Re: [mukto-mona] How to follow religions correctly

Well, when I talk about "How to follow religions correctly", I certainly mean what should be the "practiced versions of religions." To practice religions like civilized human beings who care about harmonious coexistence of all innocent people, followers of most religions have to edit their religions and/or ignore some aspects of their religions to fit their common sense and what Dr. Roy called "human compassion."

I am sure Mr. Chakrabarty and I have seen innocent people who actually have very little knowledge of their religions. They realize that their God has also created people who do not have the same thoughts about God. They could see that it would be wrong for them to hate, discriminate against, or commit atrocities against other kinds of people. These people are good primarily because of their good common sense, not because of their religions.

I have no argument with Mr. Chakrabarty about good practiced versions of religions. However, "Every religion teaches tolerance about other religions" is a wrong statement if we go by what quite a few of the religions are by their books.

  • Both Jiten Roy and Sukhamaya Bain need to read my message on the "practiced" version of a religion. Peaceful coexistence is not a myth (exampe, Hindus vs Muslims in Bengal). Peace has sometimes been broken by nasty politics. During communal riots the members of the two different religious communities give shelter to one another. We just need to reflect on the past and the present as well.
  • Religion is not a unique thing. It has infinite versions. There are infinite levels of religious belief. If you want to program your GPS, make sure where you want to go, in other words, which version of religion is your destination.
  • Here you go Mr. Roy: "Whatever tolerance we see is due to societal laws, and out of human compassion." That is what I am talking about: this is the practiced religion. You have mentioned only two determinants. There are many more forces that tend to keep religions universally appealing. That helps build communal harmony. But there is always a risk.

Religion is like a GPS device, if you follow the turn-by-turn direction of it, you will end up in a predefined culture. This part is well tested and verified. Anything else is just guesswork or pipedream.

Religion, being a GPS system that can only take you to a predefined culture, cannot be used as a political system for a multicultural society. If you do, you will enforce a particular culture onto a multicultural society, and the outcome will be chaos and calamity in an otherwise peaceful society.

When we talk about religious tolerance, we should also remember that religion is a business also. Do you think any business like competitors? Whatever tolerance we see is due to societal laws, and out of human compassion. In my view, religion is a cultural hegemony, nothing more. As a result, the history of religious coexistence is written in blood.

I would like to comment on the following two comments:

S. Chakrabarty: "Every religion teaches tolerance about other religions."

J. Roy: "Most people believe in Allah in their own way."

S. Bain: Mr. Chakrabarty is very wrong here. I like Dr. Roy's statement. Please see below for some elaborations of these two comments.

None of the Abrahamic religions tolerate idolatry, which is a Hindu religious practice. People who identify themselves in terms of an Abrahamic religion, yet tolerate idolatry, do it in spite of their religion, not because of it. For example, many Christian communities in the USA allow Durga Puja in the churches because they have advanced enough to ignore some of the aspects of their religion, not because Christianity is not against idolatry. Enough reading and honest interpretations of the fundamentals of religions would show that many religions consider the following of other religions to be inappropriate, wrong, sinful and even punishable. I am personally reluctant to dig deeper into that. But I am sure Mr. Chakrabarty would find the example of idolatry that I noted here to be a valid one.

While almost all Muslims use the Arabic word Allah for the English word God, the word Allah was in use long before Islam came into being. Thus, Muslims really do not have a proprietary right on the word Allah. When a Christian or a Hindu prays to God, he is praying to Allah. In fact the Arab Christians do call God Allah. A Hindu should be able to use the Arabic word Allah as much as he uses the English word God to do his way of praying, including what would be clearly un-Islamic. A Bangalee Muslim should have no problem using the word "Ishwar" instead of the word "Allah." That should not cause anyone to lose his Islam.

Well, that's all for now.

[ALOCHONA] Govt, people protest at BSF DG remarks

Govt, people protest at BSF DG remarks

* Govt keeps protesting at border killing: Foreign Minister
* Firing in the border cannot be stopped: BSF DG
* Border killing under no circumstances acceptable: BGB DG
* Shooting at civilians in border a breach of int'l law: NHRC chair
* Border killing may damage diplomatic ties: DU teacher
* Border killing negates India's earlier assurances: Odhikar

The government and a cross-section of the people on Thursday protested
at the remark India's Border Security Force chief made in an interview
with the BBC Bengali Service that firing in the border could not be
stopped.

Experts said that such a remark would only encourage the Indian border
guards to shoot at Bangladeshis in the frontiers, which is 'a
violation of international law' and will have 'a negative impact on
diplomatic relations between the two neighbours.'

The Border Security Force director general, UK Bansal, said that it
was not possible for the Indian guards to stop firing in the
Bangladesh-India border.

The Bangladesh foreign minister, Dipu Moni, and the Border Guard
Bangladesh director general, Anwar Hossain, protested at Bansal's
remark.

'Firing in the border can never be stopped totally… So long criminal
activities would continue to take place along the India-Bangladesh
border, the BSF will have to prevent those offences and it is the duty
of the force,' said the BSF chief in the interview with the BBC
Bengali Service on Tuesday.

Asked for comments, the National Human Rights Commission chairman,
Mizanur Rahman, also protested at the

BSF chief's statement saying that shooting at civilians in the border
was a violation of international law.

He believed that such a remark would adversely affect the relationship
between the two countries.

Dhaka University international relations department chair Delwar
Hossain said that this was an irresponsible statement as Bangladesh
had been assured several times by the Indian government that there
would be no more firing by the BSF personnel on Bangladeshi civilians
in the border.

He said that this might have a damaging impact on the diplomatic
relations between the two countries.

Bansal made the comments at a time when human rights organisations and
the media across the world, even in India, are levelling allegations
that incidents of killing and torture of Bangladeshis by the Indian
border guards are increasing.

'The Bangladesh government has been continuously protesting against
these incidents of killing, firing and torture [by BSF]. The Indian
government agrees with the Bangladesh government that these incidents
in the border areas will not occur,' Dipu Moni said at a discussion in
Chandpur.

The foreign minister said that the two governments were trying to end
such border killing.

The Border Guard Bangladesh director general, Anwar Hossain, on
Thursday said that killing in the border under any circumstances was
not acceptable.

'Our standpoint is very clear. We do not shoot. We do not shoot at
Indian trespassers. We arrest and try them under the laws of our land.
We strictly follow the International Human Rights convention,' he told
news agency the United News of Bangladesh.

Former director general of the Bangladesh Rifles, now renamed as the
Border Guard Bangladesh, Fazlur Rahman termed Bansal's statement
provocative.

He said that the BSF chief's attitude showed that India wanted to
establish a master-servant relation with Bangladesh.

According to rights organisation Odhikar, the Indian border guards
have killed 935 Bangladeshis and injured 681 since January 2000.

The Indian guards have killed 205 and injured 220 Bangladeshis since
January 6, 2009, when the ruling Awami League-led alliance assumed
office.

The BSF chief's remarks blatantly negated the repeated assurances
Indian authorities gave to Bangladesh.

The Indian home minister, P Chidambaram, during a visit to Dhaka,
announced on July 30, 2011 that the BSF would use non-lethal weapons
and that they would no longer shoot at civilians under any
circumstances.

The television screening of recent brutal torture of a Bangladeshi
young man, Habibur Rahman, of Chapainawabganj, by the BSF sparked an
uproar by civil society and international human rights watchdogs.

Even leading Indian daily newspaper the Hindu on January 24 asked the
Indian government to apologise to Bangladesh for such inhuman torture.

The Hindu in the editorial on January 24 said, 'New Delhi needs to
make an unreserved apology to Bangladesh for the brutal conduct of its
Border Security Force personnel who were seen in a recent video
footage torturing a Bangladeshi man.'

The New York-based international rights watchdog, Human Rights Watch,
on January 31 asked the Indian government to prosecute the personnel
of its Border Security Force responsible for the recent torture on
Bangladeshis along the border.

The Indian government should prosecute members of the security forces
responsible for recent high-profile cases of torture to send a message
that such practices would no longer be tolerated, Human Rights Watch
said in a statement.

In a report headlined 'Bangladesh-India border: Wall of Death' posted
online on January 4, the GlobalPost said the barbed-wire fence
installed by India along the border 'is the world's longest — and
bloodiest — barbed wire fence.'

'Dubbed the "wall of death" by locals, the 4,000km barrier spans the
length of the fifth-longest border in the world, and is manned by the
BSF, whose guards kill both Bangladeshis and Indians with impunity,'
the report said.

Although the Indian border guards claim that they open fire only to
contain border crimes including smuggling, the killing of young girl
Felani sparked a huge criticism across the world.

Fifteen-year-old Felani Khatun was shot dead by the BSF from close
range on January 7, 2011 when she climbed up and reached the top of
the 2.5 metre high fence.

[ALOCHONA] Enjoy :) - Financial Times: Keep taking the testosterone

Keep taking the testosterone

By Charles Wallace

Financial Times

http://www.ft.com/intl/cms/s/0/68015bb2-51b8-11e1-a99d-00144feabdc0.html#axzz1lvaUa2UH

Until a few years ago, Doctor Lionel Bissoon, who practises what he calls integrative medicine on Manhattan's smart Upper West Side, mostly treated middle-aged women for what is politely known as cellulite. Then the financial crisis hit Wall Street and a strange thing happened: a stream of financial executives and traders began coming to him in the hope of being turned into alpha males.

Dr Bissoon, a doctor of osteopathic medicine, now specialises in treating men for testosterone deficiency. While impotence is often thought of as the main symptom of low levels of the hormone, it turns out that financial executives are hoping the hormone will sharpen their faculties and make them more competitive in the workplace at a time when many companies are sending underperforming employees into early retirement.

"Since the recession started, more guys want to be on top of their game," says Dr Bissoon. "All of these men are under tons of stress, and stress will reduce their levels of testosterone. As one patient told me: 'There's a whole bunch of whizz-kids beneath me who are ready to take my place.'"

America's inventive medical industry has even coined a new term to describe this ailment: andropause. Its reported symptoms include a lack of energy, drive and enthusiasm, not to mention a lower libido. One pharmaceuticals company, Abbott Laboratories, is even running TV adverts that ask viewers if they suffer from "Low T". It shows a middle-aged man unable to keep up with the hectic pace of the modern world in both the office and on the dance floor.

Demand for treatment has increased to such an extent that a Las Vegas-based company called Cenegenics plans to open a centre offering male hormone treatment near the NYSE in March.

Dr Bissoon says that when he first started offering testosterone therapy, he thought most of his clients would be gym rats hoping to build Arnold Schwarzenegger-style physiques. "I was surprised that 90 per cent of my patients have some involvement in the finance industry," he says. "They are upper-level management and most of them are in their 30s and 40s."

They typically complain of exhaustion after working Stakhanovite hours, an inability to focus and a general malaise about work. While some argue that too much testosterone, machismo and aggressive risk-taking are partly to blame for the financial crisis, many Wall Street workers apparently believe similar traits will give them the competitive edge to survive the downturn. With thousands of jobs expected to be shed within months, Dr Bissoon says that there is a pervasive fear among his patients that individuals who do not outperform will be summarily replaced.

Take John, a 40-year-old executive at a venture capital firm, who asked that his last name not be used. He went to Dr Bissoon feeling lethargic and unable to handle the 12-hour working days common at his firm. His regular doctor told him he was probably stressed out and depressed and should take antidepressants, which he felt did not adequately address his problem. "Wall Street is a play hard, work hard environment," John says. "I now have a bit more of an alpha male personality, and I'm able to get by on less sleep. It's the positive side of aggression. You change your mentality and start looking positively at the future."

Testosterone deficiency is technically known as hypogonadism. The Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism says the condition can be difficult to diagnose because there are so many vague symptoms. The treatment is still controversial because of concerns, yet to be proved, that testosterone can fuel the growth of prostate cancer in men who have latent cancer cells in their prostate glands. As a result, many mainstream physicians still refuse to prescribe testosterone therapy for men over 40.

Dr Bissoon provides his patients with testosterone only after giving them a thorough blood screening that includes a cardiac profile and tests for liver, colon and prostate cancer. He also provides nutritional advice to deal with stress in addition to testing for such conditions as unusually high levels of oestrogen, the female hormone.

Dr Bissoon maintains that taking testosterone enables many men to focus more clearly and exude confidence on the job. "If you're going to be trading on Wall Street or dealing with large sums of money, you had better be confident," he says. "The man who is wishy-washy is not going to be successful."

Dr Bissoon will soon face competitive pressures of his own when the Cenegenics clinic near the NYSE opens. Revenues at the company, which has 20 centres around the US with 20,000 patients, have increased from $37m in 2007 to $60m in 2011.

Cenegenics offers a deluxe treatment programme, but it is perhaps only someone with a Wall Street bonus who can afford it. For a $4,000 initial fee, a nurse even comes to collect your blood in the privacy of your own home. The patient then spends an entire day being probed and tested for a range of ageing-related issues at one of the company's centres – not only for hormone levels, but also for such problems as vitamin D deficiency.

The company uses a 70-year-old doctor named Jeffry Life (pictured) as a television pitchman. Dr Life looks like his balding jowly face has been Photoshopped on to the toned and muscled body of a much younger man. The commercial also shows another doctor with a much younger female companion who smiles and nods appreciatively when he talks about improvements to his libido.

"The business has really done well, especially these past two years," says Michale Barber, a physician in Charleston, South Carolina who was one of the first to sign up with Cenegenics 15 years ago. Each centre is independently operated by a physician who signs a partnership agreement with the Cenegenics firm in Las Vegas, and they share the profits.

Another sign that business is booming is that sales of testosterone injections, timed-release pellets and creams are increasing. For example, Abbott Laboratories, which acquired a testosterone cream called Androgel when it bought the pharmaceuticals business of Belgian chemical company Solvay for $6bn in 2009, says worldwide sales from the cream were $875m in 2011 – an increase of 35 per cent on the previous year.

Dr Bissoon says he even has a number of female patients from Wall Street who take testosterone because they want to appear more confident. They get much smaller doses than men because there is a risk they might grow facial hair or display other male characteristics.

However, that raises the question: are macho, testosterone-fuelled traders really better at making money? A study in 2001 by two economists at the University of California, Davis, called Boys Will Be Boys: Gender, Overconfidence and Common Stock Investment, showed that men trade shares 45 per cent more often than women and that this reduces their net earnings compared with female investors.

The reason: men are too overconfident.

Re: [mukto-mona] Fwd: [notun_bangladesh] Minister Romesh Sen on Teesta waters

Please do not judge everybody with his religion. Many of them were/are much more patriotic than the Jamatis and BNP. I appeal to your good sense. One more thing: never have I said that Tipaimukh is good for Bangladesh. We need objective study of the project. Emotion or partisanism has be shunned. This is called patriotism.

>>>>>>>>>> I agree. If someone feels our water resource minister Mr. Sen failed (It is a popular belief), we can criticize him. But saying just because he is a Hindu, he will ONLY protect India is not fair. Mr. Sen is a mild mannered gentleman. He was not in a position to pick the ministry he wanted (As far as I understand it). Yes, India may or may not influenced it, this is a guess only.

I think we can effectively praise or criticize any minister without getting into what religion (Or no religion!) he or she belonged to. I know it is a tall order considering the toxic culture of our sub-continent. However sooner or later, we have to make a solid attempt to be FAIR to all people (No matter what community she/he belongs to). If India or Pakistan don't want to change, let us start from this forum. Refrain (As much as possible) from linking religion with our position. Similarly if someone supports Islam that does NOT mean he/she automatically support violence or torture in the name of Islam or belongs to Pakistan.

At the end of the day, we belong to ONE country -----> Bangladesh. It is NOT Pakistan, it is NOT India.

We have own our faults and shortcomings. We have to learn from mistakes from past and get out of the prison of history. It is a new day and I hope this post will inspire few members to make an honest attempt to respect all faiths and opinions.

None of us will live in this world forever but our words and actions will be remembered. I hope at the end I'll be able to say I made an attempt to make our country better than how I found it. If enough of us feels that way, SURELY we'll get a better Bangladesh when our children will take over this country.

Hatred based on religion is an OLD concept which is blindly supported by ignorant fools. We have to judge people by their action.

Lastly (To my Muslim brothers and sisters), our beloved messenger of Allah Muhammad (PBUH) was known as "Mercy to the worlds"{ Source: Qur'an 21:107}. It would be wonderful if those of us claim to follow him becomes a source of "Mercy and love" to people around us. It is the right thing to do and surely if you do it for the sake of Allah (SWT), He will shower his blessings on you.

O ye who believe! stand out firmly for Allah, as witnesses to fair dealing, and let not the hatred of others to you make you swerve to wrong and depart from justice. Be just: that is next to piety: and fear Allah. For Allah is well-acquainted with all that ye do.

Shalom!

Recently we have been reminded that Ziaur Rahman requested India to build Tipaimukh dam. What about that? Our FM has also found some thing positive in it. Why do you pick on a Hindu minister? Please come out of that narrow world. Looks like you are still visited by Pakistani ghosts. India and their agents are at the roots of all evils! One more thing: there is a limit on the number of technocrats you can have in the cabinet. What matters is leadership capab ility. Many successful ministers are not experts in their respective fields. Look at Motia Chowdhury. Please do not judge everybody with his religion. Many of them were/are much more patriotic than the Jamatis and BNP. I appeal to your good sense. One more thing: never have I said that Tipaimukh is good for Bangladesh. As expected you supported  India's position as well as Sri Sen's position on Tipaimukh. Most Bangladeshis knew that,
Sri Sen will support or defend India's position and interest  on Tipaimukh Dam. My understanding is that it was a grave mistake by
Sheikh Hasin a to appoint a non-erxpert water resource Minister like Sri Sen who has zero knowledge about flood control. If he can't protect Bangladesh's national
interest he should have resigned from his Ministry as a faithful/patriotic Bangladeshi, He didn't do so nor will will do so.
Why he was  selected for this very important Ministry still a mystery to most observers. That's why this governments
critics like myself believe that Hasina's backer powerful Pronob Mukherjee might have recommended his name to India-friendly Hasina
and Hasina accepted that recommendation. If you donot believe this fact that's your choice.
Giving Gas to India was not comparable to accepting deadly Tipamukh.
I still believe that  Sri Sen will protect India's interert not Bangladesh's.
It's unthinkable that , India-friendly Hasina administration will file a complain to UN or any International body.
We should not ex pect that from Bharotbondhu Hasina at least.

Mr. Anwar is asking if Ramesh Sen was the choice of Pranab Mukherjee! Did he ask similar question when one BNP minister (Saifur Rahman?) was eager to give gas to India? Has Sen said any thing unrealistic? The world politics is such that win-win situation is possible through good relations with the big neighor, not by showing animosity. Sen did not look happy when he said that being a country in downs tream, we have to accept terms even if we may not be hundred percent happy about it. Even going to international court may not be a good idea.
As rergards Tipai, it is still in a controversial stage. It should be explored with open mind. Narrow politics must not influence the decision.

Sri Romesh Sen Minister for Bangladesh or India ?
Who rec himommended  to become water resource Minister of Bangladesh ?
Was He Hasina's choice or Pronobda's ?
Don't we have any flood control/water resouce expert in Awami League, who can direct this important Ministry to
protect our national interest ?
Why Hasina depending on this inefficient Minister tro protect Bangladesh's national interest ?

Bangladesh Economy is a Star in the World Economy, says UN Experts
Dr. Rob Vos, Director UN Department of Economic and Social Affairs (UN-DESA) while presenting the Annual Report on world economic situation stated that while economies of the developed countries of Euro zone and North America are teetering on the brink of another major downturn, few developing economies namely that of China and India and low income country like Bangladesh are maintaining high growth rates and higher per capita income growth in 2011.  Their growth is expected to remain robust; growth in China is projected to slow below 9% in 2012-2013, while India is expected to grow by between 7.7 and 7.9 per cent. However, among the least developed countries (LDCs), Bangladesh economy is maintaining a high growth rate over 6% and is expected to maintain its high growth rate in 2012 despite the global slowdown. It is a 'rising star' of economic growth and fiscal discipline.
