[mukto-mona] “an apple a day keeps the doctor away

TUESDAY, Dec. 17, 2013 — You've heard the old saying "an apple a day keeps the doctor away," and it turns out that the phrase is actually sage advice after all, according to a new study published in the journal BMJ. Researchers from the University of Oxford in the United Kingdom found that prescribing an apple a day to all adults age 50 or older in the United Kingdom would prevent around 8,500 heart attack and stroke deaths every year – similar to the number that could be prevented by prescribing statins to that same group, without any of the side effects.
The researchers created a mathematical model to test the adage, and compared the effects of a daily apple to the effects of prescribing a statin per day to the 17.6 million people in the U.K. who are candidates for them, but currently not prescribed them. Assuming 70 percent of the population complied with the prescription, and that their overall number of calories remained the same, a daily apple could save an average of 8,500 lives every year, compared to 9,400 lives saved by a daily statin.
"The Victorians had it about right when they came up with their brilliantly clear and simple public health advice: 'An apple a day keeps the doctor away,'" study author Adam Briggs, MSc, academic clinical fellow at the University of Oxford, said in a statement. "It just shows how effective small changes in diet can be, and that both drugs and healthier living can make a real difference in preventing heart disease and stroke."
Apples contain heart-healthy compounds that combine to make it an under-the-radar superfruit. Among the compounds are:
  • Pectin – a form of soluble fiber shown to lower blood pressure and blood sugar.
  • Quercetin – a flavonoid shown to prevent inflammation and asthma that has also been linked to cancer prevention.
  • Phytochemicals – a variety compounds that have been linked to a reduction in cardiovascular disease and cancer.
An apple a day also comes without the side effects of statins, according to the study. Using apples instead of pills would result in more than one thousand fewer cases of muscle disease and more than 10,000 fewer diagnoses of diabetes that would arise if this population was all prescribed statins – something David Friedman, MD, chief of heart failure services at North Shore-LIJ's Franklin Hospital in Long Island, N.Y., said underscores the benefit of helping your heart through diet and exercise, instead of medicine.
"I've always joked that statins should be in the water," Dr. Friedman said, "and many doctors have been saying that for years. But clearly, there are side effects that need to be considered. This study shows that an ounce of prevention might be worth more than a pound of cure."
However, Friedman stressed that for some people, simply eating an apple won't offer the same benefit as taking a statin.
"If someone comes to me and is active and healthy, but has high cholesterol, I'll try telling them to eat an apple a day," he said. "But if that person has a number of other risk factors for heart disease, such as smoking or a family history, statins may be the best way to go."
But pairing both statins and an apple a day in people at risk for heart disease would be best, Friedman added.
"A simple addition of an apple a day is a clear way to have a cost-effective prevention of heart disease," he said, "but if the benefits outweigh the risks, and they usually do, statins still offer the best bang for your buck – especially when paired with a healthy diet."

Can you be specific about what you mean by neo-razakar? Is Quader Siddiquey one of them? Please don't hide what you have in your mind. If you open up your mind, we can have a meaningful debate. Looking forward to hearing from you soon.

I do not think anyone with some common sense will even attempt to "Undermine" anything of 1971.

But we have anti-liberation force of our time as well. As a nation we have to keep our eyes peeled to locate those traitors as well.

I do not think anyone will ever try to establish any logic for us to like Mirzafar. In the same spirit we should continue to look after interest of our people and our country. Neo-razakars may face justice in future and why not? According to Islamic history, US laws and laws of every civilized nations treason is a serious crime. If someone or some groups try to sabotage interest of our Bangladesh, they will face justice.

We have to have ONE standard for all criminals. NO one (Only inside your head) is asking to mixing anything up here. Crime against humanity is surely crime and those criminals should face justice. Member Avijit spoke about times when part of our history was blocked from us and I agree.

History tells us any willful distortion cannot stand the test of time and truth will shine in the long run. Old and new razakars should remember this lesson.

Shalom!

To understand the correct narrative of spirit of 1971, elaborate on the four state principles of 1972 original constitution.

Read history or ask some one knowledgeable to know what you should mean my razakar, albadar, alshams, and collaborators of 1971.

Mixing up the razakars of 1971 with so called 'neo-razakars' is a tactic used by those who want to undermine the crimes committed by the anti liberation forces who engaged in heinous crimes against humanity.

Did all these people die so we can throw big parties, make the biggest flag or establish justice, peace, food security, safety for ALL people of this country?

History tells us every country had their tiny share of "Rajakars" or "Mirzafars". We have to ensure we mark the "New Mirzafars/rajakars" of our time and destroy their plot from our walk to establish justice, food security, peace and security for ALL citizens of our country.

Rajakars/Mirzafars come with different dress, message and costumes in different times, our LOVE for our country and people will have to be the criterion which will help us to separate these Rajakars/mirzafars from the rest of our population.

Thank you for speaking from your heart, I just wanted to add my two cents to it.

May peace be unto you!

Here is only a partial list of businesses and corporations owned by or affiliated with the Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami. Their revenues go into billions of Takas and they employ tens of thousands of workers and students.

Many who support the JI in BD are armed and operate as death squads in the true spirit of the Egyptian Muslim Brotherhood and their mother organization, the Jamaat-e-Islami of Pakistan.

In addition the JI gets moral, if not material support from Saudi Arabia, Turkey and Pakistan, as well as the ISI's LeT and other terror networks.

He used to work till late hours in the morning and walked miles after miles in the rural Bangladesh. But these are not the only things a nation expects from a leader.

3. He captured and consolidated power at the cost of valuable lives of our national heroes. He betrayed the constitution and gave it an Islamic color. Instead of giving power back to the people's representatives he corrupted the political system to his personal interest. He reinstated the known anti liberation forces.

Telling the truth is difficult with people. Collectively we often criticize Ziaur Rahman and some of them are valid. Still I feel he made many positive contributions as well. Why are we shy to speak that truth? Those who lived in Bangladesh know the challenges we faced and how Zia stabilized the country. Like many of you, I wished he made different choices in some cases but it is not fair to go after everything he did. Specifically when certain sub-human question his contribution as a leader of our war of independence.

I have known many Mukti-Joddhas who abhors many positions Zia taken as a leader of this country but I am yet to find a genuine freedom fighter who denied his leadership and courage during 1971.

It is a damn shame that, we live in a free country but do not show respect to a leader who was one of the top leaders of that war.

I feel free thinkers should really be free from baggage of politics when we discuss history.

Shalom!

Judicious responses to my following post might have, I am afraid, left an impression in the minds of the respectable free thinkers that I am a great fan of Zia, which I am absolutely not as should be evident from my earlier posts on Zia. I have used the word "undid" to summarize all the notorious things he did. He undid our basic constitutional principles. He undid the very political system based on which the country could have moved forward the democratic movement towards perfection. He has made every thing almost a mission possible and we are now in a total mess.

I have used the word "pragmatism" in a narrow sense--it was a pragmatism exclusively from the perspective of Zia and his perpetuating the power.

Yes, every ruler has made "adjustment" and is still making "adjustment" with the foreign interests. It is the power politics. They will compromise at the costs of national pride and freedom and sta y in power. We wish our rulers would not give in and work independently. The solution is not very realistic as our leaders would not risk losing power. This makes us as a nation unfortunate. And we know we are not alone.

Again I insist that we do not need a foreign ruler to take care of our business. I am conscious that it will not happen in one day. Our leaders should have greater reliance on people and that should be the source of their strength.

With his high self esteem and iron rule he did and undid things to his people and the political system of Bangladesh which nobody else could do. He would have never welcomed physically a foreign agent to supervise his job as the head of the country and the head of the state. This is true for any ruler Bangladesh has ever seen.

It is possible that under Saudi request Zia stopped deploying female police on the street. Now as nation heavily dependent on foreign aid and earnings, Zia simply took a pragmatic decision. And this is typical of any ruler we have seen so far. It has nothing to do with the self esteem of a particular leader.

I was referring to those intellectuals who believe from heart that the people of Bangladesh are not capable of running their own show and hence they need a foreign ruler.

[mukto-mona] RE: Regarding Lamaat-shibir

I don't know why you you are conversing with me on my private mail on this topic of public interest.
However, I agree with most of the points you've made regarding the history of success of Jamaat in the political scene, and now in the financial arena in Bangladesh. Not much argument there.
I will argue vehemently, though, about one point you made, not only because it is factually erroneous, but because it leads to wrong interpretation of current events.  You are not quite correct, and even self-contradictory (after admitting Awami League patronization of Jamaat),  when you state "Awami League started trial of their central leaders on political ill-motive only ( forming a controversial court comprising of Awami Judges and lawyers )  to weaken BNP alliance . . ."
Demanding trial of the local Bangalee 1971 War criminals has a long record of being the central force of a strong citizens' movement.  Awami League defaulted on its promise to hold the trials in their term in 1996. In the election cycle of 2008, it is doubtful that they would have had the spectacular winning result at the polls if they did not make the election promise of creating a War Crimes Tribunal for trying the crimes of 1971. The credit, if you can call it that, does not fully belong to AL.
Despite desultory appearances, Jamaat is NOT being confronted by this outgoing Govt. either politically or forcefully.  Once again, let me agree with you, and hope that the nation's rejection of Jamaat and its foreign ideology will follow suit and result in its disappearance from this land.

Your position on the subject means Jamaat is a successful organization patronized by Awami League and BNP for the last 42 years. If they were punished just after liberation then the nation would not have noticed this violence now being held in the country. Jamaat did not disturb in Bangladesh for the last 42 years, they were engaged into their own politics and building economic strong-hold, got valid registration to continue politics in Bangladesh, captured parliament seats also. But after 42 years when Awami League started trial of their central leaders on political ill-motive only ( forming a controversial court comprising of Awami Judges and lawyers )  to weaken BNP alliance, then Jamaat Shibir started to revenge as it is against their existence. This is the reality. If you think Chhatra League rather has become a heinous terrorist organization, proved themselves by their criminal / offensive activities for the last 5 years. Jamaat should have been confronted  politically rather than forcefully, if nation rejects them they would have disappeared from the country, but now they will continue in Bangladesh years together as Al-Qaeda activists.
