There have been international calls for Ms Suu Kyi's release

Burmese pro-democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi has been sentenced to an additional 18 months house arrest by a court in Rangoon.

Ms Suu Kyi, a Nobel peace laureate, was convicted of breaking the terms of her house arrest by allowing a US man into her lakeside home in May.

She was jailed for three years with hard labour, but this was commuted to house arrest, an official said.

The American national, John Yettaw, is also on trial.

Ms Suu Kyi had denied the charge but said she expected to be convicted.

Journalists had unexpectedly been allowed to enter the courtroom in Rangoon's Insein prison shortly before the sentence was announced.

Following the reading of Ms Suu Kyi's sentence there was a five-minute recess before the country's home minister entered the courtroom and read out a special order from Burma's military ruler Than Shwe.

The order said he was commuting the sentence and that it could be served under house arrest.

[ALOCHONA] Does Google Know Too Much About You?

Does Google Know Too Much About You?

Ian Paul

Do you trust Google? If you use its multitude of online services on a daily basis you might, but is that assumption wise? For some, Google is a wonderful company with a broad selection of useful online tools that make life easier, but for others Google is a looming, unregulated monster just waiting for the moment to drop the 'don't' from the company's unofficial motto, "Don't be evil."

google privacy

Artwork: Chip Taylor

Recently, at the Aspen Ideas Festival, WNYC talk show host Brian Lehrer asked Google CEO Eric Schmidt if Google's constantly growing importance to users in the United States and around the world meant that Google needed to be regulated as a utility by the Federal Government. The surprise wasn't in Schmidt's response (which was "no"), but the fact that everyone in the room laughed at Lehrer's suggestion.

But is it that funny? Google tracks your online behavior to deliver relevant advertising; the company inadvertently controls a large amount of what you see online through its search results; it's amassing the greatest library since Alexandria; it has a huge share of the online video market; and offers a wide range of services that bring more and more of your daily online habits into its online sphere. Heck, Google has even flirted with offline advertising..

But Google Wants to Do Even More.

google chrome

Earlier this week, Google announced it's jumping off its own servers and onto your desktop with its own operating system, Chrome OS. The move has prompted sharp reaction from privacy advocates, including the Electronic Frontier Foundation, the Center for Digital Democracy, the Center for Democracy and Technology, and the American Consumer Institute Center for Citizen Research.

Google has often been accused of poor privacy standards, and has been criticized over privacy many times. The search giant's entry into a market largely dominated by Windows has received applause for bringing more competition to the OS market, but a successful operating system could put even more information about your computing behavior into the hands of one company.

How serious could Google's online domination get? You tell me.

Google Has Your Day-to-Day Habits

Many people have a lot of information just sitting there on Google's servers including personal appointments (Calendar), correspondence (Gmail), work and personal documents (Google Docs) and online reading habits (Google Reader).

In 2007, PC World published this startling chart showing the privacy risks for your information. The basic problem was that all your information is just sitting there on Google's servers unencrypted, raising the risk of data loss, theft, or unauthorized access.

Never mind if a Google employee tries to get that information, but what if the government subpoenas Google? The company says it has a good faith belief that disclosure is reasonably necessary to satisfy an "enforceable governmental request" among other situations. Sure, the government could go after you for that same information stored on your own computer, but the feds could also get it from Google without you ever knowing, according to PC World's article "Is Google Too Big?"

Google Has Your Location

Several Google services can let you share with the world, and with Google's servers, where you're located right now. Are these handy tools? You bet. Nevertheless, you're letting a big corporation track where you are at any given moment.

My Location is a Google Maps tool available for mobile and now for desktop customers. This service shows where you are with a little blue dot on Google Maps, which can give you a sense of where you are in unfamiliar territory or provide you with directions to your destination. Google says it doesn't record your location in any way with My Location; however, you still have to send your location information to Google's servers to use the tool.

Latitude is a similar opt-in service to My Location, except it allows you to share locations between friends based on your mobile phone or desktop location. The service has a lot of granular controls to restrict information sharing to specific friends, which makes this a very flexible service. But unless you have told Google not to track you, the company has your most recent location on its servers.

Did you know that Google also ties information about your phone's battery life -- as well as other unspecified data -- to your Google account when you use Latitude? Google probably wants battery life information so it can tweak the Latitude program, but why is it tying that information to your personal Google account, and what is this "other information" Google's collecting about your phone?

Google's Got Your Voice

According to its privacy page on Google's Mobile Privacy page, the company says, "for products and services with voice recognition capabilities, we collect and store a copy of the voice commands you make to the product or service." No doubt Google does this to improve its voice recognition services, but still: Google has a copy of your voice on file.

Google Voice, the company's telephony service, also records your messages and your voicemail for you. That's a great service, and it's great that the company will transcribe your voicemail for you to deliver it via email of SMS.

It should be noted that all of the above services are opt-in, but if you so choose Google can have your voice, your personal voicemail messages, and a transcription of those messages on its servers.

Google's Censoring You (in China)

A controversial issue surrounding Google, and other information gatekeepers, like Yahoo! and Bing, is how they are behaving in China. All of these search engines routinely block access to particular subjects, like Tiananmen Square, at the request of the Chinese government. Of course, if a Chinese citizen can access Google.com they would have the unfettered access they can't enjoy on Google.cn.

The typical argument in favor of Google bowing to Chinese demands is that Google needs to comply in order to do business in the largest emerging market on the planet. But doesn't that logic suggest Google could turn around and do the same thing at the request of any government?

Google Wants Your Desktop with Chrome OS

google chrome

No one outside of Google has even seen Chrome OS yet, but it's already stirring concern with privacy advocates. That's because Google and its attitude toward privacy has been called into question many times. When Google introduced its Chrome Web browser, the company was criticized for recording your keystrokes in Chrome's search/address bar called the Omnibox, and that was before you even hit the enter key. Sure you could turn this setting off, but shouldn't it have been an opt-in function to begin with? Will Chrome OS be tracking your on- and offline behavior by default as well?

Google Privacy Policies Today

Google does say that your privacy is important to the company, and it has made some steps in this area. Google says it keeps only 18 months of search data, and that data is completely anonymous. The company is also careful to point to its privacy policy for every single Google product on its Web pages. But it's important to note that many of Google's privacy measures were introduced only after public outcry, including a request to make links to its privacy policy more visible.

In fact, you could argue that Google is fundamentally reluctant to respect privacy in preference of innovation. According to a blog post entitled "Another step to protect user privacy," the company said, "Although [anonymizing search server logs] was good for privacy, it was a difficult decision because the routine server log data we collect has always been a critical ingredient of innovation."

That's a fair argument, since a lot can be learned from how people behave on the Web. If you combine a large body of data about user behavior with Google's massive computing power, you can see how Google could get an excellent sense of how to shape its products to meet user needs.

But then again, companies were innovating with focus groups and opt-in monitoring programs for decades and they fared pretty well. Personally, I'd prefer that Google and other online companies stopped tracking my cyber-behavior even if that did mean we'd see less innovation from these companies.

Google has a lot of handy services, but as the company gains more and more information from its users, those users may raise even more questions about how big Google should be allowed to get, and whether the government needs to step in and strictly regulate how Google's overwhelming amount of information is used.

Now if you'll excuse me, I've got to plug next week's schedule into my Google Calendar, get caught up with my Gmail, catch up on my blog reading with Google Reader and then watch a few of my favorite videos on YouTube.

[ALOCHONA] Seventy-Five Change: Bangladesh is the Beneficiary

Seventy-Five Change: Bangladesh is the Beneficiary

Dr.M.T. Hussain

The Law Minister of present Bangladesh Government has said recently that the Law Minister of the past BNP Jote Government had been a beneficiary of August 1975 change of the government in Dhaka. Was that so? Was he alone the beneficiary? None else? Or were there only a few with him? Or the whole nation had been and continues to be the real beneficiary of the historic change?

1. Oppression of pre-August 1975 Government
Three and a half decades have passed by since the August 1975 change. A new generation has come up in their full youth as of now. These millions of youthful energy are very little aware of the pre-1975 facts of people's lives, their miseries, fears and oppression let loose on them by the government then in power in Bangladesh. In addition, propaganda galore has constantly been pouring in all ears that the man-god had an unwelcome fall in mid August 1975. In reality, the contrary had been true.

(i) The absolute dictator trampled democracy
The man-god although had all lofty promises previously for democracy, taking on to the State power in January 1972, soon turned a dictator of the worst kind, first without having declared democracy formally banned but then in January 1975 banned all political parties and kept the only one of his own with a little changed name BAKSAL further strengthening his absolute dictatorial power.

(ii) Corruption and looting of State property
The party leaders and cadres of all levels at the behest of the man-god stooped too low to grab the public and state properties whenever and wherever they could lay their hands on, as if they had acquired all rights to do so as booty of the victory of the independence war of 1971. All law enforcing agencies, not even the army could do anything to stop looting public properties. Smuggling along the 'friendly' Indian border of nearly 42,00 km had been their exclusive privilege that broke the structure of the economy of the country in quick succession so much so that in about two years of the rule of the man-god's man made famine (Nobel Laureate Amartya Sen) took lives of thousands (27,000 government figure, few hundred thousands unofficial count) in 1974.
(iii) Rakkhi Bahini's torture and killing of all political opponents

From the very inception of the man-god's rule in early 1972, he did raise a Para military force by new recruits from specially motivated youths under the tutelage of the Indian central intelligence agency, the R&AW, outside the control and framework of the Constitution, as a Gestapo style armed force and in parallel to the regular armed force of the country, who were employed at exclusive will of the man-god to capture, punish and kill all the imaginary political opponents, particularly the youths of the country having political views other than the man-god. The figures killed alone by this Bahini in three and a half years until mid August 1975, according to an estimate, rose to about 40,000. Many of such killings had not only been directly ordered by the leader but also shamelessly boasted for as one for example was of killing on the 2nd January 1975 of brilliant Engineer Seraj Sikder, the chief of the Purba Bangla Sarbahara party, a left leaning political party. The boasting immediately after Sikder's killing went in Bengali verbatim, "KOTHAI AJ SERAJ SIKDER (Where is today Seraj Sikder)' at the floor of the otherwise sacred Parliament!

(iv) Private Hoodlums
The man-god had other private hoodlums privately armed for capture, torture and killing at will anyone taken to be imaginary foes of political groups other than the man-god's own.. Such hoodlum forces amazingly and unbelievably had in the main even been organized by his eldest son Sheikh Kamal, nephew Moni and a very dear one SP (Dhaka) Mahbub. Their casualties remained unaccounted for as ever.

2. Reliefs and Rejoice on the 15th August 1975 from the Inhuman Oppression
The people had a relief and rejoiced the fall of the man-god on the 15th August 1975 are well on record. The joy had reasons, (i) prices of essential commodities shot down to people's purchasing power and relief that went sky high and went on higher and higher following unexpectedly the 1971 independence mainly due to man-god's own men fleecing the economy, on the one hand, and exploitation of the evil opportunities by Indian big economy and interests, on the other, in connivance of the man-god's own henchmen. (ii) The country and the people felt immensely relieved at the end of the absolute dictatorship and revert back to pluralism and multi-party democratic government the people had long struggled for to establish in the past. (iii)

The overwhelming majority people were also elated that the change of August 1975 promised for return to the Islamic value system that the post 1971 government went on to eradicate in the excuse for 'secularism' that India had imposed in the 1972 Constitution having had no prior clear mandate of the people of the country. (iv) The people felt further relieved when the unconstitutional and killer Rakkhi Bahini was disbanded and some the selected few absorbed into the regular army and the private hoodlums groups naturally disappeared from the social scene immediately after the 15th August change.

3. The Fifth Amendment of the Constitution adopted in April 1979, had just formalized the aspirations of the people of the 15th August 1975 change. The country runs since then on until this time in 2009 what the heroic change right then initiated.

4. That Bangladesh did not go back to the lone party BAKSAL of the pre 15th August nightmare over the last 35 years and certainly do not wish to go back to those dark days are solid proofs that the whole country and not any individual is the big beneficiary of that historic and heroic change.

Re: [ALOCHONA] The Fatal Attraction.

I was talking to a Greek orthodox priest this morning.
He said that if you really think it's not the Christean or Muslim issue.
Only god will decide who will go to haven depending on your deed.
He added that prophet Mohammad (peace be upon him) said the same thing.
Instead of bashing other people it's better to see yourself on the mirror.

My 76 years old elder brother expressed his disappointment after viewing some events connected to the so called Muslim Heritage Week in Toronto. He complained why the Muslims find pleasure in the past only while disregarding the importance of the contemporary times in which they live. This tendency to seek happiness in the bygone days is a dramatic turn in the Muslim psyche. This is ridiculous that non Arab Muslims disregard their own culture by shamelessly embracing pagan Arab cultures.

While discussing the contemporary mindset of the some ultra zealous Islamic ideologists with a friend of mine who is a very energetic supporter of this growing platform, I lamented them for their fatal attraction to the pre medieval ages when Islam was used to discipline the pagan Arabs. Many people really get angry when I proclaim that by accepting a foreign faith one should not succumb to the culture of that faith because faith is basically a spirit not a culture. When Islam was shipped to the non Arab cultures the missionaries made it a package deal that the culture associated with Islam, which is a wholesome Arab culture, was also an integral part of this new faith. This worked because they made a vicious brew of faith and fear. The ultra reactionary Wahabi brand of Islam is vicious because the ideology imposes the Arab tribal culture rooted in the early middle ages which does not fit into other cultures. This so called Islamic renaissance which I call degeneration in word and spirit is a cumulative consequence of a Muslim failure to accept the competitive and complex 21st century. The sharia laws are nothing but a brew of conservative Islam and tribal laws which is totally out of tune with the contemporary times. The tendency to turn the wheel of time in the name of faith is sign of clear failure to face the realities of our times. This scourge of Islamic extremism which has blackened the face of the general Muslims can't be stopped unless the Muslims do not come out from the hallucination of the past.

A vast number of Muslims gave in to this frustration and ignorance and are looking for some guidance in the dark alleys of the 7th century Arabian culture rather than their own tumultuous times. They are more prone to abreast the bygone days by making more mosques, appreciating hijab, niqab and showing stupid approval for the movements like Taliban. This degeneration of spirit is driving the entire Muslim world into an abyss and creating further gap between the present and future thereby putting the posterity in an uncharted world. This plague of ignorance is so deafening that no logic works here, no pragmatic sense can make inroads. A pervasive culture of fear reigns supreme and a sense of utter resignation have taken control of the entire Muslim psyche. The different Muslim nations around the world have been held in captivity and they are gradually giving in to the architects of the fear mongers who are not ready to see reason and realities. This failure to report to the reason and the blind conviction that this dangerous tendency to hug the past will bring emancipation from the present morass is ominous. For me its outrageous to see that many Muslims who live in the west and made it their home actively subscribe to this degenerating ideology .They actively promote these ideas which emboldens the disruptive forces of Islam around the world. Islam as a faith has already lost its credibility and attractions in the non Muslim world and this should be a wake up call for any enlightened person of the faith to restore its respect by acting judiciously and reasonably. It's matter of great shame that living in the western nations enjoying their fruits of prosperity and freedom one would like to harm them. This must be considered as an act of treachery, dishonesty and above all irreligious.

Akbar Hussain

[ALOCHONA] China should break up India into 20-30 states: Chinese strategist

China should break up India into 20-30 states: Chinese strategist

IANS – August 10, 2009

New Delhi, Aug 10 (IANS) In an article likely to raise Indian hackles, a Chinese strategist contends that Beijing should break up India into 20-30 independent states with the help of 'friendly countries' like Pakistan, Bangladesh, Nepal and Bhutan.

The publication of the article nearly coincided with the 13th round of India-China border talks that ended in New Delhi Saturday on a positive note, with Beijing emphasizing the need to build strategic trust and elevate strategic partnership to a new level to include coordination on global issues.

Written in Chinese, the article, 'If China takes a little action, the so-called Great Indian Federation can be broken up,' is published in the new edition of the website of the China International Institute for Strategic Studies (CIISS), an influential think tank that advises Beijing on global and strategic issues.

According to D.S. Rajan, director of the Chennai Centre for China Studies, Chennai, Zhan Lue, the author of the article, argues that the 'so-called' Indian nation cannot be considered as one having existed in history as it relies primarily on Hindu religion for unity.

The article says that India could only be termed a 'Hindu religious state' that is based on caste exploitation and which is coming in the way of modernisation.

The writer goes on to argue that with these caste cleavages in mind, China in its own interest and the progress of whole of Asia should join forces with 'different nationalities' like Assamese, Tamils and Kashmiris and support them in establishing independent nation states of their own.

In particular, the article asks Beijing to support the United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA), a militant separatist group in the Indian northeast, to it achieve independence for Assam from India.

Furthermore, the article suggests that China can give political support to Bangladesh to encourage ethnic Bengalis in India get rid of 'Indian control' and unite with Bangladesh as one Bengali nation.

If this is not possible, the creation of at least another free Bengali nation state as a friendly neighbour of Bangladesh would be desirable for the purpose of weakening India's expansion and threat aimed at forming a 'unified South Asia', the article argues.

The article recommends India's break up into 20-30 nation-states like in Europe and contends that if the consciousness of 'nationalities' in India could be aroused, social reforms in South Asia can be achieved, the caste system can be eradicated and the region can march towards prosperity.

The Chinese strategist suggests that to split India, China can seek support of friendly countries including Pakistan, Nepal and Bhutan.

China should encourage Bangladesh to give a push to the independence of West Bengal and recover the 90,000 sq km territory in Arunachal Pradesh, which China calls Southern Tibet, says Rajan who has analysed the article for the Chennai-based think tank.

'The write-up could not have been published without the permission of the Chinese authorities, but it is sure that Beijing will wash its hands out of this if the matter is taken up by New Delhi,' says Rajan.

'It has generally been seen that China is speaking in two voices - its diplomatic interlocutors have always shown understanding in their dealings with their Indian counterparts, but its media is pouring venom on India,' says Rajan.

Which one to believe is a question confronting the public opinion and even policy makers in India, Rajan says, adding that ignoring such an article will 'prove to be costly' for India.

[ALOCHONA] Iran's Gas for BD?

Please read the news below. Pakistan is going through with the Iranian Natural Gas Pipeline deal despite that she has plenty of Gas for normal use. Pakistan wants more Gas to save billions of dollars to spent on import of Petrol by converting it for Automoblie use plus to produce Electricity.
.
After this Iranian Gas Pipeline would be entering India through Pakistan because India is the one that had orginally wanted that Pipeline started. After it reaches India, Bangladesh should request Iran to extend the same Pipeline up to B.D.
.
If Russian Natural Gas Pipeline can be found in almost in every European Country, we can have plenty of Natural Gas through Iran because Iran has 2nd largest Gas Reserves of the world, 15%. Russia has the largest, 27.6% of the World. India 0.61%, Pakistan 0.44% and B.D. 0.08%.

-------------------------
Iran, Pakistan to finalize technical framework of Gas Pipeline
.
TEHRAN, Aug. 10 (MNA) -- Iranian and Pakistani experts are going to start a five-day round of talks in Islamabad today to settle technical terms of the gas transfer deal to Pakistan.

The Mehr News Agency quoted Hojjatollah Ghanimifard, the Iranian oil minister''s special representative to the pipeline talks, as saying, "The two sides reached final agreement on the gas transfer deal in May and consented to finalize the related technical framework in three months thereafter."

"Based on the agreement, the Iranian side should begin pumping natural gas into the pipeline four and a half year after signing the contract."

The Iranian official also confirmed that the two sides along with Russian Gazprom Company will come together in Tehran to negotiate on construction of the pipeline.

"The Pakistani side announced its readiness to participate in the trilateral meeting," Ghanimifard said.

Ghanimifard had previously emphasized that India still has an option to join the project, although the country has so far not been included in the gas pipeline project.

Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and his Pakistani counterpart Asif Ali Zardari inked a $7.5 billion agreement in Tehran on May 23, finalizing the deal to transfer gas from Iran to Pakistan, Press TV reported.

According to the deal, Iran will initially transfer 30 million cubic meters of gas per day to Pakistan, but will eventually increase the gas transfer to 60 million cubic meters per day.

Iran, Pakistan, and India conceptualized a gas pipeline project in 1990, dubbed as the IPI - or peace – pipeline to help boost peace and security in the region.

Negotiations over the project were initiated in 1994 between the three countries but there were obstacles to closing the three-way deal due to tension between India and Pakistan, according to IRNA.

India has not participated in the last several rounds of talks, but Iran has encouraged India to rejoin the process.

The IPI gas pipeline is a proposed 2,775-kilometer pipeline to deliver natural gas from Iran to Pakistan and India.

The project is expected to greatly benefit India and Pakistan, which do not have sufficient natural gas to meet their rapidly increasing domestic demand for energy.

Pakistan -- facing an energy crisis -- plans to generate 4,600 megawatts of electricity with Iranian natural gas.

While Pakistan has been facing an electricity shortfall of more than 3,000 megawatts leading to frequent and long blackouts in the country, it has been under pressure from Washington to abandon the deal.

Parliament should nod gas deal before Sep. 5: Aasim Hussain

Aasim Hussain former advisor to Pakistani Prime Minister on Petroleum has urged government to present Iran-Pakistan gas pipeline project in the parliament for final approval soon, otherwise Pakistan may stand deprived of this project after September 5 in terms of gas sale, purchase accord.

According to Online Sunday, Former petroleum advisor believes that Pak-Iran gas pipeline project was of vital importance to meet the energy requirements of Pakistan.

"Pakistan could save 5 million dollars on daily basis in the event of completion of this project. However the project could be shelved for ever if Pakistan and Iran failed to seek final approval from their respective parliaments in this respect till September 5," he cautioned.

He pointed out certain elements were opposing Pak-Iran gas pipeline project but government would have to materialize this project in the supreme national interest at every cost.

[ALOCHONA] The Fatal Attraction.

[ALOCHONA] Re: Generals Moinul Hossain Chowdury and Shahedul Anam on recalling of sacked military officers

There is another solution.  Since BNP-Jamaat anti-liberation administration sacked army officers who had relationship with AL politicians, and Dictators Zia and Ershad executed so many freedom fighter Army officers, the current AL administration should consider sacking every Army officer (not just a few) who has any connection to BNP-Jamaat.  It will be 100% fair and there will be no more controversy (right?)!!!
