[ALOCHONA] Indian govt working on river-linking project

Indian govt working on river-linking project

The Indian government is working to 'transfer water from rivers by digging canals', Sunita Narain, director general of the New Delhi-based Centre for Science and Environment, said on January 20.'The reasons behind the (Indian) government's initial move for river interlinking were to transfer a large amount of water from northern India to southern India. But the government has realised that it is a Herculean task, which were always done,' she said when talking to New Age at the National Press Club in Dhaka.

India unilaterally withdraws waters from almost all the 54 rivers it shares with Bangladesh. The two countries signed an agreement in 1996 on sharing of the waters of the river Ganges for 30 years.Meanwhile, protracted negotiations on the Teesta since 1952 eluded any resolution of the dispute over its waters. Water-sharing of the remaining 52 rivers remain unaddressed.

Experts say the mega-river interlinking project, if implemented, would cause loss of habitat and livelihood of millions including tribal, rural and other riverine communities, leading to their destitution on both sides of the border. The interlinking project is 'flawed' and 'undemocratic', and is based upon techno-engineering assumptions that are unrealistic and capital-intensive.

It has the potential to do enormous harm to not only the people of India and lower riparian Bangladesh but will entail slow death of the very rivers which are proposed to be diverted and linked.

Sunita, also a leading researcher, said most of the research organisations in the developing countries were suffering with credibility crisis. The research organisations must restore public credibility first if they want to do something substantial, she added

[ALOCHONA] Why a new airport?

We already have the name of an airport that is still in a "pre-liquid" stage. But that is not our concern. Nobody should have any quarrel with the idea of having important iconic structures named after iconic figures, certainly not with the idea of having it named after the Father of the Nation. But some irreconcilable critics ask whether it is to have an airport named after Bangabandhu that a new airport is being built or the other way round? But that is not the issue.

One doesn't either have a particular preference for the area proposed for the site of the new airport. That is not the problem either. Anywhere, where an airport can be built and which meets our future requirement should do. It doesn't matter whether that is in Gopalganj or Chagalnayaa, or Rangpur or Dhaka Dakhhin, or in Dublar Char. However, the only concern one has at this particular moment with the proposal is the very idea of a new airport as well as the recommended site.

In this context one couldn't have been more pleasantly surprised by the rapidity with which this project has moved since its conceptualisation in 2009. One should have no quarrel with the issue if the idea has stemmed from objective study and not from political considerations. Unfortunately, as things have emerged, one cannot be faulted for seeing it as the brainchild of partisan thinking, more so by the manner the issue has been handled. When it takes years to complete feasibility study of much smaller projects in terms of size and financial outlay, this takes the cake.

The idea came to public knowledge sometime early 2010, and in August the same year a pre-feasibility study by the Ministry of Civil Aviation and Tourism sought approval of the cabinet committee on economic affairs to implement the project that was estimated to cost Tk.50,000 crore. The committee had also visited seven sites in Gazipur, Tangail, and Mymensingh districts, and selected three among those. But the site was changed shortly thereafter. We are not sure why.

But the rationale proffered by the government for the project as being of "an urgent necessity," and the speed with which it has moved (reportedly, land acquisition has already started) and the change of proposed site, have raised serious doubts about the inspiration behind the idea.

The pre-feasibility study report making a case for it says that about 80% of the air passengers use Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport (HSJIA). Mentioning passenger handling capacity in percentage terms is quite crafty. Without having an idea of the actual number of passengers that use the airport now it means nothing.

The second logic -- the airport has only one runway and its annual passenger handling capacity is 80 lakh, which is inadequate compared to increasing number of passengers. The statement is unclear. What will be the actual number of the "increasing number of passengers" tomorrow, next year, after five years, and ten years hence? Under the upgrading scheme of the then ZIA (which was to have started end of 2008, but since discarded) a second runway on the western side was proposed.

The third argument is, due to space constraint in the terminal building, modern five-level security concept cannot be employed, which is mandatory as per the ICAO guidelines. This is a very potent argument. One would like to ask as to how other international airports, smaller than the HSJIA, address the stipulation.

Fourthly, proximity of the cantonment and major conurbations to the Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport makes its extensive future expansion impossible. One has to only look at the north and north western side of the airport to see the vast tract of empty land that can be utilised for expansion.

In this context we feel that the government is obliged to make public the details of the study basing on which the plan for a new airport has been approved, as also the logic behind shifting the choice to Airal Beel. It is important for the public to know whether or not we could have done with modifying and expanding the existing one. It is important to dispel the public perception that it is a whimsical undertaking stemming from political pressure.

It is indeed a vast project that not only involves constructing a new airport but many other things besides, which will involve 25,000 acres as compared to the 2,000 acres that the HSJIA occupies. And, do we have a ministry of environment study of the ecological impact of the project?

There may well be a need for a new airport. The question that needs to be answered is have we done all the necessary studies to justify discarding the current one and going for an altogether new one? Have we spent the optimum effort in evaluating the need for a project that will involve more than $7 billion, and impact a large number of people adversely?

There is always a predilection for mega-projects that is justified by tenuous arguments, and where other considerations than public good motivate ideas. That is what the government should guard against.

[ALOCHONA] Successful labour management

Worker by day, slave by night

Savar, Jan 26 (bdnews24.com) — RAB personnel have rescued 30 people including two children and two women tied up in chains from a brick kiln at Savar. They were rescued from Ekota Brick Field in an hour-long drive around 8:30pm on Wednesday.

The elite crime busters say they conducted the drive following a tip-off that several people were being forced to work at the brick-field, tortured and bound in chains. The victims said they were forced to work against their will.

After the days' work, they would be tied up. The food provided to them was meagre. If anyone tried to escape, they would be severely tortured, they said.

The law enforcers have arrested manager Sultan Mohammad Ratan, 30, and contractor Hossain Gazi, 69. RAB media wing director M Sohael said the people rescued were aged between seven and 30. A child aged one and a half years was also among them. Some of them have been there for over three months.

Ratan and Hossain told RAB that eight people, associated with the ruling party, were among the owners of the brick field. Two contractors—'Selim' and 'Ariful' had brought the workers from Satkhira, but left without paying them although the contractors themselves had been paid in advance.

"The workers were chained so that they can't escape," Ratan said. Maj Ahsan Kabir who led the drive said no one would be spared, no matter who they were. One of the rescued, 'Faisal', said he was tied up for 14 days. "They used to tie us up at night in a room. We were under the watch of armed guards."

RE: [ALOCHONA] Why another int'l airport?

to farida majid + other similar intellectuals

=========================

when will you learn to condemn....the practise of naming trees, building, roads, airports, university,
medical college, stadium, hospitals, ship, hurricane, port,.........anything.......after the name
of the same political leader?

If PM hasina had a little bit of education, sophistication, maturity, wisdom.......she would have asked her chamchas,
to stop this excercise.........that makes a great leader cheap.

BNP leaders had at least that much self-control,  not to name 23333 pieces, after zia.

People who beleive in democracy, and nourishes the idea of ' family dynasty in politics'.....in Bangladesh,
are just no1 hippocrates and confused.

It is unbeleivable that the name of dhaka airport , bearing the memory of 1 of our greatest and cleanest leaders, can be changed by politicians.

Time will tell , who are following the just path.

Your main objection to this proposed airport is its proposed name.  That is your obsession. I really wish you would stop oppressing others with your obsessions about the house of  Mujib.  Political dynasty is an unfortunate tangle, and the entire subcontinent is enmeshed in it. We see it other countries too.

My interest is Arial Beel and its ecological and geological environ, and the humans who live there, whose livelihoods depend on the wetland.

Get a bit of reality.  Not everyone is driven by hatred of a political party like you are. Political parties are here today and gone tomorrow.  Honestly, I can't be thinking about political parties all the time.  How do you guys sustain the hatred and go on justifying your myopia?  You will even  resort to abusive language and insult others for not echoing your rage.

 Anyway,  Arial Beel is precious!

This airport is critically important. I have mentioned before that there is a critical shortage of infrastructure projects to name after the house of Mujib. Whether its 500 crores or 75% of the annual budget, this high priority must be met.

So what if people are dying - they're only ordinary. They are happy to live in misery if it means the continued worship of Mujib, their father and lord.

I wait for Farida Majid's penance for the sin she has committed.

Why another int'l airport?

Shahabuddin Ahmad

The State Minister for Housing & Public Works, Advocate Abdul Mannan Khan, in an effort to drum up support, has been haranguing the people of greater Dhaka district and promising a new airport and a new city in the Airal Beel, one of the three leading water bodies of the country, spreading over a few police stations of Munshingonj and Dhaka districts.

According to newspaper reports supporters of the Government came in to hear the State Minister because he promised them better life, employment and economic activities which the promised airport will bring. It is not his ministerial responsibility, while the Minister for Civil Aviation & Tourism, GM Quader decided not to speak on the matter.

   Vehement opposition
The other side of the picture is that people of Dhaka, Munshiganj and the other adjoining areas, who are going to be affected due to their apprehended eviction, vehemently opposed the setting up of the projects and they have robustly said through organised demonstration that the projects could be built over their dead bodies only. Such opposition to the proposed airport is, however, not new. People of Trishal, Mymensingh, Faridpur, Gopalgonj and Madaripur also agited against the project earlier. Total area of land that the Government has plans to acquire for the airport is far more in access than necessary. Shahjalal International Airport has an area of 2,000 acres whereas for the proposed airport the plan is to acquire 15,000 acres and for the proposed Bangabandhu City an area of 10,000 acres.

Hundreds of thousands of people live in and around the waterbody and earn their living from here. It has an area of 1,66,600 acres and generally goes under 20-25 ft. water during the rainy season and 5 ft. during the dry season. Rice (40,000 MT), fish (700 MT) and vegetables (10,000 MT) grow here and the total estimated value is around Tk. 40,000 (forty thousand) crore.
The base of the Beel is made up of 'pit coal' according to a satellite picture which was released earlier about the formation of the land mass in Airal Beel and this information is already known.

Pit coal cannot bear heavy load of widebodied aircraft as a result of which the foundation is likely to sink according to experts.
A study undertaken a few years back by a Danish Firm for upgrading of Shahjalal International Airport, then known as Zia International Airport, indicates the following projections in respect of aircraft movement and passengers' growth of the airport.

This shows that there is ample scope for Shahjalal International Airport to handle more aircraft every hour and more passengers up to 2025. The study further says that by the year 2030 the airport will be able to handle 1.80 crore passengers with the implementation of some development projects for modernization of the airport.

   3 international airports
There are three International Airports, in Bangladesh now, namely, Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka, Shah Amanat Airport in Chittagong and Osmani International Airport in Sylhet. All these airports are capable of receiving and sending wide bodied aircraft including Boeing-747. Shahjalal Airport was established in 1979, Chittagong airport was upgraded with Japanese Financial and Technical Assistance in the year 1998 and the Osmani International Airport in Sylhet has been upgraded gradually.

Shahjalal International Airport, (one runway 10,500 ft. long) formally known as Zia International Airport, due to its overwhelming use, as it handles about 90 per cent of the total air passengers and cargo, has already been expanded by adding a cargo village, multistoried car park, renovation of departure lounge and extension of the terminal building.

A project was taken up by the CAAB to upgrade Shahjalal International Airport under mixed credit financing of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Denmark at a cost of Tk. 41,404 lakh and it was approved by the government in 2008. The components of the project are: i) Re-construction of Taxi-way; ii) Modernization of drainage System; iii) Procurement of Maintenance equipment; iv) Procurement of Visual guidance; v) Procurement of Primary and Secondary Radar; vi) Procurement of Navigational Aids; vii)  Procurement of Radio-Communication equipment; viii) Extension & construction of operation building; Refurbishment of transmitting building etc. The process of inviting tenders are still under inter-ministerial consultations, although the project was supposed to be initiated physically earlier and completed by 2012.

   Adverse impact
The question now arises that since Shahjalal International Airport (SIA) will be able to handle 1.80 crore passengers by 2030 and a plan is already under process of finalisation, why construct a new airport in a wetland area at a proposed cost of Tk. 50,000 crore for which thousands of people will be displaced, agricultural produce worth Tk. 40,000 crores annually will be destroyed and damage the ecology and bio-diversity of the Airal Beel area?
The cronies of the government who support the establishment of the airport and a new city in Airal Beel --- both in the name of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman --- often cite well-known airports such as, Osaka Kansai International Airport in Japan and Chek Lap Kok Airport in Hong Kong which have been built on islands and say that building the proposed airport in the Airal Beel will not pose any problem.

Those who advise the Government in this fashion do really live in ivory towers because the level of economic development and technological achievement of Japan and Hong Kong are not comparable with that of Bangladesh. Besides, the agency in Japan and Hong Kong took long time to study the need for expansion, whereas, the present government has not done any serious home work for the project yet, although information is available that foreign firms are lobbying with the high ups of the government for the project.

Osaka Kansai International Airport was built on an artificial island of 2.5 miles in length and land filling alone took 3 years. It stands on columns which can be adjusted to subsidence. This is one of the most expensive airport in the world and took 7 years for Japan to construct the airport. The Chek Lap Kok Airport is a replacement of the former Kaitak Airport of HK, established in 1925. The completion of this airport also took 7 years from 1991-1998 and the cost was US$ 20 billion. It has been built partly in hilly area, partly on an artificial island.

   Danida study
The Danida study, a work of professionals, says that in the very long run after forecast and the master plan period it may be necessary to add a new runway parallel to the present one, suggesting it to be located on the Western site of the present runway. Alternately, when the traffic in far distant future will exceed the maximum available runway capacity, a relocation of the entire airport to a remote site must be considered. The SIA will take, therefore, another 25 years to reach the suggested stage according to the recommendations in the study.

As a matter of fact in its study, Danida has said that even though economic and social progress have been achieved by Bangladesh during the last decade, Bangladesh still continue to be one of the poorest country of the world due to prevailing social, political and economic reasons. If, however, for any God-sent boom and due to unforeseen priority yet unknown either to the Government or to the gentry of the country, the number of air passengers increase by leaps and bounds, SIA can be expanded within its existing area as mentioned before by offering efficient management of passenger handling, landing parking, take off facilities, modern control tower, expansion of terminal building and if necessary transferring the domestic service to the old Tejgaon Airport which, most of the time is idle. For emergency services, in case of accidents and temporary closure, alternate airports in Chittagong and Sylhet can help as air bridges.

   Feasibility study
The government, therefore, should engage itself first to have a feasibility study including a market survey to justify the need for a international airport and if the studies are found to be giving good justifications economically, socially, and politically then only the Government can take up the projects and NOT now. I refer here to a story which Abdul Mannan, a former State Minister for Civil Aviation & Tourism, and who also served as the Managing Director of Biman and Director of Finance of the same organization, wrote in the concluding parts of his commentary "Airal Beel Airport". It says, "In fine we may quote the famous story of the invisible robe, the King and his wise counsels. The master tailor pantomimically dressed the King with the invisible robe. Learned Counsels started praising the robe. The King came to his senses when a little boy cried out, Oh, look, the King is naked". We need a little boy with courage to tell the Government, the unalloyed truth.

[ALOCHONA] Felani Killing Is An International Issue Now

Felani Killing: Now An International Issue

http://www.amadershomoy.com/
Report dated Jan. 27, 2011

Please go to the above or following link and read a today's (Jan. 27, 2011) news on the Felani killing by an United States Investigative primary report. This killing is no longer a bilateral issue between the honeymoon relation of Bangladesh's Bangladeshi Awami League (BAL) and Indian governments. It has become an International issue now.

New report reveals horrific and barbaric crimes committed by the BSF of India with the tacit blessings of the Bangladesh's Awami League government. Peoples around the world should raise their voices and put BAL government including Sheikh Hasina and her cabinet members to justice for suppressing the real evidences. Also, bring so called Human Rights activists of Bangladeshi living home or abroad to justice for keeping their mouth shuts and for intentionally ignoring the crimes against humanity.

> Rice is the worst enemy of mankind
>
> What is the main obstacle of our country's (Bangladesh) development (-prosperity- improvement-betterment) ? If it is asked, certainly different people will give different answer. But if you analyze it from the view-point of medical science, then I will say rice is our worst national enemy. Rice is such a prominent food item which contains excessive amount of sugar (starch/carbohydrate). So it hastens our physical growth & we become adult (mature) very quickly. That's why we get married promptly & start having babies more speedily. Sometimes it seems to me that just a few days ago a guy who himself was a baby, now he is completely exhausted (-fagged-worn-out) being a father or grandfather of many children. That means eating rice is the root cause of population explosion in such a dreadful manner. If you don't believe you can look on the rice-eating countries, like china-india-indonesia-Bangladesh-thailand-japan-korea, all of them are going through population problem in the highest degree. For the unimaginable explosion of population, government become a failure even spending billions of dollar annually to provide our basic needs like food, cloth, residence, education & health.
>
> Rice not only make us adult (mature) very quickly, but also rapidly converts us to old guys. As a result we become incompetent (& worthless) for any jobs and turn to a burden to the family (& thus to the society & country). As because in old age we lack energy to work & various diseases invade our body & mind. It is true that sugar (starch/carbohydrate) is the only source of our physical energy & we can not survive without it. But it is also true that excessive supply of sugar (starch/carbohydrate) is horribly harmful for us. It can be reasonably compared to water. We all know that normal water is the root cause of our live & flood (i.e. excess) water causes our death. In our country almost ninety percent of people found to be have gastric ulcer who visits doctor. Excessive amount of sugar (starch/carbohydrate) in rice causes flatulency (gas) in the stomach, gas formation tends to the acidity & acidity leads to ulcer. Perhaps nobody will deny the fact that rice is the root cause of diabetes (I mean from the imbalance of carbohydrate produced by rice in our body for many years). You will not find gastric ulcer & diabetes epidemic in those countries where (wheat) bread is the main food item. Now I am to say that this poor country has to waste millions of dollars every year to import the medicines only for this two diseases.
>
> Some may say that most of the medicines of this two diseases are manufactured in our country. Yea, that's right ; but raw materials, machinery, packing items all are have to import. There are many pathological test done to diagnose these diseases and these diagnostic machineries & chemical reagents are also have to import spending lot of foreign currencies. Yet we can ignore the squandering of invaluable time (working hour) in the doctor's chamber, hospital & sick-bed. Not only these two diseases but hundreds of diseases can be named having link with this notorious rice. According to the physicians, there is no difference between eating a handful of rice & a handful of sugar. You may say that laziness is the main obstacle in the way of our country's development rather than rice. Then I will say that rice creates laziness in our body & mind. The excessive amount of sugar/carbohydrate in rice is the real cause of laziness. As it is usually seen we become exhausted from least exertion, excessive amount of sugar in rice is responsible for this situation.
>
> As rice contains immoderate amount of sugar & after eating rice it is digested quickly & the principal ingredient (sugar) is quickly absorbed in our bloodstream & the sugar level suddenly become high, so we begin to feel drowsy, weak & lazy like a diabetic patient. You can say, Japanese (, Chinese & Koreans) are also rice eater & still they are not lazy (like us); on the contrary they are very much active & hardworking & they don't become tired from little labor. Yea, in this regard they got some climatic advantage. They don't sweat so much even during hard work because of their cold weather, as we do. As a result they don't break-away easily from little labor like us. Moreover people of Mongolian origin (flat-nose) are anthropologically very much energetic & industrious. On the contrary we sweat much because of our hot & damp weather and that's why we get easily tired, exhausted through losing essential mineral salts with sweats. So excess sugar in rice & excess sweating both are equally responsible for our laziness, debility & inactivity. Some pundits oppose that not rice but excessive eating of rice is injurious to health. But the problem is that rice has such a peculiar uncontrollable temptation to eat excess that few of us has the power to knock out such seduction. Contrarily it is very difficult for anybody to eat excess of wheat bread. As because rice is soft & wet (that's why easy to eat) and wheat bread is hard & dry.
>
> Somebody may say that poverty is our most vital problem. If you think little deeply then you will realize that rice is the basic cause of our incurable poverty. As because if we fill our stomach with rice unto the nose, it will digest & absorbed so quickly that within two hours we will become hungry again. So we have to eat too much & our expenditure on food purpose become high & it force us to reduce expenditure on other fields (like health, education, infrastructure etc) . Look at our physical strength or (slender) physical structure ; both are ridiculous, pathetic. And the notorious (black sheep) rice is responsible for this poor status. You will obviously understand the demerits of rice if you compare the physical structure of rice-eater Indians, Chinese & Indonesians with wheat-eater Arabian, European & American. You will certainly notice that players of rice-eating countries can not do much well in the strenuous games (like football, cricket, marathon, wrestling etc). The reason is same and that is if we eat rice our blood sugar level (energy) rises to the highest level for a short time & then it again reduce to an alarmingly lowest position.
>
> On the contrary, if you eat wheat (bread) it will digest steadily taking much time & that's why your blood sugar level will not suddenly jump to highest level for a little while. As a result your calorie/ energy level will remain in standard position comparatively for longer time. Like rice it does not suddenly rise to the highest level & then fall to the lowest level. If we do not start eating wheat bread quickly in stead of rice, then the millions of dollars our government is wasting every year for family planning, will have to continue for how many years Allah knows ! On the contrary, governments of the wheat-eater countries (like Middle east, Australia, Europe, America, Russia etc) are facing failure to increase their population even offering billion dollars bonus to their couples. Some analyst thinks that poverty & ignorance are responsible for overpopulation, not rice. If you look at the Arab countries you will see that their education rate very low & still they are free from overpopulation. And there was no population problem even (a few decades ago) when they were poor.
>
> Some people think that illiteracy is the main problem in the way of our national prosperity. In this point we can say that poverty is responsible for illiteracy, over-population is responsible for poverty & rice is responsible for over-population. Recently many people are claiming that corruption is our chief national problem. Think in this way that poverty-illiteracy-unawareness is responsible for corruption & in our country the primary cause of poverty & illiteracy is overpopulation. Population not being a blessing rather has become a curse & rice is mainly responsible for this kind of consequence. Some savant says that Japan is an overpopulated country and still there is no problem as their people are highly skilled. Really Japan is an exception & exception can not be taken as a formula. So we have to entirely give up the habit of eating rice from right now & start having wheat flour bread in order to build a healthy & happy nation. (Common oat (avena sativa) flour is more healthier than wheat flour. Because one of the greatest vitamines are usually made from its juice) I know this is a difficult job and it can not be done overnight but we must try our best.
>
> Another problem is that our women community are more interested in cooking rice than baking wheat bread. As because cooking rice is very easy but baking wheat bread is much hard. At the same time women should think that to eat rice we need to cook many delicious curry but to eat wheat bread these are not essential. Only potato fry or pulse's soup is enough. At this cost we can buy seasonal fruits with the money usually spent for vegetables. That would be also better for our health. As the vegetables price is sky-high, it would be wise to consume one kilogram fruits in lieu of three kilogram vegetables. As we know vegetables contain less nutrient & yet most of them are spoiled by heat during cooking. To save our women from the hazard of baking wheat bread, the owner of hotel, restaurant & food industry can play a vital role. They have to given up the habit of preparing incredibly small & thin bread fried with six month old burnt oil & rather have to begin making mega-size wheat bread like middle east countries, one of which is enough for an entire family. Moreover we can make wheat bread machine available in every family like Europe & America. Some may argue that wheat flour is more costly than rice, but at the same time they should also consider the facts of various diseases like diabetes & premature senility.
>
> According to the experts, wheat flour's price can be easily reduced by mixing corn maze with it. We should also think about huge amount of water needed to produce paddy (rice), which will be a real problem in our country in near future (also for many other countries). On the contrary so much water is not necessary for the cultivation of wheat. To acquire hundred percent benefit from eating wheat bread we have to consume unfiltered natural flour ; because the food companies (market packed flour) greatly reduce its nutrient quality by excessively straining it (to make flour white). So our request to the government is that govt. should encourage people to produce & consume wheat every way (and discourage the rice). If it is necessary we can depend on & produce genetically modified (GM) wheat. As GM food has gained acceptance in Europe & America, then we should not remain hesitated about it. Moreover our holy prophet (pbuh) has given his opinion in favor of genetically modified (GM) food. In one of his sayings he said, 'in the last age there will be superabundance of food grains'. That means rice, wheat, onion, garlic, fruits, vegetables etc of mega-size will be invented & people will be obliged to consume those (to get ride of famine).

Re: [ALOCHONA] Hypocrisy of Arab Muslim Rulers Unmasked

While the writer made all his effort to make his points clear and established with objective not very clear I simply can not fathom how he could not grasp the other side of the story, what appears as he has excelled on.

Hypocracy in the name of Islam or else for rulers in this world and in this time is a well established starategy. It is not only their hypocracy but thier tyrant rule, which got less prominece in the writer's points. also he has completely covered the fact that all of these hypocrats, tyrants and dictators become the strategic partners of world's secular forces and so called democratic countries. How about that?
If these secular forces or champion of democracy governments stop supporting them they will fall easily. Their rule will disappear from this planets. I guess the writer has doubt on people's power if they are not ruthlessly subjugated or oppressed.

Perhaps the writer had different intention!

Hypocrisy of Arab Muslim Rulers Unmasked

By Dr. Sultan Ahmad

Quran ruled out a private subjective relationship with Allah that accentual personal salvation, but equally it debarred theocracy, rule in the name of Allah, and dictatorship, rule through brute power. Tyranny, whether religious or secular, countermanded the free spirit of Islam announced and promoted in the Quran. The most honored in the sight of Allah is the believer with the most taqwa. The Glorious Qur'an mentioned this in Surah al-Hujurat (49:13.

"Indeed, the most honorable of you in the sight of Allah is the most righteous [consciousness and fear of Allah, piety]. Indeed, Allah is Knowing and Acquinted."

Contrary to this teaching of Islam, almost all Arabic speaking Muslim majority countries are currently ruled by tyrant monarchs: Kings, Princes, Sheikhs' families. In the absence of popular public support, family is the main frame of the rulers and all heads of the departments of the governments in these countries are cousins of the ruling [royal(!)] families.

Wahhabi Islam is a movement within Islam that was founded in the 18th century CE by Muhammad ibn 'Abd al-Wahhab in central Arabia. Wahhab made the central point of his reform movement the principle that absolutely every idea added to Islam after the third century of the Mulsim era (about 950 CE) was false and should be eliminated. Muslims, in order to be true Muslims, must adhere solely and strictly to the original beliefs set forth by Prophet Muhammad (peace be on him). Contemporary secular behaviors are even more anathema to Wahhab's successors. It is against modernity, secularism, and the enlightenment which current Wahhabists do battle — and it is this anti-secularism, anti-modernism which helps drive their extremism, even to the point of violence. Wahhab gave the Al Saud tribe certain credence to attacking other tribes, circumventing the Quranic edict to not fight other Muslims.

Obviously, Wahhabi religious leaders reject any reinterpretation of the Qur'an when it comes to issues settled by the earliest Muslims. Wahhabists thus oppose the 19th and 20th century Muslim reform movements which reinterpreted aspects of Islamic law in order to bring it closer to standards set by the West, particularly with regards to topics like gender relations, family law, personal autonomy, and participatory democracy. Even today, Wahhais use the term when referring to the West and at times even to their own societies.

Failed to attact Muslims to his ideas, at last Muhammad ibn 'Abd al-Wahhab settled in Dara'iyya, or Deraiya (in the Nejd), where he succeeded in converting the greatest notable, Mahommed ibn Sa'ud, who married his daughter, and so became the founder of a hereditary Wahhabite dynasty. According to Muhammad ibn Abd al Wahhab's teachings, a Muslim must present a bayah, or oath of allegiance, to a Muslim ruler during his lifetime to ensure his redemption after death. The ruler, conversely, is owed unquestioned allegiance from his people so long as he leads the community according to the laws of God. For the first time in Islamic history, Islam had to take shelter of political dynasty for its propagation – that is Wahhabism.

According to Muhammad ibn Abd al Wahhab, worship in Islam includes conventional acts of worship such as the five daily prayers; fasting; Dua (supplication); Istia'dha (seeking protection or refuge); Ist'ana (seeking help), and Istigatha (seeking benefits). Therefore, making dua to anyone or anything other than Allah, or seeking supernatural help and protection that is only befitting of a divine being from something other than Allah are acts of "shirk" and contradict Tawhid. While Saudi Wahhabis were "the largest funders of local Muslim Brotherhood chapters and other hard-line Islamists" during this time, they opposed jihadi resistance to Muslim governments and assassination of Muslim leaders because of their belief that "the decision to wage jihad lay with the ruler, not the individual believer."

Consumption of wine is forbidden to the believer because wine is literally forbidden in the Quran. Under the Wahhabis, however, the ban extended to all intoxicating drinks and other stimulants, including tobacco. Wahhabbism is considered as extremist and heretical mainly based on Wahhabbism's rejection of traditional Sunni scholars and interpretation.

Allah (swt) again says in Surah al-Baqarah (2:143) that this "Best Ummah" will also be witness over the mankind:

"And thus We have made you a median [just] community that you will be witnesses over the people and the Messenger [Muhammad] will be a witness over you".

The Wahhabi movement contradicts the above quoted assertion of the Holy Quran when it emphasizes the religion of Islam and its adherent Muslims as a "median [just] community" declaring all sorts of extremism void. Only about less than 1% of the 1.6 billion Muslims are followers of Wahhbism.

Contradicting to its teachings, ruling Wahhabi Muslims in Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and Oman, to name a few, depends on the Western Christian countries, especially America, over Glorious Allah for their protection. Is it not Shirk according to Wahhabism?

Wahhabi influence in Saudi Arabia, however, remained tangible in the physical conformity in dress, in public deportment, and in public prayer. Most significantly, the Wahhabi legacy was manifest in the social ethos that presumed government responsibility for the collective moral ordering of society, from the behavior of individuals, to institutions, to businesses, to the government itself. Saudi Arabia is also engaged in funding Muslim extremists around the Muslim World [the funding of Jammat-e-Islam of Bangladesh is an example - which not only opposed but also engaged in the organized killings of hundreds and thousands of innocent Muslims and destroying properties during the liberation war of Bangladesh].

Now let us take an account of what the Wahhabis, now-a-days in Saudi Arabia, Oman, and Qatar are practicing. According to recently published Wikileaks report - in Saudi Arabia, the government of Saudi Arabia and the Saudi royal family has been subject over many years to frequent allegations of extensive and systemic corruption originating, in part, from a lack of distinction between the personal interests and wealth of the royal family and that of the Saudi state.

Saudi King Abdullah has repeatedly urged the U.S. to attack Iran's nuclear facilities. In one diplomatic cable, King Abdullah said it was necessary to "cut the head of the snake", in reference to Iran's nuclear program.

In Jeddah, despite the Committee for the Promotion of Virtue and the Prevention of Vice (CPVPV) — the religious police of Saudi Arabia, there is an ongoing underground nightlife, which includes "the full range of worldly temptations and vices" i.e., "alcohol, drugs, sex " and "working girls" (prostitutes). Even though these parties are in complete violation of CPVPV's laws, the mutaween of CPVPV are afraid to raid these parties, since these parties are hosted by the young princes of al-Saud, the monarchic ruling house of Saudi Arabia.

The Economist summarized cable descriptions of "exclusive parties" in Saudi Arabia, stating, "An American official in Saudi Arabia describes un-Islamic mores at a clandestine Halloween party, hosted by a royal prince. Alcohol and prostitutes abounded at the event, attended by 150-plus Saudis. The host's status kept the fearsome religious police away. Such parties, the writer concluded, were increasingly typical in the kingdom."

Not only that, theses rulers also use double standards in recruiting manpower. If one possesses a passport of a developed Christian country he, in some cases, is paid more than double the salary than one who possesses passport of a developing [Muslim] country for the same job. Moreover, if one travels to these countries with a passport from developing countries, he is considered a suspect. But if one travels with a passport from developing countries, he is considered immune of all things. What discrimination by these Muslim rulers?

According to a May 2009 cable, the "Saudi regulatory system offers the al-Saud regime a means to manipulate the nation's media to promote its own agenda," and criticism of the al-Saud regime is not tolerated at all. All major media outlets in Saudi Arabia — newspapers, such as Al-Watan, Al-Hayat, and Asharq Al-Awsat, and free-to-view television networks, such as MBC Group and Rotana — are owned and controlled by the al-Saud regime, and accordingly self-censorship is the order of the day — which is "motivated by profit and politics". The pro-western ideologies in these newspapers and American programming — such as Friends, Desperate Housewives, Late Night with David Letterman and Hollywood films — are seen as an antidote to extremist religious thoughts in the recruitment of terrorists, especially young teenagers, because of the demographic target groups of these programs.

Leaders of the Muslim countries in the Middle East along with Saudi Arabia and Egypt are all liars. They tell the Americans something but hide it (for fear of public loath) from their countrymen. Israel, the enemy of the Muslim Ummah, which in its possession hundreds of nuclear overheads, is not considered enemy by these rulers. They target Iran as their enemy as it stands against the Israeli aggression of the Palestinian lands. These leaders are nothing but Munafiquns (hypocrites).

On the other hand, Saudi Arabia, the members of the royal family are found to drink alcohols, engaged in fornication while the public are stoned to death or their heads cut off for similar offense. A member of the Saudi royal family Saud bin Abdul Aziz bin Nasir al Saud had been sentenced to life imprisonment for homosexuality and murder. Now readers, think of the so called Muslim Kings, Princes and rulers of the royal families, what kind of Muslims they are. May Allah (swt)'s wrath be on them and save the people of those countries from the evil clutch of these hypocrites?

Osama bin Laden should initiate Jihad against these tyrant monarchs to free Islam and the Muslims of these countries form the clutch of these hypocrite rulers rather than blaming and targeting the Christian World.

Re: [ALOCHONA] Rice is the worst enemy of mankind

This is absolutely fascinating. I had no idea that RICE was our worst enemy!!!! OMIGOD here I have been consuming this poison almost daily since birth. No wonder my personal problems have been so insurmountable.

And I thought (just by reading great minds who comment on ALOCHONA) it was Hasina(a little more), Khaleda (slightly less) and their ilk which includes bonafide idiots, crooks or dupes like me were responsible for all of Bangladesh's problems.

Hakka Hua Alamgir, Angry Young man, LA Bamba from Oz, the Wannabe Mahathir and the Shaloming Inter-faith Dude, the Ottoman Zaglul Pasha et al, watch out the Good Doc from Jagarani homeo has you guys BEAT......

In the creation of the heavens and the earth; in the alternation of night and day; in the ships that sail upon the sea with what is beneficial to the people; in the water which Allah sends down from the sky and with which He revives the earth after its death, and He spread in it from each moving (creation); in the movement of the winds, and in the clouds that are compelled between heaven and earth surely, these are signs for people who understand.
