, keeping our social and religious values intact. We shall extend our hand of friendship to all across the globe on the basis of equality, but we shall never accept any camaraderie at the cost of our sovereignty and freedom. We are to remain absolutely uncompromising over our national interest and dignity, and that too at any cost. We are neither leftists nor rightists. Those who are on our right are rightists and those who are on our left are leftists. We are on the left of the rightists and on the right of the leftists. We exist at the centre and we are the centre of the country’s politics. The Bangladesh Nationalist Party is the main stream in this country. It is the BNP, which is the national political institution of Bangladesh.

We would say on balance it is a sober statement and represents the history fairly. We appreciate her balance. However we would add that BNP rule in the 2001-2006 period was marred by corruption and inefficiency. There is need for more democracy in the party. We are pointing out these in her own and BNP’s interest. We hope BNP will improve in future.

[ALOCHONA] Shafiullah, HT Imam in line of fire

SHEIKH MUJIB KILLING

Shafiullah, HT Imam in line of fire

Retired General K M Shafiullah, Bangladesh's first army chief and a great survivor of the sequence of bloody upheavals, is galloping in all directions like the Vicar of the Bray; firing bazookas in self-defence and accusing people left, right and the centre with charges that do not stand up to scrutiny.
And the latest in joining the charade is H T Imam, the man who fled to India when the war of liberation began, became Cabinet Secretary after Bangladesh achieved independence, and was the prime figure to organise the oath-taking of Khandaker Moshtaque Ahmed who took over as president after the assassination of President Sheikh Mujibur Rahman on 15 August 1975.
Interestingly, both are now widely accused of being somewhat privy to the murder of the Sheikh by their passivity and subsequent obedience to the power that was. Had they been courageous and assertive, the killing of the great leader could have perhaps been averted, their adversaries say.
Interestingly again, both are now feigning innocence, with red herrings that their hands were virtually tied, that they were forced for fear of life or at gunpoint to do whatever those who had seized power had commanded them to do. Shafiullah sat pretty in his office and did nothing, and H T Imam, like a compliant public servant, saw that Khandaker Moshtaque becomes the next president.
Interestingly yet again, the fates of these two skirters are dependent entirely on the mercy of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, the supreme leader who is said to be holding more power and authority than did her father. The problem is if she accepts their plea that they acted under duress, then why should the others who had been in the same boat at the time be let off as well? But the governments in Bangladesh have always been strange ones. They do not fit into any book of logic, democracy, ethics and morality. If the two commit the same offence, one goes to jail and the other is honourably freed. Why? Because the umbilical cord factor comes instantly into play.
Shafiullah is clearly in the line of fire as is Imam. But the former army chief would probably need more compassion from Hasina to wriggle out than would H T Imam.
His prime accuser is none other than Sheikh Fazlul Karim Selim, a close cousin of Sheikh Hasina, a Health minister in the previous AL government, a former chief of the AL youth league, and a man who was in the jug for nearly two years during the last military-backed caretaker government on multiple charges of corruption.
He demanded a fresh and deeper investigation of the facts leading to Sheikh Mujib's assassination on 15 August, 1975 to what he called "unearth the truth and to bring to book the real culprits who are still at large."
"Why didn't you come out with your troops to save Bangabandhu," Selim charged Shafiullah, who was seated in the front row of a meeting of the Youth League last week which Sheikh Hassina attended. "They had only 200 odd people with them, but you were in charge of the vast army. What did you do? Were you afraid of your death or you were a mute spectator?"
But Shafiullah's latest stance is that his deputy at the time, former president Ziaur Rahman, had persuaded him not to go.
"I was simply not allowed to move out of my place. I was fearful of my life. Ziaur Rahman didn't let me go," he told in a talk-show of a private channel, unfolding a story that he did not care to divulge during the last 34 years.
Detached political analysts tend to see his revelation as out and out concoction designed to save his own skin against looming accusations by front-ranking Awami League politicians that he deliberately ignored a call to save the Sheikh when the assassins were heading towards his house in Dhanmandi to obliterate him.
They believe that Shafiullah brought in Zia's name knowing well that this fabrication would strike a sentimental and political chord to the AL leadership, to whom the former president, dead for over two decades, continues to be a bete noire.
"Nobody is going to buy his fictional story because it is so childish and 34 years too late," one analyst said. "He would have told it long ago had there been a grain of truth in it," said a retired army officer who was senior to Shafiullah in service.
"It seems Gen Shafiullah has no choice but to open a lie manufacturing factory in his attempt to slip through the dragnet."
"If his allegations are true, then how does he justify taking up a job from president Ziaur Rahman to become Bangladesh's High Commissioner to Malaysia? And what kind of army chief was he if his deputy could prevent him from going somewhere? Does he want to prove himself a spineless, eunuch and coward General unable to act?"
"He should have been wiser to keep lid on his lies. He has risked the whole dossier on him reopened. His chameleonic posture during his days in the Pakistani army, as well as his pussy-footy role in war of liberation and his becoming the army chief in spite of his being junior to Ziauir Rahman, as also his dubious position as a diplomat may now come under the scanner," he said.
"I must say he is a great actor and a survivor. Lot of senior officers had been killed in the coups and counter-coups that followed when he was in command and thereafter, but nothing touched him despite being in such a key position".
Barbs are shot at Shafiullah for his somewhat weird role as the army chief in 1975. And this is being done by the stalwarts of the party to which he still belongs since joining it after hanging up his uniform as a soldier 34 years ago and then serving successfully a number of non-AL governments as a diplomat for 20 more years.
But H T Imam is relatively better off in that no party insider has openly accused him of his dubious role in the aftermath of the assassination of Sheikh Mujib. Privately however they perceive him as a slim customer who has virtually become the most powerful man after Sheikh Hasina in the current government. "It is simply because the prime minister considers him as her brain-trust. He is Awami League's Brajesh Mishra," confided one insider.
"The prime minister is very popular among masses, but she is not so conversant with the high-voltage administrative knitty-gritty. So she needs somebody with good administrative experience that she can rely on. H T Imam is that somebody."
Some others do not agree with this view. They argue H T Imam was never known to be a brilliant officer in the former CSP clan. He got the job not on merit, but on East Pakistan quota. In fact many doubt if Imam would have left the country and fled to India if he were not posted at the time as the Deputy Commissioner of Chittagong Hill Tracts, from where the path was easy to flee. "He is not the sort of character who can stand his ground," one of his critics said. "He is basically timid, ordinary and amenable to pressure," he said. "That sufficiently explains his role as the Cabinet Secretary after President Mujib is gone," he added.
Many kittens may now come crawling out of the bag after Imam's self-defence that he had to do all oath-taking paraphernalia "at the gun point". But it opens the Pandora's Box on the character of the man, his guts and his courage. It also raises doubts about the veracity of his statement. Many people, especially those who feared that they could be targeted, went into hiding soon after 1975 tragedy erupted. Why did he not do that? Is he sure that whatever he is doing now is not doing at "gun point"? Or he will change the story when the next government comes and say, in sackcloth and ashes, that he was just a scapegoat in the present digital government?
It does prove that he was either spontaneously willing to cooperate with new government, or was too coward to take a stand. Now, be that as it may, is it safe to put the whole burden of the state on such a fickle-minded individual's shoulder? Sheikh Hasina has indeed taken a grave risk. Let's hope she may not have to repent.

[mukto-mona] No To The Mullahs!: By Syed Akbar Ali

No To The Mullahs!

By Syed Akbar Ali

[Syed Akbar Ali is a noted Muslim writer and activist from Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. He can be contacted on ali.syedakbar@gmail.com]

In April 2006, I was interviewed by a young woman who was writing a thesis for her degree in Islamic Studies at the University of Malaya.  I was flattered (for a while) to find out that the subject of her thesis was my writing along with that of the other Malaysian writer Farish Noor. Her thesis was titled 'Liberal Islam in Malaysia : Issues raised by Farish Noor and Syed Akbar Ali'.   But my exhuberance was dampened by the fact that I had been labeled a 'liberal' by her teachers.

This type of labeling – especially negative labeling – is a favorite tool of the religious fraternity. Name calling and trying to stigmatise people with whom they may not agree is among their tools of the trade.  And just like their confusion about who really is an ulema  they are also confused by labeling me a 'liberal'. Just for the record I would like to declare that I am a hardcore, fundamentalist Muslim.  And this is what I told the young woman from the University. We have no choice but to return to the hardcore fundamentals of Islam that are carefully preserved in the Quran. The Quran is almost entirely different from what is preached by the religious scholars.

And indeed it is the religious scholars who are the real liberals. Let me explain why.  In this book I have reproduced enough comments and provided enough references  recording the really mindboggling and unbelievable  divergences and differences in the interpretations and implementation of religion that is practiced by the hundreds of shades of religious sects. They all claim to be Islam. I have also recorded in this book the violence, hatred and killing that is still going on in the world between the various sects belonging to the ummah.  They are all at odds with each other and hating each other because each sect has very liberally interpreted its own flavour of religion according to its own whims and fancies.

The word liberal is rooted in the word liberty which means 'exercising freedom'. So the religious scholars are the ones who have liberally exercised the freedom to interpret and prescribe religion as they see fit. Among the Sunnis, the Shiahs, the Wahhabis, the Druzes, the Sufis, the Tablighis and a thousand other sects they all very liberally exercise their own way of  thinking and doing things.  And more often than not, what they say cannot be found in the Quran at all. This is solid incontrovertible proof of their liberty in interpreting things the way  they want.  They are the real liberals.  And as we have seen above, they are definitely not ulema  either.  The Quran does talk about these liberals.

About the people who are very liberal with their interpretations and their different theologies the Quran asks :

'What is wrong with you ? How do you judge ? Do you have another book that you uphold ? One that gives you anything that you desire ? Or do you have certain pledges from Us to be fulfilled on the Day of Resurrection about whatever you decide ?  Ask them who guarantees anything for them.' Surah 68 : 36 – 40.

So  to the people who so liberally interpret and practice their religion in the so many divergent ways and sects, who guarantees anything for them ? Do they have any pledges from God that what they have so liberally decided is indeed correct ? Or do they have another book or other books which justify for them anything that they desire ? Do they uphold other books ? How do they judge ? What is wrong with them ?  Where did they learn to be so liberal with their beliefs and interpretations ?

It is clear that those religious scholars who uphold a thousand different books are the real liberals.  Each one follows his own sect and his own school of thought.  These are the real liberals.  We must all become fundamentalists who uphold the Quran.

It is important to note that before the resurgence of science and the Renaissance in Europe, the Europeans had to get rid of religion.   Today India and also the Islamic countries are trying to duplicate the success of Europe and the West but they have only imported Europe's scienctific method without importing the other vital component – you must get rid of religion just like the Europeans have done. Science is like the pump that pumps out water from the leaking ship and saves humanity  but religion is the leak that must be fixed or it will drown everyone.  If you do not get rid of the leak, then when the pump breaks down or slowsdown the ship will still sink.  Or if the leak becomes bigger, the pump will be overwhelmed and the ship will ultimately  sink.

China is a good example of an Asian country that has successfully imported both components of the European success story ie getting rid of religion and superstition and using science to rebuild their civilization. I recall my Chinese friends from Communist China doing postgraduate study in the United States in the early 1980s. When I wished them Happy New Year or Gong Xi Fi Cai they expressed surprise and said those were old superstitions of the old days and that they did not believe in such superstitions anymore.  They had great faith in science and technology and faith in themselves without the baggage of religion or too much debilitating traditions to hold them back. Communism had purified them of religion. Is it any surprise then that 20 years later, those Chinese friends I met are making China into the greatest nation on the surface of the earth ?

Despite India claiming to be a secular nation, Indian stockbrokers still place  little idols by their computer terminals and Indian engineers invoke the blessing of their idols upon their trains. In the Islamic countries it is even worse. They want to reinvent science in the Islamic mould. Hence we have weird ideas like Islamic science, Islamic medicine and once upon a time even Islamic English.  In his book  'Crisis in the Muslim Mind'  Dr Abu Hamid Abu Sulayman even talks about Islamic economics, Islamic communications, Islamic social sciences, Islamic international relations, Islamic political thought and Islamic political systems' (pg. 150-151).  He did not mention the Islamic wheel!

The purported reinvention of things in the religious mould supposedly involves the spiritual element.  The truth is there is nothing spiritual in Islam. This is just another Biblical term and it cannot be found in the Quran. I really don't know how anyone  is going to spiritually turbocharge anything.

The word 'spirituality' is derived from the word spirit. This word is found in the Bible.  But in reality there are no such things as spirits. Other than Hollywood's 'spirit in a bottle'  no one has ever seen a spirit or communicated with one.  So how can there be spirituality when no one knows what a spirit is ?

God is not a spirit. God is the Creator of the universe. His handiwork is there for all to see.  Our planet earth did not just pop out by itself.  And as the physicist and mathematician Stephen Hawkings said 'there is too much order in the Universe'. We cannot deny the presence of an Intelligent Design.

Some say that the soul is a spirit. Again soul is a Biblical concept.  The Quran talks about 'rooh' but there is no evidence that the rooh of the Quran is the same spirit or soul of the Bible.  And as for the rooh itself the Quran gives clear  direction :

Surah 17:85 "And they ask you about the rooh. Say: The rooh is one of the commands of my Lord, and you are not given any knowledge of it but a little".

So even if anyone asks about the rooh, this is what the Quran commands us to say, basically that we do not know much about the rooh.  End of story.  It also makes the eminent suggestion that high falutin philosophizing about 'spirituality' may have been derived from the 'bottled spirits'.

Islam is a 'deen' or a way  of life. Islam is not compatible with religion especially organized religion. There cannot be a clergy in Islam.  A true Muslim is answerable to God. He does not answer to any clergy. He prays to His God for help, guidance, to give thanks and so on. He does not go through the intermediary of a priest. But unfortunately this simplicity of Islam has changed over the centuries.  In Shiah Iran there is a full blown priesthood. And unfortunately in other Islamic countries the idea of a religious priesthood is catching on fast too. Often the religion based political parties are at the forefront of promoting the leadership of the religious priests.  This is a sure recipe for disaster.

[ALOCHONA] Bangladesh army: cause of trouble!!

Bangladesh army: cause of trouble!!

By Yasmeen Sultana, USA

As per government directives Bangladesh Army is being withdrawn from the Chittatong Hill Tracts! It is viewed as the execution of the so-called 'Peace Agreement' signed between the BD government and the 'renegade' Shantu Larma. The ruling party leaders view this withdrawl as a huge achievement in bringing peace to the troubled region, they are speaking loudly in favor of the ill-thought decision of the current BD government. However, the commanding officer of the BD army stationed in the area said that it was not a withdrwal, but a repositioning of the army units. Like most common citizens of the country I am a bit confused by the comments of the army official. To cap off the controversy the Attorney General, the number one law officer of the country, said that peace and discipline is coming back to the region after the withdrawl of BD army from the region. I was really stunned to read his comments.

How could the Attorney General make such assertions? Does he want to tell the whole world that the BD army is worthless, it is capable of creating troubles only? My question is 'what makes our attorney general' make such statements? Is it a part of the Awami-Indian conspiracy to destroy the army? As everybody knows 'Sheikh Mujib' did not have faith in the army. That's why he created 'Rakhkhi Bahini'. It is widely believed that Sheikh Mujib created the paramilitary force to protect him, his family, and the loyal Awami League leaders. Tofael Ahmed, a loyal disciple of his, was given the supervisory role over Rakhkhi Bahini. Sheikh Jamal, his second son, was being groomed to become the chief of the Rakhkhi Bahini.

But why did Sheikh Mujib dislike the army? Did he not know that many officers and jawans of the BD army deserted the Pakistan army (risking their lives) and joined the war of liberation? One great soldier (at that time a major in the Pakistan army) declared Independence from Pakistan after the Pakistan army crackdown on civilians in the night of 25th March 1971. Other patriotic officers led Gen. MAG Osmani formed the backbone of the liberation army. Is there anybody in the world who can say that Bangladesh would have become liberated if the former bengali officers and soldiers did not take join the war of liberation? The answer is obviously 'NO'.

Many believe that it was the Indian government (advised by RAW) recommended the formation of Rakhkhi Bahini. Their first goal was to make sure that BD army did never become strong. That way India could do whatever they wanted to do with Bangladesh like infiltrating their own troops into the soil of Bangladesh at will. The second goal was to make sure that no opposition party did ever pose any threat to the rule of Sheikh Mujib and his party. However, their dream never came true. On the contrary Sheikh Mujib was killed by a group of patriotic army personnel, thus eliminating the possibilty of making Bangladesh a vassal state (of India).

However, India did not abandon its plans. In fact they channeled more resources and man power to reach its goal after finding out that Bangladesh was slowly marching towards economic reliance, getting International Acclaim for its policies, both in the domestic and international arena. They thought that the only way choice left for them (to stop the forward march of Bangladesh) was to kill Ziaur Rahman. They managed to do that successfully. But they had to wait for another 11 years before they could put Sheikh Hasina to power. They succeeded partially in carrying through their agenda during Sheikh Hasina's tenure (1996 - 2001).

India was totally devastated to find that people had returned Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) to power in 2001. They also discovered that a young leader, Tareque Rahman (son of Ziaur Rahman), played a significant role in bringing BNP back to power. Again India lost the cance to carry out its mission. So, they orchestrated a propaganda campaign against Tareque Rahman, Khaleda Zia, etc. trying to portray them as looters of government money. At their directives chaos was created in the industrial sector of the in order to ruin the economy .

But they found out that without destroying the army they would not be able to fulfill their mission. So, they planted their agents in the BD army. Their agents purchased a section of the top brass including Gen. Moeen in no time. They made Moeen rule the country from behind. Moeen made sure that BNP did not come back to power. At the same time he involved the army in many controversial activities in order to tarnish its image. However, the vast majority of the army personnel carried out their responsibilities as professionals. India was not pleased at all. So, they arranged the brutal killings in the BDR headquarters so that they could weaken both the BDR and the army. But their main objective was to buy a very bad name for the BD army. Unfortunately they could not accomplish much because of the resolve of the army officers to preserve the institution.

The other alternative left for India and its associates is to portray BD army as an inefficient force, capable of no good deeeds, etc. The current Attorney General's comments reflect Indian wishes. May Allah save the nation!
