"It is a very, very difficult project. It is a difficult task to arrive at a consensus among states. They [states] are reluctant to get into an immediate agreement on sharing of water. Also, water is a state subject and we cannot impose anything on anyone.

"But we try to take the concerned states on board. Wherever there is a possibility on those linkages, we try to take them on board," he told reporters.

He said that out of 30 possible links identified, five projects were flagged as priority projects.

"Out of those five projects, the detailed project report [DPR] of Ken-Betwa has been prepared. On others, there are talks between states. In one case, the chief ministers of Maharashtra and Gujarat states signed the MoU for preparing the DPR in the presence of the prime minister recently.... The government considers this to be an important thing," Bansal added.

Of the 30 possible links that were identified, 16 are in the Himalayan component and 14 are in the peninsular component.

Explaining the benefits of interlinking, which Bansal prefers to term transfer of water from surplus basins to deficit basins, the minister said the ultimate irrigation potential which can be created in the country is 140 million hectares, of which 110 million hectares have been created.

"If we are able to transfer water from surplus basins to deficit basins, then another 25 million hectares can be directly created in addition to 140 million hectares," he said, adding another 10 million hectares will be the result of improvement in ground water level.

Delhi assures Dhaka of discussion, continues to construct around 700 dams, many in line with river-linking project

Over the years India has been assuring Bangladesh of not making any unilateral decisions on its National River Linking Project but it is building around 700 dams on its rivers and many of them are for facilitating the mega project.

Experts say despite what India has been saying, it never stopped the implementation of the project. It went on with the projects that facilitate the mega project even though the matter was pending with Indian courts. The draft of its National Water Policy 2012 also encourages inter-basin transfer of water through river-linking.

According to the final report of World Commission on Dams (WCD) in 2000, an estimated 1,700 large dams were being built in the world and India accounted for 40 percent of those dams.

The report said out of the 45,000 large and small dams in the world, India has about 4,000, which makes it the fourth, after the USA, China and Japan, country to have that many dams.

A follow up report in 2010 named "WCD 2000+10" focused more on the lasting impacts of the report. It said countries such as India and China (which combined accounts for over half of the dams in the world) continues to reject "the report for the fear that it could bring dam construction to a halt".

No newer data was available at the World Commission on Dams website.

Many of the dams are on rivers that flow into Bangladesh.

Khalequzzaman, assistant prof of Lock Haven University of Pennsylvania, in his publication titled "Dams in NE India Implications for Bangladesh" published in 2006, mentions that India has built dams on at least 30 common rivers.

The dams and barrages India has built are causing problems in Bangladesh as its agriculture and environment is largely dependent on those rivers especially the Ganges and the Brahmaputra, experts said. The two rivers are threatened by India's controversial project, they said.

"If they divert water from the Brahmaputra, even Dhaka would be affected by salinity," said Ainun Nishat, vice-chancellor of Brac University. "Now the most important thing is to think about what we should do if India really implements the project," he said.

According to Ainun Nishat, it would be disastrous if India made barrages on the Brahmaputra and diverted water of the river, which is known as Jamuna in Bangladesh.

Interestingly, India continues to build dams putting Bangladesh in difficulty but objects to China's dam-building on the Brahmaputra.

Experts said India has been building dams which it would have built anyway during implementation of its river-linking project. They said the river-linking project would not work if those dams were not in place and that the building of these dams was part of the mega project.

India has been constructing a barrage on the Mechi river in Bihar state for the last few years to divert the water of the Teesta towards the west to Fulhar through Mahananda-Mechi, which is visible with Google Earth.

Retired hydrologist M Inamul Haq, chairman of environment organisation Water and Environment, said, "India has been running a hydroelectric plant near Fanshideowa using diverted water of the Teesta."

He said the water used in the plant is diverted from the Teesta before it enters Bangladesh.

India plans to divert a large portion of water form the Brahmaputra and the Ganges rivers through 30 canals, depriving and ignoring outcries of Bangladesh and some of its own states.

The drafts of the proposed National Water Policy 2012 says that with the current strategy of India, it can only use about 1,123 billion cubic metres of water out of 1,869 billion cubic metres available, if large inter-basin transfers are not made. It emphasises India's need for inter-basin water transfer, which could put Bangladesh in serious trouble.

The river-linking project was commissioned in 1982. Bangladesh has been opposing the plan since 2002 when the then Indian prime minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee formed a taskforce to get the project going.

The Indian Supreme Court has recently cleared the path for the implementation of the mega project. The court in its order said the central Indian government and the states concerned should participate for its "effective" implementation "in a time-bound manner".

Prior to the assurance of Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh last year, an Indian delegation in 2010 assured Bangladesh of not making any unilateral decisions on the Tipaimukh Dam and river-linking project during the Joint River Commission talks on the Teesta water-sharing deal.

Also in 2006 and 2005 India assured Bangladesh that it would not implement the river-linking project without discussion with Bangladesh.

KERALA OPPOSES RIVER LINKING
The Congress-led coalition government and CPI-M led opposition in southern Indian state of Kerala yesterday came out against the Supreme Court directive to the Indian central government for implementing the river-linking project, our correspondent in New Delhi reports.

Kerala Chief Minister Oommen Chandy said Kerala would not agree to the river-linking scheme as it was "harmful" for the state.

He, however, said the Indian apex court order was not applicable to Kerala and it was relevant only to those states that had agreed on the river-linking scheme.

We are deeply concerned

India's river-linking project warrants detailed clarification

In the wake of a time-bound Supreme Court order, India will now actively consider implementing the controversial project to link 30 of its rivers and divert the waters of Brahmaputra and Ganges to irrigate its southern and western regions.

We are taken aback by the court order and the manner in which the project has proceeded so far, completely ignoring Bangladesh, a co-riparian country with a vital stake in common rivers.

Sadly, we are now watching alarming developments on a matter that vitally affects our interest. At no stage of the process has Bangladesh been consulted, which runs counter to fundamental norms of good neighbourly relations and international custom of engaging with affected neighbours when diverting water that flows through more than one countries.

We would, therefore, emphatically urge India to come out with a full disclosure of its plans and engage Bangladesh and other states who share the common river basins.

As we understand, if implemented, the river-linking project will spell unprecedented ecological disaster for Bangladesh. Many rivers including Teesta will be severely affected, Rising salinity level will destroy farmlands, ground and surface water systems, the flora and fauna on either side of Padma and Meghna rivers affecting the livelihoods of some 30 million people. Existence of the world's largest mangrove forest, the Sundarbans, will also be under a grave threat

Given the enormity of the river linking project, it is clear that it will have a colossal impact on the ecology of the region and affect the lower riparian country tremendously. India cannot keep Bangladesh in the dark while it starts implementing this project.

We demand that all related studies and plans regarding those rivers that flow between our two countries be made available to us immediately. Let our experts study them and suggest ways to move forward on this project without harming our interest.

The spirit of good neighbourliness that now marks our bilateral relations demands the above. Ignoring our interest may prove disastrous for the future of our relations, as we had seen from the Farakka experience.

The Indian Supreme Court yesterday ordered the government to implement an ambitious project to link the major rivers of the region in a "time-bound manner".

The court also appointed a high-powered committee to plan and put into action the Rs 5,00,000 crore scheme.

The river-linking project was first devised in 1980 and has been under discussion ever since, reports BBC.

Bangladesh has been opposing the plan since 2002 as the then prime minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee formed a taskforce to get the project going against the backdrop of the acute drought that year.

Vajpayee then said the scheme would "free India from the curse of floods and droughts".

The project that aims to link 30 major rivers and divert the Ganges and the Brahmaputra rivers was also opposed by other neighbouring countries and environmentalists.

Bangladesh maintains that a diversion of water from these rivers will harm its interests while environmentalists say the project will cause an ecological disaster, BBC writes.

Ainun Nishat, a water expert, yesterday told The Daily Star the Bangladesh-India Joint Communiqué issued during Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's New Delhi visit in 2010 called for mutual understanding in managing the common rivers.

But the river link project was initiated without any consent of Bangladesh.

The diversion of the Brahmaputra will have a serious impact on Bangladesh that gets about two-thirds of its dry season water from the river, he added.

The Bangladesh Paribesh Andolon, an environment organisation, handed over a memorandum to Hasina last September when Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh visited Dhaka.

It expressed concern that under the river link plan the flows of the Brahmaputra and the Ganges will be redirected towards the southern and western parts of India, depriving Bangladesh of water.

The project requires the construction of large dams in India, Nepal and Bhutan, besides requiring international agreements with these countries.

Environmentalists say large dams would flood forests and cultivated areas, and cause compulsory resettlement of people, according to a BBC report.

The biodiversity of Bangladesh greatly depends on rivers. The country is already bearing the brunt of a diversion of water of the Ganges and Teesta rivers by India.

The taskforce that Vajpayee formed in October 2002 recommended dividing the project into Peninsular and Himalayan components.

The Peninsular component that involved rivers in southern India envisaged developing a "Southern Water Grid" with 16 linkages.

It included diversion of surplus water of Mahanadi and Godavari rivers to Pennar, Krishna, Vaigai and Cauvery rivers.

The taskforce also mooted a diversion of the rivers of Kerala and Karnataka to the east, and an interlinking of small rivers flowing along the west coast, south of Tapi and north of Mumbai and of the southern tributaries of Jamuna.

The Himalayan component envisaged building reservoirs on the Ganges and the Brahmaputra and their main tributaries in India and Nepal to conserve water during the monsoon for irrigation and hydro-power generation.

The taskforce had identified 14 links, including Kosi-Ghagra, Kosi-Mech, Ghagra-Jamuna, Gandak-Ganges, Jamuna-Rajasthan, Rajasthan-Sabarmati, Sarda-Jamuna, Farakka-Sundarbans, Brahmaputra-Ganges, Subernarekha-Mahanadi, and Ganges-Damodar-Subernarekha.

The taskforce said the linking of rivers in India would raise irrigation potential to 160 million hectares for all types of crops by 2050.

The project proposes linkages between the major rivers by the year 2016.

Yesterday, observing that the project had already been delayed, resulting in cost rise, a three-judge bench headed by Chief Justice SH Kapadia said the central Indian government and the states concerned should participate for its "effective" implementation "in a time-bound manner".

The bench appointed a high-powered committee comprising Indian water resources minister, its secretary, secretary of the Ministry of Environment and Forest (MoEF) and four experts appointed by water resources ministry, finance ministry, planning commission and MoEF.

Representatives from state governments, two social activists and senior lawyer Ranjit Kumar, who has been assisting the court in the case, will also be in the committee as members.

"Is there any outsider in this house?" asked one of them.It was around 12:45am yesterday at a five-room bachelor mess in Uttara, Dhaka. Mohammad Yeasin, an apparel merchandiser, was preparing for sleep in his room.Suddenly, he heard somebody banging on the door. As he opened the door, six to seven people walked in, woke up the residents and searched all the rooms.

The plainclothes officers carrying pistols and handcuffs ordered Yeasin and others not to allow any outsider in the house for the next two to three days. Then they left in a police van, a car and two bikes.Similar incidents took place in some other bachelor messes and also residential areas like Japan Garden City in Mohammadpur, sending waves of panic across the city.

Ultra-conscious and over-enthusiastic, police have stepped up their vigil for the last couple of days, saying they are working to prevent subversive activities centring the March 12 rally of BNP.The opposition called the rally to press home their demand for the caretaker government system.

Yesterday morning, Yeasin said, all the boarders gave names, professional details and mobile phone numbers to the house owner who needed those for submitting to Uttara Police Station."It was quite scary… the way the men searched and inquired us," he told The Daily Star. "Where will we go if we cannot be in peace even in our rooms?"

The situation in many city hotels is also not that different. Police are issuing threats to conduct sudden raids if their instructions are not followed. The hoteliers are not taking any new boarder; some even put on notice that reads, "No room available".

Police have orders to arrest suspected strangers from messes, hotels, residential buildings in the capital. They have to strictly monitor all the entry points so that no strangers can enter the city.Around 11:30am on Wednesday, two persons were harassed by police as they arrived at Jatrabari from Comilla.

One of the two, Mohammad Jasim, said law enforcers stopped them at Jatrabari intersection and without explaining the reason asked them to go back to Comilla.Finally, the duo managed to reach their destination in Old Dhaka after one of their acquaintances talked to police over the phone.

Around 10:30pm on Thursday, a team of six police men came to Japan Garden City, said a resident of Building No 11 at the housing project, wishing not to be named.They asked all the security guards to convey a message to the residents not to allow any "guests, especially males" till March 13. If any guest arrives, nearby Adabor Police Station must know it.

A similar instruction was passed to city hotels, pushing many to closure till March 12.

Yesterday, a notice was found at the gate of Hotel Midway International in the city's Paltan. It reads, "Due to unavoidable reason, the hotel will remain closed till March 12."

Some hoteliers told The Daily Star that they were asked not to receive any guest until the opposition's March 12 programme passes off."Because the boarders might carry arms," said a hotel manager at Farmgate, preferring anonymity.

A Naya Paltan hotel staff said they were refusing guests, saying the intelligence officials might raid any time looking for opposition leaders and activists.As a correspondent of The Daily Star approached a hotel in Rampura area to be a boarder, the manager said, "Please don't stay in a hotel, not even in a mess with friends. Try to stay at your relative's for the sake of your own security."

New Private Banks: Central bank gives in to political pressure

In the face of pressure from the government high-ups, the Bangladesh Bank is going to approve about a dozen new private banks against its will.The central bank has sent a list of 16 proposed banks to the Prime Minister's Office and finance ministry early this week for a "green signal," officials concerned have said.On getting the signal, the BB may give the go ahead to seven to nine banks. The number might be decided at the BB's board meeting on March 15.



When the issue came up last year, the central bank, the sole authority to approve new banks, was against the move. It said there was no need for more banks with 47 public, private and foreign banks already in operation in the country.

The BB eventually gave in to "political pressure" and sought applications for new banks in September, receiving 37 applications till November 30 last year. The BB board then unofficially decided not to approve more than three banks, the officials added.With time came more pressure, forcing the BB to make a big list.

Applicants for the new banks include former military ruler and Jatiya Party chief HM Ershad and Awami League lawmaker and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's nephew Fazle Noor Taposh.

As per rules, the BB holds the ultimate power to approve new banks. But in reality, it is now allowing banks by those enjoying blessings of the government high-ups, a number of officials told The Daily Star yesterday, requesting anonymity.

The central bank had faced tremendous pressure from the government high-ups to quickly approve those banks even before it could properly scrutinise the applications, they added.Normally, at least three committees of the central bank scrutinise the applications before giving the go ahead and the process takes at least six months.

But in this case, the BB is set to place the applications in its board meeting on March 15, only three months into the submission. However, a BB official claimed that the applications would go to the table on completion of all the formalities.In addition, the BB board on the day is likely to approve three banks by Non-resident Bangladeshis. Earlier the authorities had decided to allow one such bank.

Two of the three applicants could not produce their income tax certificates, but the matter was overlooked, a finance ministry official said.Since the 1980s, each of the three major political parties -- AL, BNP and JP -- during its rule allowed setting up of new banks. The AL during its previous term approved 13 new banks.

The International Monetary Fund and leading economists in the country oppose setting up of new banks at the moment. They argue that more banks in the already saturated market will set off an ill competition and worsen the current liquidity crisis.But the government says it still sees scopes for more banks given the size of the economy and growth in the export-import business.

গোলাম আযম ভাষাসৈনিক হলে ভাষাশহীদদের স্মরণে নির্মিত ঢাকার শহীদ মিনার বর্বরোচিতভাবে ভাঙার কাজে তার দল ১৯৭১ সালে পাকিস্তানি হানাদারদের সহায়তা ও সমর্থন জোগাতে পারত না। কামান দেগে শহীদ মিনারটি ভাঙার পরই জামায়াতিরা ওই ভগ্ন ও বিধ্বস্ত শহীদ মিনারে গিয়ে উপস্থিত হয় এবং শহীদ মিনারকে মসজিদ ঘোষণা করে সেখানে নামাজ পড়ার জন্য একত্র হতে শহরবাসীকে আমন্ত্রণ জানায়। শহীদ মিনারটিকে এভাবে শহীদ করার প্রয়াসের সময় গোলাম আযম কোথায় ছিলেন?



ঢাকার দৈনিক ইত্তেফাকের ২২ ফেব্রুয়ারির সংখ্যাটি লন্ডনে আমার হাতে দেরিতে এসেছে। তাই দুটি মজার খবর আমার চোখে দেরিতে পড়েছে। একটি খবর হলো, ঢাকা বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ের সাবেক ভাইস চ্যান্সেলর অধ্যাপক এম এমাজউদ্দীন আহমদ সাহেবের একটি প্রতিবাদপত্র; অন্যটি হলো, একুশে ফেব্রুয়ারির দুপুরে ঢাকার জাতীয় প্রেস ক্লাবে আন্তর্জাতিক মাতৃভাষা দিবস উপলক্ষে মহানগর জামায়াতের উদ্যোগে অনুষ্ঠিত আলোচনা সভায় প্রধান অতিথি হিসেবে জামায়াতের নায়েবে আমির অধ্যাপক একেএম নাজির আহমদের বক্তব্য। দু'জনেই উচ্চশিক্ষিত। কিন্তু তথ্য বিকৃতি বা বিস্মৃতির ক্ষেত্রে দেখলাম দু'জনেই দু'জনের পরিপূরক। তাদের একজন বিএনপি ঘরানার এবং অন্যজন জামায়াতি ঘরানার মানুষ।
অধ্যাপক এমাজউদ্দীন দৈনিক ইত্তেফাকে ২১ ফেব্রুয়ারি তারিখে তার বক্তব্য বলে যে কথা প্রকাশিত হয়েছে, তার প্রতিবাদ করে বলেছেন, 'যুদ্ধাপরাধের অভিযোগে গ্রেফতারকৃত গোলাম আযমকে ভাষাসৈনিক অভিহিত করে তার ওপর জুলুমের বিরুদ্ধে রুখে দাঁড়ানোর যে আহ্বান তিনি জানিয়েছেন বলে ইত্তেফাকের খবরে বলা হয়েছে, তা তিনি বলেননি। তবে তিনি গোলাম আযমকে ভাষাসৈনিক বলেছেন।'
কেন বলেছেন, তার ব্যাখ্যা এই প্রতিবাদপত্রে তিনি দিয়েছেন। বলেছেন, '১৯৪৮ সালের ২৭ নভেম্বর পাকিস্তানের তৎকালীন প্রধানমন্ত্রী লিয়াকত আলী খান পূর্ব পাকিস্তান সফরে আসেন। এই সময় গোলাম আযম ঢাকা বিশ্ববিদ্যালয় ছাত্র ইউনিয়ন বা ডাকসুর জিএস হিসেবে ছাত্রসমাজের পক্ষ থেকে মাতৃভাষা বাংলাকে পাকিস্তানের অন্যতম রাষ্ট্রভাষা করার দাবি সংক্রান্ত মানপত্র পাঠ করেন। এ জন্য তাকে আমি ভাষাসৈনিক হিসেবে অভিহিত করেছি।' অধ্যাপক সাহেবের এই বয়ানকে আমি কেন দুটি মজার খবরের একটি বলে অভিহিত করেছি, সে কথায় পরে আসছি। 
দ্বিতীয় মজার খবরটি হলো, জামায়াত কর্তৃক মাতৃভাষা দিবস উপলক্ষে আলোচনা সভা অনুষ্ঠান এবং তাতে প্রধান অতিথি অধ্যাপক নাজির আহমদের দেওয়া বক্তব্য। এই অধ্যাপক সাহেবও বলেছেন, '১৯৫২ সালের ভাষা আন্দোলন ছিল ভাষাগত মানবাধিকারের সংগ্রাম। আর সে আন্দোলনে যারা সক্রিয়ভাবে অংশগ্রহণ করেছিলেন, তাদের মধ্যে যারা এখনও জীবিত আছেন তাদেরই একজন হচ্ছেন জামায়াত নেতা অধ্যাপক গোলাম আযম।' ঢাকার জাতীয় প্রেস ক্লাবে জামায়াতের নায়েবে আমির সাহেব যখন এই বক্তব্য দিচ্ছিলেন, তখন আমি সেই সভায় হাজির থাকলে বলতাম, 'বাচ্চিয়া লোগ্, তালিয়া বাজাও।'
আগে এমাজউদ্দীন সাহেবের কথায় আসি। ১৯৪৮ সালের ২৭ নভেম্বর বাংলাকে অন্যতম রাষ্ট্রভাষা করার জন্য ঢাকার ছাত্র সমাজের দাবি প্রধানমন্ত্রী লিয়াকত আলীকে দেওয়া মানপত্রে উল্লেখ করা হয়েছিল বলে তিনি বলেছেন। গোলাম আযম ডাকসুর জিএস হিসেবে পদাধিকারবলে এই মানপত্রটি মাত্র পাঠ করেছিলেন। তাতেই এমাজউদ্দীন সাহেবের চোখে গোলাম আযম ভাষাসৈনিক হয়ে গেছেন। বিএনপি ঘরানার বুদ্ধিজীবী বা শিক্ষাবিদের চোখে তা হওয়াই স্বাভাবিক। কারণ, ১৯৭১ সালে তৎকালীন মেজর জিয়াউর রহমান কালুরঘাট বেতার ট্রান্সমিশন কেন্দ্র থেকে বঙ্গবন্ধুর স্বাধীনতার ঘোষণা মাত্র পাঠ করেই এই অধ্যাপক সাহেবদের কাছে 'স্বাধীনতার ঘোষণাকারী' হয়ে গেছেন। সেখানেও তাকে সেনাবাহিনীর একজন মেজর হিসেবে এই ঘোষণাটি পাঠ করার জন্য আওয়ামী লীগের স্থানীয় নেতারা এবং ওই বেতার কেন্দ্রের কর্মীরাই ডেকে নিয়ে গিয়েছিলেন। 
গোলাম আযমও ১৯৪৮ সালে ডাকসুর জিএস হিসেবে প্রধানমন্ত্রী লিয়াকত আলীকে দেওয়া মানপত্র পাঠ করতে গিয়েছিলেন। ভাষার দাবি জানাতে যাননি। ওই দাবিটিও গোলাম আযম নিজে মানপত্রে ঢোকাননি। ডাকসুর অন্য কর্মকর্তারা সরকারপন্থি ছাত্রদের বিরোধিতার মুখে মাত্র এক লাইনে ওই দাবিটি ঢোকাতে পেরেছিলেন।
ওই এক লাইনের দাবিটি কী ছিল বাংলাকে পাকিস্তানের অন্যতম রাষ্ট্র করার? তাও নয়, আমাদের অনেক প্রখ্যাত ভাষা-ইতিহাসবিদ ভুলে গেছেন, ১৯৪৮ সাল পর্যন্ত তৎকালীন পূর্ব পাকিস্তানে বাংলাকে দেশের অন্যতম রাষ্ট্রভাষা করার দাবিটি ওঠেনি। তখন দাবিটি ছিল, বাংলাকে প্রদেশের (পূর্ব পাকিস্তানের) সরকারি কাজকর্মের দাফতরিক ভাষা করা হোক। পাকিস্তানের দুই অংশেই উর্দু থাকবে লিঙ্গুয়া ফ্রাঙ্কা হিসেবে। অর্থাৎ বনামে দেশের কেন্দ্রীয় ভাষা। বাংলাকে তার সমমর্যাদার রাষ্ট্রীয় ভাষা করার দাবি তখনও ওঠেনি। পাকিস্তান হওয়ার পর বাংলাভাষা সম্পর্কে প্রাথমিক দাবি ছিল তাকে প্রদেশের সরকারি কাজকর্মের ভাষা করার। স্বায়ত্তশাসনের দাবি থেকে যেমন পূর্ণ স্বাধীনতার দাবি উত্থাপিত হয়, তেমনি বাংলাকে প্রাদেশিক ভাষা করার দাবি ধীরে ধীরে অন্যতম রাষ্ট্রভাষার দাবিতে পরিণত হয়। 
১৯৪৮ সালের ১১ সেপ্টেম্বর জিন্নাহ মারা যান। তখন পর্যন্ত দৈনিক আজাদ কলকাতা থেকে ঢাকায় স্থানান্তরিত হতে পারেনি। সম্ভবত পরের বছর হয়েছিল। তখন ঢাকার বংশাল রোড থেকে 'দৈনিক জিন্দেগী' নামে একটি পত্রিকা প্রকাশিত হতো। সম্পাদক ছিলেন এসএম বাবলুল হক ও কাজী আফসারউদ্দীন আহমদ। পাকিস্তান প্রতিষ্ঠার পর 'জিন্দেগীই' ঢাকা থেকে প্রকাশিত প্রথম দৈনিক সংবাদপত্র। 
এই জিন্দেগী পত্রিকায় লিয়াকত আলীর ঢাকা সফরের সময় তাকে দেওয়া ডাকসুর মানপত্রের কথা খবরে উল্লেখ করা হয়েছিল। তাতে মাত্র এক লাইনে প্রধানমন্ত্রীকে দেওয়া মানপত্রে ছাত্রসমাজ বাংলাকে প্রদেশের সরকারি কাজকর্মের ভাষা করার দাবি করেছে বলে উল্লেখ করা হয়। এই মানপত্রটি যদি আজ খুঁজে পাওয়া যেত, তাহলে আমাদের চক্ষু-কর্ণের বিবাদ দূর হতো। এটা স্পষ্ট হয়ে যেত, বাংলাকে ওই মানপত্রে অন্যতম রাষ্ট্রভাষা করার দাবি জানানো হয়নি। করা হয়েছিল প্রাদেশিক সরকারি কাজকর্মের ভাষা করার।
মানপত্রে এই এক লাইনের একটি দাবি পাঠ করে গোলাম আযম ভাষাসৈনিক হয়ে গেলেন? যেমন হয়েছিলেন জিয়াউর রহমান স্বাধীনতার ঘোষক। বাংলার ইতিহাসে এই জাতীয় কাকতালীয় ঘটনাগুলো মজার ব্যাপার ছাড়া আর কী হতে পারে? এবং যখন তা বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ের ভাইস চ্যান্সেলরের পদ একসময় অধিকার করেছিলেন, এমন ব্যক্তিদের মুখ থেকে বেরোয় তাকে ফবঢ়ষড়ৎধনষব সড়পশবৎু বা দুঃখজনক মশকরা ছাড়া আর কী বলা যেতে পারে?
পাকিস্তান প্রতিষ্ঠার বছর না ঘুরতেই পূর্ব পাকিস্তানে বাংলাভাষার আন্দোলন শুরু হয় মূলত ছাত্রদের দ্বারা। ঢাকার রেসকোর্সের ময়দানে জিন্নাহ কর্তৃক উর্দুকে একমাত্র রাষ্ট্রভাষা করার ঘোষণা এই আন্দোলনকে প্রকাশ্য রূপ দেয়। ছাত্র আন্দোলনের সামনে প্রাদেশিক মুসলিম লীগ সরকার নতি স্বীকার করে। তখন পূর্ব পাকিস্তানের মুখ্যমন্ত্রী ছিলেন খাজা নাজিমুদ্দীন। তিনি ছাত্র নেতাদের সঙ্গে একটি লিখিত চুক্তি করেন। তাতে বাংলাকে পূর্ব পাকিস্তানের প্রাদেশিক ভাষা করার জন্য প্রাদেশিক পরিষদে প্রস্তাব উত্থাপন ও তা পাস করানোর প্রতিশ্রুতি দেন। পরে তিনি এই ওয়াদা ভঙ্গ করেন।
এই পর্যায়ের ভাষা আন্দোলনেও জোরালো সমর্থন ছিল তমদ্দুন মজলিসের। জামায়াত ১৯৪৮ সাল থেকেই পূর্ব পাকিস্তানে রাজনৈতিক তৎপরতা শুরু করলেও ভাষা আন্দোলনে কখনও যুক্ত হয়নি। আর গোলাম আযম যখন লিয়াকত আলীর জন্য মানপত্রটি পাঠ করেন, তখনও তিনি জামায়াতের সঙ্গে যুক্ত হননি। ভাষা আন্দোলনের সামনের কাতারের নেতা ছিলেন আবদুল মতিন, কাজী গোলাম মাহবুব, শেখ মুজিবুর রহমান, অলি আহাদ, গাজীউল হক, মোহাম্মদ তোয়াহা প্রমুখ।
১৯৫২ সালের ২১ ফেব্রুয়ারির ঘটনার আগে পর্যন্ত ১৫ মার্চ ছিল ভাষা আন্দোলন দিবস। এই আন্দোলনে কাজী গোলাম মাহবুব, শেখ মুজিবুর রহমান, অলি আহাদ সকলকেই গ্রেফতার বরণ করতে হয়েছে। আবদুল মতিনকে হুলিয়া মাথায় করে আন্ডারগ্রাউন্ডেও পালিয়ে থাকতে হয়েছে। মুখ্যমন্ত্রী খাজা নাজিমুদ্দীনের কাছে বিশ্ববিদ্যালয় ছাত্রদের ভাষার দাবির স্মারকলিপি নিয়ে গিয়েছিলেন সলিমুল্লাহ হলের ছাত্র ইউনিয়নের তৎকালীন ভিপি আবদুর রহমান চৌধুরী (পরে বিচারপতি হয়েছিলেন)। তাকেও গ্রেফতার করা হয়েছিল। ভাষা আন্দোলনের এই প্রথম পর্যায়েও গোলাম আযমকে কোথাও দেখা যায়নি। তাকে গ্রেফতার হতে হয়নি। ভাষা আন্দোলনকারীদের সচিবালয় ঘেরাও বা রাজপথের মিছিলেও গোলাম আযমকে দেখা যায়নি। ১৫ মার্চের ভাষা দিবস উদযাপনের কোনো বছরের সভায় তাকে দেখা যায়নি। ভাষাসংগ্রাম কমিটিতেও (কেন্দ্রীয় অথবা ছাত্র কমিটি) তার নাম দেখা যায় না। একুশে ফেব্রুয়ারিতে আরোপিত ১৪৪ ধারা ভাঙার জন্য ভাষা আন্দোলন_ সংযুক্ত প্রবীণ ও নবীন নেতাদের কোনো গোপন ও প্রকাশ্য সভাতেই তাকে অংশ নিতে দেখা যায়নি। তাহলে তিনি ভাষাসৈনিক হলেন কীভাবে? কেবল ১৯৪৮ সালে লিয়াকত আলীর ঢাকা সফরের সময় এক্সিডেন্টলি একটি মানপত্র পাঠ দ্বারা ভাষাসংগ্রামী, ভাষাসৈনিক হয়ে গেলেন? ইতিহাস বিকৃতি এবং মিথ্যা দাবি করারও একটা সীমা থাকা দরকার।
একুশের মর্মান্তিক রক্তাক্ত ঘটনার পর ভাষাশহীদদের গায়েবানা জানাজা অনুষ্ঠিত হয় মেডিকেল কলেজের হোস্টেলের (বর্তমান শহীদ মিনার সংলগ্ন ব্যারাক ঘর) প্রাঙ্গণে। মওলানা ভাসানী তাতে ইমামতিত্ব করেন। ভাষা আন্দোলনের তৎকালীন অধিকাংশ নেতা তাতে যোগ দেন। এই জানাজা-পরবর্তী শোক মিছিলের অগ্রভাগ যখন সদরঘাটে পেঁৗছে গেছে, তখনও তার শেষের অংশ কার্জন হলের মোড়েই রয়ে গিয়েছিল। গোলাম আযম তখন কোথায় ছিলেন?
এরপর প্রতিবছর অমর একুশের স্মরণে ঢাকার রাস্তায় প্রভাতফেরি বেরিয়েছে। মওলানা ভাসানী, শেখ মুজিবুরসহ আন্দোলনের অধিকাংশ নেতাকে এই প্রভাতফেরির সামনের কাতারে দেখা গেছে। আজিমপুর গোরস্তানে গিয়ে তারা কয়েকজন শহীদের সমাধি জিয়ারত করেছেন। পুষ্পমাল্য অর্পণ করেছেন। ভাষা দিবসের এই দীর্ঘ ৬০ বছরের ইতিহাসে গোলাম আযমকে কখনও প্রভাতফেরিতে, শহীদদের গোরস্তানে অথবা মিছিলে দেখা গেছে কি? যুদ্ধের ময়দানে নেই। অথচ তিনি সবচেয়ে বড় যোদ্ধা। এমাজউদ্দীন ও নাজির আহমদ সাহেবের কথা শুনে হাসব, না কাঁদব?
এই মহান ভাষাসৈনিকের পরবর্তী ইতিহাস হচ্ছে, জামায়াতে যোগ দেওয়ার পর তিনি করাচি সফরে গিয়ে এক সভায় বলেন, 'তার জীবনের সবচেয়ে বড় ভুল হচ্ছে, বাংলাভাষার আন্দোলনে অল্প সময়ের জন্য হলেও সমর্থন দিতে যাওয়া। এ জন্য তিনি এখন অনুতপ্ত।' তার এই বক্তব্য সে সময় ঢাকার আজাদ এবং মর্নিং নিউজ দুটি কাগজেই ছাপা হয়েছিল। গোলাম আযম ঢাকায় ফিরলে তাকে জিজ্ঞাসা করা হয়েছিল, তিনি বাংলাকে অনৈসলামিক ভাষা মনে করেন কি-না? তিনি জবাব দেননি।
১৯৫৬ সালে পাকিস্তানের অন্যতম রাষ্ট্রভাষা হিসেবে বাংলাকে স্বীকৃতি দেওয়ার পরও এই ভাষার বিরুদ্ধে পাকিস্তানের শাসকদের ষড়যন্ত্র শেষ হয়নি। মুসলিম লীগ আমলে আরবি হরফে বাংলা লেখার প্রস্তাব দেওয়া হয়েছিল। আইয়ুব আমলে রোমান হরফে বাংলা লিখে রোমান বাংলা প্রবর্তনের চেষ্টা হয়েছিল। এই দুই ষড়যন্ত্রের সময়ই ড. শহীদুল্লাহ থেকে মুনীর চৌধুরী অর্থাৎ অধিকাংশ বুদ্ধিজীবী রুখে দাঁড়িয়েছিলেন। গণতান্ত্রিক রাজনৈতিক দল ও সাংস্কৃতিক সংগঠনগুলো এর বিরুদ্ধে জোর আন্দোলনে নেমেছে। গোলাম আযম ও জামায়াতের অবস্থান তখন কী ছিল? এই ভাষা রক্ষার ধারাবাহিক আন্দোলন ও সংগ্রামগুলোর কোনোটাতেই গোলাম আযমের প্রত্যক্ষ অথবা পরোক্ষ কোনো ভূমিকা কি ছিল? তার ও তার দলের ভূমিকা সবসময়ই কি বাঙালির সেক্যুলার ভাষা-সংস্কৃতির বিরোধিতাকারীর ভূমিকা ছিল না?
জামায়াতের নায়েবে আমির অধ্যাপক নাজির আহমদ বলেছেন, 'বায়ান্নর ভাষা আন্দোলন ছিল ভাষাগত মানবাধিকারের সংগ্রাম।' ভাষা আন্দোলনের আসল সংজ্ঞাটি এখানে কৌশলে ঢাকা দিতে চাচ্ছেন এই জামায়াতি অধ্যাপক। ভাষাসংগ্রামের সূচনা বাঙালির সাংস্কৃতিক ও রাজনৈতিক সত্তার অস্তিত্ব রক্ষা এবং তার অসাম্প্রদায়িক স্বাধীন জাতিসত্তা প্রতিষ্ঠার লক্ষ্যে। এই লক্ষ্যের মধ্যে মানবাধিকারের প্রশ্নটি তো রয়েছেই। এর কোনোটাতেই তো গোলাম আযম বা জামায়াত বিশ্বাস করে না। তাহলে মধ্যযুগীয় তালেবানি বিশ্বাস ছেড়ে তারা সেক্যুলার কালচার ও মানবাধিকারের সংগ্রামে সৈনিক ছিলেন দাবি করেন কীভাবে?
গোলাম আযম ভাষাসৈনিক হলে ভাষাশহীদদের স্মরণে নির্মিত ঢাকার শহীদ মিনার বর্বরোচিতভাবে ভাঙার কাজে তার দল ১৯৭১ সালে পাকিস্তানি হানাদারদের সহায়তা ও সমর্থন জোগাতে পারত না। কামান দেগে শহীদ মিনারটি ভাঙার পরই জামায়াতিরা ওই ভগ্ন ও বিধ্বস্ত শহীদ মিনারে গিয়ে উপস্থিত হয় এবং শহীদ মিনারকে মসজিদ ঘোষণা করে সেখানে নামাজ পড়ার জন্য একত্র হতে শহরবাসীকে আমন্ত্রণ জানায়। শহীদ মিনারটিকে এভাবে শহীদ করার প্রয়াসের সময় গোলাম আযম কোথায় ছিলেন? তিনি তখনকার গভর্নর হাউসে টিক্কা খান, রাও ফরমান আলিদের সঙ্গে বৈঠকে বসে বাংলাভাষা ও সংস্কৃতির আন্দোলনের সঙ্গে যুক্ত বুদ্ধিজীবীদের হত্যার তালিকা তৈরিতে ব্যস্ত ছিলেন। এহেন যুদ্ধাপরাধী এবং মানবতার জঘন্য শত্রুকে যদি ভাষাসৈনিক সাজাতে হয়, তাহলে বদরুদ্দীন উমরের দ্বারা ভাষা আন্দোলনের অন্য একটি ইতিহাস হয়তো লেখাতে হবে।

ভাষা আন্দোলন ও মুক্তিযুদ্ধ নিয়ে জামায়াতে ইসলামীর ভেলকিবাজি

বাংলাদেশে ইসলামী মৌলবাদী নামে পরিচিত জামায়াতে ইসলামী সংগঠন ও এর নেতাদের সঙ্গে আফগানিস্তানের তালেবান ও মধ্যপ্রাচ্যের ইসলামী মৌলবাদীদের একটা বড় পার্থক্য এই যে, শোষোক্তরা ধর্মীয় মৌলবাদী হিসেবে প্রতিক্রিয়াশীল হলেও তারা একটা দৃঢ় আদর্শগত ভিত্তির ওপর দাঁড়িয়ে আছে এবং এদিক দিয়ে তারা সৎ। কিন্তু বাংলাদেশে জামায়াতে ইসলামী এবং এদের মতো ধর্মীয় সংগঠনগুলোর সেরকম কোন দৃঢ় আদর্শ নেই। ঘোষিত আদর্শ অবশ্যই আছে, কিন্তু বাস্তবত সেরকম কিছু নেই। এরা সুবিধাবাদী এবং সে কারণে এদের দ্বারা অনেক কিছুই সম্ভব এবং অনেক কিছুই হয়ে থাকে যার ফলে বোঝা যায় যে, এরা সুবিধাবাদী এবং অসৎ। নিজেদের স্বার্থের কারণে এরা এমন সব কাজ করে থাকে যার সঙ্গে এদের ঘোষিত আদর্শগত অবস্খানের সম্পর্ক সামান্য অথবা নেই বললেই চলে।

এরা মিথ্যাবাদী। এদের মিথ্যাবাদিতা ও প্রতারক চরিত্র এরা নিজেরাই জনগণের কাছে এখন তুলে ধরছে ভাষা আন্দোলন এবং একাত্তরের মুক্তিযুদ্ধের সময় এদের নিজেদের ভূমিকা নিয়ে যে প্রচারণা এরা শুরু করেছে তার মধ্যে। বিষয়টি চরিত্রের দিক দিয়ে এত কদর্য যে এর উল্লেখ করা এক বড় সামাজিক ও রাজনৈতিক দায়িত্ব।

নব্বই দশকের প্রথমদিকে যখন যুদ্ধাপরাধী হিসেবে গোলাম আযমের শাস্তির দাবিতে জাহানারা ইমামের নেতৃত্বে আন্দোলন চলছিল, তখন ঢাকার দেয়ালে দেয়ালে গোলাম আযমকে 'ভাষাসৈনিক' হিসেবে আখ্যায়িত করে চিকা মারা হয়েছিল। সে সময় আমরা এর বিরুদ্ধে প্রতিবাদ করে এর মিথ্যা চরিত্র জনগণের কাছে তুলে ধরেছিলাম। আমরা বলেছিলাম, শুধু ইসলামের নাম নিয়ে এখন নিজেদের রাজনৈতিকভাবে রক্ষা করা সম্ভব না হওয়ার কারণে তারা ভাষা আন্দোলনের মতো একটি গণতান্ত্রিক ও ধর্মনিরপেক্ষ আন্দোলনে তাদের নিজেদের সম্পর্ক জাহির করে বাঁচার চেষ্টা করছে।

এ কাজ তারা এখন আবার নতুন করে শুরু করেছে। সম্প্রতি তারা 'ভাষা আন্দোলনের ইতিহাস' নামে একটি ভিডিও ক্যাসেট প্রকাশ করেছে। এতে সিডির কভারে লেখা আছে 'মাতৃভাষা বাংলা ভাষা খোদার সেরা দান'। সবকিছু ছেড়ে দিয়ে এরা এখন মাতৃভাষাকে খোদার 'সেরা দান' হিসেবে জনগণের কাছে উপস্খিত করার চেষ্টা করছে। এদের নেতাদের বক্তৃতায় এবং এদের সমগোত্রীর লোকদের ওয়াজের মধ্যে খোদার 'সেরা দান' বলে যেসব বিষয়ের উল্লেখ করা হয় তার সঙ্গে বাংলা ভাষার কোন সম্পর্ক থাকে না। এর কোন উল্লেখ করা হয় না।

যাই হোক, ক্যাসেটটিতে ভাষা আন্দোলনের ওপর কিছু কথাবার্তা থাকলেও বিশেষভাবে লক্ষণীয় হল জামায়াতে ইসলামীর নেতা গোলাম আযমের দু'দফা সাক্ষাৎকার, যাতে তিনি নিজেকে ভাষা আন্দোলনের একজন সক্রিয় নেতা হিসেবে জাহির করার চেষ্টা করেছেন। এই প্রচেষ্টা যে কত অসৎ ও হীন এর একটা প্রমাণ হচ্ছে, এ ক্যাসেট তৈরির সময় তথ্য সহায়তা যারা করেছেন তাদের মধ্যে আমার নাম উল্লেখ। এ কাজ করার উদ্দেশ্য যে এই প্রতারণাপূর্ণ ব্যাপারটির প্রামাণ্যতা নিশ্চিত করা এতে কোন সন্দেহ নেই। কিন্তু আমার তথ্য সরবরাহ করার বিষয়টি সর্বৈব মিথ্যা ছাড়া আর কিছুই নয়। এক বন্ধু ক্যাসেটটি দেখার জন্য আমাকে দেয়ার আগে এ বিষয়ে আমি কিছুই জানতাম না। ভাষা আন্দোলনে গোলাম আযমের ভূমিকা সম্পর্কে প্রচার কাজে আমি তথ্য দিয়ে জামায়াতে ইসলামীকে সহায়তা করেছি এটা প্রচার করা থেকে বড় ধৃষ্টতা আর কি হতে পারে? কতখানি নৈতিক অধ:পতন ঘটলে এ কাজ কোন ব্যক্তির পক্ষে সম্ভব, সেটা বলাই বাহুল্য।

আমি আমার ভাষা আন্দোলনের বইটির প্রথম খণ্ডে একবারই মাত্র গোলাম আযমের উল্লেখ করেছি। ১৯৪৮ সালের নভেম্বর মাসে পাকিস্তানের প্রধানমন্ত্রী লিয়াকত আলী খান পূর্ব পাকিস্তান সফরে আসেন। ২৭ নভেম্বর তিনি ঢাকা বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ের ছাত্রদের এক সমাবেশে ভাষণ দেন। সেখানে ঢাকা বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ের ছাত্র ইউনিয়নের পক্ষ থেকে তাকে একটি মানপত্র দিয়ে তাতে বাংলা ভাষাকে পাকিস্তানের অন্যতম রাষ্ট্রভাষা করার দাবি জানানো হয়। এ মানপত্রটি পাঠ করেন ইউনিয়নের তৎকালীন সেক্রেটারি গোলাম আযম। আসলে এটি পাঠ করার কথা ছিল ইউনিয়নের ভাইস প্রেসিডেন্ট অরবিন্দ বোসের। কিন্তু লিয়াকত আলীকে ভাষা আন্দোলনের দাবি সংবলিত মানপত্র পাঠ একজন হিন্দু ছাত্রকে দিয়ে করালে তার মনে বিরূপ প্রতিক্রিয়া হবে এবং মুসলিম লীগ সরকার এ নিয়ে নানা প্রকার বিরূপ প্রচার শুরু করবে­ এ আশংকা থেকেই একজন মুসলমান ছাত্র হিসেবে সেক্রেটারি গোলাম আযমকে সেটা পাঠ করতে দেয়া হয়েছিল। এই হল ভাষা আন্দোলনে গোলাম আযমের 'বিরাট' ভূমিকা।

যাই হোক, এ বিষয়টি আমি আমার ভাষা আন্দোলনের ওপর লেখা বইটিতে স্বাভাবিকভাবেই উল্লেখ করেছি। বইটি থেকে অন্যান্য তথ্যের মতো এ তথ্যও যে কোন লোক ব্যবহার করতে পারে। কিন্তু তার অর্থ এই নয় যে, আমি গোলাম আযমকে ভাষা আন্দোলনের একজন নায়ক হিসেবে উপস্খিত করার জন্য জামায়াতে ইসলামীর এই প্রতারণাপূর্ণ প্রচেষ্টার ক্ষেত্রে কোন তথ্য সহায়তা প্রদান করেছি। মানুষ হিসেবে এদের চরিত্র কত কলুষিত­ এই প্রতারণা তার এক প্রামাণ্য দৃষ্টান্ত।

এ তো গেল বিষয়টির একটি দিক। এর অন্যদিক হল, মহামান্য গোলাম আযম সাহেব ভাষা আন্দোলনে বীরত্বপূর্ণ ও নায়কোচিত ভূমিকা পালন করা সত্ত্বেও তাতে নিজের এই অংশগ্রহণকে সুবিধাবাদী কারণে অস্বীকার করতেও দ্বিধাবোধ করেননি। আজ নয়, পাকিস্তানি আমলে ১৯৭০ সালের জুন মাসে, পশ্চিম পাকিস্তানের শুক্কুর শহরে এক বক্তৃতা প্রসঙ্গে এই জামায়াত নেতা 'খোদার সেরা দান' বাংলা ভাষা ও ভাষা আন্দোলনের বিরোধিতা করতে গিয়ে বলেন, ১৯৫২ সালের ভাষা আন্দোলন এক মারাত্মক রাজনৈতিক ভুল এবং তিনি নিজে এই আন্দোলনের সঙ্গে জড়িত থাকার জন্য দু:খিত। গোলাম আযম ভাষা আন্দোলনের বিরুদ্ধে বিষোদগার করতে গিয়ে বলেন, উর্দু হচ্ছে এমন একটা ভাষা যার মাধ্যমে ইসলামী শিক্ষার উপযুক্ত প্রচার ও প্রসার সম্ভব। কারণ 'উর্দু পাক-ভারতীয় উপমহাদেশের মুসলমানদের সাধারণ ভাষা এবং এতে তাদের সাংস্কৃতিক ও ধর্মীয় সম্পদ সংরক্ষিত রয়েছে।' নিজের ভ্রান্ত ভূমিকা সম্পর্কে খেদোক্তি করতে গিয়ে গোলাম আযম আরও বলেন, বাংলা ভাষা আন্দোলন পাকিস্তান প্রতিষ্ঠার দৃষ্টিকোণ থেকে মোটেই সঠিক কাজ হয়নি। (দৈনিক আজাদ, ২০ জুন, ১৯৭০) শুক্কুরে দেয়া গোলাম আযমের এই বক্তৃতা পত্রিকায় প্রকাশের পর আমি আমার সম্পাদিত সাপ্তাহিক 'গণশক্তি' পত্রিকায় এর ওপর লিখেছিলাম। (২১.৬.১৯৭০) গোলাম আযম এসব কথা বলছিলেন এমন এক সময়ে যার অনেক আগে ভাষা আন্দোলনের দাবি অনুযায়ী ১৯৫৬ সালের পাকিস্তান সংবিধানে বাংলা অন্যতম রাষ্ট্রভাষা হিসেবে স্বীকৃত হয়েছিল।

দেখা যাচ্ছে, জামায়াত নেতা গোলাম আযম সাহেবের কথাবার্তার ভেল্কিবাজি ও নৈতিক অধ:পতনের তুলনা নেই। ভাষা আন্দোলনে তার অংশগ্রহণের কাহিনী, তারপর ১৯৭০ সালে তাতে অংশগ্রহণে দু:খ প্রকাশ ও ভাষা আন্দোলনকে বেঠিক কাজ হিসেবে আখ্যায়িত করা, ১৯৯২ সালে নিজেকে 'ভাষাসৈনিক' হিসেবে প্রচার করা এবং এখন আবার বাংলা ভাষাকে 'খোদার সেরা দান' হিসেবে গৌরবান্বিত করার জন্য মিথ্যায় পরিপূর্ণ ক্যাসেট বের করা­ সবই হল জামায়াতে ইসলামীর জাদুর খেলা। এর সঙ্গে যে প্রকৃত ইসলামী নৈতিকতার কোন সম্পর্ক নেই একথা বলাই বাহুল্য।

শুধু ভাষা আন্দোলনই নয়, ১৯৭১ সালের মুক্তিযুদ্ধ নিয়েও জামায়াতে ইসলামী এখন একটা জাদুর খেলা দেখাচ্ছে। ১৯৭১ সালে তারা স্বাধীনতা যুদ্ধের সম্পূর্ণ বিরোধিতা করে পাকিস্তান সামরিক বাহিনীর সঙ্গে নানা চক্রান্তে লিপ্ত ছিল। তারা সামরিক বাহিনীর সহায়ক শক্তি হিসেবে এমন ক্রিমিনাল কাজ নেই যা করেনি, ডিসেম্বর মাসে তারা এদেশের অনেক গুণী বুদ্ধিজীবীকে নির্মমভাবে হত্যা করেছিল। সে সময়ে এদের অপকীর্তি ও গণশত্রুতার শেষ নেই। অথচ এরাই এখন মাঠে নেমেছে নিজেদের একাত্তরের স্বাধীনতা যুদ্ধের সৈনিক হিসেবে প্রমাণ করার জন্য। এ উদ্দেশ্যে এরা কিছুসংখ্যক বেইমানকে দিয়ে গঠন করেছে এক মুক্তিযোদ্ধা সংসদ।

এই সংক্ষিপ্ত লেখা শেষ করার আগে এটা অবশ্যই বলা দরকার, জামায়াতে ইসলামী এখন 'বিশুদ্ধ ইসলামী লাইনের' বাইরে এসে ভাষা আন্দোলন ও স্বাধীনতা আন্দোলনে নিজেদের ভূমিকা প্রমাণ করার চেষ্টার মূল কারণ, ইসলাম দিয়ে এখন আর তাদের বড় বেশি সুবিধা হচ্ছে না। এজন্য এ দেশের প্রগতিশীল ও গণতান্ত্রিক আন্দোলনের সঙ্গে নিজেদের সম্পর্ক, মিথ্যার ভিত্তিতে হলেও প্রচার করে, এরা নিজেদের পায়ের নিচে মাটি খোঁজার চেষ্টা করছে। কিন্তু যে মাটি তাদের পায়ের তলায় নেই, সেটা খোঁজ করে কোন লাভ নেই। জামায়াতে ইসলামীর মতো প্রতিক্রিয়াশীল ধর্মীয় রাজনৈতিক দলের ভবিষ্যৎ বাংলাদেশে অনেক আগেই ঐতিহাসিকভাবে নির্ধারিত হয়ে গেছে

A Personal Quest to Clarify Bin Laden's Last Days Yields Vexing Accounts

In his quest for the truth about his country's most notorious guest, Shaukat Qadir started where it all ended: the room where Osama bin Laden was killed. Last August, Mr. Qadir, a retired Pakistani Army brigadier, retraced the steps of the American commandos who stormed through the corridors of Bin Laden's hide-out on May 2.

Climbing the stairs to the second floor, Mr. Qadir passed a body outline that marked the spot where Bin Laden's 22-year-old son, Khalid, was shot dead. Then he turned to a small room with a low ceiling, an empty wardrobe and a tight cluster of bullet holes in one wall, he said. Above that, on the ceiling, was a fading splash of blood that, his Pakistani intelligence escort told him, belonged to Bin Laden.

"As a former soldier, I was struck by how badly the house was defended," Mr. Qadir said in an interview. "No proper security measures, nothing high-tech — in fact, nothing like you would expect."

Mr. Qadir's quixotic investigation began as a personal attempt to truth-check the competing accounts of Bin Laden's last years in Pakistan. But his work has already come under scrutiny and criticism, mostly on the grounds that his heavy reliance on Pakistani military and intelligence sources leaves him open to official manipulation.

At the least, though, the end product — a novella-length report, still officially unpublished — offers tantalizing possibilities about Bin Laden's circumstances and the suspicions that drove relations between Pakistan and the United States to the brink.

For instance, Mr. Qadir claims that Bin Laden's fifth and youngest wife, Amal Ahmed al-Sadah, told Pakistani interrogators that her husband underwent a kidney transplant operation in 2002 — a claim that, if proven, could help explain how the ailing Saudi militant was able to survive with a known kidney ailment, but raises questions about who was helping him. He also heard of poisonous mistrust between Bin Laden's wives. In the cramped Abbottabad house, he was told, tensions erupted between Ms. Sadah, described as "the favored wife," and Khairiah Saber, an older woman who occupied a separate floor. In interrogation, Ms. Sadah accused her rival of having betrayed their husband to American intelligence.

Bin Laden's youngest wife also told interrogators that her husband shaved his beard and disguised himself as an ailing Pashtun elder as he leapfrogged between safe houses across northwestern Pakistan, eventually regrowing the beard after finally settling in the Abbottabad house in 2005.

In one sense, Mr. Qadir's work is an interesting entry in a decade-long parlor game among spies, soldiers and journalists, all guessing the whereabouts and condition of the world's most wanted fugitive.

Despite Bin Laden's death, many of the toughest questions remain. Who helped him stay on the run? How did the C.I.A. track him down? And, perhaps most important, did Pakistan's generals know he was living a stone's throw from their leading military academy?

Pakistan's government says the answers will come from an official commission of inquiry, led by a Supreme Court judge, that has been working since May. Yet few believe the Abbottabad Commission, as it is known, will succeed. And at times, the Pakistani government has seemed more interested in moving on than seeking answers: on the night of Feb. 25, the local authorities in Abbottabad sent bulldozers to demolish Bin Laden's house after nightfall, erasing a painful symbol of an embarrassing episode for the military.

Publication of the commission's findings, originally scheduled for December, has been repeatedly postponed, and critics of the government smell political pressure to tone down its findings.

Among those who have testified is Mr. Qadir, a 64-year-old former infantry commander. Suspicious of official explanations of Bin Laden's life and death, Mr. Qadir set out to find his own truth. He embarked on a sleuthing expedition that would last eight months and has left him $10,000 out of pocket. He traveled into the tribal belt and Afghanistan to interview old tribal contacts, and into the hushed headquarters of Pakistani military intelligence agency, the Inter-Services Intelligence Directorate, or ISI, in Islamabad, where officials provided briefings.

His army background was crucial: Gen. Ashfaq Parvez Kayani, Pakistan's top commander, approved two visits to Bin Laden's house; personal connections led to an interview with the ISI brigadier who had interrogated Bin Laden's three wives.

A former Obama administration official who read the report agreed with some of Mr. Qadir's findings, like a claim that Bin Laden and his deputy, Ayman al-Zawahri, suffered serious disagreements that led to Bin Laden's being pushed to the sidelines. "This divide grew with time, and remained a source of tension until the day Bin Laden died," the official said, speaking on the condition of anonymity. "His role had been diminished."

The official was puzzled by the account about Bin Laden's wives, saying that previous American intelligence reports had indicated that the first wife, Ms. Saber, was the closest to Bin Laden. The C.I.A. has since interrogated both women in Pakistan; Ms. Saber proved to be "defiant, difficult and refused to engage," the American official said.

Several of the conclusions that Mr. Qadir draws in his report are highly contentious, like a belief that Qaeda operatives betrayed their leader to earn America's reward money. "They wanted Bin Laden gone, and they wanted a share of the $25 million," he said. Peter Bergen, a terrorism analyst and author of a forthcoming book on Bin Laden's last years, called that a "ridiculous" notion.

Mr. Qadir's report was "larded with strange conspiracies," Mr. Bergen said, adding that it was indicative of a broader culture of conspiracy theories in Pakistan. "When I was in Abbottabad in July, plenty of people told me Bin Laden didn't live there. What do you say to that? It's so untethered from rational discourse," he said.

Mr. Qadir, for his part, concedes that his conclusions are based on conjecture, and admits that his ISI briefers may have concealed crucial facts. "I'd be a bloody fool if I didn't see that," he said. "I don't say this is the entire truth. But it's the closest you will get at this point in time."

Other Pakistani soldiers have also theorized about Bin Laden. Last fall Ziauddin Butt, a former ISI chief, reportedly told a conference that while he was in power, Pakistan's former military leader, Pervez Musharraf, had been covertly sheltering Bin Laden. Contacted by telephone, Mr. Butt said he had been misquoted but declined to elaborate. Another account that is popular on military message boards claims that Bin Laden was betrayed by a retired Pakistan spy, who has since fled abroad.

One question in particular has stayed at the heart of the mutual distrust between Pakistan and the United States: was the ISI incompetent in failing to spot Bin Laden under its nose, or complicit in his protection?

Muhammad Hanif, a popular Pakistani novelist, recently suggested that the answer was both; Mr. Bergen, the analyst, said it was neither. "Bin Laden was a hyper-paranoid guy who went to extreme lengths to hide himself. Don't forget that it took the U.S. government 10 years to find him, with huge resources at its disposal. And we had the will to look," he said.

Several American and Western officials, speaking in Washington and Pakistan on the condition of anonymity, said that the C.I.A. had scanned millions of documents taken from computer disks found in Bin Laden's house yet found no evidence of official Pakistani support. But for some analysts, that proves nothing.

"There is no smoking gun, but there is also no evidence that firmly rules out complicity," said Bruce Riedel, a former C.I.A. officer and Obama adviser.

The official verdict will come from the Abbottabad Commission, which on Wednesday heard testimony from the interior minister, Rehman Malik.

But many are skeptical about what will emerge, with at least one commission member having apparently already made up his mind.

Just a few weeks into the commission's deliberations last July, Nadeem Ahmed, a former general on the panel, told Australian journalists that he had firmly believed "that no intelligence organization in Pakistan would do such a stupid thing" as harbor Bin Laden.

Suggestions to the contrary were the product of an American news media conspiracy, he added. "There is a deliberate design to undermine the security establishment," he said.

With such high military and political stakes, many Pakistanis believe that the truth will remain as elusive as Bin Laden once was. "You have to ask the right questions to get the right answers," Mr. Qadir said. "I doubt this report will explain anything to anyone's satisfaction."

ঐতিহাসিক ৭ই মার্চ-এর গণর‌্যালি ও গণমিছিল থেকে ফিরে জনকণ্ঠের সপ্তাহের কলামটা লিখতে বসে ভাবছিলাম- কোত্থেকে-কিভাবে শুরু করব। আওয়ামী লীগের র‌্যালি এবং মিছিল; এটা বড় হবে, বিশাল হবে, স্মরণকালের বৃহত্তম হবে, এটাই স্বাভাবিক। রাজপথে আওয়ামী লীগের কোন বিকল্প নেই; যা আছে দুর্বল প্রতিদ্বন্দ্বী সব। এদের প্রতিহত করার জন্য এক মার্চ মাসই যথেষ্ট। একুশ মানে যেমন 'মাথা নত না করা' তেমনি ৭ই মার্চ মানে 'ষড়যন্ত্রকারীদের পরাভূত করা।' এবারের ৭ মার্চের গণর‌্যালি এবং গণমিছিল সেই বার্তাই দিয়ে গেল। 
৭ মার্চের স্মরণকালের বৃহত্তম গণর‌্যালি, গণসমাবেশের পর আসছে ১৪ মার্চ, মহাজোটের মহাসমাবেশ। মাঝখানে বিএনপি-জামায়াত জোটের ১২মার্চ 'চলো চলো ঢাকা চলো' পড়ে চ্যাপ্টা হয়ে যাবে সে রকম কিছু বলতে চাই না। একটা কথা অবশ্যই বলব যে, স্বাধীনতার অগ্নিঝরা একটি মাস, যে মাসের ৭ ও ২৬ মার্চের স্বাধীনতার ঘোষণা ছাড়াও ঐ সব ঐতিহাসিক দিনের জন্মদাতার জন্মদিনও ১৭ মার্চ, সে মাসে এ ধরনের একটি 'ঢাকা চলো'র কর্মসূচী দেয়া ঠিক হয়নি। কারণ গত বিজয়ের মাসে জাতি বোমাবাজি দেখেছে। 
তবে কি এ মাসেই যেহেতু জামায়াত-শিবির, রাজাকার-আলবদর-আলশামসরা হেরেছিল বলেই এভাবে বিশৃঙ্খলা সৃষ্টি করে প্রতিশোধ নিতে চান? চলো চলো ঢাকা চলোর নামে রাজধানীর কোথাও অবস্থান নিয়ে এমন এক পরিস্থিতির সৃষ্টি করবে যাতে করে বিচারের কাঠগড়া থেকে যুদ্ধাপরাধী গোলাম আযম-নিজামীদের বের করে আনা যায়। নইলে স্বাধীন দেশে বাস করবেন অথচ স্বাধীনতার মহান দিবসগুলোকে সম্মান দেবেন না; এমনটি হতে পারে না। নিহায়ত অকৃতজ্ঞ না হলে কেউ এমন কাজ করে?
একটা কথা খুবই স্পষ্ট যে, যুদ্ধাপরাধীদের বিচার হচ্ছে স্বাধীন দেশের স্বাধীন মানুষের দীর্ঘদিনের দাবির প্রতিফলন। বিগত নির্বাচনেও মহাজোটের অন্যতম প্রধান এজেন্ডা ছিল যুদ্ধাপরাধীদের বিচার, যার পক্ষে মানুষ আওয়ামী লীগ তথা মহাজোটকে নয়-দশমাংশ আসন দিয়েছে। বিশেষ করে তরুণ প্রজন্ম। আজকের তরুণরা জিয়া-এরশাদের মার্শাল 'ল' দেখে দেখে এবং খালেদা জিয়ার রাজাকার-আলবদর-আলশামস, যুদ্ধাপরাধী জামায়াত-শিবির তোষণ এবং জাতির জনক ও জাতীয় ৪ নেতার খুনীদের লালন-পালন দেখে দেখে আওয়ামী লীগ তথা মহাজোটকে ক্ষমতায় পাঠিয়েছে ওই অপশক্তির বিচার করার জন্য। এ বিচার যে হবে এটা দেশবাসী, আন্তর্জাতিক মানবাধিকার সংস্থা-সবাই জানে, বিশ্বাস করে। তাই তো তারা সেøাগান তুলেছে 'বঙ্গবন্ধুর বাংলায়-রাজাকারের ঠাঁই নাই, হবে না', 'যুদ্ধাপরাধীদের ফাঁসি চাই-দিতে হবে।'এই বিচারকার্য সম্পন্ন করা এখন মহাজোট সরকারের সাংবিধানিক কর্তব্য। 
'৭ মার্চ ঐতিহাসিক ভাষণ দিবস', ১৭ মার্চ জাতির জনক বঙ্গবন্ধুর জন্মদিবস', '২৬ মার্চ মহান স্বাধীনতা দিবস।' এই দিবসগুলো ছাড়াও এই মার্চ মাসের প্রথম দিন পাকি সামরিক জান্তা ইয়াহিয়া ৩ মার্চ আহূত পার্লামেন্ট অধিবেশন বাতিল করে দিয়েছিলেন, এ মাসেই স্বাধীন বাংলাদেশের পতাকা উত্তোলিত হয়েছিল, এ মাসেই স্বাধীনতার ইশতেহার (৩ তাং পল্টনে) পাঠ এবং জাতি বঙ্গবন্ধুকে 'জাতির জনক' হিসেবে ঘোষণা দিয়ে সম্মানিত করা হয়েছিল। আবার এ মাসেই বঙ্গবন্ধু-ভুট্টো আলোচনা, বঙ্গবন্ধু-ইয়াহিয়া বৈঠক; যা ছিল চক্রান্ত এবং ২৫ মার্চ রাতের আঁধারে সামরিক জান্তা 'অপারেশন সার্চলাইট' নাম দিয়ে গণহত্যা শুরু করেছিল। বঙ্গবন্ধুও তাঁর প্রস্তুতি চালিয়ে যাচ্ছিলেন। এমনি নানান ঘটনায় এ মার্চ মাসটির মতো ঘটনাবহুল মাস আর নেই। 
একাত্তরের মার্চ ছিল বিশ্ব ইতিহাসে সাড়া জাগানো একটি মাস। এ মাসেই বাংলা ও বাঙালীর অবিসংবাদিত নেতা শেখ মুজিবুর রহমানের ডাকে পালিত হয়েছিল অসহযোগ আন্দোলন। তখনও এ বাংলাদেশ ছিল পাকিস্তানের কাঠামোর মধ্যে এবং সেই কাঠামোর মধ্য থেকেই বাংলাদেশ চলেছে বঙ্গবন্ধুর কথায়। বঙ্গবন্ধু তাঁর ৩২ নম্বরের বাসভবন থেকে যা বলতেন তাই আইন হয়ে যেত। তাজউদ্দিন আহমদ যে বিবৃতি-বিজ্ঞপ্তি পাঠাতেন তা সরকারী পরিপত্রের (Circular) মতো মানা হতো। একটি মাত্র আঙ্গুল যা নির্দেশ দিত তাই বাংলার প্রতিটি মানুষ অক্ষরে অক্ষরে পালন করত দ্বিধা-দ্বন্দ্ব-ভয় তুচ্ছ করে। ভারতের জাতির পিতা মহাত্মা গান্ধীও অসহযোগ আন্দোলন করেছেন কিন্তু জাতির পিতা বঙ্গবন্ধুর অসহযোগ মহাত্মার অসহযোগকে ছাড়িয়ে এমন নতুন এক ভাষা দিয়েছিল; যা এর আগে পৃথিবীর কোন ডিকশনারিতে ছিল না, এখনও নেই। 
বঙ্গবন্ধু যখন বলেন:
" আমি পরিষ্কার অক্ষরে বলে দেবার চাই যে, আজ থেকে এই বাংলাদেশে কোর্ট, কাছারি, আদালত, ফৌজদারি, শিক্ষা প্রতিষ্ঠান অনির্দিষ্টকালের জন্য বন্ধ থাকবে। গরিবের যাতে কষ্ট না হয়, যাতে আমার মানুষ কষ্ট না করে, সে জন্য যে সমস্ত অন্যান্য জিনিসগুলো আছে সেগুলোর হরতাল কাল থেকে চলবে না। রিকশা-গরুর গাড়ি চলবে, রেল চলবে, লঞ্চ চলবে। শুধু সেক্রেটারিয়েট, সুপ্রীমকোর্ট, হাইকোর্ট, জজকোর্ট, সেমিগবর্নমেন্ট দফতর, ওয়াপদা; কোন কিছু চলবে না। ২৮ তাং কর্মচারীরা গিয়ে বেতন নিয়ে আসবেন।"
এই নির্দেশনার প্রতিটি অক্ষর সেদিন বাংলার মানুষ পবিত্র দায়িত্ব বলে পালন করেছেন। 
কি এক অমোঘ সম্মোহনী শক্তি ছিল অই অঙ্গুলি হেলনে- এত সুন্দরভাবে কেউ ডান হাতের আঙ্গুল তুলে কথা বলেছেন, বক্তৃতা করেছেন, মানুষকে দিকনির্দেশনা দিয়েছেন এবং মানুষ ঐশীবাণীর মতো পালন করেছেন; এমন নজিরও তো দেখলাম না। 
কবি নির্মলেন্দু গুণের ভাষায়:
"তখন পলকে দারুণ ঝলকে
তরীতে উঠিল জল,
হৃদয়ে লাগিল দোলা
জনসমুদ্রে জাগিল জোয়ার 
সকল দুয়ার খোলা। 
কে রোধে তাঁহার বজ্রকণ্ঠ বাণী?"
একজন মানুষ কি করে এত শক্তিধর হন আজও চোখ বন্ধ করে কল্পনা করলে হৃদয়ে দোলা লাগে। তিনি বলেছেন-
: সেক্রেটারিয়েট চলবে না ...
: চলেনি। 
: তিনি বলছেন-সুপ্রীমকোর্ট, হাইকোর্ট চলবে না ...
: চলেনি। 
: বলছেন-গরিবের যাতে কষ্ট না হয় সে জন্য রিকশা, গরুর গাড়ি 
চলবে...
: চলেছে। 
: বলছেন-রেল চলবে, লঞ্চ চলবে ....
: চলেছে। 
: বলছেন-২৮ তাং কর্মচারীরা গিয়ে বেতন নিয়ে আসবেন....
: বেতন নিয়ে এসেছেন। 
: বলছেন-পূর্ববাংলা থেকে কোন টাকা পশ্চিম পাকিস্তানে যাবে না ...
: যায়নি। 
: বলছেন-আমার কথা না শুনলে খাজনা-ট্যাক্স বন্ধ করে দেবেন....
: জনতা বন্ধ করে দিয়েছেন।
: বলছেন-রেডিও-টেলিভিশনে আমার কথা প্রচার না করলে কেউ সেখানে যাবেন না...
: কেউ যাননি। 
একটি মাত্র মানুষ যা বলছেন তাই অক্ষরে অক্ষরে পালিত হয়েছে। এর নজির কি বিশ্বের ইতিহাসে আছে?
গত শনিবারের কলামে আমি তিনটি প্রধান দিক তুলে ধরেছিলাম। যেমন রাজনৈতিক, সামরিক ও প্রশাসনিক-এই তিনটি দিক আলোচনা করেছিলাম। বিশেষ করে একজন মানুষ নিজের রাজনীতি ও জাতির আশা-আকাক্সক্ষা এবং নাগরিকদের যাতে কষ্ট না হয় সে জন্য প্রশাসন ঠিক রেখে এবং সামরিক জেনারেল না হয়েও কি করে স্বাধীনতার জন্য গেরিলা যুদ্ধের যথার্থ রূপরেখা দিলেন, ভাবলে কি অবাক লাগে না? এসব গত সংখ্যার কলামে বলেছিলাম কিন্তু লেখাটি ছাপা হবার পর মনে হলো অন্তত ২টি দিক আলোচনা করিনি। এ নিবন্ধে আমি তা তুলে ধরার চেষ্টা করব: 
১. পয়লা মার্চ ইয়াহিয়া ৩ তারিখের পার্লামেন্ট অধিবেশন বন্ধ করে দেয়ার পর বঙ্গবন্ধু ৩ তারিখেই হোটেল পূর্বাণীতে সাংবাদিক সম্মেলনে বলেছিলেন-৭ মার্চ রেসকোর্সের (বর্তমান সোহরাওয়ার্দী উদ্যান) জনসভায় পরবর্তী দিক নির্দেশনা দেবেন। সে মুহূর্ত থেকে ৭ কোটি মানুষের মধ্যে একটাই আলোচনা ছিল; তবে কি বঙ্গবন্ধু স্বাধীনতা ঘোষণা দেবেন? না-কি পাকিদের আরও সময় দেবেন? বিদেশীদের মধ্যেও এমনি নানানমুখী চিন্তাভাবনা ছিল। দেখা গেল বঙ্গবন্ধু স্বাধীনতার ঘোষণাও (Unilateral declaration of independence) দিলেন এই বলে "এবারের সংগ্রাম আমাদের মুক্তির সংগ্রাম, এবারের সংগ্রাম স্বাধীনতার সংগ্রাম'; আবার পাকি শাসন বা বহির্বিশ্বের বৈরী শক্তি যাতে তাঁকে বিচ্ছিন্নতাবাদী (Cessationist) হিসেবে দোষ দিতে না পারে সে জন্য পার্লামেন্টে যাবার জন্য ৪টি শর্ত জুড়ে দিলেন। যেমন তিনি বলেছেন 'এসেম্বলি কল' করেছেন, আমার দাবি মানতে হবে:
১. সামরিক আইন মার্শাল ল উয়িদড্র করতে হবে
২. সমস্ত সামরিক বাহিনীর লোকদের ব্যারাকে ফেরত যেতে হবে
৩. যেভাবে হত্যা করা হয়েছে তার তদন্ত করতে হবে 
৪. জনগণের প্রতিনিধিদের কাছে (১৯৭০-এর নির্বাচনে সংখ্যাগরিষ্ঠ দল আওয়ামী লীগ) ক্ষমতা হস্তান্তর করতে হবে। 
এভাবে বঙ্গবন্ধু সাপও মারলেন, লাঠিও ভাঙ্গল না। কেউ আর তাঁকে বিচ্ছিন্নতাবাদী বলতে পারল না, বলার কোন জায়গাই রাখলেন না। কারণ বঙ্গবন্ধুর সামনে একটি উদাহরণ ছিল যে, আফ্রিকার কোন একটি দেশে (সম্ভবত বায়াফ্রা) এমনি Unilateral declaration of independence দিয়ে পরে আর সামলাতে পারেনি এবং বিপ্লবীরা বিচ্ছিন্নতাবাদী হিসেবে চিহ্নিত হয়েছিলেন। 

দুই.

দ্বিতীয়ত যে বিষয়টি সবচে বেশি স্পর্শকাতর ছিল তা হলো বঙ্গবন্ধু বাঙালী জাতীয়তাবাদের ভিত্তিতে স্বাধীনতা আন্দোলন করেছেন। আগে থেকেই তিনি কোন্ কোন্ দেশে আমাদের যেতে হবে, কোথায়-কার কাছ থেকে কি কি সাহায্য পাওয়া যাবে, সবই বঙ্গবন্ধু ঠিক করে গিয়েছিলেন বলেই ইন্দিরা গান্ধীর মতো মহান নেত্রী আমাদের পাশে দাঁড়িয়েছিলেন। যেহেতু আন্দোলনটি ছিল বাঙালী জাতীয়তাবাদের ভিত্তিতে সেহেতু যাতে করে আরববিশ্ব বা কোন মুসলিম দেশ বলতে না পারে বঙ্গবন্ধুর মানুষরা অবাঙালীদের বা ভিন্ন সম্প্রদায়ের মানুষের ওপর নির্যাতন চালাচ্ছে। তাই তিনি বলেছেন: ''শোনেন, মনে রাখবেন, শত্রু বাহিনী ঢুকেছে, নিজেদের মধ্যে আত্মকলহ সৃষ্টি করবে, লুটতরাজ করবে। এই বাংলায় হিন্দু-মুসলমান, বাঙালী-অবাঙালী যাঁরা আছেন তাঁরা আমাদের ভাই। তাদের রক্ষার দায়িত্ব আমাদের ওপর; আমাদের যেন বদনাম না হয়।"
একটি কথার পুনরাবৃত্তি করতে চাই-এই ভাষণটি ছিল অলিখিত (extempore) অথচ মাত্র ১৯ মিনিটে ১০৯৫ শব্দে সবদিক রক্ষা করে একটি জাতির স্বাধীনতা ঘোষণা করা যায়, নিরস্ত্র জাতিকে এক অঙ্গুলি হেলনে (এত সুন্দরভাবে অঙ্গুলি হেলনেরও নজির নেই বিশ্বের রাজনৈতিক ইতিহাসে, অবশ্য এত সুন্দর (Handsome) পুরুষ মানুষও বিরল) সশস্ত্র জাতিতে রূপান্তরিত করে দুনিয়া কাঁপানো এক মুক্তিযুদ্ধে একটি শক্তিশালী সামরিক জান্তাকে পরাজিত করে বিজয় অর্জন করা যায়, এমন নজিরও কি আছে? যে মুক্তিযুদ্ধে ৩০ লাখ শহীদ, পৌনে ৩ লাখ মা-বোনের সম্ভ্রম ও জীবন উৎসর্গ করা, এক কোটি মানুষের ভারতে আশ্রয় গ্রহণ, দেশান্তরে ৪ কোটি মানুষের জীবন বাঁচানোর জন্য নিজ বাড়ি থেকে অন্যের বাড়িতে আশ্রয় গ্রহণ; এমন নজিরও কি আছে কোথাও? দ্বিতীয় মহাযুদ্ধেও এত লোক মারা হয়নি, আশ্রয় হারা হয়নি।
কেউ কেউ বঙ্গবন্ধুর ভাষণটিকে আমেরিকার প্রেসিডেন্ট আব্রাহাম লিংকনের গেটিসবার্গ ভাষণের (Gettysburg Address) সঙ্গে তুলনা করেন। আমি মনে করি, কোন তুলনাই চলে না। কেননা, 
: আব্রাহাম লিংকন ছিলেন আমেরিকার ১৬তম প্রেসিডেন্ট, তিনি তাঁর ভাষণটি দেন আমেরিকার স্বাধীনতার ৮৭ বছর পরে (fourscore and seven years ago our fathers brought forth on this continent, a new nation, conceived in liberty, and dedicated to the proposition that all men are created equal) অর্থাৎ তিনি একটি স্বাধীন রাষ্ট্রের সর্বময় ক্ষমতাধর রাষ্ট্রপতি হিসেবে স্বাধীন জাতির বিভিন্ন গোত্রের মধ্যে গৃহযুদ্ধ (Civil war) দমনের পর রাষ্ট্র পরিচালনার দিকনির্দেশনা দিচ্ছেন। তাঁর প্রতিপক্ষ কোন রাষ্ট্রশক্তি ছিল না। 
পক্ষান্তরে জাতির জনক বঙ্গবন্ধু তখনও কেবল একটি সংখ্যাগরিষ্ঠ দলের (১৯৭০-এর নির্বাচনে) নেতা এবং তাঁর মাথার ওপর রাষ্ট্রশক্তি; তাও আবার ভিন্নভাষী, ভিন্ন সংস্কৃতির সামরিক জান্তা। অর্থাৎ বঙ্গবন্ধু যখন 'এবারের সংগ্রাম আমাদের মুক্তির সংগ্রাম, এবারের সংগ্রাম স্বাধীনতার সংগ্রাম' বলে বলছেন " রক্ত যখন দিয়েছি, রক্ত আরো দেব, এদেশের মানুষকে মুক্ত করে ছাড়ব ইনশাল্লাহ-জয় বাংলা অর্থাৎ বাঙালীর জাতিরাষ্ট্র প্রতিষ্ঠার জন্য যুদ্ধ ঘোষণা। আর আব্রাহাম লিংকন একটি স্বাধীন জাতির রাষ্ট্র পরিচালনার মূল নীতি ঘোষণা করছেন That this nation, under God, shall have a new birth of freedom and that government of the people by the people for the people shall not perish from the earth". এই হচ্ছে একটি দেশের স্বাধীনতার ৮৭ বছর (Fourscore and seven years ago) পরে রাষ্ট্রের প্রেসিডেন্টের কথা। তবে ৮৭ বছর আগে-পরে হলেও একটা জায়গায় দু'জনের মিল পাওয়া যায়- আব্রাহাম লিংকন বলেছেন, and that ... shall not perish from the earth আর বঙ্গবন্ধু বলেছেন, ৭ কোটি মানুষকে (বাঙালী) দাবায়ে রাখতে পারবা না, ... আমরা যখন 'মরতে শিখেছি তখন কেউ আমাদের দাবায়ে রাখতে পারবে না।' 
এই ভাষণটি এতই বহুমাত্রিক যে, এর প্রতিটি শব্দই বিশ্লেষণের দাবি রাখে। ভবিষ্যতে সুযোগ পেলে আরও কিছু দিক আলোচনা করব। 
আজকের কলামটির ইতি এভাবে টানতে চাই যে, আমাদের বিরোধীদলীয় নেত্রী বেগম খালেদা জিয়া হয়ত সঙ্গত কারণেই এ ভাষণের মমার্থ, বহুমাত্রিকতা কিংবা দূরদৃষ্টি টার্গেট অনুধাবন করতে পারেননি বা পারছেন না, কিন্তু ইয়াজউদ্দীন-এমাজউদ্দীন কিংবা ব্যারিস্টারদের তো না বোঝার কথা নয়। বরং এই লোকগুলো তাঁকে নেত্রীর বদলে Madam বা সভাপতির বদলে Chairperson বলে যে তাঁকেই খাটো করছেন; তাও তিনি বোঝেন কিনা, জানি না। আশা করি তিনি বুঝবেন।
