Re: [ALOCHONA] to Matahir of BD

Mr. Zaman,

What is  it that  assure you that if the two ladies are out from bd politics, there  will have no such evil things that you mentioned?

The two ladies have become more powerful  in their respective parties due to the wrong  reform and  anti-corruption  drive worse than that of ershad.

The more  the CTG will remain in power, the more it will make people understand that the two ladies are better than this helper run, civils supported CTG due to double standard in anti corruption drive (release of  minto, lito, no measure against ershad and so on) and failure in many sectors such as relief distribution, price control, employment generation, bussiness running etc, fertilizer distribution  and what not ?????????????????

And an early election can prevent the  100% take over by Army.

And after coming to bd , from Bussiness man and civil servent friends, i came to know that army  has started corruption and they are wasting  government money more than the political governments. But none can speak out  of their misdeeds.

Te Sooner this CTG goes , the better it is for bangladesh.

WHAT IS YOUR VISION for preventing such entropy?
And, please, tell me how you plant to prevent a 100% military takeover?

[mukto-mona] Crying for help: 350 families did not receive any relief two weeks after Cyclone SIRD destroyed their belonging in Chandipur village, Chingrikhali union, Moralganj upazila, Bagerhat district

Bangladesh

About 350 families did not receive any relief two weeks after Cyclone SIRD destroyed their belongings.

It was very heart breaking to read the story published in Weekly Jai Jai Din on Dec 3rd that the population (350 families) of entire village is yet to receive any food or other relief since Cyclone SIDR destroyed their livelihood on Nov 16th, 2007.

Place: Chandipur Village, Chingrikhali Union, Moralganj Upazila, Bagerhat District

About 350 families did not receive any relief two weeks after Cyclone SIRD destroyed their belongings. The story was heart breaking, people are dying for food and the chairman of the Union Parisad Mr. Maulana Abul Kashem deprived them of food because they did not vote for him. This just one incident being reported but there are many more Chandipur gone unreported hence we don’t know and we are unable to render help. I would urge people like Mr. Kashem, please, please don’t do vote politics when your own people are dying. See the news at –
http://hrcbmdfw.org/blogs/bangladesh/archive/2007/12/04/795.aspx

Upon reading the story I called Cornell Asif (my apology, I did not get the last name) at his cell phone number 011-880-1711883397 and appraised him of the situation. He did not waste time to counter the news report. So, we were able to get to the point quickly. He took note of the village and assured me he will take immediate action to send help to Chandipur. I mentioned that we can only send funds for the victims from abroad but you are in a position to directly help them. I promised to call him back in next couple of days to inquire the situation again and he thanked me for pointing the incident.

I think of this (Care Taker) movement being the most free of corruption as compared to all past governments and I, therefore, have high hope from this government. I call upon the government of Dr. Fakhruddin Ahmed to help distribute the relief materials irrespective of caste, creed and religion. I call upon the civil society to come forward to help the SIDR victims. If you see news like this, please call Cornell Asif and bring it to his attention. Please don’t remain silent spectator.

[mukto-mona] All false propaganda against Maoists

Some of you believe I am pathologically opposed to CPI(M).My point is simple. I hate its ideological hypocrisy from Karats to Buddha and deliberate lies, let alone intolerance to dissent.

Half a dozen of CPI(ML) Lib hoardings for its ensuing party congress in Kolkata were pulled down.

Let me quote two CPI(Maoist) circulars, proving CPM's Goebblesian trait.
Sankar Ray

A press release by the West Bengal CPI(Maoist) the day Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee and the police spread the news of discovery of landmines, detonators, .303 rifles, issued under the take name Somen:
"Lumpen CPM 0 tader petoa police adha-samorik bahini Nandigramer bibhinno jayga theke landmine, .303 rifle, detonator ityadi udhdharer gawppo bawlar sange sange bhul Hindite lekha Maobadider poster nijerai lagiye bajare gujawb chherechhe ( ja kichhu bajari sangbadpatre beriyechhe). Ajke ora oder khun-dharshan-lutpat prabhriti kukarmer ajuhat hishabe bohiragawto Maobadider uposthitike proman kawrar chesta chalachchhe. Hay CPM" ( Free translation:The lumpen CPM and its mendicant police- paramilitary forces have in different places of Nandigram been spreading cock and bull stories about recovery of landmines, .303 rifles, detonators etc and spreading rumours by pasting posters in erroneous Hindi in the name of Maoists – carried in some market-savvy dailies today). Today they are trying to cover up their misdeeds like  killings, rape and lootings as alibi for proving that outsider Maoists were present there).

Another press release by the CPI(Maoist) Bengal-Jharkhand-Oriisa regional committee by Rakesh: " Assassination of Balarampur local committee member, Purulia district, Sufal Mandi, raid on Bhulabheda (Belpahari) and Baita (Lalgarh) panchayat offices and blowing off of rails at Birbhum are symbolic protests against genocide by the police, administration and CPM 'harmads' (Eng translation)

[mukto-mona] A case against me

Dear members and well-wishers,
Assalamu Alaikum.
As I am receiving lot of calls from worried friends and well-wishers about the case filed against me along with others, I  can only say about myself that every single statement made by the complainant against me is false and without any basis.I have left everything to Allah .My lawyers are taking normal steps in my matter,

Please see the news item below and see the role of Daily Star. This is the paper which  made a big news of the talk  show of a channel and made a provocative headline. They also published two articles against me by  Syed Muhammad Ibrahim and Syed Badrul Ahsan. My polite rejinders have not been published though I reminded the editor by drawing his attention by name.I give below my rejoinder of the article of Mr.Ibrahim.What kind of fairness is this?

The  un-proved (in any court of law )insinuations made in the news item of the daily of its own volition shows the daily's  bias.

Subject: On the article of Syed Muhammad Ibrahim

To the Editor,

The Daily Star, Dhaka.

Dear Mr Editor,
Assalamu Alaikum. I have been dismayed by the article of Syed Muhammad Ibrahim, "Well Said Your Honour " published in your esteemed daily on 29.10.07. There is no truth in his statement  quote At about 9.30 p.m. on Friday, October 26, in a television talk show on Ekushey TV titled Ekushey Shomoy, Mr. Shah Abdul Hannan a former secretary to the government of Bangladesh said that there was no Liberation War of Bangladesh, instead what happened in 1971 was civil war in Pakistan unquote

I have never said that 1971 was not Mukti Juddho ( war of liberation) instead it was a civil war. This is a serious manipulqation of my statement in the talk show where I did not go on my own liking. I was invited there.I was supposed to join in a discussion on current affairs.Insted I was asked questions about mostly on 1971 events. In a live talk show I had no option except answering questions asked from me from the anchor person, Mr Shariar Kabir and three journalists.I clearly said that in 1971 there was a civil war and and a MuktiJuddho ( please refer your own report on the first page on 28.10.07).In view of that the aricle of Syed Muhammad Ibrahim stands on false leg and I need not discuss other issues.

However i am replying to his direct question he posed to  me . quote May I ask a question to xxxxxx and  Mr. Shah Abdul Hannan: "Pakistan government in 1971 used to say that the situation in East Pakistan in 1971 was an internal law and order problem. In 2007 Mr. Shah Abdul Hannan says it was a civil war. Question: Was Bangladesh born because of political struggle alone or because of the recommendations of politicians only?"Unquote Any body may see my stance  from the website of Ekushey television or report of the daily star or from a c.d. obtained from the Ekushe.I must however add  as a student of political science that even though 26 th March was the  date  of declaration of independence of Bangladesh, the political sovereignty of Bangladesh over the territory was established on 16th December, 1971with all its legal consequences in domestic and international law..

Respected editor, please publish it without delay.

Shah Abdul Hannan

A sedition case was filed with a Dhaka court yesterday against Jamaat-e-Islami Secretary General Ali Ahsan Mohammad Mojaheed, Assistant Secretary General Abdul Quader Mollah and ex-chairman of Islami Bank Shah Md Abdul Hannan.

The court ordered Tejgaon Police Station to register it as a regular case filed against the three for their anti-liberation activities.

In the petition case filed with the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate's Court, petitioner Mohammad Fazlur Rahman also appealed to the court to issue arrest warrant against the three accused.

After hearing the petition, Metropolitan Magistrate Mohammad Emran Hossain Chowdhury passed the order to Tejgaon police and directed the officer-in-charge (OC) to submit a report after proper investigation into the matter.

The accused worked against the Liberation War and carried out massacres by forming Al Badr, Al Shams and Razakar forces in 1971. Thus they committed sedition, the case statement said.

Moreover, the accused recently started making fresh derogatory remarks on the Liberation War by terming it a civil war, and denying the existence of anti-liberation forces.

"I have been compelled to take refuge of the law since the state, Ministry of Liberation War Affairs, home ministry and freedom fighters' organisations have not taken any legal action against the war criminals," said complainant Fazlur Rahman, a freedom fighter of Sector-2.

The case statement mentioned that Mojaheed, who was the social welfare minister of the BNP-Jamaat-led four-party coalition government, on October 25 denied his party's anti-liberation role, and claimed that anti-liberation forces never existed in the country. On the next day, Hannan, also a former chairman of the National Board Revenue, in a private satellite television talk show termed the Liberation War a 'civil war' and made derogatory remarks on it.

Quader Mollah at a discussion on October 31 said the freedom fighters joined the Liberation War being allured by beautiful Indian women, and for grabbing property of the Hindus in the country. Three criminal cases including one for sedition were filed against Quader with a Madaripur court for his derogative remarks.

By denying the Liberation War, they have committed sedition, the complaint said. "We will have to bear the shame forever if these criminals are not punished for their heinous crimes," argued Fazlur, a resident of south Kamerkanda in Keraniganj.

He filed the case under sections 121-A and 123 - A of Bangladesh Penal Code. The sections deal with the sedition charges and punishment for committing such offences.

Section 121-A says whoever within or without Bangladesh conspires to commit any of the offences to deprive Bangladesh of the sovereignty of her territories or any part thereof, or conspires to overawe by means of criminal force or the show of criminal force, the government, shall be punished with imprisonment for life or any shorter term.

In the case, the complaint made the editor and news editor of the Prothom Alo and editor the Bhorer Kagoj as witnesses.

When contacted last night, Tejgaon police said they are yet to get copy of the sedition case filed with court.

According to newspaper reports, speeches and statements of those accused of war crimes, and findings of different probe bodies including the People's Enquiry Commission, Mojaheed, who was president of the then East Pakistan Islami Chhatra Sangha and chief of the infamous Al Badr Bahini back in 1971, helped the occupation Pakistan army commit massacre, loot and rape.

Only two days before the Liberation War ended, he led the killings of renowned academics, litterateurs, doctors, engineers, journalists and other eminent personalities to leave the nation intellectually crippled.

Quader Molla was known as a 'butcher' to Bangalees in Mirpur of Dhaka in 1971. Mirpur at the time was mainly populated by non-Bangalee Muslim migrants from India, many of whom actively collaborated with the occupation army.

One of the largest mass graves of people butchered by Pakistani troops and their lackeys was discovered in Shialbari area of Mirpur after the independence. Quader was behind the killing of thousands of Bangalees in Shialbari and Rupnagar areas of Mirpur in 1971. He had started killing people even before the occupation army's mass killing, local people said.

Jamaat was constitutionally banned for its anti-liberation activities. But the ban was lifted in 1976.

[mukto-mona] An interesting opinion piece

The Great Left Debate: Chomsky to Saddam, Iraq to Nandigram By Subrata nagchoudhury & Somnath Dasgupta 5 Dec 07 (http://www.indianexpress.com/story/246969.html)
Nandigram drives a wedge in cyberspace, on Kolkata streets as all jump in — Ramsey Clark to Mahashweta to fence-sitters

KOLKATA, DECEMBER 4: What will Noam Chomsky say now? Will Arundhati Roy's outrage be dimmed? Today, when West Bengal Chief Minister finally regretted his us-and-them remarks on Nandigram, could he have done enough to begin to heal the rift between buddhi-jibis (Bengali for intellectuals) and Buddha-jibis (those loyal to West Bengal Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee)?
The streets of Kolkata and cyberspace have been crackling with a confrontation amongst the Left sparked off by the events at Nandigram. Statements and counter-statements had been flying so thick and fast that a split even loomed over the Fourth Internationalist.
Consider the dimensions of the confrontation. Former Viswa Bharati Vice-Chancellor and painter Shuvaprasanna use the word "fascist" for Buddhadeb's government. Aparna Sen, who absented herself from the Kolkata film festival, says, "I could not bring myself to be associated with it after the renewed spate of violence in Nandigram."
But actor Saumitra Chatterjee counters: "Those who had been evicted have got back to their homes by cunning, strength and manipulation (chale, bole and koushole). What is wrong in that? They (referring to intellectuals who had condemned the CPM's role in Nandigram) are not "buddhijibi" (intellectuals) but "buddhujibi" (dim witted)."
Then there are those sitting on the fence. Filmmaker Gautam Ghose, who attended both the pro- and anti-CPM rallies, was nonetheless aghast at Buddhadeb's talk of "our people" (CPM activists) and "they" (opposition workers): "A political leader can make a distinction between 'us' and 'them', but a chief minister can't. What he has said is uncivil. He shouldn't have used such language."
Filmmaker Mrinal Sen, also seen to be a fence-sitter, is simply cautious: "I don't want to say anything on this. Media often misquotes me."
But perhaps the most quoted person in this debate has been Noam Chomsky, as close as the Left gets to an international presiding deity. Last month he headed a list of signatories to a letter to their "friends in Bengal". They underlined the dangers in allowing Nandigram to divide the Left, at a time when "a world power has demolished one state (Iraq) and is not threatening another (Iran)".
The letter said: "We send our fullest solidarity to the peasants who have been forcibly dispossessed. We understand that the government has promised not to build a chemical hub in the area around Nandigram. We understand that those who had been dispossessed by the violence are now being allowed back to their homes, without recrimination. We understand that there is now talk of reconciliation. This is what we favour."
The signature campaign is believed to have been coordinated by Vijay Prashad, professor of international studies at Trinity College, Hartford, Connecticut. Among the signatories: Tariq Ali (editor, New Left Review), Howard Zinn (American historian), Mahmood Mamdani (professor at New York's Columbia University and author of Good Muslim, Bad Muslim) and Akeel Bilgrami (philosophy professor at Columbia).
It instantly drew forth a response from the India-based Left. Signed by, among others, Mahashweta Devi, Sumit Sarkar and Arundhati Roy, it said: "Regaining control over Nandigram is vital for the CPM to reassure its corporate partners that it is in complete control of the situation and that any kind of resistance will be comprehensively crushed. The euphemism for this in the free marketplace is 'creating a good investment climate'." And: "History has shown us that internal dissent is invariably silenced by dominant forces claiming that a bigger enemy is at the gate. Iraq and Iran are not the only targets of that bigger enemy. The struggle against SEZs and corporate globalisation is an intrinsic part of the struggle against US imperialism."
It is this view that dominated amongst delegates from 13 countries who attended the International Anti-imperialist Conference in Kolkata over November 28-29, with representatives coming from France, the US, Russia, Canada, Syria, Iran, Nepal, Bangladesh, Bahrain, Germany, Palestine, Lebanon and Turkey.
One of the resolutions, for instance, equated the scene in Iraq with that in Nandigram. The conference was organized by SUCI, a Left party that has never been part of the Left Front. At Nandigram, it backed the Bhumi Uchched Protirodh Committee, the organisation behind the peoples' protests.
Among other resolutions: "Hailing the victory of Lebanon Resistance under the leadership of Hizbullah and others (not specified)." "Solidarity with the Bolivarian model of development in Latin America, condemning imperialist aggression and destabilization campaigns against Cuba, Venezuela and Latin America as a whole" (the CPM leadership is an advocate of stronger ties with Cuba and Venezuela).
The most startling comment came from Ramsey Clark, the former US attorney general or top law officer, who drove down to Nandigram accompanied by SUCI leaders: "Let us stop talking and start acting to resist imperialism. Let us stand up against ongoing imperialism in Iraq and in Nandigram."
Interestingly, one of the signatories to the original Prashad letter, Susan George, a fellow at the Transnational Institute, a global network for "progressive politics", later withdrew her signature. She said she hoped her "Indian friends" would accept her "regrets for having signed a letter which has been used politically in India in ways I cannot condone and do not approve".
It is not clear what those "ways" she referred to are. But the Chomsky letter has been prominently printed in Ganashakti, the CPM mouthpiece.
Chomsky, however, has also been invoked by the anti-Nandigram intellectuals, and at a public rally director Aparna Sen was seen holding up a placard with a quote purportedly from Chomsky: "I have been following these grim events of Nandigram and their consequences for he victims. I am worried."
In this context, the fence-sitters in West Bengal have been duly noted. Gautam Ghose and Mrinal Sen, for instance, have made it a point to be seen at both pro and anti-CPM rallies, claiming that they are with any group that preaches peace.
The fight for the Communist soul is clearly far from finished.

George Harrison Fund for UNICEF announces $450,000 for
Cyclone Sidr Victims

By Amir Khasru
Dhaka - 04-December-2007

The George Harrison Fund for UNICEF today announced a
donation of $450,000 for relief and recovery efforts
for the victims of Cyclone Sidr in Bangladesh.

George Harrison had a long association with Bangladesh
and UNICEF. He will always be remembered by
Bangladeshis for the landmark benefit concert held on
August 1st 1971 for Bangladesh refugees.

In 2005, Mrs. Harrison launched the George Harrison
Fund for UNICEF in her late husband's name with an
initial donation of $1 million. It specifically
targets UNICEF programs in Bangladesh but also
provides lifesaving assistance to children suffering
from civil conflict, natural disasters and poverty
elsewhere.

[mukto-mona] Nandigram grave

Grave riddle in Nandigram by Anshuman Phadikar (http://telegraphindia.com/1071206/asp/frontpage/story_8635799.asp)
Khejuri, Dec. 5: The CRPF today stumbled upon five mounds of earth resembling graves in a field in East Midnapore's Khejuri.
If bodies are found inside and their identity established, the findings could throw fresh light on allegations that outsiders were brought in by the CPM to help the party recapture Nandigram. Khejuri had remained a CPM stronghold even at the peak of resistance in Nandigram.
Alok Raj, the deputy inspector-general of the CRPF, said the central force was tipped off that some bodies had been buried in Khejuri.
A CRPF posse reached Bamunchak village, about 1km from the heart of Khejuri, at 4am today and carried out a search. On the side of a road, they found the five mounds that looked like graves.
The CRPF had gone prepared with spades and crowbars but the mounds could not be touched as the mandatory magistrate's order was not available.
The East Midnapore superintendent of police, S.S. Panda, said the matter would be thoroughly probed. "But as for exhuming the bodies, we will not do anything in a hurry as villagers' sentiments are involved," he added.
Raj, the CRPF officer, said he had been told by police that five persons who were killed in a bomb blast at Sherkhanchowk in Khejuri on the night of October 27 were cremated and their remains were buried there.
"But we found several discrepancies in the versions of family members of those killed on that day and local residents. We have asked the police to carry out a thorough probe. Generally, bodies are cremated in a shamshan. Why should funeral pyres be lit on the roadside?" Raj asked.
On October 27 night, gunfights were reported across the Nandigram-Khejuri divide, and five alleged CPM bomb-makers had died in an accidental explosion around midnight. Three persons —Sunil Bar, 45, Bachan Das, 24, and Gobinda Singh, 37 — were killed on the spot while Gour Das, 24, and Srimanta Das, 35, died in Tamluk district hospital later. Gobinda was from Belda in West Midnapore, 50km from Khejuri, while the rest were from Gokulnagar, 10km from the mounds.
The four from Gokulnagar had fled their homes to the CPM's relief camp at Sherkhanchowk.
Local police suspect that the mounds were the graves of these five persons.
However, the CRPF could not find till late this evening any villager who had seen funeral pyres.
"Some villagers told us that the ground was dug up and some mutilated bodies were buried there. They added that as the graves were not deep enough, dogs dug out limbs. The area was filled with stench. Then one night, unidentified people re-dug the graves and the bodies were properly buried," a CRPF officer said. "We feel there is more to it than meets the eye."
The CRPF team questioned the relatives of some of the five who died. "Initially, Kabita, the widow of Bachan Das, told us that she was present at her husband's funeral. But she changed her statement and confessed she was not present," an officer said.
Sunil Bar's widow, Sharmila, could not identify the spot where her husband's pyre was lit.
In Calcutta, inspector-general (headquarters), Jogesh Chatterjee, said the family members of four persons said that after cremation, the bones were buried in the field. "There is no confirmation as yet about the fifth body," he added.

[vinnomot] Editor Naimul Islam Khan and the unpulished report

Editor Naimul Islam Khan and the unpulished report

Bah, valoi tu shikhechhen, Mr. Editor. Vaggo valo that there is no strict ethics enforcement mechanism for your profession, otherwise ....

It was amazing to read your shikarokti-mulok column about your mishandling of professional behaviour as an editor of a national daily that you also own. First of all, if you were not the publisher too, instead if there was someone else in that place, you should have been fired by now. But Alas! you are the publisher, too. (If you are not yet sure what we are talking about, here it is: http://www.amadershomoy.com/news.php?id=216255&sys=1 )

Secondly, if there was any attempt to keep sanity of your profession in Bangladesh and also, if there was any serious and capable attempt on the part of government to return sanity to your profession, by this time, there should have been a prosecution started on the allegation of professional misconduct on your part. But Alas, that is not there. So, you are safe.

(BTW, we would write another article soon, on how government could actually try to return sanity in your profession, without being heavy handed)

Most unfortunate thing is that you have also learned the prime incapability (or capability!) from our corrupt politicians. Blame something else for your incompetence. So, what is that 'something else'? Well, for people in other nations, it is different in different countries, based on the character and background of those leaders in different countries. But in Bangladesh, it is always the same. Poverty. Doesn't not matter what is the problem, poverty is always the villain for the politicians. You may say - isn't it? Well, yes, it is the symptom of something most of the cases. But it by itself is not the cause. We would like to ask a reverse question to them, what have you done about it? Just because you lead a poor country, you should sleep two hours less from other leaders in other countries. Have they done it? No. But they were the first to sell the misfortune of my country for nothing. A new type of begging is starting - it seems. We are having problem because of them. Climate Change is the new villain, in addition to the poverty. Well, didn't Bangladesh know that is going to happen? What they have done about it? Given the scenario, Bangladesh should be intimately working with Netherland for technology help - if we are really worried about rising sea-level. Don't know what is the relationship with Netherland here? Well, if you do not know, you should try to know. We can not go in detail here. But the point is, we haven't done anything to do that. So, just do not start blaming others for the misfortune and incompetence of yours.

Coming back to the topic, Mr. Editor, you are lucky that none of the possibility would become true, even though you have started something you can not professionally do and also keep it sane by behaving ethically. What is your defense? You have to pay your people! Who can deny that logic, right? Good. Good. Eito chai. That way you can get yourself into the category of others in your profession who has gone before you.

Enough sarcasm. Before we end, let us do what we usualy try. Lets try to be constructive and see if there is any solution to your problem. Thats what we try to do - find out innovative and pragmatic solution.

What you have done in the past, lets forget. After all, you have at least confessed, which many are not doing. So, lets forget that. But lets also not forget that you have to do something to make sure that you can not use the same logic again. You can not open and close your ethics book as needed basis. That should be always open at your desk. Can you do that?

You must be thinking - how come? Oh, you are the owner, too. Right? How about listing your media company in the stock exchange? Why don't ask for support from those who deserves that - instead of the culprits who mostly runs businesses (at least that was the case so far, for perceived successful companies and NGOs). You might be surprised to find out how many investors are there who are inspired by the Social Entrepreniourship Model being preached by Professor Yunus. Why don't you try that? After all, you should not be worried about ownership since it seems to be a liability for your professional work, assuming our assumptions about you are correct.

Have you considered doing that? If not, you should. Or you should consider asking for investment through private placement, if you do not have enough guts to go public. There should be enough people who wants to pay for the ownership by not interfering your operations. You have enough fans and friends - use your editor to sell the ownership or liability to them. Being editor comes with some responsibility. Being owner also comes with some responsibility. You can not switch the roles whichever fits you and still expect to get away with that. Ekbar duibar public might be amazed at your openness, but one day they will get. Don't wait for that day.

If you thought some of the ideas are worth of your reading time, please forward it to others. If you have an ear to the columinsts in regular traditional media, please forward it to them. If you have an ear to the journalists and news editors of the electronic media, discuss it with them. Hope they would look at the suggestions and give due diligence.

Thanks for your time,

Innovation Line
