RE: [ALOCHONA] ASIF NAZRUL , THE DUBIOUS !!!!!!!

Where did you see alcoholic drinks ? If you observe properly then you will notice the fruit juice dispensers on the table behind Asif !!!

Further, why do you term Asif Nazrul, one of the few remaining honest intellectuals in Bangladesh as a Jamati intellectual ? Will anyone who speaks his or her mind in today's Bangladesh will be a Jamati in your distorted analysis ?? One can only have pity on you.

Open Letter to Sheikh Hasina: By Dr. Ali Alghamdy, KSA

Your Excellency, let me introduce myself to you as a Saudi diplomat who visited Bangladesh before it became independent. I was dispatched in the 1960s by the Saudi government to Chittagong to issue Bangladeshi pilgrims Haj visas. In the 1980s I returned to Bangladesh as a plenipotentiary at the Saudi Embassy in Dhaka.
After retirement, a group of people who love Bangladesh decided to form the Saudi-Bangladeshi Friendship Association in Jeddah. Our objective was to strengthen bilateral relations and help the Bangladesh workforce in the Kingdom. I was honored to be appointed the secretary general of the association. As founders, we did not have any material interests – we just wanted to enhance the relations between the Kingdom and the world’s third largest Muslim country.
I was honored to meet your father Sheikh Mujibur Rahman in Karachi, specifically at the Round-Table Conference which was held at the behest of President Ayub Khan. The reception was held by G. M. Sayed, Pakistani politician, and I was one of the invitees. I met your father there and was impressed by his charisma and eloquence.
I was honored also to meet you when I was assigned to the Saudi Embassy in Dhaka. During the rule of General Hussein Muhammad Ershad, I followed your activities.
I still vividly remember the day when opposition leaders were arrested and when policemen approached you to arrest you. You said: “Do not touch me, I’m a Muslim woman.” This incident depicted the fact that you are a God-fearing Muslim woman. Besides, you were always keen to perform Umrah whenever you had a chance.
For all these reasons, I would like you to read the following points with mercy and justice.
1.  You know very well the difficult circumstances your father faced following his release from prison and return to Dhaka where he took over as Prime Minister and worked hard to solve the problems from which the country was suffering. He issued several laws including the war crimes law by which 195 Pakistani military officers were convicted. The law did not include any Bangladeshi civilian or politician. Besides, the 195 officers were later pardoned, thus your father won the praise and admiration of the entire Muslim world. At the time, he made his famous statement: “I want the world to know that Bangladeshis can forgive and forget.”
 2.   At the time of your father’s tenure, the government passed a law incriminating those who collaborated with the Pakistani army. Although over 100,000 individuals were arrested, none of them were politicians. Your father decided to pardon and release them. Throughout his tenure, he never leveled charges against any politician. When you became the Prime Minister following the 1996 elections, you did the same. You did not accuse nor did you arrest anyone for war crimes or collaboration with the Pakistani military. You did not do that because your father was decisive about this matter and he pardoned all the individuals involved.
3.      Everyone was surprised when the wise decisions taken by your father were annulled and the issue of war crimes surfaced again. Some consider the revocation of these decisions as disrespect to your father, which is an unacceptable matter. Among those who opposed such revocation was the opposition party and your former government.
4.      Nothing can justify the unjust decision to arrest Muslim leaders who were not arrested during your father’s tenure and yours as well. This decision does not bring any good to the country; on the contrary, it divides people and stirs up trouble, a matter which has direct detrimental consequences to you as the leader of the world’s third largest Muslim country. As someone who loves Bangladesh and its people, I would like to say that many Muslim leaders all over the Muslim world are upset about the arrest of Muslim groups and leaders such as Professor Ghulam Azam who was accused of charges that no one would believe. He was charged with things that were done 40 years ago. He was not charged with them at the time.
5.      I hope that you will reconsider the decision of arresting those Muslim groups and leaders without justification for such arrests. For the sake of your father who did not arrest anyone on similar charges at the time, please order the release of those arrested as such a decision will win you people’s appreciation and will be a way of showing your deep love for your late father.

[mukto-mona] Of Facts, Statements and Opinions

Of Facts, Statements and Opinions

Sukhamaya Bain

Recently there were some discussions in the Mukto-Mona forum on the subject of facts, statements and opinions. Because of time constraints, I had to be quite late in getting back on the subject. Now that I have some time to kill, let me make some points.

Here are some Dictionary.com definitions.

Fact: "Something that actually exists; reality; truth." "Something known to exist or to have happened." "A truth known by actual experience or observation."

Statement: "Something stated." "A communication or declaration in speech, setting forth facts, particulars, etc." "A single sentence or assertion."

Opinion: "A belief or judgment that rests on grounds insufficient to produce complete certainty." "A personal view, attitude, or appraisal." "The formal expression of a professional judgment."

With a keen awareness of my own limitations, I would say, everything that is written in books, newspapers, dictionaries, articles, etc., are not necessarily correct, accurate, scholarly, or even worth reading. All these sources of learning are written by people, who have their own limitations. To give an example, shortly after I had joined a graduate school in the USA in the early 1980s, one of my professors from Dhaka University wrote a letter to my school's graduate coordinator for a possible research associate position. The graduate coordinator showed me his letter, which had several syntax errors. Now, that professor had a Ph.D. degree from the United Kingdom, and taught me Chemistry at Dhaka University. This is not to say that my own writings are free of errors. But the point is, a lot of things that we see in the written form are indeed inaccurate, faulty, erroneous, etc.

To me, a fact is a fact, even when it has not yet been observed or known through our limited visions. There is no correct or incorrect fact. There are correct and incorrect statements of facts. There are honest and dishonest statements and interpretations of facts. Good judgments or opinions on facts are essential for a good and just world. Bad judgments on facts have been keeping our world unjust and devoid of peace.

To give an example, when one balances one's statement on religious fanaticism in Bangladesh with a statement of religious fanaticism in India, that is a dishonest statement of facts. Here are some honest statements. The religious fanaticism in Bangladesh keeps 'Bismillah' and 'Islam as the State Religion' in the constitution of the country, even when the government with more than two-thirds majority in the parliament claims itself to be secular. The religious fanaticism in India never controlled that country; even during the BJP government, India maintained its secular character. Thus, the balancing act that I am giving as an example can come from two kinds of people: 1) Muslims who wish to maintain the Islamic and Muslim brotherhood fanaticism in Bangladesh, and 2) non-Muslims who wish to appease the Islamic and Muslim brotherhood fanatics, possibly for a softer blow on the non-Muslims when the crime-spree flares up in the future.

As for producing complete certainty, I think honest judgments are what we need. On many issues, a rational person can not come up with complete certainly. Only an ignorant person who does not reason, who just takes the so-called divine words from religious books, is always certain.

Re: [mukto-mona] Re: [notun_bangladesh] Dilip Barua

Thank you Doc for advice. Yeah, I could sense it from man's tantrum. I got nothing against Dr. Yunus. He is a great man and should stay away from the politics. If not, he should join the party and stop using his peace prize as a shield to promote his greatness. That would be totally unwarranted and foolish. He should follow other great Nobel laureates for betterment of our people' lives. Or, else, the man will be thrown into a dustbin as an anomaly of Nobel prize.

Well, I was only trying point at Mr. Bahar's unintelligent joke. But, you seem to have another agenda with superhuman Yunus. No, I do not buy that at all. Dr. Yunus is just another economist, who happened to coin the name Grameen Bank. The name is a good sound bite but it practice, the bank is not any different from any other lender bank. The lending interest is pretty stiff and the bank has failed to deliver what it initially promised. The poorest of poor need zero interest rate and not a 25% rate. This not a Baksal or BNP/ISI issue.
Yunus is not a God and nor he should be beyond of any critic. A Norwegian  peace Nobel prize does not make anybody super human.

Those who criticize Dr. Yunus, they are not even compared to his nail, that's hundred percent true. Dr. Yunus does not need recognition
from Baksalis, World recongnize his ability and quality. Dilip Barua can't even win a unuion council membership election and has quality
to be a descent politician. He just wanted to please his boss Sheikh Hasinawho gave him new life with a Ministerial job (his drream of life).
He is just paying the debt to his Netri .Mr. Barua's comment  should be condemned by civil society.

Hardly any witty joke! Please confine yourself to write your opinions rather than ants/elephants stories.
The problem with Dr. Yunus is that he should stay above the politics than wrestling with politicians. It is a poor choice from his side. Good day to you!

[ALOCHONA] Politics and media

Since there is not much opportunity to score political points by badmouthing Saudi Arabia, it is not likely for our leaders to "Thank" Saudi government for delivering justice. Not forgetting that fact that, we have not been able to protect Saudi diplomat in our own country. We are too eager to criticize others and VERY reluctant to look at ourselves. Hope we can learn from others and be people who are passionate about justice and fairness for ALL.

Anyway just wanted to share the good news. Justice was done for killing an innocent Bangladeshi.

---Shalom!

Saudi man beheaded for killing Bangladeshi in KSA
Riyadh: Saudi authorities on Thursday beheaded a man for murdering one Bangladeshi man and stabbing another during a bid to rob them, the interior ministry said.

Sultan al-Sahli, a Saudi, was convicted of killing one of the Bangladeshis with a blow to the head, and stabbing and wounding the other, said the ministry, cited by state-run SPA news agency.

Sahli wanted to steal their mobile phones and money, it said.

His beheading brings to 26 the total number of executions in the ultra-conservative kingdom so far this year, according to an AFP tally based on official reports.

Under the AFP count, at least 76 people were beheaded in 2011 in Saudi Arabia, while rights group Amnesty International put the number of executions last year at 79.—AFP
