Dr. Roy,

You have just made my point - conservatives do not want to break the
NORM of the society even if that NORM is unjust. We have a NORM in
Bangladeshi society which is wholly unjust towards to the minorities.
Conservative muslims are not really eager to break that norm - the
current status quo benefits them. So, being a conservative yourself
are you ok with these conservatives of Bangladesh?

Lest you start talking about the religious (social) conservatives vs
small government conservatives - US has both. Religious and social
conservatives in this country has tried to stop justice towards the
minorities most of the time.

Dr. Roy,

I believe you are generalizing the term "secular" even in the context
of USA. I know plenty of church going christians who are also
secularists - they do want to see separation of church and the state.

I don't have anything agaist these group - they have chosen to
renounce their religion - fine by me. But, understand, they have
reject not just the political Islam, but Islam as a whole (you don't
call yourself ex-muslim otherwise).

Being Hindu yourself, did you renounce your own faith? Are you against
religion in general or just Islam?

It is sad that we have such incidents in Bangladesh. Couple of points
though:

1) I don't quite agree with your definition of "Liberarlism". The
professor "x" in your example is certainly a spineless and unjust
person, but not a liberal.

2) Why did you call Rafiqul Islam Sarker a rational person? What did
he do that makes an Ameer of Jamati Islami a rational person? May be I
am missing something here?

Army HQ clarifies army chief's statement over martyred Indian soldiers

The army headquarters on Saturday termed false and fabricated some media reports and an editorial that the army chief during his India visit had stated that Bangladesh would show respects to the martyred Indian soldiers of 1971 on March 25 every year.

'As a matter of fact, during his India visit, the army chief didn't make any such statement formally or informally,' said an ISPR release.

It said that at different meetings during the visit, apart from the entourage of the army chief, the Bangladesh high commissioner to India was present.

'During the meeting of the two army chiefs, the Bangladesh army chief of staff recalled with respect India's cooperation and sacrifice during the country war of independence and expressed his gratitude,' the release said.

Referring to the reports published by Indian English daily The Hindu on February 26 and Bangladesh Today on February 27 and Sadeq Khan's editorial published in Daily Nayadiganta on March 7, the release said the army chief is well aware that there is no link of martyred Indian soldiers with March 25 and March 26. 'Therefore, such commitment is completely absurd,' it said.

It further noted that there was no journalist present at the army chief's meetings and exchange of opinions during the tour. So, there was no scope for collecting such information.

The ISPR said this is fabricated and false information, which was published with a motive. 'The army chief has never made such statement,' it said, adding that the army chief is completely aware of his jurisdiction and terms of reference.

*Dear Dr. Jiten Roy;*

Thank you. You have spelled my name wrong!! I understand, it has been
unintentional and typographical mistake; no big deal and no bone of
contention at all, please!!

Though it appears that we are in the same boat; yet I disagree with you on
that "in America most conservatives are usually not religious". Well, Pat
Robertson or Jerry Falwell are/were not only conservative with deep
religious convictions but there are so many of them around those are
politically conservative too. Also, not all non-religious people are
liberals! *Our religiously Conservative mother Theresa was the champion of
Liberal minds but still would have said "NO" to all your questions except
probably Number 2, I just guess!* What do you have in mind about that?

So, your "NO responses" to all 5 questions and my "NO responses" to at least
4 questions are NOT in the same page of music. Our common "NO responses"
have "un-common" roots and thus have come out from *"different ideals"*.
That is what I exactly wished to broach earlier; bringing the issues like
"Morality", "Right and Wrong" and those have pretty much nothing to do with
the religions in its real term but with the definition of Liberals and
Conservatives. I could easily claim myself to be a moderate and my truculent
oppositions against homosexuality, same sex marriages, abortion and
pornography are not meant to hate anyone or any group but only to be kind
and to recognize the laws of mother nature; as we usually do. I have also
doubted if many liberals shall come up clean when you ask them whether they
would ever abort their own child; and indeed they will surely say *"NO" *with
"superior and lengthy explanation" but still shall claim to be a proud
liberal. Obviously, this is their visible weakness as Liberals. Keeping
aside any or all religions; first of all, we need to and must *define
"Morality" and why "Morality" is all that important for human civilization.*
*The actual dilemma is exactly and only our "conflicts" over "definition of
Morality" that gives birth to Liberals, Conservatives, moderates and
extremists.

If indeed this change is construed as "positive" and if it is likely to be replicated across the USA, then it is likely to herald as big a decline in the USA as a nation as it is in that of the USSR during the dying years of the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan. Foster has been a part of the Daley cabal for a long time, a group that a few days ago raised sales taxes in Cook and surrounding counties to the highest in the country, prompting the Hammond Indiana Chamber of Commerce to thank Daley's bunch for their action because it is certain to drive business away from downtown Chicago to Hammond and Gary. Yes, Chicago residents may not drive to Gary or Hammond to avoid paying a $ 2.50 tax on a $ 10 sandwich when they have a snack, but on the whole, I would not be surprised if most of the large stores in the downtown area go bankrupt over the next few months.

Already, long before the current ridiculous 10.25% county sales tax, the historic Carson Pirie Scott store folded on State Street and Marshall Fields went under to be bought by Macy's, who, themselves, must be rueing their purchase of a sinking Chicago chain. White Hen has been bought by a California based investment group who have the same problems that Macy's have gotten themselves into. Nordstrom are likely to announce record losses in sales very shortly. And what is Foster's lot likely to do? Most probably, by this time next year, we would see even higher taxes.

A fantastic recipe indeed for progress in the future! With this trend continuing across the USA, if, indeed, this continues, I am sure everyone watching would soon see which way things are headed.

Dem. wins election to fill Hastert seat

CHICAGO - A longtime Republican district fell to the Democrats Saturday when a scientist snatched former House Speaker Dennis Hastert's congressional seat in a closely watched special election.

Democrat Bill Foster won 52 percent of the vote compared to 48 percent for Republican Jim Oberweis. With 564 of 568 precincts reporting, Foster had 50,947 votes to Oberweis' 46,125.

Foster's special election win means he will fill the remainder of Hastert's term, which ends in January. The two will square off again in November, for a new, full term.

The 66-year-old Hastert, who lost his powerful post as speaker when Democrats took control of Congress, resigned late last year.

The race between Foster and Oberweis spawned a contentious campaign that saw both men turn to high-profile supporters to help sway voters in the longtime GOP district.

Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama made a TV ad praising Foster; Oberweis had fundraising help from the apparent Republican nominee, John McCain, and Hastert's backing.

"It is a stunning rejection of the Bush Administration, its Republican allies, and presidential nominee John McCain," said Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee Chairman Chris Van Hollen in a statement.

The district will have a rookie congressmen after years of enjoying Hastert's clout.

During his 21 years in Washington, Hastert funneled millions of dollars to the district that stretches from Chicago's far western suburbs to almost the Mississippi River.

Hastert's is one of three open seats in Illinois this year because of GOP retirements.

Reps. Jerry Weller, who represents a district from the suburban sprawl south of Chicago to the farmland of central Illinois, and Ray LaHood of Peoria are also stepping down. Democrats' chances to pick up one of those seats improved when the Republican nominee to replace Weller dropped out of the race.

Besides poking at each other with negative TV ads, Foster and Oberweis have clashed on issues from immigration and health care to the Iraq war.

During a recent TV appearance, Foster said he would be a "good vote in Congress to change President Bush's policy" on Iraq. Oberweis contended the troop surge there was working, saying: "Things are getting better in Iraq."

Oberweis also has blasted Foster for being a proponent of big government because Foster says he wants to move toward universal health care. Foster claims Oberweis' approach — he favors tax incentives to help people buy their own insurance — only works for people who are "healthy and wealthy."

First off, a hearty welcome to this forum of "minorities"!
Unfortunately I'm not answered yet. Even after excluding liberals in
the context of Indo-Bangla, I'm still pondering--

1. Why Savage is so mad at liberals (in American sense)? Is it just
because most (or all) of them are non-believers of religion?

2. How'd you categorize, say, Spinoza in terms of his social-
political and religious beliefs: As a liberal, or as a conservative?
FYI, he was a panthiest and came from a Jewish descent.

Israeli Defense Minister Ehud Barak and Prime Minister Ehud Olmert in the Knesset. More than 100 Gazans were massacred by Israeli shelling and bombardments in the last few of days and the list grows every hour. In comparison to the murderous Olmert-Barak team, Ariel Sharon looks like a disciple of Mahatma Gandhi: the massacre of Jenin that provoked a huge international outrage in 2002, had far less victims measured next to the present Israeli aggression against Gaza. Nevertheless, the reaction of the international community is significantly milder than it was six years ago.

Why?

This question should be at the heart of the reflection of the international solidarity movement and, more generally, of the global resistance.

For, the Israeli war crimes are possible only because, in the last six to seven years, the international community has stopped putting any kind of pressure on the Israeli government; in fact, it is supporting it. This has not always been the case, at least with most of the European states, which used to oppose the "global-non-ending-preemptive-war" strategy of the US neoconservative administration, and to defend a strategy of global stability instead of the politics of global-chaos of Bush and his gang.

The rise of European neo-conservatism (French President Nicolas Sarkozy is an example of this phenomenon) is a new challenge for the solidarity movement, and more generally, for the anti-globalization movement throughout the world: the global-war strategy is no longer the monopoly of the US administration (supported by a few other countries, like Great Britain), but of the "international community" as such.

This is definitely a change that the Global Resistance should take into consideration very seriously: there is a world war and everyone is now part of it. Over and against an "international community" aligned with Washington's global war, a united international anti-war movement is becoming a burning priority.

What does this have to do with Gaza? Because today, Gaza is the frontline of the resistance to that offensive. If Gaza surrenders, Washington and Tel Aviv will feel free to launch a second round in Lebanon and to attack Iran. They know well that Gaza, Lebanon, Syria, Iraq and Afghanistan are different battles in one and the same war, and they are concentrating their forces in order to bring the surrender of Gaza, its people and its elected leadership. That understanding should penetrate the Global movement too, and bring it to one conclusion: the Palestinians of Gaza are fighting not only for their own rights and dignity, but for the freedom of all the peoples of the world; they are resisting the united leaders of Empire leaders and their attempt to transform the peoples of our planet into their slaves, including the working people in the industrialized metropoles.

No one in our camp, the camp of worldwide resistance to Empire, has the right to run away from the duty of total solidarity with the Resistance of Gaza, under the pretext of disliking the leadership that the Palestinian people of Gaza have chosen. The same should be said about the people of Iran.

At the core of the solidarity campaign with Gaza, one must call for a blockade on Israel as long as the blockade on Gaza is not lifted. An economic, political and cultural boycott of a state which has put itself, by its war crimes, outside the civilized world: until the bloody attacks on Gaza are not stopped and the siege lifted, the duty of decent people is to say, loud and clear: No relations whatsoever with the criminal State of Israel!

Dear progessor Ajoy Roy:

Thanks a lot for your concern about the way this debate on liberal
Democratic Party's nominee versus conservative Republican Party's
presumptive nominee in Mukto-mona.

You may recall that in 2004 U.S. presidential election many of us at
Mukto-mona had supported the candidacy of Senator John Kerry. Scores
of posts were made supporting the liberal candidate, John Kerry.
Some of our members who abhor Islamic countries had opined that
George W. Bush will teach the Muslim nations lessons of a life time.
Thus, they supported Mr. Bush.

In February 2008 a few of us wrote supporting the candidacy of
Senator Barack Obama over Senator Clinton who is liked by many
Bangladeshi Americans. When the debate over Obama versus Clinton was
at infancy, Mr. Sitangshu Guha entered the debate but his ad hominem
("appealing to personal considerations rather than to logic or
reason" - American heritage Dictionary) write-up really derailed the
debate. Before one could count three, the debate became "liberal
versus conservative" presidential candidates - who will be better for
America? To add fuel to the fire, one Dr. Jiten Roy from New York
City joined the debate as a surrogate for Mr. Guha. Dr. Roy posed 4-
5 criteria (he called them "questions") for Mukto-monas. Those were
his litmus tests for liberals or conservatives. Dr. Roy's ad hominem
write-up also brought a deluge of condemnation from quite a few
liberals.

Sometimes things get out of hand, no doubt. I hope the participants
would bring objectivity to this debate. The moderators have a role
to play but I hardly think that anyone has grossly misbehaved. Under
these circumstances would it be wise to call the debate off?

We are all grownups here in Mukto-mona. As long as we maintain
decorum and savoir fare, this debate between liberals and
conservatives should continue.

All oppression starts when the other party is economically and fiscally weak. Our lofty dream of emancipation for women will only be a reality if they are educated and economically viable in the society. Although Jesus was born in Nazareth but Christianity thrived in Europe and the Industrial Revolution took place in Europe which brought prosperity for all. The Christianity is very much related to Jesus but not related to the Middle Eastern culture. Therefore whoever accepted Christianity did not go through any predominant cultural exercise as the converted Muslims went through. A vicious dogmatic approach is necessary to become a Muslim which imprisons the free thinking process. Muhammad's Islam was not for the entire world as it's claimed by the overenthusiastic Islamic preachers. Muhammad was sent for the people of Mecca and its vicinity. Therefore the philosophy of Muhammad was entirely based on Arab culture and it was very normal and logical. But when Islam was transported to the non Arabs it accompanied the essence of Arabian cultural notions. The spirit of Islam was enveloped in 7^th century Arab culture and the converts were brainwashed and frightened to accept it as it was brought to them as fear is an essential ingredient of this faith. This is the potent poison of cultural Islam which has brought conflict in many societies.

This oppression on women in Islam has been compounded by many factors such as lack of education, poverty and above all a religious undertone. The situation is not going improve unless the society is enlightened enough to understand the essentials of the individual human rights and it's going to take time. Like any other thought process Islam is also one of them and we must not shy away from criticizing its flaws. There is no heaven and therefore nothing comes from the heavens. If we can change a national constitution we can also bring changes to a religion. The stupid claim that Islam is a complete code of life is completely an ignorant notion. In the ever changing vistas of life no religion can be accepted as a complete code of life.

In Mukto Mona we have the high audacity to claim freedom from the religious dogmas. We are at war with anyone who professes regimentation of the ever free human spirit. Let the mullahs and the dogmatists who are lured by the lies of eternal life in the so called heavens with multiple women enjoy their foolishness. Let them call us heretics, infidels and murtaads but we don't worship darkness and know the value of freedom.
