[mukto-mona] Re: To M. Harun uz Zaman (for Audrey manning)

WRT: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/mukto-mona/message/50520

Dear Dr. Manning,

I understand your feeling regarding the limitation of human brain.

Instead of endless cycle of norm-less talks let me tell you why I
value Dawkins over religionists and lamenters. As long I can marvel
at my own limitation and can try to break free from it, that defines
to me the ultimate human endeavor. In this exercise of freedom, I can
defy any man made godly constraint. Dawkins and others like him helps
me in this endeavor. The religionists are major hindrance.

Just because the understanding of the origin of the universe seems so
hopeless does not mean that we should be lamenting fatalists. In
spite of that grief of not knowing, we can work to improve the living
conditions of our felow human beings, and set up a norm to define
rationality. We should then have the courage to call a mad man MAD.

[mukto-mona] Re: Hello MM, I know you did not like it, but let people know

Mr. Guha: I have the slightest clue about what kinds of news articles
you read. It seems as if you are acting like the proverbial ostrich
who buries head in the sand so that it won't see the real world. If
you are in denial about the possible Obama victory, then I can't help
it. I hope you do not become the butt of the joke from tomorrow when
the real poll results will be out. You surely have ruffled feathers
and have taunted many a forum member.

Tonight at CNN's Anderson Cooper 360 show there were at least 6
analysts and prominent among them were Mr. Ed Rollins who is a diehard
McCain supporter and David Gergen. Each and every analyst present in
the show including Ed Rollins agreed that Obama is going to win the
election tomorrow because the wind is favorable for him and McCain is
up against a strong headwind. These analysts were debating over how
many electoral votes Obama will get. The low value was placed at 270
and the high value was 369. I think the real electoral vote is going
to be somewhere in between the two numbers.

Once the results are known, you can bet your sweet life that you will
receive some interesting reply from M-M members for your naiveté and
obstinacy.

Just now I read the following analysis given by an AFB reporter.
Please read this analysis to learn a thing or two about the dynamics of
this interesting presidential election.

Jaffor Ullah
New Orleans

---------------
Against Obama juggernaut, McCain has slim path to victory
by Stephen Collinson Stephen Collinson – Mon Nov 3, 6:07 pm ET

WASHINGTON (AFP) – For John McCain to confound the pundits and upset
favorite Barack Obama in Tuesday's election, he must navigate a
perilous electoral map on which a single slip could hand his rival the
White House.

McCain is battling to hold onto many of the key states which pushed
Republican President George W. Bush to reelection in 2004 -- and in
some scenarios the loss of just one major battleground could mean a
president Obama.

By contrast, the Democratic nominee clearly has the easier route --
hold onto the states won by his 2004 counterpart John Kerry and add a
big state or several smaller ones to get him to the winning post of the
270 votes needed in the 538 member Electoral College which will
ultimately name the new president.

Facing almost universally bad news in opinion polls, McCain's campaign
hopes for an upset that would rank as one of the most dramatic eleventh-
hour turnarounds in American political history.

Such an outcome would cast deep doubts over the methodology of
pollsters and expose much of the US journalistic establishment to
ridicule.

Obama led the latest NBC/Wall Street Journal survey by eight points,
the Rasmussen daily tracking poll by six points and the final Gallup
daily tracking survey by 11 points.

He led poll averages by independent website RealClearPolitics in all
the battlegrounds save North Carolina, now a tie and held narrow leads
in Indiana and Missouri -- which are normally Republican territory.

Under the US system, the president is chosen on the base of electoral
votes allocated to each state. Large states get the most votes in the
Electoral College -- California for instance has 55 while those with
small populations get as few as a handful.

In most cases, the winner of the popular vote in each state gets all
the electoral votes.

An electoral map put together on the basis of poll averages by
RealClearPolitics on Monday had Obama leading by 278 electoral votes to
132, with 128 still unallocated in toss-up states.

Obama's campaign set out to give their candidate multiple routes to the
White House on the US political map.

"Our number one strategic goal was to have a big playing field," said
Obama campaign manager David Plouffe on Fox News Sunday.

"We did not want to wake up on the morning of November 4th waiting for
one state. We wanted a lot of different ways to win this election."

Obama already leads the polls in Kerry states, so he needs just one big
state, or a combination of smaller states to get him over the top.

Simply winning the Kerry states and Ohio's 20 electoral votes would get
the job done, and give Obama 272 electoral votes.

The Kerry states plus Florida (27 electoral votes) which Democrats
narrowly lost in 2000 and 2004 would also do the trick.

The Democratic nominee could also chose a more westerly strategy,
picking up the Bush state of Iowa (seven electoral votes) where he is
heavily favored and Colorado (nine electoral votes) plus one other of
New Mexico (five electoral votes) and Nevada (five electoral votes).

Obama is also leading the polls in normally Republican Virginia, and is
heavily pressing McCain in North Carolina, Indiana and Missouri, so he
has many possible paths to victory.

McCain however is in a much more difficult position.

Given that it is unlikely the Republican will be able to defend all the
2004 Bush states in a tough Republican year, he needs to flip at least
one big Democratic state -- likely his only realistic option is
Pennsylvania (20 electoral votes).

The Republican nominee however faces a tough fight to hang on to
Virginia, Iowa, Missouri, North Carolina, Florida, Nevada, Colorado and
New Mexico -- all of which went to Bush in 2004.

The loss of one of those big states to Obama -- Florida or Ohio for
instance, could spell doom for McCain.

The loss of Virginia, and one other smaller state from the Bush map,
like Colorado for instance, could also mean an Obama presidency.

McCain hopes Obama's final totals do not reflect his strength in
national and swing state polling, and his campaign argues the race has
trended clearly towards him in battleground states in recent days.

Some analysts also think Obama's race may mean he underpolls opinion
surveys as some people may not want to tell pollsters they are not
willing to vote for an African-American.

Theoretically, Obama could still rack up huge totals in national polls
by maximizing support in Democratic states like California and New
York, and still face a tough fight against McCain for electoral votes
in the battlegrounds.

But it seems statistically highly unlikely he could win the popular
vote by millions but still lose the Electoral College.

[mukto-mona] Re: In which direction political wind is blowing in America?

Dear Dr. Jaforullah,

I have enjoyed your posts on the US election and election campaign
2008. I too have been forming an idea of the elections -- a lot
based on what you wrote and what my american friends have been
saying and the news. Much of which, I think, is probably old.

---
A little rebellion now and then is a good thing. - Thomas Jefferson

I guess the elections provide americans the satisfaction of
that 'little rebellion'. For a long time they used to be satisfied
by their periodic revolutions through polls... overthrowing either
the republican or the democratic govt (most of last century) and
replacing it with the other. However, there seemed to be only slight
differences between the two... and this time the Americans want a
slightly bigger rebellion. They do not want just to turn the coin
around look at the other side... they want real change.

This election is a measure of the degree of change they want... They
are even willing vote for a black man which, even a decade ago, was
unthinkable. They were also considering voting for a female
candidate. Both their options were unprecedented... representing the
desire for unprecedented change. Little rebellion will no longer do.
Apparently they are tired of the little revolutions where they swap
labels only.

Obama's comparative youth represents the they want a change -- a
change that will break from the past. Many do not want an older
president with old ideas, which they have experienced repeatedly.
They do not want to settle for the same old thing.

The deep seeded desire for change has even fear-forced the
republicans to compromise their traditional position... and adopt a
more liberal face. They have also recognised the public demand to
break from the past and have tried (may be, in vain) to create a
progressive image by selecting Pallin as their vice presidential
nominee. Her youth, unfortunately, does not possibly make her a face
of big change to most Americans, as her lifestyle and 'world
knowledge' make her a member of the 'elite America' that thrived in
the 'past'. Her addition might appear as a cosmetic touch on the
party's face.

Since this is an election testing the desire for change -- it will
be pit the american people's desire for qualitative change against
their lingering racial and pseudo-religious feelings. (pseudo
because Obama is not really a Muslim.) Even though the white
supremacists' recent actions may indicate racist inclined voting, I
don't suppose the majority of the americans care anymore. Even a
friend of mine, who does not think much of African Americans, has
decided to vote for Obama. Furthermore, I do not think the pseudo-
religion card trying to label Obama as a Muslim will be a big issue.
It has only probably succeeded in dividing the Bangalees in the
US... sad if it is the case. So I also think Obama will win. His
defeat will only lead to doubts about the fairness of the election.

I hope that the Bangalees will stop playing the British game and
stop being divided on the basis of religion. It is shameful if it is
true that they are divided between Obama and McCain on the basis of
perceived religion issues (arabic name). There are many Bangalees in
the US and they could unitedly become a sizeable vote bank. If Obama
wins, and US foreign policy is changed from its current hawkish
nature... a united Bangalee community could be beneficial for all
Bangalees.

I also hope that Bangalees will force the political parties of
Bangladesh to shift their positions for a qualitative change. AND
form a prosperous country with a system suited for Bangladesh, in
accordance with the culture and history of Bangladesh.

[mukto-mona] Re: To M. Harun uz Zaman

WRT: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/mukto-mona/message/50506

I was also quite surprised to see Audray labeling Dawkins as
fundamentalist. I don't think such label is correctly applied here.

When Audray utters `scientists have no more knowledge of the, origin
of the universe than a person who believes in God' it baffles me,
seriously! All the painstaking efforts of Stephen Hawking, Alan
Guth, Linde or Vilenkin are then useless! Many prominent physicists
and cosmologists have published papers in reputable scientific
journals proposing various scenarios by which the big bang appeared
naturally out of a preexisting universe that itself need not have
had a beginning. We have scenarios like "The Cyclic Universe"
or `inflationary model' already. Some of the models had recently
undergone a number of stringent observational tests and passed these
tests with flying colors. We are gaining knowledge day by day from
those fruitful researches. Indeed, we have some ultimate mysteries,
but it will be the scientists who will eventually solve those
mysteries, not religionists. To claim scientists are no more
knowledgeable in finding origin of universe compared to religionists
are just mere extreme, even though I am not labelling anyone as 'fundamentalist'.

Lastly I don't think the topic (whether Dawkins was a
fundamentalist or not) is being discussed under correct title here.
I have kept it separated in our blog site:

Readers are requested to put their comment too.

There was an organized attempt for plotting a killing of

I actually did not see any of such plot of killing from opposite

Yeah why not! This is probably last piece of straw when republican

[mukto-mona] Cheney's endorsement is like a Kiss of Death to McCain!

Cheney's endorsement is like a 'kiss of death' to McCain!

A.H. Jaffor Ullah

Thus far, the Republican candidate was able to stay far away from Bush-Cheney duo but only two days before the election, Mr. Dick Cheney, the most hated of all politicians in America, flew to his home state, Wyoming, to offer his endorsement to 'McCain-Palin ticket.'

Like all of us, Dick Cheney also reads newspapers and watch TV news networks; therefore, he knows in which direction the political wind is blowing in America.  Cheney knows that McCain is lagging behind in poll.  A conservative estimate is that he is 4-5% behind in nationwide poll.  While as of November 3, 2008 Obama is expected to win over 280 electoral votes (a conservative estimate), the best McCain could garner is somewhere from 180-220 electoral votes.  The final results could even be a tad better for Obama.  A liberal estimate puts 320-380 electoral votes for Obama.  However, I do not think that the results will be a blowout for Obama.

Under this dismal backdrop, Mr. Dick Cheney went to a gathering of more sympathetic crowd in Wyoming where he took to the podium and very warmly offered his kind words of endorsement to 'McCain-Palin ticket.' Mr. McCain pretended like this endorsement was never made - for he knew that this is like having a kiss of death to his campaign.

I read a book 3-4 years ago written by a Washington insider who belongs to the Republican Party.  It was a 'tell all' type of book in which the author mentioned that George W. Bush took a seasoned hand when he picked Dick Cheney but it annoyed his father, George H.W. Bush.  Dick Cheney's political lineage could be traced to Nixon but he was a Jerry Ford operative.  Dick Cheney was an assistant to Donald Rumsfeld in the 1970s.  The Rumsfeld-Cheney duo wanted to return to the White House pronto to work for George H.W. Bush but the senior Bush told his inner circle to keep these fellows far away from him.  Cheney became very active amongst neo-cons.  Thus, when George W. Bush wanted to run for the office, the neo-cons pushed for Cheney to be the veep.

Once Bush was elected, Dick Cheney became a very activist vice-president.  Many Washington insiders think that the Iraq War was the brainchild of Dick Cheney.  Cheney's friend in the energy exploration company that he managed before joining Bush as the VP made billions of dollars since 2003 when American GIs landed in Baghdad.  At his insistence, the Pentagon headed by his mentor, Donald Rumsfeld, gave lucrative contracts to Halliburton; therefore, many chums of the veep made millions from Pentagon dole outs.

In September 2003, barely five months after Iraq invasion, a CBS/AP jointly ran a report in which they quoted Senator Frank Lautenberg (D-N.J.) who read excerpts from the report written by the Congressional Research Service, which found that Vice President Dick Cheney was maintaining ties with the company he once led. After the report was made public, Cheney said on NBC that since becoming vice president, "I've severed all my ties with the company, gotten rid of all my financial interest. I have no financial interest in Halliburton of any kind and haven't had, now, for over three years."

Democrats pointed out that Cheney received deferred compensation from Halliburton under an arrangement he made in 1998, and also retains stock options. He has pledged to give after-tax proceeds of the stock options to charity.

Cheney is very secretive about his dealings with the energy companies as he served this nation as the vice president. It is a small wonder that Senator Joe Biden called Cheney — the most dangerous vice president this nation ever had — in the VP debate held on October 2, 2008 at St. Louis.

During the presidential campaign John McCain stayed far away from Bush-Cheney duo for he knew that many Americans look at them with nothing but contempt.  Privately, many Republican legislators will also harbor a similar view.  Jointly, Mr. Bush and Mr. Cheney had ruined the U.S. economy after inheriting a healthy and robust one.  The budget surplus garnered by the Clinton Administration was replaced with a massive budget deficit and during the last 8 years the national debt had risen to $ 8.3 trillion from $ 5.7 trillion.  The Iraq War is costing about $ 10 billion a month and the easy monetary policy of Bush-Cheney to help build a "Ownership Society" coupled with subprime lending by the big bank have pushed the nation into a financial meltdown the likes of which were never seen before since the 'Great Depression' of late 1920s.

Taken all the above facts together, who would like to have an endorsement from Dick Cheney or George Bush?  The McCain campaign kept the news of Cheney's big endorsement to them.  I never heard either McCain or Palin going out of their way to publicize the endorsement they received from the vice president.  They knew it all along that Cheney's kind words for McCain may read "a kiss of death."

Re: [mukto-mona] Re: To M. Harun uz Zaman (for Audrey manning)

Pagan Gods never needed a proof of their existence.  They existed right before the eyes of their subjects.  The existence of the God-Kings, e.g., the Pharaohs and Alexander the Great, was never questioned.  The Stars and the planets, which were treated as Gods, did not need any proof either.  Even a snake in the rat whole was a live god/devil.  The picture changed when monotheism absorbed the pagan culture with all it's attributes.  God became abstract, and proof sacrosanct.

Dear Dr Audrey Manning,

You are absolutely irrational when you say

"Fundamentalist atheists such as Dawkins, Hitchens and Harris do not
differ much from fundamentalist religionists."

Surely "They all believe they are right and the others are wrong",
but that goes as far as opposing the religionists' claim that their
god exists. If you can prove otherwise, go ahead and do that. But it
is irrational on your part to say that

"There is no proof for the non existence of a God, just as there is
no proof for the existence of a God."

Well, there is no proof of "the non existence" of what is claimed in
a mad man's soliloquy! Do we have to find the proof of a mad man's
claim? Religionists claim of god is as nonsense as that.

Everybody, however, enjoys their "pursit of god/no-god". This freedom
is highly respected in democratic societies.

Very well said, Aparthib. Thank you. It will be futile to sink into the debate about the existence of a God in the traditional sense. But characterization of people as atheist, believers or agnostics does not serve the cause of a rational intellectual search for this question of God's existence. People who firmly believe of an exalted Almighty God we understand their human view points but in the same time people like Dawkins or others are also to be reckoned with for their high calibre intellectual prowess.

Re: [mukto-mona] To M. Harun uz Zaman

WRT: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/mukto-mona/message/50506

Dear Aparthib,

Thank you for your reply!

You seem to be chiding me for holding my opinions. It is as though
you are saying that by virtue of the fact that I am a long time
member of M-M I should follow certain views. Am I reading you correctly?

You will never hear me throwing cold water on science. I come from a
family of scientists. Scientists are not fundamentalist by nature.
They are curious and like to explore and discover. :-)

But (and it is a big but) scientists have no more knowledge of the
origin of the universe than a person who believes in God. All the
talk about reason and proof simply can not enter into a discussion on
God. Evolution is evolution and has no bearing on the existence, or
not, of god. There is no proof one way or the other. As much as I
would like to say God is a fairy tale, it would be egotistical of me
to say so.

You said Cosmologist Barrow ends his book The Origin of the Universe
with the line "We can never know the origin of the universe." Don't
you think that is a defeatist statement and doesn't it fly in the
face of science?

Perhaps we do not understand because we are locked into our own
belief boxes and are unable to see past the end of our nose. Perhaps
when science does figure it all out it may be just too simple for
words. Everything is simple after it is known. But, for now nothing
is known!

Dawkins and others strike me as very dismissive of other's views. We
would do well to remember that no human is God.

Thanks again for your post. Nice to talk to you. I don't get much
time to write.

M-M has been very successful.

Audrey

Re: [mukto-mona] Analytical Ability and Religious Belief

WRT: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/mukto-mona/message/50493

[About your assertion that the core of religion comes from God, did Gabriel
tell you that?"
Yes, he did. He also advised me to continue a civil a dialog with you until
you exceed my "I-can't-continue-this-stupid-argument" threshold.]

That makes you an apostate right away. An essential element of your belief
system is that Muhammad is the last prophet, and nobody after him would
receive message from any angel.

If you can't connect the seven arch angels with the seven planets of the
Ptolemaic system, I am afraid your analytical ability is next to nothing.
You can't find who worships the Sun God. Whose birth date is Dec.25th
anyway? You know what the word "Michael" means. If you don't, open an
encyclopedia, or consult any professor of theology.

If Hammurabi wrote his own code, so did the rest of the prophets and
preachers. Muhammad could not distinguish between Satan and Gabriel by his
own admission, according to Sirat - al - Nabi written by Ibn Ishaque.

Attached is an article written by Dr. Ashim K. Dattaroy. Please read it if
you wish, though a 'functional illiterate' like you wont gain by anymore
reading. This comment was made about you here by someone else, not me,
while posting a reply.

Evolution of Human Religion and the Dopaminergic systems of the Brain
Professor Asim K. Duttaroy
Faculty of Medicine,
University of Oslo, Norway

Tagore and Einstein met several times. Once their discussion turned to the relationship between consciousness and human perception of beauty or truth. When Tagore denied that truth or beauty was independent of the human consciousness, Einstein asked Tagore "If there would be no human beings anymore, the Apollo of Belvedere would no longer be beautiful?" When Tagore replied "No", Einstein answered "I agree with regard to this conception of beauty but not with respect to truth." Einstein's point was that scientific truth must be conceived as a truth independent of reality. When Tagore claimed," if there be some truth which has no sensuous or rational relation to the human mind, it will ever remain as nothing so long as we remain human beings". Einstein replied triumphantly, "then I am more religious than you are." Tagore wrote a poem " Ami" (I) on his views on the relationship between perception of beauty and human consciousness.
""With the colour of my own consciousness
The emerald became green, the ruby became red.
I opened my eyes at the sky,
  And there was light
In the east, in the west.
I looked at the rose and said,`Beautiful!'
  Beautiful it became.
   …………………………….
The philosopher meditates and chants with every breath--
                       `No, no, no!
Not emeralds, not rubies, not light, not roses, not you, not I'.
On the other hand, the Infinite Being Himself has pursued His creation
Within the limits of human mind,
And that is called `I'.   ….."
--(Translation of few parts of Tagore's poem "Ami")

In fact religion is one of five major behavioural phenomena that evolved with modern humans and are found in all human cultures—the others being language, advanced tool-making, music, and art. Emerging data suggesting that religious behaviour has a biological basis. The evolutionary increase in the neurotransmitter dopamine (DA) in human brain is linked to the evolution of religion. The emerging field of cognitive neuroscience now seeks to break new ground in the dialogue between science and religion. However, we need to reconcile different aspects of our brain in our understanding of the world. Are humans genetically hard-wired for critical thinking and religious spirituality, and what are the implications for the compatibility of science and faith in human experience. A recent evolutionary theory proposed that the driving force behind the attainment of the modern human intellect was an expansion of dopaminergic brain systems. The expansion began early in primate evolution and produced a more homogenous distribution of DA throughout the brain, particularly in its upper layers where relatively more intracortical circuitry is housed. The continued expansion of DA systems in humans is the large increase of the DA-rich neostriatum of humans relative to chimpanzees, who spend the majority of their day in peripersonal activities. The brain is malleable, and consequently brain signaling system changes in response to environmental pressures. In an uncertain environment one increases DA activity and responds to the challenging circumstances. This could explain why people under stressful circumstances, such as inmates in prison or concentration camps, for example, or soldiers in the front lines of battle-often turn to religion in a conversion.
A precursor to the final stages of human brain evolution about 100,000 years ago appears to have been an increase in the consumption of shellfish and other marine fauna which are rich in n-3 (omega-3) essential fatty acids and iodine that stimulate DA activity, overall brain development, and human intellectual achievement. In contrast to the DA expansion, other key neurotransmitter systems such as glutamate and acetylcholine have remained the same or even decreased in relative terms during human evolution. The final expansion of DA is suggested to prompt the rise in abstract reasoning, human creativity in the form of art and music, and religious behaviour. The final DA expansion may have also led to the onset of clinical disorders in which DA is overactive, such as schizophrenia.among others, has argued that the same processes that led to schizophrenia must have led to advances in human reasoning and religiosity, because of the higher incidence of creativity and religiosity in first-degree relative of schizophrenics. It might seem strange that "genius and madness" should be so closely linked, especially since the intellectual quotient of schizophrenics is generally below normal. It might also seem strange that two ostensibly antagonistic processes—religious behavior and abstract (scientific) reasoning—may have co-evolved. However, both phenomena are concerned with abstract concepts and comprehensive frameworks with which to comprehend spatio-temporal events in the external environment. A common element in these two mental phenomena is suggested by an experiment involving split-brain patients.
The same dopaminergic mechanisms that stimulate exploratory locomotion and vertical climbing in rodents and oculomotor exploratory behavior in lower primates facilitate the search for abstract patterns and meaning in humans in a space that is internally generated but distally oriented (off-line). The off-line capability of human thought has provided us with enormous powers of abstract reasoning, and creativity, but the failure to anchor these thought processes with feedback from the external world can lead to bizarre consequences. When sensory or motor feedback from the posterior cortex is diminished or eliminated—due to stress (which depletes serotonin and in which DA activity is excessive), drugs, sensory deprivation, or sleep—the activity of medial DA systems is unleashed from its external anchor, which can lead to incorrect attributions of self-initiated or internally generated activity (hallucinations) and /or empirically unsubstantiated associations of external events (superstitions). 70% of schizophrenics claimed to have had a religious experience, with those schizophrenics with additional EEG abnormalities reporting the highest percentage of religious delusions. The greater religiosity–schizotypy link in males as opposed to females could be caused by a greater DA activation in males, given that other disorders associated with DA overactivation show a male predominance. On the other hand, women tend to have more paranormal experiences overall. DA provides an emphasis on the astral and cosmological events and predictions that are associated with religion. But it is involved not just in thinking about these, but in somehow controlling them. By controlling events, we control anxiety, adding that belief in an after-life is one type of dopaminergic tendency, leading to a sense that we can control something even if it's beyond our death. Thus, DA regulates the brain's perception of control along a spectrum ranging from an internal locus that assumes a person can control events to an external locus that assumes a person has no control.
Most researchers have focused on the involvement of DA, acetylicholine, and serotonin (5-HT), as well as glutamate in hallucinations. Drugs that stimulate DA, such as amphetamine and l-DOPA, are hallucinogenic whereas drugs that reduce DA transmission (such as haloperidol) tend to diminish or eliminate hallucinations. Increased DA transmission is a major feature of the brain during hypoxia, and hypoxia at birth is one of several early-developmental risk factors for schizophrenia in which DA levels are elevated. Phencyclidine and ketamine, two drugs that can lead to out-of-body and mystical experiences bind with opioid, glutamatergic, D2 dopaminergic and other receptors with the glutamatergic and other non-DA actions ultimately expressed via DA pathways. Neuropharmacological studies generally point to dopaminergic activation as the leading neurochemical feature associated with religious activity. The ventral dopaminergic pathways involved in religious behavior most closely align with the action-extrapersonal system in the model of 3-D perceptual–motor interactions. Hyper-religiosity is a major feature of mania, obsessive-compulsive disorder, schizophrenia, temporal-lobe epilepsy and related disorders, in which the ventromedial dopaminergic systems are highly activated and exaggerated attentional or goal-directed behavior toward extrapersonal space occurs. Religious behaviour—and especially those experiences that have occurred and continue to occur—are largely a product of the extrapersonal brain systems that predominate in the ventromedial cortex and rely heavily on dopaminergic transmission. By contrast, systems dealing more with body-oriented space in parietal and other dorsal brain areas and predominantly utilizing serotonergic and noradrenergic circuits appear to be less activated during religious behavior. Although the neuropsychology of religion has become a topic of greater interest recently, religion is arguably still under-researched as a brain phenomenon relative to language, visual perception, music, and even mathematics. Nevertheless, religious beliefs, experiences and practices can be readily explored by means of attention and bisection paradigms, probabilistic tasks, trait scales such as religiosity, magical ideation, and schizotypy, animal models (superstitious behaviour), and numerous neuroscientific measurement techniques. I am sure future research will further reveal the religious behaviour in different human populations.
