A metropolitan magistrate’s court in Dhaka on Wednesday issued a warrant for arrest of Sheikh Rehana, the expatriate sister of the detained former prime minister Sheikh Hasina, in connection with the Tk 2.99 crore extortion case filed against them in June.

Magistrate ABM Abdul Fattah also ordered attachment of property of Rehana, who lives in England, for her failure to appear in court in the case.

The court passed the order after accepting the charge sheet pending with the court since July 24 and posted for November 11 the next hearing in the case filed by the East-Coast Trading managing director, Azam J Chowdhury, with the Gulshan police on June 13.

The investigation officer, Obaidul Haque, also the Gulshan police officer-in-charge, filed the charge sheet with the chief metropolitan magistrate’s court on July 24 against Hasina, also the Awami League president, former minister Sheikh Fazlul Karim Selim, also her cousin, and Rehana.

Rehana was not named in the first information report of the case.

Twenty-seven people, including a magistrate, two policemen and a Southeast Bank manager, have been made prosecution witnesses in the first charge sheet.

The investigation officer during the submission of charge-sheet in court on July 24 appealed for the warrant for arrest of Rehana and the permission for attachment of her property.

A heated debate took place between the prosecution, and the counsels for the accused during hearing on Wednesday.

The defence counsel, Quamrul Islam, argued the court had no power to accept the charge sheet as a writ petition filed by Hasina challenging the case is still pending with the High Court.

The court, however, accepted the charge sheet, observing that there was no order for stay on the case proceedings.

The court earlier deferred the hearing in the acceptance of the charge sheet for three times after the High Court had stayed the proceedings of the case.

The High Court bench of Justice Shah Abu Nayeem Mominur Rahman and Justice Zubayer Rahman Chowdhury on July 30 directed the government not to proceed with the case under the Emergency Powers Rules and issued a rule on the government to explain the legality of bringing the case under the emergency rules.

The Appellate Division of the Supreme Court on August 27 stayed the execution of the High Court order and directed the parties to the case to take necessary initiatives for expeditious disposal of the writ petition.

The joint forces on July 16 arrested Hasina at her house on charge of extortion and a court sent her to jail the same day. She is now detained in a special jail on the Jatiya Sangsad complex.

News agency bdnews24.com from London quoted a UK Awami League leader saying that Rehana had expressed her surprise at and concern about the issuance of the warrant for arrest in the extortion case.

She told the Awami League leaders over telephone that her name was not in the first information report.

Rehana was quoted by the leader as saying that her name was included in the first information report to shut any possibility of her taking the reins of the Awami League. She said she would wage a legal battle, the leader said.

The UK Awami League, Juba League and other branches of the party condemned the warrant for arrest of Rehana.
