[ALOCHONA] Dirty CFL Bulbs: Big Payoffs for Electric Companies?

Dirty CFL Bulbs: Big Payoffs for Electric Companies?

I just returned from the Health Freedom Expo in Long Beach, California where I interviewed an array of experts in fields pertaining to health. One of the more fascinating interviews was on the subject of "dirty electricity". One of CMNs regular viewers, Joe, has been suggesting for years that we take this subject on and I think we've finally connected with the right people.

Donna Fisher has authored 3 books on the subject of dirty electricity and it's unhealthy, even deadly, effects on human health. I interviewed her and Dave Stetzer, a gentleman who is known as the top Poor Power Quality Expert in the world. Both of these fascinating interviews will air on CMN over the next couple of months. Meanwhile, there's something I don't want to wait to share with you.

After my interview with Dave Stetzer, I began asking him about the Compact Flourescent Light (CFL) bulbs, which I cannot bear to be around.

First he began telling me a story about a Chinese Restaurant that had been a favorite in his community, always crowded. The restaurant closed for a short time to complete a remodel. They re-opened with an energy saving CFL over each table. Within a very short period of time the restaurant was out of business. The reason? These bulbs emit a type of frequency that make people feel unwell – including myself. You leave the restaurant not feeling well and attribute it to the food (to say nothing of that sickly yellow green tint to your dining companion's skin!). After a couple of visits you don't return. The food was the same, the lighting was different, the restaurant is gone.

Scott, in trying to do the energy conscious thing, put them in our home when they first appeared on the market. I didn't know he had switched out the light bulbs. From the first flip of the switch I no longer wanted to be in the kitchen, where I do quite a bit of cooking. I asked Scott what was wrong with our lighting, they made me feel depressed and I wanted to get as far away from them as I could. This, I hear, is not an uncommon reaction to these bulbs.

This prompted me to ask Dave Stetzer why the government was pushing them on the public – mandating them. We may have hit the jackpot with his answer. He began by telling me that the electric industry is a top contributor of 'soft funds' to U.S. senators and congressional representatives, ahead of big pharma. He continued:

"Compact Flourescent Lights (CFSs) generate high frequency transients, which, in turn, are on the electrical wires in your home or office. This causes induction disk meters (the meters the electric company reads located on the side of your home) to read inaccurately."

An electrical engineer by profession, Dave is by no mans a conspiracy theorist, but he continued by telling me that he have never seen one of these meters read on the low side, only the high side. The net effect is that the electric companies can deliver less energy as a result of the use of CFLs, but your meter readings would be higher, which is pure profit to the electric company without the need for a rate increase. Bingo!

Meanwhile, there are many reports that the radio frequency radiation and ultra violet radiation from these lights is causing a wide array of health issues, to say nothing of the toxicity of the bulb themselves, which uses mercury as an essential component.

As always, it appears the most direct route to motive can be found by following the money. Meanwhile, we're buying up the old fashioned incandescent bulbs before they are no longer available. Dave suggests using LEDs, if possible, as they are a clean source of energy. The only issue is cost. Last we checked the cost of one LED common flood light was around $40. This price should be going down in the future, however, to make them more accessible to all of us.

For more information on dirty electricity, Dave's site provides a list of related articles at www.stetzerelectric.com

Meanwhile, feel free to circulate this blog to anyone you know who cares about this issue.

[ALOCHONA] Supreme Court Bar Association polls

Supreme Court Bar Association polls

Dhaka, Apr 1 (bdnews24.com) — BNP loyalists swept the Supreme Court Bar Association polls as results were announced early Friday after two days of voting that saw a very high turnout.

Khandker Mahbub Hossain, an adviser to the BNP chairperson, was re-elected president while Mohammad Badruddoza Badal became the new general secretary of the influential lobby group of Bangladesh's top lawyers. Fahima Nasrin, a former deputy attorney general during the BNP-Jamaat alliance government, won for treasurer.

In all, the BNP-backed Jatiyatabadi Ainjibi Oikyo Parishad bagged 11 of 14 seats at stake.

One of the two vice presidents went to the Awami League-backed Sammilita Ainjibi Samannoy Parishad. The ruling party supporters also won a post of assistant secretary and a member.

The pro-government panel was led by Abdul Baset Majumder and S M Abul Hossain, for president and general secretary respectively.

A third panel, Independent Lawyers' Forum, nominated Mohammad Shahjahan for general secretary post. The panel's president candidate, maverick politician Nazmul Huda, decided not to run at the last minute, reportedly after "understanding" with the leadership of the BNP, the party that had ousted him for poor disciplinary records.
A third individual, Zakir Hossain, however, ran for president independently.

Bar official Nimesh Chandra Sen said 36 lawyers vied for the 14 seats on the executive committee. Of the 2,318 voters, the number of valid votes cast stood at 2085. "At almost 90 percent, this is a very high turn-out," said one lawyer. The 10am-5pm polling ran for two consecutive days on Wednesday and Thursday.

In the last elections, the BNP-backed panel won seven posts, including those of president and general secretary, while the Awami League-backed panel won the rest, including the treasurer and vice president posts.

[ALOCHONA] FW: In denial: a scholar ignores overwhelming evidence of rape in 71

In denial: a scholar ignores overwhelming evidence of rape in 71

March 31, 2011
victim report3Allegation of rape and violence in war is extremely difficult to substantiate in the courts. Horrific news of rapes, based mostly on witness accounts, begins to surface only towards the end of a war. By that time, evidence (physical) commonly accepted in the civil courts would no longer be available. Perhaps, the absence of such evidence motivates the apologists of perpetrators, like Sarmila Bose, to deny any such violence.
Nevertheless, overwhelming evidence, which include books, news reports, witness accounts, video documentary, and victims' testimonies of rapes by Pakistani military personnel and its East Pakistani collaborators were available at the time when Sarmila Bose had been preparing the manuscript for her article. Sadly, she opted to disregard all those evidences, perhaps, considering them detrimental to her self-serving explanation and claimed "no rape of women by Pakistan army found in the specific case studies: In all of the incidents involving the Pakistan army in the case studies, the armed forces were found not to have raped women."
She not only denied any act of violence on Bengali women by Pakistani army or by their collaborators, but seemed to be blaming Bengali officers and staff for committing such violence against West Pakistani and Bihari women, when describing the mutiny of EPR at Mymensingh cantonment on March 27 and violence at Crescent Jute Mills in Khulna on March 27-28. She backed up her claim citing the white paper published by the Pakistani government in 1971 and alleged interviews with mill workers and "Bihari" settlers, conducted in 2004.
Mookherjee (2006), in her rebuttal to Sarmila Bose's paper, presented some evidence of violence against Bengali women by Pakistani army. Additional evidence is presented here to remind the readers of Sarmila Bose's wilful disregard of the available proof. For example, Bose ignored Susan Brownmiller (1975), a well cited and authoritative book on violence against women, who reported the number of rapes committed by Pakistani military to range between as low as 200,000 to as high as 400,000. Adam Jones, a scholar on gendercide, quoted Brownmiller as saying, "Rape in Bangladesh had hardly been restricted to beauty."
Jones states that girls of eight and grandmothers of seventy-five had been sexually assaulted. "Pakistani soldiers had not only violated Bengali women on the spot; they abducted tens of hundreds and held them by force in their military barracks for nightly use… Some women may have been raped as many as eighty times in a night."
Jahan (1997), another well cited study, also ignored by Sarmila Bose, described the horrific violence by Pakistan army. Although Pakistani sources tend to dispute the number of rapes reported in Brownmiller, they stop short of entirely denying the contention that rape had indeed happened. Yet, Sarmila Bose, an alleged scholar, did not hesitate to deny the rapes by Pakistani military. She also disregarded Chaudhury (1972), providing vivid description of violence against women during the Liberation War.
Excerpts from Chaudhury read: "Some army officers raided the Rokeya Hall, the girls' hostel of Dacca University, on October 7, 1971. Accompanied by five soldiers, Major Aslam had first visited the hostel on October 3, and asked the lady superintendent to supply some girls who could sing and dance at a function to be held in Tejgaon Cantonment. The superintendent told him that most of the girls had left the hostel after the disturbances and only 40 students were residing but as a superintendent of a girls' hostel she should not allow them to go to the cantonment for this purpose. Dissatisfied, Major Aslam went away. Soon after the superintendent informed a higher army officer in the cantonment, over the telephone, of the major's mission. However, on October 7, at about 8pm Major Aslam and his men raided the hostel. The soldiers broke open the doors, dragged the girls out and stripped them before raping and torturing them in front of the helpless superintendent. The entire thing was done so, openly, without any provocation, that even the Karachi-based newspaper, Dawn, had to publish the story, violating censorship by the military authorities. In seven days after liberation, about 300 girls were recovered from different places around Dacca where they had been taken away and kept confined by the Pakistani army personnel. On December 26, altogether 55 emaciated and "half-dead" girls on the verge of mental derangement were recovered by the Red Cross with the help of the Mukti Bahini and the allied forces from various hideouts of the Pakistani army in Narayangunj, Dacca Cantonment, and other small towns on the periphery of Dacca city."
The incidence, as mentioned in the excerpts, was also reported in the Karachi-based daily, Dawn. But Sarmila Bose seemed to have had no clue about it.
Even, the US-based NBC news network broadcasted a documentary on the victims of rape by Pakistani military on February 20, 1972. In the broadcast, the narrator can be quoted saying, "It's the women who are silent, women like Saeeba…she is sixteen years old, widow and pregnant with a child of a Pakistani soldier. Like thousands of women in Bangladesh she is carrying a child which she doesn't want… like many women who are raped by Pakistani soldiers, Saeeba is disgraced among her people…."
This report also focused on a government shelter where many of the rape victims had babies (often referred to as war babies) and many had to be aborted… No mention of this broadcast could either be found in Bose's so-called "systematic analysis."
In a recent documentary "War Crime of 1971", Shahriar Kabir presented testimonies of Ferdousi Priyobhashini, Nazma Begum and other victims of the Pakistani military. None of these seem to have made any dent on Sarmila Bose's tenacious defence of Pakistani military either, as reflected in her attitude in the appearance at a book launching ceremony at Woodrow Wilson center on March 15, 2011.
Sarmila Bose's deliberate efforts to deny any violence against women by Pakistani military are also reflected in her frequent use of the word "male" in phrases like "adult male members of their family," when describing attack on faculty residences in Dhaka University, "…about 14 men and one child" when describing onslaught on minority in Shankharipara, and "one male Hindu refugee" when recounting the massacre by Pakistani Military in Chuknagar, Khulna, in May 1971.
A 1996 UNICEF report on sexual violence against women ascribes sexual violence as attacks on the victim's family and culture in a society where women are "viewed as repositories of a community's cultural and spiritual values." Similarly, Pakistani military violence against Bengali women was pre-meditated assault on the Bengali culture and the self-rule of the East Pakistani people. Denying such assault or any attempt to discount the severity of atrocities committed by the Pakistani military is an affront and a new assault to replace facts with twisted views of allegedly self-righteous scholars.

RE: [ALOCHONA] EPW - The 1971 Genocide: War Crimes and Political Crimes by Jalal Alamgir , Bina D Costa

Mr Hannan

Certainly the results of the survey should be released if does indeed exist along with all statistical assumptions etc about its viability. I cant speak for others but I certainly have made all efforts possible in my power to read accounts of all sides. Bangladeshis, Bihari, Indian, Pakistani and foreign accounts. There is no argument that people died, women raped and beastly atrocities conducted by all sides including that of the Bihari.

I think in the interests of moving this along towards resolution that the group that you speak for acknowledge fully the role they played in all this. Without such an acknowledgement and expression of remorse it is just a game of upmanship and trying to change the subject while issue just boils inside.

Do You know that a survey was conducted in 192-73 period by the government of Bangladesh. Later it was not released .The number of deaths indicated there was around fifty thousand including Biharis and Razakars. It is better for the government to release that if it is still available in the archive. To read various sides of the matter we should read the Indian, Pakistani, Bangladesh and Western reports.Sharmila Bose of India's book is a new addition.

The 1971 Genocide: War Crimes and Political Crimes

Jalal Alamgir , Bina D Costa

A combination of factors has prevented those involved in the horrific genocide of 1971 in Bangladesh being brought to justice. Regional power politics, the economic considerations of Bangladesh immediately after its independence and continuing internal political strife have together held the process back. Now, the return to power in Dhaka of the Awami League has led to a new attempt at conducting war trials of the protagonists – most of whom belong to the Jamaát-e-Islami. But the government has to grapple with time deadlines, differences between domestic and international law and other complexities as it tries to bring about delayed justice for the wrongs done four decades ago. India and Pakistan also have important roles to play in helping the Bangladesh government in this endeavour. View Full Article

Dear Ejaz

Yes a Rock and Roller he may but can he dance the boogie woogie!!!

Incidentally, I am told he is a member of a prominent dynasty with bloodlines going every which way. Furthermore, his political lines extending to all parties and factions.  Not that it matters to me since Bangladesh has to deal with its inherited political/ruling culture and that change must come naturally not through violent short cuts based on some altruistic individual or group's opinion whether such forcible removal is justified or not.

Hope this is not the stirrings of a "softie" phase. That would seriously undermine the 'angry young man" tough talking no nonsense person I have become so used to and fond of.

Re: [ALOCHONA] Mujib as `jatir pita' why Suronjits r in hard line ?

I think this is a cheap shot at a Hindu politician for some cheap laugh. He cannot do anything unless it has been "Approved" by his leader. Which goes back to a Muslima. We should not abuse religion of anyone in politics. It is un-Islamic to begin with.

Dont' think any of our politicians actually done anything worth mentioning (Except using it for politics) for any religion in our country in last 30-40 years. So let us talk about real issues. Islam does NOT teach us to abuse other faiths.

Revile not ye those whom they call upon besides Allah, lest they out of spite revile Allah in their ignorance. Thus have We made alluring to each people its own doings. In the end will they return to their Lord, and We shall then tell them the truth of all that they did.

Re: [ALOCHONA] Dr. Fazlur Rahman Khan - Architect of Sky Scrappers

From:
Mr. Asok Dasgupta, Kolkata

Thanks for telling in details about  Dr. Fazlur Rahman Khan - Architect of Sky Scrappers.

I quote below a few lines from that :
"Khan completed his undergraduate coursework at Bengal Engineering College (Now Bengal Engineering & Science University, Shibpur). He received his bachelor's degree from the Engineering Faculty of University of Dhaka (Now BUET) in 1951 while placing first in his class. A Fulbright Scholarship and a Pakistani government scholarship (as Bangladesh was East Pakistan then) enabled him to travel to the United States in 1952 where he pursued advanced studies at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. In three years Khan earned two Master's degrees — one in structural engineering and one in theoretical and applied mechanics — and a PhD in structural engineering".

I guess Dr.Rahman had started as a student of Bengal Engineering College, Shibpur  but shifted later to University of Dhaka (Now Buet) wherefrom he got his bachelor's degree in 1951.
Would you please throw some light into it?

[ALOCHONA] Re: Read what BNP said about Dr. Yunus and Grameen in 1991-2006

Dear Alochoks

What a wonderful display of the Nethrist in action!

He cannot bring himself to accept the jealousies and rotten strategies of his own Nethri. As a typical Nethrist he would rather go to the moon than take an honest look in the mirror. And so, instead of admitting to his own Nethri's vindictive jealousy (as internationally reported) he goes looking for the jealousy of the opposition Nethri! After trawling through the archives he comes up with his evidence. Let us observe the thinking of the Nethrist.

In both the articles the Nethrist has presented there is no mention of Khaleda, nor indeed is there any quote of hers. We have the Nethrist stating that his source told him Khaleda had instructed Saifur Rahman to trash Yunus. This is probably, but not evidently, true. My source tells me that before Hasina's infamous press conference where she lost control of her mouth and trashed Yunus at least three ministers had asked her to avoid the subject and let them deal with Yunus through their ministries. Hasina replied that Yunus had been unsupportive of Mujib back in 1974 and that he deserved punishment for that and that the jonogon wanted her to attack to Yunus. Well, we all saw her performance at that press conference. After the fallout it seems she has decided it is better to keep her mouth shut and to instruct her Ministers to do the dirty work. It seems infact that she may have learned something from Khaleda :) Both ladies are ridiculous.

Returning to the evidence. There is no evidence of jealousy here. There is no name calling. There is no crass sloganeering. There is no obvious vendetta. There is no behind the scenes conspiracy.

What we do have is Saifur Rahman saying that the Government has invested in infrastructure and that Grameen has not :) And of course, his is annoyed that Grameen receives such acclaim abroad. Perhaps if the Government turned itself into an NGO it would be more productive and would be able to translate its values and results to the world - and the people of Bangladesh : ) This AL government is in the same boat but has reacted in a far worse manner.

The Nethrist of AL and the Nethrist of BNP are both educated and honest individuals. But they are basically a type of cretin. They are learned but believe that the grandchild of their Nethri is more fit to rule than their own unborn grandchild. The Nethrist likes to think he is a loyal soldier but he is not. He is after all, incapable of thinking for himself, incapable of dissent, incapable of rebellion, incapable of succession planning and incapable of a manly demeanour. The Nethrist, is in short, as capable of disloyalty as a dog to his master or an infant to his mother.

Nethrists cannot be taught, conditioned or forced into a new political destiny for themselves or their party. Time is the only medicine. For time will see them die off and be replaced by their own free thinking, modern and marvellous children who will always put Bangladesh before any crackpot, tinpot, third rate politician.
