[ALOCHONA] Re: From the ALOCHONA archive: some relevant topics

Fortunately many good people don't write like that anymore. Its not that they were wrong. They were right to be thoughtful. But, just as for the rest of the country, times have changed. Those days there were many people who theorised and intellectualised about the great issues of the day - without being overtly political. I was never one of them because I never understood why clever people would avoid talking about our harsh realities. Time, politics and politcians were not on their side and the our intellectuals must now confront realities or have it shoved in their face by everyone else.

This is Bangladesh. Everything is politicised and everything is about politics. Those who act as if this is not the case are part of the political establishment. Every single one of them. They are incapable of dissent or demanding reform within their own groups.

The salad says of Alochona were the baby days of Alochona. Apart from die hard AL and die hard BNP - the rest of the country is more fed up than ever before. This discontent seeps and oozes from every square inch of the non partisan electorate. The more we talk about confronting our political culture the better.

Rather than talk of the salad days of Alochona, Farida could talk about the salad days of AL....

I thank God that with every passing year poeple - even many intellectuals - put our harsh political realities at the front and center of their thoughts.

Intellectuals who prefer to ignore our political truths offend both their own intellect and their own political philosophies.

Bangladeshi intellectual: I like to talk about clever things while keeping quiet about murder, corruption and extortion committed by my own preferred party.

[ALOCHONA] The E.coli outbreak in Europe is BioWar

The E.coli outbreak in Europe is BioWar

Out of nowhere a strange new deadly disease has sprung up in Europe, causing an explosion of over 3,500 serious illnesses and 35 or more deaths in at least 10 European nations (and now 4 suspected cases in the U.S. - Ed.).  There are four scientific indications that this is a case of man-engineered Advanced Biowar, as well as strong circumstantial indications that this is a part of something much larger politically.

Scientifically, the four strong indications of an Advanced Biowar (genetically engineered recombination DNA) basis for this new outbreak are as follows:

(1) Multipoint release.  That is the disease has quickly come from nowhere and is in multiple locations almost overnight.  It is now in at least ten European nations.  In writing this article, I have had to change the numbers twice (total illnesses and deaths and nations involved) as the numbers are increasing almost hourly.

(2) Multi-drug resistance.   Chinese scientists, at the Shenzhen, China laboratory BGI (working with scientists at the University Medical Center of Hamberg-Eppendorf)  have confirmed that the new bacterium carries genes that make it resistant to several classes of antibiotics!  Patients often have bloody diarrhea, and many require intensive care including kidney dialysis.

(3) No cross contaminations.  There is no contamination with fecal matter (or possible related infections) as one might expect from a E.coli infection.  In fact, Germany, which has a large number of cases, has one of the best food safety and inspection programs on Earth.  Normally E.coli infections are spread by feces contaminating food and can also be spread from person to person via the faecal-oral route due to poor hygiene.  So far these do not appear to be primary vectors for the disease and in fact the primary vector is unknown at present.

(4)  Recombination of multiple strains/DNA found.  World Health Organization scientists have confirmed that genetic sequencing tests suggest the strain, E. coli O104:H4, is a never seen before combination/hybrid of two different E. coli bacteria.  Scientists at China's Beijing Genomics Institute say that the new strain is both highly infectious and toxic and that it is similar, but not the same as, a strain (EAEC 55989) isolated in the Central African Republic known to cause serious diarrhea.  The new O104:H4 E.coli strain contains the Shiga-like biotoxin from Enterohaemorrhagic E. coli which binds to and damages kidney cells and can cause potentially fatal HUS (haemolytic uraemic syndrome) disease, which causes serious liver damage.

This is the largest E.coli outbreak and the most deadly in known human history.  This new   enterohemorrhagic strain of the bacterium Escherichia coli (EHEC) can attack the blood, kidneys, liver and brain.  Close to one-third of the cases have developed full-blown HUS (haemolytic uraemic syndrome) disease which is very unusual.  Normally in E.coli outbreaks only10% of the cases develop HUS.  Also unusual is that most victims are adult women, where normally HUS affects more children then adults. The severe bloody diarrhea, with often related kidney, liver, brain and blood damage is somewhat similar to a HEMORRHAGIC fever such as Ebola.

The circumstantial indications that this is part of something much larger politically is that it fits into a pattern of political/economic/currency/medical/military/disaster/food shortages events and circumstances that are spreading an ever increasing level of chaos throughout the world.  I will be covering these interrelated topics in later posts.

[ALOCHONA] Disadvantages of electronic voting

Disadvantages of electronic voting

Why do we want to introduce e-voting in next general elections in Bangladesh? Will this ensure free and fair election under the current political environment in our country? The answer undoubtedly will be in the negative, writes Shama Obaed

Recently, there has been a debate going on regarding electronic voting, after the Election Commission mentioned a possible plan to introduce electronic voting system in the next general elections.  Our prime minister and other ministers of the present government sided with EC's decision and have spoken in favour of electronic voting. The main opposition party BNP has opposed the idea of e-voting. Although, in the process and 'excitement' of building 'Digital Bangladesh', it might seem a befitting idea to establish electronic voting system in our country, but  I truly think, all the responsible persons of the government and at the EC should seriously analyse the  severe disadvantages of e-voting, even before thinking about it as an option for our voting system. They should also seriously investigate why one of the largest democracies, like India and the US, have strongly given valid arguments against electronic voting.

What is actually electronic voting, also known as, e-voting?  E-voting is a term encompassing several different types of voting, embracing both electronic means of casting a vote, storing the voting record in some database, and electronic means of counting votes. According to 'E-voting: International developments and lessons learnt' written by T Buchsbaum, there are two main types of e-voting that can be identified.  One is e-voting, which is physically supervised by representatives of governmental or independent electoral authorities (for example electronic voting machines located at polling stations); and the other one is remote e-voting where voting is performed within the voter's sole influence, and is not physically supervised by representatives of governmental authorities (e.g. voting from one's personal computer, mobile phone, television via the internet (i-voting). The latter option is hardly possible in our country because of lack of accessibility to personal computers or televisions for every voter. The Election Commission may attempt to consider the first option, which is the electronic voting machines for voters, used for capturing the ballot. Electronic voting systems may use electronic ballots to store votes in the computer memory. Systems which use them exclusively are called DRE (direct recording electronic) voting systems. These systems record votes by means of a ballot display provided with mechanical or electro-optical components that can be activated by the voter, that processes data with computer software and that records voting data and ballot images in memory components. After the election, it produces a tabulation of the voting data stored in a removable memory component and as a printed copy. Please note that Electronic Voting machine, storage device and printers at the polling stations are a must for this type of system. These devices need power and power backups given the electricity and power condition of Bangladesh.  Also devices can fail and additional backups for the device have to be maintained. The security and hacking of the device and stored data are also serious concerns along with many others, which I will touch upon soon.

In a country like Bangladesh, where the literacy rate is 53 per cent and where computer literacy rate is even less, such electronic ballots are definitely unreasonable and illogical. Moreover, different international organisations have criticised the e-voting system, such as the UK-based Open Rights Group alleged that a lack of testing, inadequate audit procedures, and insufficient attention given to system or process design with electronic voting leaves elections open to error and fraud. In 2009, the Federal Constitutional Court of Germany found that when using voting machines the 'verification of the result must be possible by the citizen reliably and without any specialist knowledge of the subject.' The DRE (direct recording electronic) computers used till then did not fulfil that requirement.

I have mentioned in my writing, few disadvantages or cons of the e-voting system that should be considered seriously by all concerned  before taking any kind of random decision on e-voting. These are:

1)    Vulnerability to hacking: According to the Congressional Research Service of Election Reform and Electronic Voting Systems, vendors and election jurisdictions generally state that they do not transmit election results from precincts via the internet, but they may transmit them via a direct modem connection or Virtual Private Network (VPN). However, even this approach may be subject to attack via the internet, especially if encryption and verification are not sufficient. That is because telephone transmission systems are themselves increasingly connected to the internet and computers to which the receiving server may be connected, such as through a local area network (LAN), may have internet connections. So, using internet would be out of the question in case of Bangladesh where we continuously have history of suspicion over electoral fraud.

2)    Voter verified paper audit trails: All fully-electronic (touch screen, DRE, internet) voting systems are subject to the limitations and risks of computer technology. This includes the inability to detect the presence of hardware and/or software that could be used, deliberately or inadvertently, to alter election outcomes. According to Rebecca Mercuri, PhD, president, Notable Software, democratic elections require independent verification that all balloting choices have been recorded as intended and vote totals have been reliably and indisputably created from the same material examined by the voters. A Voter Verified Paper Ballot (VVPB) provides an auditable way to assure voters that their ballots will be available to be counted. Without VVPB there is no way to independently audit the election results.

3)    Susceptibility to fraud: Voting fraud is not either present everywhere or absent everywhere. Especially in our country, there have always been allegations of fraud by all the losing political parties. Fraud comes in degrees and increments. A malicious voting system created and distributed by one vendor to hundreds of thousands of polling booths, can systematically falsify millions of votes. Although some may believe that tampering with an electronic voting machine is extremely hard to do, computer scientists have tampered with machines to prove that it is quite easily done.  However, if people have access to the machines, and know how to work them, they can take the memory card out of the machine, which stores the votes, and in place they put their own memory card with a virus that can tamper with the votes. It is a fraud on a large scale and wholesale level.  Stuffing a ballot box, in contrast, works at a retail level. A tamperer, however malicious and skilled, can stuff only as many ballots as might plausibly be cast at the polling place, but a faulty and corrupted voting system (malicious DRE software) could affect far more votes.

4)    Accuracy in capturing voters' intent:  If a touch screen is used in the elections, the sensors in touch screen devices can be knocked out of alignment by shock and vibration that may occur during transport. Unless these sensors are realigned at the polling place prior to the start of voting, touch screen machines can misinterpret a voter's intent. For example, a voter might touch the part of the screen identified with candidate X, but candidate Y's would light up instead.

5)    Political ties of manufacturers: The present government's decision not to keep the provision of caretaker government and to hold next general election under a political government and the election commission, has made the attempt of using  e-voting system more unreasonable and unfair. Our election commission itself were also subject to considerable amount of criticism because of its controversial comments and actions during the emergency period after January 11 takeover, and also during the last 2008 general elections. Considering our political culture, it is undeniably a fact that any manufacturer or company hired for the e-voting system will tailor the e-voting machines according to the 'needs' of the current political party in power. So these machines will be subject to scrutiny, distrust and inquiry from all the other political parties in the country.

6)    Malicious software programming: Any computer software is basically generated from software programming and coding. And all these softwares could be tampered with by a computer programmer who knows the source code. Testing electronic voting systems for security problems, especially if they were intentionally introduced and concealed, is basically impossible. If malicious coding is inserted by programmers into commercial software that are triggered by obscure combinations of commands and keystrokes via the computer keyboard, then election results can change completely.

7)    Physical security of machines: Regarding physical hardware controls, many of the DRE (direct recording electronic voting machine) models under examination contained weaknesses in controls designed to protect the system. According to the USA Government Accountability office, all the locks on a particular DRE model were easily picked, and were all controlled by the same keys. Also a particular model of DRE was linked together with others to form a rudimentary network. If one of these machines were accidentally or intentionally unplugged from the others, voting functions on the other machines in the network would be disrupted. In addition, reviewers found that switches used to turn a DRE system on or off, as well as those used to close the polls on a particular DRE terminal, were not protected.

8)    Secure storage of cast votes: The votes that are cast using the electronic voting machines, are stored in a safe storage or space in the computer machine memory. But, Doug Jones, PhD, Professor of Computer Science at University of Iowa explained in his book, Secure Electronic Voting, 'For over a decade, all direct recording electronic machines have been required to contain redundant storage, but this redundant storage is not an independent record of the votes, because it is created by the same software that created the original record. As a result, the multiple files are of limited use to check the correctness of the software.'

The disadvantages mentioned above are a few among many other possible technical, manual and intentional errors in any kind of e-voting system. There are numerous examples of faulty systems in actual elections all over the world where the results or the elections were postponed. On October 30, 2006 the Dutch Minister of the Interior withdrew the license of 1187 voting machines from manufacturer Sdu NV, about 10 per cent of the total number to be used, because it was proven by the General Intelligence and Security Service that one could eavesdrop on voting from up to 40 meters using Van Eck phreaking (process of eavesdropping). The decision was forced by the Dutch grass roots organisation who demanded 'We do not trust voting computers.' During 2006 election of USA, in Miami, Hollywood and Fort Lauderdale, and Florida in October 2006, three votes intended to be recorded for Democratic candidates were displaying as cast for Republican. Election officials attributed it to calibration errors in the touch screen of the voting system. In Napa County, California, March 2, 2004, an improperly calibrated electronic scanner overlooked 6,692 absentee ballot votes. So, even the most advanced nations like United States of America where the infrastructure of power and computing is almost flawless had trouble using electronic voting machines and storage device. Can one imagine what happens when we try to use similar type of machines and devices in Bangladesh where having continuous power is a rare occasion and power failures are much more frequent with no supply of stable voltage!

So, why do we want to introduce e-voting in next general elections in Bangladesh? Will this ensure free and fair election under the current political environment in our country? The answer undoubtedly will be in the negative. The election commission can at best try these Electronic Voting Machines and supporting equipments and systems at a small scale in some affluent urban areas like Gulshan, in Dhaka first. But they are pushing for a grand scale adoption and trying to confuse journalists and the press with jargons like 'e-voting' vs 'electronic' voting. This article, hopefully, will clearly shed some light on the technicality of the issues involved in 'e-voting' machines and devices and the infrastructure required for the systems and its serious pitfalls, as well as, why the most advanced nations have tried and failed in using such systems.

Electoral fraud is illegal in any form or sense, but the disturbing part is electoral fraud injected in e-voting systems are often almost impossible to detect. That, along with other concerns outlined in this article, make the e-voting machines much more questionable. First and foremost, such political environment has to be created in our country where the general elections can be held under a caretaker government and all political parties can have faith on the Election Commission, before we think about bringing any kind of change in the conventional voting method. Hopefully our election commission will realise this and not play with the fate of the nation.

Uncertainty Looming Large
By Zoglul Husain

London 4 June 2011. With a government totally isolated from the people, a political uncertainty is now looming large in Bangladesh with unpredictable consequences - a situation, which has inevitably and predictably followed from the dire and disastrous conspiracy of the so-called 1/11 2007, an India-US (Bush) conspiracy with internal collaboration, and supported then by the US allies, including their rubber stamp, the UN. At present, however, apart from India, other foreign powers seem to be disassociating from the conspiracy as well as the Hasina government, which also transpires from the recent BNP claim that this government has no external friends except for India, and the claim may not be unfounded.

The last four years, since the 1/11 2007 conspiracy, have been nothing short of a hell, with the law and order now completely broken down and corruption utterly unbridled. Killings (judicial, extra-judicial, political and criminal), terror, grabbing, looting, severe oppression and brutal repression have become the order of the day. The ruling party, declaredly (by Ashraf, Sajeda, et al) the de facto BKSAL, backed by Delhi, have been allegedly commanding and controlling the judiciary, the executive, the parliament, the ACC, the EC and all the the other organs of the state, with the judiciary now being claimed to be the most corrupt of all, and so on and so forth. Politically, it is now a rough and rugged desert, where the people must look for an oasis and perhaps a new horizon.

From the beginning of 1/11 2007, there were people, who asserted that the aims of the conspiracy of 1/11 2007 were (i) to snatch our independence and sovereignty, (ii) to plunder our natural resources and (iii) to trample our national interest. A minus-two formula was devised by the conspirators to achieve their targets. Especially, India wanted a subservient Bangladesh, which it could plunder, control militarily and use its territory for military and commercial purposes with transit, corridor and connectivity to be used at its will, whenever and wherever, and finally they wanted to annex Bangladesh at an opportune moment of time or reduce it to the status of occupied Kashmir, Sikkim, Bhutan or Seven Sisters States.

It suited the India-US Neocons-Israel evil axis on its strategic aims of domination and plunder of the world. But their minus-two formula failed to materialize, apparently because of Khaleda's determination not to leave the country, even after the brutal tortures of her two sons, and more basically because of the people's quiet but powerful resistance to the two-year covert military rule of Moeen U. It was a diabolic tyrannical regime, during the tenure of which, hundreds of thousands of people were interned with alleged torture and extortions of money by Moeen U's operatives. The BNP was dealt a hammer blow, both externally and internally, the BAL was treated likewise, but only partially, and in the process, the political life of the country was made virtually paralysed through army actions.

The general public had to bear the brunt too, with hundreds of thousands of slum dwellers, hawkers, small shop owners of many towns and rural markets etc., oppressed and evicted without any alternative dwelling places or means of subsistence. When oppression and brutality were being perpetrated on such a grand scale, most of the NGOs of Bangladesh, Civil Society members, Human Rights workers, National and International Agencies for poverty alleviation and proponents of good governance, etc. kept mum!! With Bush's declaration of "You're either with us or against us" hanging over head internationally, most of these organisations obviously decided to be with Bush. It is the people who silently and valiantly struggled for the downtrodden humanity.

After failing in their minus-two scheme, the conspirators, struck a deal with Hasina as a second choice, and they engineered a rigged election on 29 December 2008, under military deployment, with pre-determined results mainly through ballot box stuffing. The BNP alleged that there were not many voters after mid-day, yet a very high turn out was recorded, while India-US (Bush) and their allies claimed that a free and fair election was held, and that this election was the best so far, and also that democracy was restored, etc. etc.! By comparison, perhaps according to them, even if there could be some doubts about the WMD, this purer-than-pure election had none of it, and this was the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth!!

The country, however, was destined to see worse days. Moeen U's most high handed abuses of law and order and the abuses of Human Rights and Democratic Rights have been surpassed by the incumbent Hasina government, whose only priority seems to be to facilitate Indian interests and Indian hegemony in Bangladesh. Hasina's MoU's with India are nothing but sell out of national interests and surrender of sovereignty. This is on top of India's snatching of river water and building of barrages and structures on 54 rivers since 1974 resulting in desertification of Bangladesh, brutal border killings of poor villagers for more than a decade, unequal business all through, achieving transit-corridor against people's wishes and against the country's security, ruthless smuggling, internal sabotage, etc. etc.

But resistance has now been growing. Many people are now giving vent to their unhappiness, disquiet and anger. The patriots seem to be organising the people for resistance.

The opposition have started calling for general strikes and for a mass uprising to bring the government down, as they have no trust in the government about holding a free and fair election, on top of the government's day to day repressions. There has developed a total breach of trust between the government and the opposition. Moeen U and Hasina have completely destroyed the trust of BNP and their allies, whatever was there left of it in the past. Now, the opposition is shaping up an one point agenda: Hasina must go and sooner the better for the country, as according to them, the government has failed in all respects. There are apprehensions of confrontation and clash. There are fears of vicious conspiracies, sabotage and even army action with outside inspiration and involvement.

On the other hand, India is also hell bent on not to let Bangladesh off its radar. Thus the situation has become grim and more uncertain than it would be in the normal circumstances. India's powerful international campaign about Bangladesh is that if the Awami League is not in power, then Bangladesh would become a taliban country with terrorism developing with risks for the whole world. Yet many believe that JMB in Bangladesh was created by India and HuJI-B by Israel to perform limited terrorist operations in order to impart a terrorist image on Bangladesh, so that India-Israel-US Neocons can achieve their vicious objectives in Bangladesh with international support. 1/11 2007 was such an objective.

May be these are the reasons why people are talking of the mass uprising of 1969 or the army-people uprising of 7 November 1975 or the anti-Ershad uprising of 1990, in the normal circumstances, but if India gets involved, by interference or meddling, then of another 1971. These are really uncertain times.

Many of the 2008 election allies of the government seem to have become uncertain of the government's ability to remain in power much longer, in spite of the campaign that the government would complete the term. Many of them have already made an assessment that the government has become totally isolated from the public. As the plunge in support for the government hits rock-bottom level, there are many in the ruling alliance, who have been expressing deep concern and fear for uncertain times, while some of them have even been warning, in quite unambiguous terms, of possible nerve-chilling situations in the near future. Though they neither have clarified what the fear is, nor is it clear if they are preparing to desert a sinking ship. The question bubbling up is: Is the government tottering?

A 5-party left-alliance within the ruling 14-party alliance, a component of the so-called great alliance, in a meeting in Rajshahi on 16 May 2011, bitterly criticised the govt for its all-round failure, and they refused to share any responsibility for it, accusing BAL of its go-it-alone policies on running the affairs (Ref: Amar Desh report, 17 May 2011, http://www.amardeshonline.com/pages/details/2011/05/17/81964). They severely criticised the break-down of law and order, the crises of electricity, gas and water, the sky-rocketing price hikes of daily necessities, the failure to stop the unbridled corruption, looting and grabbing, the share market crisis, etc., and said that the lives of the general public have become unbearable. The 5-parties are: the Workers' Party, JSD, NAP, Shamyabadi Dal and Gonotantri Party, and it is obvious that the parties are quite jittery.

Another ally of the govt, Kazi Zafar Ahmed, a former Prime Minister in President Ershad's govt and presently Senior Presidium Member of JP (Ershad), recently said that he was seeing ominous clouds in the political sky. He said, he didn't know whether it is a tsunami, a tornado or a cyclone, but he thinks some thing serious is going to happen. (Ref: Amar Desh report 21 April 2011: http://www.amardeshonline.com/pages/details/2011/04/21/77857).

Similarly, another close ally, JP (Manju) leader, Anwar Hossain Manju, a former minister in Ershad govt and in Hasina's first term govt, said recently, if an election were held tomorrow, then BAL would suffer a miserable defeat, but he warned, it is doubtful if election would be held as anarchy was rising. He said, he has some nerve-chilling information, which, if divulged, would make the sky about to fall. He said there are deliberate efforts to push the country to a failed state, according to a plan, and there could be attempts to snatch our independence!
(Ref: Anwar Hossain Manju's interview in the Bangladesh Pratidin 12 May 2011: http://www.bd-pratidin.com/?view=details&type=gold&data=Leather&pub_no=374&cat_id=1&menu_id=1&news_type_id=1&index=1)

Thus, according to the above, the government has failed miserably within two and a quarter years, and these allies have asserted that sinister clouds are ominously looming large in the political sky of Bangladesh.

A barrage of criticism against the govt came from former President and presently Bikalpa Dhara President Professor Badruddoza Chowdhury, Krishak Sramik Janata League President Abdul Kader Siddiqui, Progressive Democratic Party Chairman Dr. Ferdous Ahmed Quoreshi, Forward Party President Mostafa Amin, Gonoforum Presidium Member Commander Abdur Rauf, etc. in their joint meeting on 13 May 2011, when they warned of possible unexpected political developments and declared their intent to develop movement against the govt (Ref: Amar Desh report 14 May 2011:

Without making any further lists, it will suffice to say that the government is now isolated from the public and from their 2008 electoral allies and it is now wholly dependent on Delhi for its life support. Delhi has assured it of managing its survival support from the US and their allies. As Obama administration has not made any drastic changes to the policies of the immediate past, India'a assurance seems to be still working to a point. But it seems unlikely that if there is an uprising against the government, the US would go out of the way to defend it. In that case India's choices to defend it would also be limited, whatever sinister their motives may be.

The patriots in these uncertain times have the most important role to play: to safeguard the independence and sovereignty of the country and then develop it by defending Human Rights and Democratic Rights. For us, the patriots, there is a stark choice: do we want to remain an independent and sovereign country or we accept subjugation and become a state like the present Kashmir, Sikkim, Bhutan or Seven Sisters States. It is really no choice. We must unite, organise and mobilise all the patriots irrespective of political spectrum and irrespective of occupations, services and professions - all having overt or covert roles to play. If we fail to do that, then our independence would turn into a nightmare of subservience. It is, therefore, a do or die situation. We must think, we must act, we must break the grip of Indian hegemonism. We are determined and we certainly will win in the end.

[ALOCHONA] Indian analysis on political crisis in Bangladesh - Blame the Americans

Let Bangladesh Solve Its Own Political Issues

Chennai Centre for China Studies – June 4, 2011

Bhaskar Roy, C3S Paper No 801

BNP spokesperson Maruf Kamal Shoel informed the media in Dhaka (May 31) that the party's Chairperson Ms. Khaleda Zia, who had just returned from the USA, was told by US officials that unless the issue of Nobel Laureate Dr. Muhhamad Yunus was resolved honourably, Washington will suspend its Millennium Development Accounts (MDA) contribution to Bangladesh.

This is not the first time that the Americans have held out this threat to the Awami-League (AL) led government in the country. Earlier, the US ambassador to Dhaka, Jaames F. Moriarty, and visiting high ranking State Department officials held out the threat that removal of Dr. Md. Yunus from the head of the Grameen Bank of Bangladesh would adversely  impact  the relationship between the two countries.

Dr. Yunus is an eminent person and Bangladesh's first Nobel Prize winner. That is a great achievement, and the US voted for him.  Dr. Yunus's micro-financing project brought millions of poor Bangladeshis out of deep poverty, especially women.  In fact, this scheme really helped empower women in rural Bangladesh something which the conservative Islamists in the country like the Jamaat-e-Islami (JEI) and the Islami Oikyo Jote (IOJ) are riling against.  A case in point is their opposition to the women's development legislation.  The Islamists argue that this would lead to an explosion of "immoral" activities.  Their main objective is to keep women subjugated, a distortion of Islamic social laws and practise.

True, micro-financing  has a high cumulative interest rate, but no one has complained,  least of all the present government.  The point on which Dr. Yunus lost his case was that he had crossed the legal age limit for holding  the post of Director of the Grameen Bank.

For an outside observer, the government's move on Dr. Yunus may have been immature and hasty.  There appears to be political considerations involved and wrong advice from the AL advisors.  Yunus had risen to fame during the BNP-JEI government and would have been close to the BNP.  But that  does not appear to be the whole story.

A cable from the US consulate from Kolkata, India, to the State Department more than a year ago revealed by the Wikileaks, shows that the US was considering promoting Dr. Yunus as a third alternative in Bangladesh to sideline the two competing leaders, Sk. Hasina and Begum Khaleda Zia.  It is not known whether Prime Minister and President of the AL, Sk. Hasina had any inkling of this plan.  Given that Washington was not supporting Khaleda Zia, the US strategy was certainly against the interests of Sk. Hasina and the Awami League.  No political party, especially the AL, which has returned to power with a sweeping majority would let such a plan be executed, especially when Dr. Yunus had agreed to it as the American Consulate  cable said.

First, the US state department thought to build Yunus up as a strong political contender based on his popularity among the huge numbers at the lower end of the food chain population in Bangladesh.  Unlike some banana republics of Africa and Latin America, the people of Bangladesh are highly astute politically.  Dr. Yunus and his Grameen bank combine is just one institution in the country which had done good, but it is as much as a  corporation which also had a high profit motif.  It does not have an ideology, and is not a political party which enjoys the reputation of leading the nation.

Even the JEI, which has an ideology and  a committed vote bank, and has sunk deep roots even before the liberation of the country, failed to get enough parliamentary seats to make a major impact.  Unless, of course, plans had already been made to break the BNP and the AL to form a new party under Dr. Yunus.  Even that would not be a stable party but in US interest; it would be under Washington's firm control.  Even that has a question mark, if the Americans know Bangladesh's society and politics.  The grass-roots memory of the USA in Bangladesh is their support to Pakistan during the war of liberation.

Of course, the BNP appears to rejoicing over the US stand on Md. Yunus.  But Khaleda Zia and her acolytes in the BNP are pursuing a one-point programme to oust the AL from the government.  Then, they also do not know when the Americans will drop a hot potato.  And the BNP is a hot potato given its record of corruption, support to terrorism including international terrorists and high handedness during their rule.

The US must realise that a regime change or even trying to put a brand new regime in Bangladesh is fraught with danger.  The AL-led government can be faulted on many real, imaginary and concocted counts.  But under the conditions it has done well to rejuvenate the country, fight terrorism as a very high priority is not the highest, and is trying to stabilise the region.

American interference in changing the politics of Bangladesh can only destroy whatever has been consolidated.  It will take the country backwards, and the US may suffer from some of the fall outs.  One thing to consider is that foreign Islamic anti-American jihadists are still trying to get a foot-hold in Bangladesh in collaboration with the JEI and other Islamist groups, and the AL-led government is fighting them on a regular basis.  Certainly, Washington would not like a new terrorist haven to emerge?

Re: [ALOCHONA] Ziaur Rahman: the kind of statesman we need now

Mr. S Anwar,

On what logic and proof you have made your comments?

As you have not given any logic, and any supporting and publicly accessible and available authentic documents and proofs in favour of your remarks - none will accept your comments and remarks.

Please prove and support your comments with publicly accessible and available authentic documents and proofs, as I supported my comments with some publicly accessible and available authentic documents and proofs.

Otherwise your comments are unjustified and baseless (like all the overt and covert Jamat-BNP supporters do)

So, reply only if you can -----------------------------------

I politely and logically disagree with you.

If some people would have written or published anything against Bangabandhu or Sheikh Hasina - I would have treated them as 'fact' – if and as long as - he or she or any one on behalf of them had not protested about authenticity or genuinely those news or items and finally and historically established their objection.

I can cite many of such examples of protest, condemnation and even court case against someone!

A case was lodge against late Rintu (once I had some association in our college life with him along with many BCL workers-leaders like him) about his notorious book.

Later it was established in the Court of Bangladesh during last BNP-Jamat era, when a case was lodged by one of family member of Sheikh Hasina (husband of Sheikh Rehana) and after all stages of judicial process – Rintu was found guilty and punished and penalize (heavily, few crores) for his notorious book - full of bogus and fallacious items

Yes, when same or any other notable person write or tell against President Zia (like Maudud, Sayed Ali Ahsan, M R Akhtar Mukul, Muntasir Mamun, Gen Osmani, General Safiullah, Major Rafiq BU, Swadesh Roy and many more) - it becomes true (not like the Bible, as bible had changed many time) - when we see authenticity and genuineness of that news or item are not logically and authentically denied or protested by any of his people or supporters.

It is BNP and their leaders and supporters utmost duty to prove that - what Maudud had written in his books about VIP CHADABAZI of Zia and many other bad thing about Zia are "not" true and they should also take necessary ' strong ', ' exceptional ' and ' remarkable ' action against (thus proven liar and fraud like) Moudud.

As none of these had happened yet in last 25 years against Moudud (from when he started blaming Zia for many corruption and immoral activities).

So, we treat them as fact.

Rather, what we are observing that Moudud and other like him has become very close and valued to wife of Zia (in spite of his repeated DIGBAZI and serious allegation against Zia) Also like, SAKA, who phrased Khaleda Zia like a DOG!

So, we treat them as fact.

I am not telling Bangabandhu or Sheikh Hasina is a "FERESTA" (means he had committed no mistakes or crimes at all!).

But extent and number of their mistakes are very small than mistakes of any other leader of Bangladesh. We can compare it like the mistakes done by a 1st boy of the class to the mistakes done by a 3rd division holder of the same class.

Any 1st boy also generally does not get 100% marks (i.e. no mistakes). He may get mere 60% (or less, when none get 1st class) or as high as 99 % (very rare)  of the total marks (depends on the level and standard of education).

So, 1st boy also do make mistakes in exams!

Similarly a 3rd division holder may get 44.9% marks (maximum) and he has also done mistakes in same exam.

So, that 1st boy is not treated or evaluated or marked as that 3rd division holder!

Practically the 3rd division holder or common people never highlight the mistakes of the 1st boy

Or

Never say that they (the 1st boy and the 3rd division holder) are equal or "equivalent"

Politically - contribution, sacrifice, suffering, foresightedness and hence position and status of Bangabandhu in the history of Bangladesh is much much elevated than any other (corresponding) politicians-leaders of Bangladesh (or the than East Pakistan).

We should not utter any other name along with Bangabandhu, they (like Suhrawardy, Sher-e-Bangla, Bhasani, Tajuddin, Sayed Najrul, Comrade Moni Singh's name may come). They (with due respect) may be placed in lower tier than him (but they are at much higher than we common people).

Capt. Mansur Ali, Kamruzzaman, Khondakar Mustaq, Dr. Kamal, Prof. Muzaffar, Gen Osmani's name should come at later tire.

Then the name of Sirajul Alam khan, Sheikh  Moni, Razzak, Tofael, Comrade Farhad, A K Khandakar, Gen Rob. General Safiullah, General Zia, General Khaled Misharraf, Col Taher's name may come

We see the same thing in all sports ground. There is some level difference between 1st, 2nd and 3rd position in all "victory stand" at all sports field, to distinguish 1st, 2nd and 3rd position.

So, tell white as white and black as black.

Also think before you ink!

Dear Mr.mahboob Hossain

Are  these false allegation against Zia?
By his collegue and also by his wife's most depedent collegue Moudud and also by BNP minded medeia?

About Zia's corruption, please read the following mail posted by me.

General Zia started VIPCHADABAZI 1st time in Bangladesh.
He asked his 10 cabinet ministers to give him 3 lakh per month for "party".

You may think, this statement is not true or statement by some anti Zia politician /people

But  no,  bro,  no

It is written by that General Zia's higher-ranking cabinet member and later Khaleda-Ershad's most important ministerial colleague and now one of the closest and influential leaders (of Noakhali lobby) of Khaleda & BNP, most culprit and corrupt Moudud in one of his book.

This was disclosed and written by one of the meritorious journalist of Bangladesh and ex brilliant student Mr, Anisuzzaman Manik and it was published on the 22nd December 2009 in a sub-editorial column.

More than 17 montsh have passed, this report was published,

I thought either BNP will make some (LOK DHEKHANO) protest or will expel this culprit or corrupt Moudud from BNP and (will receive him again, later on, as Khaleda done to SAKA. SAKA was expelled from BNP when he compared Khaleda as a "dog" and later she welcomes him again in BNP and made him a BIG leader and minister.

But, alas, nothing happened to that culprit and corrupt Moudud nor any protest by BNP leaders or by BNP minded GIAN PAPEE (though  now Jamat-BNP has many media and few paid GIAN PAPEE too),

So, it is now again established that General Zia was not only cool brain killer but was also a corrupt and father of VIPCHADABAZI in our country, Bangladesh.

Please tell him to read the following news also

I mentioning below some of the many black records - facts about ex President late General Zia (based on some authentic documents). I have collected these from different newspapers only.

Zia and then his wife Khaleda Zia have only established Jamat -Shibir politically - economically - Said senior Journalist (anti Awami Legume minded) Mr. Foez Ahmed. For detail please read the news published in anti Awami League newspaper the Amadershomoy on 24.11.07

Thanks Nuruzzaman Vai for your nice input on culprit and corrupt Zia.

But, most unfortunately, one of the blogger, named Adil Mahmood had said that, none can raise any allegation of corruption and napitism about late Zia and he was least corrupt among all the Presidents (of substantial period) of Bangladesh. Indirectly he was tyrying to say that criminal General Zia was an honest (99.99 % false) both personally and politically.

But these are all utter lies.

I had challenged him based on the following statements, facts and documents - but no reply.

I have seen his younger brother (most probalble his name was Mizanur Rahman and had many years ago) used to work in in BCCI bank in Muscat Oman. Where he got the job mainly as a brother of President Zia. We all know that BCCI bank used to patronise all corrupt statesmen of the thirld and Muslim world, which was bankrupted in 1991-1992 for the huge corruption and miss-management.

Zia's another corrupt cousin was made acting MD of BIMAN (during the ending period of last Jamat –BNP era and he (Zia's corrupt cousin) and his BEAI Flight Engr Iskandar had "landed" (ruined) BIMAN !
Please also read the famous book of Dr. Minah Farah about criminal Zia.
She has openly challenged all Zia supporters (NaPaki, Jamat-BNP) about the reliability, accuracy, authenticity and honesty of the contents ofd her book!
Only few honest and sincere writers, like her, can claim such genuineness in boldly and openly!

Finally, see the personal (both characterwise and monitory) corruption of General Zia's wife (Falu and monitory corruption) and his two son's (billion dollar monitory corruption and multiple terrible bad character)

Any logical comments, arguments will be cordially welcome.

Nice article indeed ! I cannot imagine why Tarq and Khaleda did not

against Sheik Mujib by Zia but how narrow minded AL people bring
lot of false allegation against Zia. Both leaders has some limitations we should forgive them because they were human. If we love Bangladesh we need to remain united and for this we must stop talking against them. If we insult Bangabandhu Zia will be insulted and if we insult Zia Bangabandhu will be insulted. If we are brave and honest we have to accept this truth.
Many truth has come out from this article.

Once again I thank Mr. Rumi Ahmed for his nice write up.

Ziaur Rahman: the kind of statesman we need now

by Rumi Ahmed

Today is the 30th death anniversary of President Ziaur Rahman. This anniversary comes at a time when Zia, his image, contribution and his philosophy are under fiercest attack ever.

After decades of relentless attack on Zia, the war hero and Zia the statesman, after abysmal failure of Zia's party to portray him appropriately and effectively, it is no surprise if much of new generation Bangladeshis carry a faulty perception of Ziaur Rahman.

These days we talk a lot about bringing forward-looking youthfulness in our politics. And we also talk a lot about coming out of the slippery slope of hatred and vengeance and create a politics of reconciliation. We keep on hoping, hopelessly, for political leaders with courage and honesty.

Indeed, 35 years ago, it was Ziaur Rahman who brought all these traits together into the politics of Bangladesh and helped people of Bangladesh dream big.

When Zia went on live radio and declared "I hereby proclaim the independence of Bangladesh on behalf of our great national leader Bangabandhu…" he was only 34 years old. Then when he took over the helms of Bangladesh he was 39, and by the time he died leading Bangladesh through its most formative years, Zia was only 45.

Missing in all discussions on Zia is his outright bravery that shaped his and his family's life as well as shaped the fate of Bangladesh. At the age of 29, he won a military award of gallantry for his bravery during 1965 Indo-Pak war. On 25th March night, leaving his family at the mercy of murderous Pakistani forces, when he revolted and held his pistol at the head of his commanding officer Colonel Janjua – Zia knew very well that he only had one way out of this: fight and win the war.

A political settlement might have pardoned politicians, but for him and his men, a court martial and death penalty was inevitable. In this regard, he or other revolting military officers were not at the same ground with politicians involved with the war.

Five years later, on 3rd November 1975, when Zia was put under house arrest by Col. Shafaet Jamil's forces, death may have lurked much closer. Four days later, when Col Taher's Marxist indoctrinated murderous forces were chanting slogan, "Sepoy Sepoy bhai bhai, Officer er rokto chai (Sepoys are brethren – want blood of the officers), killing officers and their families indiscriminately, the whole military chain of command was at tatters, Zia — rather than confining himself to the safety of Army Chief's office protected by trusted soldiers — went to work. Again risking his life, all day he visited unit to unit to pacify the blood-thirsty rebels and with firm command disarmed the jawans, bringing them back under officers' control.

Rest of his life and leadership also contain examples of courage. Numerous coup attempts neither could isolate him from the people nor could slow him down.

Living at a time when politics in Bangladesh has become suffused with vengeance and communalism, and while we constantly lament lack of fresh intelligent faces in our politics, Zia's reconciliatory statesmanship seems like a remote phenomenon. With 15th August massacre and the bloody November at the backdrop, Zia created the biggest ever coalition to rebuild Bangladesh. Not only he included leftist, rightist, centrist political elements in his platform, he also relied heavily on fresh faces — young and bright professionals — in his nation building politics.

Unlike present day, Zia's political platform was not only for the career politicians, rich businessmen or retired generals or bureaucrats. Leading members of his party and government were the smartest physician, the smartest professor, the smartest accountant, the smartest barrister, the smartest editor and the wisest judge of that time.

He did not only focus on his own government and party; he understood fully the need and role of a strong opposition in a democracy. While he inherited a martial law imposed by the leaders of 15th August coup and constitutional one-party rule imposed by pre 15th August Awami League government of Bangabandhu — Zia made it his first priority to bring back multiparty democracy in Bangladesh. Rather than trying to permanently erase Awami League from Bangladesh, he took all the steps necessary to revamp Awami League from the ruins of BAKSAL.

Recently, Bangladesh went through an experimental under-disguise military rule to impose 'reform' within the main political parties of Bangladesh. Our political parties have always been managed in a dictatorial way by the leader. Despite all the false propaganda against him as a brutal dictator, Zia apparently was the first, if not the only leader to allow exercise of democracy within the party. Election of Shah Azizur Rahman as the leader of parliament and prime minister is a perfect example. Ziaur Rahman did not want Shah Aziz for the role owing to the latter's role in 1971. He wanted ex-NAP leader Moshiur Rahman Jadu Mia to become the leader of parliament and the prime minister.

When Jadu Mia passed away, he preferred a fresh face such as Dr Badruddoza Chowdhury or Saifur Rahman for the job. However, he also wanted the party's parliamentarians to choose their leader through a secret ballot, which the shrewd Shah Aziz managed to win. Zia could have ignored the wish of his MPs, but chose not to.

While we now see how petty partisanship trump over all other qualifications in government's day-to-day business, Zia always welcomed people who were not his direct supporters, including his political opponents. Zia's foreign minister was Professor Shamsul Haq, who served Zia till his death but never joined his party. Mr. M R Siddiqui — a prominent Awami League leader from Chittagong —refused to disown Awami League and remained president of Chittagong unit. Yet Zia, with a bipartisan spirit, appointed Mr. Siddiqui as his most vital ambassador, to the United States.

Zia's message is as relevant today as it was during his time. Read up any of his speeches, they will appear timely and pertinent. His speech defining Bangladeshi Nationalism remains the most inclusive and the most successful vision of our nationhood that was ever articulated by a Bangladeshi leader. His speeches about family planning, nuclear proliferation or climate change were decades ahead of their time in describing the challenges that would one day face us. In the field of diplomacy, he pioneered the friendly relations with countries of the Middle East that have become our most important labour markets and one of the mainstays of our economy.

TIME Magazine, in its June 8, 1981 issue, published a full-page report on the death of President Ziaur Rahman. The report ended with these sentences:

The slain Zia had been one of South Asia's most promising leaders, a man who lived modestly while others chose corruption, who searched tirelessly for solutions to his country's awesome poverty. He was also a fatalist. Once, reflecting on his service for Pakistan in the 1965 war with India over Kashmir, he observed: "There is no scientific explanation for a man to die or live. In front of me many people died, but I got a bonus of life." He used that bonus well, but last week it ran out.

I cannot imagine why Tarq and Khaleda did not
follow late president Zia. We may not support BNP or we may not
support AL but we should respect Bangabandhu and Zia for their
enormous contribution for this nation. I have never heard any word
against Sheik Mujib by Zia but how narrow minded AL people bring
lot of false allegation against Zia.

Rumi Ahmed for his nice write up.
and also Isha Khan for circulating it
