[ALOCHONA] I Want To Tell The World

I Want To Tell The World

Nahida

I want to tell the world a story

About a home with a broken lantern

And a burnt doll

About a picnic that wasn't enjoyed

About an axe that killed a tulip

A story about a fire that consumed a plait

a story about a tear that couldn't run down

I want to tell a story about a goat that wasn't milked

About a mother's dough that wasn't baked

About a wedding that wasn't celebrated

And a baby girl that didn't grow up

About a football that wasn't kicked

About a dove that didn't fly

I want to tell a story about a key that wasn't used

About a classroom that wasn't attended

About a playground that was silenced

About a book that wasn't read

About a besieged lonely farm
And about its fruits that weren't picked

About a lie that wasn't discovered

A story about a church that's no longer prayed in

And a mosque that no longer stands

And a culture no longer rejoiced

I want to tell a story about a muddy grassy roof

About a stone that faced a tank

And about a stubborn flag that refuses to lie down

About a spirit that cannot be defeated

I want to tell the world a story

Now light a little candle for Palestine

You can do it

Light a candle One little candle
Watch the darkness fade away

Just try it out

One ray of light
Wipes away the gloomiest
Jet-black nights
As the dawn breaks

Just observe

Can you see that
All the might of darkness
In the world
Cannot extinguish
The faintest flicker
Of a beam of light

Light a candle
One little candle
Watch the darkness fade away

You can do it

Hey.. WORLD

Did you hear me?

I am a Jerusalem-born Palestinian refugee living in exile for over 42 years. I was forced to leave my homeland, Palestine at the age of seven during the six-day war. I am a mathematician by profession. I started writing about three years ago when my friends insisted I should write about my memories, experiences, and feelings as a Palestinian. I did… but it all came out -for some strange reason- sounding -as I am told- like poetry! So I self published two books (I Believe in Miracles, and Palestine, The True Story. [ALOCHONA] Rise of the Channel-1 raised many eyebrows

Channel 1 came late in a procession of private television stations that obtained licenses during the last BNP rule, but made a stir in the screen partly because of its state-of-the-art equipment and also because of its political clouts.

Giasuddin Al Mamun, better known for his controversial business partnership with the then premier's son Tarique Rahman, launched the satellite channel on January 24, 2006 as its managing director with a few other known BNP leaders and adherents to its board.

TV viewers found it an interesting time for Channel 1 to hit the market when Mamun's clout in the then ruling coalition centring the so-called alternate powerhouse Hawa Bhaban had already earned him enough bad name.

Many eyebrows then raised as this TV station, still in toddling stage, ran apparently very bold reports against land grabbing by a sitting minister, public outcry for power outage in Kansat and enrolment of fictitious names in voters' list.

But future was destined otherwise for Channel 1. Too many people took interest in the affairs of this channel once the law enforcers put Mamun behind the bar on numerous charges.

The entire regime of the military-aided caretaker government saw people entering and departing in failed bids to put a stake on the then promising TV station.

After Mamun's arrest, its chairman, an ex-lawmaker of BNP tried to take command but got caught on graft charges later. Then one of the directors came to the scene amidst the increasing impatience of a private commercial bank over non-repayment of outstanding dues against the big chunk of loans sanctioned for the channel.

Many brilliant professionals later left the TV channel amidst cash crunch and fading professionalism, putting its slide down further in TRP (target rating point)

In recent months tension brewed, said insiders, on the question of whether to keep the channel's ownership under the board that was once helmed by Mamun or gradually transfer the ownership to its present operators.

Transmission of Channel 1 was suspended yesterday evening after Post and Telecommunications Minister Rajiuddin Ahmed Raju said the government had decided to shut the channel.

[ALOCHONA] Kissinger's involvement in 15 August 1975

Kissinger's involvement in 15 August 1975

Zoglul Husain
zoglul@hotmail.co.uk

It was Kissinger who organised the 15 August 1975 coup. Please see the following Daily Star report of 15 August 2005 as follows:

http://www.thedailystar.net/2005/08/15/d5081501033.htm

According to the above report, veteran US journalist Lawrence Lifschultz, through recent admissions of the then (1975) US ambassador to Bangladesh, Eugene Boster, asserted that Kissinger was involved in the 15 August 1975 coup. Prior to Lifschultz, another US writer Christopher Hitchens referred to Kissinger's involvement in the coup

Re: [ALOCHONA] Picture of killing

Mr. Ramjan,

You have provided some misleading information with this photograph here. I don't know whether it is intentional or due to lack of knowledge.

a. They were not Biharies
b. There were no Bengalies left around to see those killings between 25th March 1971 to 15th/16th December 1971...only some Razakar, Al-Badar, Al-Shams or collaborators of Pakistan Army.

Anyone have more information? I can correct myself if needed. Thanks

Talut

Dear Hakka Hua Alamgir

Also this stuff is very old from December 24. Why are you recycling stuff from months ago. Dont you have something new and fresh to start.

Friends

Pakistan is hated name in the history of Bangladesh so as the HINDU  STAAAN, Good relation with Pakistan but why ? How  the Pakistanis demand to be friends on what criteria ???????

Now, we Bangladeshis are fighting a psychological war against the bestial HINDUs of HINDU STAAAN. But it is taking time since there are lot more quislings( GADDARES) than the Pakis had during 1971. So, it will take time to wipe out HINDU STAANI gaddars from the holy soil of Bangladesh n free us as a real independent, sovereign n dignified nation.

To me since we have nothing to do with Pakistan other then get back share of our wealth that had been stolen by the them for over 25 years since 1947 n take back the stranded Pakis . When they will clear the debt n surrender with unconditional apology for the genocide in 1971 we may consider to have improved relation with Paki otherwise sorry NO !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I was surprised to see Mr. Faaruque Alamgir replying to Jumshed and maligning Pakistan.

He is a non Muslim, Jewish agent planted in this forum to create rift and differences between Bangladesh and Pakistan. He apparently speaks for Pakistan, but in actual fact he wants to incite feelings of Bangladeshis against Pakistan. Same job is being done by NK Datta and Satish Kumar, paid workers of Indian security agencies who write from Bangladeshi point of view and criticize Pakistan.

Whatever happened has happened. We can not change it. But at least we can make the future better by ignoring incitement by Indian agents. India is a bully in the block and knows well that if Bangladesh and Pakistan take a united stand on any matter, it would not be easy for her to ignore. And just to preclude this possibility, they are planting hate mongers among us.

For God's sake ! Wake up. How long we would be continued to be fooled by Indian pigs.

Re: [ALOCHONA] Re: Sycophancy - Bangla Eshtyle. Words Eminent & Brilliant

Friends

How come "Frince Jhoy" is Bangladeshi ? Does he has any back-log in Bangladesh ? No absolutely no . If any paa chata dalal or Kutta jibi argues that his mother is there in Bangladesh so the Frince has som onus back here ????????????

No, freinds no, Hasi apu is shrudely clever to get two off shoots married in a safer distance where the thugs/criminals/rapists/arsonist/looters/grabbers/lady Pimps that  she has created n harbouring cannot touch the "Frince JHoy n Frinces Doll" n they live safely with the total allegiance of a foreign country.

Frince Jhoy knowing his risks n possibilities has worked out a mode to squeeze as much as possible money exploiting his mothers power n connivance n built huge empire(already on the way as reported by different media with facts n figures) n throw Bangladesh in oblivion like the "Amer Ati" n claim no responsibilty. In this respect the Moha Chore, Tareq (as attributed by Hasia Apu n her psycophant media/kutta jibis) is just a simple duffer. As reported or foundout that the duffer had amassed billions(????)  with his connivers but did not leave the country so he paid the price of being "Stupid".

Friends, the majority people of Bangladesh do surely want that all the criminals either spouse/sons/daughters/cousins/party hoodlooms/rapist/eve teasers/bureaucrats irrespectinve of any party be put on the docket of Justice n if found guilty be punsied severely as detterent.

Will this happen now or tomorrow or any time at all ????????????????????????

Dear Alochoks

There's no reason to be fair to Joy. He should know better about a lot of things - but he doesn't.

- He should know better than to act as the defacto representative of Bangladesh in the US.

- He should know better than to take an appointment as an official Advisor to the government

- He should know better than to try to negotiate a truce between warring factions of Chatra League without seeking the punishment of murderers and extortionists

- He should know better than to attend intra government level meetings

- He should know better than to encourage sycophancy, dynastic politics and the cult of personality

- He should know better than to remain silent on undemocratic practices within his own party

- He should know better than to take advantage of people who revere him simply because he belongs to a certain family.

Blah, blah, blah....

Joy, without doubt, welcomes the sycophancy involved in being described as 'eminent computer scientist'. Its is probable that he drafted or approved the term himself. And why not?

WHAT OTHER BASIS IS THERE FOR HIM TO GIVE THAT SPEECH IN THE FIRST PLACE?

Other than carefully introducing to him the electorate with a view of giving him the crown?

Joy's real power to help Bangladesh is palpable - for it is a power that has been conferred on him irrespective of what he wants and only because of who he is. But his real power to help Bangladesh is to fight for real change in the way we do things.

Unfortunately, he's not doing that. He's benefitting from and directly supporting the same crappy politics that have blighted us from birth.

You see - he needs the existing political infrastructure, with all its evils and failures, as much as his mother does.

There is no reason to be fair to anyone who exploits, perpetuates and benefits from the status quo of Bangladeshi politics.

Joy suffers from a common disease. He probably is a Democrat and would not tolerate extortion by the younger members of the Democratic Party. But extortion by his own AL in Bangladesh - well, thats "understandable"!

So much for a Masters degree in Public Administration!

[ALOCHONA] Bad habits can age you by 12 years

Bad habits can age you by 12 years, study suggests

CHICAGO - Four common bad habits combined — smoking, drinking too much, inactivity and poor diet — can age you by 12 years, sobering new research suggests.

The findings are from a study that tracked nearly 5,000 British adults for 20 years, and they highlight yet another reason to adopt a healthier lifestyle.

Overall, 314 people studied had all four unhealthy behaviors. Among them, 91 died during the study, or 29 percent. Among the 387 healthiest people with none of the four habits, only 32 died, or about 8 percent.

The risky behaviors were: smoking tobacco; downing more than three alcoholic drinks per day for men and more than two daily for women; getting less than two hours of physical activity per week; and eating fruits and vegetables fewer than three times daily.

These habits combined substantially increased the risk of death and made people who engaged in them seem 12 years older than people in the healthiest group, said lead researcher Elisabeth Kvaavik of the University of Oslo.

The study appears in Monday's Archives of Internal Medicine.

The healthiest group included never-smokers and those who had quit; teetotalers, women who had fewer than two drinks daily and men who had fewer than three; those who got at least two hours of physical activity weekly; and those who ate fruits and vegetables at least three times daily.

"You don't need to be extreme" to be in the healthy category, Kvaavik said. "These behaviors add up, so together it's quite good. It should be possible for most people to manage to do it."

For example, one carrot, one apple and a glass of orange juice would suffice for the fruit and vegetable cutoffs in the study, Kvaavik said, noting that the amounts are pretty modest and less strict than many guidelines.

The U.S. government generally recommends at least 4 cups of fruits or vegetables daily for adults, depending on age and activity level; and about 2 1/2 hours of exercise weekly.

Study participants were 4,886 British adults aged 18 and older, or 44 years old on average. They were randomly selected from participants in a separate nationwide British health survey. Study subjects were asked about various lifestyle habits only once, a potential limitation, but Kvaavik said those habits tend to be fairly stable in adulthood.

Death certificates were checked for the next 20 years. The most common causes of death included heart disease and cancer, both related to unhealthy lifestyles.

Kvaavik said her results are applicable to other westernized nations including the United States.

June Stevens, a University of North Carolina public health researcher, said the results are in line with previous studies that examined the combined effects of health-related habits on longevity.

The findings don't mean that everyone who maintains a healthy lifestyle will live longer than those who don't, but it will increase the odds, Stevens said.

Prime minister Sheikh Hasina has asked commerce minister Faruque Khan not to give any instruction to the authorities concerned for the import of Indian motion films with a view to protecting the local film Industry. The prime minister's instruction came from the regular weekly meeting of the cabinet held at the Secretariat with Sheikh Hasina in the chair.

Disclosing the prime minister's instruction in this regard to The Independent, a member of the cabinet quoted Sheikh Hasina as instructing the commerce minister: "It (import of Indian movies) would not be good for the country's young film industry at this hour."

In this context, the source quoted the prime minister as saying that the post-liberation government of the Father of the Nation, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, imposed a ban on the import of Indian movies (Bangla, Hindi and other languages) in 1972 to give protection to the budding film industry of the new-born nation.

At the cabinet meeting, two of the ministers opposed the import of Indian movies saying that they would have an adverse impact on the culture of the country and for this reason, the ban imposed by the Bangabandhu government should be retained this would check probable Indian cultural domination of the country through movies.

As soon as the news relating to the government's probable green signal for the import of Indian movies was published in the national dailies, all the associations of directors, actors, actresses and technicians burst into vehement protests on the premises of the Film Development Corporation and other places in the city.

They threatened to launch a tough movement if the government took such a 'harmful decision' against the country's film industry.Talking to this correspondent, popular film director PA Kajal hailed the prime minister's instruction to the commerce minister in this regard."On behalf of the film directors, artistes and technicians, we express our gratitude to the prime minister for her timely decision and bold role in safeguarding the country's film industry from ruination," he said.

Referring to the import of Indian movies into Nepal and Pakistan, PA Kajal said that film industries in both the South-Asian countries were on the verge of ruination following the decision of their governments.Expressing his gratitude to the prime minister, PA Kajal, who directed hit movies like "Ek Takar Bou" and "Baro Loker Jamai", said, "Following the footsteps of her illustrious father Bangabandhu, our prime minister Sheikh Hasina has also taken a right decision to save the country's film industry from collapse."

[ALOCHONA] The present situation in Bangladesh

The present situation in Bangladesh

By Mohammad Zainal Abedin

Bangladesh passes through crucial situation. People of all walks of life are apprehensive of the future of the country. Bangladesh never experiences such uncertainty in her history. The mischievous villains of 1/11, sensing mass uprising and feeling isolation in home and abroad slipped away by holding a planted election and empowering the India-blessed people of their choice. The present regime, through fake and baseless cases, tries to crash the opposition voices in one hand and implement the hegemonic design of India on the other.

As a result, the Army, the symbol of our independence and sovereignty, was the first victim to be crushed so that no obstruction comes from the Army when the sovereignty and independence is minimized by providing undesirable concessions to India. 57 talented Army officials were gunned down at Peelkhana. Later over hundred Army officers, without any logical reason, were sent forced to early retirement. On the other hand, thousands of BDR jawans were arrested. About 70 BDR jawans died either in custody or in their work place. Knowledgeable sources claim, those jawans were simply annihilated from the world to bury once for all Indian involvement and the involvement of the present regime as they were the witness how India and its local agents committed this plated murder at Peelkhana. BDR reduced to worse than police, who lost their spirit and vigor and mental and psychological strength. Now India have an open border with Bangladesh like that of Bhutan what India longed for since the independence of Bangladesh.

India now dictates our foreign, even internal, polices. India tries to throw Bangladesh to such a situation so that it gradually shouldn̢۪t have diplomatic relation with any other country, except India. Bangladesh̢۪s foreign relation and international trade, should be performed through India what Bhutan does now. India has already isolated Bangladesh from the Muslim world and the process of isolation continues further. India designs to create such a situation that Bangladesh should have a flag and government of its choice that will rule the country on New Delhi̢۪s behalf. Indian currency and security agents will enter Bangladesh uninterruptedly. Indian secret service and intelligence operatives, even secret killers, have already thronged in Bangladesh. Indian policymakers openly declared that Bangladesh will not be allowed to get out of Indian radar. Indian ex-foreign minister Pronab Mukharji openly declared it would not sit idle if Sheikh Hasina is disturbed.

On the other hand, the government intentionally creates chaotic situation inside the country. Instead of serving the nation and removing the various types of irritant problems, including shortage of gas, water, electricity, the government is indulged in crushing the opposition leaders and activists. It lodges new fakes cases against them, but withdrew over 4,112 cases lodged against AL leaders during the caretaker government, what Sheikh Hasina declared as the outcome of their movement. Government engaged its efforts to erase the image of Shahid President Ziaur Rahman.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has seemingly waged a war against the opposition parties in Bangladesh. Her personal vendetta went so far that recently, by a decree of her cabinet, she ordered that the three times elected Prime Minister and the leader of the largest opposition party Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), Khaleda Zia be forcibly evicted from her residence that was lawfully allotted to her by the government following the assassination of her husband and then President Ziaur Rahman in 1981. Recently, at the estimated cost of BD Taka 14 billion (more than 200 million US Dollar) the AL government changed the name of country’s main international airport that was named after BNP founder Ziaur Rahman for the past 27 years (Daily New Nation, February 24, 2010), and the Prime Minister boasted in a public statement that she had done it â€Å“to give BNP a lesson” (The Daily Star, February 21, 2010). She even uttered some disgraceful and indecent utterance saying an empty box was buried at the place which is now regarded as the grave late Ziaur Rahman. Her party leaders even in the Parliament claimed that the grave of Zia should be shifted to other place from its present site. Some of them even made a defamatory claim that Zia’s corpse was thrown into Bay of Bengal. It was surfaced in the media that the government has a clandestine plan to bulldogger the mazar of late President Ziaur Rahman.

Journalists, political and cultural activities that oppose the misrule and anti-nation policies of the government are subjected to intimidation and subjugation. Murder, secret killing, intimidation, insecurity, robbery, extrajudicial killing, rape, human rights violation, price hike, unrest, etc., made the life unsecured and intolerable. The documents that USA State Department released on the human rights situation in Bangladesh are enough to comprehend the real position in Bangladesh. The pro-government elements, belonging to Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL), Awami Jubo League (AJL) and other bodies, engaging themselves in extortion, tender and admission business, illegal occupation, created reign of terror in the country whose poor victims are the students of renowned educational institutions of Bangladesh.

It would require volumes and years of researches to document the atrocities and repressions of the government that they had committed in different sectors of Bangladesh. Considering the constraints of time and space let us have a brief look at some microscopic topics, which are really insignificant in nature. It is to be mentioned, all the notorious activities of AL leaders and activists and all other front organizations, particularly BCL, are neither recorded in the police station nor reported in the press. In most cases the victims do not dare to sue case against ruling party activists for fear of life. On the other hand police, to please the ruling party and avert transfer or unknown types of problems, generally avoid recording maximum number of crimes. They only record those crimes that are impossible to avoid.

The government harasses the opposition leaders and activists, even the journalists who do not tune to government line. 30 cases were lodges against Mahmudur Rahman, the editor of ‘Amar Desh’ a Bengali daily, while five cases were lodged against Swaokat Mahmud, the current President of the National Press Club of Dhaka. 19 cases were filed against Joynal Abedin Faroque, the Chief Whip of the Opposition Bench in the Parliament. (Daily Amar Desh, April 9, 2010)

On the eve of by-election in Bhola-4, AL activists beat and stabbed at Nazim Uddin Alam the former Lawmaker and the Election coordinator of BNP candidate Maj. Hafizuddin. The AL cadres attacked a pro-BNP motorcade and ransacked 12 micro and private cars. Local people brought the injured people to Lalmohon Upazila Hospital, where eight of them were admitted. The Awami League workers also reportedly attacked Lalmohon Correspondent of the daily Dinkal Shahidul Islam. They snatched his camera when he tried to take snaps of those injured of the incident in the hospital and snatched away his camera.

The police on March 17 arrested 57 students of Dhaka College in an overnight raid on its seven hostels and adjoining areas after clashes between rival activists of the Bangladesh Chhatra League over stronghold in a hostel. The police also seized 52 bullets, five machetes, 10 iron rods, a large number of wood sticks and Tk 32,100 in cash from the hostels of the college during the raid, additional deputy commissioner (media and community service) of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police Walid Hossain. (The New Age, March 18, 2010).

Rajshahi University unit BCL cadres on 7 April (2010) night beat up its proctor and his two assistants, a hall provost and two house tutors while police raided Shaheed Samsuzzoha Hall. BCL cadres also vandalised the proctor office and an office room and the guest room of the hall.

Resident students of the hall said police along with the help of hall authorities and the proctorial body raided the hall around 11.30 pm on 7 April night to pick up illegal residents.Hearing the news of raid, BCL workers led by its president Awal Kabir Joy rushed to the hall. Joy asked hall provost Dr Mortuza Khaled as to why they conducted the raid without his permission. Meanwhile, Provost Council, an association of provosts from sixteen halls, at a meeting 8 April announced their work abstention for 10 April and demanded punishment to the attackers.

Sky-high allegations against the activists of AL, BCL, Awami Jubo League (AJL) is being piled up daily. The Daily Amar Desh editorially (March 23, 2010) said, on an average 400 allegations including kidnapping, murder, rape, extortion, illegal occupation of land and houses or shops, drug-trafficking, illegal business through tender and admission in educational institutions are reported against activists of these organizations.

The atrocities of AL went to such an unbearable zenith that a genuine pro-AL daily had to editorially make some, bitter, but real comments. It said, â€Å“What haven't they (BCL activists) done in the last 15 months? Seats at the university dorms have been turned into their private preserve; tenders are manipulated; and, to cap it all, they are committing all other types of offences with complete impunity. Obviously, the list will be further lengthened if we consider the BCL's internecine feuds that often lead to bloodletting. Again, killing each other does not make their activities less repugnant to the academic atmosphere.”

The daily added, â€Å“The sudden and violent outbursts of BCL rowdism are often triggered by the authorities' failing to meet their unlawful demands. In the latest instance, the VC of Chittagong University had reportedly turned down their proposal of setting up some stalls on the campus on Pahela Baishakh to do business. Infuriated by the VC's decision, they started a movement to oust him! Now, the question is who should run the university? The BCL goons or the VC? Or indeed do the education ministry, the government or the ruling party feel any pinch of responsibility?”

â€Å“One cannot but keep on asking who is actually responsible, apart from the BCL activists, for the situation now prevailing in the academic arena? The ruling AL's stand is manifestly not to go beyond issuing sermonic statements. Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's exhortations and warnings have produced no results; on the contrary, these have only helped increase the sense of impunity. The BCL could overlook what is being said from the top and continues, rather blissfully, to indulge in criminal activities.”

Pointing to the indulgence of the government to the audacious and unlawful desperate activities of BCL cadres the daily in conclusion opined, â€Å“It is clear that the government is totally oblivious of the BCL's nefarious activities which now include a crime like arson. The law enforcers are doing nothing, or apparently not asked to do anything, to curb the illegal activities. Such activities have already started wreaking havoc on the government's credibility and effectiveness. It is not an overstatement to say that when the ruling party fails to control its cadres, particularly those involved in crime, a general surge in the crime situation is likely to follow. And the result can be free-for-all criminalisation of society with the government pushed to a point of looking on helplessly. What a disaster that will be! But it is our firm belief that if the government and ruling party are serious and determined to contain BCL's predatory activities, they surely can(http://www.thedailystar.net/story.php?nid=135276).

Indicating to the uncontrolled crimes of the BCL activists, Obedul Kader a close ally to India and Shekih Hasina alleged that AL leaders of different strata of the party fuel the unbridled activists and leaders. Kader, a member of AL presidium, however, refrained from naming those leaders who guide the BCL from behind the screen. (The Daily Kaler Kontha, March 21, 2010.) BCL activists and leaders are seen engaged in internal clash and dispute, murder, admission business, tender business, extortion, rape and all other controversial activities that undermine the images of the government and aggravates the misery of the common people.

Pro-India diplomacy

The relation of Bangladesh with the Muslim countries, the traditional and trusted friends of Bangladesh, where more than 70 percent of the immigrant Bangladeshis work, declines sharply due to the imprudent and suicidal foreign policy of Bangladesh. The international community, particularly the Muslim world disgustingly monitors the India-centered foreign policy of incumbent AL government of Bangladesh. As a results, country's manpower export progressively declines, causing huge loss to remittances.

To please India, government virtually disconnects Bangladesh from the rest of the world. Though the foreign minister and the prime minister, with large followers frequently make expensive tours to abroad, they virtually yield no benefits for the country; rather incur huge foreign currency. Government allowed India to use our seaports, but denies to provide the same to USA. Americans for a long time tried to build more effective and closer relations with Bangladesh, but due to Indian pressure AL frustrates all the efforts of America.

Japan is the No. one donor country that enormously assists Bangladesh in several fields. But whenever AL assumes power our relation with Japan becomes cold. During her first term, Sheikh Hasina government sided with India and voted in favour of India to help it to get Non-permanent membership from Asia in the UN Security Council. This soured our relation with Japan. The BNP-led Khaleda Zia government mended the relation with Japan. Sheikh Hasina government in her present term again alienated from the government policy of having closer relations with Japan. This time her government has already declared that Bangladesh supports Indian demand of getting permanent membership in the UN Security Council. As both Japan and India are the aspirants of becoming permanent members of UN Security Council and only one membership from Asian countries may be given if the number of the permanent members is increased.

The advance declaration of supporting India in the race was a suicidal policy and shift of our foreign policy. But the government did it to get Indian blessings. Her government also turned down several investment proposals of Japan for exclusive EPZ in Chittagong, though it was given to South Korea. India apprehends Japanese investment in single EPZ will jeopardize Indian interest. If Japan invests in automobile sector India will lose huge market in Bangladesh, as Bangladesh will stop buying low-quality Indian vehicles, which now hugely used here.

Though Sheikh Mujib government established diplomatic relation with Pakistan, and urged the Bangladeshis to forget the bitter past, Sheikh Hasina government always keeps distance with Pakistan. India finances to nurse anti-Pakistan sentiment in Bangladesh, as India apprehends warm relation between Bangladesh and Pakistan will jeopardize India̢۪s geo-strategic-economic interest. On the other hand, by doing so India cunningly conceals its anti-Bangladesh hegemonic and exploitative policies and activities.

The government unfortunately made our relation sours with Saudi Arabia, the religious leader of the Muslim country where about 2.2 Bangladeshis work. Both Saudi Arab and Pakistan were alleged, even by the ministers that these two countries endeavour to frustrate the trial of the Pakistani collaborators who now belong to Jamat-e-Islami. Pakistan instantly declared that it supports the trail of the collaborators. A minister even went on saying that if Saudi Arabia deports all the Bangladeshi workers that will not be able to prevent the government from trying the collaborators whom the government branded as war criminals. Though Saudi Arabian Embassy protested the allegation that BNP uses Saudi Arabia to undo the trial, but such provocative allegation is non-diplomatic that not only distances Bangladesh from the Muslim world, but also will seriously cause Bangladesh.

During the first quarter of this calendar a total of 99,140 Bangladeshis could manage job abroad which is 27.9 per cent less than the corresponding period of previous year.Bangladesh loses its largest manpower market in the Middle East. Out of seven million Bangladeshi immigrant workers four millions work in the Middle East. Among them 20 lakh (two millions) are in Saudi Arabia, 14 lakh (1.4 millions) in United Arab Emirates, 2 lakh and 50 thousand (0.2.5 million) in Oman and Kuwait each, one lakh and 50 thousands (0.1.14 millions) in Bahrain, and one lakh and 24 thousands (.1.24 million) in Qatar.

After the AL-led government assumed power, export of the Bangladeshi workers to the Middle East not only reduces daily, rather many workers are returning to the country losing their jobs. During the first 15 moths of the current government only 16 thousand and 921 Bangladeshi workers went to Saudi Arabia, but it sent back 31 thousand and 306 workers to Bangladesh during the same period. Only 21 workers went to Kuwait during this time, though on an average 30 thousands to 40 thousands Bangladeshis used to go this country every year. (Prothom Alo, 17 April, 2010). Malaysia recruited only 44 workers during the period which is the third biggest employer of Bangladeshi workers after Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates (UAE). On the other hand, Qatar employed less than 1000 Bangladeshi workers.

Informed sources said Malaysia is now recruiting manpower from Nepal after slapping a ban on recruitment from Bangladesh following a diplomatic hitch last year. A recruiting agent said Malaysia has planned to recruit some 100,000 workers from Nepal. In this way Bangladesh loses its traditional market of manpower export.*

Crime against the women

To get the sympathy of the western countries, AL proves itself as the vocal champion of the empowerment of the women. It was strongly believed that Sheikh Hasina and her followers took lesson from the defeat in the election of 2005 and they would not commit same misdeeds that curtailed their acceptability and popularity. For this reason, people, particularly the woman community, voted them massively. But the reality is totally different. The reality is that basic rights of the women and their chastity were severely violated by the leaders and the activities belonging to AL or its front organizations, particularly Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) Awami Jubo League (AJL). They are seemed to be more desperate than their previous term. Now men and women are more vigorously persecuted during the 2nd term of the Sheikh Hasina government.

According to press reports, BCL activists in many universities and institutions have notoriously established torture cells and rape houses. In many cases, they record the violent rape scenes, make CDs and sell them in local video shops (Daily Star, September 28 and September 29, 2009). It is worth mentioning that last time when AL was in power (1996-2001), in 1998 one notorious cadre of BCL named Jasimuddin Manik openly celebrated his â€Å“rape century” as he completed raping 100 girls at Jahangirnagar University drawing huge media coverage! (Daily Manobjomin, August 17, 1998; The Daily Star, September 26, 1998; Star Weekend Magazine, 7(31), August 1, 2007). Though serious resentment and curse roared the country at that time, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina government remained mum and the criminal did not face any exemplary punishment.

A female Bangladeshi female researcher, Rahnuma Ahmed, documented the tragic and massive incidents of rapes committed during this regime. She wrote, Ahsan Kabir Mamun, also known as Mamun Howladar, information secretary of Pirojpur district committee of the BCL, raped a class X student in Pirojpur, Barisal. September 2009. The incident was recorded on cell phone by his childhood friend ‘Ganja’ Monir, who happens to be a BNP activist. It was later available as a pornographic CD for sale in local video shops. Mamun insists it was recorded ‘secretly’, while Monir says he was carrying out Mamun’s instructions. Mamun did not deny having raped the girl, but added, the recording (not committing the crime itself, mind you) had been done to ‘tarnish’ his political and business image. The two families, he said, were closely related. He was to be married to her soon. Her family responded by demanding that he should receive ‘exemplary punishment’.

A group of 16 young men, in September 2009, abducted a class VII student of Pakhimara in Kalapara upazila in Patuakhali. The young girl was returning home from a Puja mandap accompanied by her cousin Nasir, whom the men beat up and drove away. They took her to a nearby garden. According to media reports, she was gang-raped, allegedly by ten of her abductors. All BCL activists. More recently, in February 2010, four students of Chittagong Medical College, all BCL leaders and activists, allegedly raped a girl on a hill adjoining the CMC campus.

A similar incident had occurred several months earlier, on the same campus, when another BCL activist, accompanied by his associates, assaulted a woman student and her companion. On February 21, BCL activists beat up a young girl and her friends who were returning from the central Shaheed Minar, in front of the Dhaka University vice-chancellor̢۪s residence. A BCL activist of Jasimuddin Hall approached the young girl, and began harassing her. Her companions and passersby came to her aid but other BCL activists, from nearby halls, joined in the attack. Five people were injured. This month, in April, students of statistics department of Jagannath University refused to attend classes until a BCL activist, who had reportedly assaulted a woman student belonging to their department, was punished.

Violence, extortion, tenderbaji, sexual offences are mentioned, neither by the prime minister, nor by any high (let alone, low) ranking AL member. In the case of Pakhimara, where the gang-rape occurred, local-level AL leaders fined the 16 young men 10,000 taka each for having ‘tortured’ the girl. Their offence was characterised as ‘intent to rape’. Not gang-rape, no. The victim’s family was forced to declare this at a hurriedly called press conference. Forced to file a defamation case against the publisher, editor and reporter of a Bangla daily for having reported the rape as rape. AL leaders pressurised the editor of a local daily to sack his reporter for having reported the rape. The culprits were not arrested. The victim’s family fled in fear of reprisal. The allegation of gang-rape had been manufactured to taint the ruling party’s image, said Rakibul Ahsan, Kalapara upazila AL secretary.

In Dhaka University, although BCL activists who caused assault and injury on February 21 have been suspended, they are still staying in the residential halls. Two have been given executive positions in the newly-formed BCL hall unit.A ruling which was heartily welcomed by women̢۪s organizations in Bangladesh. Any kind of physical, mental or sexual harassment of women, girls and children at their workplaces, educational institutions and at other public places, including roads, is a criminal offence punishable by fine and/or imprisonment. The ruling has the status of law. (The ruling of the High Court remains unimplemented. Neither the government, nor the law enforcing agencies, nor the feminist bodies or human rights organizations did anything to punish those who actually violated the High Court Ruling ).

A horrible report of sex scandal of the Eden Girls̢۪ College BCL leaders and students stirred the nation. sAccording to newspaper reports, factions opposed to BCL unit president Jasmine Shamima Nijhum and general secretary Farzana Yasmin Tania have alleged that, besides admission profiteering, these women leaders are involved in tenderbaji, wheeling and dealing, buying up BTV slots, and lobbying. They use first year students, those from village backgrounds, telling them that this is the way to fulfill their dreams of becoming leaders, and becoming wealthy. The girls are encouraged to dress up. They are taken to the houses of different leaders. Sometimes to hotels. And asked to entertain them. According to the allegations, the BCL leaders leave the hostel after 10 at night. Returning the next day, at 10 in the morning. Women students who refuse to do as told are either turned out of the hostel, or their room is broken into, or locked up. The principal of the college, according to news reports, is fully complicit in these happenings(http://www.newagebd.com/2010/apr/19/edit.html).

A number of female students and junior BCL activists alleged that female students were sent not only to the residents of the BCL and AJL leaders, including the ministers, but also to the houses of various businessmen and industrialists residing in Azimpur, Hazaribag, New Market and Dhanmandi and the residential hotels of Kakrail, Gulishtan, Elephant Road, Malibag, Matijheel, Mohammadpur, and Mirpur. The hell of repression imposed on them if they ever declined to go to the prescribed persons.

Some days back, identical allegation was surfaced against the leaders of the Badrunnessa Women̢۪s College as well. Two groups engaged in tussels over the same issue of sex business. The leaders of Badrunnessa Women̢۪s College also used to force the girls to go to hotels or residential houses to sell their sex. In some cases female girls were branded as the activists of Shibir (student front of Jammat-e-Islami) and were beaten and driven out of the college hostel.

These incidents and statements of the female students simply manifest the real character of the BCL, AJL, AL leaders and the ministers of the government.

Amar Desh informed, BCL, the student front of the ruling AL created a record of harassing the young girls this year in the program of welcoming the Bengali New Year in DU. Due to the clash that originated out of the dispute of sharing the money of the concert, over 50 women became the victims of harassment in DU campus. Police, however, admitted that 20 young girls were assaulted. A female performer at the concert and a teachers Sir F. Rahman Hall were assaulted by the undisciplined leaders of BCL. The undisciplined miscreants undressed a young girl, the eyewitnesses informed. ADC of Raman Police Station informed that police rescued 15 young girls from the areas adjoining the concert and took them safe shelter. But police did not get any written allegation. On the other hand, the victims alleged that the incidents occurred in the very presence of the police and they were the silent spectators of the incidents.

Quoting the eyewitness, men of intelligence agencies, Dhaka University (DU) administration and police sources, the Bengali daily ‘Amar Desh’ (April 16, 2010) said, just within minutes after the sunset, 15 young girls were harassed and assaulted in the front and the rear gates of TSC (Teacher’s-Student’s Centre) of DU and at the entrance of Suhrawardy Uddan adjoining the TSC. Some of them were the students of DU while others were outsiders. Some tender-aged youths at about 8PM jumped on four girls at the entrance of the Suhrawardy Uddan just on the eastern side of the TSC. The miscreants tore the kamiz (garment for the upper part of the body, long and loose shirt) of the girls, snatched away their ‘orna’ (modesty scarf of the women to cover their chest) and grabbed a girl. To save her the girl cried out saying help! help! At this stage two young youths putting off their shirts saved the modesty of the girl. Five female students became the victims of harassment at the front gate of TSC. On having heard it police rushed there and rescued one of them. The remaining four entering TSC save their dignity. Two female student of DU took shelter inside the office of DU Journalist Association. An unknown female student, who lost her sense due to violation, was recovered at about 8.45 Pm from in front of Udayan Shcool of Dhaka. (Weekly Ajkal, New York, April 16, 2010). The same weekly reported that the miscreants at Surahwardy Uddayan touched the body of a girl dressed with a sari.

A Dhaka University-based cultural body named ‘Muktaban Sahittaya Sangskriti Sangsad’ (Muktaban Literary & Cultural Society) sponsored the concert. Its Chief Abdur Rahman is the President of BCL branch of Kobi Jashimuddin Hall of DU.*

Slogan of change, changes their fate

The government came to power using many lucrative slogans. Two of them were digital Bangladesh and the other was to change the day. All the slogans were very fascinating in nature and the people overwhelmingly voted AL to power. But the slogans now seem to be mere slogan. They are far from implementation. Though the common people of Bangladesh suffer from poverty, malnutrition, various types of socio-economic problems, government without paying heed to redress those opt to increase the salary and other financial benefits for Presidents to others.

According to the new pay-hike the president̢۪s monthly remuneration will now be increased to Tk 61,200 from Tk 33,400, the prime minister̢۪s to Tk 58,600 from Tk 32,000, a minister̢۪s to Tk 53,100 from Tk 29,000, a state minister̢۪s to Tk 47,800 from Tk 26,100 and a deputy minister̢۪s to Tk 45,150 from Tk 24,650, according to the proposed pay scale.

The speaker̢۪s monthly salary will now be raised to Tk 57,200 from Tk 31,000, the deputy speaker̢۪s to Tk 53,100 from Tk 29,000 and the other MPs̢۪ to Tk 27,500 from Tk 15,000. Each MP will also get Tk 40,000 per month for maintenance of his car along with other allowances and benefits. The new pay scale will raise the remuneration of the chief justice to Tk 56,000 from Tk 30,500, of the Appellate Division judges to Tk 53,100 from Tk 29,000 and of the High Court Division judges to Tk 47,000 from Tk 27,000.

Critics alleged, the government attracted the voters under the lucrative slogans of change the day, with a promise of providing per kg of rice with Tk. 10, a job for every family, removing power crisis, extortion, terrorism, from the society, but utterly failed to do any one of them. But the fate of those who are related to government machineries was at least changed. Many people live from hand to mouth, die untreated, and uncared. Price-hike, political repression, extortion, intimidation, illegal occupation, murder, rape, etc. make their life miserable daily. There is no security of life. They can do nothing without bribe and extortion. Non-availability of power, water and gas, traffic jam, robbery, hijacking, etc. poisoned the urban life.

Once a party activist is voted to become an MP, his luck smiles instantly. The opportunists flock around him and he used them to grab money from different sources, what he gets as ‘bokshis/gifts/’ but actually those are only bribes. On the other hand an MP gets new luxurious car, an apartment, housing plot etc. Sources and suffers informed, the MPs and ministers other than their legal income, have hundreds of opportunities to make illegal assets through clandestine process. Government surely changes the days of the party cadres, but the people remain in dark for generation to generation. None knows when this treachery will end?*

Uni-party administration

The ruling party in order to turn Bangladesh to a uni-party State designs to crush the opposition parties and bring all the key government installations, facilities, jobs, and assets under the control of AL leaders, activists and workers. As a result, the multi-party character of the country rapidly diminishes. It seems the Awami League-led grand coalition government works to make the nation a monolithic state by marginalising the opposition and bringing all state-owned facilities under the control of its party activists. As a result of it the country's democratic pluralism is rapidly losing ground. Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on March 6 (2010) launched the national service at Kurigram under which the government is planning to create 7.20 lakh jobs throughout the country to bring employment to jobless youths.

Meanwhile, the Prime Minister's Office has created a database of several lakh mid-level qualified party activists of and asked the local government and rural establishments to provide them jobs. As a result, huge number of qualified youths will remain jobless who will be victims of severe discrimination, joblessness and disappointment.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina last month launched an agricultural credit programme in the Sherpur district distributing special cards to them. With the card, farmers can open bank account at low cost and withdraw agricultural loans easily. They can also get seeds, fertilizers and diesel for irrigation at concessional rates using the card and critics say the scheme is being used either to cover farmers recommended by local party leaders or make farmers party supporters with this especial favour of the government.

In February 2010, the industry ministry approved appointment of five thousand distributors throughout the country and they were strictly selected on recommendation of local party committees.Dilip Barua claimed, in doing so the government has also retained the dealers appointed by the former BNP-Jamat government. None of them lost their dealership. But the real truth is that the industry ministry distributed especial withdrawal card to newly appointed dealers and its showing is mandatory to receive fertilizer for marketing at farmers' level.

As the former dealers have not got such cards, they will not be able to get the supply locally, the sources said suggesting the cunning way of depriving the people who were in the business from the time of the previous government.

Government has also removed or in the process of removing several hundred teachers of the mosque-based informal education system engaged by the previous government. The allegation is that most of them are supporters of the Jamaat-e-Islami and they should not be allowed to function. The idea is that these people have no right to be in government-funded job as activist or supporter of a religion-based political party.

The government on the other hand has prepared list of people in the public service, educational institutions, hospitals and such other facilities and working to remove them, or many of them have already been removed on political ground.

The government is also moving with a plan to recruit several thousand primary teachers, nurses, physicians and such other skilled and semi-skilled party cadres to increase its presence in the establishment to marginalize the opposition support in the government. Critics say, examination for the public jobs is being turned into a platform to recruit party cadres and activists to create a support base in the administration.

Meanwhile, hundreds of retired people from government services and armed forces officers have been recalled to the job, put them on promotion and allowed them to function in new post or go on retirement with full arrears and retirement benefits.

The message here is that those who lost jobs previously on ground of misconduct or gross indiscipline may feel secured of restoration of jobs for party loyalty and continue to work as party activists within the government. Last month a government official told that he had returned home after seven years from the USA and joined his previous job. He said he left the government job on political ground but now the party to which he belonged came back to power and so he returned and joined his earlier job as a BCS cadre officer. He said his children are attending schools and colleges in the USA and he is waiting for completion of 25 years job this month (March) so that he can go on early retirement with full pension benefits.

This is one of several hundred such cases showing how the government is politicizing the administration and using public fund for political ends. The question is when the government has left open the door of the public exchequer to its loyalists, the access to public fund and jobs became almost totally closed to people belonging to the opposition.

It is going to destabilize the social fabrics and bring tension in the polity at a time when most Opposition workers are on the run or put under bar. Democracy depends on the rule of law. It brings a party to power through fair election but once the polling is over the government and its services belong to all the masses irrespective of who voted it to power and who does not. But the culture of political hostility in the country is belying the very basic foundation of the state.

On the other hand, the government made 97 highly placed officials OSD who remain idle for over a year. Of them 37 officers were made OSD over two years ago. They don̢۪t know why they are kept as OSD. These officers were branded as dissents, who were in better in good positions during the BNP regime. According to ministry of Establishment 284 high officials in public service were made OSD. Of them 11 are Secretaries, 51 Additional Secretaries, 93 Joint- Secretaries, 80 Deputy Secretaries, 42 Senior Assistant Secretaries and 11 Assistant Secretaries.

It is alleged to fulfill their vacuum, government promoted its cadres jumping over the senior ones that made the seniors disappointed and insulted. On the other hand, it makes the administration weak and inefficient.

Corruption of AL

The present government commits digital forgery and corruption in every sector. Let us see what happened in appointing some employees in Dhaka Medical College of Bangladesh. It is alleged, the present government to enhance the volume of illegal money through bribe committed digital forgery and corruption in appointing government servants. Out of hundreds of thousands of such incidents considering the space constraint, let us cite the case of Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH), which manifests the extent of bribe and forgery. According to press report, the pro-government administration appointed more employees defying the DMCH circular (ঢামেকহা/à¦ÂªÃ §Ã ¦°Ã ¦¶Ã ¦¾/যোগদান/২০১০/২৬১). According to the notice 234 persons were given appointment though the 98 persons were supposed to be appointed. Memo No. 264 says, circular was served for appointing 15 security guards, but 19 persons were appointed. Under Memo No. 265, 32 persons were supposed to be appointed for the post of security guards, but in reality 81 persons were appointed.

A pro-AL leader of the fourth class employees union of Dhaka Medical College by taking bribes illegally earned millions of Bangladeshi Taka $1= Tk. 70/ (The Daily Amardesh, 10 July 2010). Ministers, MPs, (Members of Parliament), Secretaries, bureaucrats, ruling party leaders and even the journalists, recommended and advocated for these appointments.

Quoting sources, the daily informed, the recommendations that came in favour of the candidates broke all the records of the past. A minister recommended in favour 250 candidates, though the DMCH notified to appoint 98 employees. On the other hand, there some candidates for each of whom several ministers recommended. About 500 recommendations came from the ministers, not to speak of the MPS and other front-ranking leaders of AL and its other front organizations. The recommendations also manifest how serious the AL ministers, MPs, and leaders are serious to appoint their people in government jobs. As a result, the concerned authorities cannot, but appoint the AL cadres and activists denying the better candidates having no political identity.

Quoting sources, the daily informed, the recommendations that came in favour of the candidates broke all the records of the past. A minister recommended 250 candidates, though the DMCH notified to appoint 171 employees. On the other hand, there some candidates for one several ministers recommended for each candidates. About 500 recommendations came from the ministers, not to speak of the MPS and other front-ranking leaders of AL and its other front organizations.

BCL leaders and activists also alarmingly are engaged in making illegal money through tender, admission, allotting seats in residential halls and hostels of universities and colleges. Press reports say, BCL leaders of Eden Girls College Nizum and Tania illegally arranged the admission of 900 students in the 2008-09 academic year. Due to the strict rules of the Natioal University, they being failed to arrange admission for all made money by changing the subjects of 700 students. They realised Tk. 10,000 to 50,000 from each students.

Identical reports poured in newspaper offices daily. Sky-high allegations against the activists of AL, BCL, Awami Jubo League (AJL) is being piled up daily. The Daily Amar Desh editorially (March 23, 2010) said, on an average 400 allegations including kidnapping, murder, rape, extortion, illegal occupation of land and houses or shops, drug-trafficking, illegal business through tender and in lieu of admission in educational institutions throughout the country are reported against activists of these organizations.

Leaders and activists of the ruling party and its front organizations fight with one another throughout the country to grab tender. The Prime Minister failed to prevent the menace of party cadres. Few of the cadres who committed several crimes were given punishment. As a result, they feel secured and indulge themselves in crimes again and again.*

The Hindus : victims of AL repression

AL leaders and activists always claim that they are the trusted friends of the Hindu community of Bangladesh. And the Hindus also outwardly believe it and help AL as vote bank to win the election, although AL illegally and forcibly occupied the maximum residential houses, business establishments and landed property of the Hindus. Abul Barakat, a genuine stooge of India, through his research unveiled such occupation. Considering the constraint of space in accommodating the details of AL occupation and oppression against the Hindus, let us cite a recent incident of persecution against a Hindu family hailing from Natore district of Bangladesh.

According to daily ‘Amar Desh’ (8 March, 2010), the AL cadres assaulting the members of the family set fire on their houses that reduced to ashes. As a result, the women and the children of the family were forced to spend their days under open sky. After a long dilly-dally the local police station on March 7 (2010) recorded the case lodged by Nabo Kumar, a member of the distressed family. Nabo Kumar in his lawsuit mentioned the names of seven persons including local AL activists Abdur Razzak, his son Razaul, and Mamun. Abdur Razzak was arrested.

Nirmala Devi, the elderly mother of Nabo Kumar alleged that the attackers belong to AL. So no case is to be lodged against them. They also demanded that the case lodged earlier is to be withdrawn. But my sons would not with the case lodged against them. They burnt the houses of my sons due to this negation. They beat my son and grandson in broad day light and compelled them to signature in a blank paper. They drove out my three sons from the village and threatened to kill them wherever they would get them. Local AL leaders and police took no preventive measures when they were informed of their intimidations.

The woman informed, in 1999 Rezaul, a son of AL activist Abdur Razzak in front of Baraigram Women Collge chopped Prodip Kumar, her grandson. One of the hands of Prodip was severely damaged. Prodip̢۪s father Nabo Kumar lodged a case mentioning the names off three persons, including Rezaul. The case still remains pending with the Police Station. Since the grand alliance assumed power, the family faced pressure to withdraw the case. The miscreants took away the jute from their land when her sons declined to withdraw the case. Another case was lodged in this regard what made the miscreants more furious. They on several occasions assaulted them and looted the house of Soilendranath Pramanic, the uncle of Prodip that led them to lodge another case mentioning the names of 13 persons as accused. On February 25 the accused going to the house of Prodip asked his father Nabo Kumar asked him to sign a white stamp in order to withdraw the case. Being angered, the miscreants seriously assaulted Prodip, his father Nabo Kumar and mother Sudha Rani in front of other members of the family. The victims still did not agree to sign on white page. The miscreants later dragged Prodip to a road adjoining the house of Razzak and binding him to a tree with rope severely beat him.

Putting a chopper on his neck they at last succeeded in taking the undertaking of Prodip in a blank paper. On having heard the incident, Habibur Rahman, the Assistant Sub-inspector of Baraigram Police Station, when went to the spot he was informed that they were settling the dispute and he had no function to remain present there. Lying on the hospital bed, Nabo Kumar said, he signed on a white paper to save his life. For my failure to withdraw the case, as I was admitted to the hospital, they burnt my house at mid-night. None of the member of Nabo Kumar could remain present in the house after the incident. Solendranath, the younger brother of Nabo Kumar, informed, on February 25, they drove him and his son Bidduth out from our house. The boy was appearing at the SSC examination. He remained hiding in a nearby Upazilla (sub-district). Solendranath’s mother, wife, and his minor baby stayed at the house. The miscreants on several nights repeatedly knocked at the door and windows at night. They intimidated his family members. His elder son, who is a student of Bangla College of Dhaka, could not come home apprehending the security of his life. They stopped the water to irrigate him paddy field. They warned that the AL leaders would not be able to save them. The daily Amardesh, 8 March (2010) informed, Mizanur Rahman, the General Secretary of Baraigram Upazila AL admitted that he was informed of the incident. â€Å“It is unfortunate, but I have nothing to do. It is committed by the new AL supporters. They are opportunists,” he opined.*

Government didt save the Army officers

It is tragic to note that the nation experienced the most gruesome murder of 57 brilliant Army officer of Bangladesh Army. It is alleged that a strong group related to the government and the ruling party was involved with this horrible murder that was directed to wage a civil war and ruin the defence forces of the country.

The way her government dealt with the BDR carnage unveils that the government was not active to avert the massacre and allow the murderers to flee away to their safe destination. Whatever explanations Sheikh Hanisa and her colleagues or she put forward are not enough to set aside the blame of failure in protecting the Army officers and nabbing the killers. It remains hidden what logic prompted her to select the most controversial and biased Jahangir Kabir Nanok and Mirza Azam as mediators to deal with the rebel cliques. These two are the most junior in respect of age, experience and status in comparison to other AL leaders. Besides, questions among the general mass floated, why they were chosen as mediators and why the rebels had trust on them. They fled to India during the state of emergency. Critics claim that they were chosen as mediators to protect the Indian secret killers. Opposition circle blames that some elements belonging to the ruling hierarchy had their hands behind the massacre.

An Indian columnist and analysts pointing to the involvement of the ruling party in the BDR massacre says: â€Å“--------- many of the front-ranking Awami League leaders were directly or indirectly involved behind the BDR Mutiny. Meanwhile, two of the most controversial figures, whose names came at the front right after the mutiny, Jahangir Kabir Nanak (presently a state minister for local government ministry) and Mirza Azam (ruling party’s whip in the parliament), have suddenly disappeared from the media. It is even reported that, both were ready to flee the country, once the investigation reports were already done.

A city leader of the ruling party named Torab Ali Akhand (who earlier served in BDR) is already being grilled by investigation agencies after arrest. Akhand already mentioned names of a few influential Awami League leaders, including a close relative of the Prime Minister as his patron in the bloody mutiny. He also told interrogators that a few dozens of arms and thousands of round of ammunitions as well as ´some´ Arges grenades were taken from him by some leaders of Bangladesh Chatra League (Student’s front of the ruling party) and Jubo League (youth front of the ruling party). Torab was the custodian of looted arms, ammunitions and explosives from BDR headquarters after the mutiny. He also, at the instruction of an influential Awami League leader brought out procession in favor of the mutiny to give encouragement to the mutineers.” (Sunita Paul: American Chronicle March 19, 2009). Sunita Paul alleged:

Sunita Paul added â€Å“Bangladesh Awami League´s leader Torab Ali Akhand and his son Leather Liton (a notorious terrorist), BDR deputy assistant director (DAD) Towhid confessed to the interrogators giving details of the conspiracy. According to facts disclosed by them the matter of ´blueprint´ to stage the massacre and kill Army officers were already within the knowledge of a number of influential members of the government. They are Sheikh Hasina Wajed´s cousin and influential leader of Bangladesh Awami League Sheikh Fazlul Karim Selim; Sheikh Hasina Wajed´s nephew and Member of Parliament Sheikh Fazley Noor Taposh and Home Minister Advocate Sahara Khatun.

â€Å“Criminal Investigation Department (CID) sources came to know that members of ´angry´ BDR men sat in a number of secret meetings at the residence of Sheikh Fazlul Karim Selim and Barrister Fazley Noor Taposh. Holding of such meetings began from October last year. Barrister Taposh assured the BDR men that once his party comes in power, the issue of several demands by the members of Bangladesh’s border security forces shall be duly considered. He (Taposh) arranged meetings between the kingpins of BDR massacre with Awami League leader Torab Ali Akhand.

â€Å“There are allegations of involvement of Bangladesh Awami League’s student wing leader Harunur Rashid Aka, Leather Liton and his brother-in-law Rezaul Karim Razu with the brutal massacre conspiracy as well as of helping the fleeing mutineers.

â€Å“¾ (3-4) days after the election and declaration of landslide victory of Bangladesh Awami League, some leaders of BDR met Taposh at his electoral office at Sky Center at Dhaka´s Dhanmondi area. Subsequently, the kingpins of BDR massacre met Barrister Taposh´s uncle and influential leader of the ruling party, Sheikh Fazlul Karim Selim on February 13, 2009 at 9:00 pm at his residence at Banani residential area in Dhaka, with their demands.

â€Å“Later, the kingpins of the massacre prepared a leaflet (which was later distributed inside the BDR headquarters on February 24) and sent copies of it to Barrister Fazley Noor Taposh, Sheikh Fazlul Karim Selim, Home Minister Advocate Sahara Khatun and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina Wajed.

â€Å“Huge volume of counterfeit currency was recovered from a residential hotel named Imperial Guest House in Dhaka, which is owned by the brother of Home Minister Advocate Sahara Khatun.” (Sunita Paul, Is there any government in Bangladesh? April 11, 2009, http://www.americanchronicle.com/articles/view/98062)

It was alleged that government policy and efforts in dealing with the situation entirely went in favour of the killers that led to the murder of the Army officers.

Mysteriously no effort was made to protect the lives of the Army officers and the chastity of the wives and daughters of some deceased officials. Government, secretariat, parliament, administration, armed forces, police, RAB due to want of proper guidance and instruction could do nothing to avert killing, rape or looting that continued for about two days at the heart of the capital city.

Why Prime Minister, without the DG of BDR, agreed and allowed the rebels to hold talks with her? Those who called on the Prime Minister were escorted to her residence like VVIPs. Their names, addresses, designations, etc. were not even recorded at the entrance of the Prime Minister̢۪s residence. It means, Prime Minister̢۪s office, have little record or information about those who held talks with the Prime Minister. After conversation Prime Minister declared DAD Touhid the head of BDR. General amnesty was declared for all. The delegates returned to BDR Headquarters enjoying VVIP treatment.

Question also arose why the BDR Headquarters was kept under the darkness for the whole night. Who really ordered to turn off electricity for the entire Peelkhana and surrounding areas at night? Non-restoration of power in BDR Headquarters and its surrounding areas indicates that some elements within the government hierarchy were directly involved in the carnage and they kept the area dark to ease the flight of the killers. Nobody can also figure out why the Army was told to retreat their barricade up to five kilometers from their original position!(http://www.amardeshbd.com/dailynews/detail_news_index.php?NewsType=bistarito&SectionID=home&NewsID=214002,)

Though there was no possibility of Army operation in BDR Headquarters, the local MP Barrister Fazlee Nur Taposh, overtly saving their lives and properties instructed the local residents through loudspeakers to vacate their homes situated within 3-km radius of the BDR Headquarters this helped the killers to flee away alongside other BDR jawans and their family members. (The Daily Sangram, March 3, 2009).

Local leaders and activists of the ruling party brought a procession chanting party slogans that even repeatedly entered the BDR Headquarters. Participating in the procession they went out of the BDR Headquarters.

Question surfaced why curfew was not imposed around the BDR Headquarters? Why police, RAB or Army were not deployed around the BDR complex? Sources believe that the ruling AL, particularly some of its leaders, for their controversial role will remain accountable to the nation for decades to come.* (Mohammad Zianla Abedin is a Bangladeshi researcher and journalist.)
