Re: [mukto-mona] Makkah Conference on Inter-Faith Dialogue: Stirrings of a New Beginning?

WRT: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/mukto-mona/message/48714

In the ancient times and middle ages when God was alive, his assorted
followers were busy establishing the faith of their own groups. That
sometimes needed annihilation of the opponents along with mass conversion.
Now that God is dead, those followers are trying to help each other while
remembering the dead and stinking deity. Doesn't God deserve even a
decent farewell ceremony?

Voila! The resident virago back with her pet obsession! Farida Majid's
pig-headed insistence on playing the buffoon is about to begin yet

sing her praises, claiming that no one should have the "audacity" to
challenge her boorishness.

Rail on, Farida Majid! You must be preparing to send your fan club your
usual e-mails claiming that everyone from your ancestors to your

being harassed just because she is the world's sole repository of all

I can't wait for the whining session that is certain to begin yet again.

Re: [mukto-mona] Makkah Conference on Inter-Faith Dialogue: Stirrings of a New Beginning?

WRT: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/mukto-mona/message/48695

This is yet another good piece from Yogi. Those who still have negative impression about him should read it Yogi did not attend the conference (the conference was held in Mecca and a non-Muslim cannot enter Mecca) and based his write-up on the newspaper reports. If one reads his article, he will find that he is critical of fiercely intolerant Wahhabi Islam which is sponsored by Saudi monarchs. He believes that both ininterreligious and intrareligious dialogs are essential for social and political harmony. It seems he does not have much to hope from the kind of conference recently held in Mecca because of the location and also to some extent because of people who organized it. He has also emphasized an important point: many world problems are not purely religious, they are economic and political too. So talks merely between various religious groups will not be enough. More broad based dialogs are essential.

RE: [mukto-mona] Constitution review: Not a worthy interest right now

WRT: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/mukto-mona/message/48608

This is an extremely important subject whose importance is undermined by the unintelligible title of the piece by Ripan Kumar Biswas. What does he mean by "Not a worthy interest rigth now"? It is possible that he does not mean what that phrase expresses, in which case I would attribute the confusion of meaning to the lapse of the writer's command of the English language.

Any time, and all the time in all activities undertaken by a democratic State the Constitution should provide the guiding principle.

What is Law of the Land but the guaranteed constitutional protection of the individual freedom and rights of all its inhabitants?

I have no doubt Ripan Biswas belives in that. He has reported that Rashed Khan Menon and Motia Chowdhury (both happen to be my childhood friends) have protested, in seperate staatements, against this unelected goverment's desire to "review" the Constitutoion. Only a duly elected Parliament can engage in that kind of activity.

What stands between mob frenzy or rank majoritarianism and a democratic polity? It is the Constitution. Please read my relevant article published in the New Age on Saturday, June 14, 2008:

http://www.newagebd.com/oped.html

We need to generate more discussions on this matter in order to deepen our understanding of secularism as a constitutional principle. Childish pitter-patter on religion vs science will not do the job.

Regards.

RE: [ALOCHONA] Awami League in Election: My prediction came out to be true

Mr.Sajjad,
We all know that AL is a election oriented political party in Bangladesh. If u forecast it a couple of weeks ago,its does not mean u r very intelligent.AL and its supporters belive fair and free Election is the only way to go to Power.CTG's advisors specially Dr.Hossein Jillur Rahman working hard for a meaningfull dialogue and a fair election.AL must cooperate them.

Now BNP is not a countable political party in Bangladesh. In absent of Khleda they are devided by three.Delwar Group Hannan Shah Group n Major Hafiz Group. If Delwar is main leader of BNP
I want to refer here an artical in Prothom Alo 12/06/08 about ur great leader Khondakar Delwar.Pls read it.http://www.prothom-alo.com/archive/news_details_home.php?dt=2008-06-12&issue_id=951&nid=MTY2NTU=

So tell me,is there any alternative of AL to go to power in free and fair election? Why AL should abstain from election?

Subject: [ALOCHONA] Awami League in Election: My prediction came out to be true

Dear Alochoks,

Only couple of weeks ago I posted that Awami League would participate
in the next election. Their election boycot declaration was merely a cat and mouse game.
See as soon as Sheikh Hasina is declared to set free by the Free and Fair Judiciary (according to Alochok Ezajur and Right Hand Man of Desher Daroan), Awami League has decided to join the election. The big rumor in Dhaka is that Govt. has also given a huge amount of money to the Awami League Leaderships.

Re: [mukto-mona] Fw: Not a single poor in Bangladesh after 2030

WRT: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/mukto-mona/message/48699

Dear members,

Assalamu Alaikum.I agree it is possible to eradicate poverty from Bangladesh by 2030 or from other countries, though I would not talk in terms of challenge.

However I do not think poverty can be removed if corporate capitalism which is profit hungry, social darwinist with no concern in its literature for poor and deprived can remove poverty.

For that we would require a different market and free enterprise system with sense of justice and social welfare orentation and some interventions by the state authorities . .

You can call it moral economics or capitalism with a human face or Islamic economics or reformed socialism or free market with justice or any other name but it should not be totally reckless capitalism.

[ALOCHONA] All is well with our bureaucracy

I happened to meet one of the top adviser – I just took a chance to put forward the recent problems faced by our fellow Bangaladeshis in Saudi Arabia.

With his permission I started, saying how only the Bangladeshi teen aged are barred from living in this country with an unwritten/undeclared rule. He just said when it is unwritten it is a problem to face it. However, I continued explaining and requested him if he could put up the matter with the authorities as any way he is going to meet them. The ambassador and the consul general were with him.

As the matter is well known, I could not figure out whether he was listening seriously or not. Before he said any think consul general started - I have already written to the authority and talking to the concerned authority.. I have been arguing with them- you have given the permission to operate A level classes so most of the students fall in the age category of 18. However, to my knowledge I do not know any one who has been sent back and this rule apply to all not only to Bangladeshis. I have asked people to make a list of those families etc. - and like wise he continued for a while non stop.

I said, sir, one of my colleague's son waiting for three months for the permission. - Oh no, mainly it is affecting only those who are not actually entitled for the family status but some how made it before. So they are only implementing that rule now. And they are catching not only our people but others as well. Yeh, that day they made a raid ….

Then the ambassador spoke – sir, you know that there was an website where all posting were made against Bangladeshis and that impacted on the Saudis greatly. With difficulties I traced the domain and its location. Written to the ministry of finance with all the details and the website was closed down (I read the man was arrested for a while, though the ambassador did not mention). We are trying hard and the situation is more improved now.

The authority is mainly after those who are not entitled or due to some other's nasty records. (he even sighted few bad examples in front of the adviser). He asked me to give him an example as he already asked people to come up with the cases. I sighted an example who's daughter had to leave. He asked his name and place of work. I complied with the name of the company. Oh no, it is a big company. I said, sir, he is a Chartered Accountant and working for around 20 years and his daughter left already. How would you handle individual case, rather you need to look into the matter as an issue (as he was insisting on giving him names of the people). He still continued - many girls are getting married ……, many boys are doing unlawful things etc. …we are working hard, next year there will be many people coming (he gave a number) and this is a temporary phenomena and so on.

When two of the highest officials presented the case to the adviser such a way I feared that advisor wouldn't even think of the matter and certainly went back home with an impression that things are in good hand and under control.

As we are walking together I said you need to increase the number of staff in your consulates and you have to improve on your PR. The ambassador looked at me and we proceeded to our own directions.

I happen to meet few secretaries. I have witnessed how the assistants keep mum when their boss speaks and how the assistants are shut up or interrupted while they are still talking.

The old adviser did not stop either of them but the way they spoke to their boss symbolises the culture of our bureaucracy.

While I am writing this I called a friend whose two daughters remain stuck here while their mid term university class has already started in Dhaka. Their brother is being asked to leave but desperate father still trying hard. (the girls are already living in Dhaka but if they loose their residency, they have to apply for visa each time they want to visit their parents). The great worry befallen onto my friend and his children, the ambassador and the consul general can not comprehend as all is well with them.

[ALOCHONA] Selling our interests, our estate

Bangabandhu was put in Jail for years together, and an uncompromising leader was in making.

Hasina, whom he praised and offered green pass, confined her. She became impatient from the day one and was finding a way to get out by any cost. Eventually she is out with henna painted hands and onto her cherished land where all her siblings lives and prospers.

Two thinks striking me so nervously- 1. how far we should still rely on to their (both) leadership, 2. not only their leadership qualities but on to their patriotism.

Even for a small ill they run to foreign hospitals never felt hesitant. Strange enough a great majority of the so called PHDs, professors, professionals and tied to the soil(?) writers never utter a word why the leaders did not built our own health care system. We call these professors our conscious!

Irony is, energy wasted to mutilate Ayub and Yahia still today, surprisingly finds no taste and courage to decry nearly four decades of squandering and loot. Even all the basic industries that were set up disappeared today, alas no question is raised or raised so vaguely.

Though many will hysterically argue but it is fact that both our leaders has compromised our stake holding in the statehood and sold out to foreign interests. Only difference is one give more discount to India than others, and other give less discount to India than others.

Our sovereignty put on stake everyday in the frontier, in the energy mines, yet a band of loonies otherwise so revolutionary successfully blindfolds the nation from the issues.

Present ruler is a mixture of Ayub's doctrine and Ershad's fight against corruption, successfully crafted an apparent calm, however is taken, will only led them to the same trash where there predecessors found their place.

A group professing an unrealistic hope and aspiration seems only to obliterate those who have been framing this nation under their coterie interest and aspiration. I do not see a genuine concern anywhere!

Subject: [TriTioMatra] Part:2: War criminal and Collaborator: A K M Yousuf (Acting Ameer of Jamaat)

MAULANA A K M YOUSUF, village-Rajoir, Thana-Saran Khola, District-Bagerhat. Presently he is the acting Ameer of the Jamaat-e-Islami Bangladesh. He was one of the leading anti-liberation organizers during the 1971 war. As part of his role in the anti-liberation activities he became a member of Malek cabinet during the war. After the liberation war AKM Yusuf was arrested on charge of collaborating with Pakistan army and sentenced with many other members of Malek cabinet.

He first formed 'Razakar Bahini' comprising 96 members of Jamaat-e-Islami in Khulna district. He became the leader of the Jamaat well before the freedom War started. He started his anti-Bangladesh role and cooperating the Pakistani forces as soon as the war began on March 25. His responsibilities were to issue statement, organize the anti-liberation forces and lead attacks, killing, looting and arson by his groups. He also helped the members of the Pakistani forces to do the same.

His statements published in the newspapers where he opposed the liberation war and urged the collaborators to resist the pro-liberation forces. On October 10, 1971, this anti-liberation leader praised activities of the Razakars in a public rally and said, "we will have to make the people understand that the so-called Bangladesh concept is created by Indian authorities is valueless. Naxalaits, separatists and criminals are trying to create anarchy in this part of the country. They should be ousted by root." (Genocide '71, Muktijuddha Chetana Bikish Kendra, Dhaka, February 1987).

On October 26, at a gathering in Sylhet, he said, "a section of ignorant youths inspired by Indian propaganda has been unleashing separatist activities on our land. You spread over every nook and corner of the country to resist this movement and uproot the concept of so-called Bengali nationalism". He warned the allied forces saying, "Had there been any war imposed on them, then heroes of Razakar and soldiers would face with all courage." On November 12, 1971, he praised the Razakar activities while visiting Razakar camps in Shatkhira. He commented, "the Razakars have been doing their best to resist the spies and intruders of India". He also assured the Razakars that he would provide them with government jobs.

On November 28, while he was discussing with newsmen in Karachi, Yousuf said that the Razakar have been working hand in hand with the soldiers. He demanded supply of modern arms to the hands of razakars to eliminate freedom fighters. "now the number of Razakar and Al-shams stood to some 1 lakh. Apart from them, there were Mujahid bahini also. They all are in guarding the borders along with the soldiers. The razakars have been operating successfully resulting in reduce of criminal activities". (Ibid)

Guljan Bibi, a mother of martyr Shahid Seikh, informed that one Razakar Khaleq Member asked her son to join in the Razakar Bahini during the monsoon of freedom War. As Shahid rejected his proposal, the member called him out a month after. On the same day she learnt that her son was handed to the Pakistani forces. Later she rushed to the founder of the Razakar force, Maolana A K M Yousuf and requested him to free his son. At that time Khaleq Member was also with Yousuf who turned down her request. Guljan Bibi did not get her son back, later she came to learn that Pakistanis killed her son. Guljan demanded trial of her son's killing.

Yousuf along with his associates Khaleque and Adam Ali had killed number of males and females during the war. They raped many women. These information were disclosed by the citizens of Khulna, but still after 24 years of independence they are tight lipped for the sake of their own security. One of them told the commission that Yousuf forced many people from his own area Morelganj to join in the Razakar force. He forced them to work against the liberation war.

Yousuf's headquarters was the then 'Ghost House' which is now being used as district Anasr camp. This camp was the prime torture centre. Apart from this they used to torture the freedom-loving people at Khulna Shipyard, Bhashani Biddalaya and many other camps. They also killed people at such places wherever they felt comfortable. They handed over the innocent Bengalis to Pakistani Army stationed at the prime camp Circuit House, and other makeshift camps at Helipad, Naval base, hotel Shahin, Asiana Hotel etc. The Razakar and other fundamentalist forces maintained regular connection with the camps. They used to kill the people at Gallamari, forest Ghat, Station road and some other places.

[ALOCHONA] Re: Treatment abroad: Who needs it more Tarek ?Koko? or Hasina? a great leader cant accept such proposal

Mr. Aminul Islam, this is so mean, heartless and brutal as usual politics of BNP, which questions Sheikh Hasina's health condition and starts comparing with Coco or Taraque's health condition immediately after she has been released!

Before Sheikh Hasina even left Bangladesh; BNP shows its real ugly face and starts its frontal attack on her and questions government's neutrality because of allowing her to go abroad for treatment. Khaleda Zia through her lawyers demanded government to release Sheikh Hasina to go abroad for treatment not mentioning her son's treatment abroad even for a single time now questions government neutrality when Sheikh Hasina has been released. This shows how evasive pitiless mind she has and how futile her gesture toward Hasina's release were.

Like my self, most of the people were distrustful about BNP's demand for Sheikh Hasina's release for better treatment abroad. Recalling BNP's past history we knew Khaleda Zia and her party must have some hidden schema (Dal Ma Kuch Kala Hay) in their head for asking Hasina's release for treatment abroad. Now it is clear like crystal (JOLOBOT TOROLONG), they wanted her release not because of their concern for her health but merely to put their plight with hers.

I am not questioning Taraque or Koko's health condition; no doubt, there health condition is frail. Nevertheless, their demand of release of Taraque and Coco refer to Sheikh Hasina's release is not just malicious but spitefully nasty. They could have placed their demand independently not by questioning Sheikh Hasina's release.

Since Taraque's arrest until now, Taraque Rahman stayed in hospital for most of the time similar to Arafat Rahman Koko when Sheikh Hasina treatment was denied. Did Awami League ever questioned governments neutrality and asked Sheikh Hasina to be admitted because of Taraque, Koko or Falu dholus are enjoying medical treatment facility? No, never. Awami League does not believe in politics of cruelty. Mr. Aminul, that is where Awami League and BNP politics is at variance.

Nation vividly remember cruel tasteless comments BNP and Jamaat leaders made when on August 21st of 2004 grenade attack was mounted on Sheikh Hasina's life. Twenty six life was lost including Ivy Rahman wife of Awami League present acting chief , thousand wounded, many of them was crippled for life. BNP blamed Awami League and Sheikh Hasina for the tragedy as a planed play.

After consulting Taraque Zia, BNP minister Casio Babar brought fabricated charge against innocent Joge miah, Partho Shaha, Awami League ward commissioner of Dhaka City Corp and some others. We did not forget for a moment all the travesty they fool around with ULFA and so many other mind-boggling phony bogus stories.

Mr. Aminul, now the nation knows who were behind the brutal heinous crime of August 21st of 2004. It was none but BNP-Jamaat alliance. The entire plan to kill Sheikh Hasina and top leaders of Awami League was chalked out under direct supervision of son of Gen. Zia and Khaleda Zia the then prime minister of four party alliance government.

Getting direct order from the then most powerful man in the country Taraque Zia, former BNP education Minister Abdus Salam Pintu carried out the assault with the help of international terrorist organizations. Gen. Zia started the ruthless killing mission by masterminding Bangabandhu killing along with most of his family members and four of our national leaders in jail. Gen. Zia's son Taraque Zia took up the cause and laid the vicious plan to complete his father's incomplete task by killing the last survivors of Bangabandhu family and rest of Awami leaders.

Truth always prevails (Dhormer Kol Batasha Nora) though it might take some extra turns and times, former BNP education minister Abdus Salam Pintu now languishing behind the bar on charges of August 21st grenade attack on Sheikh Hasina's life. The rest of the story is waiting to be unearthed to haunt Zia family.

Therefore, I am not surprised to see BNP-Jamaat verbal assault on Sheikh Hasina when nation knows about their numerous physical attacks on her life. There is no reason to believe they will bother about her health condition when they wanted her to be killed on August 21st of 2004.

Now we know there is no way BNP can change their tradition of roguish, wicked, mischievous politics ever. BNP Politics, which draw out of sprayed bullet, will never understand the power of ballot. Democracy is not what they believe in but dictatorship is where they took birth off. Graciousness is not what they practice but nuisance is how they prevailed, but surely, this is bound to doom today or tomorrow.

Sincerely
Shamim Chowdhury

If Hasina was a true great leader with human feelings she did not leave

Correct attitude to boost democracy

Ripan Kumar Biswas

Ripan.Biswas@yahoo.com

He used the word 'change' 16 times in his speech, but he gave two paragraphs to Hillary Clinton, whom the crowd greeted with sustained applause.

"Our party and our country are better off because of her, and I am a better candidate for having had the honor to compete with Hillary Rodham Clinton," Sen. Barack Obama (ILL) valuated Sen. Hillary Clinton's (NY) milestones in her career in front of a rally at the Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul, Minnesota on Tuesday, June 3, 2008 after clinching the Democratic Party's 2008 nomination for president. It was not just praise for Clinton, but an attempt to revive the Clinton brand.

On the other hand, she issued a call for unity that emphasized the cultural and political milestones that she and Obama represent. Amid tears from her supporters, she summoned supporters to use their energy, their passion, their strength to put Barack Obama in the White House at the National Building Museum in Washington on Saturday, June 07, 2008. "I congratulate him on the victory he has won and the extraordinary race he has run," Clinton placed herself solidly behind her Senate colleague from Illinois.

According to the White House spokeswoman Dana Perino, President Bush congratulated Sen. Obama as according to his personal experience, presidential nominating process is a grueling one and Sen. Obama came a long way in becoming his party's nominee and his historic achievement reflects the fact that the country has come a long way, too. Also Republican nominee-in-waiting John McCain (AZ) called him to congratulate him for becoming the presumptive Democratic nominee.

The reason to quote the speeches and remarks of the above politicians against their rivals is to mention the respects in politics and respect public opinion in where political sovereignty is retained by the people.

According to her lawyers before boarding for US on Thursday, June 12, 2008, Sheikh Hasina, the chief of Awami League (AL), told that if their party would be rewarded the driving seat of the parliament in the next general elections, they would do their best for the general people and strong measures would be taken to uproot the corruption from the soil of Bangladesh. The same she promised in front of a huge crowd and newsmen at Logan International Airport, Boston on Friday, June 13, 2008.  "People want the long-stalled parliamentary polls to be held without delay and handover of power to a democratic government," she said.

As we all know on October 1, 2001, AL responded to its landslide election defeat by announcing a boycott of parliament by saying that her party would neither take oath as members of parliament nor join the parliament. When Begum Khaleda Zia, chairperson of Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), was in the opposition from 1996 to 2001, she too boycotted parliament.

This is not a new to discuss or not a worthy attitude to find negatives all the times. We are not going to cite what were in the main features of AL's Election Manifesto in 2001. Was it talking about the institutionalizing democracy that refers the National Parliament would be the centre of all political activities? Or was it talking about the good governance and administrative reforms that refer corruption-free and people-oriented administration?

In this changing world and modern shape of democracy, people are now very much concerned about how a person or a group or a political entity behaves with each others. To establish a proper balance between the individual, the society, and the government for civilization and human progress, a rationale for politics and an ethic of public behavior are important. In politics, to provide an objective, quantified approach to explaining and predicting political behavior, tact, diplomacy, and hospitality are essential.

How the former Premier was released from prison after an apparent deal between the military-backed interim government and her party to facilitate her treatment overseas, might raise question due procedures of law and order, but the conversation between her and the chief adviser Dr. Fakhruddin Ahmed over phone regarding the upcoming polls and her health condition hours after her release, was a good sign of respect against each other. Presence of Bangladesh envoys to UK and US at Heathrow and Logan airport, respectively, to welcome Hasina, was another change of traditional Bangladesh government's attitude towards any of its high profile opposition leader.

Although political leaders from different political parties expressed mixed reactions on her release, but people became happy while the former Premier Begum Khaleda Zia expressed satisfaction over the release of her once arch rival opposition leader of the parliament Sheikh Hasina. It is to be noted that Sajeeb Wazed Joy, Sheikh Hsina's son and US based software professional, refused one letter of greetings from Tareq Zia, son of Khaleda Zia, congratulating him on his first arrival in Dhaka with his American wife on Wednesday, December 22, 2008.

On humanitarian considerations and a smooth, orderly transition to democratic governance following the promised general elections, the present government would take necessary steps for proper treatment of BNP chairperson and her two sons for their various ailments at home and abroad after completing legal procedures. This will surely uphold the level playing attitude towards everyone and will pave the way for the present dispensation to make a good example for Bangladesh political arena.

There's always a vast gap between the country's problems, candidates' agendas, and people's expectation. Politicians in Bangladesh aren't perfectly truthful and respective towards each other because some cases of honesty would keep them from getting elected. Politics is mostly about offering up convenient scapegoats and instant solutions for voters' complaints, even if the villains and promises are often false. Of course, people want their politicians to be candid, but they also want them to respect their opinions and other candidates' opinion.

Former British Prime Minister Tony Blair was confronted by a ticket inspector as he traveled to London's Heathrow airport to catch a flight to the United States on Monday, April 21, 2008. In 2001 while Blair was in power, his wife Cherie was forced to pay a ten-pound fine plus a 7.90-pound fare when she was caught traveling to Luton from London Blackfriars without a ticket. People always appreciate to see their leaders to live as commoner because people construct attitudes based on their own personal experiences as well as the indirect experiences passed on through socialization. This is why, the Nepal's deposed king Gyanendra, would have some degree of public sympathy as he respected the abolition of the centuries-old Himalayan monarchy.

To earn the trust and confidence of the citizen, political leaders in Bangladesh must continue to demonstrate their correct attitude and spirit of unity to regain hope to re-establish democracy.
