RE: BANGLADESH WINS FREEDOM

Dear All:

I remain grateful for the below replies sent to me by way of feed-back to my short query in the esteemed Mukto-Mona blog. It seems from my reading various words of communications that still the people of Bangladesh are dominated by the deep shadow of threat of horror in thinking freely. There is freedom of thought, but in Bangladesh style, as there is Democracy in Bangladesh in Bangladesh style.

The subject of Bangladesh achieving freedom as a sovereign state is not yet exactly transparent. It needs study and analysis. The partition of India in 1947 is also mystery – shrouded. There are many unknown important secret vested interest role of Jawaharlal Nehru, Sardar Patel, Mahatma Gandhi, Dr. Shyama Prasad Mukherjee, Mohammed Ali Jinnah etc. Let us hope the time will come when the truths will come out. Better late, than never.

Thank you once again for you updates.

WHO CAUSED LIBERATION OF BANGLADESH

a. Sheikh Mujib: He agitated a lot against the Pakistani regime but till his surrender in the midnight of 25 March1971, he was negotiating for and was hopeful of becoming Prime Minister of Pakistan. His role in forming 'independent' Bangladesh is apparently minimal. Neither he declared independence, nor did he give any leadership during the fight for liberation.  Admittedly, it is fear of his leadership that led Pakistani rulers to crack down on East Pakistan (that caused the liberation of Bangladesh).

b. Zia: He was a great freedom fighter, one of the successful battle field leaders. He is unparalleled as he was the first to rebel and fight back Pakistani army. He is unparalleled because it him who declared independence of Bangladesh on 27 March 1971 when the nation was totally confused in absence of any guidance from Sheikh Mujib, or any other national leader like Bhashani, Awami League or any other party. However, as far as causation of liberation of Bangladesh is to be addressed, his role is limited to his declaration of independence from 27 March to 1 April 1971.

c. Yahha Khan: Played a major role (in causing liberation of Bangladesh) by deciding to crack down on East Pakistan. His role was indeed a decisive factor. If he had allowed Sheik Mujib to form government of Pakistan, following Dec1970 election,  as he promised in February and early March 1971, there would be no independent Bangladesh today.

d. Mr Bhutto: Played a major role by obstinately  resisting election of Sheikh Mujib as the Prime Minister of Pakistan after victory of Awami League in the Election of1970. If he agreed, Shekh would form the government of Pakistan and the hope of liberating Bangladesh, if any one had, would not ever see light.

e. USA: USA's role is not clear in my assessment. It helped by not helping Pakistani Regime in November, December. Its 7th fleet could do havoc; did nothing.

f. USSR: Its support was important.

g. India: People of East Pakistan would not be able to fight for liberation in a successful way if India did not give them shelter and arms. The air assault of December 1971 was smart enough to compel the Pakistan Army in East Pakistan to decide to wrap up and surrender. Otherwise the people of East Pakistan would have to struggle longer. Fighting was continuing near Khulna till the afternoon of 17 December. On the other hand, without the help of Indian forces, Quader Siddiqui was very near  to Dhaka with his capable Bahini. Indian support all in all was vital.

h.Mrs Indira Gandhi: Her decision to help people of Bangladesh was critically important Her decision to help people of East Pakistan in their fight against Pakistani regime was bold and crucially important.

i. West Pakistanis: Not any significant role. (Honestly, I am not sure, got  to research)

j. Freedom Fighters:  It is their selfless, fearless spirit that led to the establishment of independent Bangladesh.They started with revenging the killing of their father or mother, sister or brother, of friends and relatives in the hands of Pakistanis.  However, gradually it transformed into the fight against an 'occupation army'. They dreamed of liberating East Pakistan from Pakistani occupation. They succeeded at the cost of their lives.

k. Bengali language: A role may be traced back to 1952, that's it. In 1971, language movement was only a referral point without much 'conspicuous' significance.

l. Mohajirs: Am not aware of any significant role in 'causing' liberation of Bangladesh. They suffered huge causality in the month of (end) March to (early) May 1971 just because they spoke Urdu like the Pakistanis. Their complicity with Pakistani Army in 1971 played no significant role in establishing independent Bangladesh. .

m. Bengali Hindus: Count of Bengali Hindus among the freedom fighters was unfortunately very very low. However, a majority proportion of Indian people who gave shelter to people of Bangladesh were Bengali Hindus of West Bengal, Meghalaya, Asam and Tripua.

n. Bengali Muslims: (i) Most of the freedom fighters were Bengali Muslims. (ii) Bangladesh would have remained today merely a state of India, like West Bengal, after partition in 1947, if Bengali Muslims did not demand a separate state. If East Pakistan was not born 1977, there would be no scope of liberating it and establishing independent Bangladesh in 1971.

o. Indian Army: Played a very vital role in training people of Bangladesh who wanted to fight against the armed forces of Pakistan. Their role in December was very significant. Otherwise war of liberation, that is fight against the Pakistani army would continue for a few more months.

q. Pakistani Army: Most significant role. It is because of their crackdown, killing, torture, arson, rape and destruction that the entire nation decided to cut off with Pakistan and go for an independent country.

r. Israel: Am not aware of any role.

s. CIA: Am not aware of any significant role.

t. KGB: Am not aware of any significant role.

u. Swadhin Bangla Betar Kendar: Played a very VERY significant role since 27 March 1971 with declaration of independent Bangladesh from it Kalurghat Chittagong. For the first time, a dream of independent Bangladesh was floated in unequivocal terms. A message was created and passed on that people of Bangladesh have to fight for liberating their country occupied by Pakistani army.

v. Other factors: Awami League leaders of April of 1971: By forming a government of independent "Bangla Desh", they gave a shape to the idea of a "liberation of East Pakistan" that Sheikh Mujib did NOT do.

w. Other factors: Pakistan government of November1971: Half way through November, the then government of Pakistan decided to 'desert' East Pakistan; and this decision was critical. Though there was no declaration reinforcement was discontinued in the last week of November, and many parts of Bangladesh saw light of the day as an independent land in the first week of December as Pakistan army started to wind up; and move to Dhaka.

I would like to hear from your learned readers as to who caused the liberation of Bangladesh? Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, Ziaur Rahman, Yahya Khan, Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto, USA, USSR, India,Indira Gandhi, the then West Pakistanis, Freedom Fighters of the territory now comprising Bangladesh, Bengali language, Mohajirs, Bengali Hindus, Bengali Muslims, Indian Army, Pakistani Army, Israel, CIA, KGB,  or other factors.

>>>>>>>> N
ot sure about Israeli role in liberation of Bangladesh. Rest of the parties contributed in freeing us from what morphed  into neo-colonial master on Bengali population. Attacking our culture and identity. While Pakistan itself did not create any solid identity for itself.

For example Urdu is not a native language of Pakistan. But it was accepted as a common language of Pakistan (Like English is used to
bind Indians today). If Pakistani leadership had a functioning brain they would have waited a little longer to get accepted. Our Brother and sisters from West Bengal already surrendered their culture, language etc to Indian union and from a nation it reduced itself to a "State" of India!!

But Pakistani leaders were too focused on glorifying their own sorry state and left the country to anarchy. History will tell us that, Bengali Muslims worked very hard ( Including our father of the nation Sheikh Mujibur Rahman) to create Pakistan. They were "Sold" to the promise of Pakistan only to be betrayed by the west Pakistani political structure( Note I do not blame people of Pakistan for this
but leadership!). They were not the only one. Many communities were "Betrayed" by the non-functioning state.

I feel you have to do extensive research on connections between parties. There are evidences about communications among parties and many books were written on this topic. However one has to separate fiction from non-fictional history. Some of our "Authentic" narratives are not commonly known but should be preserved to stay true to our future generations.

BANGLADESH WINS FREEDOM

I have been studying the historic emergence of Bangladesh as a sovereign country since 1971. Considering the socio-political history of Bengal from the time of British occupation many subjects are coming up to me as the contributing factors leading to the liberation of Bangladesh.

Next comes the question: Was there any explicit or implicit understanding between the above parties?

Your learned feedback will greatly help me in creating a good monograph which may help the future generations the truths about the appearance and reality.

[ALOCHONA] Corridor / Transit roads

Transit to India Through Ashuganj, Akhaura

Roads in bad shape

Port infrastructure not yet ready for handling goods

A dangerous gaping hole on Ramrail Bridge in Brahmanbaria. Railings of the bridge are coming apart. This stretch of road is an integral part of a transit route for India. Infrastructure has not been developed, but transit is on. Inset, this road at Akhaura is too narrow for large vehicles.

Poor infrastructure, inadequate logistics and manpower in Ashuganj and Akhaura ports are severely hampering the handling of transit consignments bound for India.

About 20km of the 47-kilometre Ashuganj-Akhaura road is narrow and potholed, while some bridges and culverts along the way are in a sorry state.

Ashuganj River Port has yet to have a permanent jetty and a container terminal. A makeshift jetty built with sacks of concrete and sand last year is now handling transit goods and over dimensional cargoes (ODC)--freights that are beyond the normal size of standard containers.

During a visit to the port recently, The Daily Star found no permanent customs and BIWTA offices. Customs officials hardly attend to their duties at the temporary office on the first floor of Chisti Filling Station at Ashuganj bazar."The river port remains on paper only, as it has no functioning infrastructure," said Firuz Sikder, vice-president of Ashuganj Upazila Chamber of Commerce and Industry.He thought the temporary jetty is very risky as it is often threatened by high tides. "The now-shut Ashuganj Fertiliser Factory can be of huge benefit for us if its jetty is made usable again. We have written to the BSCIC so we can use it."

The half-kilometre dirt road from the jetty to Ashuganj bazar is also in a miserable state.Transport owners and businessmen at Ashuganj underscored developing the river port to a full-fledged one to boost transit trade.

The government has taken an initiative to build a new port with Tk 245 crore Indian credit. It will be set up on 32 acres of land near the present port to the south of the Meghna. The authorities are yet to acquire the required land."The Planning Commission has endorsed a project in this regard. We have sent the project documents to India for approval," said Shah Alam Khan, a member of National Board of Revenue.

Akhaura Land Port, which was inaugurated in August last year, is now struggling to handle the extra load of ODC and transit goods. Several hundred lorries always remain stranded on the roads due to lack of space at the port yard.The normal activities at the port are being hampered as the authorities are giving priority to handling the transit and ODC consignments. The port can accommodate about 100 trucks, Superintendent of the Port Hamidur Rahman told The Daily Star. "Although the port yard is being expanded under a project, there is no shed or weighbridge here."

Of the total 19 bridges and culverts on Ashuganj-Agartala road, several including the Ramrail bridge are in poor state. A bailey bridge has been installed there which has also become risky. All the vehicles carrying transit goods are now using a diversion road.The condition of 11 km of the transit route -- Ashuganj to Sarail Biswa Road -- is good as it is part of Dhaka-Sylhet highway. But around 20 km road from Sarail to Brahmanbaria is dilapidated.

"We have taken a project worth Tk 235 crore to develop the 20 km road with bridges and culverts," said Jahangir Alam, executive engineer of Roads and Highways Department in Brahmanbaria.Tender will be floated soon for the project after getting clearance from the communications ministry, he added.The road from Sultanpur to Akhaura port is now being developed with Tk 28 crore from Indian fund.

When trial transit began last month, the communications ministry wrote to Brahmanbaria RHD office for their comments on the condition of roads and bridges."We will soon send a reply to say that the existing facilities are not enough for transporting transit goods and ODC," said RHD official Jahangir.Officials concerned said development of Ashuganj River Port and the road up to Akhaura Land Port will take three to five years if the work starts immediately.

[ALOCHONA] The Abul model

The Abul model

Afsan Chowdhury

So is it true what the AL MP Golam Maula Rony said about our prime minister choosing a future minister by organising a race? Who knows but it certainly shows our PM in a positive light. Not only is she interested in sports particularly in foreign venues but she seems to have great sense of humour too. She has also set up a precedent for all to follow when choosing important people for significant positions. Seriously speaking, this is certainly a better way than holding national elections, and it costs less too.

Imagine our leaders in shorts and vests running across the fields in full view of cheering people knowing that on the results depend who will rule Bangladesh till the next Olympics. It will make the 15th amendment unnecessary, controversial judges irrelevant and maybe replace the Elections Commission with the National Sports Commission.
* * *
Abul Hossain, by the way, has emerged as the most significant minister of recent times. In fact if one goes by history, our ministers have always been sporting chaps and always ready to do all for their leader. I remember the fabled Anwar Zahid who promised to sweep the floors at the bidding of his president, HM Ershad. He was hugely criticised for his pledge but sources say he never recovered from the shock of ever being asked to prove his loyalty to his leader.

I think that in every way, Abul Hossain has done much better and has actually done his run, or metaphorically speaking given 'jharu'. His wish was fulfilled and our PM, then the leader of the opposition, came to know the quality of her ministers before choosing.  Congrats and medals to everyone.

* * *
Politicians are always supposed to provide examples and models and I think this 'race' in China is a remarkable event which shows us new ways to choose CEOs too. For example, if anyone thinks that the Bangladesh Bank chief should be chosen from amongst those who can understand the national economy, they are wrong. Future contesting central bank chiefs may well be asked to swim across the flooded roads of Motijheel carrying a briefcase full of notes on their head with their hands tied behind their backs holding a spoon in their mouth till they reach the gate of the bank; you know the kind of race we ran when we were in grade 3.

And the one who wins the race will be the governor.

* * *

I am not going by the order of precedence but we should have a more appropriate way of finding judicial officers– the judges and the like. We know that a major skill required is in identifying relief funds, welfare funds and Jamuna Bridge funds, etc. which allow them to obtain exclusive grants when needed but there are other skills too.

I used to think once that Justices were good to go if one wanted to pass amendments after martial law to make it halal and act as the head of state when the government was in khaki hands. But the military has let us down by not taking power in a decade. I mean seriously guys, if the army too finds out that it's more fun to rule the rulers than take the direct heat, amra jabo koi?

But it has also now made the post of judges less attractive and the death blow was struck by the 15th amendment under which the judges who could have had a few days of badsahi can't anymore. So what are they going to do? Well, why not select them through music competitions?

Justice and music are close and since the only difference between most judges now is their party loyalty, this could actually be a more pleasant method for selecting than just going by seniority and partisanship. Singing judges able to deliver verdicts by way of songs could make even death sentences more palatable and verdicts that cause political problems seen as a musical issue rather than legal ones since few can make out why they get decided that way.

Sabina Yasmin is therefore the logical choice for our next Chief Justice-ship.

* * *

Bureaucrats should be chosen for their skills in speed reading. Since most files take several years to be cleared, ghoosh or no ghoosh, it's obviously so because they can't read fast enough. Average files take two years to move so if they learn to read faster, they can actually get some work done while they apply for government land and play in the share market.

Dear BNP boys, now mostly OSD, here is a good way to spend your leisure till Khaleda Zia returns. By the time your chances come to serve your coach, you may actually be able to prove who is better qualified to get the plum jobs through a real competition. Higher file turnovers also mean more money per file don't you see?

* * *
RAB is the mother institution of the country, more reliable than the rest of the bunch of state organists about whose loyalty you are never sure. Half of them belong to the other party anyway but with RAB this is different. They are always loyal as a block to the government side so they have done maro-petao with every government without any discrimination. All they ask is a bit of dry bread, some salt and a bottle of mineral water and lots of shantarshis whom they can beat up and occasionally kill.

They are a very dedicated lot, full of sacrifice and loved for their skills. So one must look for RAB recruits amongst beauty parlour workers who spend so much time to make brides and other women beautiful using great skills no matter who is getting married. After all, it's the delicacy and commitment to their art and totally non-partisan attitude that matters. Maybe even a few sari sellers – apa, niye jan – or dare I say baburchis who cook magical dishes of biryani. It's a lot about making good tikiya and feeding everyone.

So we can have wedding competitions and the best performers — parlour gents and ladies, sariwallahs and followers of Fakhruddin — the cook not the 1/11 guy — can become the future RAB members knowing all about providing entertainment and pleasure to a large and satisfied public.

* * *

The national elections or sports should become a nationwide festival where the decisions will be fair, well contested and provide entertainment for all. Instead of selling seats for millions of taka, parties will be forced to depend on raw talent of the candidates and it will reduce unnecessary expenditures. It will also reduce inflation, TV channels and talk shows where unreliable MPs can shoot their crazy mouth off.

I can write much but I leave it to the readers to imagine and enjoy.

* * *
My ultimate fantasy of course would be to see Jamaat-e-Islami leaders in shorts, their beards nicely tied to reduce wind obstruction chasing the baton in a relay with other parties.

I always wanted to see their knees.
