[ALOCHONA] Re: [world_peace_movement] Oppression on Mahmudur Rahman _ Who the next Editor

Dear Friends,

Please find the details in the following link, how Mahmudur Rahman has been oppressed:

http://amardeshonline.com/pages/details/2010/06/13/34953

We are sure that this type of cruelty on an Editor will open the mouth of a chain reaction. The other editors may suffer in same way during this government or next government.

So, we r requested to refrain from these kind of oppression on Editors, Newspapers & free speech as these are the foundation of democracy.

Thank you,

M H Khan

[ALOCHONA] Re: Happy youth: 42% wants to leave the country

Most youths are happy, but half of them want to go abroad

British Council survey reveals

Eighty eight per cent of young people in Bangladesh are either happy or very happy while 42 per cent young people want to go abroad, said a survey report conducted by the British Council.

On the findings of the study, Foreign Minister Dipu Moni said: "The total number of young people in Bangladesh is around 55 million. Among this 88 per cent are happy or very happy while 1.6 per cent are unhappy. It's a positive sign for our country. As the young generation is happy they can bring a better future for the country."

She said 76.5 per cent of youth believe women should play a greater role in decision making affecting their community while 73 per cent of them own a mobile phone. Both are good signs as we are going on our way of fulfilling Vision 2021, she added.

The foreign minister said this while speaking at the launching ceremony of the survey report titled "Bangladesh: The Next Generation" at a city hotel on Saturday.

British High Commissioner Stephen Evans said: "This survey demonstrates the need and opportunities offered by mobilising one of the Bangladesh's greatest assets--the 55 million young people between the ages of 15 and 30 and pointed to the significance of active citizenship in building communities and improving livelihood to take Bangladesh forward."

British Council Director Charles Nuttall OBE recognised the transformational power of young Bangladeshis and added: "We hope the report will promote discussion on how the immense social and human capital that Bangladeshi youth have to offer can be harnessed."

The survey involved hour long interviews with 2,167 males and females aged between 15 and 30, which the British Council claims were representatives of the demographics of young people in Bangladesh.

The survey found that young people had an overall positive view of the country's progress - with 79 percent believing that "the country is heading in the right direction". However, 60 percent of the interviewees said that they felt that corruption will or may get worse in the next five years.

They ranked bribery as the second most important factor, next to education, in securing a job- with 12 percent believing it to be the major factor.

It also found that only 15 percent thought that student politics is a good thing. Another 36 percent said student politics has a detrimental effect on educational institutions.

[ALOCHONA] Fwd: Mahmudur Rahman tortured

------- Forwarded message ----------
From: Zoglul Husain zoglul@hotmail.co.uk

Amar Desh report:

http://www.amardeshonline.com/pages/details/2010/06/13/34953

Editor of 'The Daily Amar Desh', Mr. Mahmudur Rahman was tortured in police custody

Nasir Uddin Ahemd & Associates
Barrister & Advocates

For press purpose only

Former Energy Adviser to Bangladesh Govt. and the acting Editor of 'The Daily Amar Desh', Mr. Mahmudur Rahman was tortured in police custody at Cantonment Police Station on 09.06.2010 although, was not supposed to be there since, he was under control of Investigation Officer Mr. Rezaul Karim of Tejgaon Police Station. Mr. Rahman made this statement before the learned Metropolitan Magistrate Ms Shamima Pervin after being produced upon 3 days expiry of remand in connection with Tejgaon PS Case No. 2(6)10.

According to Mr. Rahman's version, in a dark room, being blindfolded, he was attacked by some police personnel or other individuals at around 1-30 am who unclothed him, started beating mercilessly. They did not quiz him in respect of the case for which remand was granted. Due to serious torture he became unconscious within half an hour. When woke up at around 4-30 am, he realized that he was somewhere else.

As a Counsel for Mr Rahman, I have submitted Lawyer's certificate in respect of the Hon'ble Supreme Court's order passed on 10.06.2010 with regard to Mr Rahman's remand order issued earlier in all cases before the Court. As per the Order of the Supreme Court, the Magistrate was bound to send Mr Rahman before a medical board for examination of his health. However, without following the order of the superior court, the Magistrate sent Mr. Rahman to the Jail custody and asked the jail authority to provide him medical treatment if necessary. I have heard that Mr Rahman has already been taken to Uttara Police Station or to Ditective Branch Office of Police at Minto Road on 4 days remand by an order of another Magistrate, which was completely beyond our knowledge and without informing us. If this is the case, then, the Magistrate and Investigating Officer committed an offence of contempt of the Supreme Court of Bangladesh. In due course, we will file contempt petition against those who violated the Hon'ble Court's Order.

Re: [ALOCHONA] Nimtali Fire

What an irony! It was not a shock not a tragedy. yes, as this kind of things are happening everyday, how that can be. it is a ritual, it is a vet to the alter of this nation. Blood that spill on the highway every passing day is required to keep the 'devi' alive. Not only those poor travellars lives but many others blood in random to be given. e to ek moha joggo shuru hayese 50 bosor dhore ( এতো এক মহাজজ্ঞ শুরু হয়েছে ৫০ বছর ধরে)। No, No. Mujib shouldn't be blamed. This blame game is emanating from the myth and legend (all are  exaggeratged) which any thinking mind should oppose. Mujib was there for only few years, how many rulers came and gone we had ample time and still have, to correct the situation.

Start from the government's land and housing policy, what do you make of it.

Rajuk - whose legacy it follows - Mujib, Zia, certainly you know the answer.

Look at the public safety rules, its legal values and its logistics.

And foremost - Dhaka's development planner, what city they have planned. Europe has congested neighborhood like old dhaka (when it was originally built).

Then comes you and I, what did we do seeing those lash ( লাশ) either on TV, street or in our neibourhood, blood was for the 'devi' but those bodies they were belong to one of us but how come nothing arouse in so many year in us.

You know why - we have not only lost our human characteristics but we all turned into 'devi', we want to make a case against or for our nationalist or shadhinotar pokhyer shokti and to emulate anther blame game.

an incorrigable nation and its thinking(?) bangals.

Nothing personal.

The New Age is far too dramatic and exaggerates the impact of this event on the population. I was in Bangladesh when this tragedy unfolded.

Was it a tragedy? Yes. Was it shocking? No, it was not. No one was surprised. No one was outraged. They only wondered when the next collapse would happen and how many more people would be allowed to die because of corruption in local government.

Be under no illusion - the victims were allowed to die nee killed by our politicians and the corruption they spawn and foster in our country.

How many building code violations have been ignored through bribes to the Rajuk and similar authorities?

Are you sure your brand new luxury flat in Dhaka is truly safe?

The simple fact is that life in Bangladesh is cheap. It has been made cheap by our political class and their sycophants. Mujib's polticization of state institutions is the direct cause of this and so many other avoidable tragedies that happen everyday in Bangladesh. Our nethris and their sycophants seek only to continue and en-trench this legacy further.

I brook no moral outrage to such events as long as we as a nation continue to tolerate our nethris for as long as we do, such tragedies are nothing but fodder for coffee table politicians. ....

....like myself.

Habibur Rashid Ismail agrees with Sheikh Hasina that fires make people destitute (June 9). It is indeed a remarkable and unique observation by both. Perhaps they could both help us further by focusing on who is responsible for such fires starting in the first place.

The dreadful fire which broke out at Nimtali in old Dhaka on June 3 and killed at least 118 people, including women and children, has left people across the country shell-shocked.
While expressing her instant reaction to the tragedy, the prime minister, Sheikh Hasina, said, `Fire makes people destitute.' She is absolutely right.
We want the survivors to be compensated soon. May Allah keep the departed souls in peace.

[ALOCHONA] Beijing awaiting Dhaka's proposal on building deep seaport in Chittagong

Beijing awaiting Dhaka's proposal on building deep seaport in Chittagong

China is waiting for a concrete proposal from Bangladesh to build deep seaport in Chitt-agong, Chinese Amba-ssador in Dhaka Zhang Xianyi said here Thursday.(UNB)

"China is likely to contribute to the development of the deep seaport," he told a press briefing at the embassy ahead of Chinese Vice President Xi Jinpeng's two-day official visit to Ban-gladesh on June 14-15.

Bangladesh sought China's assistance to build the deep seaport during Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's visit to Beijing on March 17-21. The Ambassador further said that China also has a positive attitude towards connectivity and promoting projects relating to roadway and railway links between the two countries to promote trade and economic cooperation. On Chitt-agong-Kunming highway through Myanmar, Zhang said all the three countries are very positive about building the tri-nation highway. "All the three players will have to come together. It needs time to coordinate the efforts."

Asked about the purchase of military hardware from China, he said the defence cooperation between the two militaries is excellent but did not say anything precisely about any purchase deal. "It's a normal tradeWe don't have major contract in last few years," he told a correspondent. The Ambassador termed Chinese Vice President Xi Jinpeng's visit to Bangladesh "very important" as it takes place on the occasion of the 35th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic ties between Dhaka and Beijing.

He said the bilateral trade and economic cooperation will be high on Xi Jinpeng's agenda alongside strengthening existing friendly relations. This is for the first time a Vice President from China is visiting Bangladesh. The high profile visit takes place within less than three months of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's visit to Beijing.
