Re: [mukto-mona] Jan Gan Man: For Whom was it written?

Thank you for the succinct response. I second your words. Everything else is a monumental waste of time. Looks like the cultural Hindutva elements are at the end of their tether that is why they are digging this up. I hope others who are ill-informed not to be dupes and add fuel to this unnecessary discussion.

I will buy what the poet himself said about the history and the content of the poem. I read the poem one more time and am convinced that the poem was addressed to "Bharata vagya bidhata' who is definitely not the monarch. It becomes pretty clear when you read the last couple of stanzas. It refers to time immemorial, not the time during which the British started ruling the country. I will not be surprised if Rabindranath 'tricked' his friend in the administration by serving the double purpose of making him happy and at the same time glorifying and thanking his God who has been leading the Indians in a right direction since time immemorial or for ages.

While the original song penned by Tagore has 5 stanzas in all, the
national anthem is composed of only the first one.

Who the "odhinayoko" or "Bharoto bhaggo bidhata" in the anthem refer
to becomes more than amply clear if we look into the third stanza of
the original song.

It says:
Potono obhbhudhoyo bondhur pontha,
Jugo Jugo dhabito jatri
He ***chirosharothi*** [emphasis added], tobo rotho chokre,
Mukhuritho potho dinratri
Doruno biplob majhe,
Tobo shongkhodhoni baje
Shonkoto dukkho trata
Jono gono potho porichayoko joyo he,
Bharoto bhaggo bidhata
Joyo he joyo he joyo he Joyo joyo joyo joyo he.

(The way of life is somber as it moves through ups and downs,
But we, the pilgrims, have followed it through ages.
Oh! ***Eternal Charioteer*** [emphasis added], the wheels of your chariot
Echo day and night in the path
In the midst of fierce revolution,
Your conch shell sounds.
You save us from fear and misery.
Oh! You who guide the people through torturous path,
Victory be to You, dispenser of the destiny of India!
Victory, victory, victory to You!)
(Source: <https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jana_Gana_Mana_(hymn)>.)

It'd be quite instructive to take note of Tagore's own response on this issue:
"A certain high official in His Majesty's service, who was also my
friend, had requested that I write a song of felicitation towards the
Emperor. The request simply amazed me. It caused a great stir in my
heart. In response to that great mental turmoil, ***I pronounced the
victory in Jana Gana Mana of that Bhagya Vidhata [ed. God of Destiny]
of India who has from age after age held steadfast the reins of
India's chariot through rise and fall, through the straight path and
the curved. That Lord of Destiny, that Reader of the Collective Mind
of India, that Perennial Guide, could never be George V, George VI, or
any other George*** [emphasis added now]. Even my official friend
understood this about the song. After all, even if his admiration for
the crown was excessive,
he was not lacking in simple common sense."
(Source: <http://scroll.in/article/739703/what-explains-the-return-of-the-104-year-old-controversy-about-tagore-and-national-anthem>.)

***So, the complete song and Tagore's own testimony are the definitive
evidences against such malicious, if not uninformed,
interpretations.***

The above argument had already been provided on the india-unity list
two days back: <https://groups.yahoo.com/neo/groups/india-unity/conversations/messages/56657>.

Btw, Tagore had completed fifty when he penned the song.
Eight years hence he'd renounce knighthood in protest against the
Jalianwala bagh massacre by the colonial rulers.

[mukto-mona] Quran advocates for and against cruelty, religious freedom, fanaticism, extremism, and terrorism

Quran advocates for and against cruelty, religious freedom, fanaticism, extremism, and terrorism
Most of the Muslims around the world believe that the Quran is fully preserved as Prophet Muhammad got it. But the truth is far from this blind belief. The paper Quran has many versions which absolutely prove that it is not preserved as most Muslims hope. In fact the Quran never says that paper Quran will be preserved. The original Quran is preserved in Lauh Mahfuz and surely not in printing press.

[15:9]  Absolutely, we have revealed the reminder, and, absolutely, we will preserve it.

[85:21]  Indeed, it is a glorious Quran.
[85:22]  In a preserved master tablet (Lauh Mahfuz).

Historically even some close companions of the prophet Muhammad did not accept the present Quran as authentic but many gullible Muslims believe the paper Quran is 100% preserved. You can hope many things even though in reality those things might not exist! So let us have a glimpse on some verses of the paper Quran which advocate cruelty, extremism, barbarism, fanaticism and terrorism.

[9:29]  You shall fight against those who do not believe in GOD, nor in the Last Day, nor do they prohibit what GOD and His messenger have prohibited, nor do they abide by the religion of truth - among those who received the scripture - until they pay the due tax, willingly or unwillingly.

[9:111]  GOD has bought from the believers their lives and their money in exchange for Paradise. Thus, they fight in the cause of GOD, willing to kill and get killed….

[5:33]  The just retribution for those who fight GOD and His messenger, and make mischief in the land, is to be killed, or crucified, or to have their hands and feet cut off on alternate sides, or to be banished from the land. This is to humiliate them in this life, then they suffer a far worse retribution in the Hereafter.

[5.38] And (as for) the man who steals and the woman who steals, cut off their hands as a punishment for what they have earned, an exemplary punishment from God; and God is Mighty, Wise.

[4:15]  Those who commit adultery among your women, you must have four witnesses against them, from among you. If they do bear witness, then you shall keep such women in their homes until they die, or until GOD creates an exit for them.

However, the paper Quran talks many good things too.  The paper Quran in many verses is fully advocating religious freedom, tolerance, interracial harmony, justice, charity, and compassion.

[2:256]  There shall be no compulsion in religion: the right way is now distinct from the wrong way…

[10:99]  Had your Lord willed, all the people on earth would have believed. Do you want to force the people to become believers?

[6:107]  Had GOD willed, they would not have worshiped idols. We did not appoint you as their guardian, nor are you their advocate.

[39:41]  We have revealed the scripture through you for the people, truthfully. Then, whoever is guided is guided for his own good, and whoever goes astray goes astray to his own detriment. You are not their advocate.

[109:6]  "To you is your religion, and to me is my religion."

[5:5]  Today, all good food is made lawful for you. The food of the people of the scripture is lawful for you. Also, you may marry the chaste women among the believers, as well as the chaste women among the followers of previous scripture, provided you pay them their due dowries…

[5:27]  Recite for them the true history of Adam's two sons. They made an offering, and it was accepted from one of them, but not from the other. He said, "I will surely kill you." He said, "GOD accepts only from the righteous.
[5:28]  "If you extend your hand to kill me, I am not extending my hand to kill you. For I reverence GOD, Lord of the universe.

Many people hate the Quran very much; many of them even burn the paper Quran. Many people even believe that the Quran comes from devil. However, their mistaken viewpoint proves that they do not read the entire Quran carefully; if they do so they will surly find many good things in the paper Quran too. Due to the fact that the paper Quran is both talking for and against cruelty, religious freedom, fanaticism, extremism, and terrorism, I am a moderate Muslim and many Muslims around the globe also identify themselves as moderate Muslims.
In fact, more than 90% Muslims around the globe are moderate Muslims because obviously majority of Muslims are not terrorist. Another important fact is that Arabic language itself evolves to some extent over time, so old (1500 years ago) and modern Arabic language have some differences. Therefore, we may not correctly understand some verses of the paper Quran. Anyway, the bottom line is nothing we can follow and believe blindly, not even the paper Quran. May God bless you.
