Ziaur Rahman is a direct proof that in this world the FAKES survive: "survival of the fakest". In reality Ziaur Rahman is a "Fake Hero" of our war of independence ..... He was an intelligence office in the Pakistan Army ... and an infiltrator in our Liberation war .... the things were done by the way of deceptions ..... Does anyone know why did he wait untill the night of 27th March 1971 to make the Radio announcement in English? It was the agenda of the Yahia gong to proof that Banglalees are secessionists so that the rulling Pakistani Junta can justify their crack downs ... The recent publicity about Zia's birth place in Bagbari in Bogra district is a blatant lie and a hoax. It is, in essence, an attempt to "dope" the people of Bogra vis-a-vis the people of Bangladesh. Recently, there has been some stories describing Bogra as the birth place of Tarek Zia. Tarek Zia was actually born in Karachi ..... Ziaur Rahman's Family was settlers from Birbhum, West Bengal. They didn't have any connection with Bogra District before early 1950s, when his ancestorial properties in Birbhum district (West Bengal) was exchanged with that of a hindu family in Bogra who was in the process of migration to West Bengal. Obviously, Ziaur Rahman was born in Calcutta (now Kolkata) where his father worked as forensic chemist. Neither Ziaur Rahman's parents nor Ziaur Rahman ever lived in Bogra district. After Partition of Ziaur Rahman's father opted for Pakistan and moved to Karachi and lived there until his death. [Many of Ziaur Rahman's extended family still live in Birbhum, any serious researcher can verify the facts about his ancestorial home was in Birbhum West Bengal....] Again, Ziaur Rahman is a proof of the maxim : "survival of the fakest". ........

Does anyone know about Zia's first declaration from Pakistan

I think - whether Zia was a proud Muktijoddhya or not can be judged from his actions, after the independence. He appointed Sah Azizur Rahman, a famous Razakar, as the first Prime Minister of Bangladesh. What does that say to you?

So, let's stop distorting the history using relentless propaganda, and let history assess him. He made so much history after the independence that it makes no difference if he was a Muktijoddhya or not.

Actually, the great humanist poet, Kazi Nazrul Islam, has been seriously abused in Bangladesh. A large segment of the Bangladeshi intelligentsia has tried to make him their Muslim poet.

The so-called secular and communist politicians of West Bengal were also too callous about this great soul. They allowed their truly humanist poet to be used, due to his disabled brain, by the Islamists of Bangladesh, led by the military dictator, Ziaur Rahman.

Out of those amazing poems some will be blasphemous in nature. I don't think Islamic clerics will like them. He wrote many more "Hindu" songs than Islamic songs. Orthodox Muslim society has its own justification to boycott or denounce him.
Have we not shown due respect to Nazrul? What else could be done? Any suggestions.

[mukto-mona] Fw: Democracy, Human Rights, Refugees: Labor Issues in Bangladesh

Labor Issues in Bangladesh

Testimony
Robert O. Blake, Jr.Assistant Secretary, Bureau of South and Central Asian Affairs
As-prepared statement to Senate Foreign Relations Committee
Washington, DC
June 6, 2013

Good morning. Thank you Chairman Menendez, Ranking Member Corker and all the members of the committee for this opportunity to speak with you today regarding labor issues in Bangladesh. I am honored to join Associate Deputy Undersecretary Biel this morning. Your interest and engagement will play a vital role as Bangladesh confronts important labor rights issues following the tragic Rana Plaza building collapse in April and the Tazreen Fashions fire last November. I have a longer statement that with your permission I will submit for the record.
Engagement on labor issues is part of our broad and expanding partnership with Bangladesh's government and people. Bangladesh works closely with us on all of the President's signature development initiatives in climate, health and food security, and in encouraging greater regional integration and connectivity. In the past two decades, Bangladesh has made remarkable development progress, in part because of the growth of its ready-made garment sector. Despite the benefits the industry has brought, however, the tragedies at Rana Plaza and Tazreen Fashions have made clear that significant challenges remain.
Our goal is to help Bangladesh continue to build on its economic achievements, but to do so in a way that ensures the growth of its export sector does not come at the expense of safe and healthy working conditions. We believe three key reforms are particularly important to improving labor rights and conditions in Bangladesh: guaranteeing workers' rights to organize, guaranteeing fire safety, and ensuring structural soundness of factories and other facilities.
Last month, Secretary Kerry underscored to Bangladeshi Foreign Minister Dipu Moni that the recent tragedies and weak progress on labor rights and safety had undermined the Bangladesh brand and placed the country's future development at risk. He urged Bangladesh to make transformative and sustainable improvements in workers' rights and working conditions. He pressed for further labor union registrations and the enactment of amendments to the labor law that will address freedom of association and worker safety. These changes would enable the International Labor Organization and the International Finance Corporation to launch a "Better Work" program for the garment industry in Bangladesh that would lead to still more improvements. We hope these changes will be enacted by Parliament before the end of this month.
Secretary Kerry's meeting with the Foreign Minister is only one of our many efforts to improve labor rights and workplace safety in Bangladesh. We are seeing some results: our advocacy helped lead to the registration of 27 trade unions since September 2012; the signing of a comprehensive fire safety plan; and a Bangladeshi commitment to dramatically increase the number of government labor inspectors.
We have also engaged U.S. companies sourcing from Bangladesh. On May 8, Special Representative for International Labor Affairs Barbara Shailor and I, along with colleagues from USTR and the Department of Labor, organized a conference call with U.S. buyers. We urged them to coordinate efforts with each other; to communicate their concerns about labor conditions to key officials in Bangladesh; and to provide assistance to independent safety and fire inspectors. We shared our "Best Practices for Companies Operating in Bangladesh," which I have submitted along with my written statement.
Bangladesh is now at a critical moment in its history. Last week Ambassador Mozena met with leaders in a recently formed union in the garment industry, one of the 27 new unions which have been registered since last fall that I mentioned earlier. These workers highlighted to the Ambassador their successful efforts, since forming the union, to improve factory floor conditions, such as obtaining potable water, a clean lunchroom, the removal of electrical hazards, and the unblocking of exit stairwells.
Their efforts show the potential for a broader sea change in Bangladesh's approach to labor issues. Still, much more work needs to be done. My hope is that Bangladesh will seize the current moment to strengthen labor rights and improve working conditions. This Administration wants to see Bangladesh succeed, and we will remain engaged with all the relevant actors, both here and overseas, to support those efforts.
Again, I very much appreciate your interest in this important issue, and I am happy to take your questions.

Madrasa system does not need improving; it needs to be dumped for humans to be what they deserve to be by dint of their natural intelligence.

The sponsors of Madrasas are generally not stupid enough to send their own children there. They know that parroting religion would not help their children. They want their own children to get a real education. Indeed, making money and/or recruiting cadres are two primary objectives of the religion-trading advocates of Madrasa education.

................................................

Madrasa system cannot be improved by the government alone. The whole Muslim society will also have to come forward. The role of the Ulema is critical here.

I am not sure how much the donation from oil rich Islamic countries influenced the education policy.

Let me shed light on the hypocrisy of the Islam pasand people. They never send their kids to madrasa although they constantly advocate for the system. They've vested interests in the system of various forms ranging from making money to recruiting cadres.

His love for his land and it's people was genuine and his love for non-Muslims was no less. His creative partner Sri Kamal Das Gupta was another talent that should be mentioned.

It is sad that, since Bangabandhu following governments have not done enough to recognize him or unite our religiously diverse community with his example.

Our leadership, intellectuals, politics are divisive and it is simply getting worse. My wordsmithing capacity is not rich enough to capture genious of Nazrul. He was one of a kind.
