[ALOCHONA] CTG: Politicans offended by Mainul Hosein

Dear Alochoks

Politicians are a very sensitive lot nowadays. Before they couldn’t care less what ordinary people thought!

Why should Moinul Hosein should say that politicians long for law and order?

And even if they are it is ONLY because Moinul Hosein has convinced them in the first place!

Politicians should stop pretending they are little children treated badly by their headmaster.

They should shut up and get back to the real issue of political reform without Hasina and Khaleda.

Leaders of different political parties, include the Awami League and the BNP, on Tuesday denounced law adviser Mainul Hosein’s remarks questioning sincerity of the politicians regarding law and order.

They termed the adviser’s statement ill-intentioned which aimed at tarnishing the image of politicians and questioned his political past.

‘We have to consider how sincere the political parties are about maintaining law and order before we can relax the state of emergency,’ Mainul told the press on Monday when asked if the government was thinking about lifting the emergency.

He also said that the state of emergency was declared due to political reasons and before the emergency was relaxed, it should be taken into consideration if political situation had improved.

‘The politicians have not created any such problems after the imposition of the state emergency so that one needs to keep watch on their behaviour,’ Awami League presidium member Matia Chowdhury told New Age, adding that the problems cropping up during the regime of the interim government are the results of the government’s failure.

She accused the adviser of frequently making offensive remarks on politicians and said everybody knew about his political ideology.

‘He need not advise the politicians how to behave,’ Matia added.

The BNP secretary general, Khandaker Delwar Hossain, said the adviser was trying to put up a ‘smokescreen’ by questioning the politicians’ role whenever the issue of lifting ban on politics was raised. ‘He is making indecorous comments [on politicians] just to put up a smokescreen,’ Delwar said adding, ‘In fact, the people are closely monitoring what they [government] are doing for restoration of democracy.’

The Workers Party president, Rashed Khan Menon, said that there was no scope to link lifting of the emergency to the behaviour of politicians.

‘His [Mainul] remarks were not correct and it was an attempt to put blame on the politicians with ill-motive,’ he said.

Talking to New Age, the Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal president, Hasanul Haq Inu, said that only the people, not the law adviser, were to watch the behaviour of the politicians.

‘Such remarks from the government side were unexpected and unnecessary,’ Inu said, adding that it was unfortunate that the adviser considered the politicians as their rivals, although the politicians had been co-operating with the interim government since it took office.
