[ALOCHONA] Talks necessary for maritime boundary demarcation

Talks necessary for maritime boundary demarcation

Speakers yesterday said that bilateral and multilateral negotiations is very important to find solution to the problem of national issues like maritime boundaries, demarcation of boarder, Asian highway with neighbouring countries.

Addressing a dialogue on "Bangladesh's Maritime Boundary Concerns, Regional Tensions and the Centre Myanmar Faction" organized by Neeti Gobeshona Kendro, a private research at CIRDAP Auditorium, they said that the national consensus can help to solve the problems.

Prof Dr Tareque Shamsur Rehman moderated the dialogue while columnist Farhad Mazhar, Prof Dr Dilara Chowdhury, journalist Jaglul Ahmed Chowdhury, Abu Sayed Khan, Prof Maimul Ahsan, Prof Khairul Azim, Prof Monsoor Huda, former Ambassador Rased Ahmed Chowdhury, Ayesha Kabir, Farida Akter, Maj (retd) Rashed Ahmed Chowdhury, Ziaur Rahman Chowdhury spoke on the dialogue.

Farhad Mazhar said that the dispute regarding on maritime boundary with the Myanmar and India is a part of control of worldwide energy resources. "We must proceed forward keeping that reality in mind," he said adding that several 'contractors' of multinational companies were active to promote their selfish interest. Earlier US oil company Conocophilips was awarded an offshore block for gas and oil search, he said adding that now they want eight blocks on the offshore.

He alleged that the multinational companies have been trying to make the country act as per their desire. "For this they engaged the 'so-called' civil society personals here," he added. "We cannot control our own maritime resources until we can uphold our national dignity," Mazhar said.

Prof Dr Dilara Chowdhury said that USA, China and India are playing vital role in geopolitics of this region. "So, Bangladesh has a major challenge to sustain in the geopolitics," she added.

Bangladesh could build better diplomatic relations with Myanmar if it wants, she said adding that unfortunately it could not be promote the relationship due mainly to indifference.

The government, she said, could not take any initiative to promote better ties also with neighbouring India to solve the problems as regards Asian highway, Prof Dilara alleged.

Abu Sayed Khan said that political harmony between government and opposition parties are required to take any decision on issues of national interest. "But foreign affairs of the country changes here with the change of government in our country," he said. He said that only bilateral relations with India and Myanmar could solve the maritime boundary problems.

Prof Prof Maimul Ahsan said that we can save our natural resources if we can get rid of political meanness. Earlier, Mahbubul Haque presented the keynote paper.

[ALOCHONA] BD diaspora in the west

I agree that Bureaucracy and Establishment of the country considers us a lot more smarter and advance people a threat and does not want us back. In Pakistan its the same way, why should our Rulers be different?
.
What I can do is, get some Industrial Work done in Bangladesh to create jobs there instead of moving there from USA. I have a friend, who would be back in Bangladesh in a day or two and start my project. If the Animal is too big, Wolves do not attack it in Jungle. I think, I am such an Animal for Wolves there. I would not tolerate any B.S. and if the Establishment does not create hurdles, I may create over 22,000 good paying jobs and increase Bangladesh export by a few hundred million dollars a year soon.

[ALOCHONA] Those Vice Chancellors

Very unusually I happen to watch the full show in a WB's channel, where the two VC's of Jadappur and Kolkata universities were discussing on their recent rating by a national agency. I was struck by their decency, humbleness and intelligent articulation.

We do not watch any Indian or Pakistani channel normally and most or all of it are deleted from the list except two paki channels mainly for my wife to watch their cookery shows and this Indian channel came recently while tuning afresh.

Due to my avid interest in our educational issues started watching and admiring these two VC's discussions. Both of them wearing no tie or jacket, wearing no false mask while they are arguing- as if each one is complementing the other, though their Uni's rating varies greatly.

Every time a call comes both of them raise their joined palms with customary greeting 'namashkar'. Their criticism of government policies, infrastructure or environment, more of technical than cynical outburst. Their research – the rating is mainly based on number of research papers, its resources, technical and infrastructural strength, practical applications and whole deliberation was based on optimism and full of wisdom.

Contrary to the above, our VC's will appear in any talk show with full gear as if they have come to attend a dinner party (as I have seen them) and speak venom against the previous system and deliberate the same chorus in line with their political masters.

We do not know much about kind and quality of research the country's premier institution like Dhaka University does every year, what is its strength and its prospects. It is frustrating to see and understand the dilapidated status of our education system. As per the Wikipedia its rating is down word since 2006. Teachers are not to be blamed alone, it should be the whole environment that is being created and system that has been put in place over the years.
Though all VC's are politically placed yet the VC's blind backing for their political gurus fail to attract much for their own institutions. This is very strange, yet sad.

For research if done for love of the matter can attract conventional, institutional and also private endowment, industry owners can be attracted and brought in for applied research.

4/5 years ago, the World Bank was pressing hard for the ridiculous indemnity bill, I wrote a small letter to an English daily - why cann't we pursue WB to provide US$5 million for research to create an endowment for Dhaka university!

My little understanding on chemistry, physics, economics and political science, research can produce tangible and sustainable benefits to industries and society if rightly guided endeavor is made despite the resource constraint. And BD Diaspora with an effective initiative can help build facilities and operating frame work.

[mukto-mona] FW: Why Mother Can Not See Her Child : Story Of Twins Seperated

Why Mother Can Not See Her Child  : Story Of Twins Seperated

Daily New Age has reported that Lovely Mallick, the mother of joint-headed twins Krishna and Trishna who were separated at Melbourne Royal Children Hospital in Australia recently by sixteen surgeons and specialists after a marathon 29-hour operation, is now praying for her children.  She says she wishes to see them once, just once. The twins were born on 22 December, 2006, at the Patients' Nursing Home at Phulbari Gate in Khulna city. Twenty-two-year old Lovely Mallick, a fourth year Diploma student of the agriculture course of Shaheed Flight Lieutenant Masud Memorial  College at Keshobpur upazila headquarters in Jessore district, got married with her poor illiterate neighbour, Kartik Chandra Mallick, 30, of village Rongpur under Dumuria upazila in Khulna district in 2004. Poverty and the inability to foot the doctors' bills forced the couple to give the girls to an institution founded by Mother Teresa, Nirmola Shishu Bhaban, located at Sonadanga in Khulna city. 'The clinic's authority helped us to keep the babies healthy. After hearing about Mother Teresa's institution, I offered my children to its authorities in January 2007, just 16 days after their birth, assuring them that I would never want them back if they arranged proper treatment for them' said Lovely.  'I saw the news of their separation in a local newspaper on Wednesday, and I felt overjoyed that my children are still alive after the operation,' Lovely told New Age on Friday afternoon. Bursting into tears of both joy and sorrow, Lovely said that it was, of course, good news for her and her family, but she is sad that she could not see her babies since February 2007 after they were sent to Australia. But she cannot demand to see them as she had offered them unconditionally.

We are surprised that Mallika  can not get back her children. Why she should be asked to sign an agreement which is harmful mother’s interest. This is not justified in morality. In the name of treatment to adopt a child and change his/her religion ( as is obvious) are offensive. It is strange Mother Teresa’s organization helps in such agreements. We think mother in this case has the right to get back the child and Australian government should help her.An agreement made under duress can not be acceptable.
