[ALOCHONA] Vitamin E is effective treatment for silent liver disease

Vitamin E is effective treatment for silent liver disease

NaturalNews) Nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) is a common, "silent" liver disease. Although it occurs in people who drink little or no alcohol, it causes damage that resembles alcoholic liver disease, including inflammation. According to the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK), the condition is marked by fat in the liver and is associated with the growing number of overweight Americans. In all, about 2 to 5 percent of people in the US have NASH. And while many feel fine and aren't aware they have a liver problem, they actually have a disease that can eventually cause cirrhosis, liver cancer, and death.

There's been no effective treatment for NASH -- until now. Results from a new multi-center study organized by the Nonalcoholic Steatohepatitis Clinical Research Network of NIDDK show vitamin E is a successful treatment for the disease. The findings of this largest ever placebo-controlled randomized trial of NASH therapies were just published in the April 28 online edition of the New England Journal of Medicine.

"There is an increasing prevalence of nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) in this country, something that is directly related to the obesity epidemic," Dr. Joel Lavine, faculty member in the Department of Pediatrics at Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons and chief of gastroenterology, hepatology and nutrition at New York-Presbyterian/Morgan Stanley Children's Hospital, said in a statement to the press. "The good news is that this study showed that cheap and readily available vitamin E can help many of those with the condition."

Dr. Lavine, who was a leader of the research team, pointed out that the drug pioglitazone was also studied alongside daily doses of 800 IU of vitamin E. Although the medication showed some benefits, they were minimal compared to the dramatic effectiveness of vitamin E.

For the Pioglitazone or Vitamin E for NASH Study (PIVENS), the researchers randomly assigned 247 non-diabetic adults with biopsy-confirmed NASH to three groups receiving either vitamin E, pioglitazone (a drug that improves the sensitivity of cells to insulin) or a placebo. After 96 weeks of treatment, liver enzyme tests, which are commonly used to measure liver injury, improved in those who received either pioglitazone or vitamin E.

Unlike vitamin E, however, pioglitazone treatment had an unwelcome side effect -- it caused an average weight gain of 10 pounds over the duration of this study. What's more, although pioglitazone improved many features of NASH, it fell short of statistical significance. However, except for the amount of scar tissue in the liver, vitamin E improved all features of NASH and clearly emerged as effective, natural therapy for this potentially fatal liver disease.

Musa has brought prestige and hope to all of us. He has improved the image of Bangladesh, a land
so often referred as a corrupt country with poor, hungry people.

Can we help Musa , financially and otherwise, so that Musa can continue to
enjoy his hobby....after all he is damn good in it!!

We can also assist him to take " small-but-practical initiatives".

Initiatives and actions to encourage, supervise and train other Bangladeshis to reach the peaks of Himalayas.

Anyone close to Musa reading my appeal?

Please tell us about the best method/ avenue to reach Musa and ask him about his needs/dreams.

How to contact Musa's wife, Soraban Tahura Rimi, an assistant judge in Mymensingh?

Best wishes.

Respected guests,

I am humbly requesting you to arrive by 5:30 pm on this Saturday (May 29, 2010) to enjoy our very attractive "three-in-one" program.  This will be the very first time in Washington DC area that, we are presenting Rabindra Joyonti, Nazrul Joyonti, & Celebrate Bangla New Year in the same evening.  In preparation of producing three (3) very attractive segments, the length of our total program became significantly long.  Due to this reason, we need to start our program on-time, otherwise we may not be able to complete our program by 10:30 pm.

For a long time, we Bangalees have created a little problem for us.  We have a tendency that we do not want to go to a Bangalee program, until it is dark or after sunset.  Please do not follow this pattern at least for this Saturday (May 29).  Sunset happens after 8:30 pm.  If you come after sunset, I guarantee that you will miss at least two-third of the program.

We will be ready to start the program on-time.  But, we need your cooperation to help us to start the program timely.  Please arrive on-time, so that we can start the program on-time.  Why don't we try this time to come at the auditorium and start the program timely?  We really need your help to set a good example of our timing concern to the Bangalee community.  So, once again, please show your wonderful & respected appearance to us by arriving at 5:30 pm.

[ALOCHONA] The Guardian - Chinese engineers propose world's biggest hydro-electric project in Yarlung Tsangpo/Brahmaputra river

Chinese engineers propose world's biggest hydro-electric project in Tibet

Mega-dam on Yarlung Tsangpo river would save 200m tonnes of CO2 but could spark conflict over downstream water supply

Jonathan Watts, Asia environment correspondent

The Guardian

Chinese hydropower lobbyists are calling for construction of the world's biggest hydro-electric project on the upper reaches of the Brahmaputra river as part of a huge expansion of renewable power in the Himalayas.

Zhang Boting, the deputy general secretary of the China Society for Hydropower Engineering, told the Guardian that a massive dam on the great bend of the Yarlung Tsangpo - the Tibetan name for the river - would benefit the world, despite the likely concerns of downstream nations, India and Bangladesh, which access water and power from the river.

Zhang said research had been carried out on the project, but no plan has been drawn up. But documents on the website of a government agency suggest a 38 gigawatt hydropower plant is under consideration that would be more than half as big again as the Three Gorges dam, with a capacity nearly half as large as the UK's national grid.

"This dam could save 200m tonnes of carbon each year. We should not waste the opportunity of the biggest carbon emission reduction project. For the sake of the entire world, all the water resources than can be developed should be developed." That CO2 saving would be over a third of the UK's entire emissions.

The mega-facility is among more than 28 dams on the river that are either planned, completed or under discussion by China, according to Tashi Tsering, a Tibetan scholar of environmental policy at the University of British Columbia.

Tsering publishes a map today of all of the projects that have been reported by Chinese newspapers and hydro-engineering websites.

From this, he concludes that the Tsangpo-Brahmaputra – until recently considered the last great undammed river in Tibet – will be the next focus of government efforts to increase the nation's power supply. One of them is a map of planned dams showing a 38-gigawatt hydro-plant at Motuo on the website of Hydro China, an influential government enterprise responsible for dam construction. A separate State Grid map of future transmission lines indicates the remote area will soon be connected to the rest of China's power supply. Hydro China and State Grid declined requests for clarification.

The government has not confirmed the existence of the scheme, but Tsering cites several newspaper reports of survey teams exploring the area and provides links to other online documents that indicate preparations for large-scale hydro-development of the area.

Given the huge expense, technical difficulties and political sensitivities of the scheme, it is far from certain of final approval by the government. But several Chinese hydroengineers see it as the ultimate goal in an accelerating race with India to develop water resources in one of the planet's last remote regions.

Tapping the power of the river as it bends and plunges from the Himalayan roof of the world down towards the Indian and Bangladeshi flood plains has long been a dream of the world's hydro-engineers.

Along with the Congo river at the Inga falls, this is considered one of the two greatest concentrations of river energy on earth, but it was long thought impossible to access because of the rugged, high-altitude terrain and the risk of water-related conflict with neighbouring countries.

But China has overcome many engineering obstacles with the construction of the railway to Tibet, and its growing energy demands are spurring exploration of ever more remote areas.

"Tibet's resources will be converted into economic advantage," Yan Zhiyong, the general manager of China Hydropower Engineering Consulting Group, told China Energy News earlier this year. "The major technical constraints on damming the Yarlung Tsampo have been overcome." He declined the Guardian's request for an interview, saying the subject was too sensitive.

The exploitation of the Brahmaputra is already under way. China recently announced plans to build five dams further upstream, including a 500MW hydroplant at Zangmu, which is under construction by the power utility Huaneng.

According to Tsering, the biggest of them will be a huge plant at the great bend – either at Metog, known as Motuo in Chinese, or at Daduqia. The former would involve the construction of a series of tunnels, pipes, reservoirs and turbines to exploit the spectacular 2,000-metre fall of the river as it curls down towards India.

Although there has been no official confirmation of plans for a dam, the discussion is far from secret. On a prominent Chinese science forum, Zhang said a dam on the great bend was the ultimate hope for water resource exploitation because it could generate energy equivalent to 100m tonnes of crude coal, or all the oil and gas in the South China sea.

He warned that a delay would allow India to tap these resources and prompt "major conflict" in a region where the two nations have sporadically clashed over disputed territory.

"We should build a hydropower plant in Motuo ... as soon as possible because it is a great policy to protect our territory from Indian invasion and to increase China's capacity for carbon reduction," he wrote last year

Any step forward is likely to be controversial. Tibetans consider Metog a sacred region, and environmental activists warn against building such a huge project in a seismically active and ecologically fragile area.

"A large dam on the Tibetan plateau would amount to a major, irreversible experiment with geo-engineering," said Peter Bosshard of International Rivers. "Blocking the Yarlung Tsangpo could devastate the fragile ecosystem of the Tibetan plateau, and would withhold the river's sediments from the fertile floodplains of Assam in north-east India, and Bangladesh."

China's construction of dams also raises the prospect of a race with India to develop hydropower along south Asia's most important river.

"India needs to be more aggressive in pushing ahead hydro projects (on the Brahmaputra)," Jairam Ramesh, the Indian environment minister, told the Guardian during a recent visit to Beijing. "That would put us in better negotiating position (with China).

To minimise the risk of water-related conflict, the two nations have agreed to share information about hydro-plans on the Tsangpo-Brahmaputra.

Indian media have raised concerns that Beijing may ultimately embark on a gigantic diversion scheme that would channel water away from India to the dry northern plains of China, but such fears are dismissed by Tsering, who says the dam at Metog would be for hydropower, not water diversion. "The laws of physics will not allow water diversion from the Great Bend."

[ALOCHONA] FW: Re. The men whose hands were chopped off By Farhat Taj

Date: Mon, 24 May 2010 14:45:16 -0400
Subject: Re. The men whose hands were chopped off

Very recently, on one of the Pakistani TV channels, I personally saw the horrific scene of these (formerly) able bodied young men who were shown sitting on the ground, each showing a heavily bandaged stump of a shortened forearm. Now, they are condemned to spend the rest of their lives crippled and dependent on others even for the simplest routine chores of life such as washing up for personal hygiene, wudu, fastening up their shalwars, or closing shut the buttons on their kurtas and countless any number of forced disabilities on the victims of sharia justice. Such is a state of existence to which a human being is reduced thanks to the inhuman and barbaric sharia laws. Now, who will support them and their families and dependents? Sharia sharif does not care for the human consequences of the inhuman act to be borne by the individuals or their families.

Last week I had posted the scenes of stoning to death of a woman in Somalia where a throng of spectators were looking on, some enthusiastically participating in the act of throwing stones at the half buried woman.

Some one having received that mail had commented "don't believe in any of this, for this is all fake and just a propaganda!"

Now, if the sharia clearly prescribes that such and such punishment be meted out (and it does) and the Islamic political parties continue to vigorously campaign for introduction of sharia in many of the Muslim countries, then why should one not believe when it is actually carried out publicly and shown in pockets of territories held by the sharia lovers? The person writing about the photographic evidence among a huge crowd of people should have rejoiced and applauded with pride, instead of protesting at all this being 'fake' and 'propaganda'!

Dear List Members, Orakzai agency in FATA is under control of the Taliban and Al-Qaida despite the ongoing military operation in the area. Recently Taliban in Orakzai chopped off hands of three tribesmen in Orakzai for an alleged theft. These men suffered this savagery because the state has surrendered its writ in the area to the militants (Pakhtun, Punjabi, Arbas and other foreigners). Now the state has abandoned them- and their families- no help has been extended to the men or their families by any state authorities. They are looking for help from any philanthropists in Pakistan or beyond. I wrote an Op-Ed on this issue in the Express tribune, which is on the following link. I share this Op-Ed with the list members in the hope that some philanthropists on the list might wish to extend some medical or other help to the men or their families who now live in pathetic conditions as IDP's in Kohat, Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa. http://tribune.com.pk/story/15510/the-men-whose-hands-were-chopped-off/ Regards Farhat Taj

The men whose hands were chopped off

By Farhat Taj

May 24, 2010

Recently the Taliban chopped off the hands of three young tribesmen in Orakzai – Amal Khan, Razim Khan and Khaisteen – for alleged theft. The men, who come from poor families, are under treatment in a Kohat hospital. I had a chance to talk with the brothers of two of them, who are looking after them in the hospital.
They said that the men were brought to a bazaar where their hands were chopped off in public and that they were more or less left to bleed to death with no medical help. The tribesman who had accused the three men of theft had forgiven them but he, I was told, was afraid to convey this to the Taliban, out of fear that they might chop off his hands as well. There is no authority in Orakzai where the family members of the three men could have sought help. The agency is under de facto control of the Taliban (including a chunk of the Taliban from Punjab) along with al Qaeda foreigners. I was told that despite the ongoing military operations many of the Taliban's private jails in the agency and training centres are still functioning.
This is not the first time that the Taliban have chopped off hands. On dozens of occasions in the past, they have amputated men, flogged people and hung up dead bodies on trees. And now this past week, they literally blew up two alleged spies by attaching explosives to them and triggering them — in a public place. Of course, this has the effect of causing extreme fear and dread in the local population which obviously has no choice but to see all this happen in silence.
Despite media coverage of this incident no one from the government has visited the three men who want to know under what law they were amputated. They said nobody can get them back their hands, but want to know who will compensate them for their loss in material terms, given that they have been crippled for life and will no longer be able to pursue a livelihood.
The root cause of the sufferings in Fata is the fact that the state of Pakistan doesn't see matters beyond carrying out military operations in the region. There seems to be no concept of doing something for the people of Fata, most of whom consider themselves as second-class citizens of Pakistan.
As for the three men, they and their families are now living as IDPs in Kohat. They are seeking help from philanthropists in Pakistan or beyond to help them finance the purchase of artificial hands so that the men can at least work to support their families. I would request the people of Pakistan to generously extend help to them as a symbolic defiance to the Taliban, al Qaeda and the state's flawed policies in the region vis-a-vis these militants.

Friends

FOR LONG I HAD BEEN CALLING THE NOTORIOUS FORCE OF THE HINDUS AS :

BESTIAL    SECURITY    FORCE ( BSF) whose motto is to kill n kill have fresh blood in their breakfast table as daily basis.

But our sarkar (manned by Sonar desciples of mujib) installed by the hindus of hindustaaan do not raise any voice against killing of Bangladeshis by the fascist janwars hindu BSF since BAL do not care about own citizens other than hindus interest as they are indebted to them for life long.

When it comes to right to life or human rights, record of Indian Govts is at the bottom low despite India being a democratic republic under a written constitution

which guarantees right to life. But there is a sky difference in what is said and actually practised. While the international community is striving to attain total

abolition of capital punishment even in cases where culprit commit heinous crimes, India's Border Security Force is such an inhuman organization which can kill

even an innocent person who touches India's border even inadvertently. Notwithstanding BSF's killer policy the smuggling activity on the border is often in news.

Narcotics drugs often cross borders and there are allegations that often there are nexuses between the smugglers and BSF men.
Human right activists have been raising loud cries against this organization but it is the first time that international community has taken notice of this notorious

organization when Canada refused visa to an ex-man of BSF. Though subsequently Canada made a tactical statement that it has respect for Indian security forces

but it didn't disown the earlier decision.
