Languages Matter

Ripan Kumar Biswas

On 16 May 2007, the United Nations General Assembly proclaimed 2008 to be the International Year of Languages and formally recognized the observance and its resolution of the International Mother Language Day. To encourage all of its partners to increase and reinforce their activities in favor of the promotion and protection of all languages, particularly endangered ones, in all individual and collective contexts, UNESCO launched the slogan "Languages Matter!"

"Languages are indeed essential to the identity of groups and individuals and to their peaceful coexistence. They constitute a strategic factor of progress towards sustainable development and a harmonious relationship between the global and the local context," said Koïchiro Matsuura, Director-General of UNESCO on the eve of the International Mother Language Day 2008. He further added that the date of 21 February 2008, that of the ninth International Mother Language Day since 1999, has a special significance and provide a particularly appropriate deadline for the introduction of initiatives to promote languages.

Mother tongue is the language of nature, which is intimately related to the individual because it is structured and upheld by local laws of nature, which structure the physiology of the individual.

In recognition of the tremendous creativity involved in formulating a language, given that there are some 7,000 languages spoken amongst the planet's population, mother language has been acknowledged as an important and precious element of the cultural heritage and identity of a community. The date 21 February, corresponding to 8 Falgun 1359 in the Bangla calendar was chosen in homage to those "language martyrs" from Bangladesh who were shot on 21/22 February 1952, during public demonstrations to promote their mother language, Bangla, as a national language along with Urdu, in the then newly created Pakistan.

After hearing the heart-breaking dictation at a public meeting in Bangladesh on 1948, 21 March while the then Governor general of Pakistan Mohammed Ali Jinnah said that Urdu would be the only state language for both west and east Pakistan, the people of the East Pakistan (now Bangladesh, whose main language is Bengali) started protest against this.

A student meeting on February 21, 1952 called for a province-wide strike. But the government invoked Section 144 on 20 February. The student community at a meeting on the morning of 21 February agreed to continue with their protest but not to break the law of Section 144, but the police opened fire on them and killed the students along with other language martyrs- Abdul Jabbar, Rafiquddin Ahmed, Abul Barkat, Abdus Salam, Shafiur Rahman and others.

The origin of this Day is attributed to an organization known as "Mother Language Lovers of the World" in Canada along with some notable Non-Resident Bangladeshis, who proposed this idea to the United Nations and UNESCO and were told by UNESCO that this request should be presented through a Member State. The Government of Bangladesh obliged and 21 February was proclaimed the International Mother Language Day by UNESCO on November 17, 1999.

In Bangladesh, from 1953 until today, Feb. 21 has been observed as a martyrs' day. The memorial erected in their names has turned into a national meeting place. The love and respect that these martyrs had aroused for the Bengali mother tongue and culture eventually laid the foundation of the war of liberation of Bangladesh from Pakistan in 1971.

Languages are the most powerful instruments of preserving and developing the tangible and intangible heritage. All moves to promote the dissemination of mother tongues will serve not only to encourage linguistic diversity and multilingual education but also to develop fuller awareness of linguistic and cultural traditions throughout the world and to inspire solidarity based on understanding, tolerance and dialogue.

It is sad that languages are no longer being learned as mother-tongue by children. The belief that language diversity is healthy and necessary is often compared to biodiversity, and the idea that a wide array of living species is essential to the planet's well-being.

A language dies when there is nobody left to speak it. Within the space of a few generations, more than 50% of the 7,000 languages spoken in the world may disappear in the next century — that's 1,200 months from now. So this means that somewhere in the world, a language dies about every two weeks. However, less than a quarter of those languages are currently used in schools and in cyberspace, and most are used only sporadically. Thousands of languages – though mastered by those populations for whom it is the daily means of expression – are absent from education systems, the media, publishing and the public domain in general.

There are many reasons of disappearing languages— natural disasters (for instance, if an entire village of speakers is killed in a flood, or wiped out in a disease epidemic), social assimilation (speakers cease using their native language and adopt a more popular language in response to economic, cultural, or political pressures). Genocide, colonization, and forced language extinction are causes.

World body should act now as a matter of urgency to encourage and develop language policies that enable each linguistic community to use its first language, or mother tongue, as widely and as often as possible, including in education, while also mastering a national or regional language and an international language. It is important to promote languages as a tool for social integration or to explore the relationship between languages and the economy, languages and indigenous knowledge or languages and creation.

According to the French writer Stendhal, the first instrument of a people's genius is its mother language. Everything transits through language, which embodies national, cultural and sometimes religious identity for each person. It constitutes one of the fundamental dimensions of a human being. So mother languages should be promoted everywhere.

Re: [ALOCHONA] Re: Dr Yunus & Grameen Bank

Please do not compare apple and orange though both are fruit. Fazle Hossain Abed is the pioneer of working for rural people not for profit in Bangladesh. His organization BRAC started working among have-nots right on the day one after liberation. BRAC is an organization not for profit on the other hand Dr. Yonus started his so-called social enterprise business decades after BRAC.

Mr. Fazle Hossian Abed a great freedom fighter who along with some of his friend started working among on the breadline people since 1970 when then East Pakistan was struck by historical cyclone of 12th November. During the liberation war, Mr. Abed and his friends worked on the frontline helping the helpless refugees the entire nine months. After the liberation war ended when all freedom fighters returned home Fazle Hossian Abed and his friends did not, they started the real struggle of building a prosperous Bangladesh in light of spirit they attained during long nine months of liberation. Since then his relentless work lifted millions of rural off the cuff people to somewhat humane. The journey that started from Shalla of Sylhet still ongoing many parts of the world. Fazle Hossain Abad's disadvantage is his shyness in front of camera. He does not want him to be portrayed as the savior of poor of the poorest. Fazle Hossain Abed is a real social reformer not a darling poster child of capitalist west unlike Dr. Yunus. I will not say there is no blemish with BRAC or Fazle Hossain Abed, there may be many but comparing the vampire state of Dr. Yunus, his is none.

On the other hand, Dr. Yunus's Grameen Bank sets a pipeline to suck the blood of the poor of the poorest in the name of social enterprise. Dr. Yunus should get an OSCAR award for reenacting the Kabuliwala character from movie to real social life. Grameen's incredibly towering loan interest rate should be note worthy for documentation in Guinness Book of Record.

Dr. Yunus and his involvement with Grameen Phone are on record. He and his so-called social enterprise Grameen are involved with every move of Grameen's illegal VoIP quick moneymaking business. The Grameen is a registered trademark used by Dr. Yunus's Grameen only whether it is Grameen Check or Grameen phone. If you claim the milking cow is yours then you must not disclaim the stinky cow dung of the same cattle as not yours.

Thanks
Shamim Chowdhury
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Professor Mohammed Yunus and Fazle Hassan Abed are visionaries and
leaders of change not only in the context of Bangladesh but from a
global perspective. Only the people who have not objectively
researched enough will utter the ignorant (I am sorry but could not
find a better word to articulate myself) comments about their
contributions. I request these people to read some books (now
available in plenty) on the efforts of Grameen Bank and BRAC in
transforming the rural poverty situations in Bangladesh over the past
thirty years which had a directly positive impact on the overall
socio-economic environment of the entire country. Apart from the
empowerment of the women, eradication of grass roots poverty,
upgarding of rural health and education situation - the increase in
production in rice, vegetables and maize farming, poultry and cattle
farming, pissiculture, textiles and rural handicrafts due to the
involvement and coordiantion of the NGOs like Grameen Bank, BRAC and
others are simply mind boggling. The progress Bangladesh has made
over the past 30 years has lot to do with these individuals and
organizations. The reasons behind the higher interest rate and
service charges are also explained in details in the literature
published on these organizations - the rural poor are provided with
small loans with no securities or collaterals - there is a cost
involved in the process. One needs to have an analytical mind to
understand this ! Best regards, Shafqat

Folks,Please know the fact about Dr. Yunus and GB before jumping to
strong conclusion at. http://www.grameen-
info.org/bank/GBGlance.htmDr. Yunus is NOT an official of Grameen
Phone I found the following truth about Grameen Phone's involvement
with corrupt practice and its relation with Dr Yunus. All the
references are given at the end of this message. The issue is a bit
complex and I am not finding Dr. Yunus has anything to do with the
illegal activities committed by Grameen Phone. Dr. Yunus is
associated with Grameen Telecom - not with Grameen Phone. Actually,
Grameen Phone and Grameen Telecom are separate entity. Grameen Phone
is a for-profit organization while Grameen Telecom is a non-profit
organization and a unit of Grameen Bank. Grameen Phone's majority
share (62%) is owned by Telenor and the rest (38%) is owned by
Grameen Telecom. The important thing is that Dr. Yunus is NOT a part
of Grameen Phone's managemnet. In essence, a tense relation is going
on between Dr. Yunus and the management of Grameen Phone for quite
sometime. Dr. Yunus is fighting to obtain the majority shares of
Grameen Phone for Grameen Telecom per a verbal? contract made in the
past (according to Dr. Yunus). Bottomline, Dr. Yunus has nothing to
with the illegal acivities of the Grameen Phone. I collected most of
the info from the following links.http://www.grameen-

[ALOCHONA] 'FTA with India will make us a captive market’

'FTA with India will make us a captive market'

Indian Border securiy Force stand Guard : mmtimes.com

The Federation of Bangladesh Chambers of Commerce and Industries (FBCCI) organised the seminar on Regional Trade Arrangements (RTAs) in Asia-Pacific: Impact on Bangladesh in its conference centre in the city. Dr Zaidi Sattar, a senior Economist of World Bank, spoke as chief guest at the function.

A senior Government official yesterday warned against any free trade arrangement with India which might make Bangladesh a "captive market" of the neighbour."These are my personal views," Dr Hamidur Rashid, Director General (MEA) of the Foreign Ministry, said while presenting the keynote speech at a seminar. "FTA with India is likely to be "trade diversionary" for the Indian exporters," he added.

The WB economist termed Bangladesh economy as "highly protected" and suggested more tariff liberalisation for better international trade, while some business leaders said the country is loosing the race in the global trade due to "too much liberalisation without protection of local interests."

"Discrimination to the non-members is high in the RTAs," Dr Sattar said and alerted that Bangladesh should not be left out from trade facilities due to RTAs in various reasons.

He suggested Bangladesh to join regional trade pacts to be a partner in trade facilities.

He said RTAs are reducing the cost of industrialisation in many countries. But Bangladesh's export diversification is stumbling.

"Future of Bangladesh lies in export as only domestic market is not enough for its industrialisation. The country must put its house in order," he said.Dr Sattar said regionalism in global trade should be countered by multilateralism. However, the business leaders at the function urged for protection of local industries by discouraging import of industrial goods.

SM-al-Hossain, a business leader, said, "We are losing the race in global trade due to too much liberalisation."

He stressed capacity building in trade negations of private sector, trade bodies and government institutions for trade negations in the global arena so that national interest can be protected. The businessmen in the function demanded restructure of the FBCCI and enrich it with intellectual resources.

Business leader Monjur Ahmed suggested to develop negotiation capacity of NGOs, private sectors and the Government.

Dr Hamidur Rashid said, SAFTA would have a negligible effect on regional trade flows, he observed and said, "a free trade arrangement (FTA) with India may increase consumer surplus but is likely to have little on no impact on increasing Bangladesh's manufactured exports t0 India."

The welfare gains from RTAs with North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) and the European Union (EU) will be higher than the welfare gains on an RTA with the Association of South East Asian Nations (ASEAN), he said suggesting, Bangladesh must avoid being a "spoke."

Dr Mostafa Abid Khan, Joint Chief of Bangladesh Tariff Commission addressed the function as special guest. Syed Jamaluddin, Secretary General of FBCCI in his concluding remarks assured the business community of restructuring the apex body with skilled and resourceful manpower.

[mukto-mona] Re: Fwd: From Partha: my new article on gun violence on U.S. campuses

WRT: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/mukto-mona/message/46654

Jahed,

If there ever was any doubt that a whack job could get himself
qualifications that he could flaunt and then spout nonsense, Partha
Bannerjee's piece provides proof to the contrary. His knowledge of
French and German gun laws is execrable (I do business and shoot
competitively in both countries and am more than aware of their gun
laws) and he only strings words together hoping that they would
eventually make sense, something that cannot ever happen.

Suffice it to say that imbecilicity cannot ever be debated with
logic, nor ignorance with facts. If ever there was evidence that we
still do get the odd deranged individual sending mails in here, it is
in this "piece"

For the record, since Partha whines that the New York Times has
ignored his writing (they probably get hundreds of pompous loudmouths
sending junk in every day) my response to a detailed dscussion on
this subject is on the newspaper's website. The fact that this drum
beater in his own honor suggests that there was no talk about this in
the Times shows me that he has not bothered to as much as visit the
website before sending in his drivel.

There is a bumper sticker that suggests that people need to engage
their brains before putting their mouths in gear. Bumper sticker
wisdom is the most profound response that could be given to Dr Partha
Bannerjee as he is certain to comprehend little more.

There is deep concern in London about the future of Pakistan. This arises not just from the fear that unrest in the tribal areas on the Afghan frontier adds to the influence of the Taleban in Afghanistan, but from the links between Pakistan and terrorism in Britain.

Recently, the former deputy head of Britain's MI6 secret service, Nigel Inkster, who is now with the International Institute for Strategic Studies in London, highlighted British fears when he publicly named pro-Taleban commander Baitullah Mehsud, who comes from South Waziristan in Pakistan, as "public enemy number one".

The British hope is that elections can lead to greater stability in Pakistan. But there is recognition that elections by themselves are not enough. The Foreign Secretary David Miliband set out the formal British position in a speech on 12 February 2008.

"In Pakistan, the path to democracy begins with free and fair elections, but it needs deeper roots: an independent judiciary, a commitment from the army to stay out of politics, and devolution of powers to states and local government," he said.

Behind that formal expression of policy lies a hands-on approach that shows how deep the fear for Pakistan lies.Near panic set in among senior British officials last November when Gen Musharraf declared a state of emergency and sacked the Supreme Court.

Led by a former British High Commissioner to Pakistan, Mark Lyall Green, who is now political director of the Foreign Office, the British and US governments acted to try to unscramble Gen Musharraf's actions and put the country on the road to greater democracy.
This is seen as vital in combating the Islamists inside Pakistan.

Then there was the catastrophe of the assassination of Benazir Bhutto, whose return to Pakistan the British government had encouraged.Nobody in London expects Pakistan to settle down anytime soon.

One London-based observer remarked recently: "The best one can hope for is that Pakistan will muddle through as it has done in past crises, with continuing oscillations between military and civilian rule."

India and Pakistan have fought three wars, two of them over Kashmir, since both became independent from British rule in 1947.The nuclear-armed neighbours nearly went to war a fourth time in 2002.They began peace moves in 2004 but progress slowed after India blamed Pakistan for the 2006 Mumbai train blasts.

Travel and sport links have been restored since then but little progress has been made over Indian-administered Kashmir.Chaos and uncertainty in Pakistan appears to have slowed down the peace process anyway. In this context, India has mixed feelings about the upcoming elections in Pakistan. Indians were not upbeat about the elections in the first place.

National Security Adviser MK Narayanan summed up the establishment mood in a television interview before Benazir Bhutto's assassination when he said India was sceptical of a future Pakistani government under Ms Bhutto.

"Her track record is not necessarily something that would make us believe that she will follow to the letter and spirit of what she has said," Narayanan told a television interviewer.
Ms Bhutto had spoken about closing down terrorist camps, private militias and had hinted at giving Indian detectives access to some militant leaders who were wanted in India and allegedly living in Pakistan.

The establishment's scepticism is shared by many."As part of the historical record, there is not much to choose between civilian governments and military regimes in Pakistan when it comes to an amicable relationship with India," says analyst Harish Khare.

Analysts point to the fact that it was during Ms Bhutto's premiership that the situation in Kashmir took a turn for the worse. And it was during Nawaz Sharif's time in power that the Kargil conflict happened.

Although the American people are more focused on their nation's own presidential race, Washington's interest in - and concern about - Pakistan's elections can perhaps be gauged by the number of high-ranking military and intelligence officials it has despatched to Islamabad in recent weeks.

Among them were the top military officer in the US, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Adm Michael Mullen, CIA Director Michael Hayden and Deputy Secretary of State John Negroponte.

The stakes for the US in Monday's election are high: the US has backed President Pervez Musharraf since an alliance was forged in the wake of the 9/11 terror attacks and it views Pakistan as a vital ally in the self-declared war on terror and fight against al-Qaeda.

The political unrest linked to Musharraf's imposition of emergency rule last year and the assassination of Benazir Bhutto has dealt a blow to Washington's strategy in the region - the restoration of democracy in Pakistan in order to offer an alternative path, away from militancy and extremism.

The US is now looking to the elections to stabilise what it is all too aware is a nuclear-armed nation and ensure that Islamabad's collaboration in the fight against terror - to support which Washington has given more than $10bn in aid to Pakistan - continues.

But there is perhaps a sense of frustration in Washington about the limitations as to what the US can do to make that happen.

Richard Boucher, Assistant US Secretary of State, told the national security and foreign affairs panel of the US House of Representatives late last month that "if history was any guide", some fraud was to be expected in Pakistan's elections. However, he urged Congressmen not to give up on the idea that a new leadership could emerge from "a legitimate process" and said US embassy teams were doing what they could to monitor voting.

US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice told Congress she was concerned about the potential for election violence and voting irregularities. But, she added: "I believe that the Pakistani leadership understands that they have to have an election that inspires confidence in the Pakistani people that this is a step forward for democracy."

Jamaat-e-Islam Bangladesh: Profile of killers Golam Azam First
Amber-e-Jamaat of Bangladesh
The head (Ameer) of the collaborators (Rajakar) of Pakistani occupation
army and a heinous war criminal. The vile monster behind the genocide of
1971, rapes and molestation of 45,00,000 Bengali women and murder of
hundreds of pro Bangladesh intellectuals. In one of the photos recovered
from the archive of Pakistan military intelligence Golam Azam and his
top associate Motiur Rahman Nizami are seen handing the list of the
names of progressive Bangalee intellectuals over to the Pakistani
generals for elimination. The guru of extremist Islamic ideologies in
Bangladesh. The leader of 70,000 Razakars, Al-Badr and Al-Sams forces.
(New York Times, 30 July, 1971).

When the burden of the killing became too much for the army, the
Pakistanis enlisted and trained paramilitary units made up of
non-Bengali Muslims and Bengali collaborators from right-wing religious
parties. These paramilitary units, the al-Badr and al-Shams, worked as
informers and assassins to augment the military's gruesome task of
killing Bengalis. In June 1971 Sydney Schanberg reported on the
formation of these units:

In June 1971 Sydney Schanberg reported 'Throughout East Pakistan the
Army is training new paramilitary home guards or simply arming "loyal"
civilians, some of whom are formed into peace committees. Besides
Biharis and other non-Bengali, Urdu-speaking Moslems, the recruits
include the small minority of Bengali Moslems who have long supported
the army -- adherents of the right-wing religious parties such as the
Moslem League and Jamaat-e-Islami led by Golam Azam and Motiur Rahman
Nizami

These groups collectively known as the Razakars, the paramilitary units
spread terror throughout the Bengali population. With their local
knowledge, the Razakars were an invaluable tool in the Pakistani Army's
arsenal of genocide.'
However, In June the Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Sydney Schanberg
filed a number of eyewitness accounts from Bangladeshi towns for The New
York Times. In response, the Pakistan army expelled him from the country
on June 30, 1971.

Golam Azam, Rao Forman & Malek, discussing blue print for killing the
pro Bangladesh intellectuals

The Pakistan army, on the verge of defeat, was determined to wipe out
Bengali culture in one final act of barbarism. On December 14, 1971, the
Pakistan army unleashed the paramilitary units led by Jamaat-e-Islami
Al-Badr and Al-Shams to exterminate Bengali intellectuals. The goal was
to find and kill Bengali political thinkers, educators, scientists,
poets, doctors, lawyers, journalists and other intellectuals. The
al-Badr and al-Shams fanned out with lists of names to find and execute
the core of Bengali intellectuals. The intellectuals were arrested and
taken to Rayerbazar, a marshy area in Dhaka city.

There, they were gunned down with their eyes blindfolded and their hands
tied behind their backs. Jamaat-e-Islami and its leaders were in the
forefront of this planning and execution of Bengali intellectuals.
Al-Badr and Al-Shams systematically executed well over 200 of East
Pakistan's intellectuals and scholars. Professors, journalists, doctors,
artists, engineers, writers were rounded up, blindfolded, taken to
torture cells in Mirpur, Mohammadpur, Nakhalpara, Rajarbagh and other
locations in different sections of the city; and executed en masse in
the killing fields, most notably at Rayerbazar and Mirpur.

Several noted intellectuals who were killed from the time period of 25th
March to 16th December, 1971 in different parts of the country include
Dr. G. C. Dev (Philosopher, Professor at DU),Dr. Munir Chowdhury
(Litterateur, Dramatist, Professor at DU), Dr. Mofazzal Haider Chowdhury
(Litterateur, Professor at DU), Dr. Anawar Pasha (Litterateur, Professor
at DU), Dr. Fazle Rabbi (cardiologist), Dr. Alim Chowdhury
(opthalmologist), Shahidullah Kaisar (journalist), Nizamuddin Ahmed
(Reporter), Selina Parvin (reporter), Altaf Mahmud (lyricist and
musician), Dr. Hobibur Rahman (mathematician, Professor at RU), Dhiren
Dutt (politician), R. P. Saha (philanthropist), Lt. Col. Moazzem Hossain
(ex-soldier), Mamun Mahmood (Police Officer)and many others.

Noted writter Dr. Rashid Aksari stated in one of his writing "The
paramilitary force Al-Badr, which was formed in September 1971 under the
auspices of General Niazi, chief of the Eastern Command of the Pakistan
Army, was the instigator of that hideous massacre. Their objective was
to strike panic into the people by abduction and killing. It was the
military adviser to the so-called Governor, Major General Rao Forman Ali
who masterminded the whole conspiracy to extinguish the intellectuals
and the higher educated class. Had they had one week time more, they
would have killed all the Bengali intellectuals, which was a part of
their master plan. The Badr force was in fact a special terrorist
faction of the then Jamaat-e-Islami led by Moududi, Golam Azam, and
Abdur Rahim.

He continues to narrate "Immediately after submitting the killing
plan, Golam Azam, along with the chief of the Razakars, Mohammad Yunus,
and the liaison officer of the Peace Committee, Mahbubur Rahman Gurha,
went to see the training of the Razakar and Al-Badr at the Physical
Training College. From then on the Student Sangha all over the country
was transformed into Al-Badr and in the last week of November and first
half of December the list of the intellectuals was handed over to them
for abduction and persecution.

On December 4 began the imposed curfew and black out to pave the way for
abduction. The preparation for abduction of the intellectuals
extensively started from December 10. Amid curfew and black out, an
Al-Badr bus, stained with mud, picked up the listed intellectuals from
their residences. Then they were taken to the Al-Badr headquarter at
Mohammadpur Physical Training College for interrogation and persecution.
At dead of night they were taken to Rayerbazar brick field and killed.
The killing also took place at Mirpur.

Golam Azam (born 1922) the mother of all killer, is a Bangladeshi
political leader. He is also widely known as a war criminal who
collaborated with the Pakistan Army during the Bangladesh Liberation War
of 1971, particularly with regards to creating and managing the
vigilante Razakar and Al-Badr forces. Recently released unclassified
documents of the Pakistan government reiterate his role as a war
criminal. He refused to accept the independence of Bangladesh upon its
liberation on December 16th 1971, and was a permanent resident of
Pakistan until 1978, and maintained Pakistani citizenship until 1994.

Entering politics as a student leader at Dhaka University, Azam became
the secretary of the fundamentalist Jamaat-e-Islami Bangladesh in 1957.
Later, he became the Amber (president) of the Jamaat in East Pakistan in
1969. During the Bangladesh Liberation War of 1971, he was accused of
collaboration with the Pakistan Army, and was also accused of war
crimes.

To the last leg of nine months long war on receiving an urgent telegram
from Maududi, Golam Azam went to Lahore, on 22 November 1971, to see
him. He could not return to Bangladesh as his citizenship was revoked by
Sheikh Mujib government. Failing to return to Bangladesh the arch
criminal went to Mecca, ostensibly, for Hajj. From Saudi Arabia Go Azam
traveled Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Kuwait, Beirut and Libya to lobby against
Sheikh Mujib government and raise funds for counter revolution.

Following his extensive international PR activities Go Azam arrived in
London. From London he published the Jamati newspaper Daily Sangram on a
weekly basis. In 1974, the weekly Bichitra published a very interesting
report on Golam Azam's activities in London: In early 1974, Golam
Azam presented a blueprint of anti Bangladesh activities at a committee
meeting held in a house in East London. According to a reliable source
some Pakistani nationals were also present in that meeting.

The participants in that secret meeting were: AT Sadi, Toaha bin Habib,
Ali Hossain, Barrister Akhtar Uddin, Meher Ali and Dr Talukdar.
Pakistani citizen Mahmud Ali is one of the top Pakistanis present in
that meeting. The chair of the meeting Golam Azam said " to continue
our activities from London will be difficult. So someone has to go back
home. We ought to take risk-otherwise there will be no outcome. But if
you go home-you will have contacts. I have already contacted my people.
Everything is okay. Handing out a leaflet to all members present Golam
said it has to be distributed among the people of every village of
Bangladesh. People are with us.

According to some sources the said leaflet contained propaganda for a
proposed confederation with Pakistan. Others believed that it called for
an Islamic revolution organized using the network of mosques. Some
people were reported to have arrested near Dhaka carrying those
leaflets. Golam Azam also mentioned the proposed support for anti
Bangladesh activities from Pakistan and some other Middle Eastern
countries. (Like Zia) Golam Azam said `Money is not a problem'.

It was heard that Golam Azam collected 45,000,000 Reals from Saudi
Arabia for reconstructing the mosques of Bangladesh demolished during
the war. Shrewd Golam spent a large portion of that money to purchase a
house in Manchester in UK. Presently his son Mehedi Hasan is living in
that house. Golam' eldest son Kaifi Azmi is a senior officer in
Bangladesh Army and believed to be working as a link between ISI cell in
Bangladesh Army and Jamati Terrorist groups.

After the war, the Bangladesh government sought to remove the influence
of the fundamentalists and collaborators, and Golam Azam's citizenship
was cancelled. He chose to live in exile in Pakistan and England until
1978, when President Ziaur Rahman re-established multi-party democracy
and legalized the previously banned fundamentalist parties, and allowed
him to return to Bangladesh on a temporary visa.

Golam Azam became the unofficial Amber of the party while remaining in
the country illegally (though no attempt was made to restrain him and he
moved around openly), and his citizenship was restored in 1994 by a
decision of the Supreme Court of Bangladesh.

Ghulam Azam announced his retirement from active politics in late 2000.
He was succeeded by Motiur Rahman Nizami. Golam was Ameer of
Jamaat-e-Islami from 1969 to 2000 which is THIRTY ONE YEAR ( So called
Islamic Democracy) probably just to follow the foot step of his leader
Moududi who was also the ameer of Jamaat from its formation on 6 August
1941 till 1972 which is THIRTY ONE YEAR too.

Ghulam Azam's party, Jamaat-e-Islami, has been accused by a cross
section of political parties and secular organizations as a patron of
recently (2002-2006) rising militancy and behind a number of terrorist
bombings. Almost all of the recently arrested militants were alleged to
have links in the past to either the Jamaat or its student wing, the
Islami Chhatra Shibir some Bangladeshi newspapers such as The Daily
Star, Prothom Alo, Janakantha and Bhorer Kagoj describes Jamaat as who
favors destabilizations of mainstream politics so as to reap the
dividend from the subsequent vacuum.
