India fightback video: 'Why I beat up three men with my belt'

TV grab of the incident The incident was captured by a passenger on a mobile phone

An unusual video of two sisters beating up three men, who were allegedly sexually harassing them on a moving bus in India, has gone viral on social media. Police have arrested the men and charged them with assault. The younger of the sisters, 19-year-old Pooja, spoke to BBC Hindi's Dilnawaz Pasha.

We were at the new bus stand in Rohtak in Haryana state when these men started throwing pieces of paper at us with their mobile numbers on them.

After they did it three or four times, I told them to stop.

But they wouldn't listen, they also tried to misbehave with me, saying "call us on this number".

After we boarded the bus, they also got on. They stood near us and started to tease us. "You don't deserve a seat on this bus," they said.

So I asked them who were they to tell me what I did or did not deserve?

At that point, a lady sitting behind us told the men to stop harassing us.

They turned to her and said, "Ok, we will leave them and harass you."

When they began harassing her, I intervened: "Your fight is with us, keep it to us. Don't harass this lady."

The men started to abuse me and touch me. I told them "if you touch me again, you'll get beaten up".

They called a friend on the phone and told him to "come over because we have to beat up some girls".

'Crossing the limit'

At the next village, their friend boarded the bus and then they attacked us. I took out my belt and hit them in self-defence.

They threw us out of the bus and came after us. They were still fighting with us.

No-one on the bus came forward to help us. But we were not surprised, no-one here protests. People here only tell women "don't do this, or don't do that". No-one tells men anything.

If we had any hope that our fellow passengers would save us, then why would I need to take out my belt? Then I would first ask them for help.

But the circumstances were such that I had to take out my belt and beat them.

Earlier, if you told men off, they would back off. But this time, these men crossed the limit and raised their hands on us.

If this video didn't exist, we wouldn't even know which village they were from. We only knew them by face.

Now we are being asked to compromise by the families of the men.

The men are due to join the army on 18 December and their families are telling us to "agree to a compromise, so that their jobs will be saved".

"We will beat up our sons in front of the entire village and ask them to touch your feet and ask for forgiveness," they said.

My father said if the men admitted their mistake, then we could compromise.

But then the families retracted.

They said "if we punish our sons or police beat them, they will kill themselves".

We are not under any pressure from the police, but the men's families say "if our sons kill themselves, we will hold you responsible and file a case against you".

Re: [mukto-mona] A Copy of the Koran for Subimal Chakrabarty

Well, you can think whatever you want to. But you are wrong when you think that selective praising of Islam by people like Gandhi, Tagore, Vivakananda, Bush Jr., Obama and Cameron were good for the world.

If a prominent Islamic leader/group told the world that the Islamic State was not Islamic or that those barbarians were to be kicked out of the so-called Islamic word by declaring them heretic or infidel, I would have had some respect for that. But when that does not happen, who is Obama or Cameron to say that those barbarians are not Muslims or their state is not Islamic? Nobody in the world considers Obama/Cameron to represent Muslims/Islam or to be expert on Islam.

In any case, let me try to put this into you – your question is preposterous. I did not ask anyone to hate Islam absolutely, nor did I ask anyone to hate Islam selectively. I do not hate anyone or any religious book. All I want from people is to use the intelligence that they have as human beings. I ask people to read the books with an open mind, and to make their own judgments with no bias. I believe without that the hatred among religious groups and by religious idiots against rational human beings could not stop.

Your complaint is that selective praying by them could not make the Indian Muslims better human beings! Do you think the results could have been quite different if they would have expressed absolute hatred for Islam?

A lot of great people did not praise religions selectively while being silent/inactive on what are wrong with the religions. In fact, reforms of religions happened by the actions of some great souls who pointed out and acted on faults in the religions, as opposed to praising them.

But look at the results of selective praising by some leaders in history. Gandhi, Tagore, Vivekananda, et al selectively praised Islam. Did it make the Muslims of the Indian sub-continent better human beings? Look at today's Pakistan. Look at Bangladesh - the country is filled with religious morons. To give just one recent example, a minister has been stripped of his cabinet and party memberships and he is now in jail. For what?

In the West, George (little) Bush called Islam a "religion of peace." But in spite of billions of US dollars spent in Afghanistan, he could not civilize the Muslims there enough to allow an Afghan Muslim who converted to Christianity to stay in his homeland. He had to smuggle the Afghan gentleman out of that country. Obama falsely claims that Islamic State does not represent Islam. Cameron dishonestly claims that the Islamic State barbarians are not Muslims. I am totally convinced that their kind of political correctness would not help the civilized world. BTW: have you seen any of the so-called moderate Muslim leaders declaring Islamic State apostate?

Oh, BTW: I give money to celebrate Durga Puja in my village not because I have much respect for the religion; I do it to help some of my poor family/friends/neighbors to have a good time. In fact, I made it clear to them. They know that I am not religious and I dislike excessive religiosity.

Oh, well, I do not have more time for this right now.

Dr. Roy
I am a confirmed atheist no doubt and I have been atheist for the last forty-seven years. There has been no deviation. But I am respectful to people who are religious. All my relatives including my wife and most of my friends are believers. I live among the believers. I go to pujas. My wife performs rituals and arranges pujas at home. I happily live with among the believers. I am sure we all do. Dr. Bain (a confirmed atheist) who is personally known to me sends money to his village in Bangladesh for pujas. I get emails from Priyobangla from which I know that one of the most active members of the forum organizes pujas. There is nothing wrong in it. Religious festivals are part of our culture. Participation by an atheist in it does not make him a believer.

Moreover, an atheist does not have to be a good man. Although he does not have a religion, he can pretty well be a communalist in his personal life and political life as well.

We cannot just use some good things about something to defend it; you need to take into account good and bad together to judge anything. A religiously motivated person would only talk about good things to defend his/her religion. When an atheist do that, to praise a religion, I don't see truthfulness in it; rather, I see cowardice and appeasement in this behavior.
This is not the first time I saw this tendency of him; this has been his traits for years. He says he is an atheist, but never defends his view, instead he defends a religion. I have gone through this many times with him in the past.
The truth is - religion is not peaceful; they are all violent. So, when someone tries to prove - his/her religion is peaceful, either he does not know his religion or this is  the propaganda to camouflage the violent nature of his religion.

I hope Professor Chakrabarty would read it, and randomly talk about what are in the Koran. Selecting verses that sound great to praise the religion would be dishonest and a disservice to humanity, especially when too many followers of Islam, including the Islamic State barbarians, try to follow everything. To too many followers, everything in the Koran and Hadit are to be followed, irrespective of where that would take the world/humanity. Re: [mukto-mona] A Copy of the Koran for Subimal Chakrabarty

Good points! However, it would be catastrophic if any western or eastern leader would say anything bad about Islam. One good example is Geert Wilders of Holland. He has become a pariah in Europe for his non correctness. I am sure people are very angry but they try to sugarcoat their frustrations. Who want have chaos in their own countries and beyond. The reforms need to come within but that is not happening. Probably, it would never happen in Islam. If it really happens, the religion itself might become totally redundant.
