Re: [mukto-mona] Sajeeb Wazed Joy: The Dark Life Behind The Scene

Dear Dr. Rahman,

If you read between the lines, you would probably realize that I did not necessarily accept the 3 million deaths. I actually said the country talks about 3 million death yet does not do anything about it. To me, the talked about figures, 3 million, 3 lakh, 50 thousand, all are big enough to be called a genocide; and the country, beginning with Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, was never serious about punishing the most heinous criminal brothers who after all wanted the integrity of the largest 'Muslim country' in the world. Any way we look at this history of Bangladesh, it is disgraceful, an immensely shameful image for Bangladesh.

I totally agree with your last paragraph below; and the endemic corruption in the country is also a hugely shameful image for Bangladesh.

Thanks,
SuBain

Dear Dr. Bain,

I am a Bangladeshi by birth and I would like to see the country prosper and live with honour and dignity. But when I see that figure of 3 million deaths in the liberation war, I cringe. I cringe because of the enormity of the lie and I cringe because of the failure of knowledgeable and erudite people like you to accept facts. Let me tell you the story (and it is absolutely true) behind the 3 million.

When Sheikh Mujibur Rahman came back to Dhaka from the Pakistani prison via London, he had been briefed by politicians, civil servants, diplomats, foreign dignitaries etc. A couple of days later he had to give interview with foreign journalists. He was told by his team that during the war as many as 3 lakhs (i.e. 300,000) of people died - a wild exaggeration by itself.
Then in the interview Sheikh Mujibur Rahman said that 3 million people had died; he thought the English of lakh is million! Once uttered by the 'father of the nation', nobody wanted to contradict or correct him. So this totally bonkers figure of 3 million got stuck. A more discerning person would not quote this figure at all. The actual figure, derived from statistical studies and from survey conducted during the 1970s, is more like 50,000 to 60,000 deaths. (You compare the death figure from the battle of Stalingrad, which was bloodiest battle of the WWII. Over 1 million Nazi (Axis) soldiers with 500 most advanced tanks and 600 aircrafts faced and fought with 1.2 million Red Army soldiers with 400 tanks and 350 aircrafts over a period of six months. The Stalingrad battle was the largest and bloodiest tank battle in the world, Stalingrad was literally demolished to ground, people lived in bunkers and sewage drains eating rats. The total death at the end of it all was 1.4 million. Does Sheikh Mujibur Rahman or her daughter want to say that more than double of that number of fatalities had happened in Bangladesh, although there were no large scale battles, no tank battles, no aircraft bombings, only local skirmishes?)

This attitude of falsifying facts or evidence from the top political figures and leaders of the society to, dare I say, the common people is symptomatic of Bangladesh's malaise. What the country needs is accountability and a high dose reality and common sense.

I do not think this kind of propaganda would help the cause of the fanatics who are doing it. Even if everything in the video were factual, it does not damage much of the so-called image of Bangladesh. For Awami League, Joy is not a candidate; he is working only for promoting that party.

Besides, what is the 'image of Bangladesh' in the outside world? For just one example, the country talks about 3 million murdered in 1971, yet does not punish any of the murderers in more than 40 years, nor does it secure compensation, or even an apology, from any of the murderers! With this kind of value the country giving to its 3 million lives, Bangladesh has no respectable image to people who care about the image of any country/society.

Well Bangladesh is a jungle; all sides are doing inappropriate things. But I think, with the IT skills of people like Joy, Awami League can deliver the patriotic fervor of 1971 to the nation, which would definitely help that party and its associated progressive allies.

Re: [mukto-mona] Sajeeb Wazed Joy: The Dark Life Behind The Scene

If you read carefully Dr. Bain's post, the point is rather our inability to extract an apology from the perpetrators, let alone sending the imbeciles to gallows. If three millions were a true number, nothing would have been done anyway. Three hundred thousands deaths would have faced the same scrutiny too. Life is rather cheap commodity in Bangladesh. Mostly Hindus were selectively eliminated during the liberation time and that is why nobody really cared to dig the matter any deeper. Ironically, our worst perpetrators have become our true heroes. How these great religious people can really commit a genocide? The issue is not even a good number, it is our pathetic national character! And, that has hardly changed. Thank you.

Re: [mukto-mona] Angola Bans Islam, Destroys Mosques

Caste-ism had been prevalent in Islam right from its inception. Zia al Din Barani, for example, was a strong defender of it.  During his days, Indian Muslims had about four hundred different castes among them.

Caste-ism is illegal. Most of the educated people are against it. It is going away slowly but surely. But the Islamists like you will always refer to your scriptures and justify discriminations against women.

This is the reason why I am in favor of restricting the scope of a religion only to  serving religious needs. But people like want to go beyond it.

According to Bangladeshi press, Allama Shafi took back most of what he said. Even at that, as a Muslim I am free to protest it. As per Islamic belief, we have to stay true to the holy Qurán, Sunnah and explanations that reflects these two sources.

The Qurán elevated women and I am satisfied with the status given. While ALL of us (Men and women) should wear decent dress (Most American offices have dress codes), as per Islam women can work, own business (Like last prophet's PBUH wife Khadija did). So when Allah gave these rights to women, I do not think culturally influenced men can take them away from them. There are restrictions on BOTH men and women. Those who want to practice Islam need to follow those basic instructions.

The difference between Islam and Sanatana Dharma (AKA Hinduism) is we can disagree with Mr. Shafi without violating foundations of Islam. However in order to protest (Or destroy) caste system, one  has to make fundamental changes to Hinduism.

If you ask me, I can sit with Allama Shafi and discuss such issues (I have done so with some bigger Islamic leaders as well). However I prefer to leave it to Hindus about changing caste system. I am 100% against it but I am probably is not the right person initiating change in something so fundamental to Hindu tradition.

My two cents.

Shalom!

Religion is not always violent. Without being violent it can still violate human rights. Think about Allama Shafi's Tamarind Theory. You can neither endorse nor be passive about it. This is a great sin that has been committed by many of our political parties and partisan intellectuals.

Why should I remain silent if some orthodox Hindu preaches casteism?

Silent killers also need to fought.

Thank you for your well written post.

I have a simpler solution. Can we not just go after violent people? If a group of Hindus peacefully pray to goddess Durga, I do not see any problem with it. If a group of people pray to Allah, I do not see any problem with it.

It is the use of violence to resolve issues that creates problem for some countries.

I feel it is much easier (And FAIR way ) way to deal with issues. No need to be biased against any religion or favor any religion.

Let me address some of the points made over the last couple of days by quite a few people in this forum.

I have no problem banning all religions. As I wrote before on this thread, I think Angola has done it wrong particularly because it banned only one religion.

While I can see that most religions, especially the ones that are based upon fearing what is known as God, have a lot of stupidity and hatred in them, I think the real problem is with people. If people had the mind of reasoning and thinking freely, the religious nonsense and hatred would be rendered irrelevant, people would naturally give up religions. The modern educated societies and nations are actually doing quite a bit of that. If we look around the developed world, it would be obvious that atheists and agnostics constitute an increasing percentage of the population. A lot of Christians in the developed countries do not try to follow the Bible as much as millions of Muslims try to follow the Koran, for example. Religion as a commodity is sold a lot more in uneducated and backward societies than in educated and advancing societies.

I think a methodical removal of religious nonsense, hatred and injustice is what needs to happen in this world. That process has to begin with separating religion from the state, and end with making it absolutely personal.

For example, I do not see any problem if someone thinks he can go to heaven by praying to the goddess Kali or to Allah. However, the civilized world should not tolerate anything like people thinking, and acting upon that thought, that they can go to heaven by killing themselves for the purpose of establishing their religion on Earth, for example.

Society/state should not meddle in other people's religion, only if religion is kept at an absolute personal level. When the practice of one's religion goes against other people's human and citizenship rights, the phrase of 'meddling in other people's religion' should be trashed; the society/state/world should do whatever is needed to stop such practices of religions.

Well, that is all for now.
