Re: [mukto-mona] Dear Farida Majid . . .

Re: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/mukto-mona/message/49566

>to you i just want to say the >following: have an open mind.. don't

Ms. Majid is what is known as Islamic feminist. Begum Rokeya was
an early Islamic feminist. The doctrine of islamic feminism says
that Islam has been hijacked by men, so time has come to reclaim
Islam from the clutches of men and that women should have the rights
to issue Islamic edicts on women. And as long as the edicts are
issued/endorsed by women they are legit and can't be bad, even if that
is as despicable as wearing burqua. These Islamic feminists have found
a hypocritical middle ground to not to anger the Islamists by stating
their belief in Islam and prophet Muhammad but at the same time
rejecting all islamic injunctions traditions that are issued by males
as being phoney. To do so they use convoluted interpretation of verses
of Quran.

Secondly these Islamic feminists have found in Islamic customs like
Burqa/Hijab a means of stating their feminine identity as distinct
from men. Just as male chauvinists look for pure manly traits and
symbols to state/accentuate their manhood so does the female chauvinists,
of which islamic feminists are a subset. I said hypocritical because
the core doctrine of Quran and Sunnah (Prophet's life and deeds) are
glaring example of men's angle on life. To believe in Quran and Muhammad
and believe in "Islamic feminism" simultaneously is a contradiction in
terms.

Bangabandhu leaded us to freedom, to self-respect, dignity and the incomparable joy of getting an independent country for ourselves and generation to come and welfare of its people. That is why Bangabandhu is respected, honoured and loved. It is for that reason alone the day of his brutal assassination is observed as our "National Mourning Day". This year Bangalee nation and the citizens of Bangladesh (inside and outside of Bangladesh) observed the 33rd death anniversary of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman with some relief and great enthusiasm & determination as in compliance with a recent High Court ruling, the present interim caretaker government had reinstated August 15 as "National Mourning Day", a public holiday & the national flag was at half-mast to commemorate the assassination of father of the nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and to paid dedicated homage, tribute and respect to Bangabandhu.

Speakers condemned previous Jamat - BNP JOT government for detracting the great leader Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman by stripping him of the title 'Father of the Nation' through enacting law and by pulling down his portrait from the deserved position and also by twisting the truth in books of our children about Bangabandhu's political struggle towards the creation of Bangladesh

Speakers also conveyed thanks to the present care taker government, President, Chief Adviser, the army Chief, the Navy Chief and the Air chief for paying their proper respect to Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and for offering prayers and placing flowers at his grave at Tungipara, ancestral home of Bangabandhu on 15th August, 2007.

Re: [mukto-mona] Dear Farida Majid . . .

WRT: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/mukto-mona/message/49551

Dear Farida Majid,
how are you?

you didn't really say anything in your email...nothing new, nothing convincing. what is "aboshyok porda"? don't you find it funny?
this is just an illusion. to have perfect equality in a society, this idea cannot help. there is no "aboshyok porda".
it only helps men.

Rokey's article Burka is a total garbage; and let me tell you why.
she said the following: "Burka Poriya Cholaferai Kono Oshubidha Hoy Na. Tobe Shay Jonno Shamanno Rokomer Ektu Ovvash Chai; Bina Ovvashe Kon Kajta Hoy?"

what a statement! Only a total stupid could say things like this.

she also said the following: " Eyi Oborodh Protha Na Thakile Manush O Poshute Proved Ki Thake?"

Wow!!! my mother doesn't like Burka, and she never bothered to practice this either. it is clear that Rokeya would call her her a "Poshu".
i think Rokeya was on some kind of drug.

i found the following in the Koran:
"Prophet, enjoin your wives, your daughters, and the wives of true believers to draw their veils close round them. That is more proper, so that they may be recognized and not be molested. God is ever forgiving and merciful." (N. J. Dawood, The Koran, Sura 33, Verse 59, Penguin Books, 1999).

this my friend is talking about a kind of Taliban Style Burka, where only eyes are barely visible; but please note that this verse is ordering to cover women completely, not even eyes are open here. Even Taliban standard is better than this Koranic verse.

to you i just want to say the following: have an open mind.. don't try to make anything good, when it is really bad, by force.

thank you
Salman S.

[mukto-mona] Re: Dr Abhijit Roy's piece

WRT: http://www.mukto-mona.com/Articles/avijit/propaganda_machine.htm

Dr. Avijit,

Excellent article.

I think new trend in the US and elsewhere is even more scary. Now,
these people are trying to change what science should say in a very
organized manner. They already have had some success in trying to
include Intelligent Design in the schools. I have co-workers who are
college educated, yet believe the bible story that the earth is only
five thousand years old. They even have a Creationism museum that
shows that Dinosaurs and humans living at the same time! This morning,
I heard on the radio that Dallas public high schools are now allowed
to have bible classes!!

[mukto-mona] Very bad news for secular Bangladesh: where CTG is leading the nation by the noose

I have read the stuff that this guy wrote and the magazine of the Hijb-ut-Tahrir he used to edit before he went to jail.
He is a very very dangerous ideologue and as bad a Wahabist as bin Laden. His passionate mission is to destroy Islam in Bangladesh as we have known it for the last 1000 years.

[mukto-mona] Re: Dr Abhijit Roy's piece

Thanks Mr. Ray for reminding me that interesting episode of Meghnad Saha. Yes, I should have touched the acerbic rebuttal of saha about roots of whatever was discovered or invented in science or technology in the Vedas which he mentioned in his piece "Shobi Byad-e ase".

I have updated my piece here:

thanks for the suggestion.

It would have been nice had Dr Abhijit Roy in his otherwise excellent article had touched upon Dr Meghnad Saha's acerbic refutal of false claims about roots of whatever was discovered or invented in science or technology in the Vedas in his excellent piece - sab- byade ase- in response to such statements by Anil Baran Roy. Interestingly, Saha never personally attacked.

[ALOCHONA] Tarek Zia’s Inhuman Treatment in Jail and Reverting Back to the Politics of Arson and Klling – Both Are Unexpected

Tarek Rahman's critical health condition in jail is indeed a humanitarian issue and he should be allowed proper treatment as per his and his family's choice. However, the government is callously neglecting this issue and instigating a chaotic political situation which is not in the spirit of 1/11. Reverting back to the politics of arson and killing is neither in the spirit of 1/11 no matter what. It is so painful to see once again cars burnt and human life killed on the street for political agitation and anarchy. Regards. Wohid

RE: [ALOCHONA] How Bangladesh should react to increasing influence of Islam

Dear Farida Majid:

This type of stereotyped blind so called progressive mindless intellectuals are camouflaged nincompoops. Their time is up. These pro-Indian minds are singing the song of Shammobad at the cost of our liberty. When will these broken guitars will understand that we can be Islamic at the same time - can be against Jamaat's stand against liberation of Bangladesh. We have given time to so called socialists, democrats - now it is time for Islam. Their lack of understanding Islam and fashion of rubbing shoulders with dumb intellectuals who barnd all kinds of religious activities as fuitile - is a dead horse idea. I became more attracted to Islam when I went to the West. Why?? I wonder if  Anisur Rahman would ever realise that. Time is coming when Allah will divide the so called Muslims from intellectually organised Islam. People will come out of blind faiths by asking legitimate questions about Islam as Islam is not afraid to answer any question thrown at at. Watch how Allah establises his faith in all of us.

How Bangladesh should react to such wicked exercise in indecent exposure of lies?

We should remind ourselves of the Qur'anic caution:

Wa la talbisoo al-Haqqa bi alBaTili wa taktumu al-Haqqa wa antum t'alamoona.

Dear Alochoks,

Like elsewhere in the world, the influence of religion is increasing in Bangladesh.  You will hardly find any mosque in Dhaka in Friday which can provide space for all those who come to pray.  The spread of Hijab is also noticeable.  Religion based political parties are expanding their support base.  It has posed a risk for the country because countries like India are trying to create a fundamentalist image of Bangladesh and using the rising Islam as a tool for that.  What should we do in this situation?  I tried to analyse it in my article published at:

Please share your views on this critical issue.

Regards.

[ALOCHONA] Wild CTG made JCD activists go wild

When wild CTG deprive Tareq  from fundamental rights of treatment  in spite of  CTG formed three Medical boards' suggestion and High court order and they only give in  to vandelism as in case of  BCL Secretary  Ruton,

One killed as JCD activists go wild on Tarique's injury news

One person was killed and two others were injured when the gas cylinder of a microbus that pro-BNP Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD) activists set on fire exploded in front of Dhaka College today.
The JCD activists went on the rampage at Dhaka University, Dhaka College and Buet on the news that Tarique Rahman, the BNP's senior joint secretary general, injured himself slipping on bathroom floor at Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU).
Three passers-by were injured in the microbus's gas-cylinder explosion in front of Dhaka College. They were rushed to Dhaka Medical College Hospital where doctors declared one of them, identified as Jahangir Alam, dead.
On the Dhaka University campus, JCD activities, who were through a meeting near Aparajeya Bangla demanding the release of BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia and her son Tarique Rahman at noon, rushed to the BSMMU at about 12:25pm following the news.
They went berserk and threw brickbats towards the police as the law enforcers halted the rowdy activists near the hospital.
After a chase and counter-chase between the students and the police, the retreating JCD activists damaged five vehicles and set fire to a black taxicab in front of the Fine Arts Institute and Rokeya Hall.
The pro-BNP students at Buet also staged protests.

[mukto-mona] Fw: INDIA: Censorship and violence against press in Kashmir (Eng+Fr)

Press release

25 August 2008

INDIA
Censorship and violence against press in Kashmir

Reporters Without Borders calls on the Indian authorities to put an immediate stop to the censorship and violence against the media in Kashmir that has been prompted by a wave of protests against Indian rule. At least 13 journalists were beaten by police yesterday in Srinagar, local TV stations are being censored and a curfew is making it hard for newspapers to bring out their issues.

"This latest crisis in Indian Kashmir must not be used as a pretext for subjecting the press to more violence and obstruction," Reporters Without Borders said. "Journalists must have all the guarantees they need, including permanent passes, to be able to work freely despite the curfew. We also call on the police authorities to investigate the violence by certain elements that have led to injuries in the ranks of the press. If no sanctions are adopted, the door will be left open for more abuses. Finally, we call for an end to the censorship of local TV stations, which is a clear violation of the right of Kashmiris to be informed."

At least 13 journalists were beaten by members of the Central Reserve Police Force in Srinagar as they tried to get to their offices yesterday despite the curfew introduced earlier in the day. The journalists had passes issued on 11 August but the police members said they were no long valid.

The injured journalists included Bilal Bhat, the Sahara Samay TV station's bureau chief in Srinagar, who had several ribs broken, and his cameraman, Muzaffar. Ajaz Ahmad of News X, Jehangir Aziz of ETV's Urdu service and Amin War of The Tribune newspaper were also injured.

The curfew prevented the publication of regional newspapers today, including the daily Greater Kashmir, which posted this message on its website: "Due to unavoidable circumstances, the print edition of Greater Kashmir will not be on the stands on 25 August. We regret the inconvenience to our readers. This was the first time in the past decade that GK staffers could not reach the office due to restrictions."

An Indian newspaper's correspondent in Srinagar told Reporters Without Borders: "I had to go through 20 checkpoints to get to my office and each time I was subjected to the same humiliation and the same questions about my work as a journalist."

The authorities yesterday asked local TV stations not to broadcast reports liable to "excite" the population until further order. TV executives and editors were summoned and told it would be preferable if they suspended news programmes and just broadcast entertainment. The government claimed that reports broadcast by certain stations violated the Cable Television Network (Regulation) Act 1995.

It was on the basis of this law that a Srinagar judge yesterday finally ordered the TV stations to suppress their news programmes and just carry entertainment.

Groups of journalists responded by staging street demonstrations against the violence and censorship. "Let the press work" said the placard brandished by one Srinagar reporter.

Indian troops patrolling the streets of Srinagar and other cities in the region today used megaphones to call on the population to stay at home. Demonstrations planned by Kashmiri political parties have been banned. Several demonstrators were shot dead for violating the curfew.

INDE
