[mukto-mona] Nano in Gujarat-- ISP Nov 2008 I

Nano in Gujarat- Make Believe Stature of Modi

Ram Puniyani

Shifting of Nano to Gujarat has been projected as a feather in Modi's cap. With this his already rising popular rating due to the projections by a section of media and blind apologists of current pattern of development has got a big boost. Some from the world of business/vested interests have started saying that Modi is the future of India and if there are five more Modi's the country will prosper in the real fast way! The additional point being made is that he has shown the path to deal with 'terror'; he can control this problem in effective way etc.!

The alternative patterns of development, what are the different components of the process apart, lets see his record and the 'achievements' in Gujarat. He is the one who gave the final push to convert Gujarat from being a part of democratic India to 'Hindu Nation in one state'. His projection of Godhra as the preplanned act by Muslim community and unleashing the carnage against this hapless minority has few parallels in the history of India. He presided over a tirade to convert the minorities into second class citizens in his state. Not only did he refuse to let the refugee camps continue, today over five lakh Muslim minority are staying in the proliferating ghettoes of Gujarat, denied the facilities by state and the civic authorities. Most of the indices of Gujarat development relate to increasing affluence of the sections of middle classes while the condition of average and poorer sections are declining badly.

Poverty levels are rising; employment and agriculture are having a bad time. The agricultural production has been declining, e.g. from 65.71 lakh tones in 2003-2004 to 51.53 in 2004-2005. A survey conducted by NSS in 2005 shows that approximately 40% farmers of state said that given the option they would like to shift from away agriculture. Recent studies show that agriculture and labor both have suffered extensively during last one decade. Modi in a reply given in state assembly stated that in one year up to Jan 2007, 148 farmers had committed suicide and the condition is worsening on that score. While on one side the state exports electricity, its villages are having a power deficit. Indian Express 8th April 2007 reported that state is reeling under the shortfall of 900 mega Watt of power, the victims of this are mainly in the villages. One of the indices of poverty, prevalence of anemia is very revealing on this count. The percentage of women
suffering from anemia has risen from 46.3% in 1999 to 55.5% in 2004 (Third round of National Family Health survey report 2006) among women. Amongst children it rose from 74.5% to 80.1%. Some of the reports point out the conditions of dalits and women has deteriorated during last decade. For women one of the indices is the declining sex ratio in Gujarat during last decade. The plight of Adivasis is no better.

Gujarat also witnessed the anti Christian violence during Modi regime and Adivasis have been a totally neglected lot in the state, reeling under the Vanvasi Kalyan Ashrams Gharvapasi (Conversion into Hinduism) campaigns. Minorities have been reduced to scapegoats and the social partitions are becoming rigid by the day. Some development has taken place in the state, but Gujarat was always amongst the more developed states of the country. It is not that things have started from the scratch.

As far as terrorism is concerned, the acts of terror did take place in the form of attack on Akshardham during his regime. After this Akshardham attack he romped home to electoral victory. A bit later with his bloated chest he started claiming that terrorists dare not enter his state, till of course the bomb blasts in Ahmedabad (2008). After this he propagated that he cannot deal with this phenomenon as he does not have effective laws! This deliberate lie is meant to while wash the fact that terrorism has deeper roots, which cannot be uprooted by brave rhetoric's which he is adept to dishing out. He has mastered the art of using the opportunity to project him, well assisted by the section of media.

The pattern of things in Gujarat today is clear, it intimidates and brow beat minorities, take up policies which help the affluent and upper middle class, project this and hide the backyard where the poor and minorities stay. No wonder this is what attracts the ilk of Tata, who are very appreciative of Modi, as the backyard of the state, the violation of democratic norms has no meaning for them, the only thing which matters for them is the proliferating coffers of their companies. The considerations of ethical and holistic development don't matter there. This is no different from the attitude of big industrialists towards Hitler. They backed him to the hilt in his rampage against the democratic norms. It is not for nothing that serious academics like Ashish Nandy describe Modi as the person with classic fascist traits.

The carnage of 2002 and the parallel intimidation of Christian minorities have already paved the way for the religious authoritarianism in the state. Modi is basking in the glory of 'personally efficient and disciplined' person. A person should not be judged by a small part of the policies. What is overlooked in this shortsighted evaluation is that whether the said person is committed to democratic values, values of Indian Constitution or not. While the management Gurus and money bags are comfortable with the likes of Hitler/Modi, for the large sections of deprived population such rules are a nightmare. What more can be said about such a person who comes to power through polarizing the society and then rules in a manner where false claims about amity abound. The aura created around him is a sign of ominous dark times for the nation, the times threatening to engulf the values of our plural culture and values of our freedom movement, which emphasized
on democracy and equal rights for all.

[mukto-mona] Re: Hello MM, I know you did not like it, but let people know

Mr. Guha's phantasmagoric write-up brought laughter in me! With a
lot of hubris he came to this forum pontificating that all the
pollsters are wrong. And now he is fretting because he knows what is
about to happen.

Like Mr. Guha we all read name brand newspaper, watch CBS, ABC, NBC,
CNN news and we form our opinion. It seems as if Mr. Guha has some
problem with Obama being the president. I have endured 8 years of
Reagan, 4 years of George H.W. Bush, and 8 stupid years of George W.
Bush, and yes, I could endure a McCain presidency. It is the voice
of Sarah Palin that gives me an instant headache.

After November 4 when the election results will be known, there will
be some hardball question for Mr. Guha and his acolyte. Wait until
then.

[mukto-mona] Re: How will Jamaat muffle it killing spree in 1971, thereafter and in the future?

WRT: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/mukto-mona/message/50469

Farid Majid asked: Quote [Do we have instances of Indian BJP/Sangh
Parivar engaged in mass killing of Hindus?] End Quote

A certain Nathuram Godse was a member of the Hindu Mahasabha which
later morphed into the BJP and its non political wing, the RSS with
its more militant recent offshoot, the Bajrang Dal. On Jan the 30th
1948, Godse assassinated someone she must have heard of - Mohandas
Karamchand Gandhi, also known as Mahatma Gandhi in India.

As far as Hindu Vs Hindu violence in India is concerned, I have some
video and reading suggestions for her:

There are many more resources if someone takes the time to do a
simple search on Ixquick or Google, several million, in fact. While
this is not to justify violence by Muslims on Muslims or by members
of any other religion on either their co-religionists or on people
who follow other religions anywhere, it is a lie to claim that Hindus
do not kill other Hindus. Farida Majid's post reflects either
ignorance or a motivated interest in running down those whom she does
not agree with, a trait that has shown itself several times on this
forum.

I shall now sit back and wait for her sidekicks to join her in
screaming hell and high murder, with more than a little amusement.

Re: [mukto-mona] Lysenkoism {Bangla}

WRT: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/mukto-mona/message/50466

One of the reasons that led to exit of J B S Haldane from the membership roll of CP of Great Britain was Stalin's patronage to Lysenkoism and Michurin biology- both contemptuously rejected after Stalin.

Anyway, I have profound differences with Dr Abhijit Roy's and Dr Biplab Pal's interpretation of Marx's scientific way of scanning history, economics and society. Neither Marx nor Engels ever claimed that Marxism (Marx was not a Marxist, according to his statement, a stand that confirms his scientific temper) is science.

Revelations from Comintern archives strongly suggest that Stalin was not a Leninist.
If possible, I shall send my points in Bengali when I get time.

However, I am impressed with Roy & Pal's erudition.

[mukto-mona] Re: Lysenkoism {Bangla}

WRT: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/mukto-mona/message/50466

I think we will be wasting our valuable time dissecting T.D.
Lysenko's scientific "achievements." Lysenko did not quite
understand how gene's action could be altered by micro-manipulation
of environment. I am sure by now plant physiologists know which
genes' actions were altered by low temperature treatment
(vernalization).

Mr. Imran Habib Ruman wrote a short article in Bangla trying to
defend the "good" name of Lysenko. Mr. Imran Habib is not an
authority on Darwinism; therefore, whatever he writes on genetics,
evolution, etc., should not be considered authoritative.

I would have ignored his write-up, which is not sound from the
perspective of modern biology. He should read the findings coming
out of functional genomics. A smattering of knowledge in plant
physiology and genetics could lead up to a write-up like his. This
person hardly knows the aftereffect of Lysenkoism in Russia. Mr.
Lysenko single-handedly had killed the growth of biology in former
Soviet Union. Russia has produced outstanding mathematicians,
physicists, and chemists but that cannot be said of biologists. The
entire Eastern Europe is still trying to catch-up in Biology. And
Lysenko is responsible for this mishap.

May I recommend Mr. Imran Habib Ruman not to waste anymore time on
this bogus subject? Scientists are now involved in directed
evolution. In my lab we perform site-directed mutagenesis to change
the structure of a protein to adapt a new environment. Mother Nature
is doing millions of these experiments everyday to make an species
more fit to an environment, which is changing due to anthropogenic
activities.

[ALOCHONA] India's nationhood challenged by multiple identities

India's nationhood challenged by multiple identities

By Vidya Bhushan Rawat

Assam is burning today. Latest reports suggests that over 75 people have been killed and scores of other injured in the 13 bomb blasts that ripped through several districts of the state yesterday ( October 30th, 2008). The intelligence's needle of suspicion is on Huji militants and United Liberation Front of Assam ( ULFA). Just a few weeks back, several villages of Muslims were burnt and it looked that Assam might return to the horror stories of February 18, 1983 when in Nellie alone witnessed the worst ever carnage, brutal killings of about 3300 people in just one day.

Assam has been too sensitive to the issue of immigrants and over the past fifty years a huge chunk of Bangla immigrants have infiltrated in the state creating panic of a demographic change in the state. It is not just the Muslim immigrants which the Hindutva organizations often blame, but also the dominance of Bangla speaking people have become a bone of contention in the north east. Last year, the Hindi speaking people from Bihar were targeted in Guwahati and other parts of Assam.

But Assam is not alone in its antipathy towards the immigrants. Maharastra is in the turmoil and the fire is lit by none other than Raj Thackrey and his private limited company ' Maharastra Nav Nirman Sena' or MNS. This time the target is poor taxi drivers, milk sellers, vegetable vendors from Hindi speaking states particularly Bihar and Uttar-Pradesh. The MNS says that these people have over burdened the city of Mumbai and snatched the jobs from the locals. Unfortunately, Raj and his MNS have no complaint against the industries being run by Sindhis, Marwadis, Sikhs, Parsis and Guaratis. It is also interesting that Bombay was actually never really a showcase of Maharastra, as Pune on one side and Nagpur on the other were the true symbol of Maharastra. Every body knows that Maharastra has a big heritage and a pan Indian identity of both the Dalit-Bahujan legacy as well as Hindutva protagonists. In terms of Hindutva, Nagpur became the headquarter of the Sangh and Tilak, Savarkar became the masters of Hindutva in India. But most astonishing part of the Maharastra legacy is the rise of revolt in the form of Ambedkar, Jyoti Ba Phule and Chhatrapati Shahuji Maharaj. Thanks to rising consciousness among the marginalised these legends are now recognizable faces all over the country.

Language nationalism started from Tamilnadu when Periyar and his self respect volunteers rightfully targeted the imposition of Hindi all over the states where Hindi was just a foreign language. Periyar's fear was that this Hindisation of Tamilnadu will be a death knell for the Dravidian Tamil culture. There might have been other reasons also for the anti Hindi agitation but there were not many immigrants from the Hindi heartland. The real thing was that Madras, the state capital, had a majority of non Tamil people basically Telugu speaking and they had their own grievances against the dominance Tamil identity. The struggle for Telengana was basically assertion of an identity which looked themselves different from Tamil and the result was the formation of an Andhra State for the Telugu speaking people in 1953.

Similarly, Haryana and Himachal Pradesh were carved out of Punjab to protect the 'Hindi' speaking people whose language was not Punjabi. The fact of the matter was that most of them had Punjabi as their mother tongue but they opted for a Hindi state on utterly communal lines. Abohar and Fazilka, the two towns of Haryana became bone of contention in the reorganization of state as Punjab claimed them. Like wise, Kerala became a state for the Malayalam speaking people while Karnataka for Kannada.

Indian people have multiple identities. And the most important one these days were caste identity. A veteran like Editor of Dalit Voice, V.T.Rajshekar says that caste is the most important among these identities as every Indian asserts his/her caste identity more than anything else. Caste surpasses even the religious identities. Interestingly, when the states were reorganized, they thought that the language was unifying force. Definitely not. The interest of the Dalits in Maharastra are very much different than the interest of the upper caste Marathas. In fact, it was the Shiv Sena and its goons that went bloody to oppose the name of Marathwada University in the name of Dr Baba Saheb Bhim Rao Ambedkar University in the mid eighties. Was Baba Saheb not a Maharastrian ? Was he not educated? But then, the Shiv Sena which claims to champion the Marathi Manoos, does not have these identities as main identity. Identity for them is to gain power and serve the interest of their own goons. Otherwise, why has the Hindutva exposed itself at the micro level when it was championing the cause of the 'Hindus' of India? It indicates how the 'nationalism' cracks in India and simply identify with your ethnic identities. It is used in the regional context if the person claiming its legacy has his option limited to state. So for Raj Thackerey and other in his family pan Hindutva identity remains unbeneficial and therefore they have started this Marathi-non-Marathi debates.

The politics of India has changed very much in the past 20 years. Hence the regional identities have been replaced by the caste identities. There was a time when the language was big meeting point but in the post Mandalised India, it is the caste which is becoming more uniting factor and hence the usage of this identity is not just the domain of the Dalits and OBCs alone but also the Brahmins. Hence, if you go to interior of Tamilnadu today, where the most oppressed Paraya or Arundhatiar may not know anything about the culture of the north, but definitely feel proud in owning Mayawati as his hailing from his community. Similarly, Ambedkar, Bhagat Singh, Gandhi and Subhash have crossed all the boundaries of region and languages. They are not confined to one language and are worshipped by their own followers.

But it is also true that language can be a strong cultural identity as happened during the time of creation of Bangladesh. Pakistan came into being in the name of Muslim identity and Urdu became its 'national language' ignoring the vast majority of Bangla speaking people as well as dominating Punjabi Muslims. When Jinnah went to deliver his first lecture as Governor General of Pakistan in the Dhaka University Campus immediately after the creation of Pakistan and declared that 'Urdu shall be the national language of Pakistan', the students pelted stones and threw chappals at him. The issue of Bangla nationalism was so strong that Urdu and Pakistan became its first victims. Unfortunately, it is not just the language identity which made some people superior and other inferior. Reading through the texts of some of Pakistani generals felt that the people of East Bengal were inferior to those of West Pakistan. Clear enough, the caste identities of superior race dominated the consciousness of Pakistan and Urdu a language of the pure remained isolated in the Punjabi dominated Pakistan.

But in the modern politics of identities in India, it is actually either religious or caste identity that is becoming dominating. The Hindi speaking Uttar-Pradesh is being demanded to be partitioned to at least five states of Harit Pradesh, Poorvanchal, Bundelkhand, Avadh and Ruhailkhand. Uttarakhand, Chhatishgarh and Jharkhand were carved out of their mother states because of 'distinct' cultural identity. While Chhatishgarh and Jharkhand had a long history of the Adivasi movement for separate state, Uttarakhand state had anti reservation movement as the focal point of their separation from Uttar-Pradesh which was under the domination of Dalit Bahujan identities. Identities are carefully crafted and hence at the one end when Uttar-Pradesh's political forces combined Dalit-Bahujan to dislodge to the brahmanical hegemony, polity has taken a completely U turn against the same ideological perception and Bahujan has been recreated as Sarvjan. In the Uttarakhand state, issue of plain verses hill became dominant ignoring the basic difference between Kumauon verses Garhwal. In both the assembly elections Uttarakhand's Brahmins carefully drafted these identities to benefit them. Hence when Congress was in power it made N.D.Tiwari, the chief minister of the state just ignoring the claim of Harish Rawat, who was the president of the party and led it to the victory and when the BJP came to the power, it made B.C.Khanduri, another Brahmin, but this time from Garhwal, in the name of Garhwali sentiments, as chief minister again ignoring the claim of the Bhagat Singh Koshiyari, who has the majority support of M.L.As.

The BJP created the three states out of its own compulsions. It knew well that it was difficult for it to regain power either in Bihar and Uttar-Pradesh, as both the states have been the biggest hurdles in Sangh Parivar's agenda for spreading the communal venom. Also, both the states have been successfully able to contain the communal virus because of the massive Dalit Bahujan alliance. Ofcourse, this alliance itself has lot of contradictions which are being used and co-opted by the Sangh Parivar yet both UP and Bihar have shown that caste consciousness in broader sense has been able to contain the hegemony of the brahmanical structure, though the ideology is difficult to get defeated because of the cooption of the political class and our antipathy for the values of human dignity and individual's supremacy. So, in the name of identity, we have seen the rise of the brahmanical forces in these smaller states. All the three newly carved states of Chhatishgarh, Jharkhand and Uttarakhand are new experimenting ground of Hindutva with tribal, Dalits and OBCs trapped in their various contradictions being used by the brahmanical elites.

While language became the main focus of formation of state but as the new forces of interest are coming in, one hegemony is being challenged by the other one and those who do not have the numbers are the most isolated ones. The problem in the Indian subcontinent is our deep disregard for the minority rights. Experience has shown that the politics of identity is often detrimental for the individuals and minorities unless they have the power to challenge. It has often shown contempt for dissent and often poor people become victim of its 'ultra-nationalist' approach. Hence, the slogan of Jai Maharastra is nothing but a signals to those who are not born Marathi that they can not claim the legacy of the state as Marathi nationalism is quintessentially an upper caste Marathi dominance.
At the time when the Dalit-Bahujan consciousness at political level in Maharastra was threatening the status quo, this issue has divided people on language line. Congress used the growing discontents in the state against the MNS for its own purpose and result would be a compulsion for the north Indians to join forces with Congress to 'save' multiculturalism. Already, Muslims are at the receiving end from the Shiv Sena and now this situation has further polarized the society.

Therefore, India needs a state reorganization commission. It need strong secular laws so that narrow chauvinism in the name of identities be dealt with strong hand. Hatred in the name of identity is in fact hidden apartheid where the sole aim of such forces is to maintain the status quo. Demand for separate state like Telengana are quite old but that need to be seen in a different track now. One must not forget that Andhra Pradesh came into being after much struggle in the name of Telugu identity, very similar to Gujarat's separation from Maharastra. The problem in carving out these states was ignoring the claims of the Muslims and Urdu language. Urdu, a language born in India is slowly dying Muslims seems to paying a price for the partition of India even after so many years. Every one except the Muslims demand for separate states since others got a right for their 'legitimate' demands. The political class in India needs serious thinking and secular law must be implemented because for every parochial demand if we start separate state because all of us do not want any dissent and disagreement will lead to further crisis in India. State can not be created to satisfy demands of a few individuals and their caste fellows. Hence, time has come for government to seriously think over the state reorganization commission and seriously ponder over the issues. A secular India can not allow state hood to fulfill Hindutva's hidden agenda of brahmanical dominance which is severely under strain after the assertions of the marginalized communities. Any demand for separate state based on communal hatred need to be out rightly rejected. Statehood need to be developed on the rightful demands of the marginalized communities and not to maintain status quo for a few power Hungary politicians and their families.

[mukto-mona] The prattle in cyber forum over impending Obama loss on Nov. 4

The prattle in cyber forum versus ground reality for an Obama victory

A.H. Jaffor Ullah

As the Election Day nears in America, a few deshi Republicans smattered on about an upset McCain victory in a deshi forum, which I frequent on a daily basis.  I was amused by their forecast that defies all the popular polls.  But that is their prerogatives.

Barely three days are left before millions of Americans would cast their vote to elect not only the president but the entire memberships of the House of Representatives (Congresspersons) and one-third of the senators.  All indications are for the Democratic victory.  Many Americans who are neither Republicans nor Democrats are simply fad up with Bush-Cheney Administration for mismanaging the economy.  Therefore, this group of voters is tilting towards the Democratic Party.  Is it a small wonder that in many states Barack Obama is leading by 10-15%?  In the tossup states the difference is about 4-5% in favor of Obama.  Under this dire backdrop it is pathetic how one deshi from New York City is proclaiming in Mukto-mona forum that McCain will eventually win the election.  The justification for such an exaggerated claim was – a few campaign signs for Obama were seen in upstate New York.  Also, as per the deshi conservative Republican, the Drudge Report also predicted that McCain will come out victorious on the Election Day.

Not that I have too much faith on any particular poll, but the veteran pollster, Gallup Organization gets my nod.  It is one of the oldest polltakers in America.  On November 1, 2008 the Gallup poll reported that Obama's poll rating is 52% as opposed to McCain's 42%.  It will be interesting to see how McCain close this walloping gap in just 3 days.

In today's CNN "View from the Right" (November 1, 2008) 5 conservative commentators headed by David Brody of Christian Broadcasting Network had opined that the Conservatives (Read Republican's base) are in disarray.  These commentators have all but given up hopes for a McCain's victory.  They are amazed how the Obama campaign was able to package their leading candidate as a centrist.

On November 5, 2008 – a day after the election there will be finger pointing in all directions among Republicans for what went so wrong with McCain campaign and why did so many congressional and senatorial candidates lose the election.  And of course 'Bush-Cheney' duo will have to take the maximum blame for the catastrophe.  The blame game will continue for weeks and I am sure the selection of Sarah Palin as the vice president by Senator McCain will also be analyzed by the Republican pundits for umpteenth times as one of the major reason for the defeat.  Ms. Palin had turned off many voters because they felt she was not prepared for the position and her dismal interviews to news network such as ABC and CBS had shed light indicating her insular macro worldview.  In addition, Ms. Palin holds extreme conservative views on many burning issues of the day, which had scared the hell out of many female voters.

By reading their posts in the cyber forum deposited by the deshi Republicans, I gather that Obama is not liked by religious Hindus because he sports an Arabic middle name.  A few months back in the same cyber forum another deshi Republican had mentioned that Obama is a liberal; therefore he should not be trusted.

In 1980, when the ex-governor of California Ronald Reagan was running for the office, he anathematized the Democrats by calling them liberals who only know how to tax and spend.  This mischaracterization of the liberals continued for the last two decades.  The overuse of this definition of liberals is not getting the currency these days.  Sarah Palin and John McCain tried their best to label 'Obama-Biden' ticket as the big spender liberals but the voters are not buying this message.  They saw how a strong economy with budget surplus during Clinton times (1993-2000) was transformed into a weak economy with massive budget deficit.  On top of the shrinking economy, a spate of massive banks failure due to subprime lending and meltdown in the Wall Street has alarmed the voters.  If McCain come out as a sore loser, which is apparent right now, the main reason for his failure to come out victorious in the lection would be solely due to deteriorating economy in the U.S.  More voters hold the view that Obama will be a better steward of the economy than Senator McCain.

The tax policy favored by Obama is gaining confidence among the electorates.  Obama's plan is to tax the rich Americans, who received a favorable treatment from Bush-Cheney Administration, and give a tax break to the middle class.  Both John McCain and Sarah Palin are telling the Americans that Obama will be rise the tax of the middle class to fund his pet project and make the government bigger and wasteful.  However, the electorates are not in a mood to pay attention to the Republican message.

There is another reason why Obama may get more popular votes.  This year, many states are allowing the voters to cast their votes early.  Therefore, many young and minority voters are heading to the polling places allover America.  They are most willing to stand in lines for hours to cast their votes.  The exit polls from these voters are painting a picture that won't be liked by the McCain campaign.  Is it a harbinger for a dismal performance of McCain-Palin ticket to come?

Some analysts think that there could be a big margin in the electoral college vote in favor of Barack Obama.  In the last two presidential elections the margin of victory was less than a percent or so.  But this time around Obama may win by 5-6% difference and the there could be a big blowout in the electoral college votes in which Obama may gain as much as 340-350 electoral votes out of a total 538 votes.

We shall have to wait until the wee hours of November 5 to know the result.  It looks as if though that there may be a sea change in American politics.  The Reagan brand of ultraconservatism is about to exit from American politics to usher in a new era of liberalism, which might dominate the world politics going forward.

[mukto-mona] Pakistan's Daily Times reviews "Chasing a Mirage" :: The illusive Islamic state

Friends,

Babar Ayaz is a prominent figure in the Pakistani Left and is a respected journalist, having written for DAWN, The Daily Times, and  contributed to The Economist Intelligence Unit (Asia) for over 20 years. Currently he heads Mediators, which is the Pakistani affiliate of  the American public relations firm, Burson-Marsteller.

In this review of my book Chasing a Mirage for the Pakistani newspaper The Daily Times, Babar Ayaz has courageously shed light on the central thesis of the book that there never ever was an Islamic State after the death of Prophet Muhammad. Most reviewers have avoided touching this subject, which is a taboo even among the academics, both from the Left as well as the Orientalists.

I am surprised that the Daily Times permitted this discussion in its pages.

The Tragic Illusion of the Islamic State,

KARACHI - Tarek Fatah, a well-known leftist student leader of Karachi in the late 1960s and early 1970s, now lives in Canada and has come up with a well-researched book which demolishes brick by brick the many myths regarding the existence of an Islamic state. Fatah's basic thesis is that there is no concept of an Islamic state in Islam, there is no existing Islamic state in the world, and there never was. While this has drawn considerable interest among intellectual circles, author Fatah has received threats as well.

At the very outset Fatah explains: "In this book I attempt to draw a distinction between Islamists and Muslims. What Islamists seek and what Muslims seek are two separate objectives, sometimes overlapping but clearly distinct. While the former seeks an 'Islamic State', the latter merely desires a 'state of Islam.' One state requires theocracy, the other a state of spirituality."

I have always been of the opinion that the Organisation of Islamic Countries (OIC) should be renamed as the Organisation of Muslim Countries, because they are basically countries with Muslim majorities. Their commonality ends there.

Fatah touches this issue to set the course of research: "Most Muslims too believe that countries with majority Muslim populations are Islamic countries with a distinct character. However, this is not how the Islamists see the world. From the perspective of those who follow the doctrine of Wahhabism or Salafi Islam or even the ruling ayatollahs of Iran, a country can be labelled an Islamic State only if it is governed by the laws of Shariah. Thus neither Turkey nor Indonesia is an Islamic State in the eyes of the Islamists."

Fatah has devoted chapters to Pakistan, Saudi Arabia and Iran, which claim to be Islamic states, and has argued that there was nothing that proves the claim of these countries that they are Islamic states. Maintaining his blunt style, he has broken the myth these states have tried to build around themselves. He maintains that the institutions of Saudi Monarchy supported by Wahhabi clergy and Iranian Velayat-e-faqhi (a religious institution which is supreme and above the elected parliament) have no place in Islam.

He rejects the two-nation theory, considered the basis for the creation of Pakistan. To him: "The biggest losers in this great game of divide and rule were India's Muslim. In the name of Islam, they were divided into three separate parts and cut off from each other."

To support his argument, Fatah has quoted extensively a number of Muslim scholars, who were hounded by the Islamists throughout the Muslim history. He quotes Ali Abdel Al-Razik, an Egyptian scholar of the 1920s, who was harassed by the extremists. Al Razik had concluded in his book Islam and the Fundamentals of Authority that:"(1) Government of political authority, as necessary as it might be seen to realise Islamic ideals and obligations, was not the essence of Islam and had nothing to do with primary principles of the faith; and (2) Islam left Muslims free to choose whatever form of government they felt could solve their day-to-day problems with civil society minus an official state religion being best able to offer such a solution."

The book draws on a number of such scholars including Allama Mohammad Iqbal, who opposed the revival of the Caliphate on the grounds that it was an obstacle to the modernisation of the Muslim world. Quoting from the Holy Quran and Hadith, Fatah has maintained that if God or his Prophet (PBUH) had felt the need to set up an Islamic State, the issue would have been dealt with in the Holy Scriptures.

Al-Razik had quoted the Holy Quran to prove his point: "Whoso obeyeth the Apostle, in doing so hath obeyed God, and who turneth away from thee: We have not sent thee to be their keeper." (Sura al-Nisa, chapter 4, verse 83). This message is repeated in other verses also where it has been said that God had not sent the Prophet (PBUH) as 'custodian' or 'warden' over people.

Drawing extensively from Muslim history, Fatah has trod a bold path by narrating the events that followed the death of the Prophet (PBUH) and the struggle for the Caliphate in the coming years. His view is that an Islamic state model did not exist even after the Prophet's (PBUH) death. The very fact that it was decided to choose the Caliph on tribal basis from among the Quraysh of Mecca was against the teachings of Islam that one should rise above tribalism, and that righteousness should be the criteria.

Fatah's point is that tribalism took over Muslim society soon after the death of the Prophet (PBUH). He has praised some of the actions of the companions of the Prophet (PBUH) and the Muslim intellectuals who followed in history where it was due. But he has not shied from challenging the contradictions and myths that have been promoted by 'some all-is-good scholars'.

Fatah's book establishes that the acceptance of one tribe's superiority over others and their right to the Caliphate is the basis of the Arab's arrogance that is suffered by other Muslims of the world.

The book has challenged the notion of a 'Golden Islamic era' in the last 1400 years, which the Islamists are chasing today. History, even when looked at from the Muslim historians' perspective, Fatah argues, is the history of various dynasties, which were mostly occupied with intrigue and conflict with each other. He has drawn a vivid picture of palace intrigues, ruthlessness and internal fighting among the Muslim rulers. He argues that there was nothing Islamic about these empires, and that these dynasties ruled like any other in the contemporary period. Most rulers had their own sets of clerics, who would find Islamic justification (fatwa) for the convenience of their respective master. Those who did not were either killed or exiled.

Fatah's contention is that the sharia that today's Islamists want to implement is man-made and has evolved, mostly out of Arab customary law. He questions why it has been awarded sacred status and why any objective discussion of it is considered blasphemous by the Islamists.

Tarek Fatah is a Canadian citizen of Pakistani origin and has fair knowledge of the prevailing hypocrisies among the Muslims who have migrated to the West. He is well known in Canada for taking radical stands against the demands of some Islamists, and has exposed them in detail in Chasing the Mirage. He is equally critical of the leftists that have become apologists for the Islamists and consider the latter's cause as anti-imperialist struggle. The book is a must-read for all those Pakistani intellectuals that have helped the state and Islamist groups to spread these myths. *

Re: [mukto-mona] Re: Hello MM, I know you did not like it, but let people know

WRT: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/mukto-mona/message/50455

I live in a world where pseudo-secularists voices are louder. I live in a
world, where Islamists think that they are progressive? I live in a world
where some teachers still think that they the best! They forget that at this
modern age, there are smarter students, than the maniac (Not all teachers. I
have all the respect for teachers) teachers, who drumbeat their stupid
ideology more than the text & reality.

Dear Readers:
Thanks to MM for publishing my opinion. But again with a note? Mr. MM, your arguments are vague! Show me at least one example where you had wrote a similar note, alike my one, under any article on Obama's favor.  If you can't, just keep mum. Oh, we can't question MM posting policy, even we see disparity? Yes Sir, next time we will try to obey you? I have no problem, if some readers were pamphleteering for Obama, but I failed to understand, why MM had problem with my article? Thanks. Have a nice day.

Moderator's Note: Sitangshu Guha came up with a title suggesting that Mukto Mona had an agenda in promoting Obama - the very title is above. It is funny to see his indignation over a response to the very basis he used to send in his first post. As a forum we have members who support both sides in the present elecxtions. Guha started with his claim that "MM . . . you did not like it" (sic). Had his pathetic accusation not been a part of his post, we would not have felt a neccessity to respond woth moderators' notes.
