[mukto-mona] Re: HRW & Huffington Post reports on Bangladesh's violation of human rights (re war crimes trial) and press freedom

Journalist harassment is nothing new in Bangladesh. With the same breath, I can also say that not all Bangladeshi journalists are true journalists as we can see that too many politically inclined people have been adopting the profession as an effective shield to express their political venom against the ruling party. Should Hasina government ignore these journalists and cater whatever they want from her? That kind of mentality and tradition is still far away in Bangladesh, my friend. Just wait until BNP/Jamat gang comes back with their grenade throwing tradition.

Bangladesh: Investigate Alleged Abduction of War Crimes Witness

Judges' Refusal to Order Inquiry Suggests Bias
November 13, 2012

(New York) – The Bangladeshi authorities should urgently investigate the alleged abduction on November 5, 2012, of a witness at the gates of the war crimes court in Dhaka. Shukho Ranjon Bali, originally a prosecution witness, had allegedly agreed to testify for the defense in the case of Delwar Hossain Sayedee at the International Crimes Tribunal (ICT).

An allegation as serious as the abduction of a witness deserves prompt action, and a thorough and impartial investigation. Instead of ordering an independent investigation, the court asked a party in the case to investigate, and then blithely accepted its answer. This is an unacceptable way to respond to an allegation of an abduction. Where is Shukho Ranjon Bali? - Brad Adams, Asia director

Defense lawyers told the tribunal that Bali was forcibly taken away around 10:30 a.m. by plain-clothes officers who identified themselves as members of the police Detective Branch as he entered the court premises with members of the defense team.  Instead of using their powers under Bangladeshi law and the tribunal's rules of procedure to order an impartial investigation, the court asked the prosecution to look into the allegations and later accepted its statement that the entire story was fabricated. On November 11 the attorney general testified before the High Court on a writ of habeas corpus that the abduction claim had been fabricated by the defense to bring the tribunal into disrepute.

"
An allegation as serious as the abduction of a witness deserves prompt action, and a thorough and impartial investigation," said Brad Adams, Asia director at Human Rights Watch. "Instead of ordering an independent investigation, the court asked a party in the case to investigate, and then blithely accepted its answer. This is an unacceptable way to respond to an allegation of an abduction. Where is Shukho Ranjon Bali?"

The case against Sayedee had been officially closed on October 21, when the court refused to allow the defense more time to call witnesses. On October 31, the defense filed a petition to re-open the case to allow evidence from Bali and three other prosecution witnesses to be heard as defense witnesses. Defense applications alleged that some of these witnesses were prepared to testify that they were forced to give false testimony to support the prosecution. The hearing on that petition was scheduled to be heard on November 5.

According to the defense team Bali met the defense team at their offices on the morning of November 5, and they drove together to the court. At the gate, Bali and the lawyers were ordered out of the car and told to identify themselves. When Bali was identified by name by a senior defense counsel, the police detectives insisted that Bali come with them. Bali and the defense counsel both argued that Bali was a witness due to appear before the court later that day.

A white van marked "Police" then drove up from inside the tribunal premises. Several defense lawyers who were there said that 10 to 12 uniformed regular police were at the gates of the tribunal at that time. The defense team alleges that officers slapped Bali several times around the face and head and forced him into the van. The van then drove off. Bali has not been seen or heard from since.

The defense team immediately complained to the tribunal's registrar and then the trial chamber. After hearing the allegation, the presiding judge asked the chief prosecutor and the senior investigative officer for the prosecution to look into the matter. After some time, the prosecution team reported that the abduction never happened and that the defense teams had concocted the story. The trial chamber then moved on to other matters and refused to take further action on the complaint.

The defense team later tried to file a complaint with the relevant police station under the Bangladeshi penal code. The police refused to receive the complaint, stating, contrary to the law, that they needed the permission of the trial chamber to register the case.

"
Finding out what happened in this case is essential to the credibility of the court and the entire war crimes trial process," Adams said. "If the defense was involved in a hoax it should face penalties. If Bali was abducted then his life may be in danger, and the court and government, by failing to investigate, are responsible for his fate."

Bangladesh Journalists Denied Press Freedoms That We Take for Granted

Co-writer and performer of The Revolution Will Be Televised on BBC3.

Not so long ago I found myself on a cold rainy night ringing on the intercom at the 20-foot high security gate at the front of Mi6 in central London, dressed head-to- toe in PVC. My comedy partner in crime, Heydon Prowse, started to climb over the front gates of the building after asking through the intercom if he could perhaps trouble them for a tiny-weenie bit of a waterboarding? "Why just the Muslims," he cried out, "why not me?"

When you are asking police officers whether they are "part of the hired entertainment", and watching a crowd of people dressed as gimps singing "we want torture, let us in," it's easy to forget that just under the comedy of the situation lies a very serious fact. The British intelligence services had been complicit in the practice of extraordinary rendition and we intended to highlight it.

In the first series of our BBC3 show, The Revolution Will Be Televised, we targeted government, the banks and corporations who needed a metaphorical slap in the face. Our attacks, although good-humoured, were designed with the specific intention of highlighting injustice.

During this process I began to realise that I am extremely lucky. A point that may have been missed whilst confronting George Osborne with a GCSE maths textbook, or when placing a 'kick me' sticker on Ed Miliband's back, is that we were, within reason, free to do so. We undertook our satirical tomfoolery knowing that we could walk away with, at worst, no more than a slap on the wrist.

Ongoing events in Russia, where two members of the punk girl band Pussy Riot are still behind bars, are well documented in the UK, but recent events in Bangladesh provide an even starker contrast to our own experience and receive far too little press attention in Britain.

For Bangladeshi journalists, reporting the truth has resulted in arrest, severe beatings and even death. The past year has witnessed a systematic attack on press freedom by the current prime minister, Sheikh Hasina and her Awami League government.

In the past year, there have been over 100 documented attacks on journalists in Bangladesh. In the majority of these cases, it has been a criticism or exposure of the ruling Awami League party that has drawn the fire of the government. In one startling case, Awami League members ordered nineteen journalists to leave the city or they would be 'chopped to pieces and buried.'

Recent cases are too numerous to mention here, but they include a machete attack in a newsroom, the public beating of three photojournalists after covering a student demonstration and the assault of three journalists by police because they had accused inspectors of abusing a 15-year-old girl. Privately owned television stations were even temporarily shut down to prevent them from covering a major rally of the opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP).

The International Federation of Journalists has reported that there is a continuous threat and harassment against the press in Bangladesh. The World Development Indicators between 1992 and 2011 ranked Bangladesh as 11th in the Impunity Index Rating with regard to unsolved murders of journalists. 75% of journalists who have been killed so far in Bangladesh were targeted for reporting corruption, political scandals, and violations of human rights.

All of this is made even more deplorable by the reaction of the British government. Sheikh Hasina was given the red carpet treatment during the London Olympics. The prime minister, foreign secretary and leader of the opposition lined up to greet her with not a murmur of criticism. And while her henchmen did her dirty work back at home, she gave a speech at Number 10. This tacit approval of a regime that is brutalising journalists leaves me utterly repulsed.

As Bangladesh's largest financial backers - Britain contributes £250 million of aid each year - our government must use this leverage to demand a stop to this flagrant repression. Ministers at the Department of International Development and the Foreign Office must publicly challenge Sheikh Hasina to conform to basic standards of press freedom. Closed-door meetings or seeking 'assurances' is not enough when the beatings, disappearances and arrests show no sign of abating.
Where should the UK government start? Perhaps with an insistence that the case of Ilyas Ali is thoroughly investigated. A secretary in the opposition Bangladesh National Party, he disappeared along with his driver. Witnesses stated that the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) a government police force, who Hasina once described herself as a "death squad", took him from his car. Or they can demand the release of Mutafizur Rahman Sumon, who was reportedly beaten after heading a campaign against impunity for attacks on the media. He remains behind bars.

And in perhaps the most high-profile case, they should call for the release of Mir Quasem Ali, the head of the Diganta Media Corporation, which reaches millions of Bangladeshi through its TV and newspaper arms. Ali remains in prison after criticising the government-influenced War Crimes Tribunal. It is hard to believe that there are even some who call for Hasina to be put forward for the Nobel Peace Prize.

With elections next year, Bangladesh is entering an unsettling period in its short history, as it drifts towards becoming a one-party state. If an opposition remains, which I remain hopeful it will, Bangladeshis must be given a fair and balanced view on the political choice that awaits them. While our politicians remain shamefully silent, we must defend those who are brave enough to speak out in Bangladesh. And whilst I go round taking the piss out of the not-so-great and the not-so-good in the coming months, I shall be thinking more than once how lucky I am to be able to do so.

[mukto-mona] Re: US concerned over recent violence ...

Does not USA know why the Jamaati violence is going on? Doesn't it know that the Jamaatis are demanding release of the war criminals of '71? As a champion of democracy and freedom of people USA should unequivocally support the trial of the war criminals. Not only that it should it should proactively help the Bangladesh govt. Unfortunately it is not happening.

<US-Embassy_2012-11-15-13-20-45.jpg>
Dhaka, Nov 15 (bdnews24.com) – The United States on Thursday expressed concern over the recent violence in Bangladesh as Jamaat-e-Islami activists clashed with law enforcers in Dhaka and other cities and it suggested holding 'dialogue to resolve differences'.

In a statement it said, "The United States Embassy is concerned by the recent violence that has taken place in Dhaka and other cities in Bangladesh. Our thoughts go out to those who have been injured or suffered damage to private property as a result of this violence."

"The ability to engage in peaceful protest is a fundamental democratic right; there is no justification for the resort to violence. We believe dialogue is the best means for resolving differences," the US embassy added.

Activists of Jamaat and its student wing Islami Chhatra Shibir have been clashing with police in the capital, Dhaka, and elsewhere in the country since Nov 5 demanding release of the detained top Jamaat leaders facing trial for allegedly committing war crimes during 1971 Bangladesh Liberation War.

Shibir men allegedly set a policeman on fire in outskirts of Joypurhat on Monday. They also pounced on Law Minister's motorcade on Tuesday. The minister narrowly escaped unhurt, but two cars of the convoy were vandalised by the unruly Shibir activists. The attackers also beat up a police sergeant before setting his bike ablaze.

On Wednesday, Home Minister M K Alamgir claimed of having proof that 'other parties' were involved in the rampages throughout the country.

Opposition BNP on Wednesday, protested against the Minister's remarks stating the party was not to be blamed for Jamaat's actions.

The government is saying Jamaat activists have resorted to attacks on police to stop the war crimes trial, while Jamaat alleges the clashes were the results of police's obstruction to their political programmes.

[mukto-mona] Parag kidnapped merely for ‘realising owed money’

Congratulations, RAB! Kidnapping Case is solved!
-SD

Parag kidnapped merely for 'realising owed money'

Rapid Action Battalion produces six alleged abductors of Parag at a press conference at its headquarters in Uttara on Thursday. Photo: Palash Khan
Six arrested suspects confessed to the abduction of six-year-old Parag Mondol saying that they kidnapped the boy only to 'frighten his father for realising the money he owed from one Ameer Ali'.
Ameer Ali is the mastermind of the abduction, the arrestees claimed during a press briefing of Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) at its Uttara Headquarters.
Earlier, Rab arrested the six people for their alleged involvement with the abduction of Parag Mondol from different parts of the capital and its outskirts area in the wee hours of Thursday.
Arrested Ali Rifat, 19, Jahidul Hasan, 18, Kalachand, 35, Rizvi Ahmed Anik, 18, Alfaz, 18, and Abul Bashar, 25, were produced before the media at the Rab headquarters in Uttara where they confessed to their involvement.
Son of businessman Bimol Chandra Mondol of Keraniganj, Parag was abducted by a band of armed criminals on the morning of November 11 while he along with his two sisters and mother was about to get into their car for going to school.
Parag, a KG-I student of Heed International School, was rescued three days' after his abduction from Atibazar in Keraniganj.
According to the arrestees, Ameer Hossain and his accomplice Al Amin, who are still at large, had masterminded the abduction.
The kidnappers used Rifat's and Jahidul's motorcycles for kidnapping the boy, they said.
Jahidul is an HSC student of Dhania College in Jatrabari while Ali Rifat is the student of a marine engineering institute in Dhaka.
All the arrestees claimed that Ameer Hossain beguiled them into participating in the kidnapping by convincing them that they only kept the boy detained merely to realise the money that Parag's father owed from him.
On queries, they claimed that they did not know any thing about ransom money, they only heard about Tk 50 lakh.
Commander M Sohail, director of the legal and media wing of Rab, Lt Col Ziaul Ahsan, director of the Intelligence Wing of Rab, and Lt Col Kamrul Hasan, commanding officer of Rab-10 were present at the press conference.

Re: [mukto-mona] U.S. to overtake Saudi as top oil producer: IEA

Obviously, I do not see certain things the way you perceive them. Green cause is not a lost cause and the proof lies in the pudding. We have gotten far far better fuel efficient cars, houses and buildings due to the green voices. People have become far more conscious about energy waste and pollution. If other countries would like to go for a quick depletion of a finite commodity like oil, more power to them.

Now, whether China would give us a knockout punch in the future, that remains to be seen. As far as I can see, a totalitarian system like China with it's restricted intellectual freedom has limits how far it can go.

We are in a deep hole because that idiot started the Iraq war on false premises! That was the watershed moment for US decline. Getting more oil from the ground would not solve the problem.

"Honestly, I could careless who have been funding the green cause."
Surely! Why would you? The loser, in the green movement, is American only, not Canada, Venezuela, Middle-east, Russia, Iran, Mexico, China, India, etc. Others will keep drilling at full gears; they could care less also.
But, don't you worry; America will save the planet alone, mostly with the borrowed money from China, and China will keep scouting the world, like a hawk, looking for the opportunity to drill.
Thanks to green soldiers, no other country knows it better than America - how to play lose-lose game. The end game of the green movement is to pay more at the pump, even though it's unaffordable for most of them. But, it's all for saving the world, as you know. Keep the pipe-dream alive!

Honestly, I could careless who have been funding the green cause. If these backers are oil rich countries, the end result would still justify the means. Besides, they might be digging their own holes too with out realizing it.

And, the statement is also an insult to many environmentally conscious people, ….
Usually, propaganda campaigns are participated by people who sincerely believe in the cause. I do not doubt their sincerity in the movement. That's not at play here at all. I am talking about the funding for the movement. Those sincere participants could care less where the fund comes from.
It is totally logical that other oil-rich countries will neither like to lose the US-market nor they will like USA to compete with them in their oil-markets around the world. Therefore, I have a logical, but not conspiracy, theory that anti-drilling crusade in the USA will be launched and funded by some other oil-rich countries.

"I strongly believe - green-movement is funded by the middle-eastern sources, and this movement is a decoy movement for the oil-rich countries."

That would be equivalent to believing in conspiracy theories that you have denounced in the past from the liberals and Islamists. And, the statement is also an insult to many environmentally conscious people, who do not consider themselves as pawns of those special interest groups. To me, oil is not the right answer because we will run out of it soon or later with that commodity. Plus, it pollutes the environment.

This project would have been a top priority for a Republican president.  Unfortunately, it is not. Self-sufficiency in energy sources is a part of fighting terrorism for USA.  If USA can stop importing Saudi-oil, there will be fewer funds available for the Islamic fundamentalists also. I see a glimmer of hope at a very far horizon.
The progress towards that goal will be slower during the Obama administration, as he is entrapped in a green-movement ideology.
I strongly believe - green-movement is funded by the middle-eastern sources, and this movement is a decoy movement for the oil-rich countries. The green-movement is here to hamper the growth of oil-production in the USA. Self-sufficiency in oil-production will accelerate in an unprecedented pace when republican assume presidency in the USA. Until them, progress will be at a snail's pace.

U.S. to overtake Saudi as top oil producer: IEA

Associated Press/Charlie Riedel, File - FILE -In this Tuesday, March 6, 2012, file photo taken with a long exposure, a pumping unit sucks oil from the ground near Greensburg, Kan. The United States will become the world's largest oil producer by around 2020, temporarily overtaking Saudi Arabia, as new exploration technologies help find more resources, the International Energy Agency forecast on Monday, Nov. 12, 2012. (AP Photo/Charlie Riedel, File)  less

LONDON (Reuters) - The United States will overtake Saudi Arabia and Russia as the world's top oil producer by 2017, the West's energy agency said on Monday, predicting Washington will come very close to achieving a previously unthinkable energy self-sufficiency.
The forecasts by the International Energy Agency (IEA), which advises large industrialized nations on energy policy, were in sharp contrast to previous IEA reports, which saw Saudi Arabia remaining the top producer until 2035.
"Energy developments in the United States are profound and their effect will be felt well beyond North America - and the energy sector," the IEA said in its annual long-term report, giving one of the most optimistic forecasts for U.S. energy production growth to date.
"The recent rebound in U.S. oil and gas production, driven by upstream technologies that are unlocking light tight oil and shale gas resources, is spurring economic activity - with less expensive gas and electricity prices giving industry a competitive edge," it added.
The IEA said it saw a continued fall in U.S. oil imports with North America becoming a net oil exporter by around 2030 and the United States becoming almost self-sufficient in energy by 2035.
"The United States, which currently imports around 20 percent of its total energy needs, becomes all but self-sufficient in net terms - a dramatic reversal of the trend seen in most other energy importing countries," it said.
IEA Chief Economist Fatih Birol told a news conference in London he believed the United States would overtake Russia as the biggest gas producer by a significant margin by 2015. By 2017, it would become the world's largest oil producer, he said.
The United States will rely more on natural gas than either oil or coal by 2035 as cheap domestic supply boosts demand among industry and power generators, the IEA said.
LIMITED KNOWLEDGE
Birol said he realized how optimistic the IEA forecasts were given that the shale oil boom was a relatively new phenomenon.
"Light, tight oil resources are poorly known ... If no new resources are discovered (after 2020) and plus, if the prices are not as high as today, then we may see Saudi Arabia coming back and being the first producer again," he said.
The IEA said it saw U.S. oil production rising to 10 million barrels per day (bpd) by 2015 and 11.1 million bpd in 2020 before slipping to 9.2 million bpd by 2035.
Saudi Arabian oil output would be 10.9 million bpd by 2015, the IEA said, 10.6 million bpd in 2020 but would rise to 12.3 million bpd by 2035.
That would see the world relying increasingly on OPEC after 2020 as, in addition to increases from Saudi Arabia, Iraq will account for 45 percent of the growth in global oil production to 2035 and become the second-largest exporter, overtaking Russia.
OPEC's share of world oil production will rise to 48 percent from 42 percent now.
Russian oil output, which over the past decade has been steadily above Saudi Arabia, is predicted to stay flat at over 10 million bpd until 2020, when it will start to decline to reach just above 9 million bpd by 2035.
"Russia, which remains the largest individual energy exporter throughout the period, sees its revenues from oil, natural gas and coal exports rise from $380 billion in 2011 to $410 billion in 2035," the IEA said.
The U.S. oil boom would accelerate a switch in the direction of international oil trade, the IEA said, predicting that by 2035 almost 90 percent of oil from the Middle East would be drawn to Asia.
ENERGY DEMAND GROWS BY THIRD
The report assumes a huge expansion in the Chinese economy, which it saw overtaking the United States in purchasing power parity soon after 2015 and by 2020 using market exchange rates. Chinese real gross domestic product is expected to increase by 5.7 percent annually between 2011 and 2035.
A rise of 1.8 billion in the world's population to 8.6 billion would lead to a spike in global oil demand by more than a 10th to over 99 million bpd by 2035, keeping pressure on oil prices, the IEA said.
The agency's central "New Policies" scenario, which assumes a range of measures are taken to curb oil consumption in Europe, the United States, China and elsewhere, sees the average import cost of oil rise to just over $215 per barrel by 2035 in nominal terms, or $125 in 2011 terms.
If fewer steps are taken to promote renewable energy and curb carbon dioxide emissions, oil was likely to exceed $250 per barrel in nominal terms by 2035 and reach $145 in real terms -- almost level with the record highs seen four years ago.
The share of coal in primary energy demand will fall only slightly by 2035.
Fossil fuels in general will remain dominant in the global energy mix, supported by subsidies that, in 2011, jumped by almost 30 percent to $523 billion, due mainly to increases in the Middle East and North Africa.
