Re: [mukto-mona] Religion-based Nationalism is back in Full Force

Secularism is a two way street! Some old and ancient Indian intellectuals have been fighting for their places in history and thus, you can't expect anything new except the old mantra that they preached and prescribed during the partition. What has happened since then is not important for them. They would not even dare or care to notice, let alone accept. These are basically pure idealists, who never cleaned their own clothes or living rooms. All of them were great at lecturing others!

A historian must tell the truth, and nothing but the truth. Romilla Thapar hides truth often.  She doesn't find any casualty during the regime changes that brought about the Muslim rule in India. I wonder if she is a recipient of petrodollar.

Unfortunately, most of the time, nationalism remains dormant, but, communalism is active 24/7. That's why - fighting communalism with nationalism, and Ms. Romila Thapar is trying to do, does not work. As you know, right after the liberation of India and Bangladesh, communalism lifted its ugly head, and remains prominent even today. Communalism will not go away as long as religion is there in the society. To fight communalism, one must fight religion.

In the 1960s we were confident that the use of religion for political mobilisation would decline because nationalism, namely, the secular, all-inclusive, anti-colonialism nationalism that brought us independence, would, despite Partition, be firmly established. This was in some ways such a firm belief that it was not thought necessary to specify the inclusion of secularism in the Constitution at the initial stage.  This has not happened. Religion as political mobilisation, and religion-based identity as the core of nationalism, sometimes called communalism, is back in full force.

Clinton Visits a Seattle High School, and Student Resentments Surface

Ahlaam Ibraahim, a senior, said, "I don't trust her because of her policies and how she's always switching up. Something in my gut says she isn't about what she states she is. It's like she's putting on a show for us."

Another student, Naima Yusuf, said, "I'm still hung over her calling [gangs of kids in urban areas] 'super predators' and then saying they needed to be brought to heel. This was and is still super insulting to me."

Still another student said, "I'm not really cool with her foreign policies and how she supports Israel indefinitely. The conflict in Palestine was a problem caused by western interference and by continuing to support the occupation, we are causing the deaths of hundreds of thousands of Palestinians."

My friend and DSC colleague Nazda Alam is running for a District Level Delegate seat to the Democratic National Convention. If you're a registered Democrat in the Fifth District, you should caucus for her on Saturday, at Watertown High School, 1 pm. Check your registration status at http://bit.ly/1IYJYjQ

Nazda is a social worker, a member leader of SEIU Local 509, an excellent community organizer, chair of the Muslim Voter Registration with Mass Dems, and the living embodiment of the American Dream. She deserves to attend the DNC, and the party will benefit from her presence as a representative of the South Asian and Muslim communities.

Good luck, Nazda! I hope to see you in Philadelphia!
