A member of the United People's Democratic Front and another Jumma youth have been arrested in Kudukchari bazaar in Rangamati district.

UPDF activist Santosh Chakma (19) s/o Gyana Prakash Chakma of village Shiallyapara under Burighat Union and Goanta Chakma (20) s/o Tara Mohan Chakma of Ghilachari village in Naniachar Thana were arrested by a group of army personnel from Kudukchari camp at around 9:30 a.m. on 6 April.

The Jummas were shopping at the market when the arrest was made as the day was weekly market day. No reason was cited for the arrest.

Local Union Council chairman, members and the caretaker of the market (Bazaar Chowdhury) rushed to the army camp to plead for their release. But the army told them that the arrested had been sent up.

After making the arrest, the army also searched the shop of Kanon Chakma at Aabashik area, 3 miles south of Kuduchari bazaar on Khagrachari-Rangamati road. However, nothing incriminating was found during the hour-long search.

[mukto-mona] Islamist terrorists must be dealt with iron hand

Diehard extremist, bigot reactionary anti Bangladesh, anti humanity, anti Islam, anti independence fanatic forces of darkness took the street after hijacking national mosque a place of worship on Thursday April 10th 2008.

Jamaat-e_Islami supported internationally affiliated terrorist outfit Khelafat Majlish and Islami Shashontantra Andolan recently formed the Anti-Quran Law Resistance Committee to protest against the National Women Development Policy approved by the advisers' council recently. These groups constantly trying to achieve their political goal by giving counterfeit interpretation of Quran and Sunnah of our prophet (PBOH).

Before the clash, the so-called Anti-Quran Law Resistance Committee held a rally on the mosque ground where they demanded resignation of Rasheda K Chowdhury, adviser to the caretaker government. Hundreds of devotees, infants, women and bystanders got injured by pallet throwing terrorists mullahs.

Terming the National Women Development Policy an anti-Islamic law, they threatened the government of toppling it if it did not amend the policy.

Pro fundamentalist Islami Oikko Jote mafia gangster Fazlul Haque Amini should be arrested immediately and all extremist outfits must be dealt with iron hand.

Terrorist Islamist forces in Bangladesh hijacked the house of worship Baitul Mukarrom the national mosque to attain their political score.  Government must act quickly to clear up the mosque, arrest all Isalmist terrorist outfits occupying the house of God, and return the mosque to its devote worshippers.

These uneducated unqualified mullahs' ruined our society not only in Bangladesh but everywhere in the world. They have learned no language other than violence. In the name of Islam and Quran, they blow up human to defame Islam in the eyes of humanity.

Most of the madrasa's in Bangladesh and elsewhere produces nothing but terrorist. It is hard to find peace loving true Muslim coming out of any madrasa.

I wish someday our nation got a great leader like Mustafa Kamal Ataturk of Turkey who will bundle up all the illiterate mullahs and drown them in the middle of Bay of Bengal to rescue the Muslim Ummah from obliteration.

In nearly every instance, these Mullahs's has hair thin divergence to what Osama Bin Laden is to the world. Laden who is nothing but a terrorist who will be burn to hell for infinite for his role against Ashraful Makhluqat (the best of creation) and attempting to defame and destroy Islam

Carefully watch these mullahs life style and you will understand how far they are from the teaching of Prophet Hazrat Muhammad (Peace be upon him). The Prophet (p) used to mend his own shoes, sew his own clothes and work in his own house just as one of you would work. He acted like a common person - he patched his own clothes, milked his own goats and engaged himself in routine work.

These Mullah's do nothing but look for good food to feel up their stomach which starts from the bottom of their leg and goes unto hair line. Their livelihood depends on whatever they earn from charity. There is not much difference between a bagger and the mullah.

Undoubtedly, CTG is greatly responsible for giving free ride to these illiterate mullah's. Why do CTG Advisers run to consult Baitul Mukarrom Khatib who is a government employee? Why not governments summons his employee if consultation is required. These unwise decisions allow mullahs to think they are powerful.

I am not sure why this double standard on behalf of CTG! Teachers of Dhaka University had taken into prison on charges of breaking emergency what about these heinous terrorist mullahs? Why government not taking stern action against these small Islamist mafia outfit of Fazlul Haque Amini. Majority Muslims of Bangladesh do not believe in violent Islam. Where is our DGFI who can put Arifur Rahman in jail but terrorist Amini allows to have fresh oxygen.

I will ask not just the Muslims but people of conscious to fight the battle of justice in the name of humanity and destroy these heinous in shape of human.

Sincerely
Shamim Chowdhury

50 including 10 policemen injured

The surrounding areas of Baitul Mukarram National Mosque turned into a battlefield yesterday when members of an Islamic organisation clashed with police leaving over 50 injured including 10 policemen and 15 pedestrians.

Witnesses said the hour-long clash started around 2:15pm when police resisted about 500 activists of Anti-Quran Law Resistance Committee attempting to march towards the office of the chief adviser in a procession after holding a rally on the mosque premises.

Khelafat Majlish and Islami Shashontantra Andolan recently formed the Anti-Quran Law Resistance Committee to protest against the National Women Development Policy approved by the advisers' council recently.

"As police halted their progress, the agitating activists started pelting them with brickbats and broke through the police ring," said pedestrian Mostofa Kamal who took shelter near the mosque during the clash.

Fifteen pedestrians including two children Shaon, 12, and Badhon, 9, were injured.

Employees of nearby shop Mithu Carpets said, "When police locked the gate at the north side, the activists came through other gates and attacked police with bamboo sticks and brickbats."

At one stage, police resorted to charging truncheons and firing teargas canisters to disperse them. Police used around 10 teargas shells.

During the clash, the activists set fire to two motorbikes of law enforcers and damaged over 10 vehicles including two sports utility vehicles of the Islamic Foundation and the Ministry of Religious Affairs.

Chases and counter chases took place between the police and the activists.

Other witnesses said all business establishments were closed for three hours due to repeated attacks of the activists.

The injured activists and pedestrians received treatment from Dhaka Medical College Hospital, Suhrawardy Hospital and different clinics in the area while the policemen were treated at Rajarbagh Police Hospital.

Farid Uddin Ahmed, officer-in-charge (OC) of Paltan Police Station, told The Daily Star, "The unruly attackers injured several policemen, including Assistant Commissioner [AC] Pankaj Roy."

He said they would take legal action against those who were involved in the offence.

Two units of Fire Service and Civil Defence rushing to the spot to douse the burning motorbikes could not do their jobs as the Anti-Quran Law Resistance Committee activists attacked them and chased them away.

People who went to the mosque for Zohr prayers were stuck inside the mosque.

Vehicular movement in the area came to a halt during the clash and created gridlocks on nearby streets which had a knock-on effect on traffic situation on other parts of the city.

Before the clash, the Anti-Quran Law Resistance Committee held a rally on the mosque ground where they demanded resignation of Rasheda K Chowdhury, adviser to the caretaker government.

Terming the National Women Development Policy an anti-Islamic law, they threatened the government of toppling it if it did not amend the policy.

After the clash, the organisation held a press conference at the office of Khelafat Majlish. They claimed police prevented them from carrying out their peaceful activities and injured over 100 activists.

Maulana Abdur Rob Yusufi, Nayeb-e-Amir of Khelafat Majlish, spoke at the press conference among others.

[mukto-mona] Tibet

EPW editorial board should be thanked for carrying a piece by Dr Srinath Raghavan, instead of asking Neville Maxwell whose India's China War is still a Bible for most of the Leftist scholars and some ostensibly Left comentators. Indian government never encouraged Dalai Lama to do politics here. Maxwell. you know well, wrote that 1967 would be the last elections in India.
Scholars like Raghavan and Parshottam Mehra did many times more incisive research than Maxwell.
Those who are over-enthusiastically supporting the Free Tibet movement, particularly the so-called defence and security experts should read Raghavan's piece. There may be many among the protesters as genuinely fighting for their rights to self-determination which every nation including we, Bengalees in West Bengal, must not give up.

Here goes SR's article.
Sankar Ray

The Case for Restraint on Tibet
By Srinath Raghavan 5 Apr 08 (http://epw.org.in/epw//uploads/articles/12103.pdf)
For more than five decades, India has seen Tibet as part of China. If it were to now believe otherwise, this would be idle posturing. Worse, such a position by the government of India could jeopardise the chances of a settlement of the long-standing India-China dispute.
The recent events in Tibet have occasioned much speculation and controversy in India. The Indian government responded by curbing a proposed march to Tibet by émigrés. New Delhi also issued a measured statement,
reaffirming that Tibet was a region of China and expressing hope that all concerned would resolve the crisis by dialogue. The government's restraint, however, has ignited a fusillade of denunciation. Senior leaders of the Bharatiya Janata Party have described the violence in Tibet as "genocide", and have asked the government to raise the matter at the United Nations. Some commentators in the media, too, have disparaged the government for failing to take a robust stand. India, it is suggested, should shed its timidity, and at the very least back the Dalai Lama's call
for Tibetan "autonomy".
Leaving aside the merits and the drawbacks of the Dalai Lama's political agenda, there are good pragmatic reasons for India to stick to its present policy. For a start, treating Tibet as an "open question" is likely to boomerang on India. New Delhi has its own share of thorny issues, not least Kashmir. Interestingly, even as critics were demanding a robust policy towards Tibet, the Organisation for Islamic Countries described Kashmir as a burning problem and called for its resolution in accordance with UN resolutions. The Indian government has responded that Kashmir is an internal issue; but it is acutely aware of the need to sidestep such calls. In this regard, we should note that since the early 1990s China has opposed the internationalization of the Kashmir dispute – a position that accords with India's interests. If India were to intrude on Tibet in any manner, Beijing could easily shift its position on Kashmir. It is unwise to fire a blunderbuss from an exposed picquet.
Furthermore, does the political issue of Tibet (as opposed to the moral one) have any real traction on Indian public opinion or indeed the political parties? Evidently not. Despite the vicissitudes of Sino-Indian relations, no Indian government has ever sought to extend political support to the Dalai Lama. Back in 1954, India concluded
a treaty with China, recognising Tibet as "a region of China". As the then foreign secretary explained, this was "a concession only to realism". Successive governments have adhered to this stand. The BJP might now strike an activist pose, but as foreign minister in the Janata Party government, Vajpayee stated in Parliament that "We regard Tibet as a region of China". In 2003, the BJP-led government inked an agreement, affirming Tibet as part of China. This long-standing policy stems from a realistic recognition that India has no leverage on Tibet. It is idle to pretend otherwise.
The most important argument for circumspection relates to the ongoing negotiations on the boundary dispute with China, a problem that has marred Sino-Indian relations for 50 years. From a historical perspective, it is clear that China's sensitivities on Tibet have cast a baleful shadow on the boundary issue. When Jawaharlal Nehru signed the agreement in 1954, he knew that the Tibetans would be disappointed. Nevertheless, he declined to support separatist movements within Tibet. When the Dalai Lama visited India in late 1956, he sought Nehru's permission to stay on. Nehru, however, convinced him to return to Tibet and to arrive at an understanding with the Chinese authorities. Nevertheless, China believed that India was conniving at the activities of Tibetan rebels, mainly because of their conspicuous presence in border towns like Kalimpong.

In March 1959, following an uprising in Tibet, the Indian government decided to give refuge to the Dalai Lama. Then, as now, some opposition parties – notably the BJP's precursor, the Jan Sangh – clamoured for a tougher stance towards China and championed Tibet's political case. Beijing took a grim view of these developments in India.

Tibet and Border Dispute
In retrospect, it was unfortunate that the latent boundary dispute came to the fore at the same time. In exchanges with
China, the Indian government claimed the McMahon Line as the eastern boundary. This Line had been drawn in a tripartite conference between Indian, Chinese and Tibetan representatives in Simla in 1914. China had subsequently repudiated the Line. But in 1959, New Delhi argued that it was valid because Tibet had possessed "treaty-making powers" at the time of the Simla conference. This argument, of course, could be used to bolster Tibet's case for independence. The confluence of these events in early 1959 led the Chinese mistakenly to believe that India was plotting to detach Tibet from China.
Thus, in May 1959 the Chinese premier, Zhou Enlai, told ambassadors of communist bloc countries that India sought to
make Tibet a "buffer" state: "This is the centre of the China-India dispute". Later, during discussions with Nehru in April 1960, Zhou observed that there was a link between India's territorial claims and its position on the Tibetan rebellion. By the summer of 1962, Zhou was explicitly telling the Indian chargé d'affaires that New Delhi was colluding with the CIA in arming Tibetan rebels against China. Earlier that year India had set in motion the so-called forward policy, whereby small bodies of troops were stationed in areas claimed but unoccupied by China.
Beijing linked the forward policy with India's perceived efforts to make Tibet an independent state. The evidence now
emerging from Chinese archives shows that this misperception was a crucial factor in China's decision to go to war in 1962. China's mistrust on this count has only increased with the passage of time. There is, for one thing, the self-styled "Tibetan government-in-exile" based in India. Established in the early 1960s, the government- in-exile has ramified into a sizeable body. The Indian government has not recognised the government-in-exile and has averred that it would not allow the organization to undertake political activities. But the Chinese are sceptical of India's disavowals.

As premier Wen Jiabao recently stated, Tibet remains a "sensitive" issue in China's relationship with India. Hence, as part of any satisfactory solution to the boundary dispute, India will have to reassure China adequately that it has no designs on Tibet. The latest round of boundary negotiations, which began with the appointment of political  representatives in 2003, has reached an important stage. India and China are reported to have exchanged proposals for an overall settlement, encompassing all three sectors of the boundary. Beijing's recent statements, stressing its claims to Tawang, indicate that bargaining has begun in earnest. It is naïve to expect China to drop its claims on Arunachal Pradesh at this stage. Has India forsaken its claims to Aksai Chin? Both sides will only relinquish them when a deal is struck. To be sure, India cannot give up any populated areas; but short of this there is room for compromise.
China, too, can accommodate India's interests in the Ladakh sector. Reaching such an accord will take time. But it is imperative at this stage not to stoke China's concerns over Tibet, and so scuttle the negotiations. It bears emphasising that both sides have taken nearly five decades to get to this point. Irresponsible posturing on Tibet will only queer the pitch.
Srinath Raghavan (sraghavan.jscsc@defence academy.mod.uk) is with the defence studies department, King's College,
University of London, London.

[mukto-mona] Indian middle class

Will the "Great Indian Middle Class" show up, please? By Partho Sarathi Ray, Sanhati.
April 9, 2008 (http://sanhati.com/front-page/743/#comment-8468)

Where is the "Great Indian Middle Class"? Where are those conspicuously-consuming, frequently-flying, gizmo-toting, big car-driving, globalized offsprings of our jet-setting "new economy"? Don't we see them all around us: living in highrises with blue-tiled swimming pools, with people living a few miles away getting water once in three days, shopping in glittering malls built on the land of evicted slums, driving around in Toyotas and Chevrolets on roads choked with traffic? From all accounts, and appearances, we have reached the heady days when the Indian middle class has finally arrived. They are the ones who supposedly constitute one of the biggest markets in the world, for whom multinational corporations are falling over one another to invest in India, for whom our governments' policies are directed, for whom roads and airports are built, for they ARE the "people" of India. This great middle class is our hope, the engine of growth for our economy.
But is it true? Can we try to find out who, and how many, belong to the middle class in India? The data sets available from the surveys of the National Sample Survey Organization (NSSO) and from the 2007 report of the National Commission for Enterprises in the Unorganised Sector (NCEUS), better known as the Arjun Sengupta Commission, make for sobering, and often startling reading. The last three surveys of the NSSO, possibly the most comprehensive surveys on employment-unemployment and consumption expenditure, were done in 1993-94, 1999-2000 and 2004-05. We will take a look mostly at the 2004-05 data in our search for the Indian middle class.
The NSSO surveys collect data on consumption from each of the selected sample households in a detailed schedule containing a list of every conceivable item of consumption ranging from edibles to fuels to clothing and consumer durables, and also include educational and medical goods and services. Based on these extensive datasets, the NCEUS computed the monthly per capita consumption expenditure (MPCE) and daily per capita consumption expenditure (DPCE) in an effort to evaluate the performance of the economy in terms of the consumption expenditure of our people. Based on these values, each household was classified as one of the following: "extremely poor" when the MPCE is less than or equal to 0.75 times the poverty line (PL), "poor" when the MPCE is greater than 0.75 PL but less than or equal to 1.0 PL, "marginal" when MPCE is greater than 1.0 PL but less than or equal to 1.25 PL, "vulnerable" when MPCE is greater than 1.25 PL but less than or equal to 2.0 PL, "middle income" when MPCE is greater than 2.0 PL but less than or equal to 4.0 PL and "high income" when MPCE is greater than 4 PL.
Before we go into the details of what percentage of our population belongs to each group, it would be instructive to know what the poverty line is. There is considerable criticism about the determination of the poverty line in India, which systematically underestimates poverty and deprivation. The authors of the report determine the poverty line from the data of the employment-unemployment survey (EUS) and the results are not very different from the official poverty line estimates. For example, the official poverty line for 2004-05 is Rs 356.3 for rural areas and Rs 538.6 for urban areas whereas the poverty line as computed by the commission is Rs 346.2 for rural areas and Rs 514.0 for urban areas. It is also important to know that for international comparison purposes, people below purchasing power parity (PPP) of $1 are considered extremely poor and those below PPP of $2 are considered poor. $2 at PPP therefore signifies a sort of international poverty line.
Now, coming back to the data from the NCEUS, we find that the extremely poor have an average DPCE of just Rs 9 (PPP $1), the poor has DPCE of Rs 12 (PPP $1.3), the marginal, Rs 15 (PPP $1.6), and the vulnerable, Rs 20 (PPP $2.2). The middle income group has an average DPCE of Rs 37 (PPP $4) and the high income group has an average DPCE, the highest in India, of Rs 93 (PPP $10.2). These estimates are nationwide averages including rural and urban areas. These data by themselves are startling. The extremely poor, the poor, the marginal and vulnerable on an average subsist on less than Rs 20 per day and on less than Rs 600 per month (remember that the average to and fro train fare for an overnight journey in the lowest reserved class is around Rs 600; therefore, not withstanding Lalu Prasad's "populist" rail budgets, a train journey in a reserved compartment is out of bounds for all these people). The middle income group in India has an average daily consumption of the princely sum of Rs 37 and an average monthly consumption of Rs 1,098 which is just double the international poverty line (the airfare for a single journey in one of the low-cost air lines is around Rs 3000, which means that the airports and the proliferating airlines are not for these people). This leaves the high income group, and even the presence of the Tatas and the Ambanis, and the 53 dollar billionaires of India who contribute 31% of the GDP, and the thousands of conspicuously-consuming software professionals, does not pull the average DPCE of this group above Rs 93. This means that for an overwhelming number of people in this group, the DPCE would be much below Rs 93, and would be actually closer to the average DPCE of the middle income group.
Now, after we have an idea of "who" might (or might not) belong to the "great middle class" in India, looking at the percentage distribution of the above groups among the population will tell us "how many" of our people really belong to this group. The 2004-05 data on the distribution of population among these various groups classified on the basis of consumption expenditure show that 6.4% of the population is extremely poor, 15.4% is poor, 19.0% is marginal and 36.0% belongs to the vulnerable group. This means that together, a staggering 77% of the population lives on less than Rs 20 per day, which barely reaches up to the poverty line (therefore, a train journey with a reservation is out of question for 77% of our population, unless they go hungry for a month). Among these, 41%, the extremely poor, poor and marginal, live on an average expenditure of Rs 15 a day, which cannot afford more than a miserable existence in today's India. The vulnerable section, which constitutes 36% of the population, is one mishap away from destitution. So, a death or disease or even a crop failure can drive them to desperation; we now know to which group all the "suicidal" farmers belong. This leaves the so-called middle income group which constitutes 19.3% of the population; but these definitely do not constitute our fabled "middle class" with an average monthly expenditure of Rs 1098, which wouldn't even afford them a family dinner at any of the fancy restaurants. We finally come to the high income group, and find to our dismay that they just constitute 4% of the population. And remember, even this group has an average daily consumption of Rs 93, which is less than the price of two litres of petrol or a taxi ride in one of the big cities. Therefore, as we observed before, we estimate that an overwhelming majority, maybe 80%, of people in this bracket would actually be nearer to the middle income group than to the software professionals and business people who constitute our "visible" middle class. So, a back of the envelope calculation would show that the middle class, which we have been searching for, can be estimated to be around 0.8% of our population, which comes to around 8-10 million people. There is our "Great Indian Middle Class".
So, we finally find that our "great" middle class, for whom malls and multiplexes are built, rail fares are reduced, airports are constructed, and "Nanos", stained with the blood and tears of evicted farmers, roll off assembly lines, is more like the legendary Cheshire cat of Lewis Caroll's Alice's Adventures in Wonderland. If you look at it deeply and deconstruct it using statistics, it slowly disappears until what remains of it is its smile, suspended in mid-air as a macabre joke on the Indian people.

[mukto-mona] A feature on Carey

Colonial archive by Sankar Ray 12 Apr 08 (http://www.thehindubusinessline.com/life/2008/04/11/stories/2008041150100400.htm)

Tucked away on the bank of the Hooghly river at Serampore near Kolkata is the Carey Library, named after the illustrious Christian missionary Rev William Carey. Perhaps the oldest Indian library, it was a part of Serampore College. Carey Library still caresses about 16,000 rare volumes which are of special interest to historians, linguistics scholars and other branches of humanities abroad too. The library was set up immediately after the formation of Serampore Mission, wh ich came into being on January 10, 1800.

A British by birth at Pauler's Perry, in Northamptonshire, Carey arrived in Calcutta on November 11, 1793. He shifted to Serampore under Danish domination to insulate his missionary activities – educational in the main – during early 19th century. Veteran communist journalist Pabitra Kumar Sarkar wrote, "Carey, founder of the Baptist Missionary Society in England basically to spread education, came to India where he, along with Joshua Marshman and Hanna Marchman, set up the Serampore Mission, the first such body named after a town. A library building was constructed at an estimated expenditure of Rs 25,000 with over 5,000 titles. English, French and Latin aside, he was well-versed in 44 Asian languages."

Serampore was under Danish colonial occupation prior to the advent of British colonialism in this subcontinent. In fact, Frederick the Sixth, the King of Denmark, presented a charter to the college on February 23, 1827, with the University status. It was the first college in India to receive this status. However, this was for theological studies to start with. In fact, the college was authorised to award degrees in Arts and Theology. Apart from Carey, Joshua Marshman and his son John Clark comprised the first Council. The college, the prospectus issued stated, was "for the instruction of Asiatic Christian and other Youth in Eastern Literature and European Science." However, it was open to all irrespective of caste or creed.

Almost a century later, the charter was endorsed officially under the Bengal Govt Act IV of 1918.

With the retreat of Danish hold in India following the military triumph of the English East India Company, the Serampore College and the Carey Library were taken over by British colonial authorities. On February 22, 1845, Serampore College's ownership automatically passed into the British Government following the sale of Danish assets in India to Great Britain. In 1856, the Baptist Missionary Society in England took over the management of the college. Next year, it got affiliated to the University of Calcutta.

Carey however died a decade before Serampore was taken over by the British colonialists on June 9, 1834.

According to the present research adviser to the William Carey Library, Sunil Chattopadhyay, a library scientist, "Every ship that anchored at the Calcutta Port had a packing box full of books for Rev Carey. Besides those, there used to be some plants and seeds as he was a botanist too. He was the founder of the Agricultural and Horticultural Society of India, which was born in 1820."

Chattopadhyay laments that between 1945 and 1946, the library-house was occupied by the colonial army. "Very valuable books, documents etc were damaged." Though the World War II ended in August 1945, inexplicably enough, the armed forces continued to occupy the library long after that.

Among rare books, still kept for readers, one can find the first book in English on the life of Chinese philosopher Confucius, published in 1809; Plata Asiatica, a primer on botany written and published by Carey in 1831; Roxberg's Flora Indica; first edition of Old Testament, published in 1516 from Milan; Historicum Indicarum by G.P. Mackay; the first book on Indian history, published in 1593. There are 89 rare Sanskrit texts (handwritten), and several other similar texts – 34 in Bengali and 15 in other languages.

Another nugget of information is that Carey was the publisher of the world's first Hindi newspaper – Digdarshan ahead of Udanta Martanda, a weekly, which was published from Calcutta in 1826.

"Carey commissioned the services of pundits in Hindi, brought by him from Delhi, to publish it. But it was shifted to Shimla at the Baptist Mission's establishment. But unfortunately, a copy of the first issue was gutted in 1853," according to Sarkar, based on his conversation with Chattopadhyay. Chattopadhyay thinks Carey may have published a single copy of Digdarshan.

Joshua Marshman, head of Serampore Printing Press, being a translator on the payroll of British government, donated the books he received from the Viceroy Lord Bentinck.

The late Katharine Smith Diehl, a well-known archivist and librarian associated with the Library of Congress, USA, prepared a list of the rare books and documents at Carey Library and entered this information in the Dictionary of American Library Biographies.

Among notable visitors to Carey Library were the famous Nobel laureates in Physics, Niels Bjerrum Bohr, a Danish by birth, and C.V. Raman; some of India's early theoretical physicists such as S.N. Bose, and Meghnad Saha, and H.C. Mookerjee, former Governor of West Bengal and head of English, University of Calcutta in the 1930s. The name Carey is now recognised as a true lover of Indian people.

A devoted Christian, he was committed to do philanthropic activities. For him, this mission was his bounden duty "to attempt something towards spreading the Gospel in the heathen world", braving obstacles to his mission.

[ALOCHONA] Religious Fanatics Fought Fiercely With Police & Public to Protest Women Policy

What is shocking in this incident is that so far not a single fanatic was arrested by the Police. Didn't these guys break emergency rule? This is not the first time they did it. The hypocrisy and obvious double standard of the current CTG regarding these bigoted fanatics are mind-boggling. It is time to take serious action against these people and the madrassas that are breeding them. No wonder why they think they are above the law.

[mukto-mona] Re: Mukto-Mona's dumping practices?

WRT: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/mukto-mona/message/47687

I was unaware of that situation. In that case, Instead of bringing the issue to other forums, Mr. Gani should send his article again, if he thinks any of his articles had not posted . After searching the database, I had found numerous articles of Mr. Gani. Some of these are here :

I have no reason to believe that his post has been deleted intentionally. Proper inquiry in a civil manner is always welcome. If there is any mistake from our part, we will certainly apologize.

Obama issue went beyond personal, so I had to tell the moderators to stop posting the debates on the issue. It is here:
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/mukto-mona/message/47623

I am not sure, whether Mr. Gani had sent the piece before or after the note.

Anyway, I will take care of his future articles, if he give a cc to my adress while sending anything to MM. Hope it will clarify the issue.

mr. gani's allegation does have some basis and he's right at least in one instance which i clearly remember is when one of his posts [a very reasonable content asking members to extend their criticism equally to hilary & mccain alongside obama] disappeared [could be inadvertently though] in hrs after i saw it on pending. i wrote to mr. gani from moderator's account to send it again. not sure if he's received my mail.

[mukto-mona] Re: Mukto-Mona's dumping practices?

WRT: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/mukto-mona/message/47686

Dear Mr. Gani,
Before writing lengthy article and forwarding it to hundred of forums and recipients who have no relation to MM, you should check with the moderators whether your writeup has really reached to MM. I haven't seen any of your write-ups in MM pending list in last few days, let alone 'dumping practices'. You could have checked whether your email id has gone to 'Bouncing status' automatically or whether there is any other reason so that your articles are not reaching to the forum? Have you ever contacted any of the moderators personally? Your article is not that 'controversial' or 'heretic' to us that we need to dump you.

There are certain ways to communicate people before sending such allegation ('hate-preacher', 'dumping practice' etc.) to others. Writing lengthy nonsensical article based on fertile imagination and flawed intuition and do name-calling from personal bias is not a right decorum or practice, you may agree. It only shows the level of (im)maturity of the poster.

Avijit

after intense activism on the part of the combined forces of scientists, economists, environmentalists is encouraging.

[mukto-mona] Mukto-Mona's dumping practices?

10April2008

Dear and respected all;

"Mukto-Mona" regularly disposes my posting request. I am truly disappointed with this practice of dumping "opinions" those do not fit with its "blurry" vision and mission. I am requesting you all to review this and also to request the moderator, MM to have some guts for posting this commentary. Thanx and regards.

Free Speech: "Mukto-Mona"s double standard ?

Mohammad Gani (USA)

"Mukto-Mona" finally has set some "boundary conditions" around its own "freedom of speech" horizon; imposing restrictions on its contributors with "common sense" arguments (and judgment), visibly opposing the use of terse and offensive words like `cyber bully', `omniscient', `postures', `idiot', `audacious', `fool', `ignorant', `boor', `smart alecks' etc. Freedom of speech is obviously facing restrictions here in "Mukto-Mona" only because some of its own family member's recent exchanges of "competitive and intellectual bullets" to each other for winning the game. But what is the exact "material damage" of using these words if any at all, to the humanity, human rights….. and above all, to "Mukto-mona"s own mission and vision? "Mukto-mona" surely has discovered contributor's querulous behavior self inflicting, thus kept aside its own mission and choked the free speech rights of its own distinguished members for developing reasons; visibly in quest of preserving and protecting its integrity of "decency" over the rights of free speech; an interesting exception!

Hurting the religious beliefs of billons of innocent people world wide by promoting hate messages (articles) and brutally targeting them all for the militant behaviors of some fanatics (Political and regional causes) is materially way more damaging than the damage done by these contributor's offensive words. Has "Mukto-Mona" ever given out any importance or consideration into this?

Many of us, in general believe that there should be a moral, ethical and legal limit on what we want to say, wherever we want to say and the way we want to say? The most fundamental question thus immediate arises; "Should there be any moral and/or legal limits at all on our views those we wish to express publicly? The truth is that we are never justified in silencing of an opinion even the opinion is patently false. But this statement is "never absolute" at all. Probably, we could set some control "when and how" someone expresses an opinion. If the opinion is expressed at a time, at a place or the way it is expressed that it is likely to harm another physically, fomenting or prompting aggressive attack to that person; we then  "legitimately" can constrain that free speech. In all other situations, restricting speech is inappropriate, including "harmless and verbal personal attack" for logical reasons, as 'has been recently in Mukto-Mona!

Now looking through the exact meaning and the sky limit boundary of "Rights of Free Speech", should  it by any means be "legitimate" to restrict speeches at all when it visibly harms others? We find only few people openly denounce free speech rights while many promote it; but why? There could be 2 possible reasons; like psychological and logical in nature. The first one is very simple; never underestimate the "power of self deception"! These people strongly believe that they are the true advocates of free speech but strangely seek every available tool and opportunity to squelch speeches they "dislike". They are blind to what they think, what they do, why they do it and the way they do it! "Mukto-Mona" is surely in that list.

The logical argument is a little comprehensive and critical; it comprises "when" free speech is appropriate and "when is not". Many agree that we need to suppress speeches only when those harms others but the same people have different opinion on "exactly when" free speech actually harms others and thus disagreement or conflict surface on "when" speech can be restricted. The criteria of defining "harms" is also the root of conflicts that brings the issue of ethics and morality, inviting ethical and moral disagreement. For example "hate messages/speeches" against any race and of religious beliefs etc., could cause expressive harms and thus should be restricted exactly the way "Mukto-mona" has restricted so-called offensive words out of fear for causing expressive harms to itself like denting its image.

However, "Mukto-Mona" has all the rights and privileges to promote "hate messages" against particular religious groups in its territory and that could even cause expressive harms too, as "Mukto-Mona" always does; but the only exception is, "Mukto-Mona" acts/acted differently when its (Mukto-Mona) own image is on the verge of vulnerability among it own family territory, an aberration of its own vision! Restrictions there could freely be applied for moral, ethical and logical justification!!
