[ALOCHONA] Japan's DoCoMo to buy 30% stake in AKTEL

Japan's DoCoMo to buy 30% stake in AKTEL

NTT DoCoMo, Japan's largest wireless operator, has agreed to pay $350 million to buy AK Khan & Co's 30 percent stake in mobile-phone carrier TM International (Bangladesh) that operates AKTEL.

The purchase is expected to be completed by the year-end, Tokyo-based DoCoMo said in a statement to the Tokyo Stock Exchange Monday.

Fazlur Rahman, director (co-ordination and regulatory affairs) of AKTEL, told bdnews24.com: "We have faxed a letter to BTRC, seeking approval for the sale of the shares."

The remaining 70 percent of AKTEL is owned by TM International (Bangladesh), which was spun off from Telekom Malaysia.

AKTEL is the third largest mobile service provider after Grameenphone and Banglalink in Bangladesh. According to BTRC statistics, AKTEL has recorded 7.71 million subscribers until May.

According to Bloomberg, the 30 percent stake gives DoCoMo access to a faster-growing market than Japan. The offer is 18 percent less than the $425 million that Reuters reported in June DoCoMo was prepared to pay.

In the statement, DoCoMo said it would participate in TMIB's management and actively draw on its expertise to enhance the company's business in the fast-growing Bangladeshi mobile telecommunications market."

DoCoMo is the world's leading mobile communications company that serves over 53 million customers, including 44 million people subscribing to FOMA™, launched as the world's first 3G mobile service based on W-CDMA in 2001.

DoCoMo is listed on the Tokyo, London and New York stock exchanges.

[ALOCHONA] Sheik Hasina is a perfect Leader!

The daughter of the father of our nation is a very kind hearted, lovely women, a real housewife like many of ours, after all, she has full of affections like our grandmas, forget about being a good wife!
We hope she will stick with it forever by staying with her own family members overseas. Bangladeshi people once again got opportunity to compare both leaders. As a perfect daughter of a great leader who fought for freedom of a nation throughout his life, she like her dad doesn't want to remain herself in a small cottage, moreover, she carries freedom fighters or shahidi 'chetona', how dare she could stay in jail without ferrying this chetona days and nights long!

Almighty Lord shows His enormous mercy on her many times! This time again!

As per our honest, corrupt-free, 'satyabadi' lawyers along with her own Sheikh bhathija Barrister Taposh, she had completely lost her hearing, i.e. she was unable to hear anything during her last minute jail-life. But thanks God, right after released from the jail, after arrival in the USA, she started hearing everything, even BBC's journalist whispered question.

Our future leader, Harvard graduate Joy Wajeed surely said a daughter of the father of a nation can't deal with any conspiracy. That's why she is very silent now, playing with her grand kids, showing her lovely 'momota' to them let alone poor peoples struggling to eat a piece of bread! Let it be done by 'sick lady' Khaleda Zia who doesn't want to leave her husband's country.

Prison can make a talkative person dumb. Psychologist may consider to prescribe this new great medicine for their next patients.

We hope and pray for her rest in peace in her dreamland what she had proved many times during her regime-golden age in the era of 1996~2001. Even she transferred her prime ministrial office for a month long in USA. Let her be playing with our few future leaders continuously not playing 14 crore peoples' fate.

We miss you, Netri. You are a perfect BALer leader!

Re: [ALOCHONA] Re: Moeen U Ahmed in Kuwait

Dear Mr. Saeedurrahman,

I agree with all of your points and I can appreciate your concerns about the long term repercussions of a nation under army rule. And your examples of other nations under army rule are valid too. In the end, I do think that the natural laws of democracy should prevail in Bangladesh.

But I have such bitter taste of democracy of the past 16 years, that I am not willing to see the BNP and AL of past return. Foremost, these organizations require new leadership and without doubt they should implement internal reforms. I also am convinced that these organizations have such poor character that the only way to reform them is thru pressure - not dialogue. If they would respond to dialuge, we would not even require 1-11. It is like dialogue with a serial rapist - utterly useless. Gundas and mastaans only respond to violence, then some more violence and finally to pressure and maybe a dhomok at the end.
Regarding the economy; inflation is worldwide, caused by increased demand for food and also increased prices of energy. Further two natural disasters in a single year has greatly hampered the economy. The arresting of corrupt businessmen has added additional strains on the economy. The current govt. is responding accordingly in the next budget by focusing on food security and social welfare.

I do think that the CTG has stumbled in their attempts to clean up the system. But I think they also got rid of the problematic advisors like Moinul Hossain, Geete Ara, etc and replaced them with better ones like the current Zillur Rahman. This is accountability at its best - which was barely exercised under democracy.

The CTG has also made other mistakes like demolition of the Rangs building or clearing of the hawkers from Dhaka. However, on the whole this government has done a great job.

In conclusion, a corrupt army would be just as bad as a corrupt politicians, but I have great faith in people like Dr. Fakhruddin.  The day the army becomes out of control - I believe Dr. Ahmed will resign and that is when we should turn against the army. But as long as the army supports good people like Dr. Ahmed, our honorable Finance advisor, our hard working foreign advisor and commerce advisors, our fantastic WTO negotiatior - Dr. Bhattacharya in Geneva, men of great education, of integrity and of a history of honorable service to the nation - I think we will be fine. I hope you will see the same.

Dear Mr. Rahim

I will not disagree with you at all. Theoretically and ideally you are right. But see what is practically happening. Some leaders in both the major parties started talking about reforms till 2 nethris went to jail. In my opinion, and I may be wrong, it was not at all required at that time to send them to jail. Either this action should have taken immediately after 1/11 or should have taken after making strong cases. What was the result of that? People even stopped talking about reforms. All the public attention was diverted to the nethris. What happened to the reformists? The poor guys Ц they found it difficult to save their skin. All these years what AL and BNP had been doing? If they were in Power they used all their means, foul or fair, to remain in power. And if they were in opposition, they did everything possible, foul or fair, to drag down the other party out of power. But Mr. Rahim, tell me honestly, is not the present junta doing the same thing. Do you think Hasina came out of jail on public pressure? Absolutely not. There is an underhand arrangement.

Mr. Rahim you think that the present government should remain in power till the political parties in the country start practicing real democracy inside and outside etc.etc. I, also will tell you the same thing. But tell me, is there any sign of it in the last 16/17 months? Not at all. With all due respect should I tell you that to learn swimming you have to get into waters. You can not first learn swimming and then get into waters. Even if I take your words does anybody have a time frame when our political parties will learn democracy and then we will have the election? Can our nation wait that long with the present stagnant economy?

We need not to go far past; the recent history has a very bad record of Army rule at the least in South Asia. Look at every Army ruler, before relinquishing power, either they destroyed themselves or destroyed the nation or destroyed the both. Be it be Ayub, Yayha, Zia Huq, Zia Rahman, Irshad or for that matter Mushraff.  There is no exception. Look deeply how all of them had to leave power. Of course, I want one exception. I want Moeen to leave power with honor and dignity. I only fear he will not. He has also ambitions like others but unfortunately he does not posses those talents. I will not debate that what he did at juncture was right or wrong. I will not debate that he should have taken this step earlier. I believe he rose at the right moment. I also believe that enough is enough. Now is the time to say Good Bye.

You know Army is considered the most disciplined organization in any country. We can afford the mistakes of others (specifically the political parties) but you can not at all at all afford the mistakes by Army. And one thing more the Army gets corrupted if it remains in civilian touch for a long time.

With all due respect

Saeed

Let me tell you that I like many others and unlike very handful, I call spade a spade. I will appreciate a person; let it be Tom or Harry, if he or she is doing well for the country. In the same token if someone in my opinion (mind you I said in my opinion, somebody may differ with me) has been other way around, I simply can not appreciate it. For example, I can appreciate Hussain Mohammad Irshad for improving the communication system in the country but cannot appreciate him for his other deeds. This is point many of us are trying to make. We don't try to justify the wrongs of the politicians rather we are critical of them. But for some handful of people, good or bad Gen. Moeen is the best. They are trying to justify all his deeds and all his misdeeds. I again pose you the same question, nobody asked you that why the brave
> Gen. choose Crowne Plaza for his meeting. (I think by this time he would have a retired Gen. had he not extended his tenure himself) You justify it by claiming that this is the cheapest 5 star hotel in Kuwait. Thanks God, hundred times that you did not claim that it was a free treat from Hotel Crowne Plaza. Who could have challenged if you had said so. You are so blind with the deeds or misdeeds of the Gen. that you think 200 is the smallest gathering. Man, who paid the bills. Of course it was paid by the Embassy of Bangladesh on Government of Bangladesh account. When Hasina was in Kuwait, such expenditures were borne by AL affiliated businessmen. (These are your words not mine).

How many are put behind jails in the past few days fearing there may be an agitation in favor of any political party? What is the difference between the past and the present? Why we have to harp beautiful songs for this act of bravery?

But I believe you can still understand the present situation in the country by the electronic media which you have access to. See and read how many people have gone below the poverty level during the past 15/16 months. These are not my words neither these are the words of any political party.

You further said see how many party fruitcakes and party dalals turn up in the VIP lounge when an AL or BNP MP or Minister turns up. I pose you the same question, how many dalals of brave Gen. Moeen turned up at Kuwait Airport when he turned up.

Re: [ALOCHONA] Re: Moeen U Ahmed in Kuwait

Mr. Khundkar,

You cite interesting psychology - I'll have to read up on it. I hope you will share your thoughts on the psyche and psychology of the Bangladeshi - its interesting and certainly worth discussing.

Regarding your major point about failing to criticize emperors without clothes - I would gladly criticize such emperors. But we live in a universe where emperors of past were the only ones wearing clothes while the citizens were paraded in hunger and destitution.

The bar in our politics is so low that the mere thought of someone coming in and attempting to clean up the system is audacity beyond imagination. That is what I admire and my true feeling is that this work must come to its completion, which I estimate should take at least another 5 years and a certain level of brutal discourse.

Dear Mr. Saeed Rehman:
I think you have articulated very well for all of us who are becoming
increasingly dismayed at the level of discourse among Bengalis of our class,
the so-called educated, most successful etc, etc.

In most respects, notwithstanding small changes in nomenclature and names of
principals, the discourse has remained wherever, it has been for the last two
hundred years or more. Whenenever a new govt comes a section of our
intelligentsia rise to become courtiers to the new order. Praising to high
heaven, singing odes, composing poems & making a fetish of small
differences*.

Very few people have the integrity/courage to tell the Emperor that he is not
wearing any clothes. Perhaps I am being unfair in singling out our fellow
Alochoks because it really goes beyond into our psyche as a nation. Freud would
have had a field day analyzing all of us.

Thanks again

Robin Khundkar

[To the last point on small differences, I recommend highly, a slim volume by
Sigmund Freud, "Civilization and Its Discontents" (1929-1930). Freud
introduces a concept of what he calls "Narcissm of Small
Differences". It describes the manner in which our negative feelings are
sometimes directed at people who resemble us, while we take pride from the
"small differences" that distinguish us from them] Source Wikepedia
