Staged stoning at Daily Star

Believe it or not, but yesterday on the rooftop of Daily Star's office at Kawran bazaar there was a photo shoot of a woman being stoned following a fatwa by fundamentalists. This was a completely staged photoshoot and one of Star's young woman staff dressed up in a sari (village style) and posed as if she was being stoned. This is supposed to be the cover for the Friday Star weekend magazine. It is unfortunate to see the length we go to prove Bangladesh to be a hub of "Islamist fundamentalism" !Who needs enemies when we have ourselves!

Mr. Shamim
First of all you try to learn Islam. Islamic political system is better than any other political system in the world.
Your voice "Ban religious based political party" - tell me who to ban? who has that suprime power to ban? constitutionally? constitution will be changed again after the fall of poisonous Awami league.
The universal fact is that people in Bangladesh are not living under anyone's jamidary.

We should keep in context that Bangabandhu called the 1971 victims of rape his daughters. I know its not much consolation but it is still some consolation and we should not forget it...
10 BCL men rape girl
Farcical arbitration let 16 culprits get away with fine of Tk 10,000 each; victim's poor father dares not to file case
Sohrab Hossain, Patuakhali, Daily Star Sep 2009
Ten activists of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) allegedly gang-raped a teenage girl Friday night and were later handed down mere punishment at village arbitration arranged to ensure their escape by local Awami League leaders.
Family sources say the
Police also released two of the accused held on the spot while handing the victim over to her father early Saturday morning.
A band of 16 youths kidnapped the girl, a class VII student of Pakhimara in Kalapara upazila, Friday night when she was returning home on a rickshaw from a Puja mandap with her cousin Nasir Uddin.
The BCL men beat up Nasir, drove him away and took the girl to a nearby garden. Ten of them raped the girl until her relatives with police rushed to the scene to rescue her around 2:00am.
Sub-inspector Kabir Hossain of Kalapara police station held two of the culprits -- Rajib and Sohag -- from the spot but freed them later after handing over the girl to her family.
Later on Sunday, local
The village arbitration in a farcical judgement fined all the 16 Tk 10,000 each and that they all be whipped 100 times each.
But four days into the grisly incident the victim's father, a poor farmer, still does not dare to file a case.
He said, "Rakibul (
Rakibul Ahsan denied the allegation. He claims, "The youths did not rape the girl, they just made an attempt. We punished them so that they don't indulge into such activities in future."
The Kalapara AL leader also denied their political identity as BCL activists dubbing them as "spoilt brats".
Contacted, Kalapara police Officer-in-Charge (OC) Ishaq Ali said they released Rajib and Sohag as the victim's father did not file any complaint.
He says he does not know anything about the village arbitration, adding the police would not file any case of their own and "take legal steps if any complaint is filed".
The gang members were identified as Rajib, Rubel, Ratul, Pobitra, Mojibur, Omer, Rana, Sohel, Regan, Lalu, Jewel, Sohag, Bappi of Nayapara, Saiful and Munim of Madrasa Road in Kalapara upazila town and Al-Amin of Dhankhali.
CMC suspends four BCL men on rape charge

The
Sources in the college administration said the academic council at a meeting in the afternoon decided the suspension amid a daylong demonstration by the students who demanded punitive action against the Chhatra League men.
The students who were suspended are the college unit Chhatra League joint secretaries Asibul Islam Limon and Kazi Mohammed Foysal and activists Sohag and Rabbi. The college unit Chhatra League also expelled them on the same charges after a meeting held on Monday night.
The college principal, Professor Selim Mohammad Jahangir, told New Age they had decided to suspend the studentship of the four after a discussion and the disciplinary committee would make the final decision after further investigation.
The college unit Chhatra League general secretary, Fahad Nasif, said they had expelled the four from the organisation as the allegation brought against them was proved after preliminary investigation.
Students of the college earlier brought out a procession at the campus demanding punishment for the persons responsible for the incident. A human chain was also formed, a rally held and sit-in staged in front of the principal's office to push for the demand.
Superb... Ah, here is your democracy, brother! Courtesy Daily star 23/2/10 A good number of "highly democracy-minded" talk-show experts should be feeling mighty happy to see the matinee show of democracy ... the free flow of blood in the free-for-all show that is going on all over the country. It's a blockbuster, indeed. So, here is your democracy, brother, that you have been waiting for and canvassing for, since the fall of the "un-democratic, autocratic government of General Ershad." So, you must be happy now! Democracy let loose at last. Democracy gone berserk. From parliament to robber-infested parks, democracy is being practiced in full gusto in this country. The deaths, you ask? Fallout of democracy, perhaps? You see, the more there is death, the more solid would democracy become. That is a popular notion here. It is the ladder made of dead bodies that takes politicians to the citadel of power, isn't it? So, some faceless people will have to die. No big deal. They would die anyway ... in road accidents .... in launch capsizes ... of tuberculosis. Then, why not for the party? The beauty of politics here is that people are made to believe that there is glamour in dying for a cause like democracy. It would earn them the short-lived status of a hero, with photos coming out in newspapers for a couple of days. And electronic channels would show interviews with their wailing parents for the city audience. All for democracy, brother. Our right to know is ensured. Come to think of it, in their oppressive and lacklustre life, violent death on the altar of politics is a big achievement. They get such massive coverage! But, wait a minute. Where was this beautiful, blood-spattering, all-problem-solving, all-disease-healing panacea called democracy all these years? Why didn't we have the opportunity of seeing those hand guns, knives, cutters, bamboo clubs, bricks and stones and the filmy-style action in real life fights and real deaths for some years? Oh, I remember now! There was a lull for two years when the "most villainous," "non-political," "corrupt," "inefficient," "opportunistic," "ambitious," and "illegal" caretaker government had ruled the country. They had the audacity to deny us our "democratic" rights and stop the wonderful and exciting shows; the real fights on the streets with blood-chilling calls to become "Gazi" or "Shahid" ... that we watched from the safe distance of our office windows. Today, the whole world looks on in amazement at the demonstration of Bangladeshi brand of democracy. We may brand it "DemoBangla" or "Banglacracy," if you agree. It is indeed unprecedented ... unparalleled ... unbelievable ... and unheard of. The entire world sitting around the coliseum cheers the show of brute courage as party supporters club opponents to death ... the spilling of blood ... the chase and counter-chase on campus by over-aged student leaders and their supporters ... the eviction of one group from student halls by another ... and so on. All so familiar! Don't these remind us of those democratic days that existed before the caretaker government? The days of exploding bombs in 64 districts ... blowing up courtrooms ... killing judges ... cracking skulls of opponents ... discovering Hindu-Islamic militants ... bricks and stones flying ... police batons breaking ribs ... mass arrests of ordinary workers going home ... and last but not least ... the inevitable "bibriti of Babor"? Oh! How we missed everything! Thank you, God, that you have listened to our prayers and given us our wonderful democracy back once again! We were kind of suffocating in the state of tranquillity ... in the state of no action ... no excitement during the caretaker government. They were such spoilsports, really. But now, after long 2-3 years, tendon cutters ... throat slitters ... suicide bombers ... black-marketers ... river grabbers .... graveyard robbers ... forest eaters ... toll collectors ... religion peddlers et al are back in business. Now why shouldn't students of public universities do all these? Many of the senior politicians, especially those who were in student politics, have been unabashed toll collectors ... or indirect extortionists ... collecting monthly chanda from industrialists of Tejgaon, Tongi and Narayanganj and from those in their localities. Chandabaji had started on day two after our independence and it continues today. These politicians and student leaders of yester-years were also great beer-buddies (Hotel Intercontinental later Sheraton, Ruchita, Nightingale, Chalet etc) of corrupt businessmen who made them drunk every night and then gave them bag-full of money to get an import licence for TCB, Tibet, BCIC, BADC, BTMC, BJMC quota/allotment. Those licences and quota/allotments used to be sold in the black market. Oh, sorry, you can't touch them because now they are big guns and big goons in some big political party ... hence above the reach of the very weak hands of law. Is the term "reform" in politics synonymous with "blasphemy" in this country? If religious edicts could undergo reforms, why can't stale, age-old political system do so for the good of the country? How long shall we remain hostage to this debilitating "politics"? I was getting myself into the spirit of Amar Ekushey. Bangalis of the neo-consumerist age, our best stories are coming from colourful ads on TV. I whirled through all the channels, to catch the cream, the best ones on constant repeat.
Oh look, a white girl in a sari, standing in front of Shahid Minar. The camera pans back and it's a pseudo-UN congregation on the steps. We are the World. I switch over and there's a gorgeous restaging of all the classics of Bangla literature: Satyajit, Rabindranath, and ...cut to Shahid Minar. Ekushey in the era of "Brand
I'm getting myself ready for Boi Mela, Probhat Feri, or at least the obligatory kurta pajama. But my SMS and email accounts are rudely interrupting with some reality doses. The news comes in drips, pushing through a rigid media blackout. Bengali settlers attacking Jumma (Pahari) homes in Sajek.
The same Sajek that was the scene of anti-Pahari arson rampages in 2008. Now the damage was even more widespread. Two hundred homes burnt in one day. A Buddhist temple allegedly burnt as well.
And then, sometime during the day, security forces fire on demonstrators. Later, the media tells us they fired on Paharis fighting with Bengalis. How odd then, that all the dead and wounded are Pahari. Why aren't there are any Bengali settlers who were hurt?
The narrative keeps changing, as the media spin cycle begins. But none of the spin is on the side of the Paharis. ATN Bangla's first report says: "One killed in Pahari-Bangali feud. 15 injured including 4 army officers. Homes burnt." RTV says: "Pahari-Bangali clash. 1 killed." The language is clever, a feud and a clash is between two equal parties. If you read these reports only, and never visit CHT, you would never have any idea how much muscle is on the side of the Bengalis.
Only later, the next day, do the newspapers begin to admit that the dead are all Pahari, and most of the wounded as well. I kept scanning the media, thinking that someone somewhere would say at least one word about the fact that, we Bengalis may have been the aggressors in this and other cases.
Perhaps there was some extra caution on this day. It's Ekushey. There are four names to remember, and a red letter year. Salam, Barkat, Rafiq, Jabbar. 1952. How inconvenient to have to add Buddhabati, Laxmi, Liton, Bana Shanti, and Nutunjoy Chakma. 2010. Bengalis killing non-Bengalis. On Ekushey February. It won't match with that beautiful national narrative. There's sponsorship money at stake, get your priorities right.
Watching some senior journalists has been very instructive. They seem to be bending over backwards to see things only from the Bengali settlers eyes: "Things were not clear," Pahari "miscreants" attacked us, state forces had been "forced" to fire, etc. Aggressors paint themselves as Victims.
I was almost convinced that the Paharis must have been in the wrong. It didn't seem to matter after reading our media, that they were facing a historic thirty year process of land grabbing by Bengali settlers, backed by the muscle and money of the state. It didn't matter that the dead and wounded were overwhelmingly Pahari. According to our fearless and neutral media, the Paharis must have started it. There could be no other version of this story.
I remember veteran journalists who had always been critics of the abuse of state power in the recent past. Why was it so difficult for them to believe, now, that the Paharis could be the victims of decades of marginalisation and racism? That Bengali racism has repeatedly created flash points and nightmares like Sajek. And in the absence of implementation of the 1997 Accord (still waiting after 13 years), the Paharis will continue to face onslaughts of Bengali muscle power.
But hey, maybe all this myopia was temporary, just for Ekushey. Maybe tomorrow, we'll start looking in the mirror again.
Well whats the big deal!
Businessman dies in AL-BNP clash
