Re: [mukto-mona] Gay mathematician gets royal pardon
The Victorian Brits belonged to highly immoral species. They were used to hiding dirt under the carpet and have a gulf of difference between what they preached and practiced. That good old sense of decency has not withered away.

The same high standards and magnanimity cannot be assigned to America. When scores of people from across the globe had been kidnapped and imprisoned in Guantanamo Bay on suspicion of terrorism and many of them had been found to be totally innocent, American government did not come up and apologised to them and compensated them for the injustice. When millions of blacks had been mistreated, segregated and denied opportunities in 1950s and 1960s, American government did not compensate them.

I have serious problems with the words, "pardon" and "amnesty", when they are applied to victims and fighters of injustice.Alan Turing did not do any crime, and he did not need any 'pardon'. The British government did a gross injustice to him in 1952 by castrating him. The British government and their royalty are the ones that needed pardoning by him (his departed soul or his family), not the other way around. Obviously, the British have not yet gotten civilized enough to seek an unconditional pardon from him, and are talking the nonsense of pardoning him instead.SuBain=====================================From: subimal chakrabarty <subimal@yahoo.com>

[mukto-mona] (unknown)
dear all,
two news items in today's indian express merit noting.
1. the maharashtra congress has decided to field only winnable candidates for the may 2014 lok sabha elections at a meeting held in delhi. caste and community considerations will befactored in. the headline says "top leadership has indicated winnability factor alone will be considered." this, when read along with the intention to put up the existing mps, less 5 or so, for re-election will indicate what the congress means by winnability. simple: winnability for the congress again means money and muscle - the same things that brought these mps to the lok sabha in 2009. nothing is changing for the congress: no emphasis on development, no action on criminals who robbed adarsh flats off war widows etc. etc. etc. so much for rahul gandhi's talk about corruption being the bane of the country - pure hot air.
2. karnataka bjp unit is shamelessly pressurising the bjp central leadership to bring back super-corrupt yeddy back into the party and the party leadership has been unable - till now - to say a firm no. is the bjp unable to say a firm no to yeddy because it still wants his corrupt money and muscle power to win elections in karnataka? the bjp doesnt seem to have any compunctions in holding on to criminals like amit shah and yeddy. namo chooses to be silent on these aspects while delivering his thundering speeches nailing the corrupt congress and dishing out cooked up "facts and data" that suit him.
that much for the OGPs, congress and bjp. time is ripe to bring in NGPs whose only plank is good and economic governance without any wasteful freebees. they will put up only clean candidates.
think before you vote next year. this time there is a very good chance of bringing in a lot of good, clean and upright candidates from the NGPs. they dont need to form the govt. in sufficient numbers they can force the majority party to bring in effective legislation and ensure good governance - at least far better governance than what the mainstream national parties have done till now.

You know why the Sun did not set in the British empire? As the saying went, even God was afraid of being sodomized by the Brits in the dark!
