Persona probe not done in a month

The police investigation committee into the Persona affair has sought a fourth extension to its deadline.Gulshan zone deputy commissioner Lutfur Kabir told bdnews24.com on Wednesday that the team had asked for another 10 days to look into the illicit use of CCTV cameras at the popular beauty parlour chain.

The team, which was formed on Oct 3, is led by Gulshan zone additional deputy commissioner Nizamul Hauqe Molla. The other two members are assistant commissioners Mizanur Rahman and Nurul Alam. They were initially given three days to submit a report. The panel had the deadline stretched by five days each in two phases on Oct 5 and 13, before getting another extension, this time by 10 days, on Oct 20.

When asked why the probe was not complete even after a month, Lutful Kabir said, "One of the members had to go to a special training during the investigation. When he returned he was assigned to the Narayanganj elections."Right now another member is in Saudi Arabia for hajj," he added.

A doctor who went to the parlour's Banani Road 11 branch on Sep 30 for a spa found a CCTV in her dressing room after she used it.The woman made a verbal complaint with police and the media for filming her.The following day Persona owner Kaniz Almas told bdnews24.com that the cameras were there for security reasons and she did not think they were violating anyone's privacy. The revelation caused much uproar in the media, social networking sites and blogs about the use of CCTV cameras at beauty parlours.

The High Court ordered the government on Oct 10 to take out all such cameras following a writ petition filed by Bangladesh Human Rights Foundation.

[ALOCHONA] Focus on conflicts within AL

Focus on conflicts within AL

Dispute over control of Narsingdi Chhatra League, competition over
getting the position of district Awami League president and Lokman
Hossain's voice against the drug trade and crime are some of the
reasons for his murder, Awami League insiders and locals have claimed.

The Daily Star yesterday talked to over 100 people, including leaders
of the Chhatra League, close aides of Lokman, locals, and journalists,
about the killing of the Narsingdi municipality mayor on Tuesday
night.

The Officer-in-Charge of Narsingdi Police Station, Anwar Hossain, said
Lokman had been vocal against drug trade and criminal activities. Many
criminals had a grudge against him on this account.

He said it was a well planned assassination. "We have already started
investigations by taking all these into account."

Talking to The Daily Star, almost everyone said Narsingdi district
Chhatra League was clearly divided into two.

Lokman backed the Shah Alam Bhuiyan-led faction of the Chhatra League.
Shah Alam is the president of Narsingdi district Chhatra League.
Lokman's younger brother Shamim Newaz, general secretary of the
district Chhatra League and Vice-President of Narsingdi Govt College
unit of Chhatra League, also backed this faction.

However, Posts and Telecommunications Minister Razi Uddin Ahmed Raju,
elected from Narsingdi-5 constituency, backed Rehanul Islam Lelin,
joint general secretary of the district Chhatra League. The minister's
brother Salahuddin Ahmed Bacchu also backs Sajjad Hossin, acting
general secretary of Narsingdi Govt College unit of Chhatra League,
locals told The Daily Star.

On October 22, the Shah Alam Bhuiyan-led Chhatra League faction
declared Minister Razi Uddin Ahmed persona non grata in Narsingdi over
"the minister's misdeeds and unsocial activities".

On that day, supporters of Shah Alam and Shamim Newaz brought out a
procession with brooms against the minister and demanded his
resignation, witnesses told The Daily Star.

Shah Alam and Shamim Newaz also expelled Lelin and Sajjad from their
respective posts in the Chhatra League for their "activities against
the party".

Locals told The Daily Star that the row between the minister and
Lokman also intensified over who would be getting the president's post
of Narsingdi district Awami League.

Lokman and the minister's brother Salahuddin had both been lobbying
for the position, they said.

Yesterday a large number of people who The Daily Star talked to said
Lokman was very popular because of his pro-people activities.

"A kind-hearted mayor like Lokman is rare in our country. We might get
another person as mayor but we will not get a mayor like him," Razia
Sultana, councillor of Narsingdi municipality, said.

"He [Lokman] declared a war on drugs and criminal activities in this
area. This went against a vested quarter and might have cost him his
life," Yesmin Sultana, another councillor, said.

"He simply changed the face of Narsingdi, made it clean, built parks,
constructed and repaired many roads, bus stands, launch terminals,
Eidgah Maidan and so many other things for the people," said Jewel, a
businessman.

Re: [mukto-mona] Jamaat-e-Islami Pakistan---JI believes in service to minorities also

Jut one factor is missing from the otherwise near perfect statement from JI, and that is Hindus of Pakistan. It seems like - JI has tactfully avoided them from the equation. Is this another divide-and-rule policy?

JI believes in service to minorities also

LAHORE , Nov. 1: The Jamaat e Islami chief,  Syed Munawar Hasan, has said that the JI believed in service to humanity irrespective of religious differences. Addressing a gathering of the Muslims an the Christians at Islamabad , he said that the Christians and other minorities in Pakistan are equal citizens and enjoy equal rights.   He assured the minorities that the JI on coming to power would fully protect their basic rights. He also invited the Christians for a joint struggle against tyranny and oppression.

He said that the People of the Book were all brothers. However, he said the minorities and the Christians had genuine complaints that they were treated as second rate citizens. This was because a big chunk of the Muslims did not know basic Islamic teachings.  He said according to the teachings of the Quran and the Sunnah, a Christian neighbor had all the rights given by Allah and His Prophet (pbuh).  He said it was the responsibility of the Muslims majority to help the Christian brethren in their difficulty and try to mitigate their sufferings. He said if every Muslim knew basic Islamic teachings, he would make every sacrifice for his Christian brothers. Syed Munawar Hasan said that the JI had offered every possible help to the Christians in difficulties such as natural calamities such as floods, earthquakes, etc.

He pointed out that members of the minorities had also been elected to the assemblies on the JI ticket. He said that in Pakistan , the Muslim majority as also the minorities were equally suffering because of the corruption of the rulers, price hike, load shedding, and insecurity. He said that the tyrants were neither Muslims nor Christians and the entire nation must
