Mr. SD,
Shukla Di is the headmaster of the school funded by me and her brother Shisir. She is spending her time by spreading the light of education to underprivileged rural community. She can walk anytime of the day and night without any fear. Villagers will give their lives for her.

As far as I know, Hindus do not want to live like protected species in Bangladesh. The numbers of minorities are dwindling gradually since 1947. There was little flicker of hope at the onset of independence in 1971 but that vanished very soon with more Islamisation of the country. Many of my Hindu friends left without saying formal good byes. Many them were tormented and killed during the 1971 war and then they experienced the very same treatment in 2001 and nobody got punished for those violent crimes. Maybe, your town and village were generous to minority Hindus but those days are just gone, my friend. Next time you visit your Shukla didi, please ask her a simple question whether she feels safer in Bangladesh? Please demand a truthful answer from her and assure her that you would not be offended by her truthful answer. I know you are good man but you should not be a naive person in this critical time. Bangladeshi Hindu minority would be basically a history unless they fight back for their citizenry rights. Who knows whether that would be enough? Thank you.

I lived 26 years of my early life in Bangladesh. I have not seen Hindu people are tortured in there. We had neighbor who were Hindu. I grew up with them. They are my rakhee sisters. My father arrange marriage for their sons and daughters. Kaka babu died and my dead tool care of all their family. They are our relatives.  We attended their poojas and they came to our Eid. When I read in this website I see so many things are written by some member which I have never came across. When I visit BD, I can come without visiting and eating from my Shukla didi' house.

How do we justify Modi's instruction to the police officer:

As for India's leaders influencing what goes on in Bangladesh, Modi could not be effective in secularizing Bangladesh; because he does not have a secular credential. However, talking theoretically, if India had no-nonsense secular people running the country, Bangladesh would have felt a lot more pressure to get its acts together; Bangladeshi Hindus would not have been going to India because of being victims of Muslim hatred and atrocities at their homeland of centuries.

"Did Modi call that a "National Shame", Dr. Roy?"

My comment was not against Sen's remark about Modi, Dr. Bain. I said that - he has the right to do so.
My comment was, rather, on the subject of returning the Bharat Ratna medal and the tile to Vajpayee. This award has nothing to do with Modi.

Indian people know better who should be their Prime Minister. I am not in tune with their situations.
Whether Modi or someone else becomes the PM, things will not change much for Bangladesh. In fact, 2001 carnage on Hindus in Bangladesh happened during the BJP rule in India; India did not come forward to save the religious minorities in Bangladesh. So, what could be different if they come to power again? That's why - I don't care who becomes the PM.

As for our relatives in India, I am sure - nothing will change for them during another BJP tenure. They have been there before.

Thanks.

Looks like Dr. Roy has missed the justification that I have provided in the last post below as to why "I also think that it was OK for Professor Sen to say that he would return it if Atal Bihari Vajpayee asked it back." Clearly, Dr. Roy has failed to think what he was talking about below about Narendra Modi. Professor Sen was not allergic to the award from Prime Minister Vajpayee, who was respectable enough to term the Gujarat Riots a "National Shame." Did Modi call that a "National Shame", Dr. Roy? Did Modi as the Chief Minister of Gujarat take the responsibility of the failure of his administration to stop the riots? Never mind who started it and how many were killed from what religious community, it was Modi's job to provide safety and security for all citizens of Gujarat.

As for the sorry state of affairs in Bangladesh, I agree with Dr. Roy.

As for India, while I am not a voter there, I do care about what kind of people leads that country. In spite of Dr. Roy's statement below, I have no doubt that he also cares about what kind of people leads India. Both he and I have too many friends and relatives in India, both of us know that the leaders of India can influence what happens in Bangladesh, our beloved motherland. Obviously, we probably have some differences in philosophies, and what the two of us want India to be might be somewhat different.

"I also think that it was OK for Professor Sen to say that he would return it if Atal Bihari Vajpayee asked it back."

May I know what the justification behind this comment is?
Let me ask you also - why didn't he decline to receive the medal and the title from Atal Bihari Vajpei if he was so allergic to this award?

As I said before, not supporting Modi is his legitimate right. But, being an academician and a Nobel Laureate, he should know better. The riot in Gujrat was the result of a statewide spontaneous mob outbreak from both sides, which resulted 31,000 arrests throughout the state, 80% were Hindus. Total 140 killed in Police firing, 80 of them were Hindus. In the first 3 days 100 were killed, 70 were Hindus. Let's remember, Indian communal riots are never one-sided. Prime Minister termed this disaster as a "National Shame." One BJP State Minister of Modi government has been hanged recently. Do you still think Modi and Indian government did not do enough? I believe - Modi is a victim of propaganda. Modi is banned from entry to USA as a result of propaganda campaign. Some people even compared him as Golam Azam of India. So on and so forth …

Educated people should not get carried away by prop

Mr. Das,
When I typed the response from my iphone, I didn't get chance to see the spelling errors. Because it sometimes picks words from the memory what you don't want to type. I also didn't have my reading glasses. As you know after I hit 40, my hands are not long enough any more. If you use iphone, you should know that. I couldn't resist myself but writing a hasty response. Because my experience is completely different from you guys. I am sorry for the unintentional grammatical and spelling errors. Thank God, I was not taking the English 2nd paper exam in BD. You look like love to bully people a lot. I saw your rude response to Mr. QR. I am sorry to say that my work involves talking to English speaking people whole day. I speak to each patient at least 20 to 30 minutes and I see at least 20 patients in a day.
Let me tell you I saw my father cried like a baby when he lost his childhood  friend our neighbor Roy Bahadur who was our Kaka Babu. When Kaka Babu died, my father took care of his whole family. My Dad made sure I bring Shisir to USA.  Shisir was the youngest son of Kaka Babu. He stayed with me and finished his MBA and now working in a big corporation. Most of the people around us, think we are real brothers. Madhuri, Shisir's wife cooked all Bengali traditional food for us during this Eid.
I don't want to write too much. Because Mr. Das (English teacher) will find grammatical and linguistic errors!!!

it does not show communal tension properly, it also has about half a
dozen spelling and grammar faults.

Re: [mukto-mona] Religion, Atheism and Secularism ISP II August 2013

Seems reasonable. All religions capitalise on the ignorance, insecurities and fear of the future of human beings. As material wealth increases due to increase in knowledge and wealth creating skills the need for dependence on gods shifts to dependence on acquired skills. Religions seek to stiffle all secular knowledge and impose only god's word as interpreted by the preasts / imams / rabbis etc. Dvr Rao

Religion, Atheism and Secularism

Ram Puniyani

Last three decades have seen an unprecedented presence of religion in social and political space. Somewhere the acts of terror, somewhere communal violence and somewhere the political influence of religious right on society and political processes, all these phenomenon have overshadowed the deeper inequities in the society, the aspirations of people for dignity and rights amongst others. Now comes a book which predicts that religions will become a minority vis a vis the practice of secularism in the decade of 2040s. The book is "Why Atheism will replace religion: The triumph of earthly pleasures over pie in the sky" written by Nigel Barber. This book relates the rise/fall of the religion with economic power and makes an observation that atheists are much more in developed countries.

The book is based on the study of 137 nations conducted by the author and concludes that in the countries; more developed the welfare system; higher is the number of atheists. The book's crunch line is, in countries where distribution of income is even, lesser is the number of religious people. The author is a prominent psychologist. He makes a prediction that people will feel lesser need of supernatural beliefs when the tangible world is providing them for their real needs. Also in a survey conducted in America 20% people identified themselves as Atheists.

There is some terminological confusion here to begin with, while the study is a very reasoned one, and links the lack of security with the belief in god and practice of religiosity. Surely many a religions themselves have atheism as a component of their structure. Some streams of Hinduism like Charvak deny the existence of God. Jainism and Buddhism also do not talk of a supernatural power, but it's another matter that followers of these religions converted the prophets of these religions themselves as Gods and are worshipping them. In the broad umbrella of Hinduism there are many traditions, Brahminism, Nath, Taantra, Bhakti, Siddh etc. In Hinduism itself the concept of God is also very diverse, from the polytheism with multiple Gods and Goddesses, tri-theism (Brahma Vishnu Mahesh) to the single God; Ishwar and then to the concept of formless power all these concepts are coexisting together merrily today.

In India thee atheist tradition starting from Charvak, in present times it found a strong articulation amongst communists the epitome of which has been Bhagat Singh with his famous tract, 'Why I am an Athiest'. Also radical social reformers like Periyar Ramsamy Naicker gave the atheist movement a powerful lift. The rationalists association is nurturing the same to a great extent.

Other religions, where there is a single God, the concept of God keeps varying between the God with form and body to the formless power. Many decades ago a plethora of books debated about the existence of God. But last three decades in particular have seen a very different phenomenon i.e. gross abuse of religions' identity by the political forces of status quo. Earlier to this, one saw in the beginning of 20th century, in the decade of 1920s, Christian Fundamentalism was a response of the conservative sections of society to the process of social change brought about by the process of industrialization and education due to which Africa-Americans and women started coming to social space. Islamic fundamentalism makes a political appearance with the regime of Ayatollah Khomeini in Iran. Here it was the politics related to oil and the high handed politics of Western powers which foiled the popular revolution and brought in a cleric as the head of the state. It was during this period that conservative versions of Islam were promoted by some of the rulers who were scared of popular urges for democracy. Salafi version of Islam is one such which was used in Saudi Arabia to keep a tight leash over the popular aspirations so that the Saudi oil can keep flowing in to the tankers of oil companies controlled by US-UK giants.

It is the same Salafi version of Islam which was brought in to the service of US hegemonic interest to control the oil in the region.  This version was taught in the Madrassas in Pakistan. These Madrassas were set up with US instigation, money and syllabus, through which the Mujahedeen, Taliban Al Qaeda emerged and played into the hands of US designs of throwing away Soviet army from Afghanistan. In India, the insecurity of the section of middle classes in the face of rising presence of dalits and women in social space in the decade of 1980s led to the political abuse of religion's identity by BJP when it took up the issue of Ram temple.

While the author of the book is talking about the release of the hold of religiosity and God with rising affluence, today sitting in South Asia the scenario seems to be the other way around. In Pakistan the hold of Mullahs on the social affairs is a big obstacle to the firm rooting of democracy there. In Sri Lanka again thousands of Tamils were butchered while attacking LTTE, lately one is seeing an attack on Christians and Muslims there. Not to be left behind, in Myanmar, the retrograde political forces are attacking poor Rohingya Muslims in the name of Buddhism.

One must add that there is no contradiction between secularism and religion. The author of this book is not clear on this. With secularization process, the role of clergy was relegated to the private sphere of society but religion as such was there. God was there. It's now that with prosperity going above the critical levels that more people are feeling less need to call upon God to help them live a secure life.  In South Asian countries a complex process had been witnessed all through. While people with great amount of religiosity and belief in God like Mahatma Gandhi and Mualan Abul Kalam Azad stood for secular state, the non practicing Muslim like Jinnah led the movement for a state in the name of Islam and an atheist Savarkar, was the ideologue of Hindu nation. Many a leaders of Hindu national politics may not be so religious but in the political arena, they create mass hysteria in the name of religion and God.

One wishes to agree with the authors' prediction. Hope it is not restricted just to Western countries. What is more important is to realize is that mass spectacles of religiosity are an expression of deeper social insecurities, which are being cashed in by the politicians of 'status quo', who are deliberately using this religious identity to ensure that social distribution of resources to weaker sections is stalled. Today in India one can see a clear cut battle between those who stand for social welfare, and struggle to bring in measures go in that direction on one side. On the other are those political forces that resort to polarize the communities along religious lines, around identity issues. The latter have a social base amongst the socially insecure middle classes and the backing of section of big corporate houses. Seeing the pains of this battle between two paths, one turns pessimistic at times whether if at all, South Asia can get over the imposition of God-Religion in political arena and focus on improving prosperity with equitable distribution in society. In many a propaganda-claims being made for 'development' the factor of equitable growth is missing and that's where the real definition of development lies. The bluff of development by communal forces has to be countered and the emphasis on the growth with concern for equity, affirmative action for the victim religious minorities and dalits-adivasis is the core around which the battle against the blind religiosity and assertions of politics in the name of religion has to be taken forward.

Western countries though far from the ideal in prosperity and growth, at least do not have the baggage of politics of religion's identity in such a strong way as is prevalent in 'post-colonial' states; that is dogging South, West Asia in particular. This book gives the hope as far as prosperity and equity is concerned one hopes that this applies to the troubled countries where abuse of religion's identity is playing havoc with the concept of human rights and survival of large sections of society.

Aboriginal, indigenous, or tribal? Does it really matter? I am sure there are legal implications of how a group is classified and the legal implications dictate privileges. Even if all the data provided here are authentic, the fact of the matter remains that these people have been living in the Chittagong Hill Tracts for centuries. They did not want to be a part of Pakistan which aspiration was frustrated by Radcliffe Boundary Commission. Although the state of Pakistan was not respectful to their happy existence, almost half of them were not sure how to respond to the call for liberation of Bangladesh from Pakistan. Their hesitation probably was not liked by even the father of the Nation Sheikh Mujib. 1972 constitution did not explicitly recognize their needs as tribal people or aborigines. They resorted to armed struggle and got some support from India at some stage. We also have seen the brutality with which Zia tried to suppressed them. Settlement of people from the plains was a notorious act that Zia engaged in. Major General Manzoor (suspected to be killer of Zia and himself killed while on the run) voiced Zia's political conviction as the general-in-charge of the CHT: we do not need you, we need the land. BNP was against the peace accord which however could be signed by Hasina. Is it being implemented fully? I don't think so.

The force with which this article has been written poses a danger. If these people are foreigners, should the people of Bangladesh engage in a "bideshi khedao" movement? This movement is popular in Assam and Myanmar.

Subject: [mukto-mona]

(P. 3 : Webster' New World Dictionary : Basic School Edition : 1983)। (C. R. Chakma : The Chakma Nation in the Evolution of Age (Middle Age), Liluya, Hawra, West Bengal : India, 1988, p.
