[ALOCHONA] TIME: Everything’s Tracked- Get Over It

TIME: Everything's Tracked- Get Over It

In an astounding cover story for the March 21 issue of TIME called 'Your Data for Sale,' author Joel Stein tells readers to simply "get over" constant surveillance. The tagline, "Everything about you is being tracked– get over it" puts the issue in your face. Yeah, get over it, and the TSA porno-scanners and grope-downs, too.

Newsweek, like TIME, another Skull and Bones-dominated media organ, similarly published a shocker in 2009 with its cover story, 'The Case for Killing Granny,' preparing the masses to simply accept massive shifts in society's norms as if it were a trifling occurrence. Unauthorized NSA wiretapping and other related surveillance (started long ago) was at least controversial during the Bush Administration, though it has unabashedly continued under Obama.

TIME magazine, March 21, 2011

In an promotional interview with CNN about the article, author Joel Stein makes light of the fact that his social security number (and lots of other personal data), as well as that of his family members, were easily found online. Stein and CNN host Kiran Chetry giggle like schoolgirls about Facebook's exploitation of personal data, and the many other data-mining companies who keep "permanent files" on us. Stein even quips that he has "blackmail material" now on his mother and sister, whose SSN numbers he obtained during his research. Stein further called personalized-ads on systems like Google's G-MAIL "kinda cool." That's right, now that we're at the heart of a big brother system, 1984 is kinda cute-and-fuzzy.

Gadget, covering the upcoming TIME article, has posted an article 'How to Opt Out of Everything Online' with information on how to opt-out from many of the online data companies. Below is the first of a long-list of resources and/or preference settings where you can lobby to take yourself off of the data-mining lists:

Network Advertising Initiative

Oh man, strap in for this one. The NAI Opt-out Tool shows you all the big-name marketing companies that have installed tracking cookies on your computer and lets you opt out of some or all of them in one fell swoop.

While these options may improve some aspects of online privacy, don't hold your breath. Your ISPs alone are likely storing complete records of everything you do, to say nothing of what the NSA and other intelligence outlets have underway.

It would seem the death of privacy and the 4th amendment is officially upon us. Morever, it's something to be passively accepted and even laughed about. The TIME story has a publish date of March 21, 2011; the detailed story text is not yet available.

Re: [ALOCHONA] Prof Anu Muhammad on Grameen episode

Anu Muhammad is an Economist by profession and an activist. He used to be a left, has been active since long, guess much before Yunus become a professor or a PHD. So far he only makes some noise and claims that has effectively stopped some action or policy of the governments. Yet miserably failed to build an institution that we all can rely or feel proud of. His tel gas rakhya committee off and on make some moves but nothing serious. If one looks at his website (meghbarta) soon can understand - nothing comprehensive even substantive. It means he does not want to educate his people through a concerted effort. Read few of his books, less research based, more rhetoric.

If Dr. yunus built his empire with the foreign help, (i agree) what stopped AM to build an institution from his own society, can't he rely on us, our 2 or 10 taka, infact he could not motivate, couldn't be an inspiration. Often his moves on our energy I find doubtful and dubious, whom he is protecting? Almost 40 years, he couldnt create a challange to our policy makers dealing with our energy sector as he should have been. He failed himself and failed us. Yet, I appreciate his effrot as nai mamar theke kana mama ei deshe.

Badruddin Umar, Akash they couldn't live up to our expectation what they have once created. As a fellow human and their country man I simply pitty them (they wasted their talent and labour).

Latest is Atiar Rahman- man, his 'nodi and manush' ideas bogged down to help only millions to value less scripts, loose for their life time. That was criminal negligence (if I do not call it deliberate attempt) to allow commercial banks to use depositors funds to put in DSE. Today banks has no cash to do their normal consumer financing(I was told yesterday -13th march, by a big bank that BB has asked them to stop giving loan). He made a biggest loss for BB in 2010 fiscal year.
How much you can say on these economists often their role and actions appears as dubious and cruel to our people.

World bank was created to help Europe recover under Marshal plan, lots of its financing very politically motivated, yet it helps. Today UN is another failed common body, yet we pin our hope. West becoming more corrupt and oppressive, yet for many aspects we look up to them. Grameen is no different. But Anu's intention was not much different from our vindictive political culture and practice.
Thanks.

[ALOCHONA] Equipment from India arrives

Equipment from India arrives

Road route not ready yet to take those to power plant site

Vessels carrying heavy equipment for a power plant in Agartala of India arrive at the Ashuganj river port in Brahmanbaria. The transshipment of the equipment was agreed upon during Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's last visit to India.

Two ships carrying eight heavy equipment for the proposed Palatana Power Plant in Indian state of Tripura have arrived at Ashuganj River Port from Kolkata. The equipment will be transshipped to the Tripura's state capital Agartala by Ashuganj-Akhaura road.

However, the transit will take some time, as the road and the terminal at Ashuganj port require some repair work to carry such heavy equipment, said Subon Kumar Sheel, supervisor of an Indian hydraulic excel trailer. Md Jahangir Alam, executive engineer of Brahmanbaria Roads and Highways, said 70 percent of the development work of Ashuganj-Akhaura road is complete. The work of finishing a diversion road is going on.

The two ships carrying the equipment reached the Ashuganj port on Wednesday and Saturday.Over 100 heavy equipment of power plant will be transported to Agartala from West Bengal through Ashuganj-Akhaura road. They will be first brought to Ashuganj by ships from Khidirpur of India. Ten 130-wheeler Indian hydraulic excel trailers, each having capacity to lift 400 tonnes at a time, will carry the equipment from Ashuganj port to Agartala under Indian supervision.

The transit will start after the deputy commissioner (DC) and the superintendent of police of Brahmanbaria visit the port along with the Akhaura Land Port customs officer, Indian sources said. Contacted, Brahmanbaria DC Md Abdul Mannan said an Indian team met him and informed him about the arrival of the ships at Ashuganj port, but he is yet to get any official order for their transit.

Foundation of the 4,500 crore rupee Palatana Power Plant was laid back in 2005 but a major roadblock had been the transport of heavy equipment from Kolkata to Tripura. The problem was solved when Bangladesh agreed to allow transshipment through an Indo-Bangla accord during Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's visit to New Delhi in January last year.

[ALOCHONA] Yunus is a political victim:British MPs, academics

Lord Avebury, vice-chair of the UK Parliamentary Human Rights Group, has said the removal of Grameen founder Prof Muhammad Yunus by the government from his post raises serious concerns about the creeping politicisation of development work and civil society in Bangladesh.

In a joint statement in London issued on March 11, Avebury and some British MPs and academics said the microcredit approach to poverty reduction pioneered by Prof Yunus is an important innovation in the fight against poverty.

There are 8 million women borrowers in Bangladesh and the basic idea of microcredit has been copied by many other public and private agencies across the world, Avebury said. "At the same time, advocates of microcredit have sometimes made exaggerated claims about its efficacy, and in some countries the sector itself has been poorly regulated," he said.

He, however, said the government's decision to take action against Yunus now appears to be motivated more by a desire to gain short term political capital by cashing in on a current global microfinance media backlash, than by evidence of any wrongdoing.

"No substantive reasons have been given for the sacking, nor has there been an opportunity for Professor Yunus to answer any criticisms of his performance as managing director," he said. "It looks as though the government is punishing him for attempting to form a new political party in 2007 that could have challenged the existing two party system, rather than for proof of any wrongdoing," he said in the statement.

The statement is also supported and consented by Peter Bottomley MP, Charles Tannock MEP, Jeremy Corbyn MP, Prof Geoff Wood and Dr Joe Devine of Bath University, Prof David Lewis of London School of Economics, Maggie Bowden, general secretary, Liberation (human rights organisation), and Sadat Sayeed, barrister at Garden Court Chambers, Lincoln's Inn.

[ALOCHONA] Mirror, mirror on the wall, who’s the Noblest of them all?

Mirror, mirror on the wall, who's the Noblest of them all?

by Rahnuma Ahmed

I'D THOUGHT of writing about the Nobel Laureate's ouster from the Grameen Bank last week, but fever intervened.

Mine has receded, the government's, however, has not. Theirs is prolonged, one that continues. High state and party functionaries have repeatedly spoken of 'irregularities' with a feverish zeal as the Bangladesh Bank relieved Dr Muhammad Yunus of his duties as managing director of the Grameen Bank.

He had violated the country's retirement law, they said. Sixty years is the age limit but Yunus was 70. This made him 'too old' to be the Grameen Bank's chief, said the finance minister. He should have left ten years ago, said the Bangladesh Bank, instead of staying on 'illegally' for an extra ten years.

In a writ filed at the High Court, Yunus's defence lawyers argued that the Bangladesh Bank's directive was illegal. No show-cause notice had been served, this made his removal 'illegal, mala fide and arbitrary.' A week later, on March 8, Dr Yunus lost his High Court appeal when the judge ruled, 'Professor Yunus has been continuing in his job with no legal basis, therefore his petition has been rejected.' Neither Yunus nor any of his senior lawyers were present at the court. In recent months, the independence of the judiciary has been a matter of grave concern.

Yunus and nine members of the board of directors have filed an appeal with the Supreme Court challenging the High Court's order. A full bench hearing is scheduled for March 15. The High Court's decision was 'entirely perverse' said Dr Yunus and the members of his board, it was passed without issuing any ruling.

The alignment of local, national and global influentials against, and in support of, Yunus is telling. The prime minister's son Sajeeb Wajed, in an e-mail sent to international agencies, human rights organisations, US state department officials and prominent persons, wrote: Yunus's only stature in Bangladesh is that of a 'Nobel prize winner', politically speaking, he's a 'non-entity'. Accusing the Grameen Bank of 'massive financial improprieties', 'tax evasion' and 'embezzlement', Sajeeb reminded us that despite being 'criminal' offences, the government has not taken any 'punitive' action against Yunus. Its only concern is to 'prevent further abuse of microcredit borrowers' (dated March 5, 2011).

As I read the e-mail, I mulled, is this not the same prime ministerial offspring against whom allegations of taking a $2 million bribe from Chevron surfaced recently? A deal reportedly brokered by Dr Tawfiq-e-Elahi Chowdhury, the prime minister's energy adviser, a la, also, of WikiLeaks fame? ('People's resistance to global capital and government collaboration is vindicated', WikiLeaks Bangladesh I, New Age, December 27, 2010). Did not the news item (December 17, 2010) later land the editor of Amar Desh in jail? At least, that's the connection made by some.

Sajeeb's point about governmental concern over 'abuse' is difficult to sustain as news reports appear of attacks by ruling party affiliates on human chains formed to protest Dr Yunus's removal. In Kishoreganj, activists of the Bangladesh Chhatra League and the Bangladesh Krishak League snatched banners and festoons from human chain participants and set them on fire (The Daily Star, March 12). In Barisal, BCL activists attacked Grameen Bank employees and stakeholders, snatched their banner and chased them away (The Daily Star, March 12).

I don't know how convinced the recipient's of Sajeeb's e-mail were because statements of support for Dr Yunus have kept pouring in from members of the global elite. US Senator John Kerry, who heads the powerful foreign relations committee, in a statement, expressed his 'deep concern' at efforts to remove Yunus from the Grameen Bank. He hoped both sides could reach a 'compromise' so that the Grameen Bank could maintain its 'autonomy and effectiveness'; he added, the international community would 'watch the situation closely.' The US secretary of state, Hillary Clinton, called Professor Yunus to show her 'support' for his ongoing efforts, to express her concern over the developments that have taken place. Yunus's international allies have organised themselves as Friends of Grameen, 'an elite support group' of internationally renowned lawyers, academics, former politicians and businesspeople including Mary Robinson, former Irish president, and James Wolfensohn, former World Bank president (Chris Barth, Forbes, March 8). It was their duty to protect the integrity of Professor Yunus, and the independence of the Grameen Bank, said Wolfensohn. Development projects should be run by 'locals', he said, while explaining Yunus's importance as a role model; those locals who do the 'best work' should be rewarded.

But the tone and tenor of the government's position had been set in place earlier, in November last year, after the release of a Norwegian documentary which alleged that the bank had shifted the funds provided by Norway's aid agency Norad, from one legal entity to another, for tax purposes. A Norwegian government investigation subsequently cleared Yunus of these allegations, but prime minister Sheikh Hasina's harsh words, Yunus and the Grameen Bank were 'sucking blood from the poor', still reverberate. They find material expression in the events outlined above, which co-exist parallely with the government's continued support of microcredit programmes and projects in both the governmental, and non-governmental, sector.

It is a contradiction which has led to questions being raised by critics of the government and of its imperial backers. If Dr Yunus is a blood-sucker of the poor, why does the government not initiate a detailed and exhaustive investigation of the Grameen Bank's microlending practices, asks economist Anu Muhammad. Why have the Bangladesh Bank's audit reports of Grameen been kept secret? If allegations against the microcredit model, against the Grameen Bank's irregularities are not properly investigated and made public, writes Anu, the government's decision is liable to be interpreted as stemming from a 'personal' conflict, aimed at nothing more than a takeover of the bank by other interested quarters. At benefiting a different set of people ('Khudro Reen Model Hya, Yunus Na — Keno?' bdnews24.com, March 10).

While Nurul Kabir, the editor of this paper, in a live TV talk show, posed the question thus, if the government is taking an anti-imperialist stance, should it not be extended to asserting control over the country's natural resources? Why are their extraction and the benefits to be attained being turned over to transnational and multinational companies, and to their national accomplices?

Suspicions about it being a personal conflict were revived when the attorney general said after the High Court's decision, 'if anybody in Bangladesh deserves the Nobel Peace Prize', it's Sheikh Hasina and Santu Larma, they deserve it for 'what they did', they brought peace to the Chittagong Hill Tracts, unlike Yunus, who apparently got it for the position or office ('managing director') which he held. This has given rise to pop psychologistic theories in which both international media and overnight national experts have contributed; a Los Angeles Times report informs us that hingsha, jealousy, vindictiveness, is a hallmark of Bangladeshi national politics, citing a Bangladeshi academic who says, hingsha is a 'very active part of the culture of our society' ('Nobel Laureate economist Yunus may be a victim of petty jealousy', March 6). Fake explanations as far as I'm concerned, for, as I argued in WikiLeaks Bangladesh I, the so-called 'battling begums' discarded their hingsha at the drop of the US ambassador's hat, unitedly falling in line with his suggestions regarding Asia Energy's open-pit mining project.

Others point to Yunus's failed attempts at forming a political party during the Fakhruddin-led military installed caretaker regime's period of rule (2007-2008), when the minus-two formula—getting rid of the battling begums and their respective political parties—had been put in play, apparently with the backing of western governments and international agencies, admitted as much by the World Bank vice-president Praful C Patel on a visit to Dhaka in December 2007. 'What [had] looked possible before,' he said, 'like the minus-two approach' no longer seems possible ('Re-constructing the nation. Imperial designers at work', New Age, December 22, 2008). If that is indeed the case, I cannot help but wonder whether Sheikh Hasina is still peeved at that, whether Dr Yunus's public humiliation springs from past events, or whether, new precipitative events have occurred since. More recently. We will not know with certainty unless someone in the know thinks it is the public's right to know.

Microcredit empowers women. By enabling poor women to make economic decisions and to increase family income, it helps them to break out of the cycle of poverty and patriarchy, has been Grameen's logo. A message put across rather emotively (and orientalistically, too) in a recent article appealing to all to fight against what is 'taking place right now in Dhaka.' Vivian Norris writes, 'How many of us in the so-called "developed" world know what it feels like to be considered less valuable than a cow? How many of us hide our faces and stare at the ground because we have never been spoken to, nor asked our advice or point of view?' (Huffington Post, March 9).

But, while it is true, as anthropologist Lamia Karim points out in her highly insightful doctoral study of microcredit and the Grameen Bank, that Grameen has taught women the importance of managing money, of keeping basic account of expenditures, that it has introduced some new forms of social identity among village women (weekly meetings where women can speak without men dominating), has challenged social conventions by making it obligatory for women to utter their own, and their husbands names publicly and so on, Grameen, and other NGOs which advance microcredit, manipulate cultural notions of 'women's honor and shame in the furtherance of their capitalist goals.' Although Grameen insists that in spite of forwarding non-collateral loans to women (97 per cent of its borrowers are women) it has a 98 per cent recovery rate, in reality, writes Lamia, it is the (traditional) honour and shame codes that 'act as the collateral' of loans forwarded by modern institutions like Grameen. Poor women police other poor women, they evict poorer members from the group in fear of losing future income, these include women marching off together to scold the defaulting woman, shaming her or her husband in a public place, going through her possessions if she cannot pay the full instalment, taking away her possessions which range from her gold nose-ring (symbol of marital status, its removal signals divorce or widowhood) to the family's rice, grains, cows, chicks. In cases of large default, the defaulting member's house is broken and sold off, the 'ultimate shame of dishonor in rural society.'

Alfred Nobel's fortune, bequeathed to those who benefit humanity through science, literature and efforts to promote peace, was made from the invention of dynamite. It is a product that is not known for having led to peace, either then, or now.

[ALOCHONA] Pakistanization of Indonesia?

Thanks for quoting the Verse from Qoraan. There is also a HaDees about it.
When a Moslim had declared some Moslims, Koffaar, the Prophet had said, ...
"Only Allah has right to decide, who is really Moslim and who is not. Do not take His this right away from Him ...!"

Hannan feels no moral obligation to follow the Truth as directed by Allah's message in the Holy Qur'an.

> What we have in Bangladesh is the following, and it is what we need to stop: A Matter of Grave Concern ! Background: There were 36 attacks or attempts against the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community during the BNP coalition Government in between 2003 to 2006. These were carried out regularly under the banner of 'Khatme Nabuwwat' organisation. Two radical Maulvis were leading the movement. 1. Maulvi Mahmudul Hasan Mumtazi and 2. Maulvi Noor Hussain Noorani. They staged many demonstrations through the Madrasa students and tried to influence the upper class policy-makers of that regime. Fortunately, the Civil Society, Intelligentsia and the Media played a vital role to shun the radical approach to the issue. Maulvi Noorani led many of the agitations and even mentioned the name of Tareq Zia openly as their Ameer/leader and friend on one occasion (on video record). He even mentioned the name of Gen Rumi to impress the Satkhira journalists(on video record as well). However, all these were clearly political tactics and had nothing to do with religion. The educated section of the society shunned all these heinous activities and they became mum. From Jan 2007 to Dec 2008 , during the Interim period no organised movements were launched against Ahmadies. Again from the beginning of this Government till last month we did not see any activity of this radical groups except some sporadic incidents at Brahmanbaria, Ambernagar (Noakhali) and Chantara under Ghatail. After a silence of four and half years suddenly the anti-Ahmadiyya movement has started to stretch the muscles from Gazipur District and the same Maulvi Noorani is again in the driving seat. The recent event: The Ahmadiyya Muslim Jama'at, Bangladesh sought permission from the Gazipur District authorities to hold their 87th Annual Jalsa(Convention) at Rover Scout Training Centre at Bahadurpur, Gazipur. After a month-long scrutinising and verifying (through police), the Deputy Commissioner Mr. Kamaluddin Taluqdar gave his written permission through his Nazir (NDC). The Convention was accordingly scheduled for three days from the 6th to the 8th of February, 2011. At the last moment, on the 6th February noon, the police came to the Jalsa Compound where thousands of Ahmadies were assembled and announced the cancellation of the earlier permission. As a cause they mentioned that, the local residents of the area lodged a complain against the holding of the Ahmadiyya Jalsa and due to this they are imposing section 144 at Bahadurpur. The police were very harsh in their behaviour during the process. Ahmadies, being law-abiding peace-loving loyal citizens, showed utmost patience and left the premises in utter sorrow and tears. The women and children suffered most, as they had to walk with their belongings a long distance to the main road. The remaining Jalsa attendance was curtailed into half and was held at the National Headquarters in Dhaka peacefully. We were very sorry to face such a behaviour from the administration during the present Government. It was a bolt from the blue for us, as the present Government is pledge-bound to ensure the freedom of religion and belief to all citizens. The latest development: To our surprise we have seen in a video footage the Gazipur DC and SP attending and speaking in a anti-Ahmadiyya rally of the radical Mullahs at the same venue just eleven(11) days after our Jalsa! This was held on the 17th Feb at the Rover Scout Centre. The SP speaks in uniform openly that it was a mistake to allow the "Qadiani" (Ahmadiyya) Jalsa at the first place. He congratulates the gathering on organising their programme on his own behalf and on behalf of the administration. The DC speaks very diplomatically about the whole issue. The organiser praises both the honoured guests as defenders of Faith and Religion. In their presence, communal slogans were raised calling, "Qadianider Astana Jalie' dao puriye' dao" repeatedly, meaning, 'burn down and destroy the Qadiani dens'. Neither of these two Government officers speak against such heinous act in their presence!! Not only that terming Ahmadies as "enemies of Islam" the SP called for Jihad against them and said if necessary he will fight against them along with the "Ualamas". The SP praises the present PM being a very devout, pious and practising Muslim. This was a clear political manoeuvring he was trying in front of the Madrasa students/teachers. The main speaker was announced as 'Maulana Nurul Islam Ulipuri' who along with others went on with their usual hate speeches in the Seerat Mahfil. The most notable part was Maulvi Noorani was sitting on the main stage prominently along with few others. In this video, one can clearly see, it is the same old wine in a new bottle. I sincerely believe, this is the back-door entrance of the radicals into mainstream politics. Pakistan has gone to the drain in a similar process. Being loyal and patriot Bangladeshi citizens, should we keep silent? We have the video clips, if you want or can arrange a gathering of som

Next thing we will hear that no Bangladeshi at all got killed by the BSF in the border; everything is a propaganda of war criminals.

Stupidity of BAAAAAAAAL again not to recognize that the whole shenanigan about Felani was a cash paid for drama! I was suspected the authenticity of the picture and the follow-up got more and more bizarre!

More on Sarmila Bose from me later.

Dear Mr. Alam,
Thanks for your mail. You are right that Sharmila Bose and others are promoting their hidden agenda in a very sutle way to protect the Bangladesh war criminals. Its irony that she is using organization like Asia Wilson Center in the USA capital to misguide the opion maker.
We must spaek out against the heinous design of the Bangladesh war criminals.

[ALOCHONA] Peter King Hearings

                 Friends:

You have to know about American history in order to appreciate the context of this cartoon. Please give yourself the lesson (by doing an internet search) on Senator Joe McCarthy and his Commie Witch-Hunt and un-American activities in the 1950's at the height of the Cold War. It was a devastating life-ruining experience for many a talented Americans.

Here the cartoon is echoing just the kind of language used at the McCarthy hearings.

[ALOCHONA] RE: FW: Pakistanization of Indonesia?

Mr. Shah Abdul Hannan is supposedly the intellectual leader of the Jamaatis, a banned political party in Bangladesh.  His singleminded mission in life is to spread hatred among people, so much hatred that they are driven by frenzy to kill other human beings. The most successful feat of his mission was accomplished in the Genocide, 1971.  In this mission his parom Guru is Abul 'ala Moududi, the infamous founder of Jamaat.  Hannan feels no moral obligation to follow the Truth as directed by Allah's message in the Holy Qur'an.

And do not abuse/villify those for whom they call upon in their prayers, lest exceeding the limits they should abuse Allah out of ignorance. Thus have We made fair seeming to every people their deeds; then to their Lord shall be their return, so He will inform them of what they did. (Al_Quraan_006.108)

Hannan cannot let ALLAH be the one and only Supreme Judge in matters of whose prayers to the Lord are accepted or not.  He wants to supercede Allah's exclusive jurisdiction, and wants to be the judge himself.  He wants to DICTATE who is a proper Muslim according to his personal opinion.

We find this posturing to be unacceptable, and tantamounting to reprehensible 'shirk'.

The Ahmadis should not have selected Gazipur, a Muslim area for their Salana Jalsa. It was a big provocation. Muslims do not accept the Ahmadis as Muslims. The Muslims consider them a group out to disrupt Muslim unity, damage Muslim organizations and that they  have acted as agents  of enemies of Islam.

Very Respected Mr. Ejazur

As I said I am not bothered with personal remarks. You are more than welcome to repeat as many times or to make some new ones. But, thanks a lot for winding up the debate. Thanks again for your understanding that we keep sports clean of our other problems.

CATCH BANGLADESH, CATCH. Even if we cannot win the tournament, we shall make a name.

It matters when our cricketing experts are interviewed by little girls.

The only reason they want to come back is their families. Too bad the government can't take credit for their families. The failure of our governments on population control, the economy, food prices and law and order are reasons why millions of our people endure hardship abroad.
