[mukto-mona] Humanitarian crisis brewing in northern Sri Lanka

Humanitarian crisis brewing in northern Sri Lanka

Nava Thakuria

An  estimated  250,000  people  are  trapped in a 250 square-kilometre area which  has  come  under  intense  fighting.

SAN-Feature Service: Major humanitarian crisis is brewing from Sri Lanka, where hundred thousands people being trapped in between the infighting of the Sri  Lanka Security Forces and the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) in northern part of the Island nation.

The International Committee of the Red  Cross (ICRC) has come forward advocating for the physical protection, medical care and basic assistance to those victims in Sri Lanka's Vanni  region.

"An  estimated  250,000  people  are  trapped in a 250 square-kilometre area which  has  come  under  intense  fighting.  They have no safe area to take shelter and are unable to flee," stated in an ICRC release today.  It also added that hundreds of people have been killed and scores of wounded  are  overwhelming understaffed and ill-equipped medical facilities in the locality,  following  intensified fighting between  the  two parties for weeks.

Meanwhile, the Indian foreign minister Pranab Mukherjee air dashed in Colombo on January 27 amidst the media reports that the LTTE was using civilians as human shields. Mukherjee, while speaking to the reporters before leaving for the Island nation, stated that New Delhi only wanted to ensure the safety of civilians who had been caught in the crossfire. He however clarified that India had no sympathy towards the LTTE cadres.

"We are for fight against terrorists and all sorts of terrorism. Therefore, we have no sympathy for any terrorist activity indulged in by any organisation, particularly LTTE which is a banned organisation in India," Mukherjee commented.

The Indian minister, while meeting the Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa, urged the government to take initiative for the safety of Tamil civilians trapped in the troubled zone. Meanwhile, quoting the Lankan army chief Sarath Fonseka, the local media reported that the LTTE lost almost 95% of their operational area.

Jacques de Maio, the ICRC head of operations for South Asia in Geneva disclosed that people  are  being  caught in the crossfire, hospitals and ambulances have been  hit by shelling and several aid workers were injured while evacuating the  wounded. The violence is preventing the International Committee of the Red  Cross (ICRC) from operating in the region.

He also revealed that, once the  dust  settles, one might witness countless  victims and a terrible humanitarian  situation,  unless  civilians are protected and international humanitarian law is respected in all circumstances. "It's high time  to take decisive action and stop further bloodshed because time is running out," he added.

The  ICRC  urgently  appeals to both sides to allow and facilitate the safe and voluntary movement of civilians out of the combat zone.  The  ICRC,  which is the only international aid agency to have remained permanently in the Vanni over the past  four  months  with  the  agreement  of  both sides, continues to work alongside the Sri Lanka Red Cross Society helping those in need.

The  ICRC  is  determined to stay as long as possible in the Vanni, but the parties  must  respect  its  presence and its work. Humanitarian assistance must  be allowed to enter the Vanni and aid workers and their premises must be  protected  from  shelling  and  looting,  as  required by international humanitarian law, argued Stephanie Bouaziz.

Speaking to Merinews from New Delhi, Stephanie also informed that 'in  response  to  the  crisis,  the  ICRC  is  stepping  up its support for Puthukkudiyiruppu  Hospital  in  the  Vanni'.

Both  sides  are  strongly  urged  to  spare  the lives of those not, or no longer,  taking  direct  part  in  the  fighting. Hundreds of patients need emergency  treatment  and  evacuation  to  Vavuniya  Hospital  in  the government-controlled area, she concluded.—SAN-Feature Service

[ALOCHONA] AL heading for impending crisis

AL heading for impending crisis

Now that several weeks have passed since the national elections there
are several clear trends in the AL agenda that could ignite serious
opposition and which should be considered in the wider context of
national interest and security (see my article `A Nationalist Agenda
for Bangladesh'. The following list is the most serious and obvious
provocations of the AL thus far –

1. Creation of a regional taskforce with tactical operations
capabilities and extra-territorial functions could threaten the
internal stability of the country and make it a target for insurgents
and terrorists who had until now posed no threat to Bangladesh's
interests. The notion of foreign forces (particularly Indian) on
Bangladesh soil will be viewed with intense aversion by the public and
could give rise to strong and violent opposition. This proposal will
also be viewed with intense suspicion around the region and increase
tensions in South Asia.

2. Massive vote rigging, violence and intimidation during Upazilla
elections demonstrating an undemocratic state of mind and a deliberate
attempt to weaken local government.

3. Transit facilities without any prospect for wider regional
involvement and cooperation (i.e. China, Nepal and Bhutan) or proper
safeguards of our sovereignty and independence.

4. Reversion to the 1972 constitution with removal of Islam and a
return to `Bengali' as our national identity. This last had originally
sparked the CHT insurgency which was only countered after President
Ziaur Rahman amended the constitution and made us Bangladeshis which
is a concept based on territoriality rather than ethnicity clearly
separating us culturally and politically from West Bengal and India.

5. Attempts to repeal the 5th Amendment of the constitution which had
removed the highly unpopular BKSAL governance system established by
Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. The 5th amendment had also legitimized the
proclamations and proclamations orders issued during the martial law
regime of President Ziaur Rahman and which also ratified all actions
of the Martial Law authorities during that period.

6. Failure to fulfill election pledges of Tk. 10 per kilogram rice,
free fertilizer and employment for a member of every family in
Bangladesh. This will become harder to achieve as another global food
crisis is predicted for end of 2009 and which will extend well into 2010.

7. Reopening of events during the 2 year interim government of Dr.
Fakhruddin Ahmed especially possible investigation of the role of DGFI
and the armed forces. There is also likelihood of interference in the
military rendering it politicized, weak and dysfunctional. This
process appears to have already begun under Gen. Moin U. Ahmed and
will probably increase if he is granted a further extension for
`services rendered'.

8. Increase in criminality and particularly extortion of business
enterprises. There has also been intimidation and brow-beating of
business organizations and bodies to follow the government line on
policy matters which indicates a move away from free-markets and
capitalism. While restraining the natural inclination of business to
pursue increased profits in time of national emergency or economic
crisis can be justified this could under the AL government ultimately
take the form of scapegoating the entire business community for the
failures of government. This will probably become inevitable if the
global financial crisis takes a heavy toll in Bangladesh without
proper and effective measures and safety-nets being put in place due
to an incompetent and insensitive administration.

9 Campus violence that will gradually hamper our educational and
future potential to compete on a global scale.

9. Sidelining of opposition in parliament through controversial
seating arrangements and censoring of debates as broadcast on BTV.
Harassment of opposition party workers has already begun on a massive
scale.

10. Return to dynastic politics as members of the Sheikh's family are
exerting immense influence but without the responsibility or
accountability associated with their power which is exercised in a
largely unofficial capacity.

11. War Crimes Trials which is probably a ruse to distract from the
above failures and policies as any case will have to overcome the
amnesty given by Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and the tripartite agreement
between India, Pakistan and Bangladesh on the exchange of prisoners.
This is also an attempt in conjunction with points 4 and 5 to
undermine religion based politics in Bangladesh. This will probably
have the effect of promoting extremism and radicalism by pushing
Islamic parties underground and could pose a threat to democracy and
also the stability of the country.

While many of the above proposals and acts are not official policy of
the AL government the party being largely a monolithic entity and also
ideologically quite rigid it is entirely unlikely any initiative could
proceed without the tacit approval of the leadership hierarchy. While
individually the above proposals and acts may appear innocuous when
taken together they signal a reassertion of the undemocratic and
autocratic nature of the Awami League and an overweening dependence on
India. Some of the proposals and policy initiatives listed above have
the potential to spark a hostile and violent reaction without
combination with other issues and these should be identified and
firmly opposed at the outset.

The question remains as to whether the BNP alliance can capitalize on
AL difficulties and its glaring failures. While the BNP has taken
steps to reorganize itself from the grassroots level the same stale
leaders and advisors remain in their positions. Those who brought the
BNP to its present debacle in the national elections still hold
positions of influence within the party and unless they are removed
with utmost ruthlessness and haste the party is likely to become
another Muslim League with ever decreasing returns in elections. It is
important that if the nationalist agenda is to survive in Bangladesh
the BNP has to remodel and refashion itself and become more
democratized and responsive to the needs of the people and country.
The only other alternative is for a completely new party to emerge but
this seems very unlikely under present conditions and circumstances.
This is not to say that this could not happen especially if the BNP
continues to advocate meaningless policies such as impeachment of the
president or some such similar nonsense. The main problem for the BNP
is that it is a party without an ideology and in its place opportunism
and greed has become qualifications for party membership. It is no
longer enough that it is the party that stands against the AL it must
be the party that stands for something. Unfortunately the party lacks
the intellectual depth or analytical skills to carry out the necessary
internal restructuring. To rectify this deficiency the party has to
push forward an aggressive agenda to weed out the useless and
incompetent from amongst its ranks and to establish a new dynamic
leadership structure that can meet the challenges of the 21st century.

Re: [ALOCHONA] Questions Surrounding JOY as Advisor to His Mother Prime Minister

I am sure it did not go unnoticed by those who are keen on noticing what is going around their birthplace.
Joy came silently (remember his 10 kilometer long flower throwing well wishers lined up during her last visit) stayed for weeks, had discussions with whom ever he had planned for (perhaps helped awarding the wi-max contract) all kept so secret exept only few what could not have been kept outside the public eye.
Media, have you really lost your interest in him or it is something else? can anyone eleborate.
Even the dubious wi-max contract (according to bdnews24's article) was not reported in the main media as it should be the gate way event to the digital Bangladesh.

Does anyone know how much wealth Joy has so far amassed? Does anyone question how he amassed the wealth and developed the businesses he has in the United States? Did any media dig into how much he was paid by the poor Government of Bangladesh directly or secretly during the 1996-2001 regime in his position as the Advisor to the then Prime Minister? Does anyone question whether there is any conflict of interest involved in Joy's being Advisor to his mother Prime Minister???? Would we ever question how much he would be paid during this term in his same position as the Advisor to his mother Prime Minister? Would our conscience ever jerk us to say this is a sham position involving serious conflict of interest and corrupt practices to make him wealthier if not wealthiest from wealthy? - W

[mukto-mona] Imams from India deliver Ijtema sermons

Imams from India deliver Ijtema sermons

Sat, Jan 31st, 2009 1:45 am BdST

Gazipur, Jan 30 (bdnews24.com)— Two leading Imams from India delivered sermons Friday at the spiritual sessions on the first day of the Bishwa Ijtema, the second largest congregation of Muslims in the world after the hajj.

Maulana Ibrahim, the Imam of Delhi Jame Masjid, gave his Aam Boyan (Main Sermon) after the Jumma prayers.

Maulana Ahmed Lat, another leader of Tablig Jamaat from India, delivered his Aam Boyan after the Magrib prayers in the evening.

The Dhaka-Mymensingh Road choked with traffic as devotees began arriving ahead of the midday prayers.

Many just stood on the road to say their Jumma prayers as the Ijtema ground could not accommodate them.

Hafez Maulana Zubayer, the Imam of Dhaka's Kakrail Jame Masjid, led the Jumma congregation of hundreds of thousand.

Health minister AFM Ruhul Haq, minister of state for religious affairs Shahjahan Miah, AKM Mazammel Haq MP and Jahid Ahsen Russell MP were among the devotees.

The prayer over, the traffic management also collapsed on Tong-Kaliganj, and Abdulllahpur-Ashulia roads.

Launched in 1946, the three-day Ijtema, on the bank of the Turag river, will see nearly 2 million visitors this year from home as well as some 90 different countries joining the congress, before it ends with the final prayer Akheri Munajat on Feb. 1.

Devotees who have been preparing and gathering for weeks were met with fog on the morning of the first day, but the sun soon appeared bringing unseasonably warm weather. Last year's Ijtema was cut short after just one day due to inclement weather.

Railway officials said a total of 42 special trains have been launched this for devotees during the Ijtema.

Authorities have imposed restrictions on transport movement on several routes in and around the north of the capital city from Friday.

The roads include Pragati Sarani crossing-Tongi-Gazipur crossing, Abdullahpur-Ashulia-Baipail crossing road, Mirpur road-Beribadh, Mirpur Zoo-Beribadh and Pallabi eastern housing-Beribadh.

Around 10,000 law enforcers—8,000 police, 660 ansar and 800 RAB personnel—have been deployed for safety in and around the Ijtema premises.

Gazipur police super Abdul Baten said devotees have to pass five tiers of security to reach the central stage of the Ijtema.

Detective branch, special branch, crime investigation department and national security intelligence and directorate general of forces intelligence in plain clothes are also keeping a close eye.

The on-duty officer in RAB control room said there are 48 CCTVs set up in the Ijtema ground to ensure security in every nook and corner in the premises.

Two helicopters are also hovering in the sky over the Ijtema ground and its surrounding area, he added.

Despite all measures, there was some disorder on the first day.

As many as 5000 devotees had lost their mobile sets during the Jumma prayers, Nurul Islam, a mobile phone vendor at Tongi's Cherag Ali Market, said.

He said over 200 people came to get replacement SIM cards to his shop alone.

Tongi police said they had detained 49 pickpockets.

One devotee died of cardiac arrest on the Ijtema premises.

The dead was identified as Mohammad Aziz, 70, of Sarishabari Upazila in Jamalpur.

Another woman named Parvin Akhtar, 45, died at Kamar Para, adjacent to the Ijtema premises.

Their Namaz e Janaza took place on the Ijtema ground.

A total of 104 patients were admitted to Tongi General Hospital. Of them, 45 patients were described to be in a critical condition. Most of them were had old-age complications. Some complained of asthma.

FBI Cuts Off CAIR Over Hamas Questions

by Mary Jacoby
IPT News
January 29, 2009

http://www.investigativeproject.org/article/985

The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has cut off contacts with the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) amid mounting concern about the Muslim advocacy group's roots in a Hamas-support network, the Investigative Project on Terrorism has learned.

The decision to end contacts with CAIR was made quietly last summer as federal prosecutors prepared for a second trial of the Holy Land Foundation for Relief and Development (HLF), an Islamic charity accused of providing money and political support to the terrorist group Hamas, according to people with knowledge of the matter.
CAIR and its chairman emeritus, Omar Ahmad, were named un-indicted co-conspirators in the HLF case. Both Ahmad and CAIR's current national executive director, Nihad Awad, were revealed on government wiretaps as having been active participants in early Hamas-related organizational meetings in the United States. During testimony, FBI agent Lara Burns described CAIR as a front organization.

Hamas is a US-designated foreign terrorist organization, and it's been illegal since 1995 to provide support to it within the United States. The decision to end contacts with CAIR is a significant policy change for the FBI. For years, the FBI worked with the national organization and its state chapters to address Muslim community concerns about the potential for hate crimes and other civil liberty violations in the wake of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks.

But critics said the FBI improperly conferred legitimacy on CAIR by meeting with its officials, even as its own investigative files contained evidence of CAIR leaders' ties to Hamas.
Last autumn, FBI field offices began notifying state CAIR chapters that bureau officials could no longer meet with them until CAIR's national leadership in Washington had addressed issues raised by the HLF trial, according to people with knowledge of the notifications.

CAIR spokesman Ibrahim Hooper declined to comment Wednesday when the IPT called for comment. Before hanging up, Hooper said "We're more than happy to cooperate with legitimate media. But we don't cooperate with those who promote anti-Muslim bigotry."

In one letter obtained by IPT News, James E. Finch, Special Agent in Charge of the FBI's Oklahoma City field office, canceled a meeting of the local Muslim Community Outreach Program, a state-federal program designed to enlist Muslims in terrorism prevention and investigate reports of civil liberties violations. "Regrettably, due to circumstances beyond my control, the meeting will be postponed until further notice as a result of the planned participation by the Oklahoma chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations," Finch's Oct. 8, 2008 letter to Muslim groups in the Oklahoma outreach program said.

Finch made clear the Oklahoma office valued its relationship with local Muslims. He said the stumbling block to further outreach was CAIR's national leadership.
"[I]f CAIR wishes to pursue an outreach relationship with the FBI, certain issues must be addressed to the satisfaction of the FBI. Unfortunately, these issues cannot be addressed at the local level and must be addressed by the CAIR National Office in Washington, D.C.," the letter said.

A spokesman for the FBI's Oklahoma City office referred questions about the letter to the FBI's national press office. In Washington, FBI spokesman John Miller said, "We've certainly been in contact with CAIR chapters" about the un-indicted co-conspirator designation. "The letter speaks for itself."

Letters with similar wording were sent in other states, people with knowledge of the matter said. It is not known how many letters were issued, but the FBI has had strong working relationships with CAIR chapters in states including Ohio, Michigan, Arizona and Florida.

Hamas was formed in 1987 as the Palestinian wing of the Muslim Brotherhood, the global Islamic political movement that aims to spread the rule of Shariah, or Islamic law, throughout the world.

A North American branch of the Brotherhood supervised HLF, CAIR and other organizations to build political, financial and public relations support for Hamas, evidence at the HLF trial showed.

The U.S.-based Brotherhood formed a Palestine Committee, headed by Hamas official Mousa Abu Marzook, in 1988 during the first intifada uprising in Palestinian territories against Israel. Hamas's stated policy is for the destruction of Israel.

CAIR co-founders Ahmad and Awad were early active members of the Palestine Committee, evidence showed. Wiretaps recorded the two CAIR leaders participating in strategy meetings of the committee in the 1990s, and both were also on a phone list of its members, the evidence showed.

The first HLF trial in Texas ended in a mistrial in October 2007. In November 2008, the second trial resulted in convictions of five former HLF officials on all counts of providing material support to Hamas.

It is unclear what changed between the first and second HLF trials to make the FBI rescind its policy of outreach to CAIR. The un-indicted co-conspirator designations were made on May 27, 2007 in connection with the first HLF trial. Moreover, much of the evidence linking the CAIR officials to Hamas was aired in an earlier public trial in 2006.
CAIR, however, vigorously challenged the un-indicted co-conspirator designation as a violation of its First and Fifth Amendment rights, accusing the government of "demonization of all things Muslim" in a brief filed in the summer of 2007 with the US District Court for the Northern District of Texas.

The co-conspirator designation is "particularly insidious and ironic as CAIR is an organization dedicated to fostering acceptance of Muslims in American society and protecting the civil liberties of all Muslim Americans," CAIR's brief read.

The government filed a brief on Sept. 4, 2007 opposing CAIR's filing, arguing the group lacked standing to challenge the co-conspirator designation and that the matter was moot, as the evidence was already entered into the public record. The judge never ruled on CAIR's request.

The HLF trial showed that CAIR was formed to covertly influence US opinions of the Palestinian conflict and Islam, but without revealing its connections to Hamas.

For example, prosecutors introduced transcripts of wiretaps from a 1993 meeting in Philadelphia of the Palestine Committee, called to order by Ahmad (see page 10 of the hyperlink) and attended by Awad. In that meeting, Ahmad and others discussed the need to create a new political organization seemingly unconnected to Hamas or the Brotherhood.

In one excerpt, (see page 4 of the link) an unidentified male said: "We must form a new organization for activism which will be neutral, because we are placed in a corner, we are place in a corner. It is known who we are, we are marked and I believe there should be a new neutral organization which works on both sides."
CAIR was founded a year later, in 1994, by Ahmad and Awad. In March 1994, Awad was taped at Miami's Barry University publicly declaring his support for Hamas: "I am in support of the Hamas movement more than the PLO," Awad said.

A July 30, 1994 agenda for the Palestine Committee, seized by federal agents and introduced at trial, showed that "suggestions to develop the work" of HLF, CAIR and other organizations was on the agenda.
Under the heading "The need for trained resources in the media and political fields," the agenda said: "No doubt America is the ideal location to train the necessary resources to support the Movement worldwide."
By 1995, CAIR was conducting public relations work to counter the US detention of Mousa Abu Marzook, the Hamas official and Palestine Committee member who was also head of the Muslim Brotherhood in the US.
A transcript of an August 1995 phone call intercepted by government investigators showed HLF officials Shukri Abu Baker and Ghassan Elashi talking about CAIR's efforts (see page 12 of the link).

Days before the 2001 terrorist attacks, the FBI raided the offices of Infocom, a Texas internet company connected to HLF. CAIR's Nihad Awad appeared at a press conference outside Infocom headquarters to denounce what he called an "anti-Muslim witch hunt."

CAIR remained a vocal player in the public debate after 9/11. It developed relationships with members of Congress. FBI officials frequently attended CAIR fundraising banquets, and CAIR cited such contacts in its own literature and Web site as evidence of its good standing with the government.

Mary Jacoby is an award winning reporter who has worked for the Wall Street Journal, Salon.com, the St. Petersburg Times, Chicago Tribune and Roll Call. She may be reached at writetomaryjacoby@gmail.com
For more on CAIR's roots and its history of attacking law enforcement investigations and supporting Islamic terrorists, see the IPT's dossier on the group. Check back at the IPT website tomorrow for a report on CAIR's consistent refusal to condemn terrorist organizations and its rationalization of suicide bombings.

[ALOCHONA] Perect storm is coming to Bangladesh

Dear All,

You may wonder what kind of storm I am talking about.  It's  economical storm that Bangladesh never experienced before.  I am little bit worried that economists and present Minsters in Bangladesh are not paying much attention about this storm.  Well the problem is that if you do not know a Storm is coming, then you won't be prepared for it.  There will be a situation that we will start blame game, he or she didn't tell me, I didn't know, nobody even PM didn't say this.  Well then listen from me please.

My conservative estimate is that economical storm in the world will exist until 2012,  if you can ride on this storm, then you will survive, if you can't then good luck.  I like to provide few strategic outlines what to do in this perfect economical storm in Bangladesh.

1) Current Govt should recognize that a perfect storm is coming.  If USA could recognize this storm in 2006,  USA won't be in this position now.

2) Put resources in place so Govt can take care its people and feed them trough out the storm period.

3) Stop biased or favoritism in Bangladesh.  Once I am hungry,  I won't say I am AL or BNP,  all I will say give me food and job to survive.  So based on basis of human rights,  its current Govt duty to help people regardless his or her party affiliations.

4) Bangladesh Real Estate bubble will be burst within year and so, so Govt should be prepared with huge layoff in that sector as well as other sectors.  Most of the Real Estate bubble in Bangladesh were created by NRB and corrupted money in Bangladesh.  NRB is real squeeze in financial aspect and won't be able to continue support the sky rocket price of land and apartments in Bangladesh.

5) Pharmaceuticals is the only sector which is recession proved in Bangladesh.  I have asked BNP Govt in 2005 to modernize this sector, CTG in 2007 and I am asking AL Govt in 2009 to pay attention and use NRBs expertise to develop this sector.  This is the only sector that you have no choice but to bring experts NRBs in Bangladesh to develop this sector for future growth.

6) NRBs and people in Bangladesh should lower their life style to ride on this storm.  Excessive waste will bring up other people's misery.

God Bless Bangladesh and help her 150 Million poor people in this coming perfect Storm.

Note:  My advise is not to direct any individuals or parties or NRBs, but to reach out to them and what we can do for the people during this bad economical  times.

Subject: [khabor.com] Why USA won't able to get out of this financial mess

Dear All,

I think and believe that we in USA are concern like any others about financial impact in USA and rest of the world and where this will lead us in the next 8 years.  I congratulate President Obama for taking the USA leadership but I am cautious like others even though I have campaign for Obama among Bangladeshi Community in USA.

Let's see the scenario why USA is in this position which is very different than 1930's and what steps should be taken for the incremental improvement.

Reasons for this mess

1) More than $20T, start with Trillion dollars of investors money has been lost in the last 12 months including personal 401K money. So the people confidence in companies is lower than ever.

2) More than 500,000 jobs have been cut per month by companies in USA, if it's continue then at the end of 2009 total 6 million jobs will be lost.  Adding 2 million jobs already have been lost in the last 24 months.  This is creating a nightmare for the consumers to spend  discretionary money.

3) Two third of the economy are depended on consumer spending,  when consumer stopped buying like before,  companies can not make money, their stocks goes down and companies start laying off to make baseline profit for the company.  This is called a cycle of uncertainty.

4) Biggest problem is that USA consumers has borrowed two times of their house worth for the last 5 years.  For example, if a house price is $100K in 1999, it went up to $300K in 2006, so extra $200K was borrowed from foreign countries to mortgage people's houses in USA.  Therefore, deficit went over the roof.  If this is continued,  few wealthy countries might not be interested to invest in USA like before because losing confidence into USA economy and their investment returns.

5) Once people lost jobs, they can not afford to pay high mortgage which they could not afford at the first place.  US Govt can not pay everybody extra interest for the mortgage they owe to banks.  This might come over $10T, start with Trillion.

6) Once companies make less money, the Govt tax collection also becomes low.  So more deficit for USA.  Intake is higher than delivery.

7) USA does not have leadership of many technologies like before, so USA has more competitors than before i.e. China and India.

8) More liability for baby boomers in years ahead, means need more money to take care her citizens like Social Security and Medicare.

9) Iraq war alone costs USA close to $1T and need another $1.2T to take care veterans health and financial liabilities.

10) Dollar might go down compare to others currency once foreign countries start withdraw their investment or stopped new investment in USA, i.e.  stop buying USA Bond.

Options to way of of this mess:

So what do USA have now?  President Obama's sweet talks might not bring much fruits unless he can show leadership and put new policies in place very quickly, so situation does not get out of control.  I personally think that President Obama should do the following for the love of this country.

1)  President Obama should provide executive order to cut military budget of $465B to only $50B.  Bring all military installation back home unless foreign countries provide the bill.

2) Provide middle class incentives as soon as possible.

3) Stop giving big money to banks but give direct loan to consumers from Govt Treasure.  I know it does not sound Capitalist,  but US Govt does not have any other option.  For example,  If I know that this consumer will not able to pay back my money,  I won't make loan to him even I get pressured from Govt unless Govt takes all the toxic assets.  Same situation, Banks are not lending even they got US Govt money.  Banks know consumers do not have enough money or may lose job soon whichever is first.

4) Provide stimulate money if there is any Corrective and Preventive Action (CAPA) in place for the new projects which will create jobs.

I hope and pray US gets out of this mess but I am very pessimistic now based on the scenario I have presented you here, unless miracle happens in USA.

God bless USA and her people.

M. M. Chowdhury (Mithu), Virginia, USA

[mukto-mona] Eradicating Terrorism ISP Jan 09 III

Eradicating Terrorism: Groping in the Dark

Ram Puniyani

November 26 terror attack on Mumbai shook the whole nation like never before. The society and state have been putting in their best to see that measures are taken where by the terror acts don't repeat. So traumatized has been the nation that every conceivable measure is being given a serious thought for the safety and security of society.

To begin with the condolence for the dead was expressed through number of events, candle light march, human chains, all religion prayer meetings and area networking has come up in a very visible fashion. In many of these protests the anger against politicians had a free for all expression, at places sometimes overtly and sometimes covertly the fear of Pakistan and 'Jehadi' terrorists has been the running thread of the protests. The misplaced call for war against Pakistan is the part of this phenomenon only. The state, the central Government in order to show that something is being done, passed a law, empowering the state as if that will deter the terrorists, who generally come with the full readiness to die. The state is blowing hot and cold, sometimes threatening war and at others talking tough and less often also saying that war is no option.

State is also reviewing the quality of bullet proof jackets, increasing airport security and the security of coast line. Civic society groups have been undertaking workshops for disaster management, a university went on to declare a two year course against terrorism. The best amongst these have been the mohalla committee initiative to cement peace between different communities.

One recalls that after most of the severe phenomenon of violence the civic society has responded with great concern earlier also. Be it the post Babri demolition Mumbai riots or the Gujarat carnage 2003, for a good bit of time socially oriented and concerned individuals and groups sprang into the relief, rehabilitation and intercommunity amity work. This time there is a lot of ferment and a part of it does hold Pakistan as the culprit of the attacks of terror. The measures taken by state though some of them welcome, the measures of civic society groups, related to intercommunity amity are very valuable. But how far will they go?

It seems that the knee jerk reaction after the phenomenon is more focused on the symptoms of the phenomenon. Tighten security, have better bullet jackets and have stringent laws. There is not much attempt to go beyond the obvious to unravel the truth of sectarian and terrorist violence. Surely sectarian violence is due to some political groups baking their bread in the divisive politics, the ground for which is prepared by the hate ideology, spread of misconceptions and distorted view of the minorities, their history, their present. So, as lot of groups and individuals correctly talk about peace, about need for amity, their attempts do not reach to the core issue of fighting against divisive politics, the attempt to unravel the truth about minorities, their present, their' past.

The communal violence and emotive issues give more strength to the communal parties, who in turn give bigger space to their affiliates who work at cultural and religious level to increase the communal divides and weaken national integration, further paving way to still worse violence in times to come. Not only that, their intensity has been worsening every next time they are staged. Gujarat was worse than Mumbai and Orissa has been more horrific than Dangs. The trajectory of communal violence has clearly shown that all the efforts by state to curb it have been misdirected; the social initiatives have been serious but probably not hitting the target in the effective way. One means the communal congruence of right wing ideology during last three decades.

As far as terrorist attacks are concerned, the formulation that All Terrorists are Muslims has been the understanding on which policies are made and implemented. With the result that the real causes of terror are not taken up for treatment of the disease of terrorism. From 1993 onwards terror attacks have been occurring, stringent laws or other wise. The deeper injustice has been giving raison de tre' to the repetition of these attacks. Here also the attacks have been worsening, the Mumbai one being worst so far.

If we see a bit more seriously, the real causes of terrorism have not taken up for fighting against. The popular perceptions stops at Al Qaeda, Lashkar-e-Tayyaba being the real cause obviates the need to see beyond Al Qaeda etc. It prevents us from seeing the role of US imperialism in bring them up and using these groups for US' political-economic gains. So all anger, protest against Pakistan and accompanying factors gets major importance. One misses the point that terrorism of AL Qaeda variety has roots in US policies of control over oil resources. It is due to those policies that these groups were propped up to fight Russian armies occupying Afghanistan. One has to see beyond the obvious to realize that this type terrorism has its genesis from the deeper political designs. The indoctrination of the radical groups which began due to this policy of US can not be fought against merely by strengthening some more laws and by new set of weapons.

Pakistani society is as much a victim of this dastardly phenomenon as India is. Terrorists always are looking for the holes in security through which they operate and their biggest advantage is that they are indoctrinated to the extent that they are willing to stake their all, including their lives to do what they have been doing. On similar wave length operates the terror attacks by Sadhvi Pragya Singh Thakur and other of her group. These Hindutva warriors have also been indoctrinated into hating others for the sake of their avowed goal of Hindu Rashtra. So where do we go, what direction we give to our concerns to ensure that terror attacks do not occur.

First and foremost, all places where injustice prevails, where democracy is stifled in a shortsighted way, those places become a rich fertile ground for breeding of terrorism. The one planted by US, Al Qaeda type, needs to be fought at global level. US is to be made accountable for much of this cancer which has spread in the area. While firmly dealing with the present terror set ups, democracy also needs to be made strong in Pakistan itself. One sees the subtle difference in the utterances of democratic elements in Pakistan and the Army-ISI-Mullah combine. The global peace movement has to ensure that the United Nations comes to the fore and stops the hegemony, the imperial behavior of US in particular. No measure short of restoring UN, making US follow the wishes of global community, a more democratized United Nations will suffice. This rejuvenated UN has to take up the global issue of terrorism, and put a brake on one sided, arbitrary US policies. US
war on terror, and those who go by that, need to be put on the margins and entire charge of global interventions taken up by UN.

While draconian laws are no solution to the problem, it is likely they create and intensify the problem. The mantra of 'tighten the security' has not yielded any success in preventing it. The core point is to see that the concerned civic society makes its stand clear, that terrorism's roots lie in injustice on one hand and US policies on the other. We need to raise our voices against injustice and US hegemony both to see that over a period of time the terror menace is eliminated by and by.

[mukto-mona] An American's New Year Eve in Burma

http://www.burmadigest.info/emailheader.jpg
=========================================

An American's New Year Eve in Burma

Part 1. NIGHT BUS TO RANGOON

On one of my recent trips to Burma I spent some time in Moulmein. I had arrived there by train from Rangoon . The condition of the train and rails was so decrepit that I found myself constantly bounced up and slammed back down onto my seat with tooth cracking force. But more disturbing were the sightings of children on work crews smashing rocks into gravel and hand carrying huge loads of rock along the rail line. This labor pool of dusty, exhausted zombies was made up of children who appeared to range in age from 5 to 14 years..............

Some time in the middle of the night I felt someone kicking my foot and demanding, "Papers. Papers". I rose out of my haze and there before me stood a uniformed soldier with an outstretched hand demanding my passport. I rummaged around in my pockets, withdrew the document and passed it to him........................

The next thing I was aware of was the bus had stopped, people were lining the aisles and getting off. It was bright as day outside. Huge spotlights were driven by large, noisy generators. The passengers from a bus ahead of us were all lined up in front of tables with their open baggage being inspected by soldiers.

My heart picked up its rhythm as I considered the possibility of having my luggage searched, my camera opened and the Bo Mya pictures discovered. I thought about retrieving my camera, ejecting the memory card and stashing it somewhere on the bus. .........................

Part 2. NEW YEARS EVE IN RANGOON

The next time I was awakened it was by the driver directing me to get off the bus. We were on a wide paved street in a residential area of Rangoon and all the other passengers were disappearing into the night as others were met by family and friends. I was approached immediately by an alcohol loaded voice yelling "taxi ?".

"My country good", my host belched at me, "I Army."  Then the totally unexpected admission…"I Army. Army bad. Very bad." Then to my astonishment he then began to cry. "I Army. Army very bad," he choked. From his anguished behavior I realized I was sharing the cab with an extremely tormented and conflicted army officer............

Again I was surprised when the driver would not accept payment for the ride. He grinned at me and wished me a "Happy New Year". As I grabbed my bag and exited the taxi I shook the Officer's hand as he continued his tearful wail, "I Army. Army bad, very bad."

As I climbed the dark stairs to the guest house reception I thought this might signal a very happy new year. Maybe the situation in Burma had some hope after all. I wondered how many Army officers shared this man's anguish............
