Forty years ago this month, the country of Bangladesh declared its independence from Pakistan. Then-President Richard Nixon supported Pakistan during the war because he wanted to prove the US would stand by an ally.

Many Americans disagreed with that stance. And when a ship headed for Pakistan with military equipment and ammunition was set to stop at a US port, one group of Americans felt it was necessary to get involved.

"I was ready to risk my life there," says 78-year-old Richard Taylor. "I just wanted to get in front of that ship."

In July 1971, Taylor and a group of protesters used canoes and kayaks to try and block the Pakistani freighter Padma from reaching the Port of Baltimore.

The ship was coming from Canada, bound for Pakistan. It was said to be carrying military equipment and ammunition, presumably to aid the government in its war with what was then called East Pakistan.

The US had ordered an arms embargo on new shipments to Pakistan. But newspapers reported that Pakistani freighters like The Padma were still visiting US ports to load military equipment that had been purchased before the embargo.

Taylor's flotilla of two canoes, three kayaks and a rubber raft left from Baltimore's Broening Park. The police and Coast Guard tried to stop it. But Taylor says the group was undaunted.

"One of key parts of this was that the US government was sending military aid to the West Pakistani government that was doing the invasion," says Taylor. "So that made it poignant. People were suffering thousands of miles away, but our government was helping that suffering to happen."

Timmy Aziz knew that suffering first hand. He grew up in East Pakistan. He was 10 when war broke out. He now teaches environmental design here in Baltimore.

"It's really impressive how far they would have had to have gone," says Aziz. "They would have been way in the middle of the water and completely in harm's way. This massive freighter and these tiny little canoes, which would easily get washed away in the wake of the ship that size."

Forty years on, Bengalis are expressing a renewed interest in their country's independence movement. One of them is New Yorker Aris Yousuf. He finds the canoe blockade story so fascinating that he's making a documentary on it.

"I wanted to see if I could make a film about the history of 1971, Bangladesh's independence war and what happened in the US and be able to put it together from the people who participated at that time," says Yousuf.

What happened that time in July 1971 was that the US Coast Guard foiled Richard Taylor and his friends. The Padma made it into the harbor; it was eventually loaded and left. The following month, protesters expanded their actions to include any Pakistani ship trying to dock in the US, regardless of its cargo. And they enticed longshoremen at the Port of Philadelphia to join the boycott.

"The cause had a heart, had a deep heart," says 64-year-old Elliot Gevis. "And there were tremendous atrocities that were going on."

Today, Gevis is a pediatrician. But back in 1971, he worked the docks in Philadelphia. He learned about the war in East Pakistan and the canoe protest from flyers, and helped convince other longshoremen not to load ships. The first freighter affected was The Al-Ahmadi. Richard Taylor and other protesters again used canoes and kayaks to try and block the ship. When it ran the blockade, Gevis and other dockworkers refused to unload it.

"Not everybody was supportive of that," Gevis recalls. "But then again, they did respect unions. And they did respect not crossing picket lines, things of that sort. But at the same time, they had to pay bills and feed families. That was a big consideration."

When the ship pushed off, no cargo had been loaded or unloaded.

After four more months of intense protests–and picketing in front of the White House– the US government finally ended all arms exports to Pakistan. It marked the end of one of the more unusual protest movements in America's history.

"We've been just humbled by people who are Bengalis saying we couldn't have done it without this movement here," says Phyllis Taylor, Richard's wife.

She, too, was involved in the protests.

"Not us necessarily, but a small group of committed people giving us hope, as Dick said, in the jungles that you could make a change."

After nine months of fighting, East Pakistanis won the war. Their prize: a country now known as Bangladesh

Salams & Peace & Blessings on this blessed Friday

i think dr jo; dr farouk and our "The Malaysian DNA Conundrum" also narrowly made it into dr dzul's collection of essays - MPF only meddles in medical politics :)

Foreword

Karim Raslan

I woke up on the 9th of March 2008 to a very different Malaysia. The now-legendary 12th General Elections had just taken place, and the country’s Parliament was filled with people I had little comprehension of—whose parties, PKR, DAP and PAS, were now in power in the country’s most urbanized and prosperous states.

I realized that these new MPs and State Assemblymen were from very different backgrounds than mine. Still, I resolved to get to know them and learn about their respective visions for Malaysia and how that would impact our collective future.

It was always going to be a difficult process, but I had particular reservations about the Islamist party, PAS. Like many politically liberal and secular Muslims, I found the party’s advocacy of leadership of and by the Ulama deeply problematic and worrying. As a humanist and proto-novelist (a “tukang cerita”), I was also naturally suspicious of the party’s past attempts to implement moral policing and religious fundamentalism—witness the damage that the “Islamic State” issue has wrought in trying to forge a united oppositional front in Malaysia.

How would PAS fare in the new political landscape? What would it do with its new-found power?

These were the questions that were very much on my mind as I left my privileged enclave and ventured into a different world.

Fortunately for me, my “learning process” was aided by Dr Dzulkefly Ahmad, the one-time director of the PAS Research Centre think-tank and the newly-elected MP for Kuala Selangor. Dr Dzul -as I called him - knew I was a skeptic from day one. Nonetheless, we both enjoyed talking, exchanging views and I for one needed to understand more about his world.

Over the years I’ve learnt that he’s an extremely thoughtful Malaysian and yet also a practical man -combining his faith, his scientific background (he studied toxicology in the UK and lectured at USM) with the real world.

In essence, this former academic took me in hand, and introduced me to the world of PAS, which I have found to be indeed a different world, but one that is more inter-connected to mine than I had supposed, and which was deeply intellectual with spiritual roots.

Recognizing my trepidation ‘Doc Dzul’, took me through the process gently but thoroughly, showing me both the strengths and weaknesses of his party. Unfailingly polite and thoughtful, he both acknowledged and epitomised the vast diversity encompassed within the “Malay” community which its own leaders often fail to acknowledge.

Indeed, he in many ways represents the “middle-ground” between Umno’s aristocratic milieu and the conservative, ulama-dominated PAS of old. Here was a University of London PhD with a near- encyclopaedic knowledge of the Koran: rooted and comfortable in both the sacred and the everyday.

Moreover, he is confident and secure in his Malay and Muslim identity, yet also able and willing to embrace the concerns of his fellow non-Malay and non-Muslim Malaysians.

Knowing what I know now about the party, the “Erdogan” ethos of Dzulkefly and his like-minded colleagues is not so much a new innovation but more a return, a coming full-circle to the PAS that existed in the time of Burhanuddin al-Helmy when it represented a much broader front than it has done in recent years.

He has helped me to understand that PAS is by no means a monolithic party of religious extremists that its critics would have us believe. Its transformation over the years - engineered through hard and patient work - in which it has ironically become more moderate that the ruling Umno, is nothing short of remarkable. This is so much so that it has caused hesitation and unease amongst some of its own leaders.

Indeed, this collection of essays, Striving for Change, is as much about the struggle over the soul of PAS as it is for political power in Malaysia. The matter is by no means settled, but if the centrists in PAS can continue to hold sway, the party in tandem with its Pakatan Rakyat partners, has the capacity to occupy the middle-ground that Barisan Nasional once did.

Moderate and articulate Malay-Muslim voices like Doc Dzul are so very important in Malaysia today, with sectarianism and the closing of hearts and minds on the rise. While you may not agree with his brand of politics (and I still have severe reservations with PAS), no one can deny that he represents a stream of intellectualism that, if allowed to run its course, will propel his community, party and country into the future.

One can only wish him well.

[mukto-mona] :Senior Banking

Senior Banking...

Shown below, is an actual letter that was sent to a bank by an 86 year old woman.

The bank manager thought it amusing enough to have it published in the New York Times.

 Dear Sir:

I am writing to thank you for bouncing my check with which I endeavored to pay my plumber last month.

By my calculations, three nanoseconds must have elapsed between his presenting the check and the arrival in my account of the funds needed to honor it..

I refer, of course, to the automatic monthly deposit of my entire pension, an arrangement which, I admit, has been in place for only eight years.

You are to be commended for seizing that brief window of opportunity, and also for debiting my account $30 by way of penalty for the inconvenience caused to your bank.

My thankfulness springs from the manner in which this incident has caused me to rethink my errant financial ways.  I noticed that whereas I personally answer your telephone calls and letters, but when I try to contact you, I am confronted by the impersonal, overcharging, pre-recorded, faceless entity which your bank has become.

From now on, I, like you, choose only to deal with a flesh-and-blood person.

My mortgage and loan repayments will therefore and hereafter no longer be automatic, but will arrive at your bank, by check, addressed personally and confidentially to an employee at your bank whom you must nominate.

Be aware that it is an OFFENSE under the Postal Act for any other person to open such an envelope.

Please find attached an Application Contact which I require your chosen employee to complete.

I am sorry it runs to eight pages, but in order that I know as much about him or her as your bank knows about me, there is no alternative.

Please note that all copies of his or her medical history must be countersigned by a Notary Public, and the mandatory details of his/her financial situation (income, debts, assets and liabilities) must be accompanied by documented proof.

In due course, at MY convenience, I will issue your employee with a PIN number which he/she must quote in dealings with me.

I regret that it cannot be shorter than 28 digits but, again, I have modeled it on the number of button presses required of me to access my account balance on your phone bank service.

As they say, imitation is the sincerest form of flattery.

Let me level the playing field even further. When you call me, press buttons as follows:

IMMEDIATELY AFTER DIALLING, PRESS THE STAR (*) BUTTON FOR ENGLISH

 #1.. To make an appointment to see me… [ Read Continue… ]

[ALOCHONA] Breaking the silence: New book portrays the atrocities of the 1971 war

Breaking the silence: New book portrays the atrocities of the 1971 war

Oxford University Press on Thursday launched its latest publication 'Women, War and the Making of Bangladesh: Remembering 1971' written by Yasmin Saikia at a local hotel, here on Thursday.

The book focuses on the story of gender violence in the 1971 war of Bangladesh to probe the relationship between nation, history and women - one of the most vulnerable groups in post-colonial South Asia.Moving beyond the external story of the war as a clash of ideologies and struggle for power between rivals India and Pakistan and East and West Pakistan, the author relates the story of the war as a human event of individual losses and personal tragedies suffered by both women and men.Women talk of rape and torture on a mass scale and of the loss of status and citizenship.

They also speak of their role as agents of change, as social workers, caregivers and wartime fighters. In addition, a few men recollect their wartime brutality as well as their post-war efforts to regain a sense of humanity, to reconcile and heal unresolved traumas.

By combining oral testimony with archival research in India, Pakistan and Bangladesh, this book sheds new light on the social, political and cultural history of the subcontinent after the partition of India and Pakistan in 1947 to show the gaps between people and their governments, memories and history.Yasmin Saikia is Hardt-Nickachos chairman in Peace Studies and Professor of History, Arizona State University.

She is the author of numerous articles and two books, In the Meadows of Gold and Fragmented Memories: Struggling to be Ta/-A horn in India. The evening featured a stimulating discussion between Asif Farrukhi, literary critic, translator, and short story writer, and Yasmin Saikia.

While discussing the subject of her book, the author highlighted how important it was to study violence and know it ethically and personally to develop a human language for reconciliation between victims and perpetrators.

She pointed out that the individual stories of the 1971 survivors articulate a collective loss of humanity that transcends the politics of history and nation. In her welcome address, Ameena Saiyid, Managing Director, Oxford University Press Pakistan, introduced the author, and said that the book is part of the data bank that will go a long way in showing the whole event as well as the cultures and times that generated it.

She further added that Saikia also threw light on the problems of collecting authentic material for historiography and her account shows how highly relevant material is suppressed or used for political mileage, and often withdrawn from the scrutiny of unbiased historians.

"It is of course in our interest to learn how not to edit or distort history, if we are ever to learn its lessons," she said.

Re: [mukto-mona] Bhutto's recognition of Bangladesh !!!!

I do not think Bhutto could be called a shrewd politician. After all he was the principal villain for the break-up of his country. Because of the sheer stupidity of his people, he could maintain a good deal of popularity in the post-1971 Pakistan. However, he did not have the shrewdness of even being able to save himself from the death sentence by a court of his country.

A red carpet welcome to Bhutto by Mujib in Dhaka shortly after the independence of Bangladesh was a real shame for the country. I do not think it was for any kind of reality check by Mujib, nor was it due to any kind of shrewd bargain by Bhutto. Welcoming Bhutto, not really caring about punishing the war criminals, firing of Tajuddin, they all fell into a pattern, which did not help Bangladesh; it caused dishonor and misery for the country for the next 35 years.

Subject: [mukto-mona] Bhutto's recognition of Bangladesh !!!!

1. Bhutto, a shrewed politician, was solely responsible for not letting Yahiya to invite Mujib to form the government. Break-up of Pakistan was better for Bhutto as that would guarantee his premiership. Subsequently, when Yahiya Khan, a Pathan, was asked what reward he had received from Bhutto by letting things go as per Bhutto's desire, he pointed to the wheel chair he was sitting on and said, "That's what I have got from him." Ziaul Huque, a Panjabi, who was promoted by Bhutto to position 1 from position 4 in army never forgot Bhutto's "crime". He kept his promise of "hanging that bustard until death." His extremity was too much to be tolerated and hence had to be debited alongwith the then American Ambassador to Pakistan in a plane crash---that's what was a sensational news item in then press and media.

2. On his first arrival to independent Bangladesh, Bhutto was given an unbelievable reception. What a farce! Looks like disapproval came even from within AL. Probably Mujib had to do some reality check. Reconstruction of the devastated land, rehabilitationb of the displaced, and feeding the hungry probably could not be guaranteed with help from India, USSR, and Britain alone. As far as I remember, China had not recognized the new country yet, let alone Saudi Arabia and other Islamic countries. Bhutto with his shrewedness could bargain well to secure a hero's welcome however humiliating it could be to those in whose memory the barbaric atrocities by Pakistani army was still fresh and in whose hearts hatred for Pakistani rulers and Bhutto was still at the peak. We may still remember that to recognize Bangladesh, Saudi Arabia and some other middle eastern countries had to wait till the assassination of Mujib.

How are these words from a lunatic memorable to the people of Bangladesh or to the expatriate Bangladeshis? Are we supposed to rejoice the recognition of Bangladesh by the criminal and failed state of Pakistan, when the fact is that they never had to face justice for the heinous crimes that their military had committed in our land in 1971?
