[mukto-mona] FW: Obama scraps missile shield plan for Europe--Asia Post editorial dated 24.9.09

Obama Scraps Missile Shield Plan : Welcome Step

AP has reported from Prague that President Barack Obama has decided to scrap plans for a US missile defence shield in the Czech Republic and Poland that had deeply angered Russia, the Czech prime minister confirmed yesterday.Nato's new chief hailed the move as "a positive step" and a Russian analyst said the move will increase the chances that Russia will cooperate more closely with the United States in the dispute over Iran's nuclear program.Premier Jan Fischer told reporters that Obama phoned him overnight to say that "his government is pulling out of plans to build a missile defence radar on Czech territory.""The same happened with Poland. Poland was informed in the same way about this intention," Fischer said.Under the plan, which had been proposed by the Bush administration to defend the United States and its European allies against a possible missile attack from Iran or elsewhere in the Middle East, 10 interceptor rockets were to have been stationed in Poland and a radar system based in the Czech Republic. But Russia was livid over the prospect of having US interceptor rockets in countries so close to its territory, and the Obama administration has sought to improve strained ties with the Kremlin.A top Russian lawmaker praised the move."The US president's decision is a well-thought and systematic one," said Konstantin Kosachev, head of the foreign affairs committee in the State Duma, the lower house of the Russian parliament. "It reflects understanding that any security measure can't be built entirely on the basis of one nation."Fischer said Obama assured him that the "strategic cooperation" between the Czech Republic and the US would continue, and that Washington considers the Czechs among its closes allies.Fischer said after a review of the missile defence system, the US now considers the threat of an attack using short- and mid-range missiles greater than one using long-range rockets."That's what the Americans assessed as the most serious threat," and Obama's decision was based on that, he said.In Poland, officials declined to confirm Fischer's remarks, saying they were waiting for a formal announcement from Washington.Alexei Arbatov, head of the Russian Academy of Science's Center for International Security, told a Moscow radio station Thursday that the US was giving in on missile defence to get more cooperation from Russia on Iran."The United States is reckoning that by rejecting the missile-defence system or putting it off to the far future, Russia will be inclined together with the United States to take a harder line on sanctions against Iran," he said.In Washington, Defence Secretary Robert Gates scheduled a news conference Thursday with a top military leader, Marine Gen. James Cartwright, who has been a point man on the technical challenge of arraying missiles and interceptors to defend against long-range missiles. The decision to scrap the plan will have future consequences for US relations with eastern Europe.

We consider it as a good development for peace in the world. The mad arms race must stop.Indeed what is needed is to proceed with elimination of all nuclear weapons. It is possible now.Now there is general agreement in the world on democracy, even if there are differences in details.Similarly there is agreement of a market system with regulation and supervision ( as prescribed by welfare system and by Islamic economic system ) or without any kind of control ( as classical economists of captalism taught). As such it is possible to gradually eliminate nuclear weapons by a time-bound schedule. Major world leaders should take lead in this respect in the interest of humanity. They will have to ignore private sector defence manufacturers.

(A Society for all Ages)"- এ মুল বাণী ঘোষনা করেছে।

[mukto-mona] Analysis: Obama presidency at pivotal moment

Analysis: Obama presidency at pivotal moment

NEW YORK – When President Barack Obama said the United Nations had reached "a pivotal moment," he could just as well have been referring to his own presidency.

Both on the world stage and at home, Obama keeps asking for more, politely but firmly. But he's still had no signature win, not the kind that would set off a chain reaction of other victories.

For the U.N., Obama is seeking global cooperation to confront the challenges of bloody conflicts, a warming planet, economic deprivation and dangerous weapons proliferation. For his presidency, he's seeking the kind of high-fiving, powerful victory that a major health care overhaul would represent.

Power begets power, and success begets success, and no one knows this better than Obama's chief of staff, Rahm Emanuel. "In politics, power is not static," he said in an interview Wednesday with PBS' Charlie Rose. "As you use it, if you're successful, it accumulates to achieve other goals."

Easier said than done, though Thursday's Security Council approval of a resolution embracing Obama's goal of a world free of nuclear weapons was a plus. So was the three-way Mideast leaders' meeting he engineered and led.

Here in New York this week, Obama also managed to sharpen the focus of his diplomatic doctrine for succcess.

The nation and world have watched his foreign policy philosophy and style unfold for months, on foreign trips and through major speeches. There were addresses on terrorist interrogations at the National Archives, on a nuclear-free world in Prague, on reaching out to Muslims from Cairo.

Still, it somehow all clicked more clearly as Obama stood at the podium in the General Assembly's cavernous, packed hall Wednesday and made the case for urgent cooperation among nations.

His themes:

• America is out of the bullying business. It knows the world's beefs with the U.S., and the Obama administration is working to address them, a nice I-hear-you touch. And going forward, the U.S. will emphasize cooperation over a go-it-alone attitude, letting the credit for any progress flow where it may. In other words, we may still be the world's superpower — no denying that — but we're going to act like we're just one of the guys.

• Americans are impatient, and you should be, too. The problems are urgent and everyone must do his part — no shirkers allowed.

• No whining, either. Don't waste time blaming others, like, say, the United States, or making excuses. And if you want more rights than you feel you have, beware — they come with responsibilities.

• Last, but far from least in Obamaland, don't make the perfect the enemy of the good. Be willing to give away more than you want, or nothing will get done. Obama told Palestinians just that this week, meaning they shouldn't draw lines in the sand over Jewish settlement expansion on land they want for a state.

He also says it all the time to Democrats in Congress over the health care bill.

But talk is talk, and results are another thing.

Obama has had successes, a fairly long list, actually, for a relatively short time in office.

He got a massive economic stimulus approved quickly by Congress. He oversaw a breathtaking range of federal interventions to calm markets, open up credit and arrest economic freefall. He got a Security Council resolution against North Korea's nuclear weapons program. Even his popularity is an accomplishment of a sort, as it appears to reflect better standing in the world for the U.S..

Just this week, Obama got encouraging signs from Russia that it might shift position and support tougher sanctions on Iran's suspected nuclear weapons program. He got Israeli and Palestinian leaders in the same room, with a handshake even.

But none of his victories has been big-time enough to create game-changing momentum.

It was a pretty easy lift to get Thursday's Security Council resolution: calling for a nuclear-free world is fairly popular. The hard part is clearing the hurdles to move toward that reality, such as Senate ratification of the same nuclear test ban treaty it rejected a decade ago.

And statements by Israeli and Palestinian leaders after Tuesday's three-way sitdown made clear how very far they are from making progress.

What could likely qualify as a foreign policy show-me moment? Agreement from Iran to stop enriching uranium. Tough sanctions by the U.S. and its allies if the Iranians won't comply. Resumption of Mideast peace talks.

Meantime, Obama is asking and asking and mostly being denied.

European allies won't send significantly more troops into the toughest fighting in Afghanistan. Israel rebuffed Obama's demand that it stop settlement expansion, and Arab leaders won't make conciliatory moves toward Israel. Few nations are taking detainees from the U.S. military's Guantanamo Bay prison. India and China are balking at tough climate requirements, and Obama's effort to get a climate bill through the U.S. Congress is stalled.

"I'm not saying he's naive," said Jon Alterman, a senior fellow at the Center for Strategic and International Studies. "But governments don't do things because they're in the world's interests. Governments often don't even do things because they're in their people's interests. Many times, governments do things because it's in the government's interest."

So getting to common ground, and from there to action, can be a very long process.

"We never came in under the impression that years of these challenges would be wiped away in only a matter of months," White House press secretary Robert Gibbs said. "The president has invested a lot of time and energy in these challenges, and understands it's going to take some time."

And Obama showed in his presidential campaign that he can prevail against odds over the long term.

But there is one thing Emanuel did not mention about the dynamics of power. When you use it to reach for the stars, as Obama has done in so many areas at once, and are not successful, the fall can be very far. Momentum flows to the opponents and your credibility the next time around is pretty low.

[mukto-mona] Toronto Terrorist: “In Islam there is no racism; we only hate kuffar [non-Muslims]”

Ali Mohamed Dirie pleads guilty in Toronto Terror Trial:

 "White people "most filthiest

people on the face of this planet"

Friends,

I wonder how many more of the Muslim Canadian men involved in the Toronto-18 Terror plot will have to be convicted on terrorism charges before Islamist apologists and their leftwing allies admit the bad guys are the terrorists, not the people who brought them to justice.

Now, Ali Mohamed Dirie, a Somali-Canadian gun-running jihadi has confessed to his part in the Toronto terror plot. However, even in admitting guilt, the 26-year old jihadi shows neither remorse nor regret for his actions.

This hate-filled man whose family asked and got refuge in Canada as an escape from the war in Somalia, has no words of thanks for his hosts. On the contrary, he admits in court that he considers white people the "Number one filthiest people on the face of the planet." The reason? "They don't have Islam. They're the most filthiest people."

Despite uttering racist epithets at white people, Ali Mohamed Dirie insists, "In Islam there is no racism, we only hate kufar [non-Muslims]."

Perhaps, now is the time for all bleeding heart liberals to come to their senses and recognize the cancer that is growing within our society: one of hate, terrorism and supremacist self-righteous racism that is aided by the doctrine that suggests real life beginning after death.

Read and reflect.

No remorse from terrorist, court told

Stewart Bell,
National Post

A Toronto man who admitted yesterday he was a member of a terrorist group that planned attacks in Canada was caught on police wiretaps saying he hated non-Muslims.

Ali Mohamed Dirie, a Canadian born in Somalia, called white people the "No. 1 filthiest people on the face of the planet. They don't have Islam. They're the most filthiest people." He added that, "In Islam there is no racism, we only hate kufar [non-Muslims]."

The 26-year-old was one of 18 Toronto-area men charged in 2006 in connection with a plot to attack targets in Southern Ontario in order to terrorize Canadians into withdrawing troops from Afghanistan.

Yesterday, in a Brampton courtroom, Dirie acknowledged he had obtained handguns and ammunition in the United States knowing they were for the terrorist group's ringleader, who followed "an extremist interpretation of Islam."

For almost two hours, the Crown read a 28-page statement of facts before Justice Bruce Durno. When he was finished, Dirie, dressed in a grey hoodie, baggy jeans and a blue skullcap, was asked if he thought it was accurate.
"Yes, I do," he said.

Dirie has pleaded guilty to participating in the activities of a terrorist group. A second charge of committing an offence for a terrorist group was stayed. The Crown and defence have agreed on a seven-year sentence but disagree over how much credit he deserves for the time he has already spent behind bars.

Crown prosecutor Clyde Bond wants him to serve two more years while the defence wants him to be released at his sentencing next Friday.

Since his arrest, Dirie has shown no remorse and has behaved badly, punching a corrections officer in the face, spitting at another officer and throwing tea at another, Mr. Bond said. His lawyer, Robert Nuttall, said while Dirie was "passionately opposed to Canada's role in Afghanistan" he had matured and no longer believed in using violence to advance his political beliefs.

Mr. Nuttall said Dirie, who has a high school education, had lost his father in an attack in Somalia but that he had a supportive family in Canada that did not believe in the use of terrorism or violence.

Much of the agreed statement of facts read before Judge Durno consisted of intercepted telephone calls between Dirie and the alleged ringleader of the terrorist group, who cannot be named because of a publication ban.

Dirie was arrested at the Peace Bridge border crossing near Buffalo, N. Y., in August, 2005, while returning to Canada in a car rented by the alleged ringleader. Customs officers found bullets in Dirie's socks and two loaded semiautomatic handguns taped to his thighs.

Later, the man said to be the ringleader told undercover police agent Mubin Shaikh that two of his associates had been arrested at the border with handguns and that "they were supposed to bring back assault rifles but they deviated from the plan."

While he was imprisoned for gun smuggling, Dirie spoke repeatedly with the alleged ringleader and talked often about buying more guns, which they referred to using code words such as "girls," "wives" or "black chicks."

"After his arrest in August 2005, Dirie continued to consider himself to be a member of that group even though he was incarcerated," Mr. Bond said. "He actively took steps to make connections with persons to facilitate the acquisition of guns.... He actively took steps to arrange for the acquisition of false travel documents for himself and members of the group.

"He took an active role in recruiting other inmates to adopt extreme jihadi beliefs and to become members of, or involved in supporting, the terrorist group through means such as 'hardcore dawas.' " A dawa is a call to convert to Islam.

He also agreed that, even while he was imprisoned, he had provided "encouragement, advice and direction" to the alleged ringleader about such matters as acquiring guns and recruiting.

At one point, the alleged ringleader sent CDs to Dirie, who was then at the Collins Bay prison, that were labelled Qu'ran but which actually contained footage of Osama bin Laden calling for attacks on the United States.

The arrests of the "Toronto 18" followed lengthy investigations by the Canadian Security Intelligence Service, RCMP and other police forces into homegrown Canadian extremists inspired by al-Qaeda.

The group trained at a camp north of Toronto but then broke into two factions. One group began planning truck bombings in Toronto and at a military base. Dirie was linked to the leader of the other group, who had discussed storming the Parliament Buildings in Ottawa.

Police made the arrests before any attacks occurred.

Dirie is the third member of the terrorist group to face sentencing so far. Saudi-born Saad Khalid has also pleaded guilty and Nishanthan Yogakrishnan, a Sri Lankan who converted to Islam, was convicted last September.

Eight others are awaiting trial.

[ALOCHONA] Jalil says 90% BAL leaders in the cabinet have connections with DGFI

Jalil says 90% BAL leaders in the cabinet have connections with DGFI

Dhaka, Sept 24 (bdnews24.com)--Former Awami League general secretary Abdul Jalil has alleged that the party leaders who are now in the cabinet have links with the military's intelligence.

"Ninety nine percent Awami League leaders who are in the cabinet have connections with Directorate General of Forces Intelligence," Jalil said in a brief interview with a London-based Bangla TV channel on Tuesday. "They only failed to control me," he added.
About the incumbent general secretary, Syed Ashraful Islam, Jalil said he had fled the country after the promulgation of the state of emergency. Sheikh Rehana, the younger sister of the incumbent prime minister, later arranged his return to Dhaka after consulting with DGFI, Jalil claimed.

Abdul Jalil has delivered many controversial statements in the interview.
The channel, which took the interview, is now facing pressure from many quarters not to broadcast it. When contacted by bdnews24.com, Firoz Khan, chairman of the Bangla TV channel, said that they had recorded the interview for a programme titled 'Janatar Mancha'.

They had only broadcast a brief portion of the interview in their news bulletin, he said, adding that the channel has taken interviews of some more politicians. Asked when Jalil's interview would be telecast, Khan could not give any specific schedule or date. He declined to reply when asked if they were facing any pressure from any quarter regarding the telecast of the interview.
Abdul Jalil has said he made a mistake by not going against the party chief, Sheikh Hasina, on his return to the country to protect his post during the 2007-08 caretaker government regime. "It was my mistake not to go against her. My offence was extreme loyalty to her," Jalil said in an interview with bdnews24.com in London on Wednesday.

Now reduced to a member of the party's advisory committee, a body without much say in the organisational matters, the ruling party MP is currently on a visit to London, UK. "Sheikh Hasina ordered me from America to take rest," he said, adding he did not protest the leader's command. "My decision was wrong. I should have taken her head-on."

Jalil said the party advisory council has no function now and there is no chance to make it effective. Terming himself and other veteran AL leaders mere activists, Jalil said it was a ploy to oust the activists from politics.

He said '90 percent' ministers of the incumbent government are 'reformists'--people who propagated the so-called reform moves in the party to sideline Hasina, allegedly with the patronage of the military-backed interim government. "Ninety percent members of the cabinet were supporters of the reformists."
Asked whether there was any agreement between the AL and the caretaker government in the elections, he said: "It might have happened."

"I did not contest the elections on the basis of any understanding. People of my constituency love me and I stay with them," Jalil, who was elected MP from a Naogaon constituency, said. He said Hasina had done injustice by making sycophants members of the party presidium. He said it was not possible to implement the manifesto of the party with the newcomers. "They do not have any experience. All of them are new. What do they understand of the party organisation?"

Asked whether the party had any understanding with the heroes of 1/11 changeover, he said: "If it was not that, why I had been kept inactive as party general secretary for the last two years."

"I am the legitimate general secretary, according to party constitution. "Why [Syed Ashraful Islam] was given the post of general secretary? It could not be done if there was no understanding with the caretaker government," Jalil said. "On return home six months after having treatment from abroad I got my post back. Zillur Rahman was happy to see me.. "But later Sheikh Hasina and Sheikh Rehana asked Zillur Rahman to change the decision."

"I was arrested because the Directorate General of Forces Intelligence could not bring me under their influence. "I was then giving statement in favour of Sheikh Hasina. Some of my friends were speaking against her and DGFI wanted me to speak like them. But I did not do so. "Sheikh Hasina is my leader. If there is a need for any change it should be done by the party, not by external forces under orders from DGFI. "I told them I would not be able to do that. It was my offence since I did not obey their orders. That's why I was given punishment instead of reward," Jalil said.

On the incumbent general secretary, Syed Ashraf, he said: "He fled the country during the caretaker government, but soon came back." Jalil claimed that Rehana had arranged his return, making an understanding with the DGFI.

He said Rehana was controlling the party from the backstage and added that she was doing everything in consultation with Hasina. "Otherwise, why would she do that? Sheikh Hasina was not in London that time'" he said.

About commerce minister Faruq Khan, he said: "He speaks more than he works. This is dangerous for him." Jalil, a former commerce minister during the 1996-2001 term of the AL government, said: "One should run the ministry being free from any greed. If there is any greed, he can't deliver."

Talking about deals with a Swedish company for sugar and edible oil, he said: "Enquiring through the Swedish embassy it was found that the address of the company was fake. "After canceling the deal, Faruq Khan asked the company to submit their tender again. The address was wrong even the next time. "Why did he do that over and over again? Later, we found that he had personal relation with the company."

Talking about the activities of the new AL committee, Jalil asked: "Is it possible to work with the novice party men? It took us 50 years to get such position in the party." Asked about his 'April 30 trump card drama' -- the deadline Jalil announced for the BNP-led government to fall in 2006--he said: "It was not only my decision. The leader (Hasina) had approved of that. I did not do anything without her approval. "I have documentary evidence. I have asked for collecting the news reports on the April 30 trump card.

"I will present both the reports of trump card and a five-point agreement. I was not alone, I was made a victim. Sheikh Hasina had contribution to the five-point agreement," he claimed. Jalil said: "My offence was that I was loyal to her."

About the opposition BNP's parliament boycott, Jalil said: "I think the main opposition should be brought back to parliament by all means because without opposition parliament cannot function. I have spoken to the speaker about that." Asked how long he would pursue politics, the senior leader said: "I will speak for people as long as I live. And protest against any injustice. That is called politics."

On the success of the AL-led government, Jalil said: "I hoped that there would be more success. The success achieved so far was not up to our expectation. "Power crisis has remained a nagging problem… We could not add a single megawatt of electricity to the power grid," said Jalil.

Asked whether the party would be able to move forward after axing of the five party veterans---Suranjit Sengupta, Amir Hossain Amu, Tofail Ahmed, Abdur Razzak and himself, he said: "Nothing waits for anybody. Even though the party and the countrymen would be deprived of the experienced leaders." Awami League dropped party stalwarts Amir Hossain Amu, Razzak, Tofael Suranjit, and Jalil from the Presidium, the party's highest policy-making body, at its national council on July 24.

Jalil resigned his post on July 21 for 'not being allowed to discharge duty for the upcoming council." He was elected general secretary in the 19th council of the party in December 2002. Jalil was arrested and jailed on corruption charges on May 28, 2007, during the state of emergency, along with many other politicians. He was later paroled by the caretaker government on Mar 2 last year to seek medical treatment in Singapore after falling ill in jail.
He returned home six months later.

During his detention and while being treated abroad, the outspoken Jalil was reported on a number of occasions criticising Hasina's rule of the party, and saying there was no democracy within Awami League. He denied the statements after his release on bail ahead of the Dec 2008 general elections. He said he was tortured and forced to make such statements during his detention.

Jalil announced he was resuming his duties as general secretary after his release, only to find himself sidelined initially as Syed Ashraf, then joint general secretary, continued in his role as acting general secretary for some time. Though Jalil was eventually reinstated, Ashraf had been official party spokesperson since.

In a television interview, on Apr 20 this year, Jalil said he wanted to carry on with his duties as secretary general, but there were misunderstandings between him and Hasina. Most recently, Jalil during a speech in parliament on Jun 25 demanded the removal of the prime minister's advisers as they had not sworn any oath of secrecy. He also accused unspecified advisers of attempting to steer the cabinet and hampering the work of the government.
