[mukto-mona] 7 Ladies and Girl students held from Press club: It appears there is no human rights in Bangladesh--editorial

If attending a meeting is crime for women, then our women ministers aren't doing the same daily in Bangladesh? Its time to wake up against this autocratic regime of human rights violation.

7 Ladies and Girl students  held from Press club: It appears there is no human rights in Bangladesh

.
. UNB, Dhaka has reported that Police arrested seven members of Islami Chhatri Sangstha, an associate female body of Jamaat-e-Islami, from the National Press Club area on Saturday.Witnesses said police detained them one after another in between 3:30pm and 5pm when they were coming out of the National Press Club after attending a discussion meeting there. The female organization held the programme yesterday as part of its protest against arrest of its 21 leaders and workers, who were arrested by police from its Moghbazar party office recently.Inspector (investigation) of Shahbagh thana Abdul Jalil confirmed the arrest yesterday.
We are surprised at such crude action. The whole nation has condemned the arrest of college and university students from their organizational  head office at Maghbazar. Now it has been reported that Nari Adhikar Andolon ( Women Rights Movement )organized a protest meeting in VIP lounge of  National Press Club against arresting those girls. In the meeting current woman MP, former woman MP and Mrs Chemon Ara, a participant of language movement participated and spoke. We do not find any reason for  arrest of the girls and ladies including Madam Chemon Ara.
Human rights , it seems, no longer exists in Bangladesh . We ask the Government to restrain the Police and Home Minister who appears to be very aggressive against Islamic forces. We ask all patriotic forces to condemn these actions.

[mukto-mona] Reconciliation not a capitulation

Friends,

Here is an articles from my book "Harvest will come" wrote in August
2008. Judge for yourself where we stand after five opportunities lost.

Reconciliation not a capitulation

Taking a long road since my younger years in activism, my ideas have
come full circle. After early idealism and then progressing to
pragmatism, I find my political philosophy akin to early faith in
basic goodness of man and his rightful place on the planet earth. I
have zero tolerance against pessimism. I also find myself fearlessly
siding with the truth with an uncanny sense of justice. I clearly know
the difference between reconciliation and capitulation. There are
crimes which can't be condoned for any rhyme or reason. Principled
leadership pays the price but it rekindles man's mission on this
planet.

I am so committed with Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto's vision for
reconciliation and mending the ways for peace and cooperation between
various parties in Pakistan. More than ever the need for this
cooperation is vital if the nation has to sail through one of the
severe most political storms. But the justice must prevail and the
culprits must be taken to the task. I do not hold any punches when it
comes to setting the record straight. I will be very honest and frank.

If history is any witness, I remain skeptical about the sincerity of
MQM and some of its old artifacts from past dictatorial regimes. MQM
has been a very unreliable friend of representative democracies in
Pakistan. It usually finds its way to power from the top down. But I
will be very happy to be wrong. If MQM is truly sincere about
strengthening of democracy and working with elected representatives of
the people there can't be a bigger blessing than that.

Reserving the right to disagree, one can't deny the fact that MQM
represents a significant number of citizens and it is custodian of
their mandate. Same can also be said about other political parties
including Pakistan Muslim League (Q), and MMA. Obviously during the
recent elections, the people of Pakistan revealed its overwhelming
choice by returning Pakistan People's Party, Pakistan Muslim League,
and Awami National Party to power by defeating a dictator who ruled
Pakistan with an iron fist.

MQM and Muslim League (Q) can't be absolved from their responsibility
of May 12th and October 18th incidents. No one has a right to forgive
deaths of so many innocent and unarmed people who came under open
fire. On October 18th hundreds of peaceful civilians lost their lives
due to security lapses and inexcusable handling of the evidence from
the site of the suicide bombings. A denial by provincial government to
register an FIR in both incidents requires accountability and
explanation.

As claimed by the leadership of both parties if there was no foul play
then they should welcome such a probe to clear all speculations. Both
MQM and Muslim League (Q) leadership should unlock itself from the
prejudices of the present moment and give way to alternative public
point of view. More than accountability, there is a need for removing
cause for distrust between various parties and followers and families
of the victims of those tragedies. Reconciliation shall not be
conditional on the denial of justice to the families of the victims.
The moral governance requires valuing the life of every citizen no
matter how weak and helpless he or she might be. Loss of one innocent
life is morally a high enough ground to subordinate all other
considerations.

Eight years of Musharraf rule and after spending billions of dollars
of foreign aid including $10 billion dollars of American tax payer
money, Pakistan's national security and the economy took a deep dive
overnight. Instead of taking the punches on its chin, PPP government
must bring Musharraf and his allies to the parliament for open trials
and accountability. General Musharraf and his ring of confidants will
also have to explain how Pakistan's precious resources were spent
during the eight years of their unchecked rule.

Democracy should not be confused with weakness. Those who commit
heinous crimes must fear due legal punishment. If this representative
government failed to punish murders and criminals, the hope for
justice and faith in democracy will be lost forever. It is morally and
legally incumbent upon Pakistan government and Pakistani judiciary to
probe into all political assassinations and killings including that of
Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto, Murtaza Bhutto, Nawab Akbar Khan Bugti and
many others. Pakistani government must continue pushing for UN probe
into the assassination of Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto.

Let the chips fall where they may.

Re: [mukto-mona] Questions of God and Eternity

I initiated it by saying that, being influenced by his faith, Newton saw seven colors in the spectrum in place of six, and the scientific community stuck to it.  I cited the example to show how faith influences science to a remarkable extent.

Reflecting telescope is irrelevant as a prism was used to disperse the components of sunlight.  You really have an appreciable ability to mix up things.

My statement was: Newton built the first reflecting telescope. The statement is still valid.
I will still stick to my conclusion. Creative geniuses like Kalidas,
Newton, Ramanujan, and Jagadish Bose were believers, but their achievements had nothing to do with gods or goddesses.

As usual you are wrong.  Telescope was invented by Galileo, and not Newton.  He decomposed sunlight by passing a beam of it through a prism, and not through a telescope.  Read basic physics again before you write something on it, Mr. Chakrabarty.

For Kalidas, about whose life little is known, it is very likely that his wife, Vidyadharee, came looking for him after she kicked him out of her bed.  He was found sitting on a stone besides the river Ksipra and contemplating suicide,  He misidentified her as the Goddess of learning, which in his days was named Kali/Saraswati.  In the mean time, one shock had opened his poetic nerve in the brain.  However, in the middle of a dark night, only her breasts were visible by the light emitted from her necklace, and he composed, "..Kuchajuga shovita muktahare"

Jagadish
Bose wrote an article in 1894 blending science with mythology. In his childhood he asked the Ganges, "River, where are you coming from?" He heard the voice of the Ganges, "From the jataa (interwoven hair) of Mahadev." At the age of 36, he asked the same question and he still heard the same distinct voice of the river Ganges, "Mahadever jataa hoite." There is no reason to believe that his scientific mind really heard the voice. Kalidas believed that it was the goddess Saraswati who made him write all the beautiful verses. The other day we read an article on the Indian mathematician Ramanujan who believed that all the theorems were revealed to him in dream from a god or goddess. Newton was a religious man. But his scientific works were not based on any faith. This is true for Jagadish Bose, Ramanujan, and all other scientists and mathematicians and even this is true for all the prophets or sages to whom knowledge was revealed. All the creations by humans were the result of sweat shed by them. There was nothing divine about them. Newton had to invent a telescope, for example, to study the nature of light.

One example of how faith influences science is the spectrum of sunlight as described by Sir Isaac Newton.  Nobody with common sense would find a difference between Blue and Indigo, but Newton did.  I suppose, he was deeply influenced by his heretic faith of Christian faith called Arian heresy.  He believed in the existence of seven heavens in which seven archangels sang religious songs, and probably as the light emitted by them reached the surface of earth, it became white(or colorless).  Religion is primitive science based mainly on cosmology and herbal therapy.  Mesopotamian civilization, in spite of being an advanced one compared to that of the Egyptians, did not need an afterlife and God(s) who would behave like a tyrant king, but the Egyptians needed such a creation of the priest king named Menes.

I believe you misread my comments. What I said is - how scientific assumptions can cross over to faith. Let me give you an example, some scientists believe in the man-made global warming theory, and when data did not support their belief, they manipulated data to stick to their belief. That's how science crosses over to faith.

Now, what is eternity? It's a big unknown, isn't it? Anytime you face an unknown, you are apprehensive about it, that's what I call a fear of the unknown. As you board a plane, you are apprehensive about what's lying ahead. This is a natural psychological response. Eternity is one such unknown. It is quite natural to wonder about the eternity. As we approach it - we get apprehensive about it. It's a fact. Isn't it? What's unscientific about the fear of eternity? I don't get it. Why are you thinking about punishment or reward? I am not talking about it?  I am talking about psychological response to the eternity, which is natural, if not scientific. Isn't it?

I think - you are trying to establish something that you already believe in, which I call faith-based discussion. Under this situation, you will not conceive alternative argument.

It may not be proper to use faith in the context of science. Science uses assumption, axiom, postulate, and hypothesis. But all of these are not wild guesses or imaginations. It is true that no formal proofs are offered, but they can be obvious and theories bases on these can have prediction capabilities. It follows the so called scientific method.
Eternity of human life can be a philosophical proposition not a scientific one. So if you say that you have fear of eternity, then you are saying this on the basis of faith. Fear, right path, etc. cannot be scientific constructs, they can well fit into a religion--Godless or without God. Right path is a relative term and can be an important topic in ethics and moral philosophy.
You have decided on your right path and as a matter of fact we all do. These are obviously important for an individual and the society he belongs to, but this is beyond the jurisdiction of science.

Assumption becomes faith when it is considered as truth, without any evidence. Scientists often assume (hypothesize) something, then investigate about its validity or truth. If they fail to validate, and yet believe in it, that becomes a faith.

There is another kind of assumption, in which a model is assumed which helps explain some unknown phenomena. If someone thinks that the model is the truth, and asks others to accept it - it becomes his faith. God and eternity are such phenomenological models to explain some unknowns. A scientist can assume these concepts if they help him understand those unknowns. Models can be physical structures or mathematical expressions. Therefore, if models have physical structures, they can be understood in a physical sense, as the concept of Gods and Goddesses in idols.

Fear of eternity/unknown is always with us. Such fears keep us in line. Some people can easily overcome fear of eternity or unknown, and can do certain things that most others can't imagine.

Fear of Unknown eternity? My humble question: Can a scientist believe in eternity in the physical sense? What is this fear about? Is it about any punishment that you may have to face? If this is so, then what are the remedies? Good works? Don't all these boil down to a concept of faith?  Sent from my iPhone

I don't know if my belief in God is circumstantial or what; it could be due to the fear of unknown eternity also. But, one thing I know for sure – I have no fear of God, if you are asking about that. I try to do everything right; that's all. Some people believe in almighty God, yet always claim to be victims of aggression from others.

Anyway, I don't dwell on the existence of God or its form, because I find the concept as a very powerful psychological sanctuary. The existence of God is less important when it's a conceptual entity. So, I leave it alone, and do not feel the need to abandon the idea of God. Instead, I feel strongly that - we should abandon the concept of religion altogether, which is nothing but exploitation of the image of God to serve the petty interests of religion-peddlers on this earth.

It's also not about which scientist believes in what; they are as clueless about God as any one of us. It's really a matter of personal choice. Many people do not need the concept of God, that's fine - as long as they do the right things.

Re: [mukto-mona] Saudi love of 2-nation theory of Partition of India

Muslim Ummah theory only will benefit Saudi Arabia, not individual Muslim in any way. It will keep Muslims individuals aloof from other world communities, and limit their access to the success and progress otherwise they could have achieved all by themselves. I do not know if Saudis ever provided any tangible positive contribution towards prospect and prosperity of the Muslim society around the world, except promoting religious views to segregate them from the rest of the world-communities. So, I am not surprised that they will support two nation theory.

This is a short news about Saudi Arabia's Dr. Ali Al Ghamdi and his love of Pakistan. He even speaks a little Urdu! The most significant point here is the Saudi view of Pakistan as the beacon of the Muslim Ummah and the glorification of 2-nation theory of Indo-Pak subcontinent. Automatically, that means a permanent hatred of Bangladesh -- the enemy that struck asunder the dream of a Muslim nationhood in the midst of Hinduland! This, in other words, is a very very BAD news for Bangladesh and the on-going trials of 1971 War Crimes in Dhaka.
The strong Saudi pressure will bend any US willingness to cooperate with the proceedings of the Trial, and the double-weighted clout is sure to wield influence among the Islamic-minded members of the BD Govt.

[mukto-mona] Saudi love of 2-nation theory of Partition of India
