[ALOCHONA] Surge in unnatural deaths points to restiveness in society

Surge in unnatural deaths points to restiveness in society

THE steady surge in unnatural deaths, ranging from extrajudicial killing by the Rapid Action Battalion and other law enforcement agencies to lynching to murder to suicides to road traffic fatalities, in recent times has naturally touched off widespread concern and accompanied sense of insecurity. Perhaps, there is a bit of uneasiness as well; such uneasiness seemingly stems from the absence of credible, let alone convincing, explanations about a few of such deaths.

The recent incidents where three women tried to commit suicide after killing, or trying to kill, their children are pertinent examples. While all the three cases seem to have a common theme, i.e. conjugal complication, it does not comprehensively explain the actions of the three women, especially with regard to the killing of their children. Psychologists, according to a report front-paged in New Age on Monday, have sought to attribute these three incidents to increase in social pressure, personal instability and self-centricity. Intriguingly still, they are of the opinion that the first incident, which was widely covered by the media, might have instigated the women of the next two incidents to undertake similar actions. Whatever the cause or the context, these three incidents, according to one psychologist, send out 'a warning for society and should be given proper attention.' We could not agree more.

There seems to be an all-pervasive restiveness in society, which could very well be rooted in a widespread sense of uncertainty and insecurity. Worse even, there seems to be an increasing disregard for human life, not to speak of human dignity. People are killing and being killed at the slightest of provocation, for the most trivial of reasons. A major reason for such widespread restiveness and sense of insecurity and uncertainty could be the government's failure to inspire in the people confidence in its ability to protect them — individually and collectively. Such absence of faith seems to have been intensified by the many transgressions of people who are entrusted with the protection of safety and security of the people. Alleged incompetence and corruption in the law enforcement system aside, extrajudicial killing by the law enforcers has also contributed to the sustained erosion of public faith.

Worrying still, the disregard for the rule of law, human rights and human dignity shown by the law enforcers may have induced in some people the urge to take the law in their own hands, as the recent incidents of lynching in Gazipur tend to indicate. More than a dozen people were beaten to death by the mob on the suspicion that they might have been involved in robbery. Vigilantism, needless to say, runs counter to the very concept of human rights and the rule of law; lynching is no less extrajudicial than killing by law enforcers in the name of 'crossfire', 'encounter', etc.

Perhaps, there is some deep-rooted malaise in society and the sudden surge in unnatural deaths may be its symptoms. Perhaps, it is time for our society to look inward, and look hard.

Subject: [ALOCHONA] RMG owners want more security in Ramadan

Readymade garment factory owners on Thursday sought enhanced security for maintaining order in the export-oriented apparel sector during the month of Ramadan that begins next week.
A delegation of factory owners, led by the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association's president Abdus Salam Murshedy, voiced the demand at a meeting with home affairs minister Sahara Khatun after the weeklong labour unrest in the readymade garment factories in Dhaka and other places over the announcement of new wages for RMG workers.

The owners fear further demonstrations before the Eid, the biggest religious festival of the Muslims, for enhanced wages and festival bonuses.
'We will not allow anyone to take the law into his own hand any further. Stringent measures will be taken to ensure the security of the garment factories so that no one can create any disorder in the sector that contributes 80 per cent of the country's total export earnings,' Sahara Khatun told reporters after the meeting.

She claimed that some external forces were behind the weeklong labour unrest and clashes between workers and police after the announcement of the new wages for the RMG workers.
Some quarters are out to destabilise the government at a time when the trial process of the 1971 war crimes has begun, Sahara remarked.

The BGMEA's president said that the situation in the RMG sector has now returned to normalcy after a weeklong labour unrest which led to vandalism and clashes. 'We have sought enhanced security so that the law and order situation remains normal during the Ramadan in the readymade garment industries,' Murshedy told reporters.
He said the RMG factory owners had asked for precautions so that no one could create any disorder before the Eid-ul-Fitr over any issue.
'The home minister has assured us that security in the RMG industries would be enhanced during the Ramadan,' Murshedy added.
'I want to know who attacked the police during the labour unrest in Savar…Some people wearing lungis were seen during the clashes. The RMG factories do not allow any worker to wear lungi,' observed the home affairs minister, hinting that outsiders were involved in the violence.

Responding to a media report on a Jamaat leader's threat to the government, she said the government would face them with the support of the country's people.
The government on July 29 announced the new pay structure, fixing the monthly minimum wage for entry-level RMG workers at Tk 3,000 per month, which will come into effect from November 1. The RMG workers rejected the announced pay structure and started violent agitation in Dhaka city and other places after the announcement. They are demonstrating for a minimum monthly wage of Tk 5,000 and immediate implementation of the wage structure.

The police in Dhaka and other places are suing thousands of workers for vandalism and attacks on law enforcers.
The Sramik Karmachari Oikya Parishad, a combine of the labour rights bodies, on Tuesday urged the government to upwardly revise the new pay structure for the RMG workers and to implement it immediately.

The law enforcement agencies found some ruling party leaders' direct conversations with the BDR mutineers over mobile phone after examining the mobile phone call lists of the detained BDR jawans on February 25-26 at Peeklkhana.

The law enforcement agencies identified the names which are Home Minister Sahara Khatun, State Minister for Local Government and Rural Development (LGRD) and Cooperatives Jahangir Kabir Nanak, Awami League leader Mohiuddin Khan Alamgir, Dhamnondi-Hazaribag h MP Barrister Fazlee Noor Taposh and Mirza Azam.

The BDR mutineers held talks several times with the local MP Taposh.

The mutineers reportedly held talks with the leaders between 11:00 am to 3:00pm on February 25.

At least 820 BDR personnel and five civilians have been shown arrested to date for their alleged involvement in the mutiny.

Law enforcement agencies investigated the mobile numbers of more than 35 BDR personnel.

At least 10 BDR personnel had talked to the ruling party leaders over mobile phone. And 5 detained BDR personnel confessed to the law enforcement agencies that they held talks to one MP and another former MP about their demands.

Law enforcement agencies found that that DAD Touhid, Jawan Salim, Jawan Mofiz, Havilder Obaidul with other 10 BDR jawans held talks with the AL leaders.

Source said BDR Jawan Salim reportedly talked to MP Taposh at about 11: 00 am on the day of occurrence.

Investigation team found Nanak and Taposh mobile numbers from the Cell phone of Jawan Salim.

From 2:00 pm to 2:30 pm on 25 February DAD Touhid talks with the Home Minister Sahara Khatun. Touhid had also talk with Nanak, Mohiuddin Khan Alamgir and Mirza Azam over cell phone.

DAD Touhid also had talks with the Home Minister and the state minister for LGRD minister 20 to 25 times on 25 February at about 10 pm to 3pm.

Investigation officers of the BDR preferring mutiny anonymity told the New Nation that they found names of the AL leaders and BDR personnel after verification from the mobile phone operators.

But the AL leaders did not talk before the 25 February, he added.

Jawan Salim told the investigation officers that they took the Taposh's Mobile phone number from the detrained Torab Ali.

Earlier on Monday Criminal Investigation Department (CID) questioned Jamaat-e-Islami leader Barrister Abdur Razzak for more than three hours in connection with the February 25-26 massacre at BDR headquarters.

Nesarul Arif, police superintendent of the CID and in charge of the case, said yesterday that more people might be required to be questioned in the interest of the case.

A lot of big guns we may need to quiz as the case unfolds," Nesarul told reporters after grilling Jama'at-e-Islami leader Abdur Razzak at the CID headquarters.

Meanwhile, The CID again took 8 suspect BDR personnel to remand yesterday.

MP beats up Sharsha OC

Jessore, Aug 15 (bdnews24.com) – Sharsha police chief Enamul Haque has been severely beaten by ruling Awami League MP Sheikh Afil Uddin. The police official filed a general diary on Sunday afternoon with the police station over the incident against Afil and his cadre Musa Mahmud.

Enamul said that he went to Afil's office in the afternoon as Afil called him with the files of the murder case of one Abdul Hamid, a BNP activist. He said, "Afil slapped me and his man Musa beat me severely afterwards." "Afil threatened to kill me if I did not leave Sharsha," said Enamul.

Sub-inspector 'Asad', who was present during the beating, admitted that Afil beat Enamul. "Musa also tried to hit me as I protested. But I managed to leave the place with Enamul," said Asad.

The Jessore MP, however, denied beating the police official. He said, "I just asked Enamul why he had charged innocent Awami League men in the murder case." Jessore police superintendent Didar Ahmed visited the police station in the evening following the incident. He said, "I have heard about the incident. But I have not heard that it was a beating."
