Govt recalling sacked military officers

Dhaka, Aug 6 (
bdnews24.com)—The Awami League government has started recalling armed forces officers who it says were sacked by the previous BNP-led government on political considerations.Defence committee chairman Idris Ali MP told bdnews24.com on Thursday that a list of "victimised" officers was sent to prime minister Sheikh Hasina last month who ordered their reinstatement "after thorough investigation".

"The ministry officials have informed us that the government has already started reinstating the officials sacked by the previous BNP government for political reasons," Ali said after chairing a meeting of the parliamentary standing committee on the defence ministry.Ali did not mention how many officials of the armed forces were found to have been sacked for such reason or the number to be recalled, but it was his standing committee that had recommended reinstating the officials in a meeting on July 14.He said the government would also promote the officials who were deprived of advancement by the BNP government that was in power from 2001-2006.

Another committee member, Monzur Quader Quraishi, told
bdnews24.com, "The BNP government dismissed army officers whose relatives were involved in opposition politics"."The government will also award them overdue promotions," said Quraishi.Neither the defence ministry nor headquarters of the armed forces have disclosed any information relating to sacking of its officers on political grounds. Pat media reports, however, have suggested that at least 14 officers of the armed forces, equivalent to the rank of major general, were sacked between October 2001, when BNP government took office, up to 2003.

New law gives Dhaka largest number of VVIPs Shahriar Noori
The reintroduction of a law giving protections to Bangladesh's founder Sheikh Mujib's offspring has given the country an opportunity of having the largest number of VVIPs (very very important persons) in the contemporary world. The number of the adult members of the Sheikh family is now 10.
It may be pointed out in this context that the Queen of England is perhaps less fortunate than the Sheikhs of Bangladesh though her United Kingdom inherits an uninterrupted legacy of running the British Empire effectively since 16th century when Queen Elizabeth -1 ruled the kingdom.
In today's Bangladesh, the members of the extended family of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman includes in-laws and grand children with family names such as Sheikh, Mia, Khondaker and Siddiguqi. They are Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, her son Sajib Wajed Joy, daughter Putul, Joy's American wife, Putul's husband , Hasina's sister Sheikh Rehana, Rehana's husband Shafiq Siddiqi, Rehana's son Boby Siddiqui, Boby's European wife and Sheikh Rehana's daughters.
At present, the adult members are entitled to get secured houses and other related services from the state, as per the dictates and meaning of the unique law, according to informed sources.
Excepting the Sheikh's family, the other lone VVIP of the country is President Zullur Rahman.
Meanwhile, the national news agency BSS reported last month that the government was contemplating to raise another elite security force, Bureau of Crisis Response and Special Response and Protection, with members drawn from the police service. However, informed sources say there is always a scope for the new force - if raised - to be augmented with the members of other elite security forces like the Special Security Force (SSF).

[ALOCHONA] Satellite and cable propaganda

Satellite and cable propaganda

Taslima
factia@gmail.com

Is seems that there is no campaign in Bangladesh to stop free broadcast of Indian satellite and cable operation. I think Bangladesh must stop giving India free access to 160 million strong nation to promote its propaganda, products and services. Otherwise, Bangladesh will never able to develop our own media or service industry. As you know access to the media is a way to the heart of the nation. Do the middle-class and the Ulema families see nothing wrong with that? But even the socalled anti-India parties like BNP/Jamat did noyhing in their 5-year rule. The media is silent too.

I think it's important to create such awareness within ones own household first before we can take it forward. My own view is that our Ulema at Friday prayers should gently exhort their congregation to stop subscribing to Indian channels and Indian made unessential products that are available from other sources particularly MADE IN BANGLADESH ones. The Japanese, Koreans and Chinese have created a strong sense of their identity by being encouraged to value their own manufactures. If we don't value ourselves, lack self-respect, how can we function as civilised beings? Are the Japanese better Muslims than us?

It's a hearts and minds thing. In the same manner we should go to the all the political parties, behaving in an empathetic & respectful  manner, asking them to promote the national interest, removing the free access to Indian propaganda. If the economic argument is more persuasive use it. If nationalism is preferred use that; if a moral argument is stronger use that, etc. But I think cultural, human resource and economic argument are the strongest.

Another is the issue, unknown but certainly misunderstood by the ignorant & naive intellectuals and media the facts about Indian censorship of Bangladesh media and culture (not forgetting, in the same manner, that India has very little trade with us; some how we seem to be giving a gift of over $10 billion every year to that hostile country).

It's a very urgent matter needing attention for the sake of Bangladesh survival. We are involved in information warfare, a psychological weapon, a weapon as lethal as biological weapons.
