Re: [mukto-mona] Cows Are Protected; Humans Are Not: New Reality In Digital India! [গো-দেওতা কা দেশ মে]

There is an important piece of information that is missing from George Abraham's commentary. Most of the states of India ban slaughtering cow and eating beef, and quite a few of those states have the Indian National Congress in power. Examples of such states include Himachal Pradesh, Karnataka and Uttarakhand. After BJP came to power with Narendra Modi's leadership in 2014, how many states banned beef.? I recall only Maharashtra. If I am not informed enough, I still think that most of the central, western and northern states had a beef ban in place before 2014 and during the time when INC was the principal political party in India. So, calling only BJP and the affiliated party's barbarian would be an understatement. India has been barbarian for a long time. While the so-called secular INC has been appeasing the Muslims by allowing many of the acts of their religious injustice to remain unchallenged, that party also has been for making beef-eating illegal in India. While mob violence is grossly barbaric, making innocent people who eat beef criminals is intellectually uncivilized, and too much of India, including INC, has been guilty of that for a long time.

Cows Are Protected; Humans Are Not: A New Reality In Digital India!
By George Abraham

When Narendra Modi was campaigning, voters were led to believe that he would fight against corruption and promote a developmental agenda, if he were to be given a chance to govern. While only 31% of the voters heeded his call, it was sufficient to capture an absolute majority of the Lok Sabha seats for BJP and catapult him to the highest office of the land.
Sadly, to the disappointment of even his most ardent followers, governance in India now seems to have taken an ugly turn, with a focus on divisive cultural and religious issues, which have the potential to derail his promised agenda and to threaten the very fabric of the nation that is on the brink of greatness.
The Prime Minister has just returned from a trip to Silicone Valley in California, selling 'Digital India', a program to transform India to a digitally empowered society. Addressing the audience in Silicone Valley, he said the following: "I know, to achieve the vision of Digital India, the government must also start thinking a bit like you'.
According to news reports, days later at Dadri, UP, not too far from the Capital of India, a mob converged at the door of Mohammad Akhlaq, based on the rumor that a cow's slaughtered meat was stored in his refrigerator at home. The mob broke open the door and bludgeoned Mr. Akhlaq; smashed his son's head with a brick; and then dragged Mr. Akhlaqdown14 cement steps, and out to the main road where he was left for all to see. His son is currently fighting for his life in a hospital. The extremists did not even spare Akhlaq's mother who is 70 years old, leaving her with a black eye. They also abused his daughter-in-law and granddaughter.
Does this medieval barbarism of lynching of a person for his dietary practice go with the vision of 'Digital India'? It may have played a part after all, first to orchestrate the assault using 'whatsapp' and 'facebook' and then broadcasting to the entire world the aftermath. According to New York Times which reported the story, many members of the 'save the cow' movement are also prominent local organizers in Prime Minister Narendra Modi's BJP administration. Seven of the 10 youths named in the Dadri lynching FIR are said to belong to the family of district BJP worker Sanjay Rana. The list also includes Rana's son, Vishal. A man is killed and his family is upended because what he eats! It is wrong.
Another sad commentary about this madness is that it has happened to a father of an Air Force personnel, who is serving to protect the country from external threats. Akhlaq's eldest son, Sartaj is with IAF. Air Chief Marshal Arup Raha termed it as an 'unfortunate incident', and promised to move the air warrior's family out of their area of a residence to a secure air force area.
It is quite incredible that the AkhileshYadav government in U.P. has sent pieces of meat in the refrigerator for a forensic test to find out whether it is beef. Does that mean if the results proved to be positive, Mr. Akhlaq deserved to die? This is part of the idiosyncrasy that is taking place along with the irrational deeds of the political class, both of which damage the unity and harmony of a nation.
This is not the first such incident. However, something is different this time around. Although the account of the incident is on every news channel, the government refuses to acknowledge it, and Prime Minister NarendraModi's silence in this regard is especially deafening. While, he cannot be responsible for every incident anywhere in the country, the person who tweets about Billiards championship, can certainly do more to set a moral tone for the country, and calm the situation using his own digital capability. There is no doubt that the Hindutva brigade is getting emboldened since Modi took office, and his silence is interpreted by many as tacit approval of the actions of these far right groups.
One of the known BJP tactics includes creating panic and polarizing communities ahead of an election. This has happened in Muzaffarnagar, UP before the 2014 Parliament election. I recollect visiting the town and a refugee camp in the aftermath. I have heard story after story directly from many in that Jat community, detailing how Hindus and Muslims were living side by side for centuries without serious incidents. However, an auto accident involving young people was used as a pretext to create a wedge between two communities, and the subsequent riots resulted in the death of 60 people and rendered about 5000 people homeless. The violence of this degree did help to consolidate the Hindu Jat vote bank, and delivered almost all of the Lok Sabha seats from western U.P. to the BJP. As the local elections are fast approaching, one could not discount the possibility of incitement in this case.
One of the ironies about the cow slaughter debate is that India retains its top spot as the world's largest exporter of beef, according to data released by the U.S. Department of Agriculture, and has extended its lead over the next highest exporter, Brazil. According to the data, India exported 2.4 million tones of beef and veal in FY2015, compared to 2 million tones by Brazil and 1.5 million by Australia. There is also misconception that beef is consumed only by Muslims and Christians, however, poor Tribals and Dalits sustained themselves by consuming beef all throughout the history.
Dadri reminds us of the depth of hatred and barbarism that still exists in the society, and how it is being practiced and nurtured for political ends as some kind of a devotion to the Hindu Rashtra. The people in the rural areas, and many from the backward castes are increasingly falling prey to the Sangh Parivar's divisive rhetoric, and taking the law unto their own hands.
While Modi is touring continents and rubbing shoulders with tech CEOs, and promoting the transfer of technology and inviting investments, Mahesh Sharma, his Minister of State for Culture said the following; "we will cleanse every area of public discourse that has been westernized and where Indian culture and civilization need to be restored – be it the history we read, our cultural heritage or our institutes that have been polluted over the years."
For Sharma, globalization is a one-way street. Promoting Yoga on a worldwide stage or sharing India's culture, food and festivals in various capitals may be fine with him. But his appeal to the rest of the world may sound like this: bring in only the money and the soft code! There is no doubt that these regressive policies are part of a deliberate and larger effort to transform India, and to impose upper caste culture on all Indians. Sadhvi Prachi, a BJP leader known for her controversial remarks justified the Dadri lynching. "Those who consume beef deserve such action against them".
The ongoing saffronization of secular institutions, and the silence of those who are in power when minorities are attacked may only lead to more political instability and social disharmony at home. Speaking on a seminar on communal amity, Vice-President of India, Hamid Ansari said the following: 'article 21 of the Constitution provides for right to life and it was the responsibility of not only the government but people as well to ensure that every Indian is secure. "We have our own religious books, but as a citizen, the constitution is one religious book. It says the right to life is a basic right of every citizen" he said.

Try to hurt religious feelings of Muslims in a Muslim majority country; you will find who goes there for you first, police or Mob.

Also, who will make the determination as to what is a reasonable act for hurting one's religious feelings. Obviously, it has to a religious person, and not an atheist, like you.
I don't think you know the Hindu sentiment about cows. Please read their religious scriptures to find out what 'cow' represents in the scripture, before rushing to conclusion about slaughtering cows in a majority Hindu country. Again, the law is for the citizen of that country; it's not about what you or I think about this matter.
Also, I don't think Christian can demand selling pork meat in the open markets of the Muslim countries. I know, they will not even ask for it, because it will hurt the religious feelings of Muslims, and they will be lynched for sure.
Your suggestion for Hindus to buy all cows to save them from slaughter house is quite absurd and ridiculous.
Sorry!

Well, Dr. Roy, you wrote "could be lynched or persecuted." As I already wrote, if beef ban was the law (a stupid and unjust law anyway), the police could go to that house with a warrant (search or arrest); but the mob had no business there. Lynching or persecution should not have been expected from a civilized state/population.

If billions of Hindus have a religious sentiment for cows, they should try to buy up all the cows with fair market price and handle them with whatever reverence they have for the cows. If they are civilized human beings, they would not have any right to persecute anyone for slaughtering his cow and eating its meat. Yes, slaughtering cows should not be banned by any state of a modern, civilized and fair country, as long as eating meat is not a crime anywhere in the world, including in India. Again, if the Hindu majority of India wish to minimize the slaughtering of cows, they should try to buy up all the cows for fair price; they should put their money where there stupid mind is. They probably  would not be able to totally stop it; because not all non-Hindus would be likely to sell their cows even for fair or higher-than-fair market price.

Hurting religious sentiments is a matter of first to decide on what is reasonable for a sentiment. Let me give an example. If someone slaughters a cow in front of a Hindu temple, that would be like hurting a Hindu religious sentiment. But if a cow is slaughtered on a non-Hindu's property without displaying the gore or cruelty to the animal to the public or to a non-consenting guest, that should not be treated as hurting anyone's religious sentiment. However, when a religious sentiment goes against people's human and citizenship rights, that sentiment should be ditched without caring about what religion it came from.

Dr. Bain, remember, I am not talking about what right or wrong here; I am simply saying - transporting beef or keeping beef in the house in a state, where beef is banned is a risky business and punishable by law. It's like keeping banned item in your possession. Yet, people will venture into that territory in spite of the risk. Those who do so may be doing it to protest against ban or something.
If you want to eat beef in the state, where it is banned, that's a violation of law. In order to eat beef there, you have to, first, change the law in that state or you have to go to a state where beef eating is not banned.  That's what is logical argument should be. I don't know what's your argument is in this case.
You are not taking into account that - there is a strong religious feeling for cows among billions of Hindus. It does not matter what's your opinion about it. That's the fact.
Did you give a thought about it before saying that slaughtering cows should be allowed all over India, where 85% are Hindus? Definitely not.
You think non-Hindus should be given the right to hurt religious feelings of billions of Hindus there, but, you don't want to give Hindus the similar right to hurt religious feelings of the non-Hindus there. These are all logical arguments, you should have taken into account before objection to my argument.

I find Dr. Roy's 'flipside' statement illogical and highly objectionable. The gentleman who was murdered surely did not think that he had a risk of being lynched for keeping beef in his fridge; he most likely did not think that Hindus could be that kind of barbarians. He should not have been persecuted in any way for keeping or eating beef. It is a shame on the Indian pluralistic democracy to have a beef ban in quite a few of the country's provinces. India needs to educate/civilize its Hindus in this regard and lift all the bans on eating beef. In this regard, all they could demand as sensible people is that cow and other animals should be slaughtered in facilities that are hygienic and away from public views.

Dr. Roy's 'flipside' statement sounds like the murdered Muslim gentleman and his family were guilty of something. They were not guilty of any crime here; and the barbarian Hindu mob had no business of demanding to know what people kept in their fridge. If that province had a beef ban, the police had to get a warrant to search that house. Again, of course, there should have been no such ban, and all sensible people should have objected even the police searching that house for that purpose.

It is extremely disappointing that the police took samples of the meat to find out if it was beef or mutton. They should be prosecuted for doing that. They would have had a valid reason to take the sample only if that meat were suspected to be human meat.

Killing over beef eating is insanity, and murderer(s) should be punished to the fullest extent of the law.
On the flipside, this also shows – how far someone will go to eat beef, knowing that he/she could be lynched or persecuted for doing so.
Had anybody been lynched for similar incidents while congress was in power?
I believe there must be many, but not too many heard of them. Why is it now such a national movement and an international story? It's because - BJP is in power now, and Modi is extremely popular.
Opposition has exhausted all political cards against him, nothing worked. They are, now, left with only one card, which is 'communality,' and BJP is vulnerable to it.
Unfortunate sacrificial lambs of this communal politics games are religious minorities. Unknowingly, they will participate without realizing why they are doing so.
Incidentally, beef politics is also going on full-fledged in Bangladesh, where, recently, some people slaughtered cow on the Hindu temple ground. Politics of beef everywhere.
