'Problems attributed to Islam may not really be Islamic'

Mustafa Akyol

Some of the current problems seen among Muslims are assumed to be the product of Islam, but according to a writer who has just written a book on the subject, this is not correct.

"For example, they look at some violent Muslims and their acts, and think that since there is an idea of jihad in Islam, that's the outcome. But the reason why those extremists commit those acts is not because of something written in a medieval text but because they are angry at something in the modern world," Mustafa Akyol told us for this week's Monday Talk.

"In a similar sense, we just had a Norwegian terrorist who referred to the Christian Crusades to justify a horrible terrorist act. In other words, the problem is not that there is the historical legacy of the Crusades, but that we have a fascist deeply annoyed by something in today's society," he added.
'Islam considers extramarital sex a sin and holds men and women equally responsible. But I've never seen a man killed for honor; it's always young girls. Behind it is a patriarchal notion of honor. So one of the things I wanted to do in my book is explain what is historical, what is traditional and what is divinely mandated'
According to Akyol, author of the newly published "Islam without Extremes: A Muslim Case for Liberty," concerns about Islamist violence and extremism should focus on politics rather than religion.

Through our questions, Akyol elaborated on his ideas.

How did you decide on the name of your book, "Islam without Extremes"?
Actually, the name that I had originally chosen for my book, "A Muslim Case for Liberty," is now the subtitle. The publisher suggested something shorter: "Islam without Extremes." I actually didn't like it at first but then it made sense because I speak of two different extremes in the modern Muslim world: secular authoritarianism versus Islamic authoritarianism. In one of the chapters of the book I show how secular authoritarianism in the Middle East created its Islamic counterparts. The suppression of Islamic practices by Reza Shah in Iran, and the Islamic reaction which culminated in the Iranian Revolution is a stark example. But I believe there is a third way, and I call this Muslim liberalism.

Why did you write the book in English?
Well, first because it's the global language. Secondly, the things that I talk about in the book are relevant not just to Turks, but the Muslim world, and actually the whole world. There is a big discussion in the West right now about Islam, and it's a discussion manipulated by people who are biased against Islam. This book is a way to challenge those people, to show that there is a history of democracy and liberty in the Muslim world, and it is also an effort to show more conservative Muslims that some of their illiberal attitudes might actually change because those attitudes come not from the core of Islam but its historical interpretations.

Is your book going to be translated and/or released in other countries?
There will be a UK edition soon, and then a Turkish edition. I hope there will be editions in Arabic and the European languages, especially in France and Germany, where there is a heated discussion about the nature of Islam; and this book will show Islamophobic writers there how and why they are mistaken.

Why do you feel those writers you just mentioned are not justified?
Because they look at some current problems among Muslims and presume that all of those problems are a product of Islam as a religion. For example, they look at some violent Muslims and their actions, and think that since there is an idea of jihad in Islam, that's the outcome. But the reason why those extremists commit those acts is not because of something written in a medieval text but because they are angry at something in the modern world. In a similar case, we just had a Norwegian terrorist who referred to the Christian Crusades to justify a horrible terrorist act. In other words, the problem is not that there is the historical legacy of the Crusades, but that he was a fascist, deeply annoyed by something in today's society. Therefore, concerns on Islamist violence and extremism should focus on politics rather than religion. Secondly, there are troubles in the Muslim world, like honor killings, which are not Islamic. You see similar things in non-Muslim communities of the Middle East as well, like female genital mutilation. It is something to denounce but not a problem with Islam. Some things are just bad traditions that need to be abandoned.

'Religion is more positively viewed when society is civil'

There are also impressions that Islamic society is male-dominated.
Yes. Islam, for example, considers extramarital sex a sin and holds men and women equally responsible. But I've never seen a man killed for honor; it's always young girls. Behind it is a patriarchal notion of honor. So one of the things I wanted to do in my book is explain what is historical, what is traditional and what is divinely mandated. What is attributed to Islam may not really be Islamic.

Do you think readers will be convinced by a Turkish author who deals with the issue intellectually and not as an Islamic scholar?
I am not a scholar and I don't need to be a scholar. I am simply a Muslim concerned for his religion. I hold being Muslim not only as a cultural identity but as a theological definition of who I am. It's no wonder this book starts with my personal stories about how I face different aspects of Islam, how they have influenced me and how they created questions in my mind. Actually, being a Turk is helpful in this case because Turkey is a place where you have the most interesting synthesis in the clash between Islam and modernity. We have a deeply pious segment in our society along with a passionately secular one. Their interaction sometimes leads to clashes but sometimes to dialogue. Therefore, we can speak about what I call in my book the "freedom to sin" in Turkey; for it is a valid question here. Maybe it's not a question in the tribal regions of Afghanistan and Pakistan. That's why one of my chapters in the book shows how changes are taking place within Turkey's Islamic culture and what the arguments for change are.

You argue that liberalism can be justified under Islam. Would you tell us how?
Some people think that a liberal is someone who doesn't recognize any limit to his or her desires. But I understand liberalism merely as a political and economic doctrine. It's about what the state can tell us. I can limit my desires, of course. For example, I fast during Ramadan, but that's my choice. But should the state interfere in people's lives? Should the state educate us according to an official ideology? A classical liberal would say that the less the state interferes in our lives the better, and I believe that this view is compatible with Islam.

You also argue that Muslims are better off in a secular state. Why is that?
If you create an Islamic state, it actually becomes a state that imposes your Islam. There are states that claim to be Islamic -- Saudi Arabia, Iran, Sudan or political or armed groups that claim to be Islamic such as the Taliban in Afghanistan -- but they are all very different from each other. The Islamic Republic of Iran imposes Shiite Islam; the Saudi kingdom imposes Wahhabi Islam. So what they actually do is claim ownership of Islam. However, in my view, nobody since the Prophet Muhammad has the exclusive right to say, "This is the right Islam." There is also a modern problem here. Traditionally, if you look at the Middle Ages, you'd have Muslim states in which people could follow different schools of thought. In modern times, though, the state extensively interferes in our lives; it creates schools, it has anthems, it has a police force, and it writes the law of the land. If this modern state imposes Islam of any kind, it will be oppressive. In Saudi Arabia, for example, the Shiites, who are Muslims that do not accept the Wahhabi interpretation, are oppressed. That's why a neutral state that does not impose Islam of any form or any other belief is important. So, I opt for a secular state, but not like the Turkish secularist state, which both imposes a certain form of Islam and oppresses the practice of Islam. Religion is much better off under a liberal secular state and within civil society.

'Old texts can be reinterpreted by modern eyes'

You make several references in your book to verses in the Quran. What do you do to avoid criticisms over the different interpretations of the Quran?
It is universally accepted that the Quran was originally written in Arabic and that you cannot replace the Arabic verses, but it is also agreed that the meaning can be translated into different languages. When I use translations from Arabic, I check various sources. In other words, I do not claim to be an interpreter of the Quran; I just want to relate some little-noticed verses to the modern situations that Muslims face. For example, there is a verse in the Quran that tells people not to sit with others who make a mockery of God's verses. That's a very important verse that tells Muslims how they should respond when someone makes fun of their religion. It simply says not to sit with them. It doesn't say attack them, and it doesn't say go and kill them. There are other verses in the Quran that might be overlooked by today's Muslims.

Where do you think Islamophobia came from? Does it have any relation to some of the verses in the Quran?
There are verses in the Quran about wars that the Prophet Muhammad fought with the pagans of Mecca. Some of those verses call Muslims to fight for God. But how Muslims understand those verses today is the key question. If you look at the Old Testament, you will see that some passages are much more aggressive when you compare them with those in the Quran. The Book of Joshua is especially militant regarding how believers should fight their enemies. There have been radical settlers in the West Bank who took the Book of Joshua literally, and one of them massacred Arabs praying in a mosque in 1994.
In other words, there might be an idea of war in your scripture, but the question is: Do you look at the modern world and bring back militancy or do you understand that there are other ways in the modern world, like diplomacy and dialogue, to solve your problems? I believe it is possible to reinterpret the ancient texts in the light of the modern age.

Can such a reinterpretation be accepted in Islam?
Of course, there is the tradition of "tajdid/tecdid," which means renewal in English. I don't claim to be someone capable of tajdid/tecdid, but I am showing the need for it. For example, I show that some of the themes in Islamic tradition are actually historical. In the medieval world, there was no UN, no democracy, no rule of law. So territories run by non-Muslims would be dangerous for Muslims, leading to the notion of the "House of War." But today, Muslims who live in the West rather than Islamic lands are sometimes better off. They sometimes find more religious freedom in the US or in Europe. So, apparently, the medieval division between the House of War and the House of Islam doesn't make sense today.

'Fanaticism and violence can emerge in any community'

There appear to be some European Christians who see the world in terms of those divisions. When you heard of the terrorist attack in Norway, were you reminded of those concepts?
In the first 24 hours, it was not clear who committed the massacre in Norway. Then there were reports saying that it might be an al-Qaeda job. I guess the media took it as granted that the culprit must be an Islamist organization. It was surprising to many people to see that the terrorist was not a Muslim but rather someone who hates Islam and multiculturalism in Europe. That was an important lesson on the extremism, fanaticism and violence that can emerge in any community. American political theorist Benjamin R. Barber, whom I quote in the book, reminds us that "fundamentalism is a product of a culture under siege." When people feel that their culture is under siege, they sometimes respond badly. This happens to Muslims when they are ghettoized and insulted by some outsiders. Apparently this fanatic in Norway thought that European culture is threatened by the presence of Muslims in Europe, as many hate groups so argue, and he made a decision to kill innocent people. This will be a lesson to Westerners showing that extremism can emerge within their own culture as well, and not just Muslim cultures.

In his manifesto he uses the pronoun "we" several times and also refers to the Knights Templar. Do you think that shows he is part of an organization?
The Knights Templar is a historic legend that various people refer to, ranging from unorthodox Christians to freemasons. The Knights Templar was a military order in the crusader armies of the Middle Ages. They were ultimately prosecuted by the pope for being heretical, and they became a legend. I don't think there is a real Templar organization today, apart from some trivial groups that like the legend.

Do his attacks sound an alarm for Europe?
They do. They show them that the trouble in Europe is not just about the integration of Muslim communities in Europe but that there is also a problem with xenophobia in Europe. We have seen what fascism had done in Europe before and during World War II. I don't expect another Holocaust in Europe, but there are still Nazi-minded people when it comes to how they see the "Semites" -- this time Semites being Arabs and other Muslims.

'Hate rhetoric can have terrible consequences'

Oslo massacre perpetrator Breivik followed the works of Robert Spencer, Serge Trifkovic and others. What does this tell us?
Breivik is apparently a keen follower of Jihad Watch, a website by Robert Spencer, who calls Islam "the world's most intolerant religion." Several times I had online debates with Spencer, and told him that he misrepresents Islam by cherry-picking all the disturbing themes in it. Then he accused me of being an apologist, someone who deceives the West by trying to show that Islam is actually nice. It is funny that he now says his ideas have been taken out of context by an extremist; it's the same thing Islamists have said in the face of terrorist acts inspired by their works. People like Spencer should understand that their bigoted writings, which sometimes come close to hate speech, can have terrible consequences. When it comes to Trifkovic, one of Breivik's ideological mentors, he is a Serb ultranationalist who used to be a propagandist for the Milosevic movement.

'Case of Turkey important for Muslim world'

What are your thoughts on the idea that the Arab Spring receiving its inspiration from Turkey?
Turkey's success is due to democracy rather than state-imposed, strict secularism. In my book, I show how democracy allowed Turkey's pious Muslims to enter the political system, and be transformed thanks to the political process. I also show how Turkey has become a source of inspiration for Muslims around the world. The Arab Spring made that even clearer. Many people in the West feared that the masses of the Arab Spring would yearn for Islamic regimes, but rather they wanted to achieve democratic systems, and the Islamic parties in Tunis and Egypt used the Justice and Development Party (AK Party) as their example.

The secular establishment in Turkey has long been suspicious of the AK Party regarding whether it would bring Shariah rule to the country. Do you think those fears have subsided?
In Turkey, if you take Islam too seriously, they call you an Islamist. But in the real sense of the term, which describes having an agenda for an Islamic state, the AK Party is not Islamist. It just wants to redefine secularism in Turkey, to make it more democratic and religion-friendly. Other criticisms against the AK Party -- the prime minister's tone, nepotism within the party, etc. -- are more valid, but we should also note that these are problems with Turkish politics in general. That's why I once wrote that "the AK Party is not too Islamic; it is too Turkish."

Mr. Akhter,

Honor killing is a cultural practice. Not only some misguided Muslims take part in it many non-Muslims in the region also participate in it. just because some clueless guy says it is "Islamic", I do not buy it. I looked into it and it is NOT allowed in Islam. Taking law in our own hands is not supported by Islam.

I request you to learn some basic facts of Islam before you wish to place yourself against it or for it.

Peace.

Re: [mukto-mona] Shubash Bose and Jawherlal and Sharmila Bose's research---an analytical article by Ibn Golam Samad

I agree with a lot with the article below. However I can never blame India for "Breaking" Pakistan. It was faults of Pakistani leaders and greed of some Bengali leaders. Mostly Pakistani policies if I have to be specific. India only took advantage of the situation (Largely making of Pakistanis).

Netaji Shubash Bose always been one of my favorite leaders. We do not have to accept everything  Sharmila Bose says but we have to look deep into our narrative  of that era. It will make our history more credible. Over the years it was clear to us that, India acted (Delhi) in her own interest. Only people of Tripura, west bengal, Assam opened their hearts and doors for us but the central government was as bad to Bengali population as they are today to people of west Bengal.

Recent visit of Indian PM shown us how little care they have taken with a sensitive issue like Tista water treaty. Did they ever CLEARLY discussed the issue with Mamata? Or they thought she will just roll over to whatever the central government says? This reminds me a lot about how Bengal was treated by the then west Pakistanis.

Peace.

Anatomy of Violence; Analysis of Civil War in East Pakistan in
