[mukto-mona] Re: POPE: Enough with slaughters in Iraq [AP news]

WRT: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/mukto-mona/message/47194

Jahed,

If there is one hypocrite in this whole exercise of speaking about
Iraq it is Benedict at the Vatican. His remarks have come only after
the abduction of Archbishop Rahho and he was not concerned about what
was happening in Iraq until recently. Indeed, in news that the US and
British emdia have been content to hide because it would be
politically incorrect for them to give vent to it, the fact is that
Catholic terrorist groups have been seen in Iraq assisting the Shia
militias with whom they have had alliances in the past when they were
financed by Iran.

The British Blackwatch regiment which had earlier served in Ireland
was sent in to Iraq just before the assault on Fallujah and that
brought the Irish (former IRA) men in to train the Shias who were
wary that this regiment would be sent against them after it finished
with the Sunnis in Fallujah. On the first day, three of the Black
Watch's men were killed in a suicide attack and constant, later
pressure against them in Basra where they were redeployed, made the
British withdraw them altogether as the Brits were terrified that one
of their crack regiments was gradually being ground down especially
with the highly advanced new improvised explosives that the Irish
taught the Shia militias to make. Also several large caches of arms
were intercepted from Croatia, another redoubt of Catholic
fundamentalism in the world, in Italy on their way to Iraq and
Benedict kept his mouth shut. His sudden, newfound loquaciousness on
the war in Iraq is only because the chickens have now finally started
coming home to roost and Catholics are being targeted in Iraq.

There are enough secular reasons to oppose the war, as well as views
from human rights' perspectives. The views of a man who is a cynical
bigot and a recalcitrant former Nazi do not need to be looked at for
anything other than the hypocrisy that they embody.

[mukto-mona] Excellent duty

WRT: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/mukto-mona/message/47183

Kolkata, the city of Sibnarayan Ray, did not have any condolence meeting worth mention. But NRBs and NRIs of New York showed their cultural conscience. I am both an admirer and critic of him, but more an admirer than a critic.

Your sense of responsibility brings a zephyr in the darkened sadness among us.

WRT: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/mukto-mona/message/47181

Dear Avijit:
Again all old rotten stuff. Everybody knows that, next time say something new.
I know that you are much more intellect & be happy with that, have fun.
There are people in this world who failed to do anything in their home but talk big as if they are solving all the problems of the world, in deep heart they are just cowards (I don't mean you, just an example).
One more thing, I am known (Little or none) by my own identity and need no certificate, good or bad, I am ok with what I am.
Thanks. No more, close of this episode.

[mukto-mona] My Last response to Sitangshu Guha

WRT http://groups.yahoo.com/group/mukto-mona/message/47180

[Shitangshu Guha]
If you read again my posting supporting Iraq War, you will see that,
I told clearly, Saddam & Iraq was partly responsible for
Islamization of Bangladesh through Moulana Mannan, Inquilab, Ershad
& others. Well, people are suffering, what we can do?

[Response] Only thing you could do was to read history. If you would
have read history, you would have known that US whom you consider as
the `savior' (muktidata) from Islamic fundamentalism were
responsible to create Islamic fundamentalism and its spreading. Do
not forget that

- It was US who had had supplied Saddam with all kinds of chemical
and biological weapons once and,
- supported Saddam when he used gas against Iranians and also
against Kurds.

Also consider that -

- long term relationship between Bush and Saudi King who are
responsible for spreading Wahabism throughout the world.

- Consider the fact of Osama bin laden being trained by America and
then introduced in a country which had women as ministers, teachers
and doctors and it was SIX MONTHS BEFORE the Soviets were to come
in.

- Consider the fact that US Overthrowed Mossadeq- the secular prime
minister of Iran in a coup which brought in the brutal dictatorship
of the Shah and then saw the political opposition coalesce around
the Mullahs.

- Consider the fact that US Overthrowed the secular and democratic
Sukarno of Indonesia and replacement by Suharto who undertook a
genocide in East Timor.

- Killing all passengers of an Iranian jet liner by American
Missile. America never apologized rather President G. Bush remarked
arrogantly – `I will never apologize for the United States of
America. I don't care what the facts are'.

- Providing support to the fanatic Muslim group in Eygypt to counter
secular leader Nasser

- Providing support to pukka Islamist Khandokar Mustaq after making
a successful bloody coup to remove Bangabandhu Sheik Mujibur Rahaman
in 1975.

- Providing financial and economical support to radical Islamist Zia-
ul Huque of Pakisan who introduced Sharia law to the country.

[Sitangshu Guha] Dear Avijit, you cited some funny arguments
comparing Prof. Ajoy Roy & me. Please don't do that, don't bring
Ajoy Sir to your level or my level.

Response : You are becoming even funnier. It was you who brought
Prof Ajoy Roy's name in the debate and repeatedly asked me why I was
only criticizing you, not Prof. Ajoy Roy. When I gave you the proper
explanation then you tuned yourself upside down and saying – `don't
bring Ajoy Sir to your level or my level'. I am laughing out loud.
More I am debating with you, the more I am understanding about your
intellectual level.

[Sitangshu Guha] It's obvious that I live in a bi-polar world but
not as it was described by you or somebody else; rather it is
militant Islam & mankind. I belong to the second, where you belong?

Response : I have explained you repeatedly that I am against all
kind of fundamentalism. I am against all kinds of social injustices,
religious and oppressive dogmas, doctrines, and discriminations. I
have critiqued everything that hinders people's access to civil
liberty, freedom, democracy and secularism. I took a strong stand
against all kinds of human rights violations such as oppression of
ethnic/religious minority community and gender-based discriminations
against women and others, whereas you only see two domain -
'Islamism' and 'mankind'. You indeed live in a bipolar world.
That's why you would never see that there are a lot of atrocities
around the world besides islamic fundamentalism, which we should
protest, or at least should not overlook : such as-

- Gujarat Massacre. and Demolision of Babri Mosque.
- the genocide of North America.
- the death of 3 million Vietnamese.
- the ravaging of Africa
- the dispossession of the Palestinians
- the Killing in Kashmir
- Afghan and Iraq bombing
- Notorious supprt to the terrorist group by US in Latin America
etc.

May be the lives of these million people and million chidren is not
a matter to you. I am yet to learn how 1 million death occurred in
Iraq, or the three-four million dead in US supported Polpot regime,
or the hundreds and thousands dead in Latin America, or half a
million children who died in Iraq and Afghan due to sanctions or
bombing can be justified against 'Islamic fundamentalism'.

[Sitangshu Guha] Thank you. May be we will stop this episode.
[Response] Thanks.
Avijit

[mukto-mona] Police & State

State, party & police~I
Acting In Concert To Suppress Dissidence By Amiya K Samanta** 16 Mar 07 (http://www.thestatesman.net/page.arcview.php?date=2008-03-16&usrsess=1&clid=3&id=222147)
Several widely publicised incidents in recent months have exposed the state of policing in West Bengal. The force has handled public order problems as in Singur and Nandigram and the cases involve murder, mayhem, rape and arson. At another remove, it has come under a cloud over the death of Rizwanur Rahman. Thanks to media vigilance and a perceptive and protesting civil society, the people have come to know more about these incidents and the police response than is generally possible.
The official arrangements to honour the citizens' right to information in the shape of a press note or the tongue-in-cheek statement of a minister in a hurry or a hesitant civil servant's mono-syllable response, in fact, hide more than they reveal. But the media, within the limitations of the usual attitudinal constraints, have fully covered the gruesome incidents, overcoming the efforts by political activists to prevent them from being witness to the depredations whenever the truth was likely to be politically inconvenient.
This happened in Nandigram on 14 March 2007, when the media was not initially allowed, and again on 12 November when the area of operation was out of bounds for all and sundry. Still whatever has been reported and the images telecast are sufficient to make an objective assessment of the performance of two primary functions of the police ~ maintenance of public order and investigation of criminal cases.
The law permits the use of minimum force to disperse a violent crowd; but indiscriminate beatings of women and children after dragging them out of their huts, willful destruction of property in the courtyard, setting fire to haystacks were acts of aggression, which are plainly uncalled for excesses. In Nandigram, it was still worse. A huge police force was collected and the crowd, a sizeable section of which consisted of women and children, at a short distance was visibly unarmed. The Central Bureau of Investigation in its report to the High Court has reportedly found blatant inaccuracies and deliberate suppression of facts and figures by the local police on almost all counts starting from the number of rounds fired to the number of dead and injured. While the investigating agency has found no compelling situation to justify the opening of fire, the divisional commissioner holding the executive inquiry has reportedly justified the police firing.
It is not merely the ruling party suborning the police and the administration in an isolated political conflict; it is still worse than that. A number of television channels beamed images showing people, who do not belong to the force and yet donning the police uniform. With firearms in hand, they were chasing unarmed people. Some people in civilian clothes were seen leading the police.
These images demonstrate how effortlessly the state and the party functionaries can combine to suppress the dissidents. The attack on an unarmed procession in Nandigram on 12 November was launched by armed gangs mobilised and led by the leaders of the ruling party. This resulted in the death of as yet unknown number of people and widespread arson and destruction of houses. That the administration and the police were a party to the operation is evident from the shifting of the nearby police posts before the attack. When the chief minister owns the responsibility for the murderous assault launched by the activists of his party in Nandigram and justifies it as an act of just retaliation, his constitutional identity is subsumed by his political identity and the state merges in the party. This may appear to be undemocratic and unconstitutional to the intelligentsia but chief minister has given frank expression to the prevailing reality. The people of West Bengal know for certain that the party is the state.
Since important developments in the investigation of cases arising out of the incidents in Singur and Nandigram and the tragic and mysterious death of Rizwanur Rahman are now known from the orders of the High Court and the reports in the media, a critical assessment of the investigating capabilities of the police is possible. In the case of the murder of Tapasi Malik of Singur, the state CID took a totally wrong line and claimed the murder to be a case of suicide out of a failed love affair - a theory deliberately planted by the interested political group. The CBI investigation has, however, established that it was a conspiratorial murder, in which two local leaders of the ruling party and a few other accomplices have been charge-sheeted.
A couple of days after the Nandigram incidents of 14 March, the Calcutta High Court on a public interest litigation petition, ordered the CBI to inquire and report within seven days. In course of the investigation, the CBI arrested 10 party activists with a huge cache of arms, police uniforms and incriminating documents and handed them over to the local police as CBI was not investigating the cases but was merely inquiring on the orders of the High Court. The arrested activists were soon let off on bail.
The still more gruesome incidents of 12 November remain shrouded in mystery as the number of deaths and injured has not been ascertained. The graves, discovered at the initiative of the CRPF, continue to yield unidentified bodies.
As regards Rizwanur Rahman's death, Asoke Todi, father of Priyanka Todi and a multi-millionaire businessman of Kolkata, approached the commissioner of police for getting the inter-community marriage dissolved by coercion. The police intervened illegally and forced Priyanka to go back to her parents' home for about a week. She was not allowed to return or to communicate with her husband even after the stipulated week. Rizwanur's body was found by the side of the railway track. A case of unnatural death was registered at the railway police station. Neither the GRP nor the CID, to which the case was entrusted subsequently by the state government following a public outcry, registered any cognisable case, in spite of the existence of both oral and documentary evidence that at least four officers of Kolkata Police threatened Rizwanur in an effort to break up the marriage. After the loss of a month's time, the CBI took up the inquiry on the High Court's order, partially satisfying the public demand for justice.
The manner of handling the issues of public order and conducting the investigation of serious cases bring out without a shadow of doubt that the police is no longer an instrument of law but a tool to serve the interest of the ruling parties and the rich and powerful. The manner of maintaining public order characterises the nature of polity: an autocratic state will maintain public order by the rule of thumb and not by the rule of law, while in a liberal democracy public expression of dissent is not viewed as public disorder.
Any criticism or protest against an order established by the regime as against the democratic public order based on the rule of law, draws denunciations at regular intervals from the leaders high in the party hierarchy. Such threats and hate campaigns with the accusation of conspiracy, allegedly hatched in collusion with the so-called vested interests and the "imperialists" to create disorder with a view to destabilising the order of the regime. The accusations are vague and often imaginary; but a powerful propaganda machine can create a fearful image of doom and destruction out of the vagueness. There are examples from Hitler's Germany and Stalin's Soviet Russia where such images were deftly etched in the minds of the people in a bid to perpetuate the totalitarian order. Threats are routinely translated into terrible acts of reprisal smothering all voices of dissent into a dumb anguish of fear.

State, party & police~II 17 Mar 07 (http://thestatesman.net/page.news.php?clid=3&theme=&usrsess=1&id=195598)
Intolerance of protest and dissent has far-reaching effects on the polity and society as well. Denigration of the institutions like the High Court and the Supreme Court that sustain democracy and the rule of law eventually weakens the democratic fabric.
In the context of increasing political and other extraneous interference in police investigation and in public order issues since 1950s in all the states of the country, various commissions, committees, civil society groups, responsible individuals have recommended that the role of the police should be redefined and the law enforcement apparatus should be modified to conform to the needs of human rights and democratic polity. Way back in 1959 the Kerala police commission observed, "the result of partisan interference is often reflected in lawless enforcement of laws". Such partisan enforcement of the law has been continuing unabated though the National Police Commission (1979-81) sought to remedy the situation by creating statutory institutions with the participation of civil society to ensure functional autonomy and streamline the police accountability system. Besides, it recommended separation of the investigation wing from public order duties, and fixed the tenure of officers in crucial positions.

NPC recommendations

The Law Commission (1996) also suggested such separation in the interest of better criminal justice administration. Then the Rebeiro Committee (1998-1999) and the Padmanabhaiah Committee (2002) were unanimous on the essentials of the NPC recommendations. The committee for Criminal Justice Reform (2003) headed by Justice Malimath also recommended separation of the investigation from the law and order wings and endorsed the recommendations of the NPC with regard to functional autonomy of the police and its accountability.
The Police Act Drafting Committee (PADC) headed by Soli Sorabjee former Attorney-General, drafted a model Police Act (2006 after consultations with civil society. The PADC has not disturbed the right of superintendence of the state governments over the police, though the right has been defined in clearer terms. It has, however, created high power bodies with well-defined roles to ensure police accountability and autonomous functioning in accordance with the law. The draft act also incorporates a well-thought out method of separating the public order wing from the investigation wing and security of tenure of officers in key positions.
The Administrative Reforms Commission headed by Veerappa Moily, in its report on "public order" (2007), has conceded that "once a person dons a political robe, he can control the police". The commission has recommended the creation of statutory bodies to safeguard the "Law and Order Police and the Crime Investigation Agency" from political and other extraneous influence.
The Supreme Court in the case of Vineet Narayan vs Union of India (1998) delinked the CBI from the direct control of the Centre and asked the state governments for early implementation of the recommendations of the NPC. But no state government paid heed to it and the Centre took four years to relinquish its direct control over the CBI. Once again the Supreme Court in September 2006 in response to a writ petition filed by Prakash Singh and another, ordered time-barred implementation of the seven-point directive ~ (i) constitution of the State Security Commission; (ii) procedure of selection and minimum tenure of DGP; (iii) tenure of other key positions; (iv) separation of investigation from law and order; (v) constitution of police establishment board; (vi) state and district complaint authority; (vii) constitution of a national security commission. Some of the state governments have only partially implemented the directives while a few others have made a mockery of the compliance.
The Supreme Court's primary objective to ensure functional autonomy, to make police accountability procedure transparent and to tone up the investigation by separating it from other duties have, therefore, been frustrated as the political dispensations consider such reforms detrimental to their self-interest. The majority of the state governments, including the one on West Bengal, have been resisting the idea of the State Security Commission or the State Police Board, the expression used in the draft police act, with the home minister as chairman and a High Court judge, the leader of the opposition and several eminent persons from civil society as members. The idea was to oversee police performance and ensure functional independence. Such a statutory arrangement will surely end the total control of the police by the ruling party. But it is likely to jeopardise the electoral prospects and other interests of the ruling party.
It has been claimed before the Supreme Court in sworn affidavits that political interference in police administration is minimal and that creation of an independent body to monitor police performance will undermine the authority of the elected government. When the home minister is the chairman of the Board/ Commission, how can it be contended that the state government's authority will be undermined? As regards the creation of "Police Complaint Authority" the state governments have pleaded that the proposed bodies will duplicate the existing state vigilance commissions, and will also demoralise the police. The complaint authority is expected to look into the entire area of omissions and commissions of the police, besides corruption. The state vigilance commissions are not statutory bodies but only government appointed bodies; although way back in 1964 the Santhanam Committee recommended autonomous, statutory vigilance commissions for each state, and in 1998 the Supreme Court directed the states to make vigilance commissions statutory bodies. But no state government has so far complied with it. These commissions are now avenues for patronage distribution, and the top jobs are carrots to the senior officers about to retire from service.

Partially implemented

Objections have been raised by the state on the issue of separation of investigation from the law and order functions on the plea of cost escalation. Given the fact that the criminal justice administration is on the verge of collapse, expenditure for such a measure is justified. The three other directives have been partially implemented by the state governments. It has condescended to select the DGP from a panel of four names prepared by the home department and not by the UPSC, as that would infringe upon the authority of the state. But the UPSC's selection is likely to be impartial and transparent, while the state government will invariably select a pliant person for the top slot.
Even with regard to the enactment of a new Police Act in place of the old one of 1861 vintage, the state government has been dragging its feet, although in an affidavit sworn before the Supreme Court on 2 January 2007, it stated that a committee had been set up to draft a new Police Act. Subsequently another affidavit dated 27 August 2007, states that a "high powered" committee under the home secretary has been drafting a new West Bengal Police Act and Kolkata Police Act. As a matter of fact, the act is being drafted in virtual secrecy, because even the other political parties of the ruling front, not to speak of the opposition parties have little inkling about it. Consultation with civil society, human right groups, and women's associations have been ruled out. In matters of police reform, consultation with civil society is imperative.

Is Bangladesh Safe Land for the Journalist?

By Nirmal L. Gomes, Washington, DC

Whenever we open the newspapers and turn on TV or radio there are tones of exciting news publish and broadcast. Some news, stories, events, and incidents are so painful and nightmare. Last year it was a time when my attention was brought into an agonizing news report published in more than dozens daily newspapers throughout the Bangladesh about one of the young journalists Zahid Al Amin who was brutally tortured when he was in performing his duty. Presently Zahid has been working in The Bangladesh Observer and Assistant Editor in Our Time. He has been looking for justice since July 22, 2005 (The Bangladesh Observer, March 19 & July 22, 2006, Daily Suprobhat Bangladesh, April 4 & July 22, 2006, Amadershomoy, March 4 & 23, 2006, Daily Janakantha, July 21, August 13, & Jaijaidin, August 9, 2007). On July 21, 2005 he went to Chittagong Medical College Hospital to cover the news of an acid victim Hosne Ara. He was talking to the relatives of severely acid burnt woman who refused to give dowry and burnt body by acid (Daily Naya Diganta, July 22, 2005, Prothom-Alo, July 27, 2005, The Independent, July 28, 2005, Daily Star, July 27, 2005, Daily Suprobhat Bangladesh, July 24, 2005, The Bangladesh Observer, July 24 & 28, 2005, Shangbad, July 28, 2005, and so on). After two years later Chittagong court Judicial Metropolitan Magistrate Mohammad Abdur Rab ordered the Chittagong Metropolitan Police authorities to conduct further investigation into the case in connection with attacking and torturing journalist Zahid Al Amin (The Daily Star, Feb. 27, 2008).
The patient Hosne Ara succumbed to her injury due to lack of proper treatment at the hospital on the day she admitted in the hospital. Zahid was trying to get true story of the incident and the present condition of the victim. However, he was then brutally attacked and assaulted by some intern doctors and staffs. He was almost killed by those culprit people. He was injured seriously on his head, broken and fractured legs, and so on. By couple of hours continuous tortured in the hospital he became physically, emotionally, and mentally ill. After the incident he filed a case against those criminals, but till today he is not getting justice, rather he escaped from life threats from those criminals and culprits. Immediately Chittagong journalists criticized this incident and demanded justice to the Prime Minister. The Chittagong Union of Journalists (CUJ) and Chittagong Metropolitan Union of Journalists (CMUJ) also demanded justice submitting the memorandum to the Deputy Commissioner of Chittagong. Indeed, the nationwide journalists also strongly criticized this incident and demanded justice.
A village boy Zahid had a dream to be a great journalist. With this long vision he got admission at the Department of Communication and Journalism in Chittagong University. Due to his freelance writings he became well known to the regional as well as the national level as a young journalist. During his studies he started to work for local English and Bengali newspapers, i.e. The Daily Life, The Bangladesh Observer, and Daily Noya Diganta. A dream taking him into action, Zahid started to tell the nation and world the true stories of various issues by his creative writings. A staff reporter of The Bangladesh Observer at this time who has been in anxiety and wondering for his life when he will be attacked again. He has been receiving threats over by phone, the criminal attempted to kidnap Zahid on his way to office at evening. He has been getting pressure by the culprits to withdraw the case from Chittagong police station that he filed against those culprits in Chittagong. Zahid registered a general diary (GD) with Motijheel police station in this connection.
However, rather than bringing justice of those criminals till they are holding their big position in Chittagong Medical College and Hospital. Not only that! Before 1/11 the government rewarded some of those people by posting them to Dhaka with responsible positions. More than two years past of this incident, till today the police can not identify criminals and even can not give any warrant against those criminals. Till today Zahid hopes he will get justice, but when?
Justice not yet ascetic and justice not yet exiled from Bangladesh. It has been seen that the present caretaker government has been willing to solve many pending cases that previous political government did not solve those cases due to lack of neutrality of the government. Moreover, the caretaker government vows to clean-up corruption with zero tolerance in Bangladesh. The government has been trying heart and soul to bring corrupted people into justice, which has appreciated by home and abroad. Writing of the journalists is the mirror of the nation. Indeed, the caretaker government encourages true news report and reinforces media to be more accountable for their report writings. Their writings open the eyes of the government and citizens--what is right to do or what is not supposed to be done, and what should be more concern in order to develop the nation.
In 2006 the International media watchdog, reporters without borders, has ranked Bangladesh one of the most dangerous countries for journalists (VOA News). Every one knows very well that journalism is one of the high distinguish profession, but it is a high life risk profession in many countries. WAN reported that in 2007 about 84 media employees killed including 1 killed in Bangladesh. Before October 2006 last five years 11 journalists have killed in Bangladesh (Daily Janakantha, Oct. 28, 2006).
Todays journalism is more dangerous than ever. In the past decade more than 500 journalists have killed throughout the world, often for simply doing their jobs. These murders were direct attack on journalists, not only on individuals, but also on society as a whole. Yet very few of the killers were ever brought into justice (Editors Webdog, Oct. 6, 2006). For Zahid Al Amin it was not wrong to be born in Bangladesh; it was not wrong to be a journalist, and to write the true story for the people! Why he was brutally tortured by doctors, interns, and staff of a public hospital on July 21, 2005? Is Bangladesh the safe place for Zahid or any journalist? This question strongly rises in the nation and abroad. Till today he gets death threat repeatedly from the culprits. When will Zahid be able to walk freely in Bangladesh? When he will be able to sleep at home without any fear? Will the journalists in Bangladesh get enough protect to do their job without any torture and killing threats?
In this situation the nation believes that getting legal cooperation and action from present caretaker government which can solve Zahids case and will bring justice for Zahid. The nation and world look for justice for all journalists along with all citizens in Bangladesh.

Re: [mukto-mona] Present plight of Taslima Nasrin as described by hers elf.

WRT: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/mukto-mona/message/47148

I thought people in West Bengal mostly subscribe to the Communist ideology and they do not care so much about religion. If this assumption is correct, West Bengal should have been a heaven for Taslima. Then, who are those demonstrators, who paralyzed Kolkata and demanded removal of Taslima's from West Bengal? In the end, communist government had to cave in to the pressure of those demonstrators. Are these demonstrators really communist? May be not.

Re: [mukto-mona] Personal Communication

WRT: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/mukto-mona/message/47156

My dear Ajoy-Sir,
It was so nice to hear from you. You are completely right about me, including years. I was doing research during 1975 - 1977 with Hironmoy-Sir for my Ph.D thesis and joined the department in 1978. I left for USA in 1981. It seems like I am there in the department while writing this mail. Everything is flashing back to my memory. How is my Hironmoy-Sir and his family? How are my other teachers in the department?

I am working in a Hospital as a Chief Medical Physicist. I would like to have your personal e-mail address in the future. Please forward it to me. Thank you so much for your reply.

Yours'

[ALOCHONA] Re: Middle East Labour: Recruiting agents blamed

Mr. Saeed

Thanks a lot for your very informative narrative. You have analyzed the situation very correctly. Especially, when one gentleman in this column was trying to mocker the poor workers who ransacked the Bangladesh Embassy in Kuwait and our "proud" nation.  (I think this gentleman has immense love for his country. That is why he calls it a third rate country). Thanks again for making us aware the real reasons behind the sad happening in Kuwait years ago.

The present situation and condition of Bangladeshi workers, as we see in the newspapers, is worrying. Lack of initiative by the Government to negotiate and resolve this issue is disturbing also.  Some high-up must visit and reassure particularly the unskilled workers there. The Government is too busy planning the exit of Khaleda and Hasina but these poor people have nothing to do with the politics of Hasina and Khaleda. Why these poor people should be made to pay the price to get rid of these ladies. Even to think about it is a crime. Those who talk like this I invite them to leave their jobs, comeback to the country (even it's a third rate country) and join the band wagon against Khaleda and Hasina. I bet they will not. As somebody rightly said in the past, they are paper tiger only.

For people like these, we also don't want Khaleda and Hasina to be PM again. To their beloved Moeen and Fakhruddin let them be the President and PM but we want them to leave their present positions and come through proper channels (through elections).

Junaid

[ALOCHONA] Responding to misrepresentation of events regarding Women's Policy

IRT: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/mukto- mona/message/47146

Striving hard to present himself as the grand spokesman of All Muslims, Mr. S. A. Hannan fails miserably, again and again, to abide by the simplest and the straightest of Qur'anic commands:

Do not cover the Truth with falsehood, nor conceal the Truth when ye know (what it is). - 2:42

What he calls the "misunderstanding" by the liberals and 'ultra secularists', supposedly arising from 'bad wordings' by the present Ministry of the CTG, conceals a long history of conspiratorial assault on the 1997 draft of National Womens Development Policy by the Islamists and their henchmen. In 2004 the Khaleda-Nizami govt. badly mangled and doctored the Policy without consultation or public knowledge. This 2008 version is better than the sneaky 2004 Policy, but still a watered down version of 1997.

Women's organizations who had worked dilligently in formulating the 1997 Policy are up in arms for very good reasons. Their labor of love and dedication to both UN Charters and Coventions and our own culture are being mocked by these handful of fake Ulama and Mashayekhs, named All Muslims by Hannan. Women are angry at the govt. appeasement of the fake Ulama and letting them get away with their rowdy anti-woman demonstrations in the midst of "Emergency." [Consider the Govt. hypocrisy of University professors being clamped down and jailed for 'breaking' Emergency Rule!]

Hannan is the most shameless Muslim who would disseminate falsehoods knowing full well that it conceals truth. In this instance the concealment is designed to damage the human rights of half of the citizens of Bangladesh.

Be forwarned about the fake Ulama and Mashayekhs!

[mukto-mona] Re: Are we loosing DJU

"....but I salute Subash Bose & Bangabandhu." -S. Guha

Dear Sitangshuda:
Good to know your respect for B. Sheikh Mujib. I've 2 questions:

1. how do you like certain steps taken by the B.S. Mujib government
such as creating the Islamic Foundation, Madrassa Board, or joining
OIC summit in Lahore, Pakistan? What if I said those steps gradually
had also paved the way to the total Islamization of Bangladesh?

2. how do you view your "netri" Hasina's comment as a PM toward the H-
B-C United Alliance ("Hindu-Bouddha-Christian Oiky Joot") leaders in
NEW York in that "you cannot put your feet in two boats at the same
time." Clearly she's indicating certain's HBC "oikyo joot" leaders'
overtly pro-India policy.

I hope not to ask you any more questions on THIS thread. :-)

regards,
Jahed

[mukto-mona] Sibnarayan Ray Memorial Reading and Open Discussion

Dear Friends,

The memorial reading and the open discussion on the late Sibnarayan Ray, organized by Shabdaguchha and Muktodhara, was held on March 15, Saturday, in Jackson Heights, New York. The meeting was presided over by Syed Muhammad Ullah, where the opening remarks were made by Biswajit Saha, the proprietor of Muktodhara. Naznin Seamon, the assistant editor of Shabdaguchha, spoke about her acquaintance with Prof. Ray and how he came into publishing her first short story on Jijnasa, the literary journal that Sibnarayan Ray edited for more than 25 years. She also read from Dr. Goalm Murshid's article on Prof. Ray to give a clear picture about who Prof. Ray was and what was his contribution.
Prof. Husna Ara, Khorshedul Islam, Mohon Gomez, Tusher Gayen and Hassanal Abdullah were among the others who also took part in the discussion. They all emphasised on Prof. Ray's life-long dedication on freethinking, critical writings, radical humanism, poetry and philosophical essays along with his contribution to the Bengali literature as the editor of Jijnasa.  Rekha Ahmed, Sakina Deni and Hassanal Abdullah read from Prof. Ray's poetry.

Sincerely,

Editor, Shabdaguchha

Note: The Bengali version of this press release is attached as a pdf file, in case the editors of the Bengali News Papers and Literary Magazines are interested.
