Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) decided to close all apparel units in Ashulia for an indefinite period in the wake of yesterday's labour unrest that injured at least 200 people.

The decision came at an emergency meeting of the association and it reasoned out that the continuous unrest spread jitters among garment entrepreneurs.

Ashulia, an industrial belt, turned into a battlefield with several thousand garment-workers blockading the busy road and vandalising vehicles. The workers demanded Tk 5,000 in minimum wages.

At least 20 police personnel were among the injured after clashes raged between the workers and law enforcers. The areas troubled by the labour unrest include Jirabo, Narasinghapur, Ghoshbagh and Baipail.

Police and locals said the trouble originated from Ananta Garments in Nishchintopur, where workers demonstrated for a three-fold pay hike to Tk 5,000.
The violence spread as a group of workers from a nearby factory broke into a Ha-Meem Group factory during the lunch break, said witnesses.

Delwar Hossain, deputy managing director of Ha-Meem Group, said the 'outside workers' assaulted one of his line chiefs, as the officer tried to keep them from rampaging into the apparel unit. "The line chief was severely injured. Worse still, the agitators did not let him go to hospital for hours," Hossain said.

Police said Ha-Meem officials held a meeting with the agitators to settle the matter, but the effort fell apart. This prompted the company to shut its factories to avoid further trouble.

However, the agitation spread further when the angry workers came back out on the road and vandalised at least 50 vehicles and around 30 adjacent factories, witnesses said.

The workers locked in clashes with the police as the law enforcers tried to obstruct them from blockading the road by firing rubber bullets, teargas canisters and spraying hot water. The clashes continued until 7:00pm.Police said some unidentified people set fire to three vehicles of Skyline Garments Ltd.

Traffic on Dhaka-Tangail and Nabinagar-Kaliakoir highways came to a standstill at the time. The injured workers and police personnel were given first-aid.

Savar Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Monwar Hossain said police used more than 90 rubber bullets and at least 150 teargas canisters to calm the situation. Five people were arrested in this connection. Police said none of the arrestees was a worker.Additional 200 policemen had been deployed in the area to quell the agitation.

WORRIED GARMENT LEADERS
Garment makers expressed concern over the current spell of labour unrest that has been taking a heavy toll on the country's prime export earning apparel industry.

The exporters fear that orders from international buyers may shift to alternative destinations, following continued labour unrest, BGMEA said in an earlier statement.

The statement added that the unrest took place when stakeholders are reviewing the minimum wage structure for garment workers.BGMEA leaders said production in the factories at Ashulia, Savar and Rupganj has been hampered badly over the last 15 days.

They said the workers are not showing up at work and are involved in the unrest to realise some illogical demands, ahead of the announcement of a fresh minimum wage structure.

The government is likely to announce the new wage structure for the garment workers before Eid-ul-Fitr. The unrest is taking place even though owners are now paying the workers according to the rules of the minimum wage structure, the statement added.

The BGMEA leaders also said they cannot produce at full capacity due to the ongoing shortage of gas and power. As a result, they are failing to maintain the lead-time set by international buyers.

Failing on-time production, the owners had to air ship 45,882 tonnes of apparel items from December 9 to April 10 at a cost of Tk 1,311 crore, the statement said."If such unrest prevails in the industrial sector, it will erode the confidence level of the entrepreneurs," the statement said.

BGMEA sought cooperation from all to save the garments industry, which directly employs 3.5 million workers, the statement said.

[ALOCHONA] 474 registered NGOs spent Tk 10,366.76 crore in 6 years

Govt has no record of their project-wise expenditures: Matia

The government keeps no record as to how the registered NGOs spend their funds on each project, the agriculture minister, Matia Chowdhury, told parliament on Monday.
Replying to a question from Md. Israfil Alam, MP, of Naogaon-3 constituency, she said that the government was not in a position to provide information on how the NGOs spend their project funds as the NGO Affairs Bureau does not maintain the data-base of their accounts.
'No such database was created by the NGO bureau,' she said in her written reply.

The NGO Affairs Bureau, she said, keeps a year-wise account of expenditures by the NGOS.
Quoting the Bureau's statistics she said the registered NGOs spent a total amount of Tk 10,366.76 crore in six fiscal years beginning 2001-02.
Matia Chowdhury, who is also in charge of the prime minister's office in parliament, said that in all 474 NGOs were registered with the NGO Affairs Bureau during the previous BNP-led government.

She said the NGO bureau has sought an allocation of Tk 1 crore for the coming fiscal to get the activities of the NGOs reviewed by independent audit firms.
The government, she said, would be in a position to review the NGO activities once it got the allocation asked for.
The sitting of parliament resumed in the afternoon with panel chairman Fazle Rabbi Miah, in the chair.

[ALOCHONA] His dream comes true

Jute genome hero Alam tells The Daily Star stories behind his decoding feats, aspiration for doing something for motherland

Maqsudul Alam
In two successive years, expatriate Bangladeshi scientist Dr Maqsudul Alam achieved two milestones in genomics -- sequencing the genomes of papaya and rubber plants.

These successes shot Alam into spotlight in the scientific fraternity and hit headlines in the world's leading scientific journals in 2008 and 2009 but that could not quench his thirst for doing something special to benefit his motherland.

Maqsudul Alam, born in Faridpur -- a region known for growing jute -- finally translated his dream into reality this month by successfully leading a team of Bangladeshi scientists and researchers in decoding jute plant genome.

In Alam's own words, "It worked as an orchestra, the timing was right; the team members were passionate and talented.

"Through this project, we can deliver high quality and disease resistant seeds for improved jute fibre at very low cost to the farmers," hoped the University of Hawaii Professor Maqsudul Alam in an exclusive interview to The Daily Star through e-mail.

After he led genome sequencing of a transgenic papaya in Hawaii, Alam did the same for rubber in Malaysia last year. But deep in his mind, he always nurtured a craving for doing the same for jute at some opportune time.

Maqsudul Alam, whose father was martyred during Bangladesh's Liberation War, pursued higher studies and advanced research in Russia, Germany and USA, and had a knack for growth and developments of various plants even in his childhood days. He was mesmerised to see how big a lady's finger had grown after a flooding in the courtyard of his father's old Dhaka residence.

After successful accomplishment of jute genome sequencing and its field application, Alam said Bangladesh would be able to produce export quality jute products and multiply its jute trade in global market up to several folds.

Asked to describe how and when the jute genome sequencing programme was initiated, he said it all began when he approached Professor Ahmed Shamsul Islam, coordinator of GNOBB (Global Network of Bangladeshi Biotechnologists) in February 2008 regarding the possibility of sequencing the jute genome. Bangladeshi scientists already looking into the possibility of getting the jute genome sequenced jumped up at this offer and this set the ball rolling.

The following months saw Alam receiving phone calls from Agriculture Minister Matia Chowdhury, his visits to Bangladesh on several occasions, meeting with local scientists and different government, private, academic stakeholders. Finally, late last year the 'Swapnojaatra' team got the necessary funding from the government and accelerated the jute decoding.

He appreciated Bangladesh government's contribution of Tk 10 crore to fund his latest venture -- jute genome sequencing-- success of which was announced in parliament by the prime minister on Wednesday.

Researchers from Dhaka University, Bangladesh Jute Research Institute and Software Company DataSoft in collaboration with Centre for Chemical Biology, University of Science Malaysia and University of Hawaii, USA decoded the genome with Alam giving the lead.

Genome sequence represents a valuable shortcut, helping scientists find genes much more easily and quickly. A genome sequence allows scientists to identify and understand how genes work together for the plant's different features like growth, development and maintenance as an entire organism. This allows them to manipulate the genes and enhance, reduce or add certain features of the plant.

Physical work on genome sequencing took place in different laboratories at home and abroad, said Alam. He listed the names of the labs -- molecular biology, DNA isolation, bioinformatics and 'manual curation'-- at Dhaka University; assembly and annotation, cluster computing, all coding, middleware scripting at Data Soft; manual curation and functional genomics at Bangladesh Jute Research Institute, high-end computational facility, assembly, coordination and intellectual leadership at Centre for Chemical Biology of University Sains, Malaysia, and raw data generation, assembly and management, connecting all the dots and intellectual leadership at the University of Hawaii.

Asked about how much sequencing has been completed as jute genome has got 1.2 billion genetic letters, the renowned scientist said, "Draft genome sequencing is completed." He however declined to say when a patent could be obtained.

Referring to the inclusion of young graduates in the 'Swapnojaatra' team that carried out the jute genome sequencing task, Alam said this type of effort would stop the threatening brain drain from the country.

"If government does not invest, we may forget the rest. The brain drain will continue."

Dr Alam added, "The human history, our own history and the science discovery paths have shown without any reservation that if you need a healthy economy and society, short and long-term investment for education (from primary to post graduate) with emphasis on 'curiosity-driven' human resources is a must."

Asked to rate the research capabilities of Bangladeshi's scientists in the fields of molecular biology and plant biotechnology, Alam said, "Brilliant, dedicated and passionate researchers with extremely poor and outdated infrastructure. It's very sad and unfortunate that our team at Dhaka University does not have even ultracentrifuge and elementary high throughput technology."

Ultracentrifuge is a centrifuge optimised for spinning a rotor at very high speed that has important uses in molecular biology, biochemistry and polymer science. High throughput technology is a method to purify, identify and characterise DNA, RNA, proteins and other molecules.

[ALOCHONA] Evidence mounts on links between cell phones and brain tumors

Evidence mounts on links between cell phones and brain tumors

NaturalNews) A growing body of evidence, dating back to the 1960s, suggests that brain tumors may be only one of the many health problems produced by our new wireless society will produce.

Cell-phone technology "could lead to a health crisis similar to those caused by asbestos, smoking, and lead in petrol," warned the European Union's environmental watchdog agency in 2007.

The most ambitious attempt to catalogue the health risks of cell phones to date is the industry-funded Interphone study, carried out by researchers from 13 different countries (not including the United States). Although the study has been criticized for selecting data in a way designed to play down the risks of cell phone use, it continues to turn up alarming findings nonetheless. Among the findings so far are a 40 percent increase in brain tumor risk among adults who use a cell phone for 10 years (especially on the side of the head where the phone is held); a 300 percent increased risk of acoustic nerve tumors; and an increased risk of tumors of the parotid gland. The risk of a brain tumor increases by 400 percent in people who start using a cell phone before the age of 20.

Other studies, mostly out of Europe, have linked mobile phone and personal digital assistant (PDA) use to DNA damage, sperm death, and brain damage including early-onset dementia. These findings regularly make big news in the international press, but are by and large played down in U.S. media.

The United States has a long history of hostility toward the claim that the microwave radiation used by microwave ovens, cell phones, cell phone towers and wireless internet (Wi-Fi) can be harmful to human health. U.S. law prohibits challenging the placement of cell phone towers on health grounds, and an industry group (the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers) is highly influential in setting exposure standards.

The first research on the risks of microwave radiation was actually uncovered by a U.S. researcher, Allan Frey, in the 1960s. Frey discovered that "nonionizing" electromagnetic radiation -- previously thought to be harmless -- could still produce biological effects. For example, radar waves can produce "sound" even in the absence of actual sound waves by interfering with the brain's own electromagnetic signals. Frey found that microwaves could damage the organs of lab animals, even stopping their hearts completely.

Yet when Frey published a paper showing that microwave radiation could disrupt the functioning of the blood-brain barrier, the Office of Naval Research ordered him to conceal the work or lose funding. Pentagon-funded scientists claimed they had refuted his work, but refused to share any information on their data or methods.

Frey found that while the primary (or "carrier") wave of microwave radiation can cause health problems, the secondary wave that carries the actual data -- whether sound, text, pictures or other information transmitted via cell phones or Wi-Fi connections -- is far more dangerous. The more data streams carried, the higher the danger.

Modern research supports these early findings, with 75 percent of independently funded studies showing health risks from cell phone radiation (in contrast with only 25 percent of industry funded studies). Researchers have also documented dramatic rises in the rate of numerous health problems immediately following the introduction of widespread Wi-Fi and cell phone networks across Europe.

Such concerns have led European governments to consider banning Wi-Fi in government facilities, and to the Austrian Medical Association's call for a ban on Wi-Fi in schools. The national library of France has already removed all Wi-Fi connections due to health concerns.

In certain segments of the U.S. population, awareness is also growing. According to an anonymous investment banker speaking to a GQ reporter, rates of brain tumors among financial executives are shockingly high, a fact more and more people are attributing to constant cell phone use.

"I knew four or five people just at my firm who got tumors," the banker said. "Each time, people ask the question. I hear it in the hallways."

Re: [ALOCHONA] We have a long way to go

The truth so often hurts. Its why so many of us start history at 1971. Yet we should recognise and accept it. Until we do so, Bangladesh will never move forward and ordinary citizens will simply switch their loyalties between different yokes, all wielded by hordes and spawn of the devil himself.

So many think that trying war criminals will heal us - it won't. We need to recognise our history, accept that we are lacking and start changing our society to plug these gaps.

Then and only then will we step out from under the "achol" of these demon nethris and move forward.

Singing "amar sonar bangla" is a laughable platitude. Actually building "amar sonar bangla" is beyond the reach of the political elite of now. Mujib himself ensured that that would be the case.

Thank you Bangabandhu. Joy Bangla!

Subject: [ALOCHONA] We have a long way to go

We have a long way to go

I was invited by a friend to a dinner, in Kuala Lumpur, few weeks ago(March, 2010). There, I met a man (from prominent political family of 60s and from northern Bangladesh) at his early 70s, who came to Malaysia for a visit. 'How did you find KL, I asked, full of praise, 'Do you feel bad about your country seeing all the better things here?'
Both countries were in same economic conditions when we started, in fact , we were better in many ways, Malaysian students used to come to our universities. Today, the 2nd largest international student population in their private universities is from Bangladesh.

Like him many will not express much in utter exasperation, only blowhards may give sermons.

I could not hide my frustration!

Many passionately despise and make obscure the works of the dictator Ayub Khan who built more basic industries and infrastructure in 22 years than what has been built in 39 years by our ostentatiously patriotic Bengali leadership. A quick reflection emanating from the failure is describe as follows:
How can they, since, never before Bengalis were the leaders of Bengol !

Six to seven hundred years of Bengol's history did not present any ruler that ruled Bengali nation from Ghoraghat, Gaur, Pandua or Shonargaon. Intermittent microburst of locals were crushed by the invading Mongol,Turkish, Afghans or even Habashi slaves – 1487 to 1493 , Sultan Shahjahan, Firoz Shah, Mahmoud Shah and Muzaffar Shah, who turned to Sultan or King.

Intelligent and kind hearted Ballal Sen or Lakhsman Sen couldn't save the Bengol and had to flee. Bengalis, Aarakanees or Asamese become subjects of naturalised Turks – from Ikhtiaruddin Muhammad Bakhtiar Kholzi to Sirajuddawla. Twelveth to Eighteenth Century, seven hundred years, Bengalis failed to produce and culture their prowess, their potent for ruling.

Living under Delhi's Mughols (Mongols) with little freedom that eventually created few satraps yet could not live with it, starts in-fight, conspire and rose to trade their future to enslave themselves. Bengalis betray and invite foreign savage rulers only to be ruled. Ghoseti Begum, Ray Durlav, Jagath Seth, Mir Zafar's unparallel traitor characteristics challenged and destroyed remaining potency in next two hundred years. Their crime and treachery ashamed Lord Clive who left the throne within three years and made sure those traitors did not live as their subjects.

Minion Bengalis preferred the totally alien British over naturalized Turks and Afghans. Accepting how we were may lead how we do and how do we plan for future.

Two hundred years of slavery further crippled Bengali's capacity to rise and lead. A nation reduced to collectors and foot soldiers under foreign discipline, never could rise as warrior or conqueror to take charge of its own folks, culture and its destiny! In-fight and conspiracy that was induced in the mind and behavior of Bengalis helped them to separate in mid twentieth century only to be ruled again by the cousins of Afghans or Mughals. A great portion decided to live as refugee in Delhi or in Calcutta, the home of once powerful rulers. Bengalis never repented, rather they wrote and sang 'my golden Bengol I love you'.

Soft, silted soil, that mainly prevented Mughal mercenaries to storm, defeat, conquer and stay, characterized Bengalis body and souls -remain complacence with failed heroism of Khudiram, Titumir, Subhash Bose.
Conspiring Bengalis continue with their mythical behavioral patterns and strike on and off, with uproars of – Banglar mati durjoy khati jene nik durbrittyo'.

Traitors often do not rule, conspiring Bengalis can not settle, build and fight 'durbrittyo' of their own creation.

The great organizer of the great war did not have to command his army, again a foreign force had to come to his rescue to install his leadership.
Again, conspirators did not let him to rule. Ghosheti Begum, Umi Chad, Ray Durlav, Miran took rebirth and struck again. 'Durjay' land forms yet another brigade and finds another Dowla of local origin, only to be killed, as Bengol's history maintains.

Today, open newspapers, turn on your TV set, what do you have to read and hear about, only the reflections of those who drove Lakhyan Sen (1124) to Bikrampur from his power, who killed the fleeing and unarmed Sirajjuddawla, who fought with General Niazy, who belittled Bangabandhu's prowess and killed him, who killed a general who just started to dream. Strange enough, all mimic the same pattern of actions of their predecessors – acting on other's behalf or guidance and fail to take charge of the rule. Absence of bygone era of direct foreign rule, now have to rely on local rulers to impact upon and influence. When national priorities do not get importance it should be understood why.
Systematically local culture and characteristics taken over, who in turn destroys the national potency by crippling institutions. Left with none to nourish and culture the local leadership to instill nationalistic values and pride. Evidenced in our novels, poems, articles and educational curriculum. We fail to nourish and grow a sense of direction, develop our own capacity to think and rule.

Yet, their mystic literary capacity, intellect articulation are measured as was measured during early twentieth century, awarded greatest award for poetry that says nothing about the savage rulers or their subject's plight, only 'glorifies' intangibles.

Over the years successfully a polarized society is created, and it is energetically fed and nourished by the resources and power that do not get its energy from nationalism as visible in the economically successful countries. A leadership came up, nourished its own potentials and marched forward with its own design.

Our polarization led us to continuous bickering that destroyed our wealth and diminished our hopes, left us with substandard intelligence, quality of rule and thought.

All institutions put under crony of the rulers or under foreign resources only to decipher unwanted literature and numerator.

Seldom you see irate few, like those fallen heroes of eighteenth century whose 'basher killa' or improvised bomb did not destroy their objects or targets but themselves.

If Malaysia or Vietnam could settle and rule their country and bring envious prosperity to their teeming majority, why couldn't the Bengalis? Because, historically we are unable to influence and rule.

Strange enough till today a great majority from us love to take their wisdom from the separated portions of Bengalis, calls them brethren, who formed a strange relationship with 'others' and opted to be ruled directly, resembling our ancestors, losing our own being. More this grow, more we shift from our own selves.

We have a long way to go.

Haque
May 2010

Re: [ALOCHONA] Chatra League / Chatra Dal

What I find so extraordinary is the detail and precision with which this incident has been reported. It says something that this is considered a real story. Remove the DU background and you can see this story for what it really is - a clash between rival criminal gangs.

You could call it organised crime. Spawned, fuelled, sponsored and supported by the major political parties.

I'd like to invite these idiot in-bred illegitimate sons and daughters of Mujib and Begum Zia to explain why their continued existence is a necessary feature of our politics.

We should simply issue arms to university security with orders to shoot to kill these cadres on sight.

After all, that's how we deal with rabid dogs isn't it?

25 JCD activists injured in BCL attack

Dhaka, June 21 (bdnews24.com) -- At least 25 leaders and activists of Jatiyatabadi Chatra Dal (JCD) were injured in an alleged attack by pro-government Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) on the Dhaka University campus on Monday.

The incident occurred at around 12 noon when BCL activists stormed into Modhu's Canteen and attacked the pro-opposition JCD men with clubs and iron bars without provocation, Shahdat Hossain Ranju, one of injured, told bdnews24.com.

Among the injured were DU Chatra Dal convener Abdul Matin, senior joint secretary Obaidul Haque Nasim, joint conveners Asad and Hiru, deputy sports secretary Habibur Rahman Sumon, activists Resin, Shahnewaz, Nazmul Sakib, Zakaria, Sabid Hassan Babu, Moinul, Shahdat Hossain Ranju, Shafique and Sahabuddin Shihab. Several of the injured were admitted to Dhaka Medical College Hospital's emergency department. One of the injured, Obaidul Haque, was admitted to Islami Bank Central Hospital with a fractured head.

DU Chhatra League joint secretary Mustak Ahmed said they had been asking the JCD to withdraw, what he claimed, was a false case following a clash on Jan 18. "Today's incident was an outburst of anger as they were not withdrawing the case," he said.

University proctor KM Saiful Islam said the JCD filed a case following a clash with BCL. The Shahbagh police filed another case against JCD in connection with the same incident. The proctor said that the two organisations had been discussing withdrawal of the cases for some time.

JCD had said they would withdraw the case against BCL provided the Chhatra League withdrew the case filed by police against the Chhatra Dal, the proctor said, adding that the situation is now under control after police intervention. On Jan 18 two rival groups of JCD clashed over positions in its newly formed committee. At one point BCL leaders also became involved in the violence.
Police chief, proctor, JCD boss among dozens injured in DU violence

Dhaka, Jan 18 (bdnews24.com) – An armed battle at Dhaka University campus on Monday between two rival groups of Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal, over positions in JCD's newly formed committee, left at least 20 people injured, including the Shahbagh police chief and JCD president. DU proctor Prof Saiful Islam Khan was also hurt. He was taken to BSMMU Hospital while Karim and another injured police officer were taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital.

Central committee president Sultan Salauddin Tuku, who came under direct attack by rivals, was also rushed to DMCH, along with at least four other injured JCD leaders and activists. All university classes were suspended for the day. But exams were held, officials said.

The fighting JCD groups exploded cocktails and exchanged several rounds of gunfire, police and witnesses said. Police chief Rezaul Karim told reporters at DMCH that his men had to throw several rounds of teargas shells to bring the situation under control.

Leaders of the recently formed JCD committee were obstructed by a rival Chhatra Dal group from entering the campus in the morning, witnesses said. Both groups became locked in fierce clashes. A group of Bangladesh Chhatra League leaders also became involved in the violence at one point, witnesses said

Police chief Karim said: "We had tightened security on the campus Monday morning on information that rival JCD groups had taken position on the campus Sunday night. "The two groups became involved in clashes from 10am. We tried to protect Chhatra Dal president Tuku. I was injured during that time." He said police would launch a special drive to recover the arms that were used during the clashes.

DU assistant proctor Amzad Hossain told bdnews24.com at least 20 people were injured in the clashes. "We have not verified the exact figure yet." "Classes were not held today. But exams went ahead," he said.

Mahmudur Rahman Awarded the title "Banglar Singhamanob" by Canadian Human Rights Group

Montreal, June 12, 2010
The Save BD International, an international human rights organigation based in Canada in its yearly meeting reviewed the contemporary political events in Bangladesh and in particular the recent arrest of Mahmudur Rahman who is the editor of the popular daily Amerdesh. Rahman is widely known as an independent-minded Bangladeshi Bengali leader. His struggle has been against Indian hegemony and Indian imperialist ambitions against the Bengali people of the region. For his bold stand and struggle against the puppet regime in Dhaka led to his arrest. The Save BD International for Rahman's show of courage awarded him with the title, "Banglar Singhamanob."
In the meeting Mahmudur Rahman was noted as a fierce critic of Sheikh Hasina's government and its Chatro League and Jubo League's godfather type politics of tender grabbing, rape of women in dorms, and their attack on the opposition leaders. Rahman and his newspaper are also critical of the general deterioration of the law and order situation in Bangladesh. The daily is critical of Hasina government's concessions in giving transit to India without a national referendum and critical of the Indian dams on international rivers causing environment disasters in Bangladesh and in the region. For Rahman's firebrand speeches at home and abroad drawing large crowds of people, the daily Amerdesh was banned and Mahmudur rahman was taken to remand. The latest report shows that while in custody he was severely tortured by the special political unit of the Mohajot secret police.
"According to Mr. Rahman's version, in a dark room, being blindfolded, he was attacked by some police personnel or other individuals at around 1-30 am who unclothed him, started beating mercilessly. They did not quiz him in respect of the case for which remand was granted. Due to serious torture he became unconscious within half an hour."
Newsreport shows previously Mahmudur Rahman was repeatedly attacked in Dhaka and in London allegedly by the Awami League goons but he survived the attacks. The Awami League members in different districts of Bangladesh also simultaneously sued him but the court released him. This time Hasina government arrested him on a flimsy ground, took him to remand and tortures him. The Save BD international condems the arrest and torture of an editor of a popular daily and closing the newspaper as underming the freedom of speech. It recognizes this as a new form of barbaric oppression in the history of Bangladesh. Despite protests by 25 editors of Bangladeshi newspapers, Rahman still remains in custody. His arrest has been condemned by international agencies all around the globe fighting against oppressive regimes. In addition to the Amerdesh newspaper, during Hasina's over just a year term in office the opposition news media Jamuna TV, Channel 1 were closed and a dozen of opposition newspaper journalists were being either attacked or killed.

Awami League Party originally founded by Maulana Bhasani once led a progressive movement which culminated into the independence of Bangladesh is now led by Hasina who shows intolerance to the opposition, some political analysts even termed her as if a fascist leader. While in opposition she was allegedly involved in the death of innocent victims of the Sharaton Hotel bus event, and her involvement at the Baitul Mokarrum Logi Boitha attack on her political opponents causing several deaths.
Discussants at the Save BD meeting termed Hasina's Mohajote government behavior as if a continuation of the BKSAL one Party rule in 1974, the latter's repressive measures led to the death of upto 30,000 of the opposition members in extra judicial killings. In 1974-75 Maulana Bhasani led the opposition movement against Indian hegemony and the BKSAL dictatorship but now Mahmudur Rahman the brave son of Bangladesh is fighting again against Indian hegemony and for the freedom of expression and democratic development in Bangladesh. The Save BD International is proud to award the title "Banglar Singhamonab" to this great charismatic personality of our time that Bangladesh produced. For his continued determination and courage to fight against the present fascist regime in Bangladesh we now would like to call him with the title "Banglar Singhamanob Mahmudur Rahman."

Save BD's International committee also demands the government of Hasina to take immediate steps to unconditionally release the great leader from jail. If the regime fails to comply with the demands, the Save BD international has decided to work with the international community of journalists and human rights activists to take the issue to the International Court of justice. If successful among other things the Court might ban Hasina's travel abroad.

[ALOCHONA] Re: MAHMUDUR RAHMAN---- THE KULANGER!!!

See Robin if we talk about just this forum for example...

The sensibilities and logic of those who forgive every sin committed by theior own party are the sensibilities and logic of those at the top of the party down to the middling ranks of that party down to the piddling ranks of that party. There's no difference in essence. They differ only in style.

Why should they make all the noise? I tell you man, I spend my whole life confronting such people face to face. Some I haven't beaten - but no one's beaten me yet either. You may say its arrogant but its almost childishly simple beating these people if they give you half a chance. Thats why they are always busy talking about the opposition, don't ever want to look in the mirror and almost never get to convince their own decent children to join their party officially.

They need each other. It's why Hasina saved Khaleda from exile. It's why Khaleda was effectively silent after the last election.

Because Deshi men are busy dozing to Rabindranath I gots to bark louder dude. I know what my brethren in the fakiror jaath (the political subset of the great Bengali nation, so please don't mind) need - heck I'm one of them : )

WOOF! WOOF!

Dear Friends:

I strongly condemn the heinous and vindictive activities of the current Bangladesh government for torturing editor of a national daily newspaper "Amardesh" in inhuman way. Rulers of the  current Bangladesh government should be held responsible for their criminal acts.

At the same time I request all of you to contact your area congressmen, congresswomen, senator, MP or elected public officials of the country you live and bring their attention to this fact with other inhuman activities of the current Bangladesh government. Also, raise your voices against the current Bangladesh rullers for their barbaric and inhuman activities.

As a citizen of this civilized world we can not turn our eyes to ignore the uncivilized attrocities of the current cruel Bangladesh government. Current rulers came into the power with bloods in their hands (please see below the web-linkages) and keeping those hands with more fresh bloods. We can not remain silence anymore.

Bangladesh government must stop inhuman tortures to Mahmudur Rahman and release him with dignity immediately and must give him the rights of due process of law.

At the same time I urge all Bangladeshi people around the world to raise thier voices to Prosecute Sheik Hasina for ordering to kill innocent people with logi boitha. http://bangladesh-web.com/view.php?hidRecord=319801

Mahmudur alleges'inhuman torture'   in custody
Staff Correspondent

The detained Amar Desh acting editor, Mahmudur Rahman, on Saturday urged the court to save his life from the 'inhuman torture' he was allegedly undergoing in police custody.
'Your honour, please save my life,' he told the court. 'I am not supposed to be alive after the level of torture I have experienced at the cantonment police station. I was blindfolded and stripped by five men in the lock-up. I fainted after they pressed me on the chest and back.'
Mahmudur was brought to the court at around 3:00pm after a three-day remand in the case of obstructing the police. He said he could not stand on the dock and the court allowed him to sit.
He told the court he had undergone 'inhumane torture in police custody. He asked the court whether an individual could be tortured if the constitution, democracy and human rights were upheld in the country.
After his remarks, his attorneys told the court he should be granted bail in the case as he was a former adviser with the status of a state minister and editor of a national daily. 'The case in which the police arrested him was a false case. Police said they had been assaulted but the persons beaten up had not been named. So we hope the court would grant him bail for the sake of justice,' said Sanaullah Mia.
Another attorney Taimur Alam Khandakar said the sections but one of the code of criminal procedure under which the case was filed were bailable.
The court, however, remanded Mahmudur in custody for four days in an anti-terrorism case filed by the Uttara police.
At one stage of the hearing, Mahmudur's attorney Nasiruddin Ahmed Asim submitted a directive of the High Court on remand and said the directives were ignored during interrogation. He said as per the order, only the investigation officer would interrogate the person remanded in custody.
'The directive also makes it mandatory to conduct health examination before a person is remanded in custody but this directive was also ignored,' he added.
More than 100 lawyers, including Salahuddin Ahmed, Ahsan Kabir, Zakir Hossain, Zainal Abedin Mesbah, Monir Hossain and Belal Hossain Jasim, were present in the courtroom.
The BNP secretary general, Khandaker Delwar Hossain, meanwhile, on Saturday demanded immediate release of Amar Desh acting editor Mahmudur Rahman and condemned the inhumane torture on him in custody.
Delwar said in a statement the torture of Mahmudur Rahman in custody exposed the fascist character of the power hungry Awami League government. He demanded proper medical treatment of the editor.
'They trample the rule of law and the independence of the judiciary to deny freedom of the press only to ensure that no one would dare to criticise them,' he said.
'That is why the Awami League government was torturing Mahmudur Rahman physically and mentally,' he said.

[ALOCHONA] Largest environmental disaster in U.S., and possibly world history

Largest environmental disaster in U.S., and possibly world history

It's the largest environmental disaster in U.S. - and possibly world history. But do you know exactly where it is? Could you point to a map and show where the oil rig sank? Do you know what the topography of the surrounding area is?

Hint: If you think it's flat seafloor - as implied by BPs
drawings - you'd be wrong (the spill site is actually located within a giant canyon system, rather than on flat ground). This essay will provide some basic orientation as to ground zero for the oil spill.

Where Is the Spill Site?

Here is the spill site - designated with the fire icon - as shown on Google maps:

This NOAA image gives a basic overview of the oil spill site in relation to the surrounding area:

The oil spill is occurring within the "Macondo prospect", which is located in Mississippi Canyon Block 252 in the Gulf of Mexico.
Here is an image showing the Mississippi Canyon compared to other areas in the Gulf of Mexico:

This shows the relation of Block 252 to nearby sites:

Here is Block 252 shown in comparison with nearby sites:

And this is the definitive
high-resolution map showing block 252 in comparison with other prospects in the Mississippi Canyon area and surrounding areas.

But in order to really get a feel for what's happening underwater, we should look at detailed topographic maps. Indeed, knowing the topography and the geology at the spill site is crucial in understanding the risks involved and being able to determine the best approach for stopping the leak.

Topography of the Spill Site

Here's a map of the Gulf of Mexico:

Here's another map courtesy of
Wired (the spill site is between the two sets of red hash marks):

Here's an image of the Gulf of Mexico, showing the Sigsbee and Florida Escarpments (Block 252 is approximately half way in between the 2 escarpments):

Here is a satellite image of the area provided by the Minerals Management Service and NOAA's
Multipurpose Marine Cadastre:

Here is a close-up (I placed a hand icon at the approximate location of the oil spill based on latitude and longitude):

Here is an image - courtesy of NOAA's
GeoPlatform service - showing the topography surrounding the leaking wellhead:

Here is a close up of the same image:

Here is the same image with the spill location indicator removed, so that you can see the slope of the area at the spill site:

(Note: the GeoPlatform service is also very useful for forecasting the near-term trajectory of the oil spill).

Here is a map giving a different view of the steep canyon in which the oil spill site is located:

Some oil industry professionals are
worried that a landslide at the spill site could make the oil spill much worse by carrying away the blowout preventer, riser and all other equipment. While I have no idea how likely it is that a landslide could occur before the well is capped, it is true that:

(1) The spill site is located in a steep canyon, as discussed above;

(2) There are hundreds of feet of loose mud and muck on top of the sea floor in this area; and

(3) Many deepwater, oil-rich areas within the Gulf are tectonically active.

[ALOCHONA] Re: Amar Desh editor arrested after closure

Dear Alochok Junaid

I know you are not suggesting that my parents urged from my childhood to use offensive language :) And certainly our chemistry is not matching as your chemistry is perhaps closer to those whose 'ideologies' I oppose.

There is no hypocrisy here. Lets see how clear the English language can be:

I support the CTG and its minus two formula, then and now.

I am thus OBVIOUSLY not advocating the arrest of the CTG. I am advocating that those who screamed for the CTG's arrest during the CTG are now hypocritically silent when they have the power to do so.

Of course, murder and extortion are not as rude as swear words. Nothing is as genteel as the Bengali middle class - its okay to stand in the dogs*it of our politics for decades but lets not mention it shall we.

Our country is ruined by those who hijack public life and spread the devil's lie that Hasina or Khaleda are the saviour of the nation. But lets not focus on that, lets fight for ettiquette and demand propriety from those who protest such lies like animals.

I am by no means the saviour of Bangladesh. But I am trying to serve the spirit of ancient Bengal that declares that Hasina and Khaleda are NOT the saviour of Bangladesh. And though I am crass and crude I do a damn sight more of protesting than all of polite society combined.

And I serve that voice well by offending the comfort zone of those who are just a little too comfortable, a little too resigned and a little too defensive about the stautus quo of Bangladeshi politics.

You do realise how offensive one has to be to rattle these guys : )

You are not a fakiror zaath. Bless you. But I am. And I am know who my brothers are. They are those who march for AL and BNP without demanding internal reform.
