Re: [mukto-mona] Memory Lane : Muhammad Ali Jinna's declaration of State language of Pakistan in Dhaka.

Mr. Bain if you could have been a "bastard" child how could you be responsible for this status?. Mr. Jinnah's language decision was an arrogant blander and a clear understimation of majority Bangalis. Given his role in subcontinental politics from much earlier period to Mr. Gandhi and Mr.Nehru does not match with his 1948 speech. If he was not dead in illness he would have surely been assasinated like Liaqat Ali khan. His 1st speech as a Muhajeer PM of Pakistan was completely disliked by the then other communal Pakistani politicians. He is by born a Bombay man.

Pakistan was absolutely noting to be proud of for any honorable person. May be, some honorable people like A. K. Fazlul Huq had "their brain in their pockets" when they worked for creating Pakistan. Jinnah was basically a bastard son who was an accessory to the rape of his mother(land). How could he be expected to respect the people of Pakistan?

Muhammad Ali Jinna's declaration of State language of Pakistan in Dhaka.

Declaration of "Urdu, and no other language" at civic reception at Ramna Race Course Maidan
On 21 March 1948, Jinnah addressed a huge public rally at the Ramna Race Course Maidan (currently Suhrawardy Uddyan), where he warned the people of East Bengal to be on guard against the activities of "subversive elements" out to divide and destroy Pakistani Muslims. In his long speech Jinnah spoke about conspiracies by communists and fifth columnists (or internal mischief makers) to undo Pakistan. He warned that no mercy would be shown to quislings (i.e. traitors who collaborate with enemies), though he did not mention who the quislings were. Jinnah further declared that "Urdu, and no other language" embodied the spirit of Muslim nations and would remain as the state language, labelling those who disagreed with his views as "Enemies of Pakistan".

This young Bangladeshi-American can not be a pride of Bangladesh. Because she considers and calls herself a Muslim American. She probably feels overjoyed and ecstatic with her Muslim identity abandoning her Bengali heritage. This is a new phenomenon, which is happening more and more among Western living South Asians of Islamic faith. Compared to this bizarre situation, you may hardly find any Indian-American of Hindu faith who calls himself or herself a Hindu-American. And what about Polish-American, Hungarian-American, German-American? Do they call themselves Christian-Americans? Why Muslims have to resort to utopian Ummatic identity?

Currently I am living in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. I doubt if any expatriate Bangladeshi while applying for work permit or local identity card to any Saudi ministry would ever conceal his or her Bangladesh origin. In this Islamic wonderland, the Saudis clearly distinguish between Saudi citizens and people from "Miskin" countries.

I am becoming sick and tired with this caricature of upholding the Muslim identity among good portion of people who are the descendants of a place of rich culture, the Bengal.

Sincerely yours,

Jamal

"While Islamophobia is in rise in the United States and all over the world, there is a positive story of a young Muslim woman Rumana Ahmed….."
Who is the genius behind the above statement? The writer finds this Lady's story as positive. In what sense, may I ask?
Actually, there is nothing wrong with the phrase - Muslim American, per se, just like the phrase - Jewish American, except it does not work for a society, severely plagued by terrorism. It works better when a society excels above other  societies, as Jewish community did.
In this case, such pride of oneness will isolate the Muslim society, and alienate other societies further and further apart, which will only increase Islamophobia.
I am sorry, I see no positive side of her pride or story. I could appreciate her achievement much more, had she recognize herself as a Bangladeshi-American.

No wonder, the backlash is so strong in America against such morons. Actually these are sick people - not physically, but mentally. And this sickness is contagious.

This lady is displaying her pride in her Ummah as well. By doing so, she proudly displaying her religious bigotry, and, thus, she has totally misused her access and opportunity.
President Obama must have chosen a highly competent adviser on woman issues in the Muslim world. What a role model she is!

Re: [mukto-mona] BARGAINING AWAY JUSTICE

To many Bangladeshis, the love for Islamic Ummah and Pakistan was rather a taboo subject but it was there and one could feel it. I heard shameless Bangladeshis announcing openly how valiantly Pakistanis fought during the war and lost. Did people really care to prosecute the Pakistanis for war crime? I doubt. Could poor Bangladesh stand up against the Sauds, Turks and Arab money in 70's?

I am not sure whether Mujib wanted to get involved with the war crime process when he did not know which way to go and manage the country? He was not exactly a Fidel Castro type. The man was surrounded by bunch of incompetent advisers and his own clan members from Gopalganj. Of course this gave an opening to criminal Zia and the rest became a sorry history for our poor Bangladesh. Zia fully rehabilitated these criminals in Bangladesh with no hesitation and reservation. The shame is truly ours!

BARGAINING AWAY JUSTICE: INDIA, PAKISTAN, AND THE INTERNATIONAL POLITICS OF IMPUNITY FOR THE BANGLADESH GENOCIDE

(doi:10.1162/ISEC_a_00258)

Gary J. Bass is Professor of Politics and International Affairs in the Politics Department and the Woodrow Wilson School at Princeton University.

This article expands the study of the politics of international criminal justice, restoring the crucial but overlooked case of Bangladesh, today the largest population confronting the aftermath of genocide. Bangladesh is one of the most important cases where the prosecution of war criminals was foiled, resulting in a disturbing impunity for one of the bloodiest incidents of the Cold War.

Using unexplored declassified Indian government documents from archives in Delhi, this article uses detailed process-tracing to reveal for the first time why India and Bangladesh abandoned their plans to put accused Pakistani war criminals on trial after the 1971 war between India and Pakistan. In the face of Pakistani defiance, the Indian and Bangladeshi governments reluctantly bargained away justice in order to pursue their national security, with peacemaking with Pakistan proving more important than war crimes trials. This episode furthers the general understanding of both the causes and results of impunity for mass atrocities, while extending the study of international justice into Asia. Bangladesh's tragic experience shows the primacy of international security, while also tentatively suggesting that even when amnesty is necessary for peacemaking, it can leave a toxic legacy for future politics.
