[mukto-mona] Bombing near 1 of Islam's holiest sites in Saudi kills 4

Bombing near 1 of Islam's holiest sites in Saudi kills 4

AYA BATRAWY,Associated Press 3 hours ago

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP) — A suicide bombing outside one of Islam's holiest sites killed four Saudi security forces on Monday, and similar attacks outside a Shiite mosque and a U.S. Consulate in two other Saudi cities raised fears of a coordinated assault aimed at destabilizing the Western-allied kingdom.

The Interior Ministry said five others were wounded in the attack outside the sprawling mosque grounds where the Prophet Muhammad is buried in Medina. Millions of Muslims from around the world visit the mosque every year as part of their pilgrimage to Mecca.

The ministry said the attacker set off the bomb in a parking lot after security officers raised suspicions about him. Several cars caught fire and thick plumes of black smoke were seen rising from the site of the explosion as thousands of worshippers crowded the streets around the mosque.

No group has yet claimed responsibility for any of the attacks.

Altayeb Osama, a 25-year old Sudanese visitor to Medina and resident of Abu Dhabi, said he heard two large booms about a minute apart as he was heading toward the mosque for sunset prayers. He said police and fire trucks were on the scene within seconds.

"It was very shocking that such a thing happens in such a holy place for Muslims, the second holiest place in the world. That's not an act that represents Islam," Osama said. "People never imagined that this could happen here."

The ruling Al Saud family derives enormous prestige and legitimacy from being the caretakers of the hajj pilgrimage and Islam's holiest sites in Mecca and Medina. The attack may have been an attempt to undermine the Saudi monarchy's claim of guardianship.

In 1979, extremists took over Mecca's Grand Mosque, home to the cube-shaped Kaaba, for two weeks as they demanded the royal family abdicate the throne.

Last year, the Saudi government was accused of gross negligence by regional foes, primarily Iran, after a crush of pilgrims during the annual hajj killed at least 2,426 people and a crane collapse over the Grand Mosque killed 111 worshippers.

The Prophet Muhammad's mosque was packed Monday evening with worshippers during the final days of the Muslim holy month of Ramadan, which ends in the kingdom on Tuesday. Local media say the attacker was intending to strike the mosque when it was crowded with thousands of worshippers gathered for the sunset prayer.

Qari Ziyaad Patel, 36, from Johannesburg, South Africa, was at the mosque when he heard a blast just as people were breaking their fast with dates. Many at first thought it was the sound of traditional, celebratory cannon fire, but then he felt the ground shake.

"The vibrations were very strong," he said. "It sounded like a building imploded."

State-run news channel al-Ekhbariya aired live video of the mosque filled with worshippers praying hours after the explosion. It also showed footage of Saudi King Salman's son and the Governor of Medina, Prince Faisal bin Salman, visiting security officers wounded in the blast and the site of the explosion.

Also Monday evening, at least one suicide bomber and a car bomb exploded near a Shiite mosque in eastern Saudi Arabia, several hours after a suicide bomber carried out an attack near the U.S. Consulate in the western city of Jiddah.

Saudi Arabia has been a target of Islamic State attacks that have killed dozens of people. In June, the Interior Ministry reported 26 terror attacks in the last two years.

The possibility of coordinated attacks across different cities in Saudi Arabia on the same day underscores the threat the kingdom faces from extremists who view the Saudi monarchy as heretics and enemies of Islam. Saudi Arabia is part of the U.S.-led coalition fighting the Islamic State group in Iraq and Syria.

The attack in the eastern region of Qatif did not appear to cause any injuries, said resident Mohammed al-Nimr. His brother, prominent Saudi Shiite cleric Nimr al-Nimr, was executed in January after a court found him guilty of sedition and inciting violence for his role in anti-government protests — charges his supporters reject.

Qatif is heavily populated by Shiites, who are a minority in the Sunni-ruled kingdom. Al-Nimr told The Associated Press the blasts there happened when most residents of the neighborhood were at home breaking the daily Ramadan fast.

The Interior Ministry said it was working to identify the remains of three bodies at the site of blast, suggesting there may have been three attackers.

IS and other Sunni extremists consider Shiites to be apostates deserving of death, and have previously attacked Shiite places of worship, including a suicide bombing on a Shiite mosque in Qatif in May 2015 that killed 21 people.

Earlier Monday, near the U.S. Consulate in Jiddah, a suicide bomber detonated his explosives after two security guards approached him, killing himself and lightly wounding the two guards, the Interior Ministry said.

Interior Ministry spokesman Maj. Gen. Mansour al-Turki said the guards noticed the man was acting suspiciously at an intersection on the corner of the heavily fortified consulate, near a hospital and a mosque. The Interior Ministry did not say whether the bomber intended to target the U.S. diplomatic compound.

No consular staff were wounded in the attack.

The ministry said the bomber was a Pakistani citizen residing in the kingdom. There are around 9 million foreigners living in Saudi Arabia, which has a total population of 30 million.

Al-Ekhbariya said security forces detonated six explosive devices found at the scene of the attack near the consulate.

A 2004 al-Qaida-linked militant attack on the U.S. Consulate in Jiddah killed five locally hired consular employees and four gunmen. The three-hour battle at the compound came amid a wave of al-Qaida attacks targeting Westerners and Saudi security posts.

[mukto-mona] The Daily Star online report on one of the deadly attackers at the Holey Artisan Bakery in Dhaka

The Daily Star online report on one of the Jihadists named Mubasher reveals the process of the transformation of a young teenager to a barbarian. One should ponder about this transformation process of this JIhadist. Let's examine Mubasher briefly and the series of events that took place centering his transformation from a young teenager to an Islamic terrorist. Let me summarize the items of the Daily Star online report in a chronological order as follows:

(1) Mubasher was an impressionable teenager (18-year old) preparing for his A-Level exam.
(2) He was deeply interested about his faith that is Islam.
(3) At one point of time, Mubasher stopped sketching.
(3) His father Mr. Meer Hayet Kabir wanted him to explore Islam more (because of Mubasher's interest) by reading the Quran directly from the source without going through any warped interpretation.
(4) Mr. Kabir gave an English translation of the Quran which Mubasher studied.
(5) Mubasher went missing on February 29, 2016
(6) On July 1, 2016, he was identified as one of the attackers in the deadly attack on the Holey Artisan Bakery in Dhaka.

If we observe the above series of occurrences centering this teenager, it should be clear that one event led to the other. Does Islam allow sketching? If the answer is negative, then item 3 occurred as a result of item 2. Mubasher was given an English translation of the Quran. Since he was deeply religious, he studied the deep-rooted teachings with proper meanings in English. There were not supposed to have any difficulty for him to understand the meaning because he was an English medium A-Level student. After studying the Quran (number 4), the outcome is number 5. He went missing and appeared as a fierce Jihadist showing dreadful barbarity (number 6). What did happen between numbers 4 and 6? Did he learn anything positive after studying the Quran?

Let's agree with his relatives and assume that some extremists influenced him and/or mentored him at a stage between numbers 4 and 6. If he learned something positive from the Quran, he was not supposed to fall into the trap of whoever those extremists/mentors were. The rightly guided teachings of the Quran were supposed to keep him on track. He was supposed to inform his dad about the derailed extremists who were trying to allure him through some enticing Jihadist ideology. As the events unfolded later with outcome as number 6, it can be concluded that he aligned willingly with the extremists, who probably mentored him further to perform an awful act along with his fellow Jihadists. Did his in-depth study of the Quran help him align with the extremists for Jihad? For the sake of preventing deplorable and appalling acts of the Jihadists, the Islamic thinkers (in Bengali "Chintabids") should examine the reasons for the transformation of a teenager like Mubasher to a disgraceful Jihadist.

@ Ms. Kabir

"More of our boys and girls will mutate from man to monster. We will never feel safe."- Ms Kabir

Yes, that has already been happening already with Muslims killing more Muslims. However, when the problem being spilled over to other infidel countries, they would not hesitate to cut down Muslim immigration and start profiling Muslim citizens to secure their home lands. Can we blame them? If this nonsense killing goes on for another year or so, Muslims would become the pariahs of the world. People would stop talking politically correct things about Muslims.

 The roots of
 reality

 Ayesha Kabir

We have been in denial too long.
Don't shy away from the scenes of bloody dead bodies
 strewn askew on
the floor of the restaurant. If you can look at the smiling
 faces of the
young killers, heads wrapped in red checkered cloth and
 automatic
weapons in the hands, then you can look at the tragic scenes
 of death
 too.
This is reality. This is a reality we have been shying
 away from for
too long. This is the reality of which we have been in
 denial. No more.
No more can we write off such terrorism as random
 killings or
isolated incidents. What has happened in Paris, in Brussels
 and in other
places around the world, has now happened here.
The enemy is with us, the enemy is among us.
The killers of the recent tragic incident at Holey
 Artisan restaurant
in Dhaka were no stereotyped semi-educated parochial
 madrassa students,
driven by poverty to fanaticism. These were young men,
 still just boys,
from affluent educated backgrounds. They were modern city
 boys,
educated in renowned schools, full of fun and life. Then
 they changed.
They changed into monsters who could actually slaughter
 innocent people
in cold blood. How could they commit such atrocities? What
 drove them to
such senseless murder? What sort of indoctrination did they
 receive
that instigated them to such brutality? Who made them like
 this? Who
contacted them and how? The questions go on…
But questions are not enough. The answers must be there.
 If we can't
find the answers to these questions, we will never be able
 to forgive
ourselves for these deaths. And the deaths will continue.
 More of our
boys and girls will mutate from man to monster. We will
 never feel safe.
No matter how much security do we put in place, no matter
 how
advanced our counter-terrorism measures may be, this evil
 cannot be
stopped unless destroyed at the roots. That is where we need
 the
 answers.
What drives these young people to such extremism? They
 were grown and
nurtured as normal young people, what happens along the way
 that
changes them so radically? These are questions that must be
 addressed
 seriously.
The answers are there. Some of the very common answers
 are
frustration with the western way of thinking, with the
 injustices, with
the anti-Islamic propaganda spread globally, with what they
 perceive as
immorality and sinful ways of life, with the turmoil in the
 Middle East
and the complexities of international politics therein. But
 the young
have always had a fair share of frustrations. Youth has
 always been
angry. But the expression has never been so destructive.
 Rebellion has
had different forms, has had political implications and
 social
outbursts. Now things have become dark, ominous and
 insidious. Evil
forces have taken over the impressionable young minds.
The killers at the Holey Artisan restaurant were cold
 blooded
killers. There can be no mercy for them. No words can
 describe their
heinous cruelty, their inhuman bent of mind. If they were
 truly
religious persons with deep faith, they would never have
 been able to
slaughter a fellow man, innocent men, women and children.
 They claim to
be religious, but how will they answer to their Creator?
They do not answer to the Creator. They answer to the
 people who have
motivated them into this militancy. Even while in the midst
 of the
killing spree at Holey, they were reporting back to whomever
 their
"bosses" were, giving blow-by-blow accounts of the
 events, updates and
pictures. Surely the intelligence agencies will be screening
 these calls
  and messages now.
The innocent victims who died are lost forever. What
 trauma they
experienced will never be known; those horrors have died
 along with
them. May they rest in peace forever, in a place far better
 than this
 cruel world.
Meanwhile, the survivors will have to live on, haunted
 with this
memory. In this devastated state of sorrow, shock and
 trauma, they have
been undergoing interrogation by the state security
 agencies, having to
relive the horrors all over again. Undoubtedly this
 interrogation is
needed. And so is immediate and prolonged therapy. It will
 take a lot
for them to recover from their post trauma disorder.
And what about the families of the victims? What
 consolation can be
given to them? There is really nothing to say or do, nothing
 than can
relieve them of this pain, this hollow sense of loss.
The challenge ahead is to uproot this dangerous evil
 presence in
society. Crossfire and gunfights are obviously not the
 answer or the
cure. While all the militants must be caught and tried,
 interrogated to
locate the mastermind behind these acts, the challenge is
 even bigger.
The task ahead is a mammoth one.
With madrassas the problem was a relatively easier one.
 There were
programmes to modernise madrassas, include pragmatic studies
 in the
madrassa curriculum and ensure that these students would be
 fit to join
the mainstream job market when they graduated. This
 programme has not
been carried out to satisfaction, but it is doable.
But what about the youth who are already modern,
 outwardly
westernised and from well-to-do families? When a young
 person turns to
religion, are we to be alarmed instead of being happy? That
 does not
bode well. Religion is supposed to be a healthy construct.
 It is not a
drug or a cult. So it will take much careful study and
 action to set
 things straight.
Whether it is the state, educational institutions,
 parents and
guardians, the media, or those who mobilise public opinion,
 all must
come forward to ensure a healthy, progressive generation of
 young
people. These young people must be made aware of the
 impending dangers
of indoctrination. They must be imbibed with the spirit of
 humanity.
They must build a safeguard against the evil that targets
 their minds.
Such values must be inculcated from an early age, at home,
 at school, in
our mosques and other institutions. Our imams and religious
 scholars
must come forward teach the new generations the true spirit
 of faith.
Everyone of us must stand vigilant against this new
 reality which has
dawned upon us. The onus is naturally on the government to
 protect the
nation from these militants. They have the institutions, the
 security
forces and all facilities on hand to address this
 challenge.
However, from the state, to the educational institutions,
 to the
family unit and down to the individual, each and everyone
 has a role to
play. It was those unfortunate people at Holey that fateful
 evening. It
could be anyone of us next.
Looking away from death won't make death
 disappear.

I was waiting to hear much more fury in her address to the nation: something like,ঘড়ে ঘড়ে দুর্গ গড়ে তোল, তুমাদের যাহ কিছু আছে তাই নিয়া রুখে দারাও। Instead, I heard her mild preventive initiative and her respectful appeal to these people:আপনারা এসব কাজ থেকে বিরত থাকুন।
Sure, they will follow her appeals; we just have to wait and see.
This speech is totally out of tune.
