Re: [ALOCHONA] AL will not join to dialogue without Hasina

The turmoil and confusion that brought CTG in power.

Another turmoil is probably setting us for army rule for next 10 years.

people of Bangladesh doesn't care who is in power as long as some

one can keep some sort of stability. We have seen these before, Bangladesh didn't explode when Shaikh Mujib was killed, neither country didn't come to a stop when Ziaur Rahman died We need institution that can survive personality cult that is continuing for many years. All parties should come together and get an election so that  army don't get the chance to exploit the situation on the ground.

Future of Bangladesh should come first, nothing else.

BREAKING NEWS
AL decides to skip dialogue without Hasina
Tue, May 27th, 2008 9:35 pm BdST
Dhaka, May 27 (bdnews24.com) ¡¦The Awami League on Tuesday decided not to join government dialogue without party chief Sheikh Hasina, a move likely to put a question mark on ongoing political talks.

The decision on boycott came from a meeting of the Awami League Central Working Committee at the party's Dhanmondi office.

The ALCWC meeting has been adjourned until Wednesday, acting AL president Zillur Rahman told reporters.

A major announcement about a movement for the release of the former prime minister, now behind bars on charges of corruption, is expected to come from Wednesday's meeting.

The ALCWC meeting also endorsed most recommendations made by district AL leaders at the party's crucial extended meeting on Monday.

"The meeting has approved the speeches of the district leaders, showing honour to them. The district leaders said there would be no dialogue and no election without Sheikh Hasina," Zillur said.

"We have also decided that we will not go to dialogue without Sheikh Hasina. If we go to dialogue we will do so under her leadership. And it is Sheikh Hasina who will name those who will participate in it," he said.

The ALCWC meeting will resume at 11am Wednesday.

Re: [ALOCHONA] CTG: Who boycotts elections is not important

Why bother about the large corrupt political parties-Awami League and BNP. The CTG has created poddle parties under 3rd Grade leaders Ferdous Qureshi and Gen. Ibrahim. Ershad is also on the boat. Little Islamic Parties will join. Boycotts by the large parties are good for the CTG because then they can enjoy the park and previledges for a long time.

Who boycotts dialogue is not important, says Hossain Zillur
United News of Bangladesh . Dhaka 30/5/08
Commerce adviser Hossain Zillur Rahman Thursday tried to downplay the decisions of the Awami League and the BNP to boycott the government-sponsored dialogue with political parties, saying 'it should not be taken into account who attends it and who does not.'
'The concept of major players in Bangladesh's democracy is very dangerous. It should not be the main consideration who is attending the dialogue and who is not', he said.
Talking to journalists on the sidelines of a seminar on economic affairs at a city hotel, Hossain Zillur said that all have to decide now whether they want democracy or not.
The adviser made the remarks as journalists asked him about the future of the government-sponsored dialogue after the country's two major political parties, Awami League and BNP, announced a boycott of the talks.
   'The two major parties
are expected to come up with positive views to fulfill the dream of the country's 15 crore people for a healthy democracy. We think they [AL and BNP] will show their responsibility and attend the dialogue', he said.
   Hossain Zillur further
said that joining the dialogue by all the parties should
not be the main question. 'The main issue is how Bangladesh can have a free and fair election.'
'All will have to work from their own position towards holding the next elections in time. If one wants not to attend the dialogue, they can work also from their respective positions', he said.
The adviser said the concept of 'major player' could not be more important than the expectation of the entire nation.
He, however, expressed hope that the AL and the BNP would participate in the dialogues.
But he was silent when asked whether the govern-
ment had got any hints that the two parties would join the talks.
The adviser later disclosed that apart from holding dialogues with the business community, the government was going to arrange talks with expatriate Bangladeshis living in major international cities, including New York, Washington London and Tokyo.

[mukto-mona] Dunkin' Donuts drops "terror scarf" ad

US chain drops 'terror scarf' ad
By James Coomarasamy
BBC News, Washington

The US chain Dunkin' Donuts has pulled an advert following complaints that the scarf worn by a celebrity chef offered symbolic support for Islamic extremism.

The online advert for iced coffee featured the well-known US television chef Rachael Ray.

She was wearing a black-and-white checked scarf around her neck that resembled a traditional Arab keffiyeh.

This fashion choice incensed at least one prominent conservative blogger, who said it evoked extremist videos.

The blogger, Michelle Malkin, called the garment "a regular adornment of Muslim terrorists appearing in beheading and hostage-taking videos".

Stylist's choice

Other criticism followed and the coffee and doughnuts chain has now decided to drop the advert.

In a statement, Dunkin' Donuts said the silk scarf had been "selected by Rachael Ray's stylist and that no symbolism was intended.

"But given the possibility of misperception the commercial was no longer being used."

This has caused a fair amount of consternation in some quarters but the conservative blogger at the centre of the row has praised the decision.

"Fashion statements may seem insignificant, but when they lead to the mainstreaming of violence - unintentionally or not - they matter," Ms Malkin has written.

[ALOCHONA] Sentencing of Abul ala Maududi, 1954

Can someone find the Munir-Kayani Report from Pakistani archives and help distribute it as widely as possible?
The curse of Moududi is the scourge on our land, on our faith and our lives. Please do all you can to battle against this curse and restore sanity and humanity to our people.

         Farida Majid

[Below is a note from a cyber-friend in an Indian forum where I had described the plight of Bangladesh in the hands of Jamaat. He echoes my sentiments]

============================================

It should be pointed out that Maududi's imprisonment and death sentence
was for his role in instigation sectarion riots in Pakistan.

The disturbances were of such magnitude that martial law had to be
imposed.

Maududi contributed greatly to rise of intolerance in Pakistan (and the
rest of the subcontinent as well).

The disturbanced were investigated by a panel of judges 'Punjab
Disturbances Court Of Inquiry', which after a detailed investigation
submitted a 384-page report in 1954. It is sometimes called the
Munir-Kayani report, after the two distinguished Justices who headed the
investigation. I will share some of the sections of the report. It is
a very important document for students of modern history, not just of
Pakistan but of the subcontinent as well.

Maududi cannot be considered to be a hero in a society that values
tolerance.

I cannot understand why the Bihar Anjuman, or any other Indian groups
would regard him as a hero.

[mukto-mona] Pakistan's Friday Times reviews "Chasing a Mirage: The Tragic Illusion of an Islamic State"

May 30 - June 05, 2008

Tarek Fatah's lonely crusade

Khalid Hasan
The Friday Times, Pakistan
http://www.thefridaytimes.com/

Tarek Fatah, the enfant terrible of secular Islam and a permanent thorn in the side of the salafi establishment that is so firmly entrenched in the United States and Canada, has now put together in a book what he has been writing in newspapers, saying at public gatherings and declaiming in television and radio appearances - namely that Islam needs to be rescued from its self-proclaimed defenders and advocates who want to take the world's billion plus Muslims back to a mythical past, instead of propelling them forward into the 21st century.

The book – Chasing a Mirage: The tragic Illusion of an Islamic State – has been praised by reviewers, and castigated by those who see the author as one who should be placed at the business end of a canon and fired into the stratosphere. Tarek Fatah, a Marxist during his student days in Pakistan when he saw the inside of some of Pakistan's least hospitable jails, has never lacked courage. Founder of the liberal and forward-looking Muslim Canadian Council of Toronto, he has never been afraid to take on the mullah establishment that controls the vast mosque and madrassa network that decades of Saudi munificence has fathered, not only in North America but almost everywhere else in the world. Those dragon's teeth are now a rich and lethal harvest, poisoning the soil out of which they were made to grow, and infecting those who live on that soil and around it. The fight liberal Muslims are fighting today is an unequal fight, but it is fight for the soul of Islam. And it must be won.

Fatah writes, "My book is also aimed at the ordinary, well-meaning, yet naive non-Muslims of Europe and North America, who are bewildered as they face a community that seemingly refuses to integrate or assimilate as part of Western society, yet wishes to stay in their midst. Liberal and left-leaning Europeans and North Americans may be troubled with the in-your-face defiance of radical Islamist youth, but it seems they are infatuated by the apparently anti-establishment stance. This book may help these liberals understand that the anti-Americanism of the radical Islamists has little to do with anti-imperialism. In fact, the anti-Americanism of the Islamist is not about the United States, but reflects their contempt for the liberal social democratic society we have built and its emphasis on liberty and freedom of the individual itself."

Fatah says he hopes to reach the neo-conservative proponents of the so-called war on terrorism and make them realise that their warmongering has been the best thing that has happened to the Islamist proponents of a worldwide jihad. "The invasion of Iraq was manna from heaven for Al Qaeda. Bin Laden could not have asked for anything more. I hope that the conservative Republicans in the United States and their neo-conservative allies in the West will realise that in the battle of ideas, dropping bombs helps the foe, not the friend." He wants non-Muslims to understand that deep inside the soul of all Muslims lives a Rumi, an Averroes, and a Muhammad Ali. Equity and social justice run through every fibre and gene of the Muslim psyche. Poetry, song, and dance are as much a part of Muslim culture as piety, modesty and charity. Challenging authority has been part of the Muslim heritage.

Fatah does not mince his words. He wants Muslims to end the catastrophic lack of honesty that many of them have become accustomed to. He writes, "If all our theology is structured around the Sunni notion that one tribe and one race is superior to everyone else, and the Shia notion is that the family of the descendants of the Prophet (pbuh) have a divine right to be at the top, then our entire history is seen through this prism. And by choosing sides, they're buying into the mythologies." He finds the sermons of most mosques in the West to be politicised and concerned with only one agenda: that Western society is a satanic pagan one and that it is the obligation of every young Muslim to fight the pagan in jihad. "As for Muslims," he told an interviewer, "we are being used as frontline troops by those who seek medievalism and are upset by any semblance of joy and modernity. We have to take sides. In the end, Muslims will be the losers if they don't wake up."

Fatah has also had the courage to question racism in the Arab world. He has lived in Saudi Arabia for 10 years and says he has witnessed Indian, Pakistani and Bangladeshi Muslims live like slaves in some Arab countries. Also, he is critical of the assumed superiority of the Quraysh Meccan Arabs over other Arabs, and that of Arab Muslims over Persian, Indian and African Muslims. It is no wonder, he writes, that Ibn Khaldun refers to Africans as "dumb animals." Extremist clerics and their followers are chasing a mirage, he says. They are chasing the false dream of an Islamic state that was never contemplated in the Qur'an or by the Holy Prophet Muhammad (pbuh). True Muslims, he maintains, prefer to cultivate "a state of Islam." They prefer to internalise Islamic spiritual values to help guide personal deeds and actions. For that, no special political state is needed. He points out that 95 per cent of Mecca's heritage buildings have been destroyed in the last two decades, mostly to build lucrative high-rises overlooking the Ka'aba. Lost structures include the house of the Hazrat Khadijah, demolished to make way for public toilets; and the house of Hazrat Abu-Bakr, torn down for a Hilton Hotel. Even the old home of the Prophet (pbuh) is under threat from a project known as the Jabal Omar Scheme, which includes seven apartment towers and two 50-storey hotels. He finds it ironic that unlike the widespread protests at Danish caricatures, there has not been a whimper out of any Muslim at these sacrilegious acts.

Fatah's message is best summed up in the following passage from his book: "My book is an appeal to those of my co-religionists who are chasing the mirage of an Islamic State. I hope they can reflect on the futility of their endeavour and instead focus on achieving the state of Islam. Islamists working for the establishment of an Islamic State are headed in the wrong direction. I hope to convince my fellow Muslims that clinging to mythologies of the past is the formula for a fiasco. I would hope they stand up to the merchants of segregation who have fed us with myths and got us addicted to a forced sense of victimhood. Conventional wisdom in the Muslim world dictates that to move forward, we need to link to our past. Fair enough, but in doing so, we have all but given up on the future, labelling modernity itself as the enemy. "Tarek Fatah's is the voice Muslims need to hear, as opposed to the siren call of those who will only lead them to their destruction.

Iran: More women's rights defenders sentenced

EXCERPT
12/05/2008: Four women's rights activists, Nasrin Afzali, Nahid Jafari, Zeinab Peighambar-zadeh, and Minou Mortazi, have been given suspended sentences of whipping (10 lashes) and six months imprisonment.

Four women's rights activists, Nasrin Afzali, Nahid Jafari, Zeinab Peighambar-zadeh, and Minou Mortazi, have been given suspended sentences of whipping (10 lashes) and six months imprisonment. They have been given this harsh sentence for having been part of a small group of people who gathered outside the Revolutionary Court in March, 2007 to register their objections to the trial of five other women activists earlier charged for taking part in a peaceful demonstration in 2006 to demand the removal of laws discriminating against women.

Mauritania: Justice not working for rape victims

EXCERPT
14/05/2008:

The penal code, which is heavily based on Sharia or Islamic law, does not give a precise definition of sexual violence, said lawyer Bilal Ould Dik, so a judge's personal point of view can strongly sway his conviction decision.

"Rape convictions are very rare [in Mauritania] because we are working with such unclear legal texts," he told IRIN. As a result, "rapes often just end with a settlement between the family of the perpetrator and the victim".

Men in Mauritania can still become judges with nothing more than an informal Koranic education, while women are barred from becoming magistrates.

And, according to Dik, many judges automatically label sexual abuses as voluntary sexual relations occurring outside of marriage, known as the crime of 'zina' in Mauritania.

The Mauritanian government says it is trying to increase prosecutions of rape cases but poorly trained judges working with murky, outdated legal texts make for slow progress. (IRIN Africa)

[mukto-mona] Nehru on Tibet & Nepal:Dec 1950

On World Situation, Tibet and Nepal by Jawaharlal Nehru Mainstream, 24May 08 Vol. XLVI, No 23 (http://mainstreamweekly.net/article719.html)

Jawaharlal Nehru's fortyfourth death anniversary falls on May 27 this year. Remembering the architect of modern India on this occasion, we are publishing excerpts from one of his speeches on foreign affairs in Parliament (on December 6, 1950) that are of relevance in the present context. We are also reproducing, besides a piece (New Delhi Skyline) by N.C., three articles on Nehru by noted personalities that appeared in Mainstream (May 28, 1966).

I have always welcomed a debate on foreign affairs in this House because they are no longer the concern merely of experts and specialists. Foreign affairs concern almost every human being now and an event in one part of the world may have consequences which affect people in another. Foreign affairs are the concern of this House, in particular, because on it rests the great responsibility for both domestic and international affairs.
I further welcome this opportunity of discussing the international situation because the world as the House well knows, is passing through a very grave crisis…
I should like to say a few words about two … neighbouring countries—Tibet and Nepal. Some questions were asked earlier this morning in regard to the advance of the Chinese forces into Tibet. I could not give much information then; nor can I do so now. The story of Tibet, so far as we are concerned, is very simple. I am going into past history. Ever since the People's Government of China talked about the liberation of Tibet, our Ambassador told them, on behalf of the Government of India, how the latter felt about it. We expressed our earnest hope that the matter would be settled peacefully by China and Tibet. We also made it clear that we had no territorial or political ambitions in regard to Tibet and that our relations were cultural and commercial. We said that we would naturally like to preserve these relations and continue to trade with Tibet because it did not come in the way of either China or Tibet. We further said that we were anxious that Tibet should maintain the autonomy it has had for at least the last forty years. We did not challenge or deny the suzerainty of China over Tibet. We pointed all this out in a friendly way to the Chinese Government. In their replies, they always said that they would very much like to settle the question peacefully but that they were, in any event, going to liberate Tibet. From whom they were going to liberate Tibet is, however, not quite clear. They gave us to understand that a peaceful solution would be found, though I must say that they gave us no assurance or guarantee to the effect. On the one hand, they said they were prepared for a peaceful solution; on the other, they talked persistently of liberation.
We had come to believe that the matter would be settled by peaceful negotiation and were shocked when we heard that the Chinese armies were marching into Tibet. Indeed, one can hardly talk about war between China and Tibet. Tibet is not in a position to carry on war and, obviously, Tibet is no threat to China. It is said that other countries might intrigue in Tibet. I cannot say much about it because I do not know. It is certain, however, that there was no immediate threat. Violence might, perhaps, be justified in the modern world but one should not resort to it unless there is no other way. There was another way in Tibet as we pointed out. That is why the action of China came to us as a surprise.
The House is aware of the correspondence that was exchanged between the Chinese Government and our Government. We have continued to press upon them that it would be desirable for them to halt their advances and settle matters with Tibetan representatives peacefully. There is no doubt that during the last few weeks they have checked their main advance. However, I cannot say for certain what their future intentions are. Some small groups may have continued to advance in some places but so far as we know there has been no advance towards Lhasa, where conditions are still normal. That, of course, does not mean that the problem is solved.

COMING to Nepal, I must say that it has been the scene of strange developments during the last fortnight. Ever since I have been associated with this Government, I have taken a great deal of interest in Nepal. We have desired, not only to continue our old friendship with that country but to put it on a still firmer footing. We have inherited both good things and bad from the British. Our relations with some of our neighbouring countries developed during an expansive phase of British imperial policy. Nepal was an independent country when India was under British rule; but strictly speaking, her independence was only formal. The test of the independence of a country is that it should be able to have relations with other countries without endangering that independence. Nepal's foreign relations were strictly limited to her relations with the Government functioning in India at the time. That was an indication that Nepal's approach to international relations was a very limited one.
When we came into the picture, we assured Nepal that we would not only respect her independence but see, as far as we could, that she developed into a strong and progressive country. We went further in this respect than the British Government had done and Nepal began to develop other foreign relations. We welcomed this and did not hinder the process as the British had done. Frankly, we do not like and shall not brook any foreign interference in Nepal. We recognise Nepal as an independent country and wish her well. But even a child knows that one cannot go to Nepal without passing through India. Therefore, no other country can have as intimate a relationship with Nepal as ours is. We would like every other country to appreciate the intimate geographical and cultural relationship that exists between India and Nepal.
Three years ago, we assured Nepal of our desire that she should be a strong, independent and progressive country. In the nature of things, we stood not only for progressive democracy in our own country but also in other countries. We have said this not only to Nepal but it has consistently been a part of our policy in distant quarters of the world. We are certainly not going to forget this when one of our neighbouring countries is concerned.
We pointed out in as friendly a way as possible that the world was changing rapidly and if Nepal did not make an effort to keep pace with it, circumstances were bound to force her to do so. It was difficult for us to make this clear because we did not wish to interfere with Nepal in any way.
We wished to treat Nepal as an independent country but, at the same time, saw that, unless some steps were taken in the internal sphere, difficulties might arise. Our advice, given in all friendship, did not, however, produce any result. During the last fortnight, some new developments have taken place in Nepal. Our interest in the internal conditions of Nepal has become still more acute and personal, because of the developments across our borders, to be frank, especially those in China and Tibet. Besides our sympathetic interest in Nepal, we were also interested in the security of our own country. From time immemorial, the Himalayas have provided us with a magnificent frontier. Of course, they are no longer as impassable as they used to be but are still fairly effective. We cannot allow that barrier to be penetrated because it is also the principal barrier to India. Therefore, much as we appreciate the independence of Nepal, we cannot allow anything to go wrong in Nepal or permit that barrier to be crossed or weakened, because that would be a risk to our own security. The recent developments have made us ponder more deeply over the Nepal situation than we had done previously. All this time, however, we had functioned in our own patient way, advising in a friendly way and pointing out the difficulties inherent in the situation in a spirit of co-operation.
As the House knows, the King of Nepal is, at the present moment, in Delhi along with two other members of the Nepalese Government. The talks we have had with them have yielded no results thus far. May I, in this connection, warn this House not to rely too much on the statements that appear in the newspapers? Nowadays, they have seldom any basis in fact.
Needless to say, we pointed out to the Ministers who have come here that, above all, we desire a strong progressive and independent Nepal. In fact, our chief need—not only our need but also that of the whole world—is peace and stability. Having said that, I should also like to add that we are convinced that a return to the old order will not bring peace and stability to Nepal.

WE have tried, for what it is worth, to advise Nepal to act in a manner so as to prevent any major upheaval. We have tried to find a way, a middle way, if you like, which will ensure the progress of Nepal and the introduction of, or some advance in, the ways of democracy in Nepal. We have searched for a way which would, at the same time, avoid the total uprooting of the ancient order. Whether or not it is possible to find such a way, I do not know…
We are a patient Government. Perhaps, we are too patient sometimes. I feel, however, that if this matter drags on, it will not be good for Nepal and it might even make it more difficult to find the middle way we have been advocating.
We, in this country, speak a good deal of foreign affairs and offer advice, for what it is worth, to other countries. But the fact remains that such value as our advice may have is only moral or psychological. The fate of the world depends far more on the great Powers, on what they do and do not do. The fate of the world depends more on the USA, the United Kingdom, the Soviet Union and China than on the rest of the world put together. I should like to make an earnest appeal to these great countries to make every effort to solve the present tangle by negotiations or other peaceful means. The consequenes of not doing so are too terrible to contemplate. The irony of the situation is, in fact, that people in every country desire peace; but at the present moment, some evil fate seems to pursue humanity. It is driving mankind in a direction which can only end in stark ruin. So, I hope that these great countries will apply themselves to securing peace and I am sure the House will join me in this appeal. On behalf of my Government and, if I may say so, this House, I should like to make a pledge, namely, that we will do everything in our power to promote peace and to avoid war.

RE: [ALOCHONA] Internal instability invites external intervention

Dear Sir,

To the best of my knowledge, I think I wrote, "Bangladesh seems to be in deep trouble". I take the entire responsibility for saying so.

Would you mind to please explain how that troubled you? I am sorry to bother you sending you this response, but I had no other option.

I felt extermely bad about your response. Do you think it was right to say what you said? What was the idea behind saying "Don't worry".

You may not like what I said. These are my ideas, definitely not yours. If you did not like, you could just ignore. Or if you had ideas

in contrary to what I said, you could post your ideas, without personifying, and remaining within the context of the issues.

I know you are a politician. Your party is great, but I do not believe that your party taught you to interact with people this way.

I know you write to newspaper. I believe a journalist must know how to deal with someone else. I know you give speeches in functions.

If someone from the street would say these things to me, I would not mind. How could I believe that you could utter these sentences.

Anyway, I am extremely sorry for saying you all these but I used to know all these days that you are a thinker, a leader, a writer, and a

wonderful gentlemen. I did not expect from you to deal with this piece of public posting the way you did. You could critize for what you thought,

keeping yourself within the context of the posting, not taking it to a personal level.

In a country where I was born and raised, my parents, grand parents, and all ancestors were born and raised, I always feel for that country.

With your advice, I shall not stop worrying, I do not believe and agree with the rest of what you said.

It would be extremely honorable for you if you take a few moments of you journalistic time, read my posting, review, correct, advice, recommend,

add, criticize, and give ideas about how Bangladesh can be stabilized, improved, and made a noble country of the world. All what you say may not materialize,

but that is how the legacy is being built. Someone someday may extremely value your words what you leave behind. Thanks, and again sorry to be

so open to you.

Bangladesh seems to be in deep trouble. All started by political corruptions. Economic corruption was second to political corruptions. Bangldesh has a long tradition of economic corruption. But this was not like a fire that completely burns the house. It was like a hole on the roof. Rain and storm water would damage the house, but that could be repaired, if appropriate measures would be taken. However, the political corruption is like fire and burning the whole house and there is a possibility that it may totally ruin the house if this fire is not put out on time. All political parties since the creation of Bangladesh including the Army are absolutely responsible to bring this country in this situation. Whatever happened in the past, we must all try to control the damage done to our country, and the only way is reconcilliation and unity of all public, political parties, and army of Bangladesh. Without this, Bangladsh would loose its footing on its own soil. Heinous intruders are watching and waiting to grab and establish their grip on this soil, as soon as they get chance, they would do it. India would not spare any chance to incorporate this land within itself, Pakistan wants to dominate this land back like East Pakistan (they already tried it in Afganistan), Saudis and other Arab countries are trying their best with money and religion to create their bona fide caders to take up political powers and convert it into a rouge country. This triangular fight is going in the country so severley that is tearing the country into pieces. A number of people are loosing the allegiance to the country and becoming the caders of one or the other evil forces. In this situation, the investors of politics and money from the world powers such as USA and UK, are becoming more and more alarmed day by day. They want stability and do not want to see changes in Bangladesh. That notion was the main reason why many of these countries supported the present government. They want to keep the country stable and so they do not want to see that the internal chaos brings an abrupt change in Bangladesh. But the present Government is backed by the army who are inept in public administration and tend towards imposing military control. This does not bring long term stability in the country.  Initially there was no other option at the time when the ruling party became extremely politically and economically corrupt and the opposition engaged into the destruction of lives and properties so intensely that it was a necessity to call up army to stop violence. Once army got power, did never back off. This is the army composed of our brothers and sisters, not by the people from any foreign country, and so should understand that their mis-steps may bring misery to their own brothers and sisters and may cost the country totally. It is a solemn call to everyone, please all of our brothers and sisters from all walks of life, come up to a common platform and brainstorm how the country can be saved fron the forign intervention, either by an external army or by their internal caders.

Subject: [ALOCHONA] Internal instability invites external intervention

Internal instability invites external intervention

I
t does not need an expert in the history of international relations to predict that internal political and social polarizations leading to instabilities within a state invariably invite external interventions, both covert and overt. The latest example of this is Kosovo which was a part of Serbia. Internal instabilities in Serbia erupted in civil war which invited external intervention by a US led coalition and ultimately Kosovo unilaterally declared independence supported by the USA and the EU. Other examples are Afghanistan and Iraq, both of which the US has directly occupied. Less overt but equally effective has been the US intervention in Pakistani politics over the last one decade. Such events in Africa are too numerous to cite.

States intervene in other states because of two reasons: One, when a destabilized or failing state possesses resources which other states need - intervention, often armed, by other states becomes necessary to secure and preserve those resources; examples are Iraq and Afghanistan. Two, when a destabilized or failing state tends to release forces which may exacerbate existing instabilities in neighboring states - intervention, both direct and covert become necessary to contain and limit the damage; examples are Somalia, Ethiopia and many other states in Africa.

The case of Bangladesh falls within these two aspects mentioned above. Bangladesh possesses limited energy resources which neighboring states might think they need and any severe instability in Bangladesh will have spill-over effects into neighboring states. There is no doubt that our neighbor India is not only keeping a close watch on the unfolding situation inside our Country but is also actively involved in our politics to ensure that its interests are well protected. Other powers such as the USA and EU are not so much concerned about Bangladesh as about India. Any large-scale social and political unrests, conflict and chaos in Bangladesh will invariably affect India adversely particularly in its separatist-prone south-eastern regions which will then affect the burgeoning Indian economy in which the USA and EU have invested so heavily. Moreover, in order to protect itself, India might decide to militarily preempt should it see a situation of civil conflict or civil war in Bangladesh, in which case the entire region would face a period of extreme instability such as that of 1971. Worries and calculations such as these have prompted India, USA and UK to openly comment about what sort of politics and government Bangladesh ought to have.

For the time being however, these foreign powers are insisting on elections, which they hope would dampen any further social and political unrest. To that effect, representatives of these foreign powers along with our politicians, the Emergency Government and the Bangladesh Army might well be cobbling together a solution but that solution would only be a temporary one , deferring the main issues - the inherent contradictions in our body-politic, the resolutions of which is essential if long tern stability is to be obtained. Foreign power interventions, covert now, might well take a more ominous overt form if we cannot sort ourselves out but perhaps some within us want that overt foreign intervention and might well be working for it.
